Can you guys disabled your ghostery/ad blocker for this page so we can test this out. I’m doing a two week test trial with this company to see how things go.

The video player covers some of the categories, but it doesn’t seem that bad, and it looks like you can x out of it as well. This is on the desktop. My lady said it doesn’t show on her mobile device — for those of you using mobile, do you see anything? Now she’s saying it serves the video at the bottom.

Feedback appreciated. I’m not sure if it can be moved to a different spot yet. I’ve been tinkering with it. It’s also serving me the same video over and over so far, a women’s gymnastics video. This could be because we’re just doing a trial for now. I’ll have to get feedback from them on how often that rotates.

  1. Works fine on desktop using Firefox and with ghostry and ad block disabled.
I notice it shows on the previous thread also.
When I x out the small video on the side it appears at the bottom of the page in a larger format.

I got several videos, including spring football game (highlights ?). Seemed to just be a matter of waiting for the Girl Scout cookie, tire ad, and gymnastics vids to finish.

    • I see that, yeah, if you x out it creates a larger player at the bottom. It says “more videos”, and you can watch some clips. Looks like Nall’s spring clips are there. That’s cool because I haven’t seen the spring game yet. Baseball clips, too. If it’s content like that then I’d be into it because I never go searching the Pac channel for stuff like that.

Sound is off by default, which is nice.

Update: It looks like if you let the video play, it scrolls through other clips. I let the women’s gymnastics play out and then Nall came on after.

  2. I had to log in in order to post this msg. While logging in got a msg saying something like “this is not a secure blah, blah, blah”. Never got that before. Anyway I’m seeing a video and haven’t disabled either Ghostry or AdBlock. The video screen is a bit annoying because it doesn’t get smaller if my window is scrunched down so it blocks some of the text. In other words if the size of my window is less that 3/4 the width of my monitor the video window covers what’s in this column.

EDIT: I just noticed that I was running FireFox at 133%.

    • While logging in got a msg saying something like this is not a secure blah, blah, blah. Never got that before

That’s a feature of the new firefox and has nothing to do with this player. It’s any site that doesn’t have an https in front of it now. Go to any other non-https site, log out, log back in, and you’ll see it.

  3. Angry – I haven’t been checking in much lately so I’m not up to speed on what’s going on. So, that said: – – –

is it useful/beneficial for you if we turn off ghostry and adblock or were you asking us to disable them for testing purposes?

    • Yeah, the only way it would generate ad revenue is if people turn off ghostery/adblock and let the videos serve. That’s why I asked people to turn it off. This is a two week test run so we can all see if it has a useful purpose, and I can see if the $ makes sense vs the obtrusiveness. If it sucks I will remove it, but try to give it a fair shot and see. So far, I don’t mind it. The only complaint I have is that it is serving the same video over and over. Once that video ends, it does serve a new one, but it would be cool if they first video rotated. At least it’s women dancing around in tight outfits.

  4. Tested on iPhone…….video is at the bottom and has a “play” button. When the button is pushed the vid starts in FULL SCREEN and with sound ON. Minimize full screen and I can see all the ab content with the vid at the bottom, sound stayed on.

    • Didnt try scrolling down originally, but now that I do, i see the video box but it doesnt play any content.
Then, if i hit pause/play, it starts playing a Hyundai ad, and later plays a Tire Pros ad, but I never actually see any Pac12 content. Even though the video are shown as options to choose. Is anybody else seeing advertising rather than Pac12 content?
      (Android web browser, no adblocker)

  5. OT: Your “once in a while” fortune cookie update, courtesy of the salesman down south:

Willie says, “If someone does not smile at you, be generous and offer your own smile. Nobody needs more a smile than the one that cannot smile to others.”

  6. viewing on my desktop. concur that default sound off is a positive. The default screen is about a half inch to an inch too wide, which is to say I’d prefer a “clear view” of the text thread without having to close or minimize the video box to keep scrolling down to see AB posts. when you first log on the video box obscures the tweet screen which is a minor negative. Maybe it can be positioned on top of the archive tabs. I can foresee myself “double tasking” by scrolling through messages with an eye on the screen if a video excerpt seems interesting and for which I can turn the sound on. In practice that happened with the highlights from the Arizona series. It seems as if there is an ad between each video segment and that seems a bit much.

  7. I’ve seen enough Tire Pros ads to last the rest of the year…

Other than that this is an awesome new enhancement to the site.

    • When the ad is initiated, that’s what generates a payment. It would be nice if the ads varied. Maybe they will after the trial period. I agreed to try it for two weeks as a test.

  8. I’ll submit this entire thread, once all feedback is in, to the content provider and see if they can do anything. I see equal positives and negatives. Positives are I am seeing content I would have never looked up on my own. Negative is the same things play over and over, so if you’re commenting a lot (e.g. a football thread) it would be overwhelming to see that each time. I’m not sure a way around it. Maybe people can enable adblock most of the day and disable it at other times, but likely they’d forget to disable it, and it would be back to square one where I have to ask for donations each year.

Another idea might be a patreon account, with the “buy me a cup of coffee if you like this post” model. A button like that at the end of each post might be a better way to generate some revenue so I don’t have to ask for donations each year, and people can contribute as much as they want when they want.

For now let’s test out this video player and see how it goes and if the developer can work with us.

  9. Trying out the new video add in my desktop browser. I can see myself in the future quickly hitting the “X” button, in order to anchor the screen down at the bottom of the page. does that mean you won’t get credit for a view of the ad?
Main problem is, if I’m on my work computer, I don’t want to have a moving video showing on my screen while I work. It can give the appearance that I’m watching TV while at work. Leaving the text portion of the AB site up at all times is pretty discrete, but the video draws attention from those around me. Not a big deal though. Just didn’t want to be shorting you on ad revenue by hitting the X every time. Hopefully that’s not the case.

Agree that it would be nice if they randomized the playlist and the advertisements so you didn’t get the same content every single time you opened your browser.

  10. What I’d like to see is if the ads develop to be more relevant over the 2 week trial. I’m not sure why they think we need tires or need to open a credit union account in Arizona.

I’d also like to see the player update content every day, if not more. Like I saw the gymnastics team and that was cool and all, but how about something else? Or at least mixing up all the clips they have. If you click the “more” button at the bottom they have a lot of clips. Why not revolve them?

  11. That’s it! I’m going to go get tires! Seriously though, I’m on mobile (always)& it’s fine besides the irrelevant commercials. Can we get Victoria secret commercials instead? Or hunting stuff? Happy it’s not an auto play video player. The bottom of the screen is a good place for me, if you can’t get it to fit over on the right side beneath the Twitter feed. Hoping content updates frequently, it would save me a lot of time. Get everything in one place.

    • It would be unbearable if the Quacks won it all. I really don’t want to root for Kansas, but I have no other option. Altman’s career should have been over with his “play dumb” act with transferring a rapist and the sooner I no longer have to see Brooks and his antics the better. Hard to believe GP-2 and the gang made them look like idiots just a season ago.

  12. So running Chrome at work, here’s what I get…

The video anchored at the bottom right, autoplays video, sound is off by default. Sound off good, autoplay is fine, anchored to corner is good.

Bad for me is the fact that between the position of my monitor and being half blind, I have the screen cranked to 125% or 150%…that causes the video to obscure the thread. Good news is if I x out the video it gets bigger then seems to anchor to bottom of thread, bellow everything else. Is that by design or ?The positioning works for me. I’ll be curious to see after I post this if it stays there or what happens.

  13. OK so after posting it reloaded at the bottom right but appropriately sized for the size of the text on screen and not blocking the thread. Again closing the window pushed it to the bottom of the thread.

  14. It’s not in the way or annoying on android chrome. I actually like it, if I’m bored I can watch some vids and make you some money. How much do they pay per ad?

    • I’m really not sure. It’s part of the reason I want to do a trial only at this point. They said $100 per 20,000 impressions. The site gets between 2k to 9k hits per day. I’m not sure how many would generate “impressions”, but an impression is when the ad starts. So, I guess we’ll see?

I’m not into ads at all. The only reason I’m considering it is the content is relevant, so maybe a win win. I wouldn’t place any old ad on here.

      • Well then I just made you 4 cents………..your welcome. Don’t go spending it all in one place. The nicest thing about it is that it’s not pop ups or any of those intrusive type ads while your trying to read content.

  15. Lots of Tire Pros, gymnastics, and Ryan Nall. I don’t have an issue with the ads. The video player’s situated in the bottom right corner, not obstructing anything on my end.

  16. Don’t care what you say because I’m going away today and going to make Wayne Tinkle pay for that great big hole in my heart.

    • *HOT TAKE ALERT*

Kent and Romar combined: 31 years coaching PAC-12. 3 conference titles
Sean Miller: 8 years coaching PAC-12. 4 conference titles

I sure hope UA is as dumb as you and they run him out of town cuz that’d be extremely good for the Beavs

      • 4 conference titles? Awesome. Just winning conference championships doesn’t cut it in Tucson.

IDK what game you watched last night but you don’t blow an 8 pt lead in the last 3:45 of regulation, not to mention UA had ZERO timeouts at the end of the game to set up a final play. Across the board Arizona had loads more talent than Xavier. Miller has yet to get them to a final four and THAT is what matters down there. Arizona had way more size and could have or should have punished Xavier inside all evening but for whatever reason did not. He’s a great recruiter, terrible X’s and O’s coach. Thus my comparison to Romar and Kent but you’re too dense to figure that out.

That said, do some reading. Many down there are tiring of Miller’s excuses. I don’t give a rip what they do. Keep him or can him as it has zero effect on OSU.

Your “hot take” is pure shit.

  17. Works great on my iPhone 5s. The video is at the bottom.

I think it’s a great addition to the site.

Looking forward to viewing on my 20″ screen with Firefox. I hope it works on the side below the twitfeed.

  18. Speaking of Nall, my 7yo son is obsessed with the Beavers and espically Nall. Nall was sitting in my section at the Blazer game tonight. My son who is super shy bolted up the aisle and started yelling he was his biggest fan. Nall jumped down 2 rows, shook his hand, hugged him and took a picture. Made my sons night. Nall was great.

kicking myself I didn’t think to ask who he thought would win the qb battle.

  19. Did anybody else catch that “Benny the Beaver” is getting some love in LG appliance commercials that are running during tournament games? Interesting choice of mascot usage considering the Beavs were about as far away from making the tournament as a team could be, but any exposure is a good thing.

Update- I haven’t seen any ads, I’m just getting that gymnastics thing over and over.

    • I believe once the gymnastics things ends, there’s an ad, then a new video begins. Or x out of the gymnastics thing and the player will move to the bottom. then you can click “more videos” to see other clips. There should be a baseball and spring game clip, etc.

      • Thanks Angry. That works for seeing other videos, but no ads are running. I’ve turned off Ghostery and Ad Block. I’m sorry if this is not helping you with clicks. i wonder if it has something to do with my Chromebook?

        • If you turn off ghostery (for this site only) and adblock (for this site only), it should serve ads. Let me know if that continues to happen, because I can ask the developer why. Maybe watch a few videos in a row and see if an ad is served.

  20. Back-to-back Hyundai ads did it for me, then UW gymnastics.
The Hyundai ads are worse than Tire Pros.

Can a button be added so that the user can skip through the videos so that he doesn’t have to watch them all again and again and…?

    • If you don’t want to watch videos why don’t you simply click the x on the video at the side which will send it to the bottom and entirely out of sight? With the sound off by default, it is pretty unobtrusive as is.
All that is for desktop, if you are on a phone you can accomplish the same thing by hitting the “play” button, minimizing the viewer, and turning phone sound off.

      • Maybe I didn’t state it correctly. I do want to watch videos, but having to re-watch them from the start when you make a post and/or come to the site each time is ridiculous (IMO)…I was asking if a button could be added so the user could get back to point he was at when he made a post.

  21. A few thing i took away from the spring game were the size of the players especially the dl who i think might all be poly and the tight ends. Quinn smith had a nice grab. Also thought trent moore didn’t look great at rt and sumner had a few low snaps. That’s my biggest concern. At qb i prettt much agree with what’s been said. Luton has a big arm but threw some picks mcmaryion did pretty well but had some close picks as well. Also that dropped td was a little behind Hawkins looked like it might have bounced off his back hip but should have been caught. At this point in time i would want mcm to start he’s proven and i don’t want a new qb being broken in on the road in a new stadium opener. We’ll see if he continues to grow in the fall and see how it looks in fall. Also we all saw that garretson couldn’t connect on the deep ball to save his life however last spring he was dropping them in perfect to villy. I remember thinking that would be a big threat. It makes u wonder if he was how bad he was really banged up. I still don’t think u want him as ur starter but hopefully can provide some nice back-up. I think the d will be around the top of the conference this year. Crawford and hungalu are beasts.

  22. Just saw Luton throw a nice TD splitting the defenders. Missed the first TD.
Not sure if I can watch this entire game, but he threw a nice ball there. We’ll be fine at QB this year, even Garrettson is fine.

    • No, but I am going to submit this thread to them after the trial period. Just try to bear with it for 2 weeks and take notes here.

  23. Wow, McM killed Luton in this scrimmage. I’m really surprised to see highly observant/well respected readers of this blog think that Luton won this battle. I’ll eat my hat if Luton starts game 1. Well, before making that wager, I should probably wait to see if he improves by Fall, but man, McM killed him. McM with so many better decisions. His TD throw to end the game was amazing.

    • I should probably look at that end of game throw again. Only saw it once, but it looked like everyone had given up on the play and I wasn’t sure it would have been completed in an actual game. D-back looked lazy.

  24. I’m liking this pac12 player a lot. The baseball win the highlight video popped up, something I most likely wouldn’t have gone searching for. It’s nice to keep up with things so easily. Also I made you another penny.

  25. Also posted on the baseball thread… I fired the site up this morning and the first video was of the Beavs win over AZ last night right out of the blocks. Nice.
