Beavs lost in Seattle 95-80. Beavs lost in Corvallis 75-72.

So, figure on a neutral court the Huskies should have a 9 point advantage or so. Not an exact science, obviously, but a starting point. It basically shows the Beavers will have to play a relatively flawless game to win. Confidence and other factors are at play. The Beavers were feeling great after dismantling Utah and Colorado, but the Cougars brought them back down to earth a little. Not sure they learned anything from today's game or were battle tested. They played apprehensive down the stretch and looked relieved (almost shocked) to have won it. The Beavs don't usually respond well when they're humbled.

If the Beavers dismantled the Cougs and were firing on all cylinders I'd love their chances versus Washington. That didn't happen, though. Now they have to wake up early tomorrow and face a well-rested #1 seed. I foresee a sluggish start that only gets worse. It really depends how much they want it. Today I saw a team get by on confidence, but they were humbled, and now that confidence is on fumes. It'll take leadership, determination, heart, etc. I haven't see these traits all year, and Washington isn't a team they can out-athlete.

Washington 79, Beavers 68

  1. Wroten eats Starks alive. We could benefit from putting a bigger guard on him like Berto. I’m kindof hoping for a 3 guard line up for much of the game with collier/morelan and Burton/Brandt filling the other 2 spots and rotating in and out for rest consistently. Cunningham needs to obviously get back on track. I’m afraid missed free throws and fould trouble will be our biggest obstacles in the next game.

      • I don’t like how Cunningham picks up cheap fouls when he gambles on defense. I could totally see him picking up 2 early fouls with a major defensive assignment like Wroten. We will need his offense in the next game and can’t afford to have him sitting.

  2. They didn’t roll over today when everyone expected them to after the start…I had the score close for todays game but not the team.

I’ll say 83-76 Washington—Huskies come out slow, Beavs keep it mid – range 5-8 most the way, but can’t close the last 4.

      • Results are slow to come in tonight, some precincts are still discussing hanging chads-oops, wrong forum!

ESPN is apparently still simulating the game as we type…

  3. This game (Wazzu) was one they should be proud of. The Beavs were ready to finesse the win, and they were great as long as Wazzu was laying off in a zone. Then Wazzu went all gorilla ball and altered the game. They took a punch but steadied themselves before the half. And Coach Rob made great adjustments to lock the game down according to how Harris and Hicks were calling the game.

That was a REALLY physical game on the blocks. Collier and Burton were literally getting shoved for standing still, running, sliding, jumping or shooting. And only the worst of it was called when they were shooting. Burton started taking flops to draw attention to it, and it worked. Those two took Wazzu out of the game. And they broke them with Moreland’s help, which was a surprise because Moreland (like Angus) isn’t strong enough to play that physical a game.

There was just a lot of beating going on. And I didn’t like that Bone’s offense was constantly throwing knees on moving picks or reading our offense then running into the cut lanes. Looking at it again, that Cunningham flagrant should have been a foul on Motum. When both players are moving like that, the offense has the right of way. But that’s how Bone schemes against us. He knows Pac officials will let it go all game.

  4. I’m gonna go out on a limb, Beavers win 75-73. Beavers start fast, have control of the game, withstand a late Huskies rally and pull off the upset. Cunningham goes for 25, Collier for 16 and Nelson and Starks each put in 12.

  5. What’s Larry Scott going to do about sub-dismal attendance at the Stapler for Pac-12 tournament? Empty seats always makes it look like they printed the incorrect date and time on the ticket stubs.

    • I hope the tournament starts getting moved around. There’s plenty of good arenas on the west coast to play in, no reason to play at Staples where nobody shows up. Rose Garden, Oracle Arena(Oakland) are two that come to mind.

    • The game was at noon on a Wednesday. People work. I’m sure the crowd would look like that no matter where the game was played, especially if the two teams playing aren’t from the region. I’m sure there will be more people in the stands for the Friday and Saturday games.

  6. This is the third game between the two teams, again. That was the word for the Wazzu game….its very hard to beat a team three times in a row.

So we got that going for us. All it needs is for a couple guys to go off on UW. Cunningham needs to show folks HE should have been POY. Take over this next game and show em!

    • Burton and Collier have really been playing well as of late, Moreland is stepping up too. If Cunningham and Brandt step up, I think the Beavers will win. I expect for Cunningham to be really good. He rarely has two bad games in a row.

  7. There is a huge difference being “humbled” and still winning. That was a great finish for the Beavs. That is the thing they have been missing all year. They had a major scoring lull and slacked on D for the end of the first half. They made adjustments in the second half and got stops down the stretch. That is what it means when CR talks about learning “how” to win. The team stepped up, with Jared not shooting well and being taken out of the game.

Great win, now can we come out and follow it up?

  8. For entertainment purposes only:

    WA -4, over/under 153: WA/OV
    UCLA -2.5, o/u 129.5: AZ/UN
    CAL -4, o/u 132: Stanford/OV
    ORE -3.5 o/u 140: OR/OV

March used to be my favorite time of the year, in another lifetime…

    ESPN Projection: Wash 75-73

  9. My hope is that Gary Paton has decided to stay out of Cunningham’s ear for the last 24 hours. As much as I love everything that he’s doing for the team and JC, there’s a time and a place for such instruction. Right now, I think that he’s adding too much additional pressure and JC is losing his ability to concentrate and play with a sense of automaticity. This is the time of the season were if we’re going to win, it has to be because we’re building off of the previous win. It’s a completely different mindset.

    • I hate that take. First of all, what makes you think he’s in JC’s ear? Have they talked yes about getting together during the Summer for two months and working on his game to get him better and prepare for the NBA. Everything I have heard from the Glove as been spot on. JC needs to work on his dribbling, he needs to work on his aggressiveness, and he needs to improve his outside shot. THose are all true and the fact the Glove WANTS to help him and the program is instrumental in growing the program. For years we were asking how come GP wasn’t giving back and now he is and the last thing I would want to do is ask him to back off because he’s affecting the pyschy of the player who needs to desperately improve mentally and his basketball IQ. I don’t get the impression that his presence or his talks with the team and individuals has had any effect on their current play. Its not like this is the first time JC has struggled or disappeared. Having the Glove and AC Green is nothing but positive for the program and the coaching staff has no problem with it and has done a very good job in getting them back involved. These “pressure” situations are learning experiences for him and the program, the additional pressure comes with the territority not from who is watching the games.

      • The Root announcers were the ones making that claim. It looked like WS had a game plan to stop Jared from being the one to beat them. He was not shooting well and the lanes were not there for him to slash.

I think it was an easy way for MacLean to segway into talking about GP working with Cunningham this summer and then he started to believe it. One good reason to watch the games with the sound off.

The Beavs didn’t need Cunningham to score in bunches against the Cougs. The reality is their half court offense looked better than when the team stands around looking for Jared to do something.

        • I know the announcers were talking about it, and GP and Ironman were screaming at JC to drive to the basket and take over the game more, but he didn’t.

My point is that saying GP or Ironman don’t or shouldn’t be around the program because they are hurting the team or JC’s play is not accurate. Or saying that they should not talk to them after the game or before games, because they are “in his head” just think is wrong, that’s all. I don’t think their presence will or does effect his play. If it does then he needs to work on his head a little bit more. The things they were saying were spot on, and he should listen to them. But in the end they were just fans rooting for their school.

        • Remember also that Jared put Reggie Moore in jail for the second half. That was a great adjustment by Coach Rob. Jared’s primary focus was to not let them drive the lane like they did in the first half.

    • I think people need to forget about GP. MacLean is, for the most part, one who suffers from hyperbole more than most announcers. GP and AC were loud and courtside in a quiet arena. They pumped the refs, got in Wazzu’s head and shouted support for the Beavs like any fan would. MacLean was just focused on them because he needed to make up something to talk about.

Do we want the Glove and Iron Man on the sideline acting like fans of the program? Or would we rather have a current player for a bad NBA team throw a #go out there?

Better yet, would we rather have a roided NBA wash-out alum sitting on the sideline calling the game and making up shit about other teams’ alums?

Do we think Lamar would say something like that about the situation? Notice Calabrio didn’t do any follow-up on it.

  10. OSU has their work cut out for them but are plenty capable of the upset if they put it all together and show total purpose today. Cunningham has to play better and the entire team needs to be ready and try to start well. Defense will be key to keeping us in it and having a shot down the stretch. The NIT will notice if we pull out the ‘W’.

  11. From KJR (Mike Parker coming up next) the Homies say they are a little apprehensive about the game, however if they can be physical with JC they can get him to back down and not be aggressive. If it turns into a free-throw game then it could be close. Especially, if Coach Rob turns it into a herky-jerky game. But both say that it could be close early but Dawgs pull away and one picked a 12 point win the other 15 points. Both are a little worried that JC is “due” for a breakout game.

    • There’s another point. We have a lot of fouls to give on N’diaye. If we feel momentum going their way, invite the post feed and hack Aziz. It’s almost as good as a turnover.

  12. Does anyone have a stream for today’s game? Every time the ball bounces around on the rim in game tracker it makes me want to headbutt babies.

  13. And I forgot to post this a couple days ago. OT, but pretty bold. I especially like the non-denial denial at the end about research institutions in Oregon.

Too funny! I guess it depends on what the definition of “is” is. No?

    Here’s the original announcement.

  14. Larry Scott, “no official decision has been made to move the tourney from Staples. Vegas is a bidder and they have narrowed it down to a couple host cities. ” The board meets this weekend and that would be the earliest a decision could be made. The Tuesday press conference to announce Vegas as new host is inaccurate because the board has not meet. Why move from Staples? The success of tournament rest solely on the success of USC or Ucla doing well.

Seems like it has a strong possibility, just not official.

  15. I like the gameplan to take it inside and try drawing fouls. Need to shoot it with more authority though instead of laying it up.

  16. Why are we playing a zone against a good outside shooting team? Hasn’t the man-to-man worked pretty well the last few games?

    • Twofold:
      1. Starks on D
      2. They haven’t played yet, so Coach Rob is basically saving legs while daring them to draw us out of the zone. It’s working if we rotate well. But watch for more of those down screens to start giving them wide open looks.

  17. I hate watching Angus play. Admittedly, I haven’t paid too much attention to basketball this season, but I feel like the only time I ever notice that he exists is when he does something stupid.

  18. Starks can’t cover Wroten man2man. Beavs don’t know how to play with a lead. They look nervous and keep making the mistakes of a tight team that’s thinking too much. Still no Roberto and we’re 10 minutes in? Did I miss something? Is he injured?

  19. I really wish the OSU bigs would take the occasional hard foul when opponents penetrate. Way too many easy drives to the basket again.

  20. How soon till the Pac 12 refs realize they need Washington to make the NCAA tournament and decide to screw us over? This lead can’t last can it?

  21. Funny story on Howland suspending Josh Smith for the first half yesterday for missing the team bus to the arena.

Smith missed the bus, but he beat the bus to the arena… by walking across the street from the hotel.

  22. Isn’t this what we expected at the start of conference play? Now playing to their potential, let’s see if they can keep it up.

  23. Great first half. Mistakes will happen but they overcame. UW can erase this lead in minutes so I hope we keep the gameplan up. Those fouls drawn on UW will be huge in the 2nd half as they deal with foul trouble.

  24. WHAT?? Did I just hear the yayhoo say OSU is a top defensive team? When does blocked shots make a good defensive team?

    • Aren’t they actually last in FG percentage allowed? I would think that would be a pretty important metric to consider when talking about team defense.

  25. This is exactly why I said this team can win this tournament. The Beavers are beginning to click at the right time. AWESOME first half. Now, they need to close the deal in the second half and advance.

  26. I meant Beavs 79, Huskies 68
    ;)
Very impressive half, especially for a team that played yesterday. Jeez. Where did this come from?

    • Don’t get all excited yet. Gaddy is starting to drive, and Wilcox and Ross are second half demons.

Still, Collier and Burton are really playing well, especially on the defensive end.

And Moreland’s block on Ross’ dunk attempt was impressive.

  27. If Huskies are going to come back and win, it will be by creating turnovers, converting those turnovers into quick points on the other end, and — in their halfcourt offense — getting second chances with offensive rebounds. Seems clear that Huskies will not beat the Beavers today with pure outside shooting, especially as the second half proceeds. It gets harder and harder to hit those outside shots consistently as the clock winds down and the pressure (esp. being the #1 seed in the tournament) increases.

Turning this around, key for the Beavers on offense will be to stay aggressive while minimizing turnovers that could turn into quick, easy points for the Huskies. Starks, in particular, needs to keep being careful with the ball, and to stay under control. Meanwhile, on defense, keys for the Beavs will be to make the Huskies hit outside shots, and to hold the Huskies to one shot per possession by boxing out. Do that, and the Beavs will win.

  28. Duh Ernie!

UW’s front court is their weakness. That’s why they extend the pressure man on the perimeter. Keep the ball away from the bigs, and they don’t expose their weakness.

We need to go right after N’diaye and Gant.

  29. What is this spread court shit???? Come on CR just stick to your game plan! You’re sucking the momentum away and the Beavs never execute in these sets!

    • Surprisingly, that was Rastattter with the bad call. He also took the ball away from us on the other end when Wroten got it swatted away but hit the ball trying to save it. He thought he had the better angle than McRoy when McRoy was two feet from the play?

      I love refs sometimes.

      I also love my DVR.

  30. Beavers are getting every single call go against them now. Pac-12 officials at work. Knew they would try and bail out the Huskies.

  31. What a BS charge on Cunningham. Good thing it was time for a TV time out. This one’s starting to slip through the fingers.

  32. Incredible outside shooting by UW, this type of stuff only happens vs Beaver teams. I’ve seen this cript too often before. Despite their unbelievable shooting, to be within a basket is ok. They’ll cool off eventually….right?..

  33. Another charge with the defender inside the half circle? What’s the point of having that rule if its not enforced?

  34. Horrible officiating and most of it has favored UW. Allowed them to get going and they built momentum and now they got it rolling. I hate officials so much. Had a feeling this might happen. Beavers have got to find a way to try and get some stops.

  35. Wroten is going left every darn time, and OSU keeps playing him straight up. C’mon — make Wroten go to his right. It’s not rocket science!

        • I don’t mind who the Beavers play. Beavers can beat both of them, hopefully they aren’t too gassed tomorrow night, if they have enough left I think they will be in the championship game. UCLA’s offense isn’t too good and the Beavers can score at will in the paint against UA. Hopefully they have the energy to get it done for a 3rd straight day. Beavers in the championship would be amazing. Who wants a UO-OSU championship game?!

      • I don’t disagree that I’m rooting for Zona, but didn’t we beat UCLA? I thought we matched up fairly well in that game.

    • Mixed bag.

UCLA is effectively at home and they’ve been playing pretty well lately…but we beat them at their place.

Arizona is probably a little better team, but they beat us in overtime in our only game.

Ulitmately, I don’t think it matters. We were combined 0-4 against the Washington schools and we won the only two that mattered in the tourney.

  36. Awesome, gutty comeback, just the second time they have won when trailing at the 5 minute mark! The free throws were killing me though, thank god they missed more. Great win!
    Go Beavs

  37. seeing future stars Wroten and Cunningham clank free throws down the stretch shows just how much pressure affects these guys. I was really impressed with Wroten in this game though, the guy played amazing and he’s only a frosh.

  38. I think you got to give Rob a lot of credit too. I have been a critic of his but he coached a great game. The 2-3 worked well… we pretty much had to play it. He managed the game well down the stretch and fouling at the end was smart too.

  39. I am elated, went crazy watching the end of the game- go beavs!

Granted, I didn’t catch the first half- however, forgive me for venting some frustration:
    1) our team looked down/unexcited. they didn’t high five or yell or do much with exuberance. they don’t talk much after plays, their expressions are somber
    2) I could read in their faces that they knew they were outmatched and outalented- its fine if that is in fact the reality, but it can NEVER, EVER show in your face.
    3) there is no nasty (not dirty, just physical plays with no fear, showing physicality). I mean specifically that when wroten goes left to the basket for the fourth time in 2 minutes, where is the person to FOUL him and send his ass to the floor. didn’t see it. I have to see that out of my teams or something feels terribly wrong.

The beavs hyped me up in general, even my criticisms. looking forward to tomorrow…
