17.Dec.2014 DePaul at Oregon State

Thursday, 7pm on pac-12 network.

I’m putting up the thread a day early because people seem stoked about this team’s effort. Let’s keep the football talk to the thread below. Feel free to discuss the lady Beavs. That was the first female basketball I’ve ever watched yesterday, and it was really awkward at first but then it grew on me. If they continue to do well, any chance they generate positive revenue? That would be a nice windfall.

DePaul is probably the best test yet so it’s a pretty exciting game. Go Beavs.

I don’t think any women’s basketball programs make money.

I purchased two season tickets a month ago for WBB to show my support for Coach Rueck and had OSU donate them to a local program for young girls. Unlike Football, I didn’t have to pay a donation to purchase season tickets, which I suspect makes up a nice chunk of money. Without that donation, I doubt WBB could ever be in the black.

If not turn a profit, at least close the gap. Even with sustained success, I doubt the women’s team would earn a profit. I’m guessing the ticket revenue can’t even pay the coaches salaries.

Women’s basketball reminds me of high school basketball in the suburbs. Some of the players are talented but none can dunk.

Exactly. If the sport can come close to supporting itself that would be great. I’d like to see the figures and if the revenue has picked up with the winning. Maybe people should make their donations to secondary programs like these instead of football since football is healthy.

They might want to follow the wrestling team’s lead. They have an endowment setup to pay for scholarships, expenses and coaches salaries.

If the wbb team does have a nice run, they could raise funds for that vs asking for donations for season tickets.

Success does not equal closing the gap

Extensions for Rueck will likely put OSU womens profits in about the same boat they’ve always been. What you don’t want is a buy out like Wagners to really hurt the revenues

A football stadium costing millions of dollars used perhaps 10-20 times a year…Does a football team at the University level make money? Aha, donors, different pocket of money in the same pair of pants.

Upkeep, police on game days, rent, garbage, power, sewer, water etc. are never included. Hard overhead costs are always charged .01 on the dollar or less. Thirty nine out of one hundred twenty six D1 schools bring in less than 8 million and are insolvent. Revenue, 40 million, is not the same as net profit. Creative accounting, switching pockets, is the rule in college football.

These players have bought in. The effort is awesome. This is why I stress D first when I talked about the next football coach…D effort translates to other parts of the game. Beavs winning by playing intense D, getting turnovers, cashing them in. Depaul doesn’t look like bad team, either.

Hard to tell from TV but during time-outs (I still believe it should be times-out) the assistant coaches seem to swarm to the players with individual coaching points. The Beavs should have Tinkle for the duration of Tres’s time at OSU. After that, we’ll see how serious everyone is about saying we don’t mind if a good coach uses OSU as a stepping stone because he/she would be leaving the program in better shape.

It’s really eye opening how pervasive this line of thought is among the media regarding Corvallis. It seems to have bubbled forth with the recent coaching changes. I wish I could figure out where it started. It’s like it’s embedded in the genetics of the local and national media now. You have hacks like O’Neill and Callabro who use it has their go to conversation. I took note that they did not mention the successful women’s team one time during the telecast.

You never heard anything like this when Ralph Miller was coach. He left a very successful Iowa team to come to Corvallis. You didn’t hear much about Corvallis being a shit hole when Dennis Erickson came aboard. It needs to stop.

Tweets and blogs aside, I believe a well-written letter to Pac-12 administrators is in order. I’ll attempt one after the holidays – especially if this continues. As far as I know, Corvallis is the only Pac-12 town that is disparaged, on-air, by Pac-12 announcers. My least favorite was last year when wbb was dismantling UW. The female announcer said it was “surgical”, commented about Scott Rueck, then in doleful, funereal tones “do you know hard it is to recruit to Cor—val—-lis. I’m certain I can find out her name, but if anyone knows off-hand that would be helpful. I want to use specific examples.

I’ll tell you where it came from: it was the desperation rationale of the Schell, Goe, Jaynes pro-Riley apology crowd and there wasn’t enough push back from the likes of Parker and Eggers and so it gained currency. And for what: to justify the continued tenure of a worn out, washed up football coach. It’s a true tragedy. And I also believe that the predominance of that narrative began to really bother people like Pat Casey and Ed Ray and it was their direct and indirect pressure on De Carolis to Riley that finally broke the log-jam.

This looked like the Beavers playing another Mississippi Valley State. Even without Reid, they still hit on all cylinders. Monster game from Robbins. Refs called some BS on both sides, so while irritating they were pretty consistent. Solid, complete game. They are learning and they are buying in and it’s great to watch.

Were the Pac-12 announcers that bad? I was at the game so I didn’t get to see a lot. There’s a few highlights I wish I could see again, like the Crockett dunk in the first half, then that missed dunk GPII had. If that had went in, I would’ve had to leave because he just about baptized dude.

The producer of the game must have talked to that idiot Keven O’Neill. There’s a clip of him interviewing Victor Robbins post game and he mentions that Robbins comes off of the bench (after saying during the game that the Beavs will need bench scoring during P-12 play) and he finally gets it right that Western Oregon is a D-2 school after calling them a NAIA school throughout the game.

With only an 8 man rotation, these guys are going to be spent by the end of the year. Plus they will need to stay healthy the entire time to avoid playing the walk ons for extended minutes. I expect every team to full court press the Beavs. While they were able to break the press vs DePaul, there will be much more athleticism in conference play.

I predict they will finish again in 10th place ahead of WSU and USC. While the guys have shown they are talented, there just isn’t enough of them.

Assuming they finish non-conference at 10-2, which is likely, and they go 5-13 in conference (entire possible), that’s a 15-15 record heading into the Pac-12 tourney. I would have been surprised if they won more than 8-10 games the entire season.

And that was after the Pac 10 had some ridiculous number of kids get drafted. The Pac was way down in 2008-09.

Still… it was what it was… and better than O’fer.

The narrative for Wayne Tinkle is playing out fairly similar to CR’s first year.

No expectations. Coming off very disappointing seasons. Picked last in the preseason media poll. The new coach’s resume is better than the last. Excitement over 5 incoming recruits.

Everyone was talking about making the NCAAs after CR’s first year. Also talk of him going to Kansas when they had an opening. Tinkle has had a positive start but he hasn’t achieved anything yet.

I can’t remember the exact numbers I gave, probably because I gave a range. I think I said we would win between 13 and 17 games, probably trending toward the low side. But I think that was with 5-8 league wins. I still think 5-8 is a reasonable number. But they’ve beaten my expectations so far.

We’ll see what happens when we start making road trips. It might be a night and day thing between home and road games in terms of comfort and shooting the ball and focus.

I do, it just says that the triple double has got him on scouts radar now. Scouts say they have not watched him in person but have started to watch his games on tape. If he can keep up his production in conference play, then he should start getting serious looks.

Every week we ask each of you to identify a potential draft sleeper for us. Who has caught your attention this week?

Pelton: Gary Payton II, G, Oregon State

Earlier this week, GPII made headlines by posting the Beavers’ first triple-double since his Hall of Fame father recorded one 26 years ago. This Payton, a JC transfer, has been one of the nation’s most productive players so far, stuffing the stat sheet. He is one of three players in the nation with steal and block rates both better than 4.0 percent in at least 200 minutes, and is one of the nation’s top 150 defensive rebounders from the backcourt. As a result, he rates as one of the nation’s top 10 players this season by my translated stats. Payton has done this against a weak schedule, and he’s sharing playmaking responsibilities, but are scouts taking notice? Could there be another Payton in the NBA?

Ford: That’s a nice call. I don’t think he had garnered much attention at all from NBA scouts until he netted that triple-double against Grambling State on Monday (10 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, 6 steals). When I called around to scouts, none of them had scouted him live and a few had just started watching video. I’m doing the same. You’re putting him on the radar, Kevin. From early glances, he looks as if he could make a rapid rise on the board if he can keep that type of play up in conference play. As I said, the NBA is hungry for point guards right now, and the name recognition should keep him in the conversation.

This morning’s game could be a trap. Quinnipiac beat Lehigh 3 days ago by 15. Lehigh beat ASU last night in 3OTs. Beavs need to continue the hard play on defense!

Congrats to the Lady Beavs…another win yesterday to go 10-0.
