Ethan Thompson Commits

Worthy of it’s own thread since he’s the highest signing (top 50) since the services have began.

Nelson had more offers, I believe, and Nelson also had a higher ESPN rating at 92, but a lot of that can depend on the strength of overall recruiting that particular year.

Either way, huge get, and I expect the “Is it basketball season yet?” talk soon as we get Boise then enter the Pac-12 schedule. Basketball and baseball should help ease the GA transitional years. Think about that, because it’s real and important, and it shows the importance of being good in the big 3 sports (i.e. People will have a lot more patience with GA if they’re watching the other sports dominate).

    • I don’t necessarily disagree. Thompson looks like a more well rounded player (i.e. defense), and based strictly on the ranking he is higher.

      • I meant in terms of recruiting it was better because of the factors. Not that Nelson was better at basketball than Thompson.

Thompson is a great pickup. Now he becomes the best recruiter for the team. It’s why Negron is interested.

  1. “People will have a lot more patience with GA if they’re watching the other sports dominate”

Not just the big 3, even WBB can have that effect, makes many fans more proud to be “part” of Beaver Sports.

  2. Success begets success. Get some good players by hook or by crook. Win some games. Get to the dance. Get more good players. Win more games …

  3. So, in what, 2018-19 we’ll really see the “Year of the Beaver,” where men’s basketball is one of the top Pac programs? Or do people expect results sooner?

    • It would make sense to utilize facilities for any practicable uses. Go to the daily time lapse for the 17th to see the set-up and flow patterns for game day.

Are we still partnered with Cornell on the school for hospitality and guest services?

  4. Some interesting remarks from Andersen in yesterday’s presser:

It sounds like Andersen knows the Oline isn’t going to be reliable in the run game, and the offense needs to find some other way to score points in the interim.

I am beginning to think some of Nall’s tentativeness may be a lack of trust in the OLine.

Also like Andersen’s idea that playing BSU is anti-strategic from a recruiting standpoint. Play other teams in regions you recruit (e.g. FLA) so you can sell recruits on the game. It will be interesting if this starts affecting scheduling before Andersen leaves (he’s never stayed anywhere long).

BSU has some experience recently whipping both the OSU D and O Coordinators head to head.

“You have to beat Boise, they’re not going to beat themselves.” Likely true, and an important step for OSU at this stage of its development.

Finally, like his notion that beating a solid team like BSU is a good thing and one to celebrate, but don’t act like you won the superbowl.

  5. OT-

Hole’s Devon Allen out the rest of the year after hearing his ACL. That’s two now, both knees. He came back from the other one but if he manages to come back from this one he should probably hang it up and focus on track.

    • Something that was probably missed or glossed over but the WBB has a commitment from Aleah Goodman from La Salle HS.

Legit 4 star player. Ranked #63 overall.

But the big get would be Evina Westbrook. OSU legacy. Consensus top 10 player. Has OSU in her top 5 (OSU, Tennessee, Notre Dame, South Carolina and USC). Former teammate of McWilliams and AAU teammate of Goodman. Rueck is going head to head for recruits with the big time programs now.

  6. Fun facts from the Idaho Statesman:

“All-time series: Oregon State leads, 5-3: 2013 (OSU def. BSU, 38-23 in Hawaii Bowl), 2010 (BSU def. OSU, 37-24), 2006 (BSU def. OSU, 42-14), 2005 (OSU def. BSU 27-30), 2004 (BSU def. OSU 53-34), 2003 (OSU def. BSU, 26-24), 1989 (OSU def. BSU, 37-30), 1986 (OSU def. BSU, 34-3)

Years as FBS-level program: BSU (21), OSU (99)

    Bowl appearances: BSU 16 (11-5); OSU 15 (9-6)

Number of times ranked in the AP Poll and highest ranking, according to Sports-Reference.com: BSU — 127 weeks ranked (high of No. 2 in 2010); OSU — 95 weeks ranked (high of No. 4 in 2000)

Did you know? Since their last meeting in 2013, Boise State has more wins over Pac-12 opponents (3; Arizona, Washington and Washington State) than Oregon State (2; Colorado and Arizona State).”

    And from another article:

“There’s no doubt the Broncos have earned the Pac-12’s respect, going 9-3 against the conference since 2006, winning their last three meetings against the league.

…Need more motivation? The Broncos have never beaten the Beavers in four meetings outside of Boise, including an 0-3 mark at Reser Stadium in Corvallis.

“They obviously have our number, we haven’t beat them. … We’re going to emphasize that all week, we’ve got to understand we’re going into a place we’ve never won at,” Yakoo said

    • I’m pretty sure I drove by kearsleys girlfriends wreck right as the paramedics were showing up, . Now we know what was going on with him during fall camp. Hope she recovers.

      • That is rough. It said he found out about his girlfriend when a friend sent him a picture of the wreck. I can’t even imagine what he has been through. New respect for him in helping his girlfriend on the road to recovery from the accident.

    • Holy shit balls. I read it and guess I didn’t realize how much depth the O line has lost for so many reasons. Hopefully everyone recovers from injury, illness, disease or personal tragedy and moves on for a long, happy and healthy life.

      Luck O da beavs

  7. Speaking of the O-line, Gina reports Kearsley ran with the ones today. Certainly worth a try given the performance of that group so far.

EDIT: THIS JUST IN, Danny reports that Yanni and Titus Failauga are both “probable” for Boise.

  8. Anybody have a Wall Street Journal account? Apparently we are embarrassing and weaklings.

  9. Eggers with more on the OLine, including Kearsly starting at center this Saturday. Other interesting bits:

    Pierce has solidified himself as the #2 RB;

Andersen would be open to scheduling 2 road/1 home game series with SE “power schools;”

Bolden’s inability to reliably catch punts “petrifies” Andersen so expect to see Dockery or Bradford returning punts v. BSU.

    • Well that settles the identity thing. He has a clear vision of what he wants from this team. And he’s pretty candid about personnel and numbers.

Kearsley will start. How can he not? The run blocking actually looked like run blocking with him playing. Andrews saw what he was doing and started bull rushing his man into the secondary. His tendency to set up like an OT at G was just funky to watch… and probably why he would be mentioned as the likeliest to be replaced if Kearsley takes C, which he will. If Yanni’s that good, then maybe taking snap and line call duties from him are all that’s needed to make his game simple.

Dockery should be a return specialist and a DB. And he should lose 10 pounds. The job description for a gauntlet runner doesn’t require extra size. Either you get broken, or you don’t. And it’s more likely you don’t get broken if you have more ability to get out of the way because you’re not carrying extra weight.

I’m surprised Yanni isn’t called for holding every other play. I think he must look good in practice, when they play at 3/4 speed. He always seems to be a step behind in game speed.

      • Some favored developing Yanni as the foundation at C for years to come. So far his performance shows that to be a poor tradeoff; the risk to (and decreased performance of) Garrettson and Nall isn’t worth developing a C for the future when Kearsley is available now.

I agree with you. Take the snap and line call duties off his back now and let him get experience at G; he’ll then have a better chance of becoming a decent center.

BTW, miss your old avatar. Now about those pick’em results……

        • My primary email is getting kicked to spam, I believe.

Pierce looked nice running off Kearsley’s line. So I’m thinking Nall might also benefit. The jump cuts have to go. He just needs to pound on the other team until they give up. I’ve seen him do it. Pierce is a nice change of pace because he’s essentially the same type of runner, but he’s smaller, quicker and faster. If that line can condition themselves to block for a moose like Nall, they can open holes for Pierce.

          • Yanni was a Riley reach as a recruit. I doubt he will ever be a great player. He should be a backup this year for sure. Hopefully he developes.

      • Andersen says he wants “an offense that’s productive, whatever that means.”

Until they can get a line that has depth and can block consistently, and TE depth, it almost looks like OSU should go kind of run-and-shoot with quick throws and a single back who can get yards because of the spacing that’s created. Not what I want for them long term, but Garretson needs to get the ball out quick or he’s not going to survive the season and guys like Villamin and Collins should be good for slants with their height/quickness.

        • And quick flares as well. Garretson had some plays where he just stood in the same place for a day and a half. And when he does get the safeties up, he misses his shots. I keep thinking Seth in the wildcat is going to be one of those shots. I think that would open up his whole game.

  10. Weren’t we just talking about this the other day:

Oregon State has a home-and-home series against Boise State scheduled for 2022 and ’23, but Andersen would prefer that not to be the case. The second-year OSU head man wants to schedule nonconference opponents out of the region. “We would like to get into a place where we recruit more,” Andersen says. “Maybe it’s bringing a team in here from Texas or Florida or Georgia, where it’s tied more into our recruiting base.”

    • We’ve talked about strategically scheduling home and homes in recruiting hotbeds before. The recent discussion was about scheduling body bag games. Being positive for the former can lead to passively being against the latter. TCU doesn’t want to schedule a home and home? Fine. We’ll play SMU. Florida State is too good to visit our beautiful campus and state? I hear FIU’s stadium is pretty cool. Maybe we’ll go visit them instead.

      • GA is contradicting himself a bit. Prior to the Rodent Bowl, he was complaining about flying east to play games. Now he wants to go to FL and GA? I get the recruiting angle, but that is a whole lot longer flight than Minneapolis. Definite weather disadvantage for da Beav’s going to the steam bath of the SE in early Sept.

As an aside, there are rumbling that the B1G is looking to go to ten conference games to balance out the home/ away disparity with the nine game schedule. When will the wussy SEC even go to nine games?

  11. “Basketball and baseball should help ease the GA transitional years.”

During most of the 28 years in the football desert we spent basking in Ralph Miller’s success. This is a familiar position for long time beaver fans.

  12. According to the official PK80 Invitational site “Sixteen college teams will participate in what will be the best collection of college basketball teams in one event, at a single site, in the history of the sport.”…
that are sponsored by Nike. I think this is another big reason why Stanford was chosen over UCLA. As we all know UCLA is sponsored by Adidas. I looked into all the teams chosen and they are all sponsored by PK and Nike. Could just be a coincidence hahaha

  13. What channel is the football game on? My site tells me fs1 but it did that last week and then at the last second it said pac 12 so i had to drive to go find it. I just want to check and make sure with u guys.

  14. OT
but how much does a highly rated O coordinator cost?

But what I don know is the BSU game is buy one get one free.

Problem is I have season tickets so I already have two. So do I get a refund then?

  15. OT shout out to Tigers Matt Boyd, who has been their best STARTER since the All-Star (minus one bad start). He had everything working last night. He gave into one hitter in the 7th after a few 3-2 pitches were fouled off and lead to a solo shot. At one point retired 14 straight.
    8IP 3H 1ER 1BB 7K

  16. I thought Stansbury did a good job in the changes we did see. Most were in good directions for OSU. Massari is OK and might be interesting to see what Casey had in mind but I am not sure either is the best we could do. Need vision, innovation, and someone who will have a clear stamp on OSU Athletics to have us nationally relevant and interesting so the Oregon State brand enters the Renaissance it feels like we could potentially be on the cusp of.

  17. I want a AD who will shake things up some. Someone who will be doing things that make people really want to choose Oregon State over Oregon both in this state and as fans across the country. How about a campaign with Haystock Rock, Multnomah Falls, Crater Lake and Mt Hood that make us cone off as this state’s natural team with our identity.

Football has to be a huge focus. Committment to get back to a Rose Bowl again. No holds barred. Basketball to be expected to make NCAA Tourney regularly in men’s and deep runs in women’s. Someone with a undeniable urge for OSU to win and win with confidence & make OSU recognized as a a rising brand ready to take the stage and earn a Rose Bowl in football and a Sweet 16 in Men’s hoops.

  18. Not sure what the qualities the new AD should have. The major sports don’t have any coaching vacancies. Biggest current issue is getting people to attend events. The only facility needing some upgrades (Gill) is getting a few. There aren’t any sports that are really needing brand new facilities.

SQUAD was/is a really good idea. Get younger people to come and earn loyalty.

Donor outreach could be a little better. Building up the donor base. Even with small amounts like $20 a year.

      • Yes, Reser does need upgrades, but the next overhaul will be the biggest and hardest they’ve done yet, that’s why it’s last. The “mirror image” from what I’ve heard won’t be a true mirror. They can’t build the 4 brick pillars like they did for the 2004-2005 renovation because people gain access on the ground level on the backside of the West grand stand(that’s what it is).

There will be more Loge spaces in this renovation and less suite levels and will be primarily media and coaches in the sky/press box with a few suite levels on the sides for AD. Once it’s renovated, the question is, where do you move all of your season ticket holders and what packages do you give them to assure they are going to have the same section/seats on that side.
