Let’s use this thread to track developments.

Just saw that OL coach T.J. Woods and defensive line coach Chad Kauha’aha’a are coming to Corvallis. Early on I heard Aranda was coming, then that cooled off, now we’re hearing Wisconsin is trying to retain him.

Heard that due to bowl games, it might be a while before news is official.

This site has some good info.

  1. Aranda has interest from Texas Tech apparently too. I’m sure part of this is him playing these teams off each other in order to maximize his pay day.

  2. Yep. Aranda appears to be a considerable improvement over Banker. I’d be ok with OSU going as high as 700K for him. Andersen needs to get him signed on to the new staff as his first major test. Then all should be in fine shape heading into what looks to be a real Orange vs Black Spring Game that fans want to see to begin our new era under Andersen.

    • I still like the idea of hiring Matt Wells as O coordinator. This spring game will be an important one in vetting the roster for the new coaches.

        • What about Utah State’s current OC/QB coach? I assume it’s gotta be a bigger name than that though since Andersen wanted more money for coordinators.

Will be interesting to see what happens.

Really hope it’s not Ludwig. Guy seems to have had poor reviews with every team he’s been OC for.

          • I hope it’s not Ludwig either. But that wasn’t originally what I was responding to. Matt Wells is not gonna leave his head coaching job at USU to become an offensive coordinator somewhere. He can use his current success at USU to parlay himself into a power 5 conference head coaching job somewhere else. Now Baldwin on the other hand? I think that’s 50/50 but if I were a betting man (which I’m not) I’d say he stays the course at EWU and tries to turn his success there into a D1 head coaching job somewhere. GA isn’t stupid. I’m sure he’s got a list of several viable OC candidates to run whatever system he plans to implement.

          • I dont think Matt Wells comes here either. But this poor guy is stuck with that handle in order to keep all the cred hes earned for calling it like it was and shiuld be.

    • ” Aranda appears to be a considerable improvement over Banker.”

      Ummm… okay?

A nuclear warhead appears to have more firepower than a thrown rock.

  3. I saw on Wisconsin’s employee posting site that they have an opening for DC or defensive coach that just opened. Maybe Aranda is moving here. Glad Brennan is coming back!

    • A dead period just means a coach can’t have in-person contact with a recruit, on or off campus. They can still communicate by phone, text or letter. In fact, colleges can still host recruits during a dead period, they just can’t have contact with the coaching staff.

    • I didn’t see much there.

I did love the Tinks idea of getting back to Portland. If only that was an idea I would have come up with several years ago… or always….

Riley was spent. He was lost in his own narrative. OSU’s bad rep was because of his excuses and everyone thinking he was the shizz and the nits. He never was. He was good for a while in a program he inherited from a coach who demanded commitment from the school, then never demanded anything from the school beyond his whining excuses.

Maybe he succeeds where it’s ready-made. Good for him. Buh-byeee!

And thank you for taking Banker and Read. I am forever indebted to you for that.

    • Some part of me thinks that the “good ol boys club” that Riley didn’t take with him to Lincoln is a little butthurt about it. Except for Garret. He probably couldn’t give two shits

      • I welcome both defections. There will be a new mentality on the D side, and TE’s are easy to find. None of our recruits are or will ever be Gates or Gronk.

        • Note how the “two stars” are holding on though. I’d rather have them with a chip on their shoulder than some glorified higher star kid with entitlement issues.

And I worry not one whit that Andersen can or can’t develop any of these kids. The cleaner the Riley recruit slate becomes, the more opportunity there is for Andersen to bring in his kids.

This is why I don’t understand why anyone thought Rueck had a hard time. He had a completely clean slate. His first year was rough because there was nobody there. But that clean slate is an opportunity for HS kids. CR did not get that, and that’s probably why he got extended. That we even have hoops at OSU is a credit to the work CR did. Yes… JJ left the program in that bad a shape. I am not kidding.

          • I would say better.

Obama didn’t flush the big money interests that are the bread and butter of the GOP. That more than anything was the failure of idiot boy. That was the reason I never voted for CR’s BIL. CR flushed the old mentality of fraud and failure. He just couldn’t translate that energy to smart game play. And there was an old-school segment. There was a group who thought they walked uphill to and from school and told everyone so.

That group has changed their way of thinking.

They are now and have always been two completely separate things. Anyone who brings it up is a moron to the highest degree.

        • We need to keep that narrative.

You also don’t want your kid to be stuck in LA with all the pitfalls and temptations that are there. Oooh! Temptation! Religiosity says to minimize it.

Well, religion, big friggin’ DUH! A small college town with no temptation is a better place to learn a trade. The biggest news you could possibly make is that you drove a golf cart one drunk-thirty.

I would have been so toast in the new Cord Wood world that is Corvallis. I knew Wood through someone who is now in the CPD. He is as big a jerk as his “professional” record indicates.

          • I knew him growing up thru his brother who is now one of the biggest losers on the face of the earth. Drugs are bad mmmmkay. CW was a ginormous pussy who got picked on most of the time. Wonder why he became a cop? Wonder no more

    • Perhaps his attempted replacement?

David Hickox ?@904Preps_David 10m10 minutes ago
Sandalwood 2015 DB Jay Irvine has been offered by #OregonState. Will officially visit the #Beavers Jan. 16th. @Jay_underrated1

  4. Looks like Parker did an interview recently with Andersen in “The Lodge.” Something to watch for, could be interesting. I watched the one with Tinkle and it was refreshing to hear a coach that had vision and was direct and positive.

  5. Lots of Scott Frost to HC at Colorado State chatter out there. Doesn’t sound like it’s official but several people seem to think it’s happening.

  6. For those of you in Corvallis, and those who can stomach Buffalo Wild Wings….

Mike Parker ?@MEPOSU 2m2 minutes ago
Come meet Gary Andersen at BWW on NW 9th at 7:05, then more on “Oregon State? Dam Straight!” from Coach Tinkle. We hope to see you there.

    • 9th is the right place for a BWW.

I’m good friends with the BW3 (what it was once called) owner in Houston. The franchise stipulations are that four restaurants need to be open within so many years and within so many miles of a major population. They started at tOSU and branched out from there, if anyone cares. So if you see a tOSU banner in any of them, don’t be surprised.

I went there when wings were a dime each on Tuesdays… and the bartenders would just give me the “wrong orders” anyway. WHile I was there, wings went up to .15 each. I can only imagine they’re not what they used to be.

Do they still have NTN trivia? I used to be a regular champ on that.

      • Food is terrible in my opinion, and I like wings usually. They spend their budget on huge tv’s and flood the place with noise. Sortof like being in a Vegas sportsbook, without the gambling. It’s fine if you want to catch a game with a large group and have a few beers.

        • Sounds about the same, except for the food. Food is going to be dependent on staff regardless of franchise “recipes” and techniques. I love Popeye’s, but I went to the Popeye’s in Sugarland once… never again. It was the most lifeless piece of chicken… and the beans and rice were beyond sucking.

And trust me, I can open a can of beans and pour it on rice and it would be better than what they served.

Go a couple miles up the road to the South Main Popeye’s, and you end up with some really good food.

Maybe it has to do with what Spongebob always says.

          The secret ingredient is love.

    • Rome kept calling him “Tracy Anderson” so Gary beat the shit out him.

The Daily Telegraph? – Jun 2009
The personal trainer Tracy Anderson claims she can give any woman, whatever her size, the same ‘teeny-tiny’ bodies as her famous clients, Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna. Yes, says …

  7. I’m really taken with the new narrative our new coaches are so willing to accept. Don’t think we haven’t been a part of that. But also don’t think the Pollyannas get a pass for buying into the negatives that were always bullshit anyway.

I have been saying for years (you can look it up) that anyone who says OSU is tough to recruit to or is just a cow town or whatever is just an idiot who is just shitting on something very good in this world… and on every alum of OSU.

I know for a fact that excuses like this were made by the previous staff. And they never did anything to make it better. It was as if football was the revenue sport, and the school should just do these things.

    Entitlement.

What I hear is that many people would make something happen if they were just asked to do so… with a please thrown in.

    • BTW, Rueck and #15 WBB @ #6 UNC, 3 pm, correct? Rueck’s part of the improving narrative, good luck to them this afternoon.

BTW#2 – Tinkle maybe better assist OSU Marketing…”Oregon Straight? Dam Straight!” Is better than anything Marketing has come up with and could easily show up on fan’s signs at BB and even Football games when OSU is exceeding (other’s) expectations and meeting the coaches (and ours).

  8. Beav’s recruiting target becomes a land rodent.

    • It would be productive for Isaac – and the team – to come back and have a solid or “dominant” year before going pro. And he’ll benefit from some new coaching perspectives; both head coach and offensive line coach.

  9. Doug Gottlieb asks Andersen to do a little role play and says “I’m a quarterback from California, how are you going to sell me on Oregon State?” —Andersen’s response “First of all, how well do you run? If you are quick on your feet, then we can start talking”

    • Seems like a common theme in these interviews is the interviewer trying to call “bullshit” on Andersen’s reasons for leaving Wisconsin. they spend little time asking him about anything else and repeatedly ask him the same question. Then, Gottlieb sortof gives him a backhanded thank you by saying (paraphrasing) “well coach, best of luck and hopefully you’ve found a landing place you can stick around at and not have to move again across the country in a few years.”

      • It sounds more and more like OSU is a place where a coach can become a Joe Pa… and Riley was going to be that.

But he didn’t… and someone else feels like that might be a good thing.

I can’t argue with the logic.

I also can’t argue with the idea that Andersen can draw talent to OSU for the same reasons he thought it was a destination. It really is all that and a bag of chips. But don’t ask for salsa… unless you know where to go.

I’m a foodie, and I head to Corvallis for about six of my cravings. BBQ is a Cottage Grove thing. But that’s about it. What works in Corvallis is quality. If you don’t got it, you don’t got it.

My strip mall town and anything beyond an hour (Salem and Roseburg included) do not provide good eats.

  10. Here’s an audio link to the Gottlieb interview. I didn’t get to listen to the whole thing, but from what I could tell, it was just like the other 20 interviews Andersen has done this past week.

  11. Sounds like we’re going to land Kafentzis.
    Could be huge.

Sounds like Penniston, Estes, and Thomas could be coming over from Wisconsin, too.

    • Wow, that would be the motherload. Where did you hear this?

Also read that kid we offered earlier, Jay Irvine is as good as committed. Was going to commit today, but his dad talked him into waiting till after his visit (mid january) to be sure.

    • Kafentzis looks to be a better runner than a thrower. He’s got an awfully high number of interceptions. Arm looks ok not great. A redshirt year of increasing his arm strength would help.

      • It’s his feet and mechanics. He’s leaning back on most throws, and his feet are barely under him, He’s also throwing to wide open receivers, which is a system thing. If that’s what we get from our new system… I can’t complain. Who complains about their QB throwing the ball to wide open receivers?

  12. Penniston would be a huge get. As soon as GA left Wisconsin, lots of teams started contacting him… one was Ohio State.

Now add Kafentzis, Estes, and Thomas? That would be nuts.

  13. 37-25 Lady Beavs at half. They pull this one off they should vault into the top 10. Scott Rueck has done an amazing job with this program. Can they challenge Stanford for the Pac-12 title this year?

  14. Doug Ingels @dougingels · Dec 12
GA on recruiting: “We’re going to recruit who we want to recruit.” aka he’s going after Austin Kafentzis.

Wow, you’d Never hear Riley say this !!! Super excited to watch recruiting once again! Go GA

      • Hey! Don’t make a job sound so easy, especially for someone paid millions of dollars per year!

That poor man had it hard. He had to ride his bike to work because he could only afford one tank of gas per football season.

        Come on, man!

  15. off topic, but holy shit balls! Just saw a commercial for golfknickers.com. To quote Happy Gilmore, if I got caught wearing that stuff I’d have to kick my own ass. Hideous

  16. If an Oregon State dominates a #6 Tar Heel team on the road, does that vault Oregon State into a top 10 ranking? I’m not watching the game, but judging by the score, they’re just dominating UNC. Great to see how far this program has come in a short time.

  17. These commentators are slurping all over Carolina like the Lady Beavs aren’t playing stellar defense and running a solid offense. That elevator doors play off horns was beautiful, only if Jamie had hit that three

  18. The announcer is trying his best to keep people somewhat interested in the game. “they’re within 15 now!”. Said that a couple times. Women’s bball is definitely a second tier sport at UNC. They don’t even get to play in the same arena as the mens team.

Just watching a few minutes, I’d say Weisner is the best all around talent on the team.

    • “They don’t even get to play in the same arena as the mens team.”

They probably also have to do their own homework and take their own tests and write their own term papers. Life sucks for them.

  19. OT, but noticing on the ESPN gamecast, and over at the Pac-12 page, OSU uses only the new beaver logo graphic, it does not use “OSU” or any version of it.

    Look at bottom of page:

    http://pac-12.com/

Colorado and WSU integrate both a mascot graphic and acronym.

I suppose this “distinguishes” OSU because they’re the only ones that don’t include the university acronym, but do you think this is an effective way to market the athletic programs?

    • God can you imagine Riley running the clock in this situation? Ha!

“We didn’t get the play in before the shot clock expired. I was wondering when Weisner was going to call a timeout!”

  20. Not a surprise, but first I’d heard anything about Garrett one way or the other. I deleted the link since it’s from the Oregonian

Andrew Nemec ?@AndrewNemec 41s41 seconds ago
Oregon State offensive coordinator John Garrett will not be retained, according to #Beavers commits via @oregonian

  21. These women are for real. I honestly think they can get out of the entire regular season with two losses. What a statement win, double digits over a top ten team in their own arena? And Sydney only shot like 2-11 from three, but the Beavers still won handily. Y’all better take notice…

  22. Parker tweets, “Come meet Gary Andersen at BWW on NW 9th at 7:05, then more on “Oregon State? Dam Straight!” from Coach Tinkle. We hope to see you there.”

Good to see him on board with OS?…DS!!

  23. Awwww, cause UNC’s never ever celebrated a big road win in someone else’s building. Just like their baseball team. Poor losers

Hatchell said she would show her team footage of the Beavers celebrating after the victory. She said she was not accusing Oregon State of poor sportsmanship, but she emphasized that she wants her players to take pride in their home court.

    http://scores.espn.go.com/ncw/recap?gameId=400590421

    • I hate to be paranoid about things….but The Lady Beavs have a historic win and ESPN starts the article with the stats of the UNC players? Kind of weird.

    • I took a minute – Christmas is moving in fast – and looked at Hatchell’s post-game interview. The Beavs are nothing special, UNC just had a bad night. She was really bent out of shape about the celebration on “their floor.” I don’t get that. The player said Ruth Hamlin didn’t bother her shots, they just didn’t go in.

    • Again, Aranda will only be a coordinator for one, maybe two years. I would have loved his presence in the changeover I expect to happen on our D. But I think Kauha’aha’a is the most instrumental part of the equation. And we have the pieces in place in terms of talent. That was what dizzied me most a couple years ago when we were all hoping we would go 3-4 and Banker was talking about hums and umms and not having the bodies for it and all that BS. I was already on the “fire Banker” wagon at that time. But that was two extra nails in the stupid coffin.

If Kauha’aha’a brings the kid from SoCal and the kid from Samoa (to pair with Tago?) we already win.

And Max Tuerk, the cheap shot shit, will require one head with one swivel.

      • Agreed about Max Tuerk taking cheap shots at the knees of opposing players. But OSU is unlikely to get another chance at Tuerk, since Tuerk is a junior, and OSU doesn’t play USC (at least during the regular season) for the next two seasons.

    • Lots of Corvallis/OSU-bashing responses to the news that Andersen is attempting to hire away Sitake. Will make it all the sweeter if/when he accepts it; and it will help in the continuing process of changing the negative narrative.

      • Corvallis bashing from Utah Utes fans? They were screaming for Whittingham’s head after back to back 5-7 seasons and a loss to Colorado that kept them out of a bowl game. Seems nobody ever considers relationships with these moves.

If Sitake comes over, he may just want to work with Andersen again. I’m just not concerned about the defensive coaching that the players are going to get with GA at the helm. I’m more concerned about the offense and would like to see someone other than a journeyman like Ludwig.

  24. Apologies for mis-posting this but…’Basketball’ and ‘Athletics’ haven’t had a post for a couple days (posted there, too).

This is a look ahead to the Quinnipiac game at 10am on Sunday, I see that there is no TV listed.

Does anyone know if it will be shown anywhere and, if so, where? Maybe post a link.

    Tks

  25. Angry,

We need to have an Angry Beaver Nation twitter account. Or something that demonstrates the collective thoughts and efforts of our group. As I see it it’s been that collection of your posts, twitter messages from pissed off fans, and the “crack reporting” by a bunch of our “amateur scouts and reporters” (Jack, Silver, et al) that have made the difference in changing the narrative. I’d be happy to work on it for you (basically by finding links and insights people bring here) as I pretty much follow everything myself. If you’re interested I’ll email you.

  26. Andersen XM radio synopsis.

1st question: why Corvallis? Answer: long familiarity with program and like the university’s “vision”; admitted being closer to home was a factor, but a minor

2nd. question on recruiting challenge at Wisconsin: admitted it was an issue there but Corvallis is “a true college town” [which is getting to be his mantra]

Arute: Corvallis’s intimacy will grow on you. How to grow the program? “recruit the right kids; you get parents here on a weekend and the place will sell itself” wants to get to know the players; has met 30 or 40 or them, starting the trust-building process.

hasn’t seen Riley’s bicycle (in response to Arute) [proving the caricature that had become]

scrambling to fill coaching positions; relying on GA’s to fill the gap temporarily on recruiting.

patient; not going to panic to fill staff; find the coaches that care for the kids and are great coaches.

    plans to hold team accountable.

resources? a big part of the interview. improvements to start soon, not 4-5 years away and “hope and pray that it will happen” but OSU “has everything we need now”

Arute downside: being hounded by Neuheisel (in jest)

[lucid, adroit, interview; came out that Andersen has Great Danes as pets.]

    • Great messages on Corvallis from Andersen and glad to hear there’s some willingness to be patient on hiring assistants. I think the guy can afford to because of his winning reputation and also because some of his hiring targets might be prepping to coach in bowl games.

      Thanks for the synopsis.

    • I bet Andersen can’t wait until the “why the hell did you leave Wisconsin” questions die down……there are only so many ways you can avoid saying that “Alvarez was an asshole”.

  27. more Wisconsin staff likely coming over besides Woods and Kauha’aha’a according to Conner:

At this point, multiple reports indicate that Andersen plans to bring offensive line coach T.J. Woods, defensive line coach Chad Kauha’aha’a, strength and conditioning coach Evan Simon, director of recruiting Vince Guinta and director of football operations Jason Thomas with him to Corvallis.

        • Except for this: “….(Joe Seumalo) is credited with developing some of the school’s best ever linemen. Rivals.com rated Seumalo as one of the top recruiters in the Pac-12 Conference in February of 2013.” Don’t forget Crichton and Paea. Also victor butler and slade norris.

          • Crichton – recruited by Banker
            Paea – recruited by Seumalo
Norris – Uhhh, OSU 2004-09. Seumalo didn’t arrive until 2006.
Butler – See above, same answer

So you’re 1 for 4. Yeah he’s an awesome recruiter. Give me a fucking break.

          • Being voted one of top recruiters in the pac-12 by Rivals is a lot more reliable than the terribly wrong and uninformed blanket statement of: “he WAS NOT a good recruiter. At all.” With norris and butler he helped develop the talent. But i’m glad you took the time to look those up

          • I don’t give one rats ass what his rivals says. Just like Riley’s peers say he’s an excellent coach. The proof is in the pudding. Name some pac-12 first team talent he recruited. We weren’t talking about developing talent. Recruit better players and they need less developing. Yeah rivals is a legitimate source for his recruiting prowess. lmao

          • I think most people will take Rivals.com, a site built around recruiting, over an opinion by someone with the handle: whiskey soaked napkins. Just calling out BS when I see it, he was a good recruiter and developer of talent. No need to argue further

          • LOL … most people are usually wrong.

Dont forget that the media (like Rivals) and “most people” kept labelling Riley as an excellent coach, long after he stopped displaying any such talent. Talking heads.

          • I think I understand. I’m basing my opinion off who he’s actually recruited and you are basing yours off of someone else’s opinion. Loud and clear. baa baa baa. You probably thought Riley was a great coach too because that’s what you were told.

          • notice he balked when I asked him to name some of the “quality talent” Seumalo recruited? Paea. that’s the only one we are aware of.

          • He recently recruited the top prospect in the state of Hawaii. He also brought in peko who is supposed to be top talent. And delva, who was probably one of the better players on the line this year. Someone named victor bolden? I think he might end up having a decent career? Justin strong? He may just find himself a nfl career. Oh and paea, one of top players this last decade. Sure he’s not the best recruiter ever, but saying he’s not good, at all, is pretty crazy. I know you won’t admit it so there’s not much point going further than this. He’s gone always and he did good while at OSU, recruited well and developed well. Hopefully the new d-line coach is even better

          • Bolden was recruited by him AND Brennan. Ok, I’ll give him half credit. Peko? Seriously? I doubt he stays academically eligible to ever play a down for OSU since he hasn’t in two years. Same goes for strong. He was recruited Banker and Seumalo. Delva? Ok, decent stats. Where exactly was he on the all Pac-12 team? First? Second? honorable mention? Thought so. You can believe rivals all you wish. That’s fine. But I seem to recall D line issues. Most years. Something about not having enough depth. Been hearing that for years. Who’s fault is that? I won’t argue that he’s a good coach. But his recruiting and most of our former staff sucked at it.

          • Ya know what, hell I’m game for this. I’ll shut up for now. You keep track of how Seumalo does recruiting at UNLV. Where he’s much closer to the talent pools of Arizona, So Cal and Texas. If he does a good good recruiting some talent there, I’ll admit he’s a good recruiter…………….your move

          • I agree with you that he is not necessarily a strong recruiter. I was just refuting the point that ” he is not a good recruiter at all.” I think my examples refuted that. You made good points that he is not a a “great” recruiter. The d line has generally been one of the more consistent areas in beaver football the last decade, and I think seumalo did a good job both recruiting and developing.

          • Well… This is absolutely pointless and going no where. Looks like we’ll have to agree to disagree. There are far more important things than football let along the semantics between a defensive line coach being not good at all and decent at recruiting

          • Since Rivals wasn’t enough for you to rank him as one of the top pac-12 recruiters, how bout ESPN? Jeremy Crabtree ranked him as number 4 in the Pac-12. http://www.wearesc.com/forums/forum/trojan-news-across-the-net/132809-espn-pac-12-s-top-recruiters

I personally think that is too high. As you have pointed out, he isn’t great. But he was still good. To be a “not good. at all” type of recruiter you can’t be on two recruiting analysts top lists for the pac-12.

  28. Anyone else worried that GA hasn’t seemed to be able to convince any top notch coaches to come with him to Corvallis?

Aranda seems to have blown him off. He seems to be getting nowhere with Sitake from Utah.

Is it still a “great” hire if he can’t fill his OC and DC positions with talented individuals?

    • I would let it play out before making that call.. As many have said Aranda likely could have said to GA….look dude the first chance I get at being a Head Coach i’m out so you might want to get someone who will stick around with you for a few years…

    • Honestly, Aranda’s defense may be a better fit at Wisconsin. Looking at the 59-0 pasting they took from the only Pac-12-like offense they faced, I’d be okay with somebody else. Sitake would be great, but I think there are other candidates.

I don’t think he blew him off, I think they discussed it and he’s only going to be a DC for 1, maybe 2 more years before somebody hires him.

I think Sitake is very interested.

  29. Money talks and bullshit walks. GA came because we paid. Let’s hope OSU gives GA money to get a good staff in Corvallis, the land of milk and honey and no Goe.

  30. Aranda would only be here for one year and gone no point. I think we get sitake and i don’t think he’s having problems getting coordinators at least not yet. Im more interested in who the oc is going to be. Im sure pensyl is as well but i feel he’s already out the way ga talks about mobility at qb.

  31. Why would Sitake come to OSU? Seems like he is in a similar situation to Aranda where he will be able to get a HC gig somewhat soon.

Coming to OSU, and likely having a worse performing defense than he would at Utah since it’s a new system and players not recruited for it, probably wouldn’t help his odds at getting a HC job.

I don’t really think he will come to OSU, but we haven’t seen any denials yet. I would love for it to happen. Utah plays their bowl game this Saturday so I suppose we should know by the end of this weekend at the latest.

      • And sometimes people can’t state the real reason for their decision because one does not want to burn bridges (if they’re smart) in the small, insular work of D-1 college football coaching.

      • Usually coaches go to schools for rational reasons. I don’t think we can count on God, the universe, or whatever telling all our coaches this is where they’re supposed to be like Andersen claims.

As in my other post, after doing more research it seems Sitake is looking to possibly move on from Utah for more loyalty/stability. Seems like something the AD and Andersen could sell well considering the new commitment by Ed And Bob.

  32. Sitake would be making a good move to be DC at Oregon State. If he does well here is stock will be high. I say pay him 650+K if needed and hope he stays a few years. The PAC-12 is the best coaching league and I don’t think even being a head coach in the MWC is much better. You can get hired from the coordinator position to a future Pac-12 opening. Mac and Dykes and Leach will soon be under more pressure to win. Sitake can be a part of the new face and story that will get lots of press for a couple years. OSU would be a great chance to take his name and reputation to the next level.

    • I think you might be right that we get Sitake, but for the wrong reasons.

His stock is already high. He is already DC at Utah… How does moving to OSU improve his reputation at all? Why does it make his stock higher than it is from his success at Utah?

He’s already making $500,000. To me coming to OSU seems to present more risk than reward. Moving from a Pac-12 coordinator to another Pac-12 coordinator position won’t give much of a bump, but not having the same success because he doesn’t have recruits for his system would hurt his stock.

The main reason I could see Sitake coming here is because he is rumored to be unhappy with the AD at Utah. Based on what I read in the article below, I could totally see what we have going at OSU to be very attractive to Sitake.

Our penchant for loyalty and stability may payoff here. We also should be able to offer a competitive salary now that we are fully committing to athletics.

“It is widely believed that Utah’s defensive coordinator was unhappy this season that athletic director Chris Hill broke a pattern of extending core assistants heading into the final year of their contracts and that Sitake is amenable to heading to a program that offers more loyalty and job security. Roussel indicated that Sitake – a Ute assistant since 2005 — might balk at the idea of coaching for a conference rival, but this could still be one to keep an eye on. Sitake currently makes $500,000 a year so the Cougars would have to substantially increase their budget for assistant coaches to make a compelling offer.”

      • He kept trolling me in a bizarre way. By claiming I said things that I never did. Then when I told him to just use the search function to back up his criticisms [of me] he wouldn’t do it. He did that for about a year, and finally I got fed up. Some of his criticisms were odd, too, like not predicting the scores of games…just bizarre.

        • It is Christmas. You must be in the giving mood to reinstate him. Speaking of which I’m gonna go give a yuletide log to my crapper and call it a night. Ho Ho Ho and to all a good night!

      • They had lots and lots of arguments. Both seemed very stubborn with their opinions.

It was the classic tale of the immovable object vs. the unstoppable force. When they meet, the one that owns the website wins.

  33. It’s always tough to gauge a position coach’s impact, but I’ll try:

SMU Pass Defense Rankings Under Odum:
    2014- 106
    2013- 103
    2012- 116
    2011- 58
    2010- 76
    2009- 93
    2008- 99

Recruting Commits/Average Stars (he primarily recruited TX, FL, and CA):
    2014- 0/0
    2013- 2/2
    2012- 1/2
    2011- 2/2.5
    2010- 8/2.6
    2009- 7/2.7 (including a 4-star JC DB from TX)

His success generally follows the trend of the team, which started out well under June Jones, then faded in the last few years. He did recruit and coach 2013 First Team All-AAC CB Kenneth Acker (from Grant HS in Portland), a 6th-round pick of the 49ers this past year.

Jordan Griffin, 3-star Wisconsin Badgers commit, would consider Oregon State #Beavers if offered

      • Seriously, do we need to start a #LazyInterviewer hashtag? Every interview has been exactly the same. I’m actually surprised at energy level Andersen has had this week with all of the running around and answering the same repetitive questions.

        • I don’t listen to or watch any of these so I’m unfamiliar with them. But your characterization probably isn’t surprising; it’s still the mass media, just a different form.

Regarding the redundant theme and questions for Andersen though; if he’s willing to suffer mass media that spout the rhetoric and he’s giving them a unique, OSU-positive response, that’s a good thing.

Call-ins could be helpful in setting him up with productive questions – if the hosts actually uses them….

  35. Here’s something that’s been bothering me lately.

So Mike Riley has his staff at Oregon State. They’re his guys and they’re the best guys in the world and the best recruiters and we can do no better. Then he leaves for Nebraska…and only takes 4 of these chumps with him, including in my opinion only 1 that’s really worth a shit.

So why didn’t you fire and replace these other guys if you thought they sucked so bad that you won’t even take them to Nebraska?

Personally, I think he didn’t want to have the confrontation. It’s hard to have confrontations. It’s hard to win games too. Mike doesn’t do hard stuff.

    • The 4 guys he took were guys he had been with for a long long time. The other 5 were there because of other staff members leaving. I think he really only fired one guy in his tenure, Newhouse a few years ago. He’s not a person who will confront people face to face.

I imagine that Seumalo and Brennan were guys who didn’t want to leave for family reasons. Brasfield, Perry and Garrett were not Riley guys for very long. Opportunity for Riley to replace them without having to actually fire them.

        • He’s not being taken to Nebraska or being retained by Andersen.

I assume that he’ll be trying to get back in the NFL as an assistant again since that’s where he has the bulk of his coaching experience.

          • You can see his style of coaching in person on Hard Knocks from a few years ago with the Dallas Cowboys. He was pretty harsh to Martellus Bennett (although Bennett did need a kick in the ass anyways).

          • Yeah, it was very underwhelming and didn’t seem to impact much over the course of the season. I don’t think Riley wanted to make a hire that would substantially change his offense.

          • What’s interesting is that people were defending the hire. As if John Garrett would be some kind of game changer. I was reading the Nebraska forums recently. They are saying the SAME things about Riley…lol. I think there are times when you know a guy is a game changer (andersen) and when you hope/rationalize that he is (Riley/Garrett, etc).

          • Angry, I grew up a Nebraska fan due to an older sister and brother getting both bachelors and masters degrees from there. By the time I get through educating my brother about Riley at Xmas, he may need to get put on suicide watch.

The best thing on the Neb. boards were posters getting excited about have a designated special teams coach! Man are they in for a rude shock. Banker still not anointed as DC, however.

          • Lol. I feel a solidarity with those guys. I went to their board and tried to explain Riley to them. Some appreciated it, but many got defensive. It’s the same thing we see in the Garrett thread. Reality is a bitch.

          • Banker hasn’t been named the DC yet because he is one of the greatest football minds to have ever walked the earth, and his mere presence transcends little things like labels that might pigeon-hole his greatness.

          • hahahhaa… Hey I had it as a B largely because of the following point:

“He can come in and say why the hell would we ever have to play walk on linemen at Oregon State and everyone including Riley will listen. 20 years of NFL experience gives you that respect.”

I honestly think this is what happen.. Garret probably challenged the status quo too much but was unable to get anything to change. The offense was exactly the same (only worse) this year.. That wreaks of either Garret offering no insight or Riley being stubborn and staying stuck in his ways..

I’m willing to be the latter is the case.

      • MR fired Ungerer a few years back too. But very passive aggressive in the delivery, definitely not in a ‘hey sorry it didn’t work out bro’ way.

  36. UNLV: Tony Sanchez has completed his staff. On Colin Cowherd’s show, Sanchez confirmed the hiring of Houston inside receivers / tight ends coach Jamie Christian as running backs coach, Georgia State defensive backs coach J.D. Williams as cornerbacks coach, Oregon State defensive line coach Joe Seumalo in the same role and USC assistant strength and conditioning coach Keith Belton as the head strength coach. He will announce his defensive coordinator and safeties coaches on Friday. Keep track of new coaching staffs here.

Three-star Yuma (Ariz.) Yuma Catholic TE Matt Pistone tells me he has officially decommitted from Oregon State. #BoiseState target

This just means we’re getting Penniston, right?

    • So far recruiting has been a disaster. 2 star Juco, possibly a 2 star from Florida, a bunch of our best guys decommitting…

I think once the dead period is over we wind up with a good class, but so far this is troubling.

      • it was already a disaster with Riley and Co. I think when it’s all said and done we will be fine. Especially after GA plucks a few Wisky commits

      • Think of it this way: it’s easier to decommit than commit. We’re headed the wrong way now, but better we have the chance to fill those spots with guys that want to play for GA then have them waste a year, then leave.

        • I just thought more west coast recruits would follow Andersen. He’s a big name, made a splash, plays an aggressive style, and is known as a good recruiter. I still think that will happen, but each day that passes makes me a bit concerned. I think the Greek QB follows him, and that kid looks really good. I think a few others from WI follow. Until it all goes down I’m nervous, though, because the current signees kind of stink except for maybe 5.

  38. From the O

Andersen added the current recruiting “dead period,” where in-person contact between prospects and coaches is prohibited until Jan. 14, has allowed him to slow down on hires. And he is especially glad he hasn’t “jumped the gun” on coaching moves after studying Pac-12 film during the past week. Those sessions have only reinforced how up-tempo the league is, and that the defensive staff should be familiar with combating that style of play.

“My views changed on a few coaches as I went through this week,” Andersen said. ” … There’s some uniqueness to this league with the amount of pace that’s played, and you’ve got to make sure you put that you put that defensive staff in a position to be able to, I guess hire guys that have had some experience in those settings.”

I love it, tailoring hires to the style of play. It really reinforces the idea that not bringing in Aranda was a calculated move. Instead, we will get somebody who knows how and is committed stop the spread offense.

    • Great article, wow. Eggers does it again. I really like this piece below.

“I feel like I’m swinging for the fences with the four people who are in it,” he said. “Oregon State deserves the opportunity to swing for the fence.”

I am liking this guy more and more. He knows exactly what he wants and won’t settle.

    • So, 2 candidates for OC, 2 for DC.

I think Eggers is probably right that Todd Orlando and Kalani Sitake are the defensive guys he has in mind. I think both would be great. Gary Andersen gave Sitake his first job and Sitake hasn’t exactly felt the love from Utah. This recent contract extension offer hasn’t been signed yet, so that’s my guess as to who it is. I know footballscoop said ‘no chance’ about Orlando, but they’d have said the same about Gary Andersen to Oregon State if they’d been asked about that rumor.

All the talk about Andy Ludwig…I just doubt he’s a candidate. Kevin McGiven (Utah State OC) still seems possible. I’d say Dave Baldwin (Colorado State OC) would be probably the leading candidate if he’s not going to Florida.

      • I think you’re right.

And I really don’t see Ludwig at all at this point.

He mentions Orlando and Sitake since they have been subject of rumors already, but doesn’t mention the names of the OC candidates probably because their names haven’t been subject of open speculation yet in the media.

Andersen saying in other interviews that ideally the offense would be like Utah State was his last two years does really make me think of the CSU OC (was GA’s OC in 2011) and the current USU OC as pretty solid guesses. I’m assuming that USU has stayed with a similar system since GA left with Mett Wells taking over as HC and McGiven taking over as OC.

Does anyone know why Dave Baldwin left USU for CSU? Is that a better job/more pay?

Gotta think that Sitake is the clear #1 candidate though. GA mentioned that after doing the Pac-12 film review he realized that Pac-12 coaching experience will help a lot with defensive hires because of how good the offenses are here. Hope we can lure him away.

Anyway, I think it’ll be fun to watch the USU and Utah bowl games this weekend and “evaluating” all those potential coaches.

  39. Those Huskers aren’t very happy with Banker being the DC. They’re starting to figure Riley out!

“Can’t speak for others, but my concern is that Banker is not enough of a “splash” hire to overcome the giant “Meh” burger that was the Riley hiring.

All that anyone says about Riley is that he’s a “nice guy.” That’s great and “nice guy” will do wonders to help repair the fractures in the program, but “nice guy” isn’t necessarily going to win championships or bring 4* and 5* recruits to Lincoln in droves. Now, “nice guy” CEO head coach paired with elite coordinators? Now you’ve got something!

But when you pair “Meh, nice guy” head coach with “Who?” coordinators, I’m worried. When that “Who?” defensive coordinator wouldn’t have gotten the job but for his having ridden the “Meh, nice guy’s” coattails for the last 20 years, I start to feel like I’ve seen this movie before. “

  40. after reading this, good fucking riddance Riley you piece of shit. Yeah, it’s so difficult to recruit to Corvallis and Oregon State. Especially when you don’t even fucking try. I get that Nebraska can recruit itself. But jesus, if he’d have put out that effort in the last 5 years? Well, who gives a fuck. I’d rather have GA instead.

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/12009292/behind-scenes-quiet-search-brought-mike-riley-nebraska-cornhuskers

  41. Meh… he’s NU’s neat deal now.

Just take a deep breath and chant quietly to yourself, “He took Banker and Read with him. He took Banker and Read with him. It’s a neat deal.”

  42. 6′ 1″ CB Jay Irvine from Jacksonville has named OSU his new leader. Was recruited at Wisc, following Andersen, and aware of OSU “putting players into NFL,” Likes PAC-12 and regular program “exposure” as well.

Visits January 16 and if it goes well says its likely he’ll commit.

  43. GA says he wants a DC with experience coaching Against The Style Of offenses they run in the pac12. How many DC r there out there that can stop a well run spread like Oregon runs?

  44. Anybody have any info on Austin Dodge (Southern Oregon)? I don’t know anything about him, but been reading that he’s playing in the NAIA championship game currently and has set all sorts of school and NAIA records playing QB. Also read he was a former Beaver? Anybody know what happened to him and why he didn’t stick around?

    • I’d take him but definitely prefer Sitake. ESPN just said at end of Vegas Bowl there were rumors of him taking another job. That would most likely be Oregon State.
