Lady Beavs/Spring Practice/Baseball

335

Ladies are at 6pm on ESPN (aka Ukrainian friends, for most of you degenerates). ;)

Football spring practice begins today. At least I hope it does — that date is from memory like a month ago. If it doesn’t, I’m sure angry@angry will let me know about it (for a decade straight).

Since these aren’t groundbreaking topics I lumped them together.

I’m not feeling great about this Baylor game, btw. I think the ladies win it with their big 3 playing A games, but the bit players really need to chip in a lot to make this happen. I know I picked them for the Final 4 months ago, but the more I look at Baylor (and that they’re essentially home), the more I dislike those odds.

Go Beavs.

  1. I have ties to both schools, but am definitely a Beaver fan first, so I’ll be one of the few sporting the black and orange in Dallas tonight. Oregon State needs to bring their best tonight, but they are definitely talented enough to beat Baylor, even in a hostile environment (and Baylor fans definitely come out to cheer for the women’s basketball team). Ultimately, I can’t fathom either of these teams getting past UConn and making it to the championship game. That said, a Final Four appearance would make for a fantastic season!

  2. Even if the Ladies lose tonight this has been an AMAZING turnaround. Coach Rueck, his staff, and the players should be congratulated on accomplishing a task that looked to be impossible 4 years ago.

  3. The game is winnable. Defense wins championships and the Beavs have one of the top defenses in the country. The Beavs don’t have to have their best games offensively, they’ll need to have their best games on defense. Of course, Baylor also has one of the best defenses in the country too.

Likely, they’ll need to start out hot and make Baylor fight to get back into the game. A down to the wire game doesn’t favor the Beavs.

  4. Since Baylor seems to always have some girls with a few extra chromosomes floating around,
is it fair to call tonight’s matchup:
Beav’s with Beav’s vs Chix with Dix?

  5. RE Spring Football: Last fall players showed the benefits of the new training programs. With another year under Andersen, they should be stronger yet. It looks like there will be a stable of pretty physical running backs, starting with Nall. Seeing how well Garretson balances out the offense will be interesting, as will McMarryion’s improvement (I think he would have put in the time this off-season with the roster changes). Defenders that can run arrive in the fall….

RE WBB: In their first two games, they had opponents with very dissimilar styles, physical make up. Tonight, they face a team that has some height and is much more similar to OSU. Weisner looks like she’s on a mission. I think if OSU’s stars can stay out of foul trouble, they’ll put up a very good fight and can win it.

    • Honestly from someone who doesn’t follow WBB at all: the only time I read about them/get info about the gals is on this website.

Angry and many other posters have been following and discussing WBB for years, starting with the the Wagner catastrophe and closely watching the way Rueck has turned the program around. Angry has continually discussed how great an addition Rueck has been to the University. So your comment is uninformed Linus.

      • The fact that angry doesn’t feel WBB playing in the NCAA regional final warrants its own thread, merely a part of a thread with Spring FB (which hasn’t even started) speaks volumes.

        • Volumes?

What is it with the hyperbole on this thread?

Maybe a sentence in a blog that has discussed a volume here or there… if that blog was truly bored and looking for any whim to whine about… maybe.

      • Cmon Angry admit it, you don’t really care about OSU WBB. I’m not saying that judgmentally, Not liking women’s sports doesn’t make someone a bad person. Just means they might be a little “old school” and not 100% on board with this whole Title IX thing.

        • News Flash: Most people don’t care about women’s sports as much as men’s sports. This and other shocking revelations at 11

Silly to talk about no one liking WBB here, though. It’s been a source of fun and pride all season

          • I didn’t say “no one”, you did.

You also said, “Why start now?” and said something about hypocrisy.

So it follows that you think this level of attention is new found.

It’s not, and it hasn’t been for a long time here. Women’s hoops has been one of the major concerns since rumors about Wagner first began (not two months later when the article came out). And at that time a lot of people saw the quality issues in a lot of our sports.

Besides, liking something not as much as something else is still liking something.

  6. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m pretty disinterested in spring ball. I’m thinking it’s going to be a struggle to get to 3 wins. We’re going to see just how good this coaching staff is. How much are they going to be able to get out of their players?

A lot of guys will need to play well beyond what anyone thinks of them right now for the season to considered a good year.

  7. What did I miss that has everyone so down on Anderson and the football program to project us lucky to get three wins this year?

I get that there is a lot of churn in the program and that last year was pretty ugly but I saw a few hot flashes of what could be, especially in the Oregon game. I wasn’t unhappy with recruiting, and a few of those people will show up in Spring ball.

I say if a QB emerges as serviceable and the defense finds a little fire we see 5-6 wins this year. If Moran or Garretson turn out better than expected, then who knows. I think that we are doing the football team a disservice if we write them off coming out of the gate. I think we should start as cautiously optimistic.

So get your beaver juice out and let’s hear some reports from Spring Ball

    • I agree. Its just waaaaay too early to know whether we could get lucky and snag a lower tier bowl or have a disastrous 1 win season or something like that. Way too early….

    • There are just too many question marks right now at key positions. There are lots of young guys with potential, but that’s all it is right now. Potential. Very few proven guys.

QB is a big question mark. Garretson will need to be more than serviceable to lift the Beavs out of the cellar.
RB – Can Nall provide an entire year of consistency? Who will back him up?
OLine – Can they protect Garretson?

Defense – Nearly every position is a question mark. As of right now, they are lacking in play makers. It’s basically a new starter at each position.

And there are overall questions for the team.
What kind of offense will be seen this year? Can they build on the offense from the civil war?
Can the defense improve? What kind of play calling will the new d coordinator bring?
They were proven to be a very soft team last year, can Andersen turn that around this year?

I expect tons and tons of the usual fluff pieces from the beat writers this spring about how the team has worked so hard in the off season and how they’ve changed their mindsets to a winning one.

  8. Last year there was irrational exhuberance because we stole a very good coach.
This year people will be down because last year demonstrated that our Beav’s had a serious talent issue. GA took his lumps and force fed his systems to players that had a hard time executing it.
The team will be better, but probably not that great again this year. The payoff should be in year three.
In the words of Aaron Rodgers………….”relax.”

  9. Baseball on the school stream, Fehmel gives up a HR to open the t2.
Atwood dh, Morrison sits out, Hamilton playing 2b and Madrigal moves over to SS. Gretler catching.

  10. Scott R has done a magnificent job in building a program. It has been fun to watch this team play the past three years. Go Beav’s!

  11. Can’t watch, what’s the consensus? They were up at the 5 minute mark….does that follow angry’s 5 minute rule? I don’t see many shots from the paint, but Baylor has made all of theirs from the paint….is Ruth doing anything to disrupt?

    • Ruth picked up 2 in the first half, Baylor getting easier shots. This is gonna come down to the end of the game, because we’re knocking down perimeter shots and stopping their runs, but they are finding the bucket and getting calls because of aggressiveness.

  12. Gabby stepping up! 8pts and handling the ball more than usual.
    Swish Sisters with 11 each.
Live by the three……….well y’all know.

  13. Who’s the Game of Thrones extra on the Baylor bench with the crazy eyebrows?

Control the TOs and OSU can win this…inside scoring should come in the second half.

  14. Lady Beavs up 9 at the half.

From what I can tell, the bit players chipped in and 2 of the big 3 doing well, but my power went out for most of the first half so not sure if that’s accurate.

  15. Baylor looks flustered. Don’t think they’ve struggled this much all year. Look for them to coming out charging in the second half.

    • Beavs have pretty much owned the 3rd qtr this year, keep it up and there is a good chance. 2 pf’s on Syd, Ruth, and, of course, Deven. Baylor also has 3 gals with 2 each.

  16. A very long and athletic Baylor team has caused way more turnovers than you’d like to see. Beavs have also had some favorable calls from the refs. Overall a sloppy half by the Beavs and still a 9 point lead.

    • Just like many conf. games, Beavs with TWICE as many TO’s as Baylor; 3pt shots make up for that, so far.
First 5 minutes of 3rd qtr should tell us a lot, but it is still gonna come down to the last few minutes, IMHO.

  17. I’m seriously bad luck for the ladies. I turned the game on with the beavs up 7 and Baylor goes for 6 straight in under a minute. Dont worry, i turned it back off.

  18. Beavs up 1, but Baylor clearly swarming, more intense, hungry, etc. They’re nuts. That insane realtor II must have reamed them. Rueck just standing around like a dope. haha

  19. It would be nice if the lady beavs were a little more insane. Need an insane realtor on this staff or one of the players at least.

  20. Weise passes up a wide open 3, Wiesner forces an airball. Bad decisions like that add up. Gotta shoot that when wide open…she must be nervous to pass that up.

  21. Weise with some really bad decisions. Passes up an open 3, drives and has a wide open look and turns it over instead of scoring.

      • I’m a little surprised this isn’t getting more conversation. I understand the business/leverage aspects, but I still find the timing odd just two years into the job. I could understand it better if WT was five years down the road at OSU and he felt like he couldn’t take the program any further (plus Tres would be gone), but this just leds me to believe that he views OSU as a springboard to a more “elite” type of job for him and that we have to take any “returning to glory” statements with a grain of salt.

  22. FINAL FOUR BABY!!! That game had me stressed, and I’m just so happy for our young women. I’ve been watching every game and this feeling is amazing for em.

  23. A gritty second half performance. Fought through a shooting slump and a swarming Baylor D to come away with it. Hansen should be the MVP, but it’ll go to Jamie. Huge step for Rueck and Beavs WBB.

    • They’d have to beat Uconn eventually no matter what.

Might as well do it now and hopefully get Washington.

Uconn looks scary good…all tall, all athletic. Looks like an obvious loss, but Uconn has the law of averages working against them and will lose eventually. Scary game for the Beavs for sure just have to hope Uconn lays an egg.

      • After South Carolina and Notre Dame lost to uconn the talking heads said Baylor was the only team that had a chance at beating uconn…..the beavs ended that. So in my mind the beavs are the only team in the nation that can beat uconn. It’s a long shot…..but the only comparison is Notre dame…..we lost by 1 with our second best player out. Beavs are in a special position right now.

      • Objectively it is better to lose to UConn in the championship than in the Final Four though. I realize many here will call that “loser talk,” but fuck them. ;)

    • As I said (hey angry@angry), Beavs are like a top 20ish team, but not top 5 or even 10. Bad pitching. If you’re starting Jake Thompson, you’re not that good.

If you want to be better, you start Heimlich, but Casey is slow to make changes/see the obvious, just like Riley.

      • I never said anything about how good this yeRs team is. The pitching obviously isn’t where it’s been in the years past. Not at this point anyway.

You’re right tho, this is Casey’s fault and we should push him out

      • By the way Angry, if you’ve played for or atleast met Casey, you’d know that his coaching style/on field personality is nothing like Riley’s. They are both excellent men off the field, but on field…. Nothing alike. In fact, Casey has said he really likes Anderson’s style and thinks it fits what OSU needs.

        • I like Casey, but he’s flawed (slow to change, doesn’t understand probabilities). Those are the facts. I wouldn’t be happy if he retired, quit, go fired, etc. I’d be happy if he realized his flaws and changed/improved. So let’s be clear on that.

          • I think you should atleast quantify how you would know anything in baseball compared to him and his staff by admitting what level of play you have experience in. I’d be surprised if it was anything past JV.

But you’re Angry, you won’t own up your experience, just internet Bully about baseball “probabilities”. But no experience yourself with just baseball.

          • I’d love to know what level you were very good at. If you’ve played at a relatively high level anywhere you’d respect the staff OSU has way more.

As for the photos… Uh no thanks. You’re proving my point about you with that.

          • I think you should atleast quantify how you would know anything in baseball compared to him and his staff by admitting what level of play you have experience in. I’d be surprised if it was anything past JV.

Do you get your trolls from a remedial book on the subject? This one is just so very weak.

Go finish the sixth grade… you never even played high school sports… something equally smarmy, tired and unimaginative about your mother’s basement… *yawn*.

A@A, your capacity to lower the bar is your bestest attribute.

          • Jack I’m pretty sure you’d win the biggest troll award hands down. Maybe Angry should put that to vote…

And honestly I really don’t care what level Angry claims to be really good at baseball at. I just think his criticism of the baseball staff is totally unfair, uneducated, and i think his opinions aren’t shared by many regarding baseball.

          • Clearly, anyone can fall down and be a better troll than you. It only takes a conversation with you to figure out your capabilities.

That’s not the point. The point is that your trolling is pretty remedial stuff as well as not being germane. I realize you’re an easy mark. But that’s not an excuse to be boring on top of it.

          • Jack, we’ve never had a conversation. And I’d argue that anyone who puts it on the Internet without personally backing it, that Coach Casey has weaknesses, and we should explore pushing him into Administration, is the biggest Troll of them all.

          • Too bad that’s not what I said.
You see words and rearrange them to make deranged arguments.

What I said is that Casey wants to retire every other year, and he might be good as an AD. On the field, he makes boneheaded decisions here and there. The end.

          • You’re such a liar Angry. You said last year we should put him into administration in order to hire Brosius. You said like yesterday he has weaknesses.

            What did rearrange??

          • Jack, we’ve never had a conversation. And I’d argue that anyone who puts it on the Internet without personally backing it, that Coach Casey has weaknesses, and we should explore pushing him into Administration, is the biggest Troll of them all.

This is much more entertaining. Why didn’t you start with this?

            We’re having a conversation now.

            Duh.

As for the rest, you’re going to have to source that so we can all go read it and see if it’s not just another of your “taking context out of or putting context into two words only three (maybe two) words apart and possibly referring to the same object” things that you do so well.

          • A source to what?? It’s all here, on his website. That’s my source, Angry himself, here on his website.

And yes, that’s very angry of you Angry… Correct the numbers on your readers and hits… But somehow forgot that just yesterday you say Casey has weaknesses, and “warts”. Whatever that is

          • What have I said that’s inaccurate?

You didn’t throw out the idea of Casey going to Administration?

You didn’t say he has “warts” and weaknesses…?

          • You need to source the posts in the threads from the past that are the hinges of your whole troll. “It’s all here,” is lazy and lends a rational reader to think that’s about as well informed as any of your arguments are going to get.

          • You didn’t throw out the idea of Casey going to Administration?

You didn’t say he has “warts” and weaknesses…?

            Ahhh… the old A@A standby:
If you say in the very thread above that someone said something they didn’t say, then move the goalposts to say that you said something they did say, and their saying you said something they didn’t say is an absurd idea because those old goalposts don’t really exist above… in this very thread… in your posts….

            Funny stuff!

          • Jack, I think he is referring to these posts:

            http://angrybeavs.com/baseball/9349
http://angrybeavs.com/athletics/11240 (in this one people suggest Casey as AD. Turns out it wasn’t me, but I did think he’d be okay at that job and do think I commented that somewhere). He also claimed I hated Bob D, which is pretty ridiculous because you (Jack) and I stood up for Bob D for the longest time. I did begin to hate him after the CR hire/Riley contract extension…and then his shitting on small donors. But overall I think objectively he was average, and had a good string at the end, as I pointed out in his retirement thread.

This just shows how seriously warped his mind is. He takes my kicking around an idea of wrapping up Brosius as an assistant/successor as a call to fire Casey. Angry@angry is insane and picks and chooses a few words and rearranges them and the entire sentiment of posts. I can’t tell if he has no reading comprehension skills or is smart and knowingly does this just to get a rise, but his BS is called out and this should be the end of it, though he loves to beat dead horses, so we know it won’t be.

Oh, and I do think Casey has warts, so no need to even dig those posts up since I said it and believe it. I state them all the time. Bunting with a runner on 1st and 1 out is a bad probability play. Batting Gabe Clark 4th vs pac pitching was bad, starting Jake Thompson, etc. Many others…(“Krhod” as closer, etc) that I documented over the years.

          • Edited/deleted to avoid tangent. It was beavbutter.

But feel free to test your reading comprehension against what is actually written in the post you keep referencing.

          • angry says:

            Edited/deleted

Yes, that’s usually what deleted means.

          • I know what he’s talking about. And he’s wrong. I just wanted to see how many pieces he needed to weave together to make his narrative work.

Of course Casey’s name was brought up when the AD position was open. He’s shown that he’s more than capable as a manager and fundraiser. And Brosius was an intriguing hypothetical replacement at just the right time. I’m sure we all think so poorly of Casey that we suggested he was qualified to take the lowly job of Athletic Director for our school.

            Shame on us!

  24. Well I was right. Good defense would win.

The next game they’ll need the game of their lives on both ends to win against uconn.

Angry, you can say uconn is due for a loss but they are The statistical anomaly. I mean they are the three time defending champion. They don’t know how to lose on the big stage. Pundits say uconn had an off game winning by 20.

  25. Well the women have certainly shown the country Pac-12 basketball! 3 teams in the Elite 8 and, now, 2 in the Final 4!

Still backing the Pac, I have to mention the other Pac women’s that made Final 4 tonight…in the NIT. Yep, those crazy quack women beat UTEP 71-67, without their all star.

How weird would an NCAA final of Beavs vs Bitches be?

  26. That wasn’t always pretty, but it was sweet.

Notice in the UConn highlights how efficient they are – quick, minimal passing, not putting the ball on the floor a lot…that’s what OSU needs to learn.

I don’t expect OSU to beat UConn, but there’s really no better way to get to the championship game than to beat them, right? It essentially is the championship game…

  27. With this run, the school will start recruiting itself. Recruits will know who Oregon State is and will want to go there. Good chance of keeping the in state recruits from now on. Also might produce some talent now that girls see basketball is a good option.

  28. Rank these nightmare scenarios from most to least horrifying:

    a) Beavs beat UConn and lose to Washington
    b) UConn beats beavs, Washington beats UConn
    c) GP2 has a son who ends up playing for the quacks
    d) Golly gum hand jive back in Corvallis

  29. Just saw the SportsCenter recap of the game. They made it look like OSU won because of that hand grab by Weisner on a loose ball the refs missed, and OSU getting all the calls. Give me a break!

    • That was a bad missed call. Though Weisner got absolutely hosed on one of her charging calls and another one was probably a 50-50 call. Weisner though did get bailed out a few times driving to the rim, but that is kind of on Baylor to not foul when someone is out of control. Didn’t think there were that many bad calls. Hamblin needs to keep her arms up down low, why do no college bigs ever realize this?

      • The Weisner hold is simply great play on her part. Subtle things that make a difference in a game. Like a veteran cornerback in the NFL that knows what they can get away with. She is an awesome player and a supreme competitor. The bad call was the fourth on Ruth. Baylor player threw an elbow to clear her out.

  30. on facing UConn……….

“To be the best, you gotta beat the best’ – Jamie Weisner

Honestly I am not confident they can but this team has a few traits that remind me of the baseball teams that won the CWS. Especially the 2006 team with the never say die attitude. No matter what happens in Indy it’s been a great season for the WBB program. Congrats Ladies! You’ve earned it

    • That seems crazy high. DX has him 44th overall. He might sneak into the end of the 1st round as a 24 year old defensive specialist might be attractive to one of the better teams in win now mode. He needs an NBA skill on offense though, don’t think he can break people down at the NBA level off the dribble and he can’t shoot the NBA 3.

      http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-mock-draft/2016/

      • He can shoot the trey just fine. And his mechanics are superb. Agree about his handle as of now. But he has the tools to make it much better when that’s his day job.

12 is too high… maybe. I think he can be a lottery-pick type player on the next level. But I think Euro draft and stashes push him back about five spots. Then those middle picks will be dominated by perceived upsides in underclassmen. And in the 20’s SA or GS move forward and pick him.

          • It translates very well with all the other shots he takes and makes with consistency. There are others on just about every roster in the NBA who do that and just that.

Good for them. Not one of them is Steph Curry either.

What he needs to do on the next level that he didn’t do here is to more creatively finish transitions. Most of his leads came later in the season once the frosh all understood why they had to hit their lanes. And then the one frosh who did know it got hurt. And he’s not always safe. He gets angry sometimes. He needs to reel that in on the O side at the very least.

  31. Hey, Angry, you still coming up early April?
Maybe we should start looking now for some of that IPA from Hood River which was mentioned here the other day.

  32. Horowitz with a story on day 1 of fb practice. Says there’s already a noticeable difference in the number of passes being completed with Garretson in at QB vs last year’s crop of QBs.

    • Hard to believe he bails on this sweet freshman foundation he has in place. I got to imagine he at least sticks around until his son graduates. I think he was just seeing what his market value was to get money from OSU. Coaching is a here today gone tomorrow job, you got to cash in when you can. That being said I wouldn’t be surprised if he bailed in 2-4 years.

      • People think he’d stick around because of Tres forgetting the fact that Tres could easily transfer to where ever Wayne went. He’s got a redshirt year to use. Both Alford sons followed their dad, so it happens. Schools will release sons so they can follow their parent.

But to me, it didn’t seem like anything too serious. I don’t blame Tinkle for looking into the opportunity and taking advantage of the situation. He acted no differently than most people in similar situations. When opportunities come, you’d be a fool to not even take a look. Loyalty isn’t what it once was. I see OSU doing what it can to keep him and he’ll stay every time. The critical time to keep him is in the next 4 years. In many companies I’ve worked for, I’ve found if a person makes it to 5 years at one company, they tend to stay for a long time. If he can return OSU to the top of the PAC12, I can see him staying for a while.

Rueck however is likely a lifer. He’s an alum who’s taken the program to new heights. If he gets by Uconn, they may give him a lifetime contract.

        • If we get by UCONN we still have one more game to play. The effort and emotion expended in such a win is not the kind that carries you through the next game.

  33. I don’t see the Ladies beating UConn, they commit way too many turnovers. Their size advantage against most teams will be equalized by the UConn’s size. It will probably be a very frustrating game to watch. But no shame in losing to a WNBA team.

    • UConn players looks long and fluid; OSU is going to have to be much smarter about ball movement and passing. They’ll need more efficiency, fewer passes, less dribbling. Shoot open shots confidently.

OSU is going to have to remind tough-minded, and not ever get down mentally.

OSU honestly has nothing to lose. Yet at the same time, they’re not the Riley-esque team that feeds on its own “we’re-the-underdog” rhetoric. They know they’re winners. Being National Champions will be difficult, but as rewarding as it may be unlikely.

        • Hmm – wonder if it ever gets boring. Nothing to fight for, nothing new to achieve. Just going through the motions. I watched a little bit of their game against Texas. They appeared to run the same 2 plays over and over, which I guess you can do with all 5* players. It looked like a mechanical toy. Seems to me it would be more fun to do what the Beavs have done but, actually, I have no idea.

      • I don’t have any worries about their mental state, they have shown repeatedly that will not be an issue for them. They will keep on plugging away the entire game.

They would need a huge team effort, big games by Wiesner, Wiese, and Hamblin. Which means staying out of foul trouble and being very efficient on the offensive end.

Team defense might be able to frustrate the Huskies and by staying close or controlling the tempo they could create some pressure on UConn (as you said no pressure on the Beavs). However, they just have the ability to wear down a team with the depth. If Beavs get in foul trouble it will be pretty much over.

Turnovers will result in many easy baskets for the athletic UConn team, much like it did for Baylor. However, UConn has much better range and they won’t be able to pack the middle, they will need to get out on shooters.

Baylor was smart to “pressure” the ball handlers, something UConn probably can do individually without a press.

A Beaver victory would require the perfect storm.

  34. Nice confluence of WBB achievement and spring football developing; I’m going to enjoy this week of Beaver sports.

Also, a plus that Tinkle signed for an extension. As Angry said earlier, the flirting with Stanford was probably just leveraging and part of the business.

      • Me too. Wonder why Stanford was all that interested. Tinkle is ascending in his career but hasn’t yet proved enough to be sought after by other D1, Power 5 conference teams, imo.

      • You’re a fool to ever turn down a job interview in your field no matter what your level of satisfaction at your current position is.

      • I agree with you, Gopher. This ain’t some “business management” job or some Monster self-help article telling you to interview to sharpen your skills. This is about Tinkle’s committment to restoring a tradition and the perception interviewing for another job creates. If I was a journalist, I would want to know more about Tinkles reasons and true long term goals? Did Tinkle think he was not going to get an extension. Did Monty sell him on Stanford? If I was the AD I would be pissed off also. Seems like a weird move to me. I wouldn’t brush it off so casually.

        • Yup. It is a job where you are a con man selling your commitment and vision to an emotionally invested customer at dear old fill in the blank. The con is to sell the alums that you love the place as much as they do so they support your program and fork over their hard earned cash. It is not a normal job. Tinkle just made a stupid move IMHO. Now all his motives are open to question going forward. OSU was going to reward him, but now it seems like blackmail.
It smells like what happened at Minnesota with Glen Mason. Quick turn around in a couple years and then made the mistake of saying “if the phone rings. I will pick it up.” Flirts with some jobs, pisses off the big money and when things go south he has no support. Everybody has the pitichforks out because they know he is a carpetbagger.

          • You’re only a conman if you are asking for the job. If someone comes to you, they are selling you a conjob by promising this or that. It works both ways and you are assuming Tinkle asked stanford for an interview. That doesn’t sound like it’s the case

  35. Eggers on the win:

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/9-news/299576-177131-beavers-dream-comes-true-final-four

Question: Why “have wrapped up the Naismith Award as national coach of the year with the victory over the Bears.” when UConn is undefeated and ranked #1? Bringing the OSU program this far is tremendous, but so is UConn’s string of wins; you’re talking sustained excellence and a perfect record (so far) there.

Several good quotes in the article, my faves:

Mulkey: the T was intentional…also she says ““You can’t let the fourth scorer on that team score,” Mulkey said. “You have your hands full with the other three, but when you let the fourth one score, you’re in for a long night.”

Also from Mulkey: “Do I think they can beat UConn? No. Didn’t think we probably could, either, but you wanted that opportunity to get there. But I think their defense and ability to shoot the 3-ball will allow them to compete a little bit — I do.”

And Rueck as a great representative:

“For Rueck, an Oregon State alum who was in school during the Gary Payton years, said those warnings from his friends about taking the job “were fuel to me.”

“I believe in the university, in the people and the community,” he told the media. “I’d experienced Oregon State as a winner, at least in the men’s program, so I had a vision when I took the job over.

“You don’t win without great players, and I don’t believe you win without great people. I think we have a great basketball team, but (the players) are better people.”

    • I think they’re okay with Moran RS but also serving as 3rd string/emergency QB. Moran can really run and should improve at passing during camps. I’d like to see them get two QBs next cycle.

      • just would hate to see Moran sit the whole season and then have to burn his redshirt for one of the last games of the year because the other two guys get hurt late in the season. Guess that could happen at any point during the year, but at least he’d get more than 1 or 2 games experience if they burn the redshirt early.

      • What if we are 3-6 and Garretson and McMaryion go down? It would be stupid to burn Moran’s redshirt then. Think we need a true third string QB.

  36. driving in this morning I heard on the radio a comment about spring practice and the football team. It was one of the guys on 620AM who said he happened to run into one of our DL players over the weekend. Said the unnamed D-line player told him that he loves playing for coach A and most of the players do, but there are still a handful of Riley recruited holdovers who are here, but don’t like Coach A’s approach to coaching. Said things will be different as soon as they can transition the remaining Riley guys out, but until then, some of these guys are a problem.

  37. Not surprised about Vanderveen, and not sure that necessarily makes him a “Riley guy” either.

Getting moved from QB to TE is a raw deal (opposite of a neat deal), and day 1 of spring practice probably solidified that he wasn’t going to start. He probably fell off the two deep and decided he was done. Don’t blame him…

    • I believe Casey said yesterday that Britton was sick and not even at the ball park. Surprised he is going today.
Back to WBB and the ceremony today, if I heard correctly, the only player Rueck mentioned by name re the Baylor win was our gal Gabby.

  38. Parker tries to put a positive spin on what I consider a baserunimg error by Nobach. Seems to me when Nobach saw that King was nearly to third he should have headed for the plate. A throw to try and get him would have made sure King was safe at third and, given the location of the catcher it is more than 50:50 that Nobach would have scored. Beavs would still have a runner on third and Morrison on second.
    Am I right?

At least Madrigal singled the two runners home, 3-3 now.

          • Looks like he was class of 2015 but had no major offers out of highschool, so went JUCO last year and played at Compton CC. Had an offer in Jan to Humbolt state and verbally committed, but looks like a Pac-12 PWO offer got him to change his mind and come to OSU.
Dont think its a 100% done deal yet. Still needs to get admitted to OSU first.

Highschool senior year numbers are pretty good and was offensive player of the year in his area, but still makes you wonder why the lack of offers then? Grades?

          • per the article I linked, yes part of it was grades. He says he currently has his academics in order

“Even with impressive senior numbers, however, a mixture of late-bloomer status and academic issues forced Prieto to go the junior college route.”

So does this mean he has 4 to play 3? Years of eligibility remaining is what I am axing

    • first thing I thought after watching his film is a lot of the time he steps into his throws late and winds up throwing off his back foot. Could be opposing defenses making him look good, could be having good receivers. Either way I wasn’t impressed by what I saw. Pac-12 athletes are a different manimal. Those mechanics are an interception waiting to happen

      • Agree his throwing motion looks problematic. I suspect he is being brought in to run scout teams, emulate opposing, mobile qbs, provide emergency relief.

        And put on weight. Geez…

        • Based on the timing of this qb offer, makes me wonder if on the first day of camp, BVV was maybe asked to convert back to QB, and he decided he’d rather not play football than go through another position change? Just seems odd they decide go get a qb the day we find out BVV has quit the team, and during spring camp.

Also, have to imagine there are slim pickens out there as far as eligible, uncommitted QBs, so I don’t expect much more than a serviceable body out there to throw the ball around in practice and scout situations.

  39. OT: Huge exodus of b-ball player from B1G schools. WT should check some out, if he is not too busy looking for his next job LOL. Spike A from the U of Harbough is available as a grad transfer. Kid is a great shooter.

  40. O-Live’s Moran with a brief article on Clune:

“Senior cornerback Treston Decoud said Clune reminds him of some of the “mean coaches” he grew up playing for in Louisiana.

“In the early days of spring ball, some players have noticed a difference – a gruffer coordinator at the helm….

I love that, get in my face,” said Decoud, who started nine games last season. “Make sure I do the right thing. Make sure I pay attention to everything.”

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2016/03/new_oregon_state_defensive_coo.html#incart_2box

      • I dunno if that’s necessarily true, Sitake was such an enthusiastic spaz on the sidelines its a very different approach. I liked reading that Clune doesn’t celebrate similarly, but starts preparing for the next play call….

  41. Sounds like Prieto is coming to OSU. Great addition. Can’t act as the 3rd string QB so that Moran can redshirt. Would be incredibly foolish to burn Moran’s redshirt half way through the season if the first two guys get hurt. IMO QB’s should either start as freshman or redshirt. Unless you don’t think they will be very good in which case why did you waste the scholarship?

  42. OT: Finally back from Peru. Saddened to see the Beavers lose to VCU, but oh well. Just gotta hope Eubanks learns to actually box out next year, and to use his size well.

Any updates on football spring practice yet?

    • GA resigned and went back to Utah State.
Riley was rehired along with Banker, Bruce, and Danny. Said he “never should have left.”
Other than that, pretty routine crap.

  43. People will say “angry, Casey has won championships blah blah what you do know.” Well, I won championships in national statistical baseball simulations, so suck it.

^^^^ Angry dropped this gem on 7/9/13.

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahah

        • I could give a rats ass. I think it’s adorable some jackoff comes in and whitekights a douchebag who has to dig so deep in the archives of this website, just so he can try and discredit the guy who runs said site. Go back and circle jerk with the rest of the shit stabbers on beaverblitz.

    • That comment is awesome. I won like 3 stat championships in a row, too.

It’s probably why I realize how dumb bunting with a runner on 1st is.

    • I agree, I don’t think she is coming to OSU. She has visited Oregon a couple times but OSU and Cal you never see/hear any info on her visiting. I hope I am wrong but I think she is headed to Eugene.

      • She went to two home games at Gill this year, so there’s that. But it’s a really hard read…..she may go to cal because it’s close to home…..her twin brother is going to hole…..OSU wins games. Three way tie for the lead. I’m not expecting her to come hear, if she does, cool. If not we’ll just have to kick her ass somewhere else.
