General Thread/recruiting thread

Some nice pickups the past few days. Rivals has Morris and Taylor as 5.7, which is the highest a recruit can go before getting a 4-star. Taylor very likely will be a 4-star. Now the harder part of keeping these guys.

Back to the social justice warrior talk in the other thread, this video is pretty good, and it relates to what’s going on on college campuses. Nice to see growing backlash against these people.

  1. Until the Beavs get a few signature wins (PAC 12 wins), I think that recruiting will be decent but not great. I really believe that after this season we could see some very interesting recruits looking our way.

Anyone have any analysis on the LB pick-up. Seems like limited video of him on D.

  2. It almost seemed that all of those recruits announcing was planned on the same day to make a big splash. Idk if im right but not a bad plan if it was true. Its still early but luckily Andersen has done a good job of keeping most of his recruits so far. It will also be interesting to see what happens when all of our mission players start coming back. Hopefully they dont follow sitake to byu.

  3. Gotta love that the first example he gives of things he’s shocked by is something happening at UO. Also, how did I not hear about that because that is straight nuts. UO students are as ignorant as they come.

    • Wow he has Baylor and ole miss in there. A couple that i would have thrown out immediately. Sux for us best of luck to him.

  4. I didn’t watch the entire video, but it looks like they’re trying to paint themselves as victims and over generalize about some anecdotal stories. Kind of a mish mosh cluster shit; just grabbing at different stuff.

    • I think it’s cute when these people get their think on.

stopped watching when I saw the list of campus zeitgeist or whatever.

      1. I hate to defend Ducks, but there was nothing to nothing about that MLKj quote “story.”
      2. Recognizing and removing micro-inequities is a rather effective management tool. I don’t know about this specific implementation, but like anything else it can be done poorly… I guess. I do enjoy the knee-jerk fallacy of division in mentioning it.
      3. Apparently it’s hard to fire a lawyer who can’t teach. But the end result will be the same as the originally intended result. More egregious to me was OSU pinching pennies so much that it kept them from doing the right thing and slapping a for cause clause in Wagner when she was canned.

  5. and…
“The losing was one of the biggest factors in losing.”

I wonder how many posts they have in their own classifieds for copy editors.

  6. On to football. Rodent Bowl look ahead…….Critical player for the Golden land rodents, TE Brandon Lingen.

#Gophers Academic All-American TE Brandon Lingen broke onto the scene last season. Here’s some of his best moments. http://snpy.tv/1qzMUKK

  7. So were the only team with no 4 star commits except for Utah who only has one juco commit. I know stars aren’t everything but it’s a bit concerning that everyone else has at least one. Its still early tho i guess.

    • 2 guys listed are the highest 3* rating available before becoming a 4*, so we’re close to having 2 right now and senior seasons can change those ratings

      • Ya thats what i figured but im just saying. Plus Andersen seems to be ahead of the curve on a lot of players. Do guys ever get downgraded?

        • In general, i think once a guy achieves a set of measurables which lead to a 4* rating, they keep that measurable ( like a personal best in the 40M )
So, the only way they would get downgraded is if the benchmarks for a rating change. Also, I think there is a curve involved. So if a bunch of players move up into 4* status, it may bump some of the existing 4* guys back down to 3*.

It’s all variable based on how the site doing the ratings decides to measure things, and how accurate their measurements are, etc.

That being said, I’ve rarely seen guys move down, other that a 4* highschool guy who goes JUCO, then somehow gets rated a 3* after 2 years of junior college ball.

    • Follow up comments were mildly interesting. Including: “didn’t work at OSU”, and “more likely a 50/50 W/L record”………….there certainly is an “angry husker” contingent lurking out there.

        • Yes, as we all remember so well.
I take it as an indication that some of these huskers haven’t done much homework, they’ll learn.

        • Why does everyone choose to ignore the RIley offense when he had a good O Line and good running backs? I’d think the Run Pass was close to 50/50. Bernard and Quizz both had a lot of carries. Riley’s fault was that he knew who the best player(s) on the team were and put the ball in their hands as much as possible.

          • Yeah, Riley’s a real genius; kept saying he wanted to run more when Mannion was QB and just wasn’t able to bring himself to do it. How ’bout that W/L record!

It’s all good though, Mannion got his record and Riley got his walkin’ papers.

          • Yve got to carry the ball behind a good line. Quizz did not.

On top of that, Quizz was the only back who would carry the ball. The second leading back in terms of carries was the QB, because sacks are counted as runs… as are kneel downs. Maybe I overstate this, and the fly sweep was the second option. Does it matter? The fly sweep wasn’t to establish dominance at the line. It was to avoid it.

Remove the sweeps, sacks and kneel downs. And what was originally, during the best seasons, a 55/45 pass/run ratio turns into about 63/37. And that includes those games where we were leading but decided to run four straight three-and-out series consisting of nothing but runs and starting in the late third quarter. That was how those 30-10 leads ended up being 30-24 wins… where the pass/run ratio was still 40/30 despite the last 12 plays being dive plays.

The two worst games ever were in 2012 when we lost to two of history’s worst run defenses because we felt we had to go all pass happy against them. Oddly enough, Mannion came in as a reserve in one of those games and did nothing but hand the ball off and run it over the right side.

            Boom! TD!

Then we went back to doing nothing that was going to work, namely running it down Texas’ throat … like the rest of their conference did to them.

If we go back and look at when we had SJax, some real hosses in the trenches and Chryst calling the plays, I think we will find some more balanced ratios. But that was about it.

  8. Danny’s been paying attention, in his “superlatives” piece on the baseball season, he lists Jake as the player with “the MOST to prove”.

  9. Maybe this snub by the NCAA Committee and Meggs at UW is a good thing for Pat Casey. It will perhaps rekindle a fire under him. I know he’s previously expressed his views on the toll it takes on him to manage and nothing gets your juices going when you’re disrespected.

    • Agreed.

Meggs was just another wart manifested. Those in denial of the humanity of Casey will say otherwise. But this was a major show of disrespect by his peers.

      • Disrespect? Absolutely!

I actually figured Casey’s stature was a factor which would put the Beavs in; not that anything beyond their record was needed (especially in view of ASU’s selectiion as a #2).

    • That’s crappy news. Just lost half the male viewing demographic.

The cynic in me says that maybe Ionescu is back in play since the rumor was that she wanted her high school coach to be hired. Though I don’t think Rueck is that desperate for one player.

Logic says Kavanaugh got a job somewhere else and she’s following. She got paid decent money so they could afford to have an extended honeymoon. It’s also not a bad time to take time off either. She’ll be able to land a job where ever they end up because of the success of the program.

    • She and her future husband are ultra religious, which prevents her from working once she marries. Nothing more to see here. Hopefully she rethinks this whole thing.

    • Slightly better photo accompanies the article in the big O. Second comment there says it all in a reasonably classy way, wink, wink“I will miss seeing her on the sideline”

  10. I see UW lost in 14 innings. Karma. Next year’s series in Seattle is going to be epic and Beaver Nation should flood the place to give Meggs a piece of their mind,.

        • I’d never seen that interview before. I think he makes some interesting points and I applaud him for stating them clearly and sticking to them.

That said, only a black Muslim sports icon could say what he said and not be villified and outcast. I imagine that interview took place in the 70s and things were very different then, but if he was a white Texan he still wouldn’t have lived it down.

          • Oh, he was vilified and outcast before any of this. Hell, he was vilified and outcast before he was Muslim… but after he was a black man.

He talked about all of it in his autobiography. He understood in his later years that he was wrong about a lot of stuff because he was being reactionary to how he had been treated, not rational.

He said something along the lines of, “I said I was the greatest, not the smartest.”

          • Yes, Ali would be a favorite of Jacks. Poor downtrodden black man. Jack’s white guilt just burst out from all orifices when he thinks or the champ. Most people would be sickened by Ali’s beliefs, but not Jack.

            Muhammad Ali on homosexuality:
“All Jews and gentiles are devils… Blacks are no devils… Everything black people doing wrong comes from [the white people]: Drinking, smoking, prostitution, homosexuality, stealing, gambling: It all comes from [the white people]”

Muhammad Ali on killing blacks for having relationships with whites:
In an interview with Playboy Ali said “A black man should be killed if he’s messing with a white woman.” When the interviewer asked about black women crossing the colour barrier, Ali responded: “Then she dies. Kill her, too.”
The Playboy journalist, who interviewed the boxer, was closer to the mark when he observed of his subject: “You’re beginning to sound like a carbon copy of a white racist.”

          • You have issues. And you’re probably short too.

If you refuse to have any perspective of history, why bother posting this?

  11. D1 reports this “tweet of the day” from North Carolina ace Zac Gallen, “South Alabama put on a really good show today too. Glad their AD, Joel Ehrdman (sel. committe chair), thought they were deserving of a bid”

BTW, today the Jags eliminated the (4th seeded) losers from Alabama State. On to game 5.

  12. Vandy gets bent over by Xavier 15-1. Ole Miss goes 2 and BBQ in their OWN regional, Clemson going down in flames vs Oklahoma St in their own regional as well. Virginny loses in their own regional to East Carolina. Yup. The committee got this bracket right. How bout the ACC and SEC just have their own tournament and they can declare the winner national champion?

ASU staved off elimination earlier today.

  13. NC State about to get sent to the losers bracket in their own regional as well. But the odds are still that better than half of the super regional hosts will be from the ACC and SEC. Since ya know, they got 13 of 16 regional host sites.

Ole Miss – 2 and BBQ
    Vandy – 2 and BBQ

  14. For the sake of parity I think the rule should be that no more than the top 3 teams from a conference get to host. Maybe 4. If you can’t finish in the top 3 or 4 of your conference you don’t deserve to be a regional host.

  15. Can’t believe this story circulating today. Making the rounds I guess :-)! Just seems like more of the same — obstacles at every turn along the way!

Needless to say much will be apparent this fall and winter. The truth about all coaches listed will come to light.

  16. Care to enlighten what’s going on in Eugene? Or you just gonna blow smoke up everyone’s ass?

I’ll take a stab though. Wayne Tinkle or Gary Andersen sleeping with Mandy Close?

    Really chickenshit here Jack

  17. Dam it the Beavers need to get back to the Rose Bowl. Think OSU needs a goal of making it by 2022 from the university level. Maybe it will coincide with Phase 3 getting done for the mirrored double deck on both sides. Regardless, it is time to amp up the effort and get it done again at Oregon State.

My prediction is it happens in 2031. Much later then I am hoping for. Seeing Andersen build it up and have a shot between 2019-2022 may be one of our stronger shots.

RISE UP BEAVER NATION! ENJOY MAKING A STATEMENT AGAIN LIKE THE FIESTA BEAVS!

  18. Utah eliminated by Tulane. ASU gets revenge on Gonzaga by eliminating them, will play TCU later but must beat them twice. UW and Arizona also both in the losers bracket and play elimination games later this evening

  19. ASU going down big, 8-1 in the 8th. Leg humpers already down 6-0 to Xavier in the 2nd. Zony up 4-2 in the 5th

  20. My god did Golden St look good most of that 3rd quarter and early 4th. Turn a 6 pt lead into a 32 pt lead.

A few weeks ago when Cleveland was rolling thru the eastern conference on the Dan Patrick show they were all in agreement that Cleveland looked the best in the playoffs and were the favorite to win it all. I laughed. Sorry. Playing Detroit, Atlanta and Toronto does not prepare a team for the finals vs the stacked west right now. First two games have shown that they aren’t even in the same stratosphere as GS

  21. I actually enjoy watching Golden St. When they’re rolling like they did in the 2nd half, they’re fun to watch. Kinda reminds me of the showtime lakers

    • I don’t watch NBA, but is Cleveland like the 4 or 5th best team in the league? GS, SA, OKC are likely the top 3? The Western Conference finals were probably the real “Finals.”

  22. Tweet-box above says that Tinks Jr. will be cleared for all basketball activities in early september. Good news… hopefully it’s not a chronic problem.

Also, check out the catch by Tyson Penn. He’s a good story… I really hope he is successful.

  23. Watched a lot of CBB this weekend. Beav’s got a major hose job. Definitely should have been in the field. Goph’s acquitted themselves pretty well. Hopefully Ice pulls a Wetzler and comes back.

  24. So there’s an article on blitz about carmoni green. He says he’s going to come for a visit in june. It says that he plans on taking an official with us and Illinois also probably. I also saw a tweet however that he would commit before his first senior game. He would be a good get and put us in a good spot for receivers in this class.

  25. Is this dead week? This thread’s been up for a week and only 110 comments?

    New topic please? How about?

Someone ask our Athletic Director about the big snub? Why have we only heard from Casey? Anyone else give a …?

    • -Yes, -no its at 114 now.
-Ok. – What would you like so see the football team accomplish this season (be specific, not “win more games”)
-Maybe -Casey is the only one that matters. -Shit?

It’s slow for the next few months, unless you would like jack to post obscure music from youtube.

      • Just found a topic for you…….Kimbo Slice is dead. I don’t know if anybody caught his last fight but it was like 2 walrus’s…..walrui?…rolling around the octagon.

    • Yeah I don’t know what you expect since there’s nothing going on.

I could start a forum, though, so people can make their own topics. Nothing that’s happening right now interests me.

  26. Sounding like Coach Tinkle had his contract extended through 2022. I wish we wouldn’t go so long on these contracts, since it seems like we’ve gotten burned on those a time or two.

  27. So, during these slow periods I have nothing to write about.

Would you rather have nothing going on, or do you want me to bring the forums back? I might ditch wordpress all together and make angrybeavs.com a forum. I’m leaning towards that because then people can talk about what they wish.

    • What type of categories would you want for a forum?

Football, Basketball, Baseball…recruiting info separate or just include it under those 3?

Women’s sports a separate area or include under those?

Maybe a general discussion and “other” for things like wrestling, volleyball, etc?

Give me some ideas. This area is going to die because I’ve got nothing, so we need to move to the forums. It will be much more lively if this area disappears and we only have the forums, and people can create their own discussions.

    • I would completely support a forum format. Anything that gets us back to the old IRC days is good in my book.

Besides, I could post all over the place and watch as dumkopfs wonder what was said in response to something I posted but was blocked by an ignore button.

Football, baseball and hoops (both genders) deserve their own. Then I would title another “Olympic Sports,” and one more for miscellaneous. I guess I would throw softball in with baseball and let people post as they see fit for that sport within that category. The same could be said of hoops. Why discriminate just because of gender? Just roll it all into one.

      • So… Football, Baseball/Softball, Hoops, Olympic Sports and misc.

If you want to add a junk pile where you can send OT posts, that’s also cool.
