Women’s Basketball/Tourney Thread

176

Game time is 2:05 pacific on ESPN2.

Let’s use this thread for any subsequent games as well.

On a side note, I mentioned in an earlier thread a content provider wants to put OSU/Pac-12 content on this site. This would entail a 400px video in one of the corners. Give me your feedback on that. Right now I run the site at break even thanks to donations, so it’s an intriguing option. Yet, I, like most of you, like the simple design and don’t like obtrusiveness. At this point, I was considering running a test script during a slow period (after WBB ends maybe) to see how good/bad it is. If it provides useful content, it might be a good thing. If it’s obtrusive and autoscrolls, that would likely annoy me to the point I’d question any revenue it generates. Let me know your thoughts on it. Would you turn off adblock for this site alone to run it? If it provides good content would you actually find it useful? Hit me with feedback, Beavlettes.

  1. I have no problem with limited ads anywhere. Make a buck or two for your efforts. The live stream would be awesome.

    GWH

  2. Yeah dude, give it a shot. If we the people don’t like, you know this group of ass holes won’t be shy about instant feedback.

    • Cool, thanks.
I did ask if I can do a trial, and I can. I was thinking after hoops is over since it’s a slow period. I’m not sure what the content would be, but the 3rd party who wants to do it wrote “we can offer a video player for free that will give you access to content from all of the Pac 12 and more specifically Oregon State athletics”. I wrote this morning and asked for more details.

So, it sounds like it would be clips from the P-12. Probably not live, but maybe interviews and things already taped? I’m not sure. But that might have some value in that who really goes and looks at the OSU PAC page often? I don’t, so having it all right here could be useful if it’s not obtrusive.

      • I say go for the trial period, it’s definitely not going to hurt. If it puts a little green in your pocket all the better. I can’t see it being annoying. It’s your site and it’s the only good one for Beavs stuff. Imo you deserve a little paycheck for doing this site…

      • I don’t go to the OSU site very often unless I am looking for a live stream. Then I check Angrybeavs for a link. I do go to the Oregonian site a lot but their adds are very annoying and they have the page that displays and asks you to turn off your add blocker. In their case I won’t turn off the add blockersay too much junk. Cr

  3. last few games – Wiese double-teamed, full pressure – if that’s the formula, shouldn’t Rueck be coming up with alternate schemes? They are lucky to still be playing.

    • Thanks, I missed the lady beavs game entirely.
I see they won by only 1 point vs a 15 seed. Glad I picked them only to make the sweet 16. That’s questionable, some tough teams in the bracket.

  4. this is what I’m talking about regarding the baseball team. yes the defense will win you the title but the offense has to produce every once in a while to get to that championship game. Wiese with an off game, can’t have that anymore if they want to make a deep run.

Without wiese the team shot just under 50% from the field.

  5. Time for the Sunday game vs Creighton Blue Jays hasn’t been announced, I’ll try to move this thread back to the top of the stack after the Saturday baseball game and any Football discussion.
I notice the Blue Jays carry a full roster of 15, with only 4 listed at 6′ or more. Beavs, as recently dicussed, carry only 12 players, 9 of them are listed at 6′ or more. Shorter teams, if they are active and skilled, have been a thorn in our gals sides.

Hard to make significant changes at this point in the year, is Rueck being stubborn or realistic when he responds to questions about the problems his team had vs Beach’s box and 1 focus on Syd this way, “”We’ve been seeing it all year,” he said. “We got our 30th win today, so I think we’re handling it pretty well.” and “You guys aren’t giving Long Beach enough credit”?

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2017/03/goe_the_oregon_state_beavers_n_1.html#incart_river_index

    • I’ve only been watching closely the last five or six games, but they are awful offensively. Syd has a tendency to dribble to the side and get double teamed in tough spots where she can’t really initiate the offense and her teammates regularly pass up open 15 to 18 footers.

That being said, LBst is not going to shoot like that from 3 point land in most games, so three or four more misses and it would have been an 8-10 point win for the Beavs. Thank God they give a hard defensive effort every game. It looks to me like another USC game is just waiting to happen unless something or someone changes on offense.

    • “”We’ve had a hard time getting away from (opponents),” Rueck said. “But that’s been our M.O. It’s who we are. We find ways to win games.”

      http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2017/03/oregon_state_holds_off_long_be.html#incart_river_index

      Umm, yeah…

“The result ultimately left (Long Beach State coach) Wynn flashing a smile as she began her opening remarks in her postgame news conference, lauding her players who “left their DNA all over Gill Coliseum” in a down-to-the-wire contest that was the definition of March Madness. “

    • Seventh-seeded Creighton women rout No. 10 Toledo 76-49:

      http://stats.oregonlive.com/wcbk/recap.asp?g=201703170133&home=133&vis=594

Sounds like Creighton scored quickly and were able to rest players:

“The Bluejays jumped out to an 18-4 lead, with Janning scoring 15 of Creighton’s points. She had three 3-pointers in the first 5:49.

Creighton pushed the lead to 22-6 before the first period was over. In the second half the Bluejays led by as many as 24 points to lead 44-22 going into the break.

RESTING UP: Only Lamberty played more than 30 minutes for Creighton, and Flanery said he was definitely aware of the challenge that Oregon State would pose on Sunday when it came to managing his team. His assistants were aware of it too.”

They’ll face a better D against OSU, but OSU better start hitting their shots.

    • On offense, I’m afraid it is what it is this year. I don’t think anyone on this team is suddenly going to step up and do a Jamie Weisner impression. The wins, if they come, are going to be by defensive grinds. Rueck–at least on the pressers I’ve watched– never really criticizes his teams play, but usually gives credit for their poor play to something the other team has done well. Sometimes that’s the case, but sometimes they just play like crap offensively. I continue to be aghast at Division 1 basketball players-women or men–who can’t really shoot the ball. Shooting 40% from the floor and less than 70% at the line is not getting it done. Women’s percentages should be helped just by virtue of the ball being smaller. Look at the stats sometime how the starting 5 of UConn shoots the ball compared to what the Beavers do. Night and day. One reason, among several, that they roll over their opponents. They have skill shooting.

      • At this point, you are right, but I am surprised that a Top 10 caliber team has players that are hesitant (don’t want to quite say afraid) to shot the ball when they are open. If you can shoot a foul shot, you can learn to take a wide open 18-20 footer. Someone is going to have to shoot it next year!

        • I look at the ESPN website for game info, and they have an interesting graphic where you can see shot selection by each team by quarter or for the whole game, and you can also look at each player’s shots by quarter or game. From what I can tell its roughly accurate to reality. Its interesting to look where OSU is shooting and scoring from, and general lack of anything outside of the paint and inside of the 3 pt. line. There’s just no mid-range scoring.

          • That’s interesting that the ESPN graphs confirm what we have been saying. I’m no expert, but I didn’t think my eyes were deceiving me. There is also a Beav player who sometimes spots up in the corner, but seems to rarely take that open three either. I can’t remember who it is or it may be more than one player when they run their offense. There are open looks in the offense, they are just not from three ball land or point blank on every possession.

  6. They had a replay of Spring Game at midnight and DVR’d it. Firdt half was pretty good. Luton fit in a couple of tight accurate throws including for a TD. McM was pretty solid, Hodgins will be one of our better receivers from Year 1. He had a nice 40 yard catch. Nall Ball with effective QB play and more from WRs and the D is the key this year. This team will win atleast 6 and go bowling. I’d say probably 52% they get 6 wins, 41% they get 7 wins, 4% they get 8. That leaves a 3% chance IMO they win 5 or less and don’t make a bowl. This team is getting better and has higher talent and experience than any team of the last few years. Fall Football should be a lot of fun this year.

  7. Anyone have a guess how Isaac Hodgins will be rated? Don’t see a rating for him on any site. Didn’t watch the film yet. Just wondering if this is a big deal or if he’s an under the radar guy.

    • My guess would be a 3 star. He’s a little on the short side for the position but his film looks good. He dominates 1on1 blocks very stout.

        • I read an article that said anderesen was stoked he committed fwiw. Like i said he’s a little short but very disruptive on his film. I just don’t know why he wouldn’t be rated.

  8. The angry realtor almost pulls out the win of her career tonight, but falls short. They laid the ground work on how to South Carolina with their injured starter issues…….for whoever makes it that far.

  9. Lady Beavs played a solid game. Really nice reffing that game. Pleasure to watch when the refs are good.

Not sure they have the offense to beat FSU. Should be close/tough game. Gut says they lose by 7 or so.

  10. All sweet sixteen opponents will be from states on the Atlantic. Prob not much of advantage but all will have long travel times.

  11. McM should start – He has earned it
Andersen, not sure if he is “elite” is he ? Big Boy Coach ?
WBB will make it to final 8
Baseball is #1 …I think they will make Omaha
Gymnastics girls did very well. Couple girls Pac 12 Champs and one overall Gymnastics of year.
    Track girls ?

    • Gymnastics is the #8 overall seed and in the same regional as #5 UCLA and #15 Iowa. I don’t see any reason why they can’t advance to the finals in St. Louis as their qualifying scores were much higher than Iowa. Unless they faceplant, they will advance.

  12. An article on UConn’s Gabby. Williams:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/20/sports/ncaabasketball/uconn-march-madness-gabby-williams.html?hpw&rref=sports&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&module=well-region&region=bottom-well&WT.nav=bottom-well&_r=0

“In Saturday’s tournament opener, Williams delivered 20 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 steals and a blocked shot as UConn overwhelmed Albany, 116-55. Such resourceful performances validate what Jay Bilas, the ESPN announcer, said of Williams: She is the most complete college basketball player in the country, male or female.”

    Anyone see her play?

Also, saw UO women beat #2 seed Duke?

      • Stats are showing that Thompson isn’t getting lucky this year. His whip is under 1. Strikeout rate is up. Walk rate is down. He is pitching well.

Whether he can continue at this rate is valid since his history has shown nothing like this.

        • He’s always been pretty good vs bad competition. It’s the old Thompson head fake until it’s not. Beat some great Pac teams and then we can talk that he’s figured it out.

      • Aside from the question of Jake’s history or potential, the thing that struck me about him being named Pitcher of the Week was that he came out ahead of Fehmel and Heimlich. Not sure how that can be explained.
And, sorry to admit, the FriNite guy for the toilet seat club isn’t too bad either.

  13. Hey guys, so probably by the end of the week I will test the video player. I feel like it might actually enhance the site after talking with the guy about the content: “The content is a combination of a few products. We have official rights and full access to any type of content the Pac-12 network produces and there is also some in-house content that is created.” I like that it’s not irrelevant material, so I am going to give it a shot.

I have an instinct some will complain and threaten to stop reading the site once it’s up. 400px is pretty wide. I guess we’ll see. I’m going to try it barring any unforeseen issue and see what happens. Maybe by the end of the week or so.

I don’t think we’ll get live feeds of games or anything, unfortunately.

    • I’m looking forward to the trial run.
We’ve got another busy weekend coming up and I wonder if we need a new thread for SweetSixteen and another for the #1 baseball team in the land. For quite a while the dueling threads thing worked pretty well.

    • So can we watch a football game and comment all here? What kind of content will be streamed when a game is not being played? Will we have the ability to start and stop the content or will it just auto play? By the way I don’t care about any of this. It sounds neat.

      • When he says all content pac produces I think he means their interviews, post-game stuff, etc. I doubt it means live games, because then nobody would have to sign up for their network. My guess it will be like that fireside chat Parker had with Andersen. Stuff like that that nobody would really go to the Pac site to watch, yet still might be interesting to see. Maybe clips from PAC where OSU is mentioned in a baseball discussion, etc. Doubt any of it would be live. But if it’s relevant stuff like that I’d be fine with it.

    • That’s a good article. His brother was a quarterback for Wisconsin when Andersen was there. Interesting how they are able to work together. That should help him get the scheme down. Sounds like Houston is a smart dude as well. And, at 6′ 2″ you can certainly throw over him.

  14. Nice get by Tinkle. Much needed upgrade athletically at the 3 position. Next guestion: Can Tinkle Jr.
go a 3-4 months without fracturing a bone. I just read that he missed part of one of his HS seasons
with a fractured collarbone. Three bone fractures with delayed healing in four years. That is not normal for a young person.

  15. Looks like rain in forecast for Fri and Sunday.

Advantage to OSU in those games if held. Hope the Friday game goes because it’s a 7pm start so it’ll get cold and the bats will rattle a bit more. Big advantage to OSU.

I’m expecting to get 2 of 3 since the series is at home. Bullpen will need to be ready to go since they will get a lot more work this weekend. Kind of a good/bad thing to have. Starting pitchers that work deep into games but leaving the talented bullpen with few innings. Those Tuesday games will be rough on opponents with the depth of the staff.

Saw one of the reports say Rasmussen is throwing again but would be limited to bullpen work if he plays. I mean who does he take innings from? End of year series would be nice for him to get some longer work in since it’s 4 games.

  16. Nary a mention on this site about ol’ school benny on the practice helmets. Think they’ll find their way on to the field during the regular season? Not sure Andersen used the black helmets at all last year, maybe he’s working up to these as the black helmets.

Not a major development, but one called/hoped for previously on this site by many….

    • I like old school benny, but i dont really like him as a helmet logo, at least how they currently look on the practice helmets. It looks basically like a bumper sticker slapped on a helmet, which is fine for a practice helmet.

I think a potentially slick look could be something like what Lousiville did a couple years back. Black chrome helmets with an orange chromed benny logo. Just 2 colors (black and orange) with a metallic shine to it. No stripes

      http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1851848-louisville-introduces-black-chrome-helmets

Otherwise, i like our current orange lids and the white ones are boring but fine.

  17. After watching the spring game, I expect 7 wins and hope for 9-10 and an amazing 3-5 year run with GA’s guys all in and playing.
On the Joe Beaver show, GA said he views the d-line as the strength of the entire team and everything on defense unfolds from the line pressure. He expects 30 forced turnovers, and 30 sacks which would make a special year possible.
I love the fire and the specific but high expectations he puts on the team. He wasn’t.setting actual win totals but giving real benchmarks which will be met if the team plays consistent towards the toughness ‘identity’ and culture he has been forming since he arrived.

    QB thoughts:
Luton seemed to make quicker decisions and the ball jumped out of his hand. Looked great paired with Nall. He looks like the guy to go run heavy and play-action deep for big plays. I think he is the starter.
McM running the offense seemd to be at a slightly slower pace just within each play. I kept thinkiung he was a split second too late making the throws in comparison to Luton. Looked good on read option/keeper plays. McM may be the grind the clock qb.
Garretson looked way quicker than I remember and still has great moxie. I wonder if his accuracy improves by fall. On any zone read he is a very big threat to run and adds a great dimension. I think a healthy Garretson may be the red zone qb.

Tight ends will be a great addition. New wide receivers will push for playing time right away. I hope Villamin, Jarmon are productive leaders.

I trust the coaches on the state of the O-line. I think they know how to prepare a tough physical line, even if they must replace 2-3 starters.

Defense is a work in progress until Evans gets on campus. The pressure will be on the young linebackers and safeties to produce early and often.

Go Beavs!! Can’t wait for fall camp to begin.

    • I like your optimism but wonder about the way you see three QB’s being used, I assume all in one game.

Regarding specific expectations, GA was on with Canzano and mentioned the 30/30 sacks/TO thing; also he expects 50 guys to be able to squat 500 lbs at the start of Fall Camp. When asked how many could do that when he arrived he said he thought maybe 2 but really didn’t want to think back to those times!

The link includes a recording of the 13 minute interview, worth a listen:

      http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian/john_canzano/index.ssf/2017/03/oregon_states_gary_andersen_il.html#incart_river_index

      • As far as qb usage, I hesitated to be too anti-McM. But I think Luton is the starter and gets the lion’s share of minutes, DG is the back-up and McM is the fall back plan if injuries happen.

It was interesting to see first-hand how McM has a slight delay in reaction and getting the ball out. Not yet anticipating the throws or lack of velocity, I don’t know which, but it was evident.

    • Quick decision doesn’t always mean good decision.

The defense will be strength of the team. The running game the strength of the offense. Honestly I’d rather have a steady qb who makes the right read, who doesn’t turn the ball over and let’s the the players do their thing the a gun slinger that gets you an extra td, but more potential pick 6’s.

It’s strange to me how many people continue to talk about Lutons tremendous upside, when MCM had much better stats on fewer attempts and no turnovers.

Putting a lot of stock in a big arm, when often times it’s what’s between the ears that separates good from great.

No matter what we’re in a better position then the last 2 years across the board.

      • New girl in town syndrome. Everyone is enamored.
I keep forgetting to watch the scrimmage, so there’s that. But I’m not sure Luton throwing a back pick with his big arm is going to change my mind.

        • “New girl in town syndrome. Everyone is enamored.”

Only if she has big tits, or the rest of the girls are swamp donkeys.

        • I wouldn’t say I’m enamoured with Luton, so much as I’m intrigued. The fact that he has already shown, after only a few weeks of practice, that he belongs in the conversation for starter is more than i would have expected this early into his OSU career. He’s not ahead of McM at this point, but he could very well be there after an offseason and summer camp with his new teammates.
To me, based on one spring game only, he passes the initial eyeball test. I look forward to seeing these QBs push each other and like Dwill mentioned above, we’re in a much better position than the 2 previous years.

      • Best QB I ever saw throw in person was Jeff George. Beautiful deep ball that was amazing to behold. Yet the guy couldn’t lead a team to save his life.

        • You know your QB’s. Perfect spiral every time. I saw his kid get used as a tackling dummy this year when the Gophers played in Champaign. Does not have his dad’s arm, but apparently is a great kid that is well liked by his teammates. Opposite of daddy, who by all accounts is a world class dick.
Jim Everett also threw a beautiful ball.

    • I thought Jack had a good write up from the previous thread:

      “Jack says:

      March 20, 2017 at 9:27 am

      Rating: +3 (from 3 votes)

      From L to R:
      Brandel, Delp, Houston, Lavaka, Moore

On pass pro, Moore was broken down once, but he looked pretty good. Most of the breaks came in the A gap, so Houston has some work to do. But the team as a whole looked really good on run blocking.

Hodgins is better than advertised. He looks like an upperclassman ready for a breakout season.

I know it’s just spring ball, but a forward flip onto your tailbone at a 3/4 trot? Really? Your capacity to avoid injury is what?

Both QBs held the ball a count too long about half the time. MM has stopped his start-stop-reset routine, though. Now he just squeezes the ball until he sees his throw. And he looks lighter in the pocket and quicker on the run. He needs to spend the summer working with his K, learning how to slide.

Luton makes up for his timing with a strong arm. But he will be that much better when he just trusts his receivers, all of whom looked solid.

AP stood out as someone who can’t go less than full speed. I love the attitude, but there were a couple times when he played past the whistle and ran full bore at a defender who was stopping on the whistle. As I cringed at both impacts, he bounced off the defender and ended up on his can like he ran headlong into a brick wall. Both those incidents got chuckles.

It was pretty obvious the D was holding back. They’re going to be really good this year. And it looks like that’s because of their size and speed. They look more and more like a machine. I can see them playing downhill a lot this season.

And the O is the same on the size part. DA was broader than Luton is now. But Luton isn’t a small person. And he didn’t look like DA did with his O, towering above the huddle. Maybe that’s because of the visual effect of having skill players like Nall, Villy and Hodgins standing around him. But even the O-line looked bigger and more athletic than DA’s O-line.”

  18. Some may have seen a thread announcing the video add on about which angry has been writing. It seems to have disappeared for the moment, I’m assuming he is working on it.
There is lots to discuss this weekend and this thread, which was intended for WBB, has started to really spread out, I’m thinking a fresh pair of threads for Baseball and for WBB will be needed soon. Will watch for guidance from angry.

BTW: D1 has Madrigal rated today at the #1 shortstop in the nation (eventhough he has often been at 2b). Paywall prevented me from reading more.

EDIT: Video came up here right after posting the above, works OK – I have disabled ghostry and ABP ad blocker.

  19. Angry, I got the window in lower right at first. As others have noted, click on the X and it moves to full screen at the bottom. I liked the PAC 12 clips — Spring game and baseball.

    • That Oregon team has tons of upside potential, but now they’ve got UConn. They’ve done very well but there’s no way they win that game. Beavers still have a path to the Final Four. They better start making some shots though and Weise is going to have to get loose and put the team on her back.
