I purposely didn’t watch the Civil Worthless. Did yard work for my parents all day. Would like to hear an AngryBeavs-style explanation on what happened. Not an Oregonian one, or a Polyanna one. Any comments? Assume more of Riley/Banker…”expecting different result using same plan”…

One thing that worries me is the QB play and makes me wonder if the kids could/should be getting better coaching.

It seemed like the LB play improved with the arrival of Bray. Would there be a similar improvement with a new QB coach?

Imo if Dr. Ray really cares about OSU athletics he has to make a move and the only one that the Beavs can afford financially is to replace BDC.

Personally I’d like to see Dr. Ray bring in a replacement that would insist on improvements in the coaching staffs. Someone who would force Riley to replace some of his assistants. Someone who would tell Riley that Langsdork, Banker and Reed are gone and if you (Riley) don’t like it you can quit.

        -Revived track program
        -New basketball facility
        -Expanded football stadium
-Reviving mens and womens basketball programs
And oh by the way, the football team has a more-than-good shot at going 10-3

So we got blown out by the Ducks. So what, you wanna know how many PAC-12 teams have been blown out by UO under Chip Kelly? Everyone but Utah, and that’s only because they haven’t played the Ducks since joining the PAC.

Look, OSU athletics are fine. You want them to be where UO athletics are? Ask Phil Knight for more money.

What makes me so mad is that Coach Rob was a terrific Xs and Os coach in his first year, taking a shit team with no PAC-10 caliber players and making them competitive in conference play. Then all of the sudden he gets a few good recruits and athletes and just says “Fuck it, let’s run.” Look at Georgetown, a team with high level athletes that still runs a very disciplined Princeton offense. I’ve seen Coach Rob run a disciplined Princeton offense with terrible players so I don’t understand why he can’t do it now.

I guarandamntee that we will have at least 20 against KU and due to having fewer possessions will get run out of the building. And don’t even get me started on rebounding. MSU had 17 offensive rebounds today. 17!!!!

I didn’t get to see this game due to family stuff. What happened?

Looking at the stats, it looks like it was a game of experiments. Burton was going to be the biggest player on the floor, so his production against Montana State doesn’t really surprise me. But did Angus’ absence mean we went away from the inside game? Olaf was certainly given a green light to get up to speed as fast as possible.

And all the second chance points and offensive rebounds given up says to me we played in too much zone… which I guess is fine since they look like they’re not a good shooting team. But when you have that kind of size advantage you just beat them down with solid man D and keep your own boards clean. Was there too much zone?

They shot a lot outside and got the long rebound; happens all the time to bigger teams.

Olaf played really well; his defense was very disciplined and he has long arms.

Olaf obviously is very green and still learning the college game, but his size and confidence will be a big asset for this team with Brandt gone. He didn’t hesitate at all on the 3-ball. Didn’t get to see him shoot from anywhere else, but it was nice to see a guy who doesn’t hesitate on the shot (as Brandt often does). 3-8 isn’t great, but it isn’t horrible either, considering your veteran pt guard shooter was 2-9 from downtown. Hopefully his rebounding improves with playing time.

Also, Olaf had something like 3 blocks, which is great for a guy getting his first significant time on the court. He found himself out of position a few times, but that’s to be expected of a freshman with limited time practicing with the team. He also had a great assist from 3 pt land to Moreland for an easy dunk.

Sounds like Olaf impressed? I like that he doesn’t hesitate. That means he’s confident in his shot and will come around to being deadly eventually. Even when Roe decided he would take a trey, you could pack a lunch and go have a picnic before he released the damn thing. And I’ve seen Berto take his time on his release in past years as well. He’s also shedding that but suffering in accuracy. Hopefully he comes around as well.

I like the news that Olaf can play D too. Did Coach Rob find a diamond in the rough because of circumstances? Why wasn’t Olaf recruited by anyone before he finally signed? I’ve only heard talk that he thought he might go pro until the last second. But you would think coaches in the US would still be in his ear about his options stateside.

He was a late find. Supposedly Roland ran into Doug Stewart in Europe and told him about Olaf and the coaches liked what they saw so they offered. Once he gets some experience, I do think he will be very very good. I miss Angus for his leadership and rebounding, but Olaf I think will be better. Love the fact the Angus and Olaf will be playing together next year though if all goes well with Brandt’s knee.

I hope that Nelson finds himself soon because if he doesn’t, he will be sitting. Joe would be good if he could stay under control and quit dribbling and making careless passes. What I think Nelson should be doing is taking the higher percentage shots and becoming more aggressive by going to the hoop in order to build confidence. Why isn’t Collier starting? Both him and Moreland will have good years if they keep working at it. If CR wants to do this team favors he needs to drop the 1-3-1 altogether and go man-to-man because I felt a few victories were left on the table last year by not doing so.

Olaf was actually spotting up and looking for his shot. He was open even more that the eight shots, but Starks decided to drive into the lane a few times and take wild shots or turn it over instead of dishing like a point should. CR even commented on Starks making decisions he hasn’t made since he was a freshmen.

Didn’t hear CR yesterday, but I noticed that too. Is the guy afraid of getting drilled as he’s going to the hoop. I’m sorry but I’m starting to see shades of Calvin Haynes unless Craig steps in and gets Starks to settle down and be a point guard, not a hot dog. That’s leadership and Starks needs to understand that he’s out there for the team not himself.

              • Jack says:
                VA:F [1.9.22_1171]
                Rating: 0 (from 0 votes)

This is interesting. Remember that Angus was a big part of the team not only in interior presence. He also had floor leadership qualities that will be missed. So Starks was probably told he would have to pick up some of that slack, and he took that to mean he had to call his own number more often.

I hope adjustments are made immediately to alter the offense to include Omar the way you all saw him play on Sunday. He’s not Angus, and he brings more and less in different situations. In the end, just getting him on the floor may be a blessing. The old experience canard that kept Calvin, Lathen and Omari on the floor well past their utility can’t keep players like LMW and Reid on the bench. Upperclassmen need to progress or get out of the way.

So Olaf brings a different style than Angus. And Starks isn’t used to him yet. They’ve had limited practices, and now they have tape. It sounds like Omar has much better spacing than Angus ever did. He does have better feet and hands, so court awareness also makes sense. If the perimeter players adapt and recognize quickly, then Omar could be a game-changer this year. We’ll still miss Angus’ physical presence inside, But Omar uses different tools to give us about 80% of that

One thing to look for is how Omar and Challe play together. They come from a similar style and could complement each other nicely. The tendencies of their roots will show in times of stress. Ahmad is a play-maker, and Challe is a facilitator who can make plays. There’s value in both, but they need to learn to do both at the right times.

I’d worry about his dedication to academics, but he would make a good rebound relationship on the football side.

They’re going through the whole “analysis and offer” system. So I don’t think there’s going to be any clear cut favorite right now. They have to keep an eye on a timetable for recruiting, so I think a hire comes sooner rather than later. But that kind of says that they’re looking at people who could work within the area while they’re in transition… if anything. i think Cal should have their pick given their facilities, location and potential. But their fans seem to be selling them short on any possible coaching hires.

There are the usual mid-major rumors. There’s McIntyre at SJSU, Andersen at USU, Dykes at ULL and Doeren at NIU. There are the soon to be mid-majors of Jones at Cincy and Strong at Louisville. And there are the NFL types like Roman at SF, Hue Jackson and Ron Rivera.

There’s not much talk about college assistants except for maybe Diaco from ND. I’m surprised Smart from Bama isn’t mentioned, unless they all think he’s just SEC material. And i would take a flier on someone like Josh Heupel… except that his familial political leanings might keep him from becoming anything remotely West Coast.

Of those rumored, I think Roman and Strong are the best fits. But Strong is tied to Louisville until they play their bowl game. You know how it goes with colleges allowing their coach to talk to other schools. If he accepts any other job, he would likely be asked to leave. Will he entertain other jobs before he fulfills his commitment to his kids? Roman is in town. He can take the job, set up his infrastructure and hire assistants, and he can spend a little time recruiting while he retains his job at SF throughout the play-offs. It’s been done before at that level. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work in this situation.

But if I was Cal, I would wait for a bit and look at another coach who was undone by his choice of QB. I would make Andy Reid an offer to make Cal a destination job.

          Petersen’s not going anywhere.

I don’t see Bellotti making another run in the Pac. Until this year he was the highest paid employee of the State of Oregon, and his pension is a pretty neat deal. He has no motivation to become a coach right now.

If the Belotti came back to Oregon, would he have to pay back his severance? You know, from when he quit and took another job at ESPN, but still got paid by the UofO because of that unwritten stipulation in his contract that said he would get paid for quitting? Oh yeah, that’s right, no need to worry about that money since it all came from donors…..

Helfrich is reportedly on Purdue’s list, with Butch Jones, Dykes, and Doeren.

It would be an early Christmas for me if Lamedork were hired away. As for basketball, does anyone think that only two days of real practice time led to the so-so performance yesterday? I may be in the minority, but I am really sick of these White House visits. CR was hired to coach basketball, so his focus better be there this year because the CBI won’t cut it for me!!

I think the White House visits are pretty cool, and they don’t hurt recruiting. Usually they’ve been paired with a game in the D.C. area.

I really have to think Duck fans are this stupid.

Of course the two can’t be mutually exclusive. Humans aren’t capable of compartmentalizing thought. Humans are just stupid beings.

For the record, I don’t hate the Ducks. I think they’re cheaters, I think they have a damn good football team, and I want them to lose at every turn since they are my natural rivals. But those thoughts must be melded to form some pretense of hate. So I must yield to their fans’ general stupidity… er… wisdom.

Pac-12 award winners as voted by coaches.
Was a little surprised to see Jordan Jenkins get a 1st team nod. Not that I know if he was deserving or not, but I barely even noticed him out there, which I guess is a good thing on special teams.

OT- Poor ass Nicholls State plays the Ducks in Autzen next year for the season opener? Also, why the hell do the Quackers get Colorado for three years in a row? Their schedule looks pretty damn easy next year unless Stanford is good again and Mora brings UCLA up another notch.

CU, UU and the Zonies are all 3/4 scheduling for the NW schools because of the Cali scheduling. So we’ll probably get CU for the next six years while switching off on USC and UCLA every two years.

“Luck O’ The Beavs”…they will end up getting Colorado after some hotshot coach has turned around the Buffs in two years.
