  1. NCAA did not do well today at the supreme court. While not the big case regarding name image and likeness revenue, it’s the first domino in what could redefine collegiate athletics.

    Here’s a summary,

Best quote – Barrett asked Waxman if it is really his argument that “consumers enjoy watching unpaid people play sports.”
“Yes, that is our line,” Waxman said.

  2. I liked Kavanaugh’s line about it being “a little disturbing” the NCAA is arguing that its consumers don’t want schools to pay their workers.

The NCAA’s argument seems to rest on the assertions that a majority of people don’t want college players to be paid and that the reason people like college sports is because they don’t get paid.

    • Well the money to pay players has to come from someone, and ultimately it would come from consumers. So in a way, the NCAA is right, the consumers enjoy watching college sports without having to pay ridiculously hight ticket prices like the pros.

      • Ticket prices are set by supply and demand. Compare ticket prices at Ohio State to a small conference school as an example.

AD’s more often lean on the university to give them more money than they do fans.

  3. Given the transfer portal activity, the coaching carousel and the high dollars for college tickets, the NCAA doesn’t still think the thing that sets their games apart from the pros is the sense of “community” the fans have with student-athletes and coaches do they?
And lets be honest, most of the fans in the stands – at least the ones that went to the school, probably would have gone somewhere else if they get a better scholarship offer as well.

Whoa, Texas has hired Wayne Tinkle to replace recently departed mbb coach Shaka Smart. Good for him. Gettin’ paid!

  5. For those actually hoping tinkle gets hired away, Chris beard is taking the Texas job. The unc job opened up but that’ll go to someone connected to unc.

    • Start a poll? I don’t want him to get hired away but an extension for a total of 4 more years would be preferred. Add a year each season he makes the tourney. Wonder if Thompson Sr. leaves if/when ET goes pro somewhere.

He does but he had two years left so now 3 years left. Coaches usually need 4 left to say to recruits they’ll be around all 4 years. He’ll definitely want something like 6 years but I would offer a higher pay rate for the 4 years instead of 6 years. Might have to agree to a low buyout as an offset to length. And if anyone wants to hire him away, that means the program is in good shape.

  6. Maybe it’s just me, but I thought the defense the Beavs played at the end of season and the run in the Tournament is like the D played in Tinkle’s first 2 years as coach. It was awesome to see…

No, not just you. That’s what gave me hope, albeit very little after not seeing anything for the 4 years before this season, that he could coach. Looking more and more like it was a sons issue. During the last broadcast the announcers mentioned chatting with WT and Thompson Sr about coaching their kids and how WT wanted Thompson to be hard on Ethan with WT being the good guy. Thompson said he could only do it for 2 weeks. Imagine what that was like with 3 kids there for 3 years.

This years team was more athletic than what WT inherited and they’re only becoming moreso with the incoming class. Now if we only had a more consistent offense.

    • JJ with the Ryan Nall speed. That’s going to hurt his draft stock.

Wright’s height and speed are going to get him drafted somewhere.

      Dunn with a 4.39 40. Wow.

  7. There’s a DT I’m keeping an eye on as a potential JC transfer. Demeco Roland, out of Hutchnson CC in Kansas.(same school Latrell Bankston went to) Rivals lists him as 6’3″ 306lbs, but I’ve seen him listed as closer to 320lbs on another site(see links)
He was a Texas Tech commit this cycle but never committed. Not sure if they didnt have room or if he was just exploring his options.
Anyway, could be a guy we hear more about in the near future, but as with all DT recruiting at OSU, I’m not counting on anything.

  8. JJ definitely showed he had breakaway speed last season. Maybe he just runs faster during games (when guys are chasing him)?

  9. Lot of righty’s to face Utah RHP……made me look at roster, Beavs don’t have many left handed hitters.
3 guys in today’s lineup with average over .300

  10. Refreshing change to hear Parker calling the game, no ill effects from his scuffle in Indianapolis.
Abel set to start tomorrow, maintaining his Friday night cycle.
Washburn K’s the side and issues two BB’s as well, on to the b1.

    Beavs 4-3
More of a battle than it should have been.
Mulholland gets save despite giving up 2BB, 1 hit, 1run while facing 6 batters in the 9th.
    Combined pitching stats: 6 hits, 11K, 7BB, 1WP, 3HBP…………BB/WP/HBP still a concern.

      • Yes, two of the three Ute runs were the result of BB.
Just for comparison, the Utes gave up 3BB and 2 WP……Beavs 7 and 1.
Oh, and the Beavs hit 3 batters while Utes didn’t hit any.
Again, more of a battle than it should have been against a team from the lower portion of the conference,

    • Ya missed a 4/4 day at the plate for Dukart and some nice baserunning by Melton (he went 3/4 too).
Claunch and Casey quiet at the plate.

    • Sounds as if Canham was growling at several aspects of the Beavs play last night; it’ll be interesting to see if there is a noticeable reaction or any obvious lineup changes. Could tell a lot………….or not.

    • Before last night the Beavers were 4th in the nation in fielding percentage. Starting to look like a classic down year Pat Casey team. Great pitching and D combined with inconsistent bats. Hopefully there will be the occasional year or two when the bats are popping. Gives you hope though that Canham is growing into the role.

    SASHA GOFORTH
From a well thought out set of tweets from Sasha’s dad:
“To everyone in the Oregon State Women’s basketball program who supported Sasha including coaches, trainers, and other staff, thank you! She learned so much from you all. We remain big supporters of the program…To the many Beaver fans who have sincerely wished her well in her new journey, thank you! …The Beavers women’s basketball fan base is truly second to none. Sasha and I both wish that she had had the chance to play in front of a packed Gill.”

There is more in the string of tweets, boils down to being the right move for a homesick young lady. Her hustle will certainly be missed.

    • Not unexpected. Got more than a few guys ahead of him. He should get some decent offers from mid majors and now with some tourney experience, he’ll be setup to do well.

Don’t see anyone else transferring unless they were really unhappy with their role. Plenty of opportunity with minutes from Thompson and Reichle now available.

        • The buzz on him when he came in was that he was more of a defensive specialist. With the guards we have transferring in, there wouldn’t be many minutes for him.

Nick Daschel must have some inside information. He’s alluded to a “couple” of players transferring in his Beaver Q&A column. I thought Franklin might be one of them, not sure who the other would be if it’s really more than one.

    • 74% completion, plays for a winner (13-1), pretty good offer sheet with Arizona and Pitt. Looks like a typical Lindgren QB target.

Stanford WBB beats S.Carolina and moves onto the finals. Will be so sad for UofO that they were so close to being the conference darlings last year before Covid struck, and now Stanford could be the first Pac12 wbb team to win a title in a pretty long time.(stanford in the early 90’s was the last Pac team to win it all)

  14. Utes up 1-0 in the t1
Abel, pressing with no run support yet (?), tosses 2 BB and 1 WP. He did not allow a hit and did get one K.

  15. Preston Jones with his second nice throw tonight gets credit for cutting down the runner from second at home, close play….sometimes the ump sees it our way.

Abel went 6 full and still is not as sharp as we’d hoped, hopefully he’ll make abrupt improvement next week vs quackers. In addition to knocking down the ump, his line: 98 pitches, 4 K’s, 3 hits, 5 BB, 2 HBP, 1 WP………still giving at least 1 free runner per inning….and the toughest part of the schedule is yet to come.
NOTE: Per Parker, Dorman says he’s not concerned with Abel’s HBP’s…..ummm, OK, he’s the one getting paid.

Just now a beautiful bunt single by Casey to load bases with no outs b7, Beavs up 8-3

  16. Who had Arizona and Stanford in the finals in their bracket? Not sad to see UConn lose. Didn’t watch a second of the game. Go Pac 12!

  17. Almost hard to fathom, but with a little better free-throw shooting and tighter execution in the last four minutes of the game, we could be discussing MBB’s upcoming Final Four appearance against Baylor this afternoon. Mind blown!

    • Down the stretch was poor execution. Ethan tripped, hunt lost the ball out of bounds, and two bad 3s taken by lucas and hunt. But poor free throw shooting also hurt the team. Of course the rebounding was atrocious. It was an impressive comeback tho.

    • Or, getting like two or three defensive rebounds at any point in the game.

But kind of glad they broke my heart. Shows the fight they have in them and hope they can carry that over into next year.

      • I haven’t done much research, but I remember him almost being run out of the game for recruiting violations, but the media narrative now is that the things he did back 12-15 years ago are basically legal with today’s recruiting. I never liked him, thought he was smug and a courtside whiner at Wazzu. I wouldn’t mind seeing Baylor win.

  18. RPI
Sure, it’s early and the important thing is to be playing your best at the end of regular season. With that in mind I still thought a look at RPI would be informative.
Quackers are #2 in RPI with a SOS rating at #4; Ariz RPI 4/SOS 5. For comparison, OSU and Stanford hold RPI’s of 31 and 30 and SOS in mid 90’s.

First things first, gotta sweep Utes and Gonzaga (RPI 32), but next weekends CW looks to be a real test. Quack pitchers did really well vs Beavs in that non-con series. Pitching is supposed to be a Beavs strength, it’s time to show it, I don’t see quack pitching allowing 8.6 runs/game (that’s the Beavs avg for last 6 games). But, half that could do the job if Beav arms are at their best

Anyone expect a CW sweep?………….(by the Beavs)

    • Sweep no, but they need to win the series. The oregon games are the start of the schedule where nearly every team is likely making the postseason. Only Cal, Loyola and Portland won’t make it. The rest all have good chances.

Best case scenario, they win the majority of the remaining games, win conference, host regionals and supers. RPI would be near the top if this happened.

Middle scenario, go 500 rest of the way, host regionals.

Low scenario – win the series they are supposed to, lose the 50/50 series. Make regionals.

horrible scenario – lose series they aren’t supposed to, lose the 50/50 series. don’t make tourney.

    • I doubt they sweep. They have made a lot of pitchers look good. Very inconsistent to non existent at the plate so far this season. Should Dorman change his approach to pitching inside? Could possibly help with putting guys on base unintentionally but will it increase hits is the question?

  19. Beavs have some work to do. Down 4-1 top of 6. This is one of those series where a sweep would be nice against an inferior opponent.

  20. Today seems like more an issue with the bats (which went off to the tune of 17 runs last night) than the pitching. Only 1 out of 5 runs was earned? Hjerpe got unlucky giving up 4 runs on 2H/2BB.

Offense is just inconsistent. The lineup is full of decent hitters, but no one that really stands out.

    • Agree 100%
After giving away free baserunners at a maddening clip, the guys on the mound today gave up a total of 3BB and 1HBP….a far cry from the 1+/inning lately.
Several batters have had decent “mini streaks”, but inconsistent is an apt description for them so far.
      Go Beavs!
