  1. My keys to the game are this:

    1. Communicate. Especially on transition defense. Oregon likes to get out and run and OSU needs to do a much better job of communicating and stopping the transition from creating major problems.

    2. This would be a perfect time to run a full court press. I don’t think CR will do it but I have a hunch that with a freshman backcourt Oregon would be susceptible to turnovers. Expect the1-3-1 tonight though and hope it works, but don’t let the Ducks spread the floor or it could be a long night.

    3. All roads lead through the big men. The Beavs need to take advantage of the big three: Collier, Burton, and Moreland. When OSU runs the backcourt passes and cuts and gets these guys involved, it is a thing of beauty. Nelson does a great job of seeing the floor and getting the ball to the open man. If the Beavs can drive and kick and really make the Ducks work hard, it could be fun night at Gill.

    4. Crash the boards. Be prepared to have Kazemi play even though he was still having concussion problems as of Thursday. This guy is a rebounding machine. OSU needs to make every effort on blocking out like their lives depend on it.

    5. Get the crowd into it. When you play well, the crowd will follow. The team needs to come out with a fire like they did against Kansas and really make a statement that there is another team in Oregon besides the Ducks that can play ball. This is on CR. He needs to get these guys mentally prepared to play like their lives depended on it.

This is just a fan’s opinion and not the thoughts of anyone who thinks they know more than CR. I expect a battle, but give the edge to the good guys based on experience. Time for the team to step up to the plate and deliver what everyone has been waiting for for a long, long time.

    • Well said-there is opportunity at hand. My hope is for an active crowd…I sure got spoiled going to OSU from 80-82.

I will be looking for a link…can’t believe this is on Root instead of THE PAC 12 network. Bend cable pulled Root six days ago

      Go Beavs

      • Yes you did. I, on the other hand, went to school during the Jay John era from 03-08, but have a lot of old tapes of the Miller teams that have kept me in awe of what OSU b-ball was like. CR is changing the culture and I like him, but unlike Miller, he doesn’t have as much experience, but is further along than I anticipated, especially with an AD that seems indifferent to basketball. People tend to forget that the Blume and Radford teams also took their lumps early on and that RM didn’t get his first 20 win season until 10 years into his tenure. There were people who were calling for his head and nowadays he may have been fired. I like Robinson because he really does care about the program, plus he’s kept BDC to his word with the practice facility. If anyone needs to go it’s Bob for his stupid extensions on John and Lavonda’s contracts. Both Scott Rueck and CR deserve better than this clown as an AD.

  2. I promise – this is about basketball. I watched some clips of last night’s Utah-Arizona men’s bb game. The Utes game with Oregon State is a month away but I predict Larry Krystkowiak will coach circles, squares, hexagons and all manner of geometric figures around CR – not saying Utah will win – only that CR will be taken to school.

    • He’s a good coach and seems like a good guy, but it is a month away and hopefully we’ll know more about this team. I agree Jason about Kansas playing down to the level of competition, but I have to give credit to OSU because they came to play and if it weren’t for unfinished baskets and FT, I think OSU is11-2. The Beavs have talent, but it all comes down to confidence, preparation, and execution and so far this has been very inconsistent. I have faith in this team and will be there tonight to do my part to cheer them on, but they have to make it happen and go out and play extremely hard and well to win.

  3. @KevinMcShane0: Don’t steal, wash your hands, make your bed, the Ducks suck
    #CivilWar @OregonStateMBB @OSU_11_Joe @EricMoreland15 @astarks3 @smoothdev44

    Got to love Kevin mcshane.

  4. If we lose today Robinson is coming short of promises. Eric Moreland and Collier need to both have big games and play with attitude. Moreland seems like he could have so much more potential if he could fine tune his offensive play and start realizing he has a little bit of Durant in him.

    • It’s not Moreland that’s the problem, in fact, him and Devon and Roberto have been the most consistent. Of course, you should always go for continuous improvement, but the one that needs to improve is Starks. If he can come out like he did last game and make his shots, they will be okay. All of them need to play strong defense and block out on rebounds. Altman’s teams are known for making teams take ill advised shots and only allow about 29% shooting from 3 pt territory. I think it’s going to be close, so the Beavs need to pound the inside and then eventually once Oregon starts to panic and try to protect the inside they can shoot from the outside. Starks is the floor general and needs to make things happen and not worry about jacking it up all the time. Take the high percentage shots. Should this go down to the wire, Altman is very very good at winning close games and that is where Oregon has the biggest advantage. Don’t get the Ducks down, only to let them back in it. Step on the gas and make them pay!

      • It’s not even that Starks was missing shots, he just wasn’t looking for his offense. The team feeds off him and when he’s scoring, the whole team starts feeling it. He needs to come out early looking to score. This is a game where Ahmad and Roberto need to have big games. As the backcourt goes, the team goes. I think the team needs about 38+ from them tonight. Olaf needs to hit a couple outside shots as well. That happens and the Beavers should win. Oregon’s offense isn’t that impressive and looked really bad at times against Nevada. Back the paint and make them consistently make long jumpers.

I expect a well played game on both sides, a win to start off conference play would be nice.

  5. It seems to me that CR has gathered enough pieces but just can’t put the puzzle together. The last 3 years I’ve been optimistic going into the season only to end up disappointed. Once Brandt went down I’ve lost interest again this year. I hope you’re all right and I’m wrong but based on attendance at Gill I’m certainly not in the minority.

  6. I’ve said forever I think CR can recruit I just don’t think he’s a good coach atleast not a good game coach. Advantage to the ucks because I think Altman can coach.

    • Thanks for the link.

FWIW – You can click on the picture (lower right hand corner) and expand it to full screen and it’s a reasonably good picture.

  7. Loving the energy so far. Beavers are rebounding well on defense, getting after it and are active. Good to see. Starks seems focused and hit a jump shot, I think he’s going to have a great game

    • Burton is good for a few good plays – usually during the first part of the game. He should then sit after his first bad pass or first screw-up shot attempt or any of the other impossible to define things he does.

    • Starks-Burton P&R, Oregon jumped the pick and doubled Starks, took away pass to Burton, forced a cross court pass to Moreland. He panicked looking at the time a bit and forced up a three. Just very good defense from Oregon on the final possession

  8. up six and not firing on all cylinders at the break…they have had open looks on 3’s, need to make a few and open up the inside for Collier/Burton.

  9. @Homefry – did you see my msg re being able to turn the 3″ picture into full screen? If not it can be done. And thanks again for the link to the stream.

  10. I’ve been away from commercial TV and commercials for awhile. Had forgotten just how bad the commercials are. Holy crap. No wonder Americans are stupid.

  11. I am glad to see the Beavs up by six with the opportunity to play much better. I thought Oregon looked like world beaters when I saw them on TV against UNLV earlier. I’m tired of Altman and all of his transfers and when the hell is Singler going to f-ing graduate? Seems like he’s been in the line up since 2004. Be a nice win for the Beavs.

What’s the latest on man-boob-visor-boy? Is he staying again? Good, I love those semi-tears he gets in his eyes when the Ducks lose. I hope it becomes a stream when the NCAA brings the hammer down or maybe Riley can pull a miracle and get Chipster all misty eyed before 2019.

    Go Beavs!

  12. Same ol offense we always run, rat ball, penetrate and dish and hope someone gets hot. Would love to see us run a set play, where we get a good look, just once.

  13. jesus get olaf out of there. He cannot defend, rebound or make a basket to save his life. not seeing anything out of him so far that warrants him even garnering PT.

  14. looks like another coaching decision for UO (team) vs Coach R and OS (1 on 5 offense) need an upgrade in both fb and bx to get to another level

  15. and its another banner fucking day to be a beaver fan. this is so much bullshit that we are stuck with this douchebag who can’t coach because of who his bro in law is

  16. 4 of us sitting here watching this and we all said at halftime that Altman would make better adjustments and we would lose by double figures.

    • Doesn’t matter. I’m not wasting another two hours. Hopefully the baseball team will give us something to cheer about. It’s not as far off as you think.

    • Unless BO can come out on some recruiting visits I think that is kind of worthless- maybe offer some staff positions upon graduation. ha

    • well, WSU and Washington are not very good either. Possibly USC and ASU as well. Should get one against Utah as well. Cal and Stanford look average at best. But we won’t beat UCLA, Arizona or Oregon.

      • I don’t know about the other teams you cite but I would not be surprised to see the Utes defeat the Beavs. On the other hand, it’s only Krystkowiak’s 2nd year taking over a terrible team in a new conference and we all know there are endless excuses as to why it takes a great many years to turn around a basketball program.

  17. About as expected. The Ducks are not even close to being a good team, but the Beavs are so bad a lot of teams are going to look good.

  18. Dear CR,

Eat shit. You suck the sweat of a dead man’s balls.

    Signed,

One pissed off beaver fan that you can’t get us back to the NCAA tourney after 6 fucking years.

  19. If we could just get rid of Bobby D, OSU Athletics might have a chance to become interesting. No sense of purpose in this department. 6 wins is fine and dandy in football and an occassional CBI will keep you employed through 2 presidential terms. Despite his worsening health it is our fate and destiny to all have to suffer like aging geriatrics as the program goes nowhere. Poorly run is a major understatement. BDC, you had a nice run, now please step aside, for the good of Oregon State and focus on what’s most important for you and your family. We need a breath of fresh air at OSU, and we’ve already needed it for way too long.

    • If tonight was any indication, CR may have a hard time getting 6 or 7 wins in league play to get the coveted CBI bid. Beavs have always struggled against Wazzu, Utah looks improved already under Krystkowiak. Where are 7 wins coming from? USC?

It’s going to be interesting if this thing falls apart in league play, but it doesn’t really matter. He’s not going anywhere and he has the “Angus Alibi” 2013/14 will be the year of accountability.

      • and that’s absolute fucking horseshit. All of the Jay John players have cycled through and are gone. These are HIS players now. There are no more excuses in my book. If it isn’t getting turned around and done now, it isn’t going to ever. Ship his bald ass back to Chicago and he can take Langsdork and dickhead decareless with him. I’m done spending any more of my money on this subpar product.

  20. Fire Craig. Somehow him letting Olaf shoot 5 threes and go 0-7 is like #343 on my list of complaints from this game. Waste of 2 hours.

      • Seems like every Beaver hoopster is a head case at one point or another in the CR era.. Olaf has a nice looking shot, but all of a sudden it can’t make one anymore. I think he’s 2-20 in his last four or five games, not sure I blame CR for that one, but I just wish a Beaver basketball team would have one hard nose, clutch player some year that the other teams and their fans love to hate.

          • that is what Olaf does is shoot. If he is not making them he shouldn’t be in the game. If he is in the game he has to shoot the open looks or else he is not helping space the floor.

  21. did anyone else also notice Burton’s pass (or was it a shot) that went off the side of the backboard? Second time I have seen him do that in the last 3 or 4 games.

    • In this game, the shot clock was expiring so he just threw up the ball – he wasn’t trying to make a play but then one never knows.

      • I think it was desperation, but he did that one other time in another game, so who knows. He always makes one or two old school hook shots a game and that’s all the stupid announcers remember. They don’t remember the missed free throw or the ill-timed pass on the baseline or the fact that defenses leave him alone 15 feet from the basket and pack it in on Moreland and Collier.

    • there is a lot not to like about Burton but I can’t blame him for hoisting a crummy shot against the clock… that is a coaching failure and not on Joe.

      • corey williams.

But really every announcer ever loves “old school” “kareem esque” “bull dozing” “wes unseld passing” “throwback” joe burton

4 more god awful turnovers for joe tonight.

        • I don’t get all the love for Burton. He had a good game against Texas Pan American but he outweighed whoever defended him by 100 pounds. I for one will be glad he is gone after this season. We already have enough players who are good at turning the ball over.

  22. I read this board just in case I’ve had too much fun for the day and instantly want to drop into a sports depression. Thanks Riley, Robinson, Ray, DeCarolis, and every rumor that never comes true.

  23. hey CR, heres a thought, put Collier & Moreland down on the block and not 15 feet from the hoop, and run an actual play of outside in to get them the ball within 5 feet of the hoop! My god, we ran better plays in grade school, with a teammates over weight, dim-witted dad as “coach”

  24. Has it occurred to anyone else that watching a televised OSU game is like going to a coaching clinic? That is my impression of the last three televised games that I have watched; Civil War; Kelly vs. Riley, Alamo Bowl Brown vs. Riley and last night’s debacle Altman vs. Robinson.

In all three cases, the winning coaches adapted their strategies to the situation while the OSU coaches stubbornly stuck to the original game plan. You can see and feel the opportunity to win slipping away.

Looks like another near miss for the basketball team. I’m already making plans for CBI madness, last year was magic. Until we lost….to Washington State. JB

  25. Ugh………the biggest problem I see is that clearly there are shooters and non-shooters on this team. Nelson, Starks and Collier are the only guys who have any kind of offensive game. When only two of them are out there at a time, it’s clear to the other team that they only need to worry about the others.

Here’s what they need to do in order to even to look competant in games going forward.

Moreland – develop some kind of jump shot. No one is going to block it.
Nelson – get to the rim more often. The up and under is your best move.
Collier – Get the ball more. Clearly the best player on the team. Defenders seem to give more room when he faces up since he’s a threat to drive.
Barton – Take a freakin shot! You’re no good if teams know all you’ll do is pass and then get out of the way.
Reid – work on a jump shot.
Starks – Got to use your screens better and ask those guys to set better screens. Come off them real hard. It’ll open up better looks.
Burton – Looked like a real bball player when he backed down woods and got an easy 5ft hook. Do that more and everything else less.
Schaftenaar – Not much to say but keep shooting. Most of the looks he gets are good one. I’m hoping he’ll find a comfort zone and they’ll start dropping.

Coach rob – If the beavs are going to have some kind of shot in games, Burton can only play for 5 min at a time and only in the low block. Just use that big body and close the distance to the rim and go for the hook shot. That’s all he’s got. He’s a huge liablity on D too slow and doesn’t seem to want to challenge any drive to the rim.

If CR insists on using a point forward, use Collier instead now. He’s a decent enough passer and if nothing is there, he can take it to the rim and get put pressure on the other team.

    • “Burton – Looked like a real bball player when he backed down woods and got an easy 5ft hook. Do that more and everything else less.”

NO!!!!! More often than not when he does this he gets too far down on the baseline, gets trapped, turnover.

  26. Another painful game to watch. I tell myself to not overreact to one game- if the the team could make an open jumper and we don’t get a number of bogus calls the beavs could have pulled this one off and that the season is not yet lost. But honestly, they look terrible. Starks doesn’t have a filter on shot selection (Calvin Haynes syndrome), Shaftenaar despite some height has no inside game, can’t board and his only purpose to shoot the three which he has been bricking on consistant basis, Collier shows an occasional flash but only when he is motivated (generally only when he is pissed). Joe is Joe – inconsistent. Moreland is a great defender and rebounder, but still has no game on offense. Roberto is a step slow. Barton is useless. Less rat ball offense would help, but I can’t help but feel CR still has a talent gap- his fault of course. If he had some quick guards that could shoot the cuts and the offense potentially could be effective.

    • yeah… I agree that the talent of this team is overstated. Then again you have to go back to coaching when the best player on the team doesn’t even start a lot of the time.

  27. Well yesterday was a tough day to be a Beaver.
Ducks get Kelly back as coach and then their BB team pulls out a win at Gill.
Going to the game yesterday, I had a good feeling that we would play like we did against Kansas and win going away with the large and noisy crowd.
Yes, for a Sunday night, the crowd was really into it for the first half. The players get so much support from the fans and yet seem to lose focus at too many times.
The worst part of the loss is that it came at home and puts us in a very tough position to make the NCAA without at least 6 road wins. As posted above, it looks like it could be another CBI year. At least we will probably get 1 or 2 home games and tickets are cheap and easy to get.

    • dude the ncaa ship sailed a loooooong time ago. Like 20 years ago if I’m being honest but once we lost to Towson it was gone for good. Would need to win something like 13-14 games in pac+tourney to make it, Craig’s never even had a winning record in conf, doubt he goes 13-4 the rest of the way.

Had we beat Bama we could afford bad losses.

      • Bama is 8-5 at this point in the season and not ranked. From what I saw of that game they aren’t world beaters either. They are a middle of the pack SEC team at best.

  28. Maybe Riley could become the BBALL coach with his conservative play calling and Robinson could mover over to FBALL with his fast and out of control style.

    • Yeah, huge get. Kearsley too, but he won’t announce until Jan 23rd. (Oddly, his official is on the 25th – if he doesn’t commit, that’d be really strange visit, so I’m feeling very confident about that one.)

Games are won in the trenches and we’ve gotten a pretty good boost the last couple years. I’d love to see more on the defensive side too.

  29. Deja vu all over again….

Chip Kelly is rumored to be leaving, but comes back.
Now Brian Bennett is rumored to be requesting transfer. How long till he comes back crying again?

  30. The uw game was the dagger in my heart, maybe cause I knew we needed to win that game, maybe cause I knew we would lose to the ducks subconsciously. The husky rivalry is starting to feel a bit like the civil war. Both sets of fans are d-bags.

Time for a new thread Angry, recruiting or something.

Anyone know how to get super cheap airfare?

        • Trip was great. Fans were great. Seats in end zone weren’t as bad as I thought they were gonna be. New year’s eve partying down town was great. Great all around. Just great!
Weather was cloudy and rainy but warmer so we could still get away with long sleeves with no coat, except late night then it got down to the low 40’s.

          • PTB, San Antonio was great. Probably second best to NO for hosting events like this because the Riverwalk concentrates all the fans into a small area. Talked to many awesome OSU and Texas fans.
Had the best brisket I have ever had courtesy of some UTSA folks tailgating in Longhorn regalia.
If I did it again I would have purchased tickets through the school to be in the concentrated Beaver section. The three Longhorn fans I sat next to were great. Fun to talk to and at the end of the game they told me they had no business winning the game. They spent the first three quarters shaking their heads or burying them in their hands. MR screwed the pooch in the 4th. They were saying that the downturn of that program was triggered when Mack Brown reneged on his promise to retire after after the ’09 Nat Champ game and hand the keys to Muschamp. I had forgotten all about that. Sounds like Brown will be gone next year unless they have a really great season. The natives are restless.

Went to the Gopher Bowl game the previous night. Houston is big and ugly. Urban sprawl at it’s worse with no redeeming natural beauty. Bowl game and fans get lost in the sprawl of the huge metro area.Goundhog Day for me with both schools pulling defeat from the jaws of victory in the last minute of the respective games. Texas Tech was the dirtiest team I have ever seen. One of their players got thrown out for punching one of the MN players and their were three others that I saw that were not called. They were supposedly upset that they lost a fake rodeo competition to the Yankees from the upper midwest. I’m not making this up. T-Tech fans were pretty low rent. Threw tortillas on the field throughout the game and gave a standing O to the player who got kicked out for punching. They also were throwing stuff at the U of M band. Sorry,a generalization.

            Other thoughts:
Football in domes sucks. It is meant to be played under a sky.
Both rodent teams were playing against opponents playing virtual home games, which with the noise in enclosed stadiums can be pretty difficult.
Texas’ marching band was awesome. T-Tech’s sucked.
Walked out of the Alamodome pissed off at the result and the young drunk UT fans chanting “Beavers suck and PAC-12 sucks.” Met JTB and wife and had a bitching session while drinking heavily. All good.

      • Really, you must not read a majority of posts from your partner Gopher or many others on this site. Trashing other fan bases is welcomed and appreciated plus it makes us feel superior, and who doesn’t need that.

      • Thank you from 85% of the posters on this site. I’m guessing you live in a bubble and have never had to deal with duck or husky fans. Try going to either stadium for a game. The worst opposing fan experience in the PAC-12 I have seen. Fresno State is right up there if not worst.

        • You get what you give baby.
Been to Husky stadium for Beaver games 4 times, treated generously each time. The last 2 times I was invited to a tailgate party where they wouldn’t even accept donations for the food and copious alcohol. I’ve had similar experiences in Eugene, Provo (sans alcohol), San Diego, San Antonio, Boise, Vegas, and Madison. For every wild fan who has gotten in my face there have been hundreds of others who apologize for their residents a-holes and make every attempt to make our visit a positive one.
Funny how mature adults have generally good experiences where ever they go.
But maybe you’re right, maybe I live in my own bubble of happiness and gratitude and sharing of good times with fellow football fans.

          • So you are assuming I’m immature because I have had bad experiences at other venues? That’s bullshit! ” For every wild fan who has gotten in my face there have been hundreds of others who apologize for their residents a-holes and make every attempt to make our visit a positive one.” I have had the opposite experience. I have been invited to fancy tailgaters that look like tour buses with free booze and cigars. That doesn’t mean that a specific fan base can’t be more arrogant than others or tend to harass more.

But since your are a world traveler and all “Eugene, Provo (sans alcohol), San Diego, San Antonio, Boise, Vegas, and Madison.” I should just be quiet and drop back into my immature state of mind.

Or maybe, you go to games were we haven’t won and the fans feel sorry for you. 2007 Civil War we won we were treated like shit, 2009 Civil War, treated like shit until they won, then fans wanted to be nice and offer us booze and food.

I do commend you for always throwing out invites to your tailgater at the fairgrounds. Not everyone is like you…

          • I don’t see all in final 5 as tough. ASU and Oregon on the road obviously will be tough games and Stanford will be tough, but USC will be worse and depth will be in worse shape, Washington will be really mediocre again. Beavers got a good shot at starting 9-0 with a big win against Stanford, then there will be a lot of excitement and Riley will blow the ASU game and ruin a potential year like no other at OSU. My expectations are 9-3/10-2.

          • I agree. They should Wash/USC pretty well. So 3/5 are tough games. That being said, starting the Season ranked 20-25 going 9-0 to start… Would be pretty fun. Going in to Autzen 4-6 in the country…

  31. Two Friday games, USC and Oregon. One home and one away. At least the Oregon game is after Thanksgiving so I can have a nice holiday.

    • Only complaint would be the short weeks prep for both USC and Oregon, on balance this sched sets up nicely what with the spacing of the two bye weeks……a pretty neat deal for sure!

  32. Sounds like we lost a visitor for this weekend.

    Greg Biggins ?@GregBiggins

SoCal LB and #UCLA commit Cameron Judge was supposed to visit #OregonState this weekend but had to cancel due to schedule conflict
