Time to move on from that unimpressive win vs Idaho State and focus on Boise State.

Sounds like the Beavs have some key guys out with injury, on an already thin time, which alone spells disaster. The question is how good/bad is Boise this year? For the most part I only watch Beaver games these days, so for those of you who have watched Boise, what are we dealing with?

In the limited game time I saw of WSU @ BSU, I thought BSU looked solid in D

So far this year, OSU WRs don’t seem great at getting separation, and I expect that to be a problem against BSU. Of course WSU didn’t run much, so that’s a little hard to evaluate based on what I saw.

Also, I thought BSU’s Oline blocked pretty well, giving the QB time to make efficient throws and move the chains.

At first glance, it looks to me like OSU weaknesses (Oline play, WR separation, Dline QB pressure) against BSU strengths.

Plus I expect BSU to have more of an attitude and confidence. I don’t expect they will be at all intimated by playing the Beavs at Reser.

In my view, OSU will need to make the “first-to-second-game-jump-in-improvement” they were supposed to make against ISU in order for this matchup to be competitive and watchable.

Angry, I believe we will be looking at a Boise traveling squad of roughly 64 players, with approximately 40-45 playing in the game total (please note that only 11 players are allowed on the field during any one play).

Many (if not all) will be wearing helmets if participating in a particular play.

and now for a Farmer Johns game break…

Hoping for good MBB news tonight!

I watched Boise get dismantled last year by USU. Clune knows Boise and knows how to stop them. The problem comes when we start talking about if we have the depth and skill to do it. Boise lost its entire starting d line from last year to graduation. Their o line is one of their best positions, pretty solid. Qb is good, one really good reciever . Don’t know about the rest of them, but assume they are good. This is a real test for the season I think.

Beavs passing game has issues in every phase: (1) protection (2) receivers getting open (3) accurate throws downfield and (4) catching the ball. This does not bode well for establishing a run game. I really want to see improvement in all 4 of those things… don’t know if it’s possible.

          I thoroughly enjoyed the terrace.

          Pros-

Good beer selection (9-12$ per pint) if you’re into Oregon craft brewing there were several varieties available, including some ciders. I did not check out the wine bar, but saw lots of being consumed.

Food- I had a BBQ nachos (chips, cheese, pulled pork, jalapeños, sour cream). It tasted good, but overpriced for portion size ($11). I also had a philly cheese steak sandwich which was surprisingly excellent (unknown priced it was a gift).

The view was good if you’re near the standing room tables. Endzone seating is what it is, so plan accordingly. It was uncrowded enough that I was able to claim a table with my family and stand and watch most the game. (It is standing only if you don’t have season tickets in that section)

I had tickets in the 2nd level, but received Terrace passes from a give away down town. My cousin holds season tickets in the terrace and at one point some of my family went and sat with him in some unoccupied seats and nooned seemed to care. (I’m sure that’ll change when the stadium isn’t 1/2 empty)

If you have season terrace tickets I’ve been told you get exclusive access to beer and wine tasting, and several times during the game vendors walked around giving away food (generic hotdogs and cookies to people seated in the terrace.

They did not use nets for field goals or PATs, and allow the fans to catch the balls. If you get one, it will quickly be confiscated by security. However, they will provide you with a souvenir ball in exchange. It’s pretty cool, and saw several little kids get gifted balls and you could tell it made their day.

All in all, I thought it was actually pretty awesome. I could see it not being as fun if it were super croweded. I know they only give away so many passes, and I’m not sure how full it was compaired to how full it could be.

Side note, Waybe Tinkle was there and he seems like he is legitimately a nice person. I didn’t contact him, but watched several people walk up and talk to him, and you’d think he personally knew each one with the way he talked and interacted with them (may have idk) haha.

Overall 9/10 would go again, but could easily see it not being as fun if it were packed.

$9 per pint..wow. Just like major league baseball…

While the architecture and look is disappointing, I am glad you had a positive experience and report. Hopefully the players will really enjoy the locker room, and the fans the experience on the terrace.

            Thanks for the report.

I like the idea of the whole thing. While baseball and football are different experiences, having a beer at Banners and watching a game is great… Sounds like they may have actually pulled it off at Reser as well.

Not sure I’m digging the pricing on food and drink, but it would definitely keep consumption to manageable levels.

It’s going to come down to how effective the Beav’s running game is. If they can’t run the ball on BSU, it’s going to be a long day.

BSU is not going to make a lot of mistakes so the Beavs have to go out and take the game from them. They could count of the Idaho St qb to bail them out a bunch. Won’t be the case vs Rypien even though he threw three picks last game.

This will be just like Minnesota….come down to turnover battle is difference in game. I live in Boise, so been seeing them quite a bit on local news. It could be worse with Beavs being banged up at key positions and BSU having extra week to prepare, their offense is solid and defense plays disciplined. So if our defense can hold them below 23points, Beavs have a chance. BSU 34 Beavs 24.

I want to give a shout out to the new guy doing kickoffs. His kicks were excellent. Keep Owens for FG and PAT but the ability to reliably put a ball in the corner or out of the end zone is a big deal.

Jalen Moore is listed as out for the first half-suspension. I thought Parker was worried about two players who might be suspended for targeting upon review by the PAC after Saturday, was he one of them?? Sorry, but I was unable to give full attention to the broadcast.

Also, Sean Harlow and LaMone Williams are both old news, right?

So, maybe not “twice as many injuries”, but Beavs still are lacking depth as compared to BSU (or many others!).

      BTW, thanks for the link.

Wow, that puts a whole different perspective on the O-line at Oregon State. Still doesn’t excuse the fact that we haven’t helped them out any by going out and getting more O-line to create depth as well as DL to get more depth on that side of the ball as well. I wonder if GA is rebuilding within 3-4 years and knows that the last positions to recruit for are the Line on both sides of the ball? If you look at how we’ve recruited last year and this year:

WR, RB, QB, CB, S, CB, LB and a few DL sprinkled in there too, but mainly the outer positions. Perhaps he’s waiting to go JUCO to find the depth we need on both sides of the ball? That would make more sense in my mind to go get JUCO when the skill positions have the depth we need to compete. No sense in trying to bring in JUCO players if we aren’t relevant or deep in the skill positions.

Lineman are an interesting dynamic. You want big/athletic guys there, but if you go JUCO, you have to pitch them that they’re coming to play for you will elevate the team because we’re lacking in that position, whereas skill players like QB, WR, CB, S, LB will shine better than the guys in the trenches if it’s not a strong unit as a whole.

Against the cougs, 2/3 of Boise St receiving yards came from two players. And essentially all of their rushing yards came from one player. So if we can focus on shutting down Sperbeck and their RB McNichols, maybe we can seriously hinder them.

Thats what I would focus on to start. Make someone else beat us.

Looks like we will be their toughest road game this year! Go beavs!

    PHIL STEELE REPORT:

    Boise State (Offense: 47 / Defense: 48 / Special Teams: 88) – Game Grade Average 93.5 (#21)

The last meeting between these schools took place in the 2013 Hawaii bowl. Oregon State is in
high spirits after snapping their 10 gm losing streak last week, but those happy thoughts
won’t last long. Boise State enters this game fresh off a bye and have the edge on both sides
of the ball. The Bronco’s are avg 502 yards per game, but the Beavers did hold Minnesota to a season low 280 yards in their matchup. Boise State has already proven they can go on the road and win this year, & I’ll call for the Broncos to win by over 2 TD’s.

There wasn’t one. He does not write up analysis for games between FBS vs FCS teams although he does analyze every team in both divisions.

It is worth noting that on his team pages, however, that Oregon State received a grade of 83.8 for their performance against Minnesota, and only received a game grade of 63.9 for the win against Idaho State.

I would venture that most of you probably agree that overall the Beavers played better in the first game but with a more disappointing result while they seemed to be less inspiring last Saturday despite winning by 30.
