10.Nov.2011 General Discussion/Cal Pre-game

There's nothing to say. I notice people are getting testy in the comment area. Looks like everyone needs a break.

To complain about Riley & co. would be beating a dead horse. Additionally, I don't think anyone cares about the Cal game, so I'm not going to waste our collective time. I feel bad for the beat writers who have to cover this game. Eek. Sometimes it pays not to get paid. If you do want to discuss the game feel free.

Oh, one thing: a frustrating part of this season is that I don't notice players improving with each game. If they were, I think this game versus Cal would be more exciting. Guys aren't getting worse, either. They're just…basically the same as in week 1. Very odd to play 9 games without clear improvement.

I'm more interested in the basketball game on Saturday…

Since I find bsketball about as entertaining as curling, I’ll bite.

This game looks like Utah part 2.

Crap QB,decent running game, legit defense. Winnable game if schemed properly. So that means they’ll come out and run the same old shit and get burned about the same.

    31-13 Cal.

I’m not sure what your saying. I purchase the larger Dish package to get Curling during the Olympics. I saw they actually sell out large arenas in Canada for Curling. To be honest I would much rather watch an intense Curling match than the Beavers ( Football ) right now. I went with my son a couple of years ago to watch OSU against Stanford. The most exiting Basketball game I have ever been to, including Blazers. I couldn’t hear for ten minutes after the game.

Hecker’s punting of late has been an improvement over the early season negative yards and other shank punts. Poyer has improved in all facets. The drive back to pdx after the game has improved. (Less fans on the road). That’s about all I can think of.

Hard to care other than to see how a few individuals respond and hopefully demonstrate leadership that will carry over to next year.

Riley’s won 10 of last 12 against Cal, 5 straight at Cal(?). This season is probably a good one for OSU’s dominance over Cal to take a break.

RE: “Utah Part 2:” Be funny if OSU stacks the box this time though….

I won’t be watching or listening. Probably check out the UW game though. CW will be too predictable to watch.

Example of how a coach takes responsibility and a local beat creates a real and objective story:
    http://www.azcentral.com/sports/asu/articles/2011/11/08/20111108arizona-state-football-coach-dennis-erickson-must-find-way-finish-job.html

    Two notes:
    1. I’m not promoting DE here. I’m just providing a relevant example of what our coach should do and how our beat writers should react.
    2. The feeling on Jahii Carson is indeed impending doom. The most current rumor is that he did poorly in his online class (ala Dominic Glover), so he retook one of the college entrance exams (ACT or SAT) in order to qualify on the NCAA sliding scale (core grades vs. exam scores). It’s rumored that he received his scores on Monday night, and they weren’t good enough to qualify. But there is no news to report because ASU is now appealing to the NCAA based on some other circumstance. I’m told the rumor coming out of ASU is that he was diagnosed (this week) with a learning disability, and that’s the factor on which ASU is basing the appeal.

It’s too bad. I would have liked to see him play this year. Who knows? The NCAA may qualify him based on appeal, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. It looks like he will need to go the same route Berto took, and he won’t be eligible until the NCAA clears him to participate in team activities (not games), then he shows academic progress at ASU for a full year after that.

Or the whole discussion last spring about baseball streams sparked someone to make a nice donation for all to enjoy.

    • JackBeav says:
      VA:F [1.9.22_1171]

      Hmmm…

      2009-10:
“We are thinking about finishing in the top half of the league, there are some real formidable goals and achievable goals here. There is the air of higher expectations; so you will see me more than last year trying to manage everyone’s expectations out there because they are a little higher than they should be. It is a different feel this year with our players.”

They finished tied for 5th in the league, which I would consider the top half.

      2010-11:
“I have been trying my best in the few interviews I’ve done up until now to emphasize that we have nine freshmen and sophomores. So while we have, what I would say, better skilled and better athletic players there are still nine freshmen and sophomores with four seniors. So there’s going to be a huge growing lag early on and I’m really relying on our upperclassmen to kind of show these guys the way.”

And to our frustration, he DID rely on those seniors.

      2011-12:
“I view this like parental expectations of kids going to college. You tell your kids from the time they start understanding that they can go to college that the work that is needed to get there still needs to be put in. They don’t automatically get to go to college. It’s the same thing with making the NCAA Tournament. Our goal is to get to the NCAA Tournament and I’ll stand by that from here on out. But we still have to put in the hard work that is needed to get there.

“I think, for the first time in my head coaching career, I have a first-team and a second-team that are almost identical. So if we can raise the tide of the entire program, that means depth and that means you can weather injuries, you can weather foul trouble, you can weather fatigue, you can weather a lot of things when you have 10 guys you can put in the game.”

Many people, myself included, always want more from our teams. And the players always want more themselves. If they didn’t, then I wouldn’t want them on the team to start the season. But what we all want and what is/was reality don’t always mesh. There was hope because the players now coming to OSU are exponentially better than previous players on a whole. But they’re not the one-n-done types who will carry a team on skill alone. And even those players need a supporting cast to go anywhere.

So if we take the time to listen to what our coach says rather than plug the hopes of the players into our expectations, then reality becomes more sane.

I’m excited because what the coach says is less removed from the players’ expectations this year.

I don’t listen to players anymore. I’ve heard enough from them in person and on the air waves to know better.

As for the coach, one example…CR told me once at a Beav huddle that he thought Omari Johnson was really going to take a step up. He said this year “we can compete with anyone in the Pac 12. “Compete” is a broad word but I’ll be pleasantly shocked if they make it above 7th place.

CR= pretty good recruiter. Coaching leaves much to be desired. I was a student during Ralph’s magical run and graduated in ’84 with the AC Green, Charlie Sitton team. God they were fun to watch.
All passing fast breaks and smart b-ball. Miller did not tolerate mistakes and they would lead to a seat on the bench after they got a finger in the chest and some in your face yelling. I can’t believe this proud program has went in the toilet for so long.

If OSU didn’t have a football team, I’d be hard-pressed to find any redeeming value in that sport, especially given the debilitating effect it’s having on players physically and mentally. And the constant comparison to war or battle is just stupid as stupid gets, not to mention insulting to anyone who has to hear that garbage. It’s a simple game.

But it still stops too often, and the athletes are too specialized for anyone who likes action to say they get it. Sure there are some amazing athletic efforts and plays every now and then. But most of it is just execution.

That’s one thing I have to give to Chip Kelly. At least he keeps the game moving. Maybe the NCAA should cut the play clock to :15 instead of the :40 (?) it’s at now.

        Now THAT would be exciting.

Not giving anybody a hard time about liking soccer, but the only reason it’s the world most popular sport is because it takes only a simple ball to play it. Hell, in Brazil the street kids wrap trash with rags and play soccer.

The more expensive the equipment required to play a sport the more exclusive it becomes.

I assume you realize that the reason most women watch football is because of the tight pants – really is fun to watch and they get after it. And basketball, the bare shoulder and arm muscles – not so much the legs, (pants are too baggy) – really is fun to watch and they get after it. But rugby is the real deal: tree trunk legs and very short shorts, – really is fun to watch and they get after it.

If you haven’t scoped the OS women’s soccer team for “attractiveness” then you probably should. You also might want to consider the genetic material.

BTW This afternoon, the OS women’s bb team scored 96 points against an inadequate Western Oregon team.

Yeah, I agree with most people on here that Soccer is not the most exciting sport because of the lack of scoring and all of the “almost” scoring opportunities, but this is a playoff game and features two local teams that represent the area well. U.P. always has future World Cup players on their team and has brought national championships to the area. Not many other sports can claim that. Also, this is an Oregon State team, so regardless of if you enjoy soccer or not, you are Beaver fans, right? Any success by any Beaver team is good for the school and is worthy of your support.

As some of you may have seen, I’ve been going back and forth on Twitter with Paul Buker, criticizing Buker (and the other beat writers) for failing to ask tough questions of Riley and Banker.

Buker has now asked to be sent, via email, some tough questions to ask at next Tuesday’s OSU football press conference. Buker says he will ask the questions more or less verbatim. I think he’s serious this time….

Guys — How about a group effort to create some really good, tough questions over the next few days? I have some in mind, but as a group we could probably come up with some REALLY fun ones….

A for fun list may be….well, fun. But I think this may be an opportunity we shouldn’t waste and Silver is a good candidate for organizing and phrasing serious questions.

An area I’d like to see explored is the performance of senior players, Remmers in particular. How does Riley account for his repeated penalties? And what is being done to correct his problems?

The lack of slant routes is another obvious question.

With the weak run blocking of the O line how does Riley not put in more two back sets and use two TE’s?

Why the very infrequent LB or Safety blitzes?

Just my 2 or 3 cents, thanks to Silver.

More possible questions: What keeps Riley/Langs from a little hurry up offense? Can’t two plays be occasionally called to avoid one huddle? When does (or will) Sean have the freedom to audible? Any chance he will be allowed to call some of his own plays?

Agreed. Family should never be a target.

I stopped over on PO the other day to see what they were up to, and they were in the midst of reveling in the pain of hurting children. And it royally pissed me off.

So leave family members out of it. And keep it all on the up and up. The coaches can deal with attacks on whatever you can imagine if they’re directed at them. That’s the nature of the job. But if you go after the innocents, it makes you the ass, the prick, the feeble-minded, dickless moron.

Wow. It’s funny how the line gets drawn with people. Sure, that joke wasn’t made in the best taste, but I thought that Buker won’t actually ask a tough question so I decided to make mock questions based on the inane chatter I’ve seen everyhwete about that subject. I don’t give a fuck about that.it I love that we now have a lame moral police to tell us all how a bunch of pissed off fans what they can and can’t make in jest.

I agree with you, the Penn State jokes are shitty. Weird…as I have such a limited moral code I wouldn’t have said that.

If I really wanted to be dickless I would key a car. But I am venting here.

Additionally the lifetime contract Riley has will always protect from being effected by said attack
            s. He is going to be just fine with all that money fans donated to a job he can choose to be mediocre at. And he will be laughing the whole time.

It would be interesting to get the REAL answer to that question, but we never will. Angry has already noted MR’s response to that question (asked by the media after the Utah debacle):

        *****
Coach Mike Riley said Sunday if he was laughing on the sidelines that it was because something ironic or ridiculously odd was happening. “There was nothing funny going on in that game,” Riley said.
        http://cliffkirkpatrick.mvourtown.com/2011/10/30/utah-fallout-2/
        *****

A hard-nosed reporter would have followed up — on the spot — and asked Riley exactly what was so ironic or ridiculously odd to make him yuk it up on the sidelines, for all the world to see, while the Beavs were falling apart on the field. Too late now for that, unfortunately…..

What would Banker feel about using a 3-4 defense since our 4-3 isn’t really working against the running game? Wouldn’t utilizing a 3-4 defense be able to utilize more speed on the edge and blitz a LB on every play? Basically, a LB could be used as a standing DT or DE.

Riley, why aren’t we utilizing the Wheel routes, TE dumps, and the WR inside screens more often? The wheel route seems to work nearly EVERY time, no?!

3-4 defense requires a huge fast nose tackle that will clog the middle and demand a double team. We don’t have that quality player, in fact they are pretty tough to find. Think 4-3 is better way to go but we need sound tackling, and creative blitzes to keep the other teams offensive line challenged on their blocking assignments. Banker has a challenge doing that partially because he has lost a bunch of experience due to injuries.

We’re talking the college game here. A 3-4 requires one space eater. An elite space-eater is hard to find, but one who can just direct traffic to the 3 and 5-techs is pretty easy.

And OSU has plenty of 5-techs.

I would like to know why Riley doesn’t believe in gamers. It’s pretty obvious that there are players in the game who are there because they’re practicers, because that’s what the coaches tell us in their annual “I hope we maybe some day find something resembling an identity” mantra. But some of them in no way have ever resembled gamers. How are we going to find out if we have any gamers if all our coach believes in is practicers?

These are very good questions, but I suspect MR would evade them with something like this: “We were doing great until James Rodgers went down against AZ last season, and then Quizz left early, and we’ve had a lot of injuries and bad breaks since then, and now we are a young team that is getting better each week, and on track to surprise some people next year….and these things go in cycles and the Beavs will be back….blah blah blah.” To get past this sort of happy talk, we probably need to pose very specific questions, and doggedly push for answers to these specific questions, one at a time….

That’s EXACTLY what my high school head football coach and co. thought when they played players and I wasn’t a true practice player, I was a gamer in high school. I played my ass off in games, but not so much in practice. Our team sucked balls due to the “play practice players and not realize who are gamers”.

I am a bit more interested in the OSU-Cal game than Angry because there have been some enjoyable contests between the two programs in recent history. Riley’s success against Cal has been one of the main things he could hang his hat on. Problem is I see the trend against Cal finally starting a reversal this Saturday. The game should have its entertaining moments and I don’t think OSU will look horrible but lack of progress like Angry mentions means this team will most likely not be able to put a complete game together. I see us staying too pass dependent. Until we garner a running game to complement the passing our odds of winning games will remain pretty low.

I was never a fan of his. I never understood how anyone could honestly think he was a good PG. 1 for 11 from the field? Yikes. UCLA has been overrated from the start. 17th ranking was a joke. They have good inside play with the Wear twins and Reeves Nelson but have no guard play to speak of at all. They can’t shoot from the outside. If you play zone on them they will struggle to score. Joshua Smith also is going to be an issue fro them. He is out of shape and doesn’t a whole lot out there.

The conference as a whole has not looked good. No different than the previous couple years. Cal and Stanford are the only teams in the conference who have looked good in their regular season games albeit against highly inferior competition.

    Time for Phil:

Final Cal home game at AT&T Park and a change of venue could be good for Bears as they’ve dropped 5 straight at home vs OSU including 4 straight ATS (all as a fav). In their trip to OSU last year Cal lost starting QB Riley in the 1Q to a season ending knee injury and was no match afterwards trailing 28-0 at halftime (Cal’s only score came with :20 left in the game). The Cal D dominated for a 2nd consecutive home game, this time vs WSU (has held L/2 home opponents to negative rush yards at the half) as they tossed a shutout for the 1st 3Q in the 30-7 win. While OSU ended up with a 25 pt loss LW vs Stanford, the game was much closer than the final as they actually had the ball in the 3Q trailing by just 4. OSU is 9-2 ATS as a conference away dog but it’s abundantly clear that this squad is young and in the process of a substantial rebuilding process.

For once, I’m going to have to disagree with Phil. I have absolutely no idea how it is that Riley has Tedford’s number… he just does.

Cal is great in the front seven, but they are uncharacteristically weak in the secondary. They will over-pursue, and they will play themselves ut of position.

And I think Riley works it all out to take at least this one.

Angry, you hit on something here that I think is very important for folks to realize. That fact is that you can only use the “young and inexperienced” excuse for so long. At some point, these players have to show they are learning something and getting better. I’m seeing no change. That is a scary prospect for next year. I will just shake my head and laugh when folks will be optimistic about next season because of all the experience our freshmen got. So what! Who the hell cares! Experience is useless if you don’t actually show you can learn something from them and get better!
