  1. To answer the last question in previous spread, my account has OSU +15.5, with an over/under of 135.5.
$100 to win on the Beavs would pay back $1145.

    • Thanks.
And this from Lundeberg: Per OSU, there will be no postponement announcement prior to tonight’s scheduled 7:05 p.m. first pitch. TV rules all, and the game is on Pac-12 Networks.

      • TV rules all, but really, how many people bother watching Pac12 baseball on a friday night? The audience can’t be THAT big, can it?

    • Agree, but even 8 threes might do the job if Lady Bears Fr PG who has only recently been starting gets rattled. The emotion shown be her coach may have that effect, as opposed to Rueck’s more calm and reassuring manner.

I like the Beavs chances if they cut down on Lady Bears excellent record for second chance points.

      • Emotion shown by her coach v. your perceived more calm Scotty?

After watching the game, I didn’t see much difference between the two coaches’ demeanors. Not sure what you’re talking about here, let alone the whole rattling thing being anything about it. She’s a frosh being inserted in a major role late in the season.

She did well, then she reverted to the mean. That really doesn’t have anything to do with any rattled by non-existent emotion psychobabble.

  2. Slightly off topic. The spending bill signed into law today carries some indirect implications for college baseball. Law allows MLB clubs to pay below min wage levels. I think NCAA coaches can use this as leverage in recruiting. High school players drafted outside of the top 10 rounds will now think twice about passing on the scholarship. More quality players will now play college ball.

  3. If I were Baylor i’d throw bench players st Gulich early, try and get her in foul trouble.

If Gulich isn’t In foul trouble, she continues late season/post season great play, the threes fall, OSU wins…

  4. Does Baylor’s coach share a crypt with KellyAnne Conway?!?

Like seeing OSU’s smalls rebounding, Baylor’s Reticence to shoot 3’s.

  5. I dont have tv for the wbb game. Radio makes it sound like Beavs have been pretty even with Baylor(mostly leading by 2-6 pts so far in 1st half) but several of our gals have 2 fouls already. What’s the Baylor foul situation like?

  6. Rueck is a genius. Anti Riley getting a TO called when he realized Guilich got into trouble and should not be dribbling.

Should be coach of the year.

  7. Ladies end Baylor’s 30 game winning streak. First Tennessee, now Baylor. OSU WBB, the streakbreakers! Way to go, gals! :D
    #fearthebeaver

  8. Man, why is the women’s team more fundamentally sound than the men’s team? The women play as a team, wait for the open shot and pass the perimeter. They don’t pull up at the arc and shoot the 3 the first chance they get. It’s fundamental basketball and I feel it’s honestly a better product.

    • If you like the product better, then enjoy it. But don’t compare it to men’s hoops unless you want to talk about what level of HS ball we would place the best NCAA wbb teams. It’s much slower, and the people are much smaller, covering so much less court.

It’s also a smaller ball. If you’re going to compare them, you can at least start by making them use an official ball.

Yes, they do play on their level better as a team. That’s why they are comparatively a great team in their respective sport.

Just accept it for what it is and congratulate the team. The men have enough issues without silly non-comparisons from the peanut gallery.

Passing the perimeter and fundamentals, indeed.

    • And how about the rebounding? Baylor had been +19, today: either even or -1 to our gals (depending on source).
So many players stepped up, Corosdale is quickly becoming a favorite, along with Kat, and ….well, everyone else!
Postgame Rueck praised his staff and made mention of contributions in practice of Destiny and Thoropay.

  9. An ancillary benefit of these past few victories is the positive effect on Kennedy Brown, a top 20 6’5 post out of TX. She recently named her top 7 which included UT and Baylor. I’m sure she’s watching Gulich and what she’s become.

  10. Eventhough Angry has fallen for Kat, he’ll still want to see the vid on the linked espn page which is from the twitter of reporter Allison Williams.
Shows Marie leading a cheer in German, Beav gals join in but Marie won’t tell them the translation! Gotta love all these gals.

It has been said that girls need to be happy to win and boys need to win to be happy. One of Rueck’s secrets is knowing how to keep the group happy. IMHO

    http://www.espn.com/womens-college-basketball/team/_/id/204/oregon-state-beavers

        • How can it be true? It doesn’t even make sense.

Every coach has a “have fun out there” canned line in hoops. Play loose, have fun… whatever. It’s true of ayone, not just girls.

And get this… girls like to win more than they like to lose. Groundbreaking stuff here, I know.

But I’ve never heard coachspeak go all snips and snails and puppy dog tails before. It’s quaint because there’s a cutesy play on words. It’s weird because it should be tied to a large rock and thrown into the ocean… about 50 miles out.

          • Heh heh… I should let you discuss the incontinence of your cutesy bunk quote with my sister at a shooting range. She’s a prosecutor. She won’t be happy if she doesn’t shoot better than you.

She would be happy against most anyone reading these words.

  11. DVR’d the game. Rueck is a great coach and Gulich is simply phenomenal.
Pivec’s TO late in the game was a five point swing and turned a potential easy win to an ass pucker ending. They executed, stayed composed, and pulled out a win. Katie M was cold blooded.
WHY can’t our men’s team play like this?

    • WHY? Because there is no “I” in team; you don’t see Beav gals (or WBB on general) going one and done.

And, just as in teaching firearms marksmanship, guys generally think they already have the answers, while gals are willing to take instruction.
      Sexist?………Nope, experience.

      • She has great hands and great footwork. Really good fundamental post play.
We saw the ASU game in person where she went off for 36. It was an awesome show.

        • Saw her at Gill vs UCLA, hands so much better than Ruth. Plus she has improved mid range shot, and she RUNS the floor. Even has ability to play with 4 fouls!

        • I guess it took me awhile to see it, but Gulich is very athletic. She was slicing between Baylor’s lumbering giants to get rebounds. On the flip side, Baylor was not as athletic as I had imagined. I don’t think they would have dominated in the P-12 this season. Probably a 6 or 7 loss team like the Beavs were.

  12. From a Baylor board a few days ago:

“Anyone else concerned that Oregon St will bring a significant amount of fans to Lexington and make this a virtual home game? They travel pretty well.”

    Tonight:

“Gulich dominated the Big 12 defensive player of the year. She developed into a great player over her career at OSU.”
“I wonder what place we would finish each year in the Pac 12, ACC or SEC. Our fans expectations are usually overblown because we play in a soft conference, dominate it and spend the season way overranked in the Top 2 or 3. “

  13. So using Jacks logic the lady Beavs would have won by 30 with more lezbos and atheists on the floor. I would love to get more of the Jack the bigot’s expert annalysis on woman’s basketball.

    • Not my logic, putz.

Why lie like that? Is your God a weak god? Is your faith so weak that you need to make up straw men? If you ever get past tldr ,you can get over your contrived butthurtedness over that you didn’t even bother to read.

Your faith must be weak because your god is a weak one. Your fallacies are putzy at best. Pray harder to your putzy god with your putzy faith.

    • I’m going to guess you’re one of those putzes who starts the day reposting some inspirational fluff quote, incorrectly attributes it to Einstein, then spends the rest of the day fear-mongering and working yourself into a lather that is completely antithetical to your putzy quote.

    • And do you really want my analysis on wbb? I sometimes use big words and multiple paragraphs. I know you’re averse to both. So I’m not understanding your use of the word love.

Perhaps you use that word because deep down you really don’t know love. You have relationships you ostensibly call loving. But you don’t really feel love in the way all the picture books explain it. You’re going to have to fill in the real reason this is your reality. It could be mommy issues, daddy issues… your little sister beat you up on regular basis. Who knows without your telling us?

What is known is that you have poor faith in whatever you think you have faith, and you don’t what love is.

Do you ever find yourself tearing up during Whitesnake songs?

      I’ll bet you do.

Then I’m guessing you play Haddaway into the night, thinking you’re both cool and tasteful.

So let’s get back to your lack of understanding… well… words and meanings. I believe your lack of empathy is derived from the mommy issues choice from above. You check all those boxes pretty clearly. Weak, subservant woman bending to your father’s beatings and your pissant lack of respect for her. In your eyes, she deserves to be spat upon… unless she’s carrying your food or near the TV so she can change the channel for you.

It would suck to blow a tube on the TV just because you missed with a loogie. Amiright?

You publicly blame your mother for your sisters’ porn careers. But I think deep down you know it’s your father’s fault. That’s why you both pray to a weak god and have weak faith for that weak god. It’s really daddy issues when you think about how weak you were when you chose to spit on your mother. You love your sisters, especially their portfolios. But you feel conflicted about so disrespecting your mother because you just don’t understand what it means to have a loving relationship, let alone the definitions of many of the words in this sentence.

When you think about it, your brother was the lucky one. It may have taken three stints in rehab and an extended stay at the gray bar hotel. But managed to escape your weak-assed excuse for a family, and you know you don’t ever have to hear from him again to know that just escaping means he’s better off.

What I dislike is that you spawned. Your children can only grow up associatinging your hatred of their mother as a nightly appearance by the cops, if she isn’t lucky enough to have yet escaped. She probably did escape, knowing your intellect. But she had to do something like fake her death in order to do it. Because you may be dumb as a spiteful little frijole, but you’re persistent at being dumb. Unless she was dead, you would stil be trying to find her, trying to make her life the living hell it was when she was with you… again.

Yeah… I don’t think you meant to use the word love. Maybe you meant enjoy instead. Given your lousy family, your definition of love isn’t credible.

    • Since you brought all this up… yet again… we should probably discuss Benghazi and Birtherism as well. I mean, why just go half-stupid on a post where we should be celebrating? We’re here to discuss your topics… all day… every way.

Let’s get into spooks taking over at State and the dark days ahead when an admitted coward and chickenhawk (and pussy-grabber) like Bolton takes over at NSA.

Let’s talk about the odds that anyone who has young males in the household will likely lose one or more of those sons to one of Old Bone Spur’s fake wars brought about by more of the chickenshit lies Bolton the chickenhawk makes up so he can blow up millions of innocent people.

Lordy knows I lost enough due to Bolton’s WMD lies… that Bolton knew were lies.

      Fucking chickenshit chickenhawks!

At least Bolton was less a coward than Old Bone Spur. He hid from the draft by joining the reserves. I’d respect him if he advocated for peace from that position… and didn’t grab pussy.

Nothing a little NDA can’t fix.

      Right?

        • Not true. Tres, Stephen Jr., and Ethan are all 4-stars. Drew a 3. More than enough talent on the team to finish higher than 10th in a horrible MBB Pac-12.

    • I would drop football first.

      Correction: I have dropped football.

I don’t think I’ll go so far as to drop the sports pack after baseball ends. But I might do it if I remember to do it. I won’t need to pick it up again until November.

  14. I’ve always appreciated Angry’s policy of almost never banning anyone, no matter their agenda or attempts to make this site like the comments section of the big O. Letting the community here simply ignore such posts seems to me a good approach.
Even if the “ignore” button sometimes disappears, a reader can just skip foolish posts.
    Way to go, Angry!

    • If you ban/censor/etc, you can’t claim that you aren’t responsible for anything posted on your site.

      Any moderation is considered moderation.

    • I had to laugh at the guy who replied to you that your tweet was a “disrespectful comment”. Look, Tinkle is well paid and delivered mediocre results this year and then made disingenuous excuses centered around the team’s lack of experience. He deserves to have the heat turned up. People also forget about his “disrespectful” flirtation with Stanford after his one good year.

I hope the whole team stays together or I’m sure he will use “Eubanks left for the draft” as an excuse next year. I’ve never heard or read anything resembling an excuse from Rueck. Tinkle has three top 100 recruits in the starting lineup, a bad break here or there could have the team end up in the NIT instead of The Dance, but it should not lead to 7-11 in league play.

  15. Read in a post (pun sort of intended) somewhere that Eric Ely should get lots of credit for developing the “bigs.” He’ll have his work cut out for him when this season ends.

    • Actually, the Beavs have two very talented “bigs” coming in next year 6’7″ Acquino and another 6’8″ post player. Acquino rated #7 in the country at her position and from what I’ve read here offensive skill set has unlimited potential and she can dunk it too. If you’re referring to Grymek, yeah, that’s a huge work in progress but she’s already improved from where she was to start the season. Off season will be a big plus for her but she needs to develop some upper body and soft hands.

      • Aquino is 6’9 and Patricia Morris is 6’7. It’s a legit 6’9 too as she met Britney Griner last year and was a tad taller than her.

    • The bigs coming in are like hamblin type players. Gulich was a classic international player. A big would could shoot jumpers. You don’t see many bigs in women’s hope shooting fade away jumpers.

        • As I understand, a grad transfer would almost always have only a single year to play. Not Rueck’s style to bring someone in for just one season; doesn’t fit with his “keep the group happy and on the same page…TOGETHER”.
I could have missed someone, would be interested to hear if he has ever done such a thing.

      • I don’t recall where/when/how Rueck first saw MG and recruited her but given Mulkey’s reference to international playing – I assume he is keeping an eye out for other international players.

      • Aquino is coming next year is 6’9″. Morris is the other and is 6’7″. Aquino has outside a shot developed similar to Gulich when she arrived. Aquino’s outside game is better developed than her inside game right now. Aquino is ranked as high as 7th is this class for prospects, but her inside game needs development to be more useful in college.

      • There’s no video of aquino that I’ve found but from what little info is out there she’s apparently a polished player that has unlimited offensive potential. She’s certainly much more advanced and polished than Grymek. That said, she will still have a big adjustment from HS Ball to Power 5 college ball.

        • I also found that there was minimal improvement in The Philippines under her leadership, but of course she looks like Abraham Lincoln compared to Duarte.

        • You should be able to find videos of her highschool, Ribet, on YouTube. They didn’t play her as much as you would think. They also did not utilize her very well. Aquino was also not eligible for a time at the beginning of the season. The final dynamic that affected performance and season was transferring from New Jersey and the turmoil surrounding this.

  16. Comments on Gulich:

“Granted, it helps when you have the best player on the court. And at least on this night, there wasn’t any question as to that person’s identity. Brown might be an All-American, Cox might be the same in waiting and a marvelous physical talent, but neither was Marie Gulich’s equal Friday.

Someone with a vested interest in that not being the case nonetheless readily confirmed it.

“She has to be older than a senior because she played like she was older,” Mulkey said. “I mean, she was dominant. We had nobody that could guard her. She just reminded me of my days back in international basketball, where she just dominated the floor — shooting, rebounding, finding open players. She was by far the best player on the floor tonight, and she controlled the whole thing for her team.”

  17. Anyone know where the Beavs stand on the recruiting of the Top 5 high school girls in the State of Oregon and Washington this year?

    • recruiting in women’s sports is always very hard to follow. Obviously less reporters hounding prospects and not many girls posting how they are blessed with scholarship offers.

I imagine Rueck will always be in the finalists for any prospects in the pnw. With UW and WSU in terrible shape, the odds go up considerably. and UO only has one oregonian on the roster and will have none next year.

The hard thing to do is when the top players want to get away from home. It’s apparent now, that Westbrook had no intentions of staying in state for a long time and that worked against Rueck but worked for him with Pivec and Corosdale. I’d say right now, he’s got a better shot at the WA kids than the OR kids.

      • As usual, good thoughts, Bill.
I’d imagine Rueck will be in the finalists for a very large portion of prospects all over the country as long as he produces the results we’ve seen over recent years.

Curious about the effect of playing time. Does Rueck use his bench significantly less than other coaches, I haven’t researched.

Better shot at WA kids than OR? Well, Casey does pretty well recruiting in WA, so there is that too.
Hmmm, Meggs in town this weekend, and livestreamed on the school site for TWO today.

  18. The #1 or 2 rated PG in the same class as Brink and a top 5 player overall, plays at the basketball factory, Hopkins HS, a couple miles down the street from my office. Rueck has been here to recruit her. In fact he was here the same day as the U Conn coach last fall. Ducks are also recruiting her. She is really skilled and has been getting national acclaim since she started playing on he HS varsity as an 8th grader. I believe the two played together on a national team. Package deal to OSU?
She would be awesome in Reucks system. Smooth and makes everything look effortless.

  19. Preston Jones solo HR off the top of the wall in center. Nice he was able to pull that off a full count too. 1sr of his career. 7-0 Beavs

  20. Luke at 79 pitches after 6, 10 K’s vs 22 BF.
Per Parker, he added 10-15 lbs of muscle during off season.
Looks his best for this season today.

    • “Yeah. Because that’s a fair or sensical comparison. Get out of here with that mess and be a true beaver fan.”

And there it is! A Stanford graduate who never went to Oregon State making herself the gatekeeper for who is a “true beaver fan”!

While I get sticking up for your dad, come on.

        • Completely fair comparison.

Rueck overachieves. Tinkle underachieves. No one’s saying Tinkle needs to reach the Final Four or Elite Eight. Tinkle taking his team of mostly 4-star starters to something higher than a 10th place Pac-12 finish is a reasonable expectation, especially with how terrible the conference was this year.

Oh, and remember that Wyoming team they lost to at home? The one that was spun as being SO GOOD to excuse the pathetic loss? They finished 6th in the Mountain West. Yippee.

          • I get it.

We Beavs just don’t know how to be good winners. It’s not a normal condition for us.

It’s completely unfair to make a celebration about wbb all about mbb’s failures.

It’s also a ludicrous comparison, borne of infantile fallacies.

          • And I think I called Wyoming to be 6th after that game, maybe scraping together enough good wins to challenge for fourth. I can’t remember who I was responding to, but they were the one who said that Wyo would possibly win the MWC. It was a silly idea, and I told him that the coach I wanted four years ago would win the MWC.

          • And how in the world does Scotty overachieve?

Are you saying our players are all diamond in the rough types who weren’t highly recruited out of HS? That would be highly incorrect. He was given a blank slate, no expectations and a brand new practice facility that he didn’t have to work for. A new coach can only dream of ending up in that sweet a situation.

          • Are you guys serious?!

Do some research. Rueck won 3 Pac-12 championships in a row despite NOT having the best recruiting classes in the conference. Elite 8 this year, despite not having the 8th best recruiting in the country. Baylor consistently recruits more talent than OSU, yet Rueck is 2-0 against Mulkey. That is overachieving. The talent on the teams have been great, but not as great as the results have been.

If that is just “meeting expectations”, talk about spoiled! Unbelievable.

          • You disrespect Syd. She was a program changer. I don’t care what she was rated by the bunk sites.

You also disrespect Weisner, Hamblin, Hunter and Siegner. From day one, they worked and improved with each other. Part of that was the bank slate that would attract a lot of good players with playing time. Much of it is that Scotty is very personable and confident. Sprinkle in a little luck, and we’re where we are.

Don’t get all verklempt before you try to evaluate someone or something. It looks silly.

He is now meeting expectations set by your arbitrary ranking sites who exist to make you pay to see their arbitrary rankings. He’s about as good a post-season coach as he is an in-season coach. But the Tourney is a beautiful thing for the very reason that any given day can turn it upside down. Can you imagine how boring it would be if it was only 12 teams, and the top three seeds from each region were the only participants… like it is in football?

At least we’re now talking about wbb. So thank you for that.

          • You’re absolutely right that Sydney Wiese was a special player, and the Beaver teams have worked crazy-hard to achieve success. While that deserves respect and praise, you are discounting the competition. Stanford has fantastic players and has out-recruited OSU regularly. UCLA has fantastic players. Baylor has elite talent. I’m sure all of these players (or the vast majority of them) work very hard, too.

You make it sound as if Rueck has been getting the best raw talent in the country, ho-hum if they do well, and everyone else has been slacking off. The way I see it, the fact that Rueck and the women have worked, grown, and strategized to be able to beat these other teams is an accomplishment they should all be proud of, and that we should appreciate.

          • It’s a good thing we didn’t have to face all of Baylor’s elite players and had all ours… and that we didn’t lay Stanford or UCLA (yet) in the Tourney.

            Oh wait… it’s still a tourney.

Apparently the only achievement is what is accomplished in a tourney, not what is expected. Therefore, there can be no over-achievement… because it’s a tourney.

            ?

Again, why not shut down these hoops tourneys and just invite the top 3%, like football does? Then we wouldn’t have to deal with all these “over-achievers” who beat teams with lower ranks.

            Puh-lease!

A tourney is here to provide a real champion, not one borne of these weird expectations derived by arbitrary biases. A part of those expectations are set by the results of the regular season and conference tourney. The regular season is the only achievement you can really measure for a team. It captures the grind, the highs and lows and and the mean ability of a team. A tourney can be pure adrenaline, luck, circumstance, something unknown or a combination of all them.

Over-achieving, according to your logic, would have had us beating all those teams in the regular season. Winning the conference would have been that over-achievement you’re looking for. Tourney wins are a bonus. But unless they win it all, they’re just participants like everyone they beat… because… wait for it… it’s a tourney.

  21. Tourney draw lining up nicely for the quacks. 11 seed Central Michigan to get to the Elite 8 before they face the weakest #1 seed: an injury-depleted Notre Dame. I don’t even want to think about them winning it all *gag*

    • Adley 3 for 4 with an RBI; coulda done all that as DH and be fresher tomorrow.
Gotta admit though, he is head and shoulder above the rest at managing pitchers…………so, not really wart worthy.

  22. Today’s point spread minute is brought to you by…

Louisville is favored by 12 and a half points with a total over and under of 129. A $100 bet on the Beavers would return 745. Thank you and don’t forget to root for the beavs

    • Thanks for info.
Points should be more like 8.5, IMHO, but a smaller payoff than the Baylor win? How much of this stuff is EastCoatBias and how much is the business side of betting odds as managed by the professional money handlers?
I don’t like the road game feel here, but that is what has to be dealt with now, the time to fix that was back in the PAC12 Tourney.
      GO BEAVS!

    • I think we’re going to get killed. Basically a home game for Louisville, and word is theyr’e thugs. Our ladies are too nice, lacking the killer instinct to play thugs. Refs tend to favor thug/aggressive teams, too. 12 seems light. I think we lose by 15 to 20. Hope I’m wrong, and in Scott I do trust, so if anyone can pull this out it’s him.

      • Thugs?

I don’t see any thugs so far. I see us throwing the ball out of bounds and trying to pass into triple teams. But I don’t see any thugs.

That was not a valid 3-second call, btw. She picked her foot up at the FT line, resetting the clock everywhere except in the ref’s head.

    • There is no over-achievement in a tourney. There’s winning it all, which one team does. And there’s not winning it all, which is what all but one team does in a tourney. If you want to call a championship an over-achievement, you’re bonkers. It’s simply an achievement. Not winning the championship is what everyone else does.

        • Can one do that?

Back on topic, the details aren’t expendable just because you feel like ignoring them. When the words that are used are incorrect (or worse, simply created out of whole cloth), the message is simply wrong.

      • Bullshit. Umbc overachieved. Loyola was not expected to be in the final four. They overachieved. Beavs were rebuilding, and exceeded expectations.
Merriam Webster defines overachieving as over or above the standard or expected level, especially at a younger age.

        • One game does not make an overachievement.

Tournaments are literally one game at a time.

UMBC played to their potential while UVA did not. Loyola is playing to their potential.

None of them have done anything they can’t do, therefore, none of them have overachieved. They have simply achieved.

If we go with the definition you have chosen, then anyone above the mean is an overachiever. If your expected level is what you want to point to, then remind me not to rely on you to make out any kind of budget. Unlike overachieving, overspending is a real thing.

If you want to use the word, you should know that it’s more of a pejorative than it is praise. It’s usually used by lazy people to dismiss someone who has focus in certain endeavors.

  23. Louisville looks so much faster, fresher, and aggressive. Better ball control, getting steals, blocking Gulich several times already. Game seem over to me. We look worn out and outmatched.

      • Yeah I don’t see how Louisville can keep this energy level up, but I’m not sure what their bench looks like. Their plan seems to be to contend everything with high energy and wear our players out. Full court press on every possession so far. Seems to be working. We’re missing easy rebounds and getting mauled for turnovers. Signs of fatigue.

      • It seemsl like they generally seem to keep calm, work through it, and do better in the second half. But yeah, you have to value every possession…

  24. I thought Rueck should have called a timeout to let his team rest and regroup after seeing Louisville’s energy level (off the charts). Unless he thinks they’re also wearing themselves out? Luckily Louisville is missing some fairly easy shots or this would be a 15 point deficit already.

    • Should be 3 with plus one for McWilliams. That first post entry was a terrible idea, but she at least got to dribble it once. The second just never really got to her long enough for her to have possession.

  25. Cold shooting, 6 TOs after one quarter. Rebounding adavantage of 12 – 7 though…the guards keep rebounding and shots start to fall, could be competitive.

All the travel recently and the time difference may be a factor…OSU typically seems like a second half team though.

  26. Louisville’s just a better team. Not bad for a “rebuilding year”, though, and the ladies are going to fight to the end (unlike Riley teams!).

    • They’re not 10 points better. They’re playing with consistent effort versus our sporadic effort mixed with tossing the ball where nobody plays. Our perimeter D is doing us no favors. We’re giving up open shots there and in the mid-range like it’s candy.

        • They were late or really shallow on D, overcompensating, and allowing themselves to be broken down. And Gulich has been non-existent on D, so they get no help.

  27. Well it could have been a lot worse. Now that they’ve seen it hopefully they can make some plans at halftime and get much needed rest. We looked so much more worn out than they did. Rueck with some genius TOs at the end of the half to get the backup C in and give the team rest. Anti Riley.

    • Genius?

There were fouls to give, not TO’s to take. Genius would have found a way to square Gulich’s head for a spell instead of forcing her to play to through whatever bugaboo she has up there.

The reason we make fun of Riley in those situations is because he doesn’t have the wherewithal to try to be competitive at every moment, like he’s paid to do. He doesn’t even try to do what’s normal or just plain good coaching. Rueck does perform well, as a good coach would. But it’s not genius, or even an indication of genius. It’s just him doing his job.

  28. halftime interview, OSU rep talks about Rueck’s “expectation of excellence,” and how Rueck referenced Casey as the other example…

        • Thinking of your “is smith more like Petersen or Riley” post makes me think he ought to be getting some interaction with Casey and Rueck…not Riley. Sure, different sports, but there are still lessons to be learned there.

          • You are who you hang around, and out of sight (Petersen) out of mind. Riley is in sight and in mind. Smith made a grave error, but from what I’m told the Uni and Boosters forced that hire. We simply won’t get out of our own way as a fanbase. And we’ll pay that price.

        • America would vote for anyone, including a fraud, a money-launderer for human traffickers, a chiseler, a horrible loser of a businessman several times over, a spoiled trust fund brat born with a silver spoon up his ass, a Wall Street crony with a bunch of Wall Street cronies as friends, a bullying coward and a serial liar.

So forgive me if your take on Rueck seems skewed. Anyone with even a lick of sense would vote for him at this point.

          • Let it die with a POTUS who was known to be all this and more before he decided to become King Birther?

I’d feel better if I left this earth with Rueck replacing that scum-sucking pretend-man who buys porn stars’ affections because he can’t stand his supermodel wife.

          • Sure.

I have contingencies for stupid. I’m set for beyond seven years of Dumbass Donnie and his army of dumb.

And if I die in some war created by his extreme stupidity, I won’t be around to care.

Good luck sending your kids to die for his blustery dick-measuring wars run by spooks and pussy grabbers.

            That’s all you got left.

          • And you’ve proven zero ignorance… not even a dash of it.

So please go on and back up what you say, unless you’re spineless like Old Bone Spur was when he was a coke fiend in the clubs of NYC while others went and died for his freedom.

  29. 0 pts from McWilliams, and 2 pts from Pivec in the first half. They have to step up and put their shoulders to the wheel, to have a chance in the second half. A Jamie Weisner in the backcourt would make this a dangerous team. Hopefully, they’ve taken Louisville’s shot to the chin and they can rally in the second half. Go Beavs.

  30. This is about to get ugly. We’re playing just as badly (well, Louisville is just playing great), but now they’re making shots. 20 point blowout in the offing. Still see good effort, etc, we’re just not as good a team.

      • Looks more like game speed. They aren’t expecting the Louisville player to be as fast as they are. Also, when the PG brings the ball up the court for the Beavs they’re always looking at Rueck with a defender right on them; one of those will/should get stolen. Not sure why Louisville isn’t going for them.

        • Nope.

          Just no focus.

You could also argue that our sluggish game is a lack of focus. But you can’t argue that Louisville playing their normal speed and us doing nothing about it is a valid reason for doing nothing about it.

        • “when the PG brings the ball up the court for the Beavs they’re always looking at Rueck with a defender right on them”
That’s been the wart forever, still can’t argue with overall results.

  31. The offense has just died nearly every time it goes though McWilliams the whole game. Basically a turnover or a poor shot late in the shot clock every time

    • McWilliams and Gulich seem to have been the focus today, and they just didn’t show up to play.

Tudor, on the other hand, is all in. She was all in for Baylor as well. Come to think of it, she’s played a great tourney. She had to work for it against Tenn, but she got it done.

McWilliams’ value is in her swing play and post entry. When Gulich has a horrible game like this, so does she.

        • She doesn’t move enough for my taste in style, hanging out in a perimeter position too much. But she does work at a consistent role level for now. She has good upside. We just need to see the make-up of next year’s team and how she gets shuffled around in the line-up.

I can see her becoming a player like Hunter was, only with an outside shot.

    • They sucked until we gave up early in the 3rd. We didn’t give effort up to then, and Louisville couldn’t hit anything open at a decent rate. Once we gave up, they poured it on with a bunch of lay-ups that distort the final tallies.

It should be noted their starters stayed in way past the point we gave up… and way past the point Scotty gave up. Tat kind of coaching does not bode well for their team when they face someone who will give the same consistent effort they give.

  32. Rueck needs to recruit some fast, athletic, aggressive black players to take the next step. That’s what I learned today. Fewer 5-star white shooters who stand around. I mean it’s nice getting this far but to get to the next step that’s what’s needed.

And a preemptive “stick a piece of cake in your piehole” if you think that’s racist.

  33. 15 TO’s in 3 qtrs……….been a long, hard road for these gals; pisses me off that uck gals have had such a relatively free ride so far.

  34. OT- I thought Angry would get a kick out of this. The Sunday Oregonian has an article about football alums coming back and of course the headline is “Alums who’ve moved on to the NFL are glad Riley is back in the fold”. There are no quotes from Smith in the article, just Seumalo, Peko and of course the demented bikester and Tight End coach extraordinaire.

    • Can you email it to me or link it? Prefer email so it doesn’t get clicks here. Hit Contact on the right side of the page.

It deserves a post because Riley is the HC, in the media at least. He’s also in all the shots with recruits. Smith is the ball boy. Might have to dub him Mike Smith instead of Jonathan Riley soon.

      • I will check if it’s on Oregon Live and if so send you the link.. Remember, I try not to give them clicks either, but we subscribe to the paper edition for my wife’s job, so I was referring to the paper this morning.

Update- just e-mailed it to you. Slightly different online headline, Moran the author!

  35. Elite 8 is great for a rebuilding year. Those who mocked when I said final 4 in 2016 would be this programs highlight…another year in the books for my prediction. I just don’t see the next step without getting the type of athlete I mention above ^ and then timing gelling where we have a senior laden team. We should be in the tourney every year under Rueck, though.

  36. I can’t really complain about the refs, but when did raking across the forearm become “hands part of the ball” on steals in general? Fred Williamson would have been proud of some of those hammer chops! The officials should just say arm is part of the ball when dribbling and be done with it.

    • Just don’t want the Quacks to get a natty because we will never hear the end of it as people who have never watched a women’s game in their life will jump on the wagon. I think UConn is pretty pissed about last year though.

    • They had a great tournament run. I wish they’d gone down against Louisville in a bit more of a competitive fashion, but a loss is a loss. The team had some significant limitations, so it’s a credit to the program they advanced as far as they did.

  37. Do they go up-tempo and push for 3s in transition instead of the post kick out as the gameplan next year?

With inexperience and lack of skill inside, the 3s need to be lethal from everywhere to compensate to make a big run next year.

    • Hopefully Corosdale keeps developing and Washington is the second coming of Kolbie Orum. Seems like we’ll be an outside in team with all the outstanding guards we have. Defense should be a constant with the length the new comers bring.

  38. Great year. Bad day. Gals were on their heels from the start. All about ramping up the recruiting a little more. Guard heavy team next year, so it will be interesting to see if he alters his offense, or keeps doing what he does. Considering the losses from last year, this was a fantastic coaching job and a great run. Go Beavs!

  39. My women’s bracket is up to rank 171 on ESPN, off the back of a perfect Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight so far. Here is where it likely goes to shit though, as I have both UCLA and Oregon pulling the upset and Louisville winning the entire thing.

  40. Just got back from Lexington, and have to agree with angry, next step is speed. Louisville had a different type of athlete. Play that game 100 time and Louisville wins 95. And the 5 wins are games where we get helps from the refs, Louisville shoots poorly and we shoot lights out.

  41. WBB: So who is out next year? Assuming Slocum comes in to start at the 1, does Pivec then move to 2? Does that send Tudor to the bench with McWilliams at the 3? I would assume Corosdale stays at the 4 and one of the freshmen bigs plays the 5. Does Kalmer transfer out, and where does that leave Washington and Thropay? One of those may leave. I could see some transfers out of the program.
