Women’s Basketball: Oregon State vs Florida State

FSU is not a terrible draw. Should be a good game where the Beavs keep FSU around 60 points. Can they score more than that? That’s always the question. Pivec is the wildcard for me. She’s been slowly stepping up and seems to have nerves of steal. If someone is going to contribute unexpected double digit points, which will be needed to win this game, I think it will be her.

I picked them to be eliminated here, in the sweet 16, but this is a winnable game — with lockdown D, the usual suspects giving their yearly averages in points, and just one player stepping up and giving more (e.g. Pivec).

Go Lady Beavs

  1. No doubt, Pivec could provide the edge needed. But, Kolbie and Marie have shown streaks as well, and Katie or Kat could go off at any time. I don’t see Kalmer being a factor, I think I’ll say Kolbie makes the difference today on both ends of the floor..

    • She’s pretty much disappeared her sophomore season, instead of making the solid jump from the freshman year. She’ll probably just end up being a role player off the bench.

  2. FSU making tough shots. Keep forcing them into those kinds of shots. If they make them, credit to FSU.

I’ll bet rueck throws in a zone here and there to slow things down.

  3. Just their low-powered offense is biting them in the butt. This team just doesn’t shoot the ball very well, which is probably costing them 6-10 ppg over the last several games. Beavers haven’t been very good in the 4th quarter either overall–not terribly surprised by how the game was going, but was hoping they’d keep that early run up. This sort of like the Stanford game where they ran out at the start, then quit scoring.

    • Offensive problems and turnovers. It’s why I predicted elimination here. Great D gets you here but not beyond. That said, they still have a shot somehow. Someone better get hot soon.

      • 23 TO’s & shot 36% from the field, a lot of that Weise’s misses. You just won’t win many games playing like that–no matter how good your D is. Rueck needs to figure out his playing style as it relates to turnovers. Its been a chronic issue with his teams over the past three-fours years that I’ve been paying attention to WBB & its cost them in some pretty big games.

But, the gals did have a pretty good run this season considering what they lost from last years team. Luckily they did well enough to make the tourney and host the first two games. They won way more games than I expected them too. I thought the pre-season projection for them to finish fifth was about right. BIG question now is: what about next year? They are losing Wiese, Hanson, Orum, and probably Brown and its not like they have anyone, aside from Pivec, that’s emerging on the scene. Gulich doubled her PT, but only added another 4 ppg. McWilliams was a no show, which is never good for a second year player. In some ways this graduating class is bigger step back than the loss of last year’s seniors to this year’s team. Hopefully, the next freshman class brings something to the table.

  4. They have battled back to a tie, you can’t blame the defense. If they lose it’s definitely because of low offensive output

  5. Who is going to score for them next year? That’s the bigger problem. I hope some of these high level recruits start panning out. Pivec is the only one who looks like a player to me.

    • Laid a turd. Rueck can not adjust. Brown and Gulich missed about 14 easy points and Syd plays worst game of her career.

      • Rueck’s inability to create a game plan for when Syd was having an off game is troubling, we saw it more than once this season.

  6. 23 TO’s !!
Even Kolbie’s best game of the year couldn’t counter that.
So, they were picked 5th in conf this year, will they be tabbed for 7 or 8 next season?

  7. Good season for the ladies. This a painful way to go out but can’t win them all. I expect next year to be something of a transition year. There’s a lot of scoring help on the way in Corosdale, dependent on how quickly she can adjust to the higher level of play. Tudor has the ability to be the next sharpshooter from the outside, and McWilliams has the talent to be a good all around Pac-12 starter, something just hasn’t clicked with her.

Losing Gabby is my biggest worry for this team. There’s no ready made defensive specialist ready to step in, and despite the “experts” thinking Hamblin was the defensive leader for the previous two years it has always been Gabby.

This will be an interesting roster to start next season.

    PG Pivec, Kalmer, Goodman
    SG McWilliams/Tudor
    F Washington/Corosdale
    F Brown, Thropay/Green
    C Gulich, Grymek/Green

Bree Brown decision to grad transfer will be pretty huge. Either way I expect we’re going to see a ton of 3 guard play next year, but if she leaves we might not see anything else.

    • SG McWilliams/Tudor

This seems like the biggest weak spot. Some big recruiting misses there. Neither looks like a player at this point. They better have great off seasons and adjust. Tudor looks to have some potential at least. But McWilliams can’t play D, awkward shot, and very lanky/slow.

      • Tudor and McWilliams have both been mostly just spot up 3 pt. shooters. Don’t know why McWilliams went into such a dramatic swoon this season. She showed pretty good potential last year when she stepped in and started for Wiese when Wiese went down with the broken hand. Her shot is way, way off and has been all year–really flat on most of her jump shots. Maybe she can fix it over the off-season. As a general rule, at least my observation of watching many years of college basketball, good players almost always make their marks as freshmen. They may not be the star of the team or anything like that, but they have a definite presence and usually command significant minutes of PT. It seems when they come in as freshmen and mostly sit on the bench or only get in the game when its garbage time says something about the talent level otherwise they’d see the floor. Especially in the case like this year’s squad that lost three starters and one of the first subs off the bench. Pivec is the only one right now that seems likely to step up next season & wouldn’t be surprised to see her numbers double.

  8. You can “out defense” decent teams, but not the elite ones all the time. You have to protect the ball and make shots. The Beavs did neither today. I was kind of amazed at their run in league play, so I don’t consider it a disappointing season by any stretch. Just pissed the Ducks are going further. As long as UConn is UConn it’s all farting around for 2nd place anyway.

  9. I just can’t believe what was unfolding before my very own two eye’s earlier tonight during the second quarter of the game because it had seemed as though that the Beavers were going to blow out Florida State after the first quarter had ended but lo and behold out of nowhere everything seemed to quickly fall apart for the Beavers beginning in the second quarter and continuing onwards throughout the third and fourth quarters until eventually they’d been bumped off and knocked out of the tournament by a Florida State team that they honestly should’ve beaten by double digits. However, I’m still very excited and somewhat confident in their chances for even greater accomplishments and further successes come next season because if B. Brown decides to come back for another year and J. Grymek turns out to be as great as everybody keeps saying she will definitely be once she’s been through all the summer camp and pre-season basketball practice games and becomes well acquainted with the college transition process then I’m quite confident that the Beavers can ultimately surpass this season’s successful accomplishments. I think that tnext season’s starting five lineup will feature M. Pivec, PG…K. McWilliams, SG….J. Grymek, C…B. Brown, SF…and M. Gulich, PF…Now that will be quite an extremely tall, talented, and threatening starting line-up especially if B. Brown decides to return to give it one more go.

  10. McWilliams will probably be the PG. She was the fill in for Syd last year. I think Rueck likes the fact that she is really tall for that position. She took a huge step back this year relative to her first year.
Hopefully Brown come back. Great year with a lousy ending. Perhaps he gets a grad transfer?

    • Seems like Brown is not wanting to come back if I’m reading between the lines correctly with what is out there, but hopefully I am wrong.

    • Stanford on to the Final Four. I guess the normal order of things in Pac-12 WBB gets restored. Yes, it was a disappointing end to the season. Wiese’s shooting just went off into the deep abyss and not much help from other players. I’d guess that tournament performance is going to eat at her for a while.
