At 6pm tonight, the Beavs tip off the second half of their season versus the Huskies. Yay? Since we all know the game will be a blowout, I'm not going to waste time writing about it. This afternoon I am getting a crown on a left molar, and I'm left wondering which is going to be more painful: the tooth or watching this game. Anyway, I copied the writeup below from the official site. It will give you an idea what to expect tonight in the event that the word "Washington" didn't already paint the picture.

THE SERIES: Oregon State and Washington meet for the 288th time in history with the Huskies holding a 152-135 advantage. Washington won the first meeting this season, 103-72, on Jan. 8 in Seattle.

vs. WASHINGTON: Oregon State has lost eight straight to Washington, its second-longest drought against a Pac-10 team to the 12-game losing streak to UCLA. The teams played on Jan. 8 in Seattle and the Beavers jumped out to a 37-28 lead before the Huskies went on a 12-2 run to take a 40-39 lead at halftime. Washington scored 75 points in the final 23:25 to win, 103-72. Jared Cunningham had 21 points and Roberto Nelson added 15 to lead the Beavers. The Huskies won all three meetings last season, including a come-from-behind, 59-52, victory in the first round of the Pac-10 Tournament. The Beavers last win over the Huskies was 73-65 on Feb. 22, 2007 at Gill Coliseum and their last win at Hec Edmundson Pavilion was 80-72 on Feb. 20, 2003.

INTERESTING STAT: The Beavers are 4-0 when shooting 50 percent or better from the field and 4-0 when their opponent shoots under 40 percent from the field.

Government takeover of the internet is starting and will get worse with time. Welcome to 1984.

  2. Interesting sentiment by Robinson in the Oregonian today…he risks losing the team by calling players out, but he’s right, these guys play as if there is no expectation to win, just hang around. It’s infecting the underclassmen.

    http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindbeaversbeat/2011/02/oregon_state_game_day_robinson.html

I’m not sure it’s completely fair to lump Wallace or Deane in this group (“the seniors”). Both of those guys give effort and want to win, they just aren’t very good.

    • It’s Jerramy Stevens all over again. UW players get preferential treatment from the justice system because they do, and UW coaches will take advantage of it while they can.

I mean, how do you prove that he forced you to suck him and he fingered you? Even if there’s a little blue dress with semen on it, that doesn’t prove much other than Overton is just scum of the Earth. He’ll get off. PUN INTENDED!

It doesn’t matter. He’s damaged goods. He’s a distraction to this team so much so that his teammates and fans are calling out Wazzu’s student section for yelling, “No means no!” at last week’s game.

Seriously UW fan? I mean, I know the team is just a bunch of classless punks who circle the stupid-wagons when they feel being caught is like being a victim. But UW fan should realize that if someone (since nobody has officially been named) hears the chant, “No means no,” then he needs to agree with it. That’s all.

So tell me. Is saying “no means no” a classless thing to do? Would it have been classless if UW fans were intelligent enough to respond with “just say no” whenever Moore had the ball?

  3. The Seniors and Burton have been their usual terrible self. I cannot wait till the seniors are gone. It is too painful watching them screw up on a consistent basis.

      • Burton commits a lot of turnovers, but at least Burton is unselfish (sometimes to a fault) and works hard on defense and on the boards. As for Haynes, I’m at the point where I turn off the TV or walk away when he comes into the game. I can’t stand to watch him play anymore. I hate his selfishness, his playground attitude, his chucking, and how he wrecks any semblance of team chemistry or ball movement (or team defense) as soon as he takes the floor. If I were coach, Calvin Haynes would NEVER get on the floor again, even in garbage time. Seriously.

      • True that Burton is unselfish, but I don’t think he works hard on defense or the boards. He looks like a matador when playing D and a totem pole when rebounding.

  4. A terrible call by the officials gives Washington opportunity to tie game at halftime and they do. I cannot stand the Pac 10’s officials they all are awful.

    • Huskies were bailed out. Collier had guys jumping on his back and pulling on his jerseys and reaching in. It was just a horrible call. Romar has been getting in the refs face and throwing a tantrum and late in the half was getting the calls.

Those points are big and they get em because the ref isn’t doing his job. Those are the ones that hurt.

    • I think Ahmad Starks, shortest player on the floor, got at least 2 layups! Perhaps he can coach the taller players. They did far better in this game although there was still a lot of “missed the layup but he was fouled.”

  5. It’s time for college basketball to eliminate charges in the paint. Make it easy for Pac 10 refs to make the call. They can’t make the decision between block/charge effectively so just make sure they can’t screw it up.

Personally, I’m tired of seeing guys flop in the paint trying to draw charges.

  6. Beavers lead by 4. This is what makes this team so frustrating. They can go toe-to-toe with UW but lose to Stanford by 14? Just confusing. This game also shows when the Beavers really give the effort and actually has some focus they’re actually pretty good.

  7. Btw, I hate when announcers say “don’t foul, it’s stops the clock” last I checked making a shot down the stretch already stops the clock.

  8. I’m not sure if Burton is in the game since I don’t have the game on TV til 9, but Burton needs to be off the floor. Washington is going to foul, and if he’s out there he will kill us on the line. If Robinson has him in I’m going to be furious.

      • Actually it isn’t that tough if the right person is shooting the free throw. A great free throw shooter can do it because they have the right touch. Shaq for instance might throw it through the back board lol. I can do it just because I’ve messed around with it.

  9. This is an incredible win. I’ve been waiting for one like this that could trigger a second-half surge as they approach the conference tourny. Good job by CR calling these guys out and saying they’re happy to just hang around. It seems to have worked.

  10. One thing that stuck in my craw was Parker’s reporting about how Isaiah Thomas was taunting the Beavs when they played in Seattle.

    F YOU Isaiah Thomas!

    • I hate Thomas and Bryan-Ammaning. They’re both tools. Last time they were so over the top and taunting the Beavers. So this win felt really good. I’m sure hoping a win like this gets the Beavers rolling playing to their potential.

Tonight the Beavers finished the Huskies off and played well with the lead. Us as fans have been waiting for that and it finally happened.

  11. Beavers will have to be focused for Saturday. The Cougars will come in pissed off and needing a win badly. They got torched by UO tonight by 26.

    • isn’t that what we all said about UW for tonights game? They’re on the road and we’re at home. The hungrier team will indeed win, but I think that’s going to be us on Saturday.

        • I said it because Oregon State after big wins gets overconfident and doesn’t show up for next game. Also, WSU got completely embarrassed tonight and will be pissed off and come out giving it their all. UW loss to WSU but it was a close game and didn’t feel embarrassed. UW also, felt that OSU couldn’t compete with them and was overconfident. WSU won’t even be thinking about OSU’s record they just wanna kick someones ass.

OSU if they come ready to play should beat WSU. I would like to see them get rolling and show what their potential really is.

  12. Beavers played smart and made sure they got good shots. One small step but much appreciated to keep Beaver Nation from feeling too ill. Need a sweep this week so here’s to taking out those pesky Cougs and getting some pay back for football..Go Beavs!

  13. I thought the interior defense carried the day for once. Brandt, Collier, Burton and even Johnson competed on almost every play. I mean, the Beavers did not even play up to their potential and still won the game. Too bad that they are not motivated to compete like this every time..

  14. Great win. Now let’s build on it.

Starks and Nelson have proven that they can shoot 3’s from well beyond the arc, and can also drive around many defenders. As for Cunningham, he is faster and more athletic than almost any of the guys trying to cover him.

When you have guards like this, it’s not rocket science. Play Starks, Nelson, and Cunningham outside. Spread the floor. Make defenders guard these guys one-on-one, 25 feet from the basket, where there is lots of room. If defenders sag towards the middle, Starks and Nelson will punish them with 3-pointers. If defenders come up, all three guards have the ability to evade their man, break down the defense, and make something happen.

The big guys (Collier, Brandt, Burton, Johnson, Brown) stay down low, hit the boards, keep their hands up, and watch for passes when the guards break down the defense. And once in a while work some screen-and-roll plays at the top of the key with the guards.

Calvin and Lathen — you guys keep the towels fresh and the water cold.

      • Mercedes: I diss Calvin because he is a selfish, one-dimensional player who often takes bad shots and who rarely exerts himself on defense. Yes, in this game Calvin made some key shots in the last few minutes. But that doesn’t mean they were good plays on Calvin’s part (some were, some were not).

Calvin Haynes, overall, is a big negative for this team. When Calvin comes in the game, he hogs the ball and dribbles too much. The other Beavers stop moving, and don’t get enough touches. Defenders sag off their men and play the passing lanes, or swipe at the ball as Calvin dribbles. The result is turnovers, bad shots, fast breaks for the opposing team, and other fun stuff like that.

To me, the biggest knock on Coach Robinson is that he gives Calvin Haynes so much playing time. If it were me, Calvin would be at the end of the bench (even after Daniel Deane, who lacks D-1 skills, but at least plays unselfishly, and fights hard for rebounds….)

        • Thank you, thank you. I appreciate your clear, detailed description of his faults as a basketball player and the reason(s) he shouldn’t be in the lineup as often as he is. There’s no way I’m that discerning.

BTW. I don’t want to take any credit for the W, but BEFORE the game I sent off a meagre contribution to the practice facility.

          • +1 for contributing to the practice facility!

As for Calvin Haynes, next time he comes into a game, watch what he does. More important, watch what his teammates do. See if you agree with what I said about Calvin hogging the ball and causing bad things to happen. If not, please let me know….

          • This is true about Calvin Haynes. Last night he came in and the first 5 or 6 offensive possessions he managed to screw up with awful shots and turnovers. If he actually played within the offense for once, I doubt any of us would have an issue with him.

  15. I’m curious what the anti-Craig Robinson guys think about this game.

Beavs first win versus a ranked opponent since 2006. Robinson kept a core nucleus (Collier, Brandt, Cunningham, Starks) in for most of the game. And he called out the seniors beforehand. Personally, I loved it…renewed my (ever so slightly waning) faith in the man.

      • Honestly, this was for the first time in a while that Craig really didn’t make a mistake as far as I could tell. He had solid substitution patterns, didn’t mess with the defense that was working and called timeouts to end UW runs before they really had a chance to get rolling and got his guys back on track. it was impressive. he outcoached Romar by a lot.

Craig in the past as soon as about 2 weeks ago made excuses for his team and was too laid back on them. Now he demands more from them and expects nothing but their best effort. I’m thinking he felt that was the only way to really grab their attention. Tonight you could tell he wanted this game badly and was fired up from the opening tip. I loved how he got that tech. He was standing up for his guys and wasn’t gonna let his guys get bullied. That got them fired up and from then on they controlled the game and frustrated UW.

My biggest gripe with Craig was he was too relaxed on his guys and had some bad substitution patterns and made too many excuses. That really seems like all that has stopped. If he keeps doing what he did vs UW I like the Beavers chances the rest of the way.

I feel really good about what this team can do the rest of the way.

Can you guys imagine if this team plays to their potential come Pac-10 tourney time? They could challenge anybody for that automatic berth. That’s if they play to their potential which I believe may just happen.

    • What I said above…

I thought Craig did a better job than usual coaching this game. But, as usual, he gave Calvin Haynes way too much playing time. I’ll become a CR fan when he stops playing Calvin, and gives all of Calvin’s time to Starks and Nelson and Cunningham. Those guys are the future. (They are also better players — today — than Calvin ever was or ever will be.)

      • Yeah, CR called a “good game” from start to finish. The team played like I thought they would all season. In other words, still running the Princeton a lot, but with the athleticism to take it to the hoop in transition and play tough defense. I mean, this should have been a 15-20 point win if they team could make their lay-up!. CR really needs to develop Brandt into the point-center of the future. I think he just needs playing time and confidence.

    • As a diehard Beaver fan and absolute hater of the Huskies and all of their “street crap” it was outstanding. In reality, CR has a lot more work to do. Jay John beat top 25 teams on occassion also. A bigger question, is why can’t his teams play to their potention at least 90% of the time? They don’t even have to be perfect to beat good teams. If you saw a 43% FG, 63% FT and 16 TO stat line, you might have thought the Huskies won going away, but because of a sustained defensive effort they overcame some shaky offense. They have to play that way every game to be successful.

    • Yes to a certain extent. Craig challenged them and demanded better now and they responded. he just got to relaxed and they haven’t focused. When they fall down a lot of times that challenges them and they fight back. When they had the lead in the past they were no longer challenged in their mind and therefore didn’t give the effort. That’s how I see it. I believe now that Craig has demanded they play hard at all times they will get it going.

Next weekend if they can beat the LA schools in so cal they will then have the confidence to win on the road and can finally take off.

Let’s see if the UW win for OSU allows them to get it going as a program.

UW’s win vs OSU in 2004 allowed them to take off. They were in the same position as OSU is in now, confusing bad losses, not able to consistently play good basketball and then they got the win in OT vs OSU and the program took off. Let’s hope a similar situation happens for the Beavers.

Must read article for Beaver B fans.

This is an excellent article from a month ago about the Beaves playing to their level of competition. This is not a new thing and seems to be a pattern under CR. CR and the players have got to find a way to approach every game like they are playing a top 25 or top 50 team. If we didn’t lose to teams we should clearly have the edge over we would be in great position for the NIT. Not sure if anyone has any ideas but something is different in the way this team is preparing or executing.

  17. Sure, it feels great to win Angry, but I’m not impressed. This is something that should have been evident since the beginning of the year, and to me, it’s looking like football seasons all over again where they can fuck away one half of the season, then end up with a barely over .500 record to become some sort of mythic heroes.

If they would have done this on the road, I would have been more impressed. At least then we can say that they were warriors out there. Instead, they performed their upset within the comfy confines of their home court.

In my opinion, this team not only needs to achieve an over .500 record at the end of this regular season AND either make a very deep NIT run or NCAA for me to give Robinson any credit.

But I won’t worry about that because this upset will only make them soft and an ass kicking from the Cougars is going to be shortly underway.

He coached ONE good game this year, people, let’s not call him a hero yet because he has sabotaged us to this point.

    • Errr…I meant to say Robinson needs to get an over .500 record at the end of this season AND lead us to a deep NIT run or NCAA first round appearance for me to believe we’re making any progress.

  18. I am beginning to think Robinson and Riley are drinkin’ the same stuff. The inconsistency of their teams matches the coaches attitude…often laid back and only occasionally “in your face”. Remember Riley’s sideline penalty last season and how that fired up the team AND fans?

The erratic substitutions of Robinson remind me of the poor play calling allowed by Riley, when these things are improved the result is so much better.

When I read Buker’s quote from Casey I was beginning to think he was going soft and erratic too. Steve Gress in the Gadget Times (http://gazettetimes.com/conferences/pac10/article_f27c816e-2e72-11e0-9fe3-001cc4c03286.html) then quoted Casey as saying, among other things, “I think it will be a surprise to a couple guys that are supposed to be guys for us who won’t be starting because of their lack of intensity and their satisfaction with themselves”.

  19. Re Robinson: In an earlier post you mentioned that Robinson “risks losing the team by calling players out”. If indeed that is his thinking then imo that’s a key issue and it’s something he has to overcome. If he has that kind of concern then the players can sense it and it effects how they play. Maybe all this team needs is for CR to become a hard ass.
