  1. Abel’s 9 inning CWS winner was fantastic. But that was the 3rd CWS Championship, not that it dulled it the Championship, but it was not as as monumental as Fiesta bowl, because the Fiesta Bowl was largely uncharted territory. However a 3rd CWS Championship really put a stamp on the PROGRAM.

If the Beavers make the Final Four, which I think they will, this will be right up there with the Fiesta Bowl for me. Achieving this much, in the current NCAA context is pretty special in my view.

But the Fiesta Bowl was before this blog. I asked “in this blog’s history.” What would be our best bowl together, the 2012 Alamo?

      • After I posted, I realized I casted back too far…

The Alamo Bowl was very unsatisfying to me. Memorable for the wrong reasons; getting too comfortable, going away from Sorm Woods 6 YPC, allowing a DE sack after predictable sack…I think the Sun Bowl victory over Misourri was better than the Alamo Bowl loss, but that too was before this blog I think.

In this blog’s history, for me, an “Elite 8” is second to Baseball CWS championship. A Final Four appearance would tie it. I’d put WBB Final Fourin third.

An NCAA Championship over an undefeated Gonzaga would become a program legend….similar to the Giant Killers. : )

        • The Alamo Bowl was extremely disappointing and a major lowlight for Riley. But I think Angry’s point is more about getting to the game and the pregame excitement than the results.

Making the Alamo Bowl and the two Civil Wars for the Roses (and the conf championship) were the high points that I remember in football. And of course we fumbled all three away.

          • Oh yeah, the Wars of the Roses definitely the high point for football. And the low point in a way. The blog did exist, too, so it qualifies. At least the second one. I don’t know if I was around for the first…maybe on the old black wordpress site. Is there anyone left here from that site?

I can’t believe those games were so long ago. Time is scary fast.

  2. I can’t think of anything in football that is at this level.

WBB final four was amazing, especially given their turnaround from Lavonda.

One could argue that the men’s turnaround from Jay John to now is more amazing given the landscape of the men’s game. A final four might move them up, beyond Final 4 then definitely would be this team.

Baseball was probably tops but didn’t get the recognition that a deep tournament run gets in the media. But number one in the country is #1

    Rated:
    Baseball Championship
This year’s men’s basketball team, with a bullet- if they make it further, a final four would tie baseball
    Ladies and their Final 4

    • Okay I’ll just admit I’m an idiot because I can’t remember how the world series play offs work but isn’t it best of 3? If that is the case, then March Madness is at another level with the must win or go home layout. So this basketball #1, college world series #2, football bowls #3.

      GO BEAVS!

USA Today Preview with an accurate disclaimer:

“NCAA men’s basketball tournament action on a Monday night is nothing new. The championship game has been staged on that nights for decades now.

But Monday and Tuesday Elite Eight action is new for this year thanks to the tournament’s altered schedule. Hopefully, the different time slots will not affect the high drama with spots in the Final Four on the line.

Here’s a breakdown of Monday’s games, with predictions 100% guaranteed to be completely correct or totally wrong.

No. 2 Houston vs. No. 12 Oregon State, 7:15 p.m. ET, CBS
If you like high-scoring, free-flowing basketball, this won’t be the game for you. Both these teams used lock-down defense to get through the Round of 16, and this will almost certainly be another low-scoring affair. The different defensive philosophies on display, however, will be interesting to observe for hoops purists. The Cougars go almost exclusively man-to-man, but they also know when to switch and how to beat screens. DeJon Jarreau, who did a terrific job shutting down Syracuse’s Buddy Boeheim, will likely turn his attention to the Beavers’ Ethan Thompson. The Syracuse game also gave the Cougars something of a sneak preview of Oregon State’s zone look, though the Beavers generally do a better job finishing stops with defensive rebounds thanks in large part to Warith Alatishe. But if Quentin Grimes finds the range from the arc, Oregon State might not have enough answers.

    Prediction: Houston, 56-50.

I think the point someone else made in a previous thread -that Houston hasn’t really played a very tough schedule, is an important one and contrasts with OSU’s quality wins in the PAC 12 tourney and followed by wins against diverse foes like Tenn, OSU, and L-C, the first two considered to possess NBA-talent at the guards. I think OSU is going to win because of their experience. OSU is not just “underrated,” I suspect they’re under-evaluated and under-valued because pundits and foes keep thinking the clock is going to strike midnight on the “Cinderella Run” instead of considering OSU’s run valid and really looking at why it is happening.

    • Houston is most similar to Tennessee but without the inconsistency. Only lost three games through the year and riding a 10 game wining streak now.

But they did lose to ECU who finished last in their conference.

  4. Houston has ability to pressure and cause turnovers. That’s a concern. Grimes is elite. That’s a concern. I think we’ll play a lot of zone. On offense, need to take advantage of our size… play inside out. Hit some 3s. Continue to make FTs. Take care of the ball. This will be our toughest matchup so far. They remind me of Ducks talent and style-wise. That said, it’s our time… Beavs win 68-64

  5. If there is a game for Reichle to shoot lights out, this is it.

If there is a game for Calloo to shoot lights out, this is it.

Those two need to get going to free up Lucas and Thompson.

  6. I think it is number one already, because everyone knows about it. Just on a team call with people from 5 different states and they all knew about Oregon State reaching the elite 8. The CWS title just doesn’t get the some coverage. In my office at work, I have front page of the Oregonian from the 3 national titles plus Seattle Times for Seahawks Super bowl and the CWS titles get a “oh that’s cool” kind of response. Living in Nashville college baseball gets a lot of press due to Vanderbilt, but Luke’s situation kind of puts a black eye on those teams. Yes, I agree that Luke’s situation was a hitjob by the media, but perception is often reality.

My kid plays baseball with a bunch of Arkansas fans and I love giving them a hard time whenever there is a pop fly hit to there kid, when he catches it I’ll say something like “now is that so hard” but if he drop it I’ll respond with “don’t worry, he is good enough to play for Arkansas”

    • So in terms of prestige and the casual fan, this is #1, and in terms of fans/people on this blog, baseball is #1? That’s what I’m gathering.

      • This is #1 for me. If our baseball team wasn’t good, I wouldn’t care. I’ve been wanting us to be good in basketball most of my life.

All-time (for me), this ranks #2 behind the Fiesta Bowl. The 2006 baseball run is #3

        • Blog Single Moment History – I’m not sure you can beat the 2018 CWS final, but I think this ranks higher for me in the terms overall joy I’ve experienced based on the whole P12/tournament run. Now that will diminish quickly if it isn’t a catalyst for a sustain run of basketball success. Making the Tournament most years, and be a bubble team during down years is how I would define sustain basketball success.

All-time: The sustain run of success that followed is why Baseball 2005-2007 is number 1 for me. The Fiesta bowl has lost some of it charm because it fell off so quickly. I was a freshman at OSU in 2001 right after the Fiesta bowl and expectation were so high and never being able to reach those expectation over the last 20 years has almost made the Fiesta Bowl a painful memory.

  7. I think the Beavs keep the same recipe that has been working. Limit turnovers, take what’s there on offense (don’t get 3 happy) and find the mismatches. Bench guys sustain the lead wherever it is. Stay poised.

    • Yeah, I think Tinkle is going to try to take advantage of Houston’s aggressiveness by getting Houston into foul trouble, particularly Jarreau and Grimes.

      • We’ll know if they are trying to draw fouls if they attack the rim early. Can’t afford to be throwing the ball around the perimeter and get into the offense late.

Wonder if Houston will double Silva when he gets the ball?

        • I think they will with the size mismatch. Needs to establish position and work quickly. Kick it out for an open 3 if its there.

        • Saw some people on ESPN saying something similar.. Sounds like Houston fouls a lot any way with their defense..so it that is true then that would benefit OSU as they can get to the FT line and get free points

      • I thought they would do that against Loyola, but they seemed pretty hesitant. It’s a balancing act between attacking the opponent’s weakness and playing your own game.

  8. Google is showing Grimes listed as Out for tonight’s game. I am curious if there is any validity to this. That would be a huge blow to Houston.

  9. I don’t know if this was on purpose, but it seems Tinkle has a bench guy for every position that is a different skill set than the guy playing in front of him. Example, when Hunt comes in, he brings speed and confidence on both ends of the floor. Calloo, ability to make 3s and other big shots. I don’t want to see foul trouble tonight but if ET or Alatishe do get into foul trouble it’s not as catastrophic as it is for other teams. Lucas barely played the first half again LC. ET was out during the big run against OK State. Didn’t Andela have a wrap on his hand this last game? Still a head scratcher how he didn’t play a minute in the round of 32.

  10. We’re going to need a complete game to beat Houston. Lockdown defense, everyone shooting well and nailing free throws. Pretty much what we have been doing the last 6 games.

  11. If Alatishe can get another double double and they get the same from the combination of Silva/Andela then it gets real tough for UH. ET is going to be bird dogged by a guy his size so ZR and Lucas need to find a way because Beavs need more scoring from ZR.

Where does “Riley hired by Nebraska” rank on the list of all-time exciting moments on this blog?
It has to be up there right near the top, if not #1 overall

Yes, they took 2 of 3 from UTEP and won game three on the road. I’m being somewhat sarcastic, but at the time it was a considerable achievement for a team that went 0-18 in conference play the previous season. We thought CR was going to be the man. He actually won some regional coach of the year honor for that season.

One of the small ironies is they defeated Houston at Gill in a brutal low-scoring game, I think 49-45 to start their “CBI run”.

  13. You may have seen earlier in the twitter feed that Michigan WR/ATH Giles Jackson is in the portal. Since this morning, a few of our coaches(Henson/Lindgren/Yray) and Jackson have started following each other. Would indicate that there is at least some communication happening between parties, at the least.
Jackson had OSU on his short list back in 2018, before ultimately picking Michigan.

Almost game time. This is the first game I’ve felt a little nervous. The past ones felt like house money. This does, too, on a logical level, but since so much is riding on it I can see them playing tighter (or maybe I’m just projecting). Hopefully Tinkle does something (Xanax?? Parker’s Napkin??) to make they come out loose. Last game they were tight the first five minutes.

    • Fans are nervous due to the stakes but the players aren’t. After showing that resiliency vs Loyola (and Loyola had been built up so much) I don’t think they’ll have any confidence issues. They’ll run into ruts during the game, but they’ve always responded. If there was a ton of media hyping the team as a Cinderella, then yes, I could see them folding. But they aren’t Cinderella, as an analyst said, they are the unwanted house guest who sticks around until the end of the party. Why are they still here? They don’t belong.

  15. I know I’ve never cared so little about a disastrous bracket. Still have the Zags and Michigan alive though.

    Go Beavs. Have Fun.

  16. “Question: is this the most exciting moment in this blog’s history?
Curious how it compares to ya’ll vs the baseball titles, WBB final four, etc.”

For me, no. My expectations for a win are zero, and there will probably never be a greater thread than Riley’s first game at #TPB. AB gold.

Elite 8 game is less interesting than CWS Championship. If the Beavs can make the Final Four, I might change my mind. Championship game, absolutely. (But neither will happen, and I’m a killjoy ever since 2020 :D )

    • For me it’s exciting because this is the first time in my lifetime I have witnessed this level of success from our basketball team.

    • Biggest problem is them selves…like Angry, they’re finally nervous…a Beaver can be too tight.

Settle down, have fun, they can get back in it.

  17. Too many turnovers and way too many offensive rebounds. They have 13 more shots than we do. We are lucky it hasn’t gotten out of hand.

  18. We get murdered and no call then a ticky tac call on the other end. Quite a few over the backs not being called which has let them continually get rebounds.

Free throw line open a lot on offense. They need to attack there and shoot it or draw out the low post defender for an assist.

    • LONG rebounds… Beavers too tentative.

Get it! What’s the harm in trying? They’re going to be saying “I wish we would have…”

  19. 1
    2

Said it years ago, any sport entirely predicated on fouls is ridiculous ¯\_(?)_/¯ That’s why I could never really get into basketball.

  20. 1
    2

Well, Houston appears to be that good. Beavers having a tough go if it just finding shots. Not much to say right now but regardless of the outcome, the beavers having a great run in the post season and if they lose, at least they got to the Elite 8.

  21. 2

Unfortunately, I’m old enough to have watched the last elite eight game against Georgetown and I’m now traumatized all over again.

    • 1
      1

Unfortunately, I am the same in that remember that Georgetown game like it was yesterday. We couldn’t do anything right and the Hoyas couldn’t miss. Really thought was had a really chance that night as we had three future NBA players in Lester Connor (P10 POY), Charlie Sitton and AC Green. And then we got destroyed. Seems like deja by all over again.

      • 2
        2

I remember Ewing goaltended a couple of shots early on purpose, just because he could and it seemed to intimidate the shit out of the Beavs!

  22. 1
    1

1 for 6 on free throws. That’s when you know that you’re off. Lets see if tinkle can get these guys composed and they can start to make some shots in the 2nd half. Hopefully the ball will stop bouncing out to them and all of the rebounds too.

  23. Not much adjustments for the Beavs to make.

Offensively, need to put out a shooters lineup. Silver, Calloo, Lucas, Thompson and Alitishe.

Defensively, just need to rebound. They are getting caught watching the shot and not boxing their guy out.

  24. No reason to get in too deep with Tinkle. Already extended and earned his bonuses fir Tourney wins. Are we supposed to just be ok with all the years where we didn’t even make CBI, never making the NIT and then overreact from a good year thrown in? Odds are this is peak Tinkle just like there was peak Riley. He should have a few more good years left in him but he already has that and more built in for his current contract. Baby steps on any rework or OSU will end up being hurt by in in the long run. Mark these words.

    • I’m willing to give him another year or two and see if he can’t build on this. Coaches always make the argument they need 4 years on contract so that when the recruit they can tell the kid they will be there all 4 years. Now I think that is kind of BS logic in a world where coaches move on all the time but I can see the point they are making.

  25. 3
    4

Bottom line is Beavs got in over their head finally…had to go into this loose and view it as house money, and they didn’t. Hard to do at this stage, so I get it. Still a great season.

    • Angry I dont know what you are talking about. They played man and got killed, when they went 1-3-1 zone that’s what got then back in it.

      • Yeah the 1-3-1 got us back in it but Houston adjusted out of the timeout and drilled a wide open corner 3 in the soft spot of the D. Tinkle should have been playing chess there… lol.

        • Yeah that’s what was effective when they had GP II, he was long and athletic… now you have alatiche who is even longer… they haven’t had the athletes to run it as well in recent years… Tres sucked… it’s super effective when run well

          • It is a great defense but it has soft spots. I mean you almost never see it in the NBA because NBA shooters are like 50 percent from the corner 3. No zone can be run for very long against a good coach they will adjust. If they would have flashed the 1-3-1 out of the timeout and dropped back into man they might have forced a miss.

        • It helped when their guard Sasser took that shot to the head amd had to sit for awhile. Seemed like the momentum shifted right around then

  26. Too many dumb mistakes and missed opportunities in the first half doomed this team.
Oh well, at least baseball is killing the Huskies right now.

  27. 7
    38

Nice run..trying to remember these are kids, but I was dissapointed they came out so tentative. Over passing, ineffective ball and head fakes, jump up in the air, try a bounce pass on the way down, turnover….missing long rebounds. They lost before they came out of the locker room.

Is there a good coaching candidate out there who can work with OSU’s (apparently) improved athleticism? I suspect this is Tinkle’s high point. A good way to move on might be to let someone “poach” him. Otherwise, this could turn into an unproductive, long term extension. He’s had 8(?) years.

      • Remember you said the Final 4 was Rueck’s high point, he’d never get back to it?

You think Tinkle can top this? I don’t.

Or is there a way to capitalize on this that doesn’t cost a bunch of $$$ and move on from Tinkle?

      • I’m suggesting if another school offers him more money(?), let him go instead of over-paying for under performance. Remember, at one time, he had 3 of the top 100 recruits on the roster.

And if there’s a good candidate out there who can build with what OSU has on the roster. I suspect the tricky part would be not losing recruits who may now be interested.

        • Perhaps it’s time for Stephen Thompson to move on. Aside from acquiring more talent, the next logical step for the program is to find a coach that can develop point guards.

I am not sure how many coaches are on the market that can implement a defensive scheme as successful as Tinkle’s.

          • It occurs to me that Coach Thompson and his wife, Amy, might want to return to California to live when Ethan leaves. Any word on the effectiveness of Marlon Stuart’s coaching? When I see sideline shots/timeouts, it appears he is very much in the mix.

          • Not sure about Stewart’s coaching but he’s supposed to be the best recruiter on the staff. Makes sense with the uptick in talent we’ve seem since he was brought on board.

        • Other schools are not coming after Tinkle. It’s a fact. Who would go after him? He doesn’t have a resume that screams he’s an elite coach

          • Texas has a history of wasting money on bad coaching hires. At least for football. They always convince themselves the coach will take the next step because they’ll have UT money and recruiting advantages.

          • I’d think Texas would be dumb enough to overpay him. Maybe South Carolina fires Frank Martin, or Miami fires Jim Larrañaga

  28. 7
    1

Dam so close. Awesome run though and they fought all the way until the end. Wonder if they get most the team back next year?

  29. 2
    2

Dang, Sasha Goforth announces she plans to transfer to play closer to home. Too bad, I thought she showed a ton of potential as a freshman

  30. I was glad with the comeback. Only game I watched all season. Sometimes there’s just not enough halves. They’d have won two out of three halves.

  31. Made a game of it! Be really interesting to see how this experience translates into the future. Most of these guys are returning.

    • 3
      1

The only player that is likely to move on is Reichle. I think Thompson and Silva are interested in returning. Not sure what Potts wants to do.

If that’s the case, this team can get back to the Elite Eight. I think they’ll rewatch the film from tonight and realize that they can replicate Houston’s success on the glass with another offseason of work.

      • I’d be surprised if Ethan returns. Graduated in three years and now a masters. Ended with a great run in the tourney.

It’ll be good for other players growth if Ethan moved on.

      • You have it reversed as Thompson had given hints he is not returning while Zach has not committed either way. Ethan has improved his draft stock with the beavers late season success. Zach had no chance in the NBA but maybe in Europe. Regardless, this run by the beavers will help in recruiting and attracting potential transfers.

        • Yeah Thompson seems like he doesn’t gain a lot by coming back. If Tinkle gets most the band back together he needs to find a 1 and done transfer or HS player (I know unlikely). But seems like you could sell it as a great spot for someone with ability to draw multiple defenders to step into a solid supporting cast.

  32. I knew Houston had a ton of offensive boards so I decided to check the box score at the end. That was the tale of the game. Beavs 63 shots total. Houston 62 shots from inside the arc + another count them 32 from outside the arc. Their percentage wasn’t good but when you get 30+ More opportunities than your opponent it makes it pretty hard for your opponent to win. It was a fun ride though.

  33. 19

Sometimes you just run into a team thats better. Everyone is good when you get this far.

I for one am not sad. Thankful I got to witness a deep tournament run. Hadn’t happened in my lifetime.

That said, these guys should know what it takes now to go this far. No more excuses. On paper next years team should be a tournament team.

Big shout out to the players and coaching staff for an amazing few weeks. It was a great ride.

  34. I like Tinkle and hope he retires at OSU. I also hope that we don’t overpay for a “lightning in a bottle” run and end up with basketball’s version of the Mike Riley lifetime contract.

Hopefully, Tinkle and staff recognize that you can win playing system basketball with a mix of under recruited players and transfers who weren’t a good fit at their original school (much like what Smith’s strategy seems to be for football).

Ethan should turn pro and have a nice few years playing in Italy, like his brother does. Only speculating but I could see Reichle opting to transfer to a school like Portland where he can be more of an offensive focal point than he would ever be in Corvallis. That’s probably where he should have gone out of high school anyway.

The transfer portal will give and receive but I’m looking forward to seeing what a starting five of Andela, Alatishe, Silver, Hunt and Calloo can do after getting this experience.

    Unbelievable run.

      • I like Lucas but think Silver should have received more playing time this year. Whichever one starts, the other should be first off the bench. Jarod needs to work on creating his own shot off the dribble instead of just being a catch and shoot (or catch and flop) guard.

    • 13
      2

It’s funny you should mention that. I just saw Lindsay Schnell saying on the local news that Tinkle should be given a lifetime contract. I sort of resent that Schnell is the de facto expert on all things Beavers sports. It’s time for the local media to find someone else.

  35. 5
    1

This was so much fun to watch. It was an amazing run. My only disappointment was that they did not execute at all down the stretch after getting the game even. Sort of anti-climatic. I’m torn on Tinkle, I think he’s underachieved in the past. Let’s see what happens next year. I’m not up for Riley Part Deux. It sounds like Tinkle himself is jonesing for a lifetime contract.

  36. 4
    1

Lots of WBB players entering the portal. I’m sure Rueck is all over but there are two players from Purdue that sound very, very good. Miss State losing four players, Sasha leaving OSU….i guess we will see how it shakes out but I’m hoping that Aleah decides to come back especially with Goforth transferring.and Rueck hopefully bringing in 1 or 2 legit players from the portal. On the men side, great season and maybe WT has figured out the transfer game combined with HS recruits to build consistency in the program. This year was quite a ride for the beavers. Onto baseball and this Forrester kid looks to be the next big thing for the beavers. 17-5 and 5-1 isn’t a bad start but the most difficult part of their schedule is coming up. Oh, spring football too…..

      • That’s in 2022, Beers, Gardiner, and Blalock. Von Oelhoffen was to have been next year along with Kampschroder but she enrolled early.

Simmons is going home to Australia and if Goodman doesn’t come back, we’re very shorthanded on guards.

  37. Yesterday not such a great day to be a Beaver…
    Elite 8 loss
    Goforth transfer….huge loss
Wildfires in my hometown of Rapid City, SD threatening to burn down my childhood home, grade school, and church overnight. Need some rain in a bad way.

  38. Really proud of the team and I’m looking forward to One Shining Moment more than ever.
I was surprised to see a Pac-12 official on that crew. It isn’t like there is a shortage of basketball refs – figured if this guy “earned” an Elite 8 game they could have given him Baylor and Arkansas.

Again – really happy for the program – but Tinkle never should have washed that shirt.

  39. BG, Rapid’s your hometown, too? One of the current fires is up where my folks used to live–got hit hard back in 1988, too, when they lived there.

I don’t know if you want to leave details like this, but when did you graduate from high school, and which one?

On a lighter note, did you get my note from years ago about one of the president statues downtown? Right outside the presidents office there on the corner of Main and Seventh. Next time you’re there, take a look at him from the front, see what the artist had in mind regarding pose. Then meander on back of the sculpture, turn around . . . and tell me what he’s doing.

Kudos to the artist. Subversively well done.

    • Stevens High class of ‘79. In ‘88 a classmate got killed by a lightning strike on Skyline Drive when climbed up to see how close the fires were getting to town.
      Talk about bad luck!

Did not get the note. Going back in June to golf with three other guys that have been friends since 2nd grade. Will have check out the statue. Which President is it? Are you a Raider, Cobbler, or an Air Force brat from Douglas?

      • That’s tragic about your classmate. In my day, some of my former high school classmates were lost to the flood.

I was Stevens ’71, so you were just a wee thing when I graduated. The folks moved up in the hills to Westberry after I left home, and in ’88 their yard was a staging area for the firefighters. That area’s evacuated now.

The president is James Monroe, tipping his top hat, no less. The hilarious thing is this is the statue they put just outside the office for the president project. I’ve talked with that sculptor (before I noticed his joke), and as a result I personally am convinced this was not an artistic accident.

        • Some friends lost relatives in the flood. So a fellow Raider lol. So you were classmates with Catherine Bach, aka Daisy Duke?

          • Ha, this is the first I’ve heard of that kind of stardom in my high school! I really never knew of this–the things you learn on a sports blog–though I certainly must have admired her million-dollar legs. Per her Wikipedia page she graduated a year ahead of me, and I was one of those shy guys, so our social circles would never have overlapped. Baseball pro Dave Collins was a classmate. My social circle did include some of the guys in the group White Wing (formerly Forbidden Children, later named Asia).

          • I remember Dave Collins playing football. Nobody ever believes me that we had a drive in football stadium and you could watch games in your car.

  40. Just saw that Tinkle and bball staff waived their bonuses as part of covid cutbacks. Probably not seen as a big deal at the time but it cost big tinks 450k. He did get a 1 year extension.

  41. So I saw that tinkle gave up 450,000 in bonuses due to the pandemic. I think I’m okay with giving him a 1 year extension to reach the tournament. We all know how lifetime contracts can be the devil and downfall of a program. On paper he definitely overachiever on paper this year. The thing with that is that he put the program in that spot with previous seasons and recruiting. Making the elite 8 and and almost coming back to make final four was a heck of an achievement.

  42. Add a few more OSU coaches to the Giles Jackson mutual admiration club. He appears to be a pretty high priority transfer target for OSU. Coach Smith is involved now as well as several recruiting staff and GAs.
Here are some highlights from Jackson’s first season.
Mostly used as a return specialist as well as some time at WR.
Not a hige area of need, but would be a talent upgrade if he came here, so worth the effort. Also makes me wonder if we’re losing another WR to the portal sometime this offseason.

  43. Anyone see the story about the NCAA kicking the team out of the hotel at 1AM, forcing them to fly out in the middle of the night?

  44. 10

ah the morning after a heart breaking loss to end the year. Things don’t smell fresher and the sun isn’t shining any brighter. The bad taste in your mouth is still there.

It was a hell of a run and hopefully everyone enjoyed it for what it was. A combination of great coaching and player execution. It was earned at every point. There wasn’t much luck involved. They didn’t win games on hailmary shots or benefit from very timely calls. They won those games outright. They better be ranked in the top 15 in the final poll.

I don’t think there’s much to reflect on in the last game. Houston was the better team, they played exactly how their scouting report said they would and the Beavs couldn’t get them off their game like they did to opponents in the first three games.

So where does the team go from here? The ginormous question is, is this the start of something or a peak? Unfortunately, that answer won’t come soon enough. Is it the 2001 fiesta bowl or is this the 2005 baseball team?

    The things that will happen,
    – Tinkle will get an extension and raise. I agree anything longer than 4 years from now is too much. Contract should go until the 24/25 season with auto 1 year extension for making tourneys.
    – Increase in yearly pay is warranted. Increase the bonus amounts for postseason accomplishments.
    – Not sure if assistant coaches need raises or if they need any additional support staff but it can be looked at.
    – They’ll probably put up a a banner in Gill. Better be small.

    The roster questions,
    – Ethan, Zach shouldn’t expected to be back. I think they’ve accomplished everything they could here on and off the court. They’ll be in pictures on the walls of Gill forever.
    – Indications are that Silva is open to returning. That would be fine. His growth from the start of the year to the end was night and day. He became dependable. Didn’t matchup well vs Houston but Beavs wouldn’t have beat Tenn or Ok St without him.
    – Transfers out are always possible but it would seem less likely with any significant contributor.
    – Have three new guys coming in – Dawshawn Davis, Ahmad Rand and Xzavier Malone Key (Don’t know if this one is still happening as OSU hasn’t announced it). Did anyone remember that these guys were even coming? Seems like a letdown if doors are opening up to higher quality recruits.

    Next years team’s expectations,
    – The experienced gained in the tournament is invaluable. They know what it takes to win vs every other conference’s best. They have the confidence to beat those teams. The preparation and execution needed to win.
    – Can they bring that experience into every game next year? Playing down to an opponent is every team’s worst enemy.
    – Zero losses to quad 4 opponents!!
    – The expectation next year is to make the tournament. Don’t let this year’s run be labeled a fluke.
    – Recruiting should pick up especially in the high school ranks. Need to bring in one really good high school recruit a year.
    – Transfers can take notice that OSU is a place they can go to and win.

    Player growth expectations –
    – It was nice to see everyone show a little bit of what they could be at the top of their games.
    – Everyone needs to improve their shooting just a little bit. Not worried about losing scoring from Ethan or Zach. That can be made up.
    – Hunt, Lucas, Calloo all shot under 40%. Collectively they need to be in the low 40s. They do that, they’ll be all conference.
    – Alitishe could have a 60% shooting percentage if he improves his finishing near the rim.
    – Big men need to improve their FT shooting. Get into the high 60s, low 70s %.
    – An x factor is Silver. He got extended minutes in the tourney. Didn’t miss a shot, but only had 4 attempts. Not one turnover all year, of course he didn’t get any real time until the tourney. What’s his role next year?
    – Any growth from Johnson and Franklin would be a bonus. They are stuck at the end of the rotation and will have to battle for minutes.

    Starting Five Next Year
C – Silva – Will be dependent on matchups.
    F- Alitishe
F – Calloo – Might be better suited for the spark off the bench but has earned the opportunity based on his tourney play.
    G – Lucas
    G- Hunt

    In the rotation,
    Silver
    Tucker
    Andela
    Davis

The rest will have to battle is out for the last spots in the rotation. Hope iron sharpens iron here.

On paper next year, this is a bubble team. Arizona will be eligible next year making the conference that much tougher.

To make the tourney next year, they’ll need individual player growth esp from the guards. The PAC12 will need to show strength in the non conference so it can be a solid 6-7 bid conference.

    • Re: recruiting, we already have a “4-star” ‘22 PG committed in Cruz Davis (beat out Houston for him!) and we’re obviously still going after big men from looking at offers. Bringing in a top HS big man would be…big.

Rand sounds like he has a skill set like Alatishe’s, which will further boost our depth. If high octane defense is going to continue to be our calling card, having sufficient depth will be helpful.

      • Hopefully it opens the door on a guy like Mookie Cook out of Portland.

Had this run happened last year, maybe they land a Ben Gregg or Nate Bittle.

    • Key-Malone has Beaver stuff all over Twitter, so he seems to be committed. I wonder if there are academic issues in play and that’s why it hasn’t been officially announced?

    • We’ve been linked with grad transfer guard Brandon McKissic recently too. Sounds like OSU pursued him the moment he hit the portal earlier this month and are on his short list. Probably anbindication that ET is gone if we’re going so hard after a combo guard transfer. He looks to be pretty talented too, so hopefully it works out. Kansas is also a front runner.

The conference should be more competitive next year. USC might take a step back but I’d expect ASU and Washington to step up their competition. Oregon and Arizona look like the top teams.

What Houston did yesterday was inspirational. They don’t have an elite guy; rather, they win because every single player on that team hustles and is tough. I think replicating what they do is what will make OSU unique and get it to the tournament consistently.

      • I think this run more than anything will show players what tinkle is about. McKissic mentioned in a recent article he likes what the program is about. I love Corvallis but many guys from across the country could care less. It’s about what the coaches and program can offer them. I hope players take notice.

It kind of sucks for the Pac-12 that we are forced to eliminate each other in the tourney. USC and Oregon had to play each other and I’m super glad USC undressed the Ucks on national TV. But if USC and UCLA both win today there will be another Pac-12 vs Pac-12 match up in final four. If you can’t beat a conference let the conference beat itself. I know scheduling is hard but that part is a bummer.

  46. I’m not sure where everyone is staying – but if there are other teams in the hotel, having a team that has no incentive to observe COVID protocols might be a problem. Also pretty sure the NCAA charters all tourney flights – they’ll have one plane pick up two or three teams on the way to a tourney in some cases.

    • The tone of your comment almost sounds like you’re happy about this? Don’t forget Simmons going back to Aussie. Now three spots open on the roster. So far, next year’s roster looks like this in terms of scholly players: Taylor Jones, Taya C, Kennedy Brown, TVO, Savanna Samuels, Greta Kampschroeder incoming FR McDonald’s All American, Jalena M and Andrea A. (although I’m not sure she’ll ever play but who knows). In 2021, they had a 12-player roster so if they use the same #, they’ve got four spots to fill. It looks like SS and Greta will be playing the guard spots so virtually no depth at guard now with Sasha gone. Interior players will be outstanding so Rueck needs to fill the roster with shooters and the two young ladies from Purdue fit that need very nicely (Kayana Traylor and Karissa McLaughlin) as Purdue going through coaching changes. Who knows whether or not Rueck will look their direction but both sound very intriguing. I would look for Rueck to get commits on transfers very soon before the well runs dry.

      • Just checked videos out and Karissa McLaughlin certainly looks like quite a player, but I’m not so sure about Traylor. McLaughlin can shoot the lights and out and runs the floor very, very well. I definitely would pursue her as she looks very similar to Aleah Goodman.

    • Heck, I thought USC would win based on the way they handled the Ducks. Just another example of how crazy this tournament has been. Watch freaking UCLA beat Michigan now as the icing on the freaking crazy tournament cake.

      • The color announcer was a coach at Mt Hood CC and Columbia River High – I heard the other announcer mention that. They’re pretty good.

That new field at UofP looks pretty nice!

      • It looks to be a Sports NW broadcast. Isn’t that a cable channel through NBC? Probably why it’s professional-looking. Similar to the Grand Canyon broadcast through their local Fox affiliate.

  47. Townsend putting his opportunity to good use. Sure, Pilots are not PAC12 level hitters but he’s K’d 6 of 8 batters faced….and hasn’t hit a batter yet.
    Beavs up 5-1, t6

  48. Does every basketball player get another year or is it just the seniors? For example, does Altishe still have two more years if he wants them?

    • My understanding is everybody gets to basically pause their playing clock for 1 year, but it’a up to the teams also if they want to honor the extra year. For instance, if Tinkle deiced Alitishe could only play here for 1 of the 2 remaining years, Alitishe could still find somewhere else to play that would honor the extra year.

Thanks, it sounds like all classes have an extra year of eligibility then. It could be a bonus for someone sort of raw like Altishe. It’s funny, I was trying to think of who his game reminds me of and it dawned on me that it was Dennis Rodman (minus the extracurricular crap). Not sure if that type of player even has a place in today’s NBA.

Wow, Michigan choked it away. Howard looked like he was ready to explode. Nice to see the P-12 in, but they will soon be sacrificial lambs to Gonzaga.

    • I’m glad we didn’t look the worst out of the three Pac-12 teams in the elite 8 although who knows how bad it would have been if we played the zags. Ucla helps show the conference is pretty good not just lucky as the experts were claiming. Usc hardly made any 3s last night. Missing the offensive explosion they had against the quacks.

  49. Bill, RE your assessment for next year (and thanks for it):

“The roster questions,– Ethan, Zach shouldn’t expected to be back. I think they’ve accomplished everything they could here on and off the court. They’ll be in pictures on the walls of Gill forever.”

Couldn’t Ethan come back and just focus on basketball? I thought I saw posted on a previous thread here he doesn’t have a great shot of getting drafted and making an NBA roster, and if true, why not come back, focus just on basketball, and have a hell of a lot of fun before he plays a non-NBA career (Europe?) or starts his day job. Seems like a good situation if he’s not likely to stick on an NBA roster(?). Maybe he even improves his chances of an NBA career?

    • He certainly could come back but in my opinion, he’ll move on. Not sure what’s left to accomplish, 1st Team PAC12, Conf tourney champs, Elite 8 and two degrees. If the team was expected to make a run in the tourney this year and came up short, I would lean toward returning. But this run was special and he should keep it that way. If I am Tinkle, you nudge him out. There are new guys coming in and they aren’t going to want to sit.

  50. Great story on the Athletic about Drew Rasmussen. Some highlights for those who don’t subscribe:

Rasmussen spoke with Oregon State coach Pat Casey one night in a lengthy phone call. Rasmussen only discussed the objectives he wanted to achieve.

“It wasn’t like talking to a high school guy that I was trying to convince,” Casey said. “It was like talking to a grown man.”

After Rasmussen committed to Oregon State, another institution offered more scholarship money. He turned down the other school and stuck with his commitment to Oregon State because he believed that was best for his development. He also didn’t ask Casey for additional money.

“That didn’t even faze the guy,” Casey said. “That doesn’t happen all the time. For a guy to take that kind of a stand … that part, for me, I knew who he was.”

As they stood inside Casey’s driveway one afternoon in July 2017, Casey looked at Rasmussen with watery eyes.

It had been a special year capped with a memorable June. Rasmussen had just pitched in the College World Series. The Tampa Bay Rays had drafted him No. 31 with their Competitive Balance Round A pick. Rasmussen was going to receive a bonus worth approximately $2 million.

Then everything changed quickly. When Rasmussen went to Tampa for a physical, he said, the MRI showed he had torn his ulnar collateral ligament once again. He was caught off guard. This time was different. The first time, he knew. The second time, he had no idea.

Another arduous rehabilitation process was ahead.

While at Casey’s driveway, Rasmussen learned the Rays planned to move on from him.

Thoughts of being unable to control an outcome but being able to control a process — Casey’s words, originally — swirled in Rasmussen’s mind, he said, even during such a troubling time.

Casey asked, “How are you doing?”

“Case, relax,” Rasmussen said. “You got a team to take care of, but I’m fine. I’ll take care of myself. You’ve got 40 other guys here on campus that need help and look to you for support and leadership. Mentally, I’m going to be OK.”

Later, Casey said of the exchange: “I was just like, ‘Wow.”

    • I didnt know schools could offer more scholarship
Money. I thought it was pretty set in stone. No wonder some schools get better athletic teams.

      • Sports like basketball and football only offer full scholarships, so 1 sholarship for 1 player.
In baseball, they are allowed to divide up their scholarship money to split among multiple players.
Still the same total amount of full scholarship money is available to every team, they can just decide to split it up differently.
So maybe 2 pitchers each get 50% offers to play for Oregon State, but UW decides to offer a full scholarship to one of those pitchers, making his decision a little more difficult.

        • And to be specific, schools have exactly 11.7 scholarships that they have to divvy up to the entire team (up to like 30 players or something like that), so most get like 1/4 or 1/3 scholarships.
I think full ride baseball scholarships are rare or even non-existent as that would really eat up a lot of that 11.7 total scholarship limit.
