Home Baseball Beavs Get Snubbed

Beavs Get Snubbed

127

Was this payback at the pac-12 for bombing in the basketball tournament?

Beavs weren’t good all year and had a shaky rotation, so in a way it’s fair, but with a strong finish/sorting out the rotation, at least give them a tough draw somewhere.

Casey being slow to make obvious and necessary changes was the difference.

  1. When the committee chairman asked why he 5 ACC teams with losing conference records got in he said it all goes back to their ‘selection criteria’ such as finishing strong & strength of schedule.

Yeah OSU shutting out UCLA and a team for first time since 1907 and winning 5 of last 6 including on the road was poor. Beavs had 35 wins and a winning conference record of 16-14.

Guess finishing strong in the ACC is winning an expected home series 2-1 on the final weekend despite conference record. Let’s put all those teams in.

    Disgusting.

    • 5 of 6 against teams with an RPI in the 90s. The league in general was down this year.

The highest RPI was Arizona and it was mid-20s all year.

The Beavers lost games to teams like San Francisco at home, and they lost a series on the road to Washington State, by far the worst team in the conference. They also dropped a home series to Oregon, which wasn’t that great of a team either.

Yeah, there’s an East Coast Bias, for sure. However, as much as I hate to admit it – this time a lot of the East Coast Bias was correct.

Sure, it’s disappointing the Beavers didn’t get in. But go back through the schedule and circle the games that they SHOULD have won and didn’t. At the end of the day, they only have themselves to blame for being without a chair when the music stopped.

      • Yep. As a Beaver fan I felt this was a bad team that left a bad taste in my mouth. So I see why they wouldn’t want the Beavs. The issue, though, is the teams they took over the Beavs. Beavs did have a better resume than many teams selected, and I think that’s why people get mad. I think we all see the team was flawed/mediocre. But S. Alabama, Duke (my friend works at Duke and said they didn’t even make the ACC tourney…). Hard to make an argument ASU and Washington were better, too.

      • Disagree….the committee is saying the entire west coast is down this year and the east coast is all of a sudden that good this year….?!?! Count the teams going to the tournament for each year going back each year for 15 years, you’ll will see that the committee’s decisions are trending towards the south and southeast teams more and more each year. San Francisco has a good program, and you could say the lack of parity in the conference because the PAC is stacked with good teams (they beat up each other), and the argument could sway FOR the PAC if the committee were biased towards the PAC instead.
Hogwash, the committee wants there own in the tournament — it is a committee led by East Coast and South East administrators.
The entire West coast is not down this year….just as much talent plays in the West as anywhere in the country — why no West coast regionals?

  2. I understand the team watched in private, a surprise but a smart move.
Elliott Cary and Ben Wetzler tweet the only worthwhile response: “use it as motivation, take it out on the rest of the country next year”

So many questionable choices; 10 of 14 ACC? really?; ASU in as a two seed no less? really?

And, some interesting stats to digest: Beavs led the PAC12 conference with a 3.35 ERA and .232 BA against; only team in the PAC to allow less than 100 earned runs over 30 conf games. Hmmm, PCOY for “too late”?

  3. Oregon State swept Arizona State, had the same conference record (16-14, tied for 3rd in the PAC-12), and a better overall record (1 more win, two fewer losses). RPI ranking was 43 for ASU and 44 for OSU.

Arizona State received a #2 seed. Beavs were excluded from the tournament. Wait, what?

    • I think it was two things:

      1. That middle of the season patch where Casey kept throwing Jake Thompson out there despite the Beavs getting shelled and dropping in the polls each week.
      2. Hatred of the pac-12 for bombing in hoops.

Mostly it was #1, I think, and I don’t blame them because that patch left a very bad taste for me, too. Even with the strong finish I kept saying this is a pretty bad/flawed team. All that said, the resume compared to other teams that made it in all screams they should have been in (I thought a 3 seed where they had to travel far was fair), and if you want to penalize them give them a tough draw. This is worse than the 2007 snub.

BUT, Casey not making those obvious changes was the main reason. I said it at the time, that he needed to audition new arms and let the chips fall, and doing that much too late came back to bite them.

      • I’d change your #2 to east coast bias and corruption of the NCAA (S. Alabama AD chaired the committee, they got in). Maybe corruption is too strong, undue influence of selection committee members might be better.

Still, certainly agree that #1 was the major factor/excuse for leaving the Beavs out.

        • The NCAA is awful and needs to go away, but I’m not sure this is bias since I don’t have the bad taste out of my mouth from that middle of the season stretch, and I’m west coast/osu biased. So is it really East Coast bias? I think they should have to explain themselves and be more transparent. Giving one statement and then it’s forgotten isn’t acceptable. Maybe we should lobby that the record the selection process on camera so American can look over the decisions. I understand the rationale for leaving the Beavs out, but not when compared to some teams they let in…that’s when things break down and need much more explanation than we got. My guess is SOS with regard to ASU. Beavs were 121 and ASU 58. But that’s a guess. Without hearing what went on we’ll never know. Audit the NCAA!

          • They specifically said how a team finishes the season is a big factor in their decision. The middle of the season was our weak stretch but we finished very strong.

          • But that’s my entire point. A quote like that needs to have follow up questions and be scrutinized. Put a camera on the selection process and let’s hear the dialogue that went into OSU’s finish.

Casey is more to blame. There was no reason to have Jake Thompson pitching anything but the occasional midweek game. If I can see this and call it week 1, the head coach should see it and make the change immediately.

          • Right, was saying it more as support for your statement rather than to be contrarion. The ESPN reporter did very little to question the chairman and those interviews always feel like softball pre-planned Q&A sessions anyway. Oh well. A couple of weeks ago i wouldnt have considered the Beavs to even be a bubble team so I guess i cant be too upset. My guess is much of the selection is done prior to the last couple weeks of the season and those last 2 weeks really had little influence on the decision making, other than minor tweaks for conference winners like Utah.

  4. hopefully the NorthWest conference has a coach that can elevate the Beaver program to where Casey’s warts can’t take it

  5. I’m waiting to see Pat Caseys response. He will be pissed but I am sure he will make a reserved statement, diplomatically positioning himself for the next selection committee. Personally I would come unglued and call for investigations. I would get commissioner Scott involved.

  6. Yes, Casey made mistakes, and this year’s OSU team had flaws. I would add that the late season hitting slumps of KJ Harrison and Logan Ice perhaps would have continued into the tournament, and made it tough for the Beavers to get very far (even if the late season surge in OSU pitching continued — which was far from a sure thing).

But none of that explains or excuses the inconsistent treatment of ASU vs OSU by the NCAA tournament committee. The bad patch of play by the Beavers was already factored into the mix, since it impacted their conference record, their overall record, and their RPI. By all of the key metrics, ASU and OSU were essentially equal. Yet ASU was given a #2 seed, and OSU was excluded from the tournament. And that’s after OSU swept ASU in their three games this season.

If ASU had received a #4 seed, there might be an argument for OSU being excluded as — perhaps — a slightly weaker team overall. But once the committee gave ASU a #2 seed, I don’t see any way to justify excluding OSU from the tournament, given the equivalence of ASU and OSU in the key metrics.

Treating equals unequally is unfair. OSU got screwed here. The question is WHY?

Personally, my best guess is that OSU got screwed because the selection committee — with its SEC and ACC bias — decided that only 4 PAC-12 teams were getting in this year — no matter what . The committee believed OSU was the weakest of the three PAC-12 teams tied for 3rd place. So, in the committee’s view, the fact that OSU was only slightly worse than ASU was enough to bounce OSU from the tournament. That’s the only explanation that seems to make sense (at least to me).

But — if that’s the rationale –this is completely unfair to OSU, and is not the way the process is supposed to work. The committee is not supposed to set a quota for any league, But I suspect that’s what happened — under the hood — this season. And it sucks.

    • SOS for OSU 121 and ASU 58. I think that’s the only metric ASU beats OSU, and OSU swept them. So, the committee needs to answer the question how ASU gets a 2. Who is going to ask it? So far nobody. Everyone but Beaver fans have already forgotten about OSU, which is why this is allowed to happen.

  7. Scott can’t present his case based upon emotion – he should have his statisticians working on numbers asap. Can he ask for the recording? Is there freedom of information within the NCAA.

Although meaningless, do angrybeavs (and I assume they are very angry) root for Pac-12 teams to upset, surprise, and go deep into the tournament or do we hope they bomb because the Beavs didn’t get there? I guess we can cheer for Minnesota?

Euphoria because of the UCLA series to big thud in < 24 hours.

    • Please do cheer for Minnesota. A great comeback year played under the cloud of their pitching coach dying of Lymphoma. He passed away this past week during the second day of the B1G tourney. The team gave him a gift of the 22nd regular season championship a week ago Friday.
The B1G POY, Matt Fiedler, is a super young man I have watched grow up from a five year old.
Another patient in my office is going to the tourney with Princeton. Plays CF for the Tigers and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 9th to beat Yale for their championship.

      • Knew about the death of the pitching coach but not your personal knowledge of the players you mention. However, my suggestion of cheering for Minnesota was precisely because of the beavergopher affiliation.

  8. Beavs got screwed, and the committee is biased towards Southeast teams, and not necessarily against west coast or North…Not one west coast regional and ACC 5 teams with losing records, says it all!

  9. Chairman of the 2016 NCAA Selection Committee is Joel Erdmann, Athletic Director for the University of South Alabama. The last team in the tournament this year was South Alabama (50th in RPI).

Does anyone believe that — on the merits — South Alabama should have been picked over Oregon State for the last spot? Could it be more obvious WHY the committee chose South Alabama over Oregon State?

  10. Casey said more than I thought he would. He owes it to his players to express some frustration. Still, I think a lot more should be said by people that don’t have to watch what they say for fear of reprisal later by the selection committee.

Erdmann cannot justify his decision based on his own criteria.

I see that North Carolina was snubbed as well. I wonder what their fans are saying?

    • He’s right about everything he says, but the one thing he isn’t saying is that he pitched Jake Thompson too long. He needs to look in the mirror. Beavs would probably have 3 or 4 more wins and be in if he made changes earlier.

      • It is true that the team should never have placed itself in this position of being on the bubble, of giving the selection committee any doubt as to whether they should be in. I don’t know enough about baseball to question Casey. He may have made some bad decisions, but I am sure he made hundreds of good decisions as well. A lesser coach may not have gotten as much out of the players. Your point is well taken, but I hate to see an unfair decision out of what is supposed to be an unbiased committee.

  11. Pat Casey has weighed in, and seems to me he is focusing on the right points:

“Among the issues that vexed Casey: that Arizona State got into the tournament as a No. 2 seed [while Beavers bounced from the tournament]….”I’m not suggesting they should be in or out,” Casey said. “I’m just suggesting if they’re in, how are we not in?”

There’s teams that were behind us in the RPI, behind us in overall wins that got in the tournament. With the criteria that they use, I can’t find a reason that we wouldn’t be in the tournament.”

“The politics is so huge in these things and we obviously didn’t politic the way you’re supposed to politic to get people in,” Casey said.

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2016/05/oregon_state_baseball_coach_pa_2.html?hootPostID=d73a777ddaf1f9565f6089286e457141

  12. From the article below, a sense that the tournament was a longshot. Missed the ACC tournament and lost 10-1 to end the season. Finished weak, so no sense of snub in tarheel land.

    http://www.dailytarheel.com/article/2016/05/north-carolina-baseball-misses-out-on-ncaa-tournament-for-second-straight-year

    Story about South Alabama:

    http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2016/05/south_alabama_baseball_ncaa_re.html

“South Alabama had an RPI of 50 coming into Monday, and was one of the last three teams to earn at-large bids into the 64-team field, along with Nebraska and Southeastern Louisiana. The Jaguars began their conference season 15-0, but lost 9 of their last 15 regular-season Sun Belt games to finish in a tie for first with Louisiana-Lafayette.

South Alabama was the No. 2 seed for the Sun Belt tournament, but lost in the semifinal round. Louisiana-Lafayette beat Georgia Southern 5-0 in the championship game.

South Alabama has never advanced past the regional round. The Jaguars have played in a regional in Tallahassee four times: 1984, 1995, 2003 and 2005.”

  13. Yes, it’s political. So who are the politicians with the power here?

Set forth below are the members of the 2016 National Committee for NCAA Baseball:

Committee Chairman: AD, University of South Alabama, plus eight Athletic Directors from the following schools:

    University of Maryland
    University of South Carolina
    Florida Atlantic
    Georgia Institute of Technology
    Texas Christian
    Stony Brook (NY)
    Illinois State
    University of San Francisco

The 10th member of the National Committee is the Senior Associate Commissioner from the Colonial Athletic Association (East Coast).

    http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/2016DIMBA_PreChamps_Manual_20160225.pdf (at page 8).

Here is the breakdown of the National Committee by State and region:

The chairman and five of the ten members (i.e., half the committee) are from the South: Alabama, Maryland, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia

Two other members are from the East Coast

    One member is from Texas

    One member is from Illinois

    One member is from California

As for the Regional Advisory Committees that feed in to the National Committee’s selection process, there are 47 members. Only one of those is from the PAC-12 (Lindsay Meggs — Washington’s coach — who of course was able to get the Huskies into the tournament).

    http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/2016DIMBA_PreChamps_Manual_20160225.pdf (pages 9-10).

If change is going to happen, this is where it needs to focus. Larry Scott needs to push — HARD — to get more PAC-12 representation on these committees asap. Until that happens, you can be sure the PAC-12 will continue to get screwed. Simple as that.

  14. Yes we got screwed. But doesn’t anyone see if we hired a coach from McMinnville instead of Newberg, we’d be a lock to get in!!

  15. I was naive to think the committee was unbiased. Obviously their first objective is to get their team represented. Better check their bank account statements.

  16. Reading the tea leaves, its looking more and more like Morris will be an OSU commit tomorrow. Nothing concrete, but he recently started following OSU 2016 commit Isaac Garcia, and Nemec pisted a comment that a local area coach with a good track record of predicting these things, thinks it will be OSU. Will be nice if Beavs can get their first local commit.

  17. I just finally watched his highlights. It looks like he could be capable of playing multiple positions. If we could tho i think he could be a sabby piscetelli like safety.

  18. I read that Oregon last season got into the tournament with an RPI above 60, finished 6th in the conference (16-14) and won 38-25 overall games? So, what reasonable explaination is there for hole getting in last year, and OSU getting screwed this year?

    OSU 2016 35-19 (16-14) 4th place in Pac12, RPI 44 (First 3 out)

    uo 2015 38-25 (16-14) 6th place in Pac12, RPI 60+ (Last 3 in)

  19. Eggers breaks down some of the facts and political connections here:

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/309382-187089-ncaa-selection-committee-swings-and-misses

“Oregon State had a better overall record than Washington (32-21), won two of three from the Huskies and had a better RPI (45 to 55). OSU had a better overall record than Arizona State (34-21), swept three games from the Sun Devils and were just behind them in RPI (43). The Beavers also won two of three from Utah….

The 10-man selection committee is comprised of nine athletic directors and one administrator — Robert Goodman, the senior associate commissioner from the Colonial Athletic Association. Only one of the ADs is from the West Coast — Scott Sidwell of San Francisco. The others are Erdmann; Shawn Heilbron, Stony Brook; Kevin Anderson, Maryland; Patrick Chun, Florida Atlantic; Mike Bobinski, AD, Georgia Tech; Chris Del Conte, Texas Christian, and Larry Lyons, Illinois State.

Heilbron and Anderson, ironically, are former assistant ADs at Oregon State who applied for the head AD job that was given to Todd Stansbury a year ago.

Each of the country’s regions are represented by an advisory committee that reports to the NCAA selection committee. The West region’s seven-man committee, chaired by Sidwell, has only one member from the Pac-12 — Washington coach Lindsay Meggs.

Meggs, it would seem, did not exactly go to bat for the Beavers.

Oregon State was not the only team to get the hose job. North Carolina finished 34-18 overall and 15-13 in the tough ACC. The Tar Heels swept three from Oklahoma State, beat South Carolina 15-0, William and Mary 17-2 and East Carolina 17-4 and 9-1. Those four schools all made it into the NCAA tourney. “

    • Thanks for the link.
Buried in the article was this from Eggers on injuries, (An aside: Isn’t it time for Oregon State to add an elbow specialist to its sports medicine/training staff?) .
So, a sports psychologist and elbow specialist……..short shopping list highlighted here long ago.

      • Truth be told, our guys need the rest and reflection on the season. They’re tired. I suppose Casey loses out on any bonus attached to the post season. But just one more win in conference, especially against either Nikegon or Wazzu, puts us solidly in the tourney.

A lot of the wonks who follow this team thought this year was going to be a little rough, but we’d still make a late run to show our potential. Next year is supposed to be the year for a serious run. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how the arms heal and who decides to stay for one more year.

      • Elbows are unpredictable. There are no reliable studies that can prove what causes the UCL to tear.

That being said, if they want to hire me as an elbow specialist, I’ll gladly take the pay.

  20. OT: Saw Wayne Tinkle at the golf course yesterday–said Hi. Next time I saw him, I told him to get off my fairway and back to his own.

    • Haven’t watched his film (not a particularly good judge of film anyway), but if a legit 3* it’s good to see the in-state commitment. I would think for a kid growing up in the Willamette Valley, a chance to go somewhere different like Cal would be very tempting. Good to see the coaching staff being the deciding factor.

What are other’s assessment of Morris?

  21. When Utah wins the conference with a losing record and the Beavs finish 3 games back, there’s not a whole lot you can complain about. Beavs had their chances and blew them spectacularly. Lots of really bad baseball and really bad losses.

You can only hope they are very motivated for next year with almost everyone returning.

I think nearly everyone will return too. The only one I think that will have a tough decision will be Logan Ice.

Of the the JRs, only Ice is likely a top 10 round pick.

Way to early predictions next year,
    – Hamilton probably transfers. He’s just the odd man out. Donahue made the most of his opportunity while Hamilton struggled.
    – Only Ice turns pro of the drafted players.
    – Top recruit Grant Gambrell will come to OSU.

    Early lineup prediction
    1B – Gretler
    2B – Madrigal
    SS – Morrison
    3B – Grenier
    LF – Donahue
    CF – Nobach
    RF – Cary
C – Harrison – would increase his draft stock considerably.
    DH – Larnach

    • Well it is obvious that the committee is biased. Regardless of what games the Beavs shoulda, coulda, woulda…..the committee doesn’t follow their own damn criteria. Lots of teams go through skids, but baseball is such a statistically driven game, and more random than other sports. I’ve watched a lot of baseball all over the country, and have seen a lot of undeserving teams win games — just the way it is. I’ve seen guys hit the ball well and hit line drives to the opposing team all game, the other team get five hits and win by 15 runs due to many different factors umpires, errors, weather, bad breaks/good breaks, injuries, field conditions, etc. The Beavs were lucky in some and unlucky in others, most of that stuff evens out in the end — you have to create your own luck. Yes the Beavs had chances, but they had a lot going against them with injuries from the start. Casey got the team in tournament form, and the committee had made its mind up already.
The Beavs played well enough to get in by the committee’s criteria — seeing South Alabama, Nebraska, Washington and Arizona State get in ahead of them proves the committee is biased. The bigger question, how do go on and make sure this doesn’t happen again? The rankings are stacked against West coast teams, and the NCAA committee is biased for South, and Eastern teams. Who can we write to at the PAC12 to get the right attention on this….conflict of interest?

    • “The only one I think that will have a tough decision will be Logan Ice. “
An interesting take. I assumed Ice would have a very easy decision; that it would be a “no brainer” to turn pro.

You’ve got me thinking though. Maybe Ice has a little of the Matt Boyd Moxie in him and this snub by the NCAA will cause him to return. I guess I hope so, his D is a joy to watch and, despite the late slump, he has ability with the bat.

As for the early lineup prediction, where do you see Kwan?

      • That’s the only thing that might keep Ice, to win a title.

Kwan – unless he starts hitting really well, he’s destined to be a pinch hitter and occasional sub. Likely see action in the weekday games.

        • Re: Kwan
I can see him getting more playing time in the not too surprising event that Casey goes back to small ball in a big way. Pitching strength could lead to that.
In any event, next year should be interesting. As Jack (and, I believe, some others have said) next year was more likely to result in Omaha than this. Lots of talent on this team, and now motivation has been pumped.

    • Have to think the Oregon schools are both hurt by turnover at both coordinator positions. Recruits probably want to see Oregon play under a new scheme before they commit. With Oregon State, 10 is about as good as I could have expected at this point.

    • Ya that’s pretty surprising by Colorado. For the most part it’s our lack of commitments which will take care of itself. Hopefully when we do get more some of them will be four stars.

  22. Three of the top writers for D1 went out of their way to explain why OSU should have been in the field of 64. This in a roundtable format where they did not have to say anything at all about teams which didn’t make it in.

Nashville regional judged the softest for the #1 seed (UCSB and UW lacking in the pitching dept.)

    http://www.d1baseball.com/postseason/staff-roundtable-analyzing-field/

And, Canzano up with an interview with Casey, haven’t listened to the podcast yet but the quotes indicate that it will be worthwhile.

    http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian/john_canzano/index.ssf/2016/05/oregon_states_pat_casey_not_la.html#incart_river_index

    • It’s a great podcast. Casey cautiously calls it the way it is. He stands up for his players and discusses what he said to them. Interesting read

      • Per Casey,“Self pity, the first step toward self destruction”………strikes me as very wise; even “angryesque”

  23. My guess at baseball starting lineup next year. This is hoping Ice stays.
    C:Logan Ice
    1B:KJ Harrison
    2B:Trevor Morrison
    SS:Nick Madrigal
    3B:Cadyn Griner
    LF:Christian Donahue
    CF: Kyle Nobach
    RF: Elliot Cary/Jack Anderson
    DH:Cary/Anderson
    Rotation: Friday: Drew Rasmussen
    Saturday: Bryce Fehmel
    Sunday: Luke Hemlich
    Thoughts?

    • I do agree that Anderson will see a lot of playing time.
Still trying to figure how Gretler, Larnach, and Kwan could crack your lineup.

    • Morrison will most likely sign as will Ice.

      That’s moves Donahue to 2b.

Larnach will beat out Anderson for RF.

      Carey will play CF.

      Nobach to RF.

King/Gretler will DH and get some looks at 1B if they move KJ to catcher.

No way Drew is back as a starter next year. Best case scenario is he comes back to pitch in relief at the end of the season, but even that’s unlikely. Don’t believe me? Google Cal Quantrill.

Tweet/Fehmel/Heimlech/Martinek will all compete for weekend rotation spots.

None of this includes another talented freshman class coming in.

    • Seriously doubt Rasmussen will be ready for the start of the season. It’s also entirely possible he doesn’t pitch much next year either. You left out Sam Tweedt. He’ll be ready for the season and likely step into the starting rotation. Fehmel should be in there as well. The last spot of the weekend rotation? Who knows. Maybe we have an incoming freshman that can fill that spot. Or Heimlich? I don’t see Ice sticking around. He seems likely to be drafted in one of the top 10 rounds

    • German kid out of Illinois. Were the only power five offer but a lot of potential. He’s an offensive linemen that travels home to Germany so he doesn’t go to camps and is under exposed.

      • Nephew of these guys.

Pump you up, short clip, audible as opposed to the other …

  24. Love the new commits. Taylor looks very fluid and his NFL roots have me believing he’s going to bring a very professional work ethic to this team. Morris has just the type of fiery, over the top attitude that you hate if he’s on the other team but love if he plays for you and I don’t know much about the lineman but I’ll take a big dude from the Midwest any day.

Momentum is everything in recruiting so hopefully this only builds from here. It’ll be important to secure as many as possible before the games start since I have a feeling the on-field product won’t be winning over many recruits this fall/winter

    • Big dude is from germany, and has been playing for about 6 years. He’s an exchange student, so he played a few years in Germany and I’m not sure what the quality of football is played there but he was smart enough to come to the states to see if he could make it. Sounds like he is going to come back in the fall and play on a prep squad on the east coast for his senior season. He’s good enough to get some offers without being on many teams radars. Ucla and Cal have interest in him also…..so teams are seeing an upside. His tape is good, he’s a little awkward on run plays, but that expected with someone newer to the game (he commented in an article that the german teams aren’t real serious about playing and he hasnt had good coaching there either). Foot work is good, his hands are good, I think he’s a good pickup.

    • Taylor is a bit on the short side, but we’ve had plenty of success with shorter WRs at OSU (Brandin Cooks and James Rodgers come to mind)
In fact, his size compares similarly to Cooks at 5’10” and 190lbs. And when I watch his tape, I actually see a little Cooks in his running style. Compact running style with quick feet. Doesn’t have a long stride, but his legs move so quickly, he’s able to get a good burst and make quick cuts to keep his defenders off balance. I really think we’re going to like Taylor. He still has a season of high school ball to develop and I could see him being rated a 4* guy by the end of his senior year. Sounds like he could also be an early enrollment candidate.

Also, was nice to see his brother Kerry Taylor (former ASU Sun Devil) endorse Kolby’s college choice and say “he made the right choice”.

  25. Looks like it’s been a great day for Beavers recruiting. Let’s hope they continue this, and land some bigger fish, too.

  26. Kolby Taylor is a big catch for us.

Watching Moran’s film last year, one receiver kept sticking out to me over and over again and I told myself “it would be great if we could get that guy.” It was Taylor.

  27. In Miami today…meeting up with a group tonight for flight to Havana tomorrow. Will be able to catch a baseball game among many other offerings, should be interesting.

    Home later in the month.

If anyone is interested in traveling to Cuba I will be happy to answer questions and share the experience upon return. Good way to avoid the CWS! Adios JB

  28. Maybe playing a non-conference series against teams better than USF and Central Arkansas might help the SOS. Not many southern teams want to travel to Corvallis in March – don’t blame them. Pac 12 ought to get some “extra credit” for all the additional travel incurred during the season. Apart from Eugene and Portland, next shortest road trip is Seattle.

Maybe UO and OSU can partner to host an early season round-robin to bring in some better non-conf. teams.

    • Casey has said that he and the team are willing to travel to the east and south in the early season. They simply can’t get any takers.
