  1. The thing about Burton that frustrates me is when he plays within himself he plays so well, then he has stretches where he thinks he’s much better than he really is and hurts the team.

  2. OSU had a big lead but it sounds like Burton has pissed that away almost all by himself. At least that’s what it sounds like.

    • Burton has turned it over, blown some defensive assignments and has thrown up some wild shots. He’s made some great decisions and great passes. Typical Burton game. He’s had great stretches and really bad stretches.

      • Thanks. Listening to the Stanford broadcast just to see what the enemy has to say. They’re not nearly as professional as the Cal guys but not real bad.

The thing I find interesting about both the Cal and the ‘furd broadcasts is they have an announcer and an analyst. The analyst gives insight as to what’s happening. More information being passed along vs the OSU broadcast where it’s just a guy calling the game.

        • The play by play is important when on the radio because the one thing I love about Mike Parker is that he catches you up if you’ve been away from the action every 5-20 minutes depending upon the sport. To me as a fan, I want to be painted a picture as if I was there at the game! Not a tv analyst on a radio broadcast. If you listen to Jerry Allen and company, they are more tv analysts than play by play. Mike Parker is play by play….there’s a big difference!

  3. Anyone know why we have so many more fouls than Stan? We had like 11 or 12 in the first half and have two already. The tree has like 5 all game…

  4. Collier’s offensive foul is a big play in the game. He had Jared Cunningham open on the fast break for a lay-up and made the selfish decision to just run a Stanford player down for an offensive foul. That’s the difference between having the lead and not having the lead like they do now.

  5. Our shooting percentage was nearly 60% at the half, now we are down to 50%. We are essentially missing every key shot down the stretch.

  6. Beavers inability to grab a rebound hurting them. So many times tonight they’ve had the ball in their hands but just couldn’t control it. Got to hold onto the ball.

  7. Well, I will be really happy if we win this game but we definitely don’t deserve it. I am already revising my expectations. We are not an NCAA team, they just don’t have the focus/effort.

  8. Starks eating every possession; fine when we run a pick-and-roll, terrible when he jacks up a jumper.

If Jared can’t dribble or shoot because of his fingers, he shouldn’t be in on offense. Roberto should just be in the game anyway though. Bad subs.

  9. It’s frustrating that Roberto has not been getting the ball or been in the game much. He’s the best shooter and has made a lot of good plays.

  10. BEAUTIFUL substitutions by CR, btw. Puts Burton and Roberto in on offense, and we score. Puts Moreland and Collier in on D and we get a steal. Nice work.

  11. SNEAKY inbound play just crushed us there. As have their several offensive rebounds combined with no-calls on loose ball situations.

As I type, Joe misses the first FT because he sucks. Badly.

  12. That is 2 OTs and regulation where we missed FTs in the last minute that would win the game. Only Jared has hit his consistently.

  13. BTW, that inbound play is ALL on CR; he left Burton in on defense, and they threw it right over his head. Bad sub after several good ones.

  14. If Jared is going to run the O, Starks should be out for Roberto; Nelson is a much better set shooter. And Starks is cold from the field; I don’t remember his last jumper.

    This game is ridiculous.

      • 1. Maybe Roberto should Play with both shoes off
        2. Not sure I understand an offensive scheme where we screw around with the ball at the top of the key for 27 seconds than try some wild iso drive into a crowd hoping a shot will fall or we put marginal ft shooters on the line.

  15. Now Starks wants to be the hero, jacking up a 3. Please, God, sub his ass out.

I know you love your Chicago street-ballers, Craig, but Starks is killing us right now.

    • The team is tired. When you’re exhausted you make a lot of mistakes. Beavers have been having a lot of full court pressure on Stanford, causing more wear on their legs than Stanford’s to this point.

    • FOUR Cardinal around Collier as he shot, and no foul? What a fucking joke.

But Collier should have just hit that tip-in too. We seriously, seriously do not deserve this game after the 7 plays we choked on, all of which would have just won.

  16. Enough drinking the CR Koolaid. This team plays bad D and can’t rebound. If people are content with winning the CBI then CR is your man past that we need a new football and basketball coach. I have seen enough of this crap.

    • So many offensive rebounds given up. Beavers up 3 with the ball under a minute left and they end up with a deep forced 3. That is where the Beaver offense falls apart.

  17. Missing clutch free throws and the missed lay-in were the reason they lost. It was a loss that the Beavers couldn’t afford to lose.

  18. That loss disgusts me.

    1. Brandt misses 3 of 4 FTs to end regulation.
    2. Moreland gives them the ball at the end of regulation, and is 1/100th of a second from us losing the game.
    3. Burton with the inbound pass to the corner at the end of 1OT that results in a turnover.
    4. Joe misses first of two FTs at the end of 1OT or 2OT.
    5. Up 3 with about 10 seconds left, we allow a fast break-wide open 3 to tie the game.
    6. A few more chokes I forgot about.

And that isn’t even counting the numerous terrible plays by Starks, where he’d rush jumpers or dribble the ball off his feet.

We didn’t deserve this win, and I’m glad we didn’t get it. And now we’re 1-3 in-conference. Nice work.

    • I wouldn’t even say it was that. Just guys weren’t holding onto the rebound. Moreland had to have had at least 10 rebounds squirt out of his hands right into a Cardinal player’s hands. They were in the right position for the rebound but let it get away from them.

  19. Starks killed us on both ends of the floor. Roberto needs more minutes. Put Cunningham at the point Roberto at the 2 guard and sit Starks. Let starks come off the bench. And Burton should play half as much as he does.

  20. And the Beavs become only the 3rd Pac team to lose a home game and fall into a tie for 10th, with a team that’s already beat them. I see a lot that portends to success next year, this just isn’t the year. Too many holes that have previously been pointed out, and Angus was flat out exposed on D tonight. He’s been shaky for awhile, but tonight was frustrating to watch.

    • Angus would be so much better if he blocked some shots. He’s 6’11” but can’t block a shot. He just puts his arms straight up in the air and guys shoot over him. Can’t believe he literally can’t block a shot.

        • Completely different scenarios. He doesn’t understand how to properly play post defense. He gets pushed underneath the basket so far that putting his arms straight up in the air is useless. If he understood proper post defense sticking his hands straight up in the air would be okay. He has strength, but let’s guys get post position way too deep.

          • It could be a coaching issue but other big guys for the Beavers don’t seem to have the same issue. I find it hard to believe that they’re helping everyone else. Not sure what is up with Angus. He needs to play better.

          • You’re reaching now. I’ve seen Collier and Moreland really improve their post defense this season, Brandt is another story. At some point the players deserve blame. The coach can’t be expected to do every single thing for them. Sure Craig makes mistakes, but I think he’s a good coach. The players just flat out need to play better.

          • I agree… Brandt shows flashes on D. He is never going to be a Moreland but I think he can play better. He is just missing that nasty streak. He needs a Shaftanar at UTEP moment.

  21. A number of years ago I gave up on watching pro football, basketball and baseball.

Based on the way OSU is playing and the way Bobby D is managing the athletic department I’m beginning to think about walking away from college ball too.

I don’t miss watching pro ball and if I decide to walk I won’t miss this shit either.

  22. The Beavs played hard , they came up a little short but the effort is not a problem. I’m concerned that Starks wants to be the hero and doesn’t play team basketball. I do not understand how CR does not play Roberto Nelson he’s our best offensive threat next to Jared.

  23. I thought that after football the worst was over. Giving up a huge lead at home and now having to go back on the road is a recipe for another stinking season!

    • I think they’ll split the Arizona games and come home and face the LA schools are mediocre this year. IMO, they’ll have a chance to be 4-4 in conference play then before heading to Eugene. Craig will have to make some adjustments. One will be to play Roberto more and let him handle the ball more. I wouldn’t say bench Starks just let him play off the ball. He’s better IMO when he plays off the ball. Let Jared and Roberto be the primary ball handlers. I think this would help limit stagnation on offense and let’s Stark have better looks. Roberto needs a lot more playing time, he showed why tonight.

    • They have to get some road wins soon or it’s NIT or even worse CBI time again. I hate that four games into league play they are already behind the eight ball with five of their next seven games on the road.

  24. Was at the game tonight. Face it. OSU basketball is painful basketball to watch. It looks closer to a haphazard style city league team then it does to a team that has been playing together for 2 or 3 years in any kind of structured, disciplined system that uses any kind of fundamentals. It’s a mess.

  25. The Brandt D hate is amusing.

Yes, he does give up position down low sometimes. All posts do.

He also fronted during all the OTs VERY well; the posts scored about twice on him in 4 OTs.

He was also great in help D; he blocked several shots, altered others, and took several charges.

Brandt is not our problem. Starks playing street ball is one, Jared having a joke of a jumper is another, and Burton playing more than 15 a game is a third.

    • Brandt’s defense in the OT’s was outstanding. I’m ok with Jared taking open jumpers, those are shots he needs to take to open up his drives.

Starks jacking shots off the dribble with two men on him is a big problem. I like Starks as a catch and shoot guy but not falling away sideways from 22 feet.

    • I agree with you. Although, I think the pick and roll or pick and pop that they keep trying to run at the top of the key is poorly executed at times. I don’t know if that’s Brandt’s fault or the guards? Brandt actually needs to shot more for that play to be effective. He needs to have the mindset that he is going to stick that jumper and make the defense pay when they follow the penetrator.

Starks got a couple of layups, but in my opinion it is an ineffective strategy because of his size and it leads to turnovers or him throwing up wild shots as much as it does good looks for him. Starks is much more effective in the open court. I really don’t know why CR went ultra-conservative in OT and with choosing that, he needed another shooter in the game. The rest of the team was clearly standing around with the two man game.

  26. Was at a party and DVR’d the game…………………with 30 min extra. Just got to the end of first OT when the recording ended. What a pisser to loose this one. Thoughts.

The man to man D is pretty bad. Steals and blocked shots do not equate to great D. Slow rotations and switches lead to way too many easy looks and uncontested drives.

The rebounding is awful. It sure seemed like Stanford got a lot of their points on offensive rebounds. They need to learn to box out. Rebounding is about effort and Stanford had more.

Our guys seem to be weaker than our Pac 12 opponents. We should have has several more three points plays if our guys could finish stronger around the hoop. Moreland is the prime example.

Team does not have the killer instinct. When we got up by 15, the game should have been over. Let then back in with poor shoot selection and bad perimeter D. A lot of mental errors.

Starks plays out of control and that killed us tonight. Jacking up shots too early and really playing a playground style. One beef with CR is that he does not give players some pine time as a punishment for playing stupidly. No consequences mean it will continue to happen. Why did Starks and not Cunningham have the ball in his hands at the end of the game?

We gave away this one and it’s a killer. With the poor overall rating of the Pac-12, the dream of the NCAA’s pretty much went out the window. Two weeks ago I was fantasizing about crushing the Ducks and a berth in the big dance. Not so much anymore. Now I get to go watch my other school get blown away at home by Purdue and hear the highest paid employee in the state of MN, Tubby Smith, make excuses and throw his players under the bus. Would be nice to still have Devoe Joseph(punk!) and Justin Cobbs plating here instead of the Beavs rivals. Thank god for beer across the street from the Barn.

    • “at the end of the game” – I thought Roberto took the last shot? I could only listen to part of the game on KPAM, but I thought Mike Parker called it well (although since I couldn’t see it – how would I really know? He commented over and over about the lack of rebounding.

I can’t help but wonder if the team chemistry we heard so much about is fraying a little. Burton’s goofy passes and Starks’s dribbles off himself to go out of bounds.

  27. Roberto Nelson quote from an article this morning: “It’s kind of a reality check for us,” Nelson said. “It’s good for us because we’re not that type of team, we’re not a 1-3 type of team. I think it’s actually the opposite. So we can use this as motivation going into the next games.” http://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/basketball/osu-men-s-basketball-stanford-leaves-corvallis-with–ot/article_2550516a-39cb-11e1-8759-001871e3ce6c.html

Bill Parcell’s quote in response: You are what your record says you are.

  28. I thought I’d pass along a couple of things the Stanford announcers were talking about during the game. To me it seems their comments complement the well written report by Beavergopher.

When a Stanford player went to shoot there were at times 3 Beavers trying for a block resulting all too often in either a foul or other Stanford players being left unguarded which among other things contributed to Stanford getting offensive rebounds and put backs. Their feeling was the OSU man guarding the player trying to get off a shot should be the only one trying to block the shot.

The Beavers were trying too hard to get steals resulting in needless fouls or ending up out of position and thus giving the Stanford player some uncontested room for driving, shooting, etc..

    FWIW ———————–
I’d also like to add that I think OSU needs to consider adding an analyst to the OSU basketball broadcasts. Parker does not have time or ability to call the game and to think about what’s going on and give the listening audience an analysis of what is happening. I was especially impressed with the information flow I got from listening to the Cal announcing crew.

In all the years I’ve been listening to OSU basketball broadcasts I’ve never heard Parker give information like what I’ve described above. Maybe it’s because he’s afraid he’d come across as second guessing the coach or the players.

  29. From ESPN – 2012 wide receiver Zack Robinson (Tahlequah, Okla./Sequoyah) has committed to Oregon State. He also had offers from Memphis and Mississippi State.

    • Others say he has not committed and that he wants to take visit first, the verbal comes from his coach. Not a done deal yet. He probably wants to do it on his own terms, as he very well should.
