  1. What I love so far is the ball pressure and the Beavers aren’t allowing any easy passes. They’ve got their hands on so many passes. Really love the effort on defense.

  2. We’re getting killed whenever they run a Pick and Roll, and we’ve turned the ball over a few too many times, but the team is otherwise running smoothly.

I wish Roberto would be more active in the offense though; either he plays too passively, or other people are trying too hard(Starks).

    • I don’t know what to think about Nelson right now. He seems like he’s not really sure what he’s supposed to do when he’s out there. Granted I’m no basketball analysts, but it seems to me whenever he’s out there he’s just kind of standing around waiting for someone to pass him the ball while everybody else is moving around. Maybe this type of stuff has to do with why he’s not starting?

      • Roberto has to be more selfish. He’s too passive. He’s too good of a player to just stand around and be passive on offense.

        • It’s not that he’s just standing around, he tries to facilitate a lot. But we really need him to be more selfish and create shots. Right now, Starks is really the only one that will do that, and he’s just worse at it than Roberto.

    • He was on the team last year but hurt his elbow about 5 games into the season. He’s really talented. Only a redshirt freshman. Incredibly athletic, plays solid defense and is very versatile. He has both small forward and power forward skills. He can defend wings and big guys. In another year he will be REALLY good.

  3. Our fullcourt man press, and occasional trap, is just wrecking them(although the trap doesn’t seem great, it’s working).

Roberto with the entry pass inside that was too flat and stolen. He really needs to be more aggressive, not just looking to pass all the time.

  4. Roberto passed to Jared, and then did not even look back as Jared wanted to kick it back to him quickly. Exactly what I’m talking about.

At least he led that fast break nicely.

  5. Roberto has an issue between the ears right now. He is overthinking everything. He needs to just play some ball and stop worrying about everything. He’s way too passive.

  6. Roberto penetrates, was met by one man near the paint, and Roberto jumps in the air and tries to pass it to the corner, easily stolen. Horrid play.

He REALLY needs to just be more aggressive. So many of these forced passes are TOs. But it looks like coach Rob subbed him immediately for it, good.

  7. Great pick and roll to end the half with Jared and Joe.

Why can’t we just run that, instead of our terrible “Pass around for 30 seconds, then turn it over because we pass too much” offense?

  8. A lot to love in the first half. Offense is looking good. The pick and pop/roll defense needs to be improved. Some guys have been slow to close out on these plays. Once they get that corrected they’ll be pretty good defensively.

  9. It would be nice to see a complete blow-out in the 2nd half especially considering the Beavs LOST their N-7 game to Texas Southern last year.

  10. It’s easy to say Cal State isn’t any good… but remember last year we were battling and even losing to these types of teams in the beginning of the season. We’re doing what we are supposed to do against these type of opponents and that’s extremely encouraging.

    • Indeed. In sports, any little team can get lucky and beat a powerhouse, so a 17 point lead at the half is something I can’t complain about.

Just cut the TOs down on offense, and fix the PnR defense, and we’re ready for the Pac12.

    • Two years ago, a pretty mediocore Beaver team beat CS-Bak 73-39, so I don’t consider these guys even a decent mid-major, but you’re point is well taken, OSU lost to Utah Valley St. last year. There are better tests upsteam anyway.

  11. Brandt just penetrated from the top of the 3 point line, past two players, and hit the layup+1. Nice work, to go with his good defense and rebounding.

    • That’s what makes Brandt frustrating. He’s capable of those type of plays a lot. He’s incredibly skilled. Once he stops overthinking things he plays some good ball. Would like to see more of that.

  12. Joe inbounds the ball straight to a CSB player, then fouls him. Sick work.

This press is murdering us right now, this is very embarrassing.

  13. PnR, Burton is SOOOOO SLOOOOOOOW and his man easily scores.

Burton with like 2 TOs, a few that could have been, and now his terrible rotations.

Beavers up 11, this is ugly.

  14. Beavers have lost their focus and are playing careless. If they hadn’t thrown really poor passes this one isn’t even close. Burton was playing so well but the last 3 minutes he’s played pretty badly.

  15. Roberto with a few bad plays in a row, and after he fouls on offense, Rob takes him out.

Figure out how to fix that guy, because he looks broken.

    • Yeah, I understand that but I don’t understand why he’s taking so many of those shots. Stick to the rebounding and defense and leave the shooting to the guys who can shoot.

  16. Aside from a bad 3 minute stretch Burton has played really well. I’ve seen a lot of important with him. He’s developed a little bit of an outside shot and his passing is much better. Not seeing those poor passes that have no chance like we’ve seen the previous two years. He’s also playing solid post defense. Very encouraging.

      • Well, the offensive system lends itself to these terrible situations late in the clock, so in that sense, no, they are not well-coached.

But coach Rob is making good substitutions, and players look better than they did last year, so in that sense, they are well-coached.

        • I’m not so sure about his substitutions. How good his decisions are will be more evident once OSU is playing Pac-12 quality teams. Against this team any and all substitutions look good.

  17. That was pathetic. Their dline is living in our backfield already, and our classic “Need 7 yards, throw it 2 yards and pray the WR can do the rest” offense doesn’t work. As usual.

And then we settle for three(which we somehow made). Gonna be a long, bad game.

  18. 86-62 win. Too many turnovers and the pick and roll defense wasn’t too good but I think they’ll improve in both areas. They got the win and it wasn’t really close in this one. I saw a lot of improvements in key areas. Nice to see. They got West Alabama on Monday night. Looking forward to that one.

      • Yup. I think they can win 10-11 games in the nonconference. Next Wednesday I am a little nervous about Hofstra. They’re really underrated. That’s a good squad. They’ll test the Beavers. I think we’ll learn a little bit more about the Beavers in that game.

  19. Went to the 1st half of the basketball game at Gill, then came home to watch the football game on TV.

Loved what I saw from Eric Moreland at Gill tonight. He needs to hit the weight room hard, and needs to put on 20-30 lbs of muscle. If Moreland does that, he can be a beast next year. But even as a beanpole he’s already a good rebounder and defender.

Challe Barton looked better than expected, too. He could be a good backup PG for Starks.

Roberto Nelson looks nervous out there — lacking confidence. Frequently looking over his shoulder at Coach Rob (either seeking approval after good plays, or waiting for the hook after bad ones…) The jump-pass turnovers are awful — those are high-school level mistakes that need to stop if Nelson expects to get lots of playing time this year.

More man-to-man defense, which is good to see. But the offense still looks stagnant for the most part — wish there was more movement, more hard cuts, less standing around on the perimeter.

    • I was struck by the standing around on offense, that’s not going to cut it against better teams. I know it’s early, but Nelson is a head scratcher. He continues to be a turnover machine, showing no real improvement in his decision making. Still no reason this team can’t get 10 wins in the non conference just with speed and athleticism and keep improving as they enter league play.
