Why Doesn’t McMaryion Get a Shot?

242
  1. He almost beat the Ducks.
  2. He’s looked competent in every game he’s played.
  3. The current QBs are all terrible.
  4. He’s very smart and as mobile as Garrettson. Best accuracy of all the QBs.
  5. GA knows nothing about QBs, so might as well pull a George Costanza and do the opposite.

All I can come up with is racism. Just saying…

  1. Racism? I think that’s a pretty big reach when you consider most of our starters and a number of our coaches, are not white.

I’d like to see him play too, but he’ll probably get put in at some point when the Beavers are down 20 and backed up at their own 5 yard line.

  2. My recollection of McMaryion’s play was it appeared to me that he wasn’t getting the coaching he needed in order to improve. In fact I found myself thinking he was getting worse instead of better and that “coaching” was the cause.

  3. 1. He wasn’t the reason we almost beat the Ducks. Yes, he didn’t get in the way of everything like Collins and Mitchell had before they were benched in previous games, but his 150 yard performance in the Civil War against that terrible defense hardly qualifies him to be a Pac-12 starter.
    2. He looked okay in garbage time against UW last year, but other than that….?
    3. Agreed, not seeing much potential from those that have played.
    4. 40% accuracy last season (though up to 50% for the end of UW and Oregon, but still not a selling point)
    5. If this is what we believe, then Andersen needs to go. Oregon showed last year how much of a difference competent QB play makes on a team’s success.

    • OT: Speaking of almost beating the ducks, any thoughts on what is going on with Nall? Blame his season on the O-line?
But Pierce has looked good with the same O-line, really expected a 1-2 punch from those guys.
Any reason to expect the newly revamped O-line to show marked improvement this week, you know, the old “most improvement comes between game 1 and 2” thing?

      • The O-line bears some responsibility. But there has been zero consistency on that unit in even the simplest terms, like who can even dress for any one game.

Nall has also been needlessly skeptical of what he does see instead of being fearless and taking what he’s given plus a little. Pierce is naturally faster, so he can make it to the spots he sees more easily. But he also doesn’t jump cut until he has a head of steam. That keeps him moving downhill, where Nall sidesteps in the backfield instead, moving laterally.

If either of the two can rely on momentum, it should be Nall.

  4. Is anyone else as concerned as me that we do not have a permanent AD right now? I feel like the entire program is just floating in space aimlessly with no direction.

I thought it was interesting they made Vydra the interim AD over Massari.

  5. I expect that Garretson will get the next start; but with perhaps an even shorter hook than we saw in Boulder. He got one half vs. Boise, and a quarter and a half vs. Colorado. If he doesn’t click vs. Cal then I expect we’ll see Blount even earlier; maybe one or two possessions in. Now, if Blount should prove ineffective again, then we might see McMaryon late in the Cal game and probably a starter vs. Utah.

    • And, as the first two posts said, he’ll likely come in with the team down 20, backed up to their own 5 yd line with a high risk play call.

  6. It doesn’t matter who plays QB at this point, the team’s shortcomings are multiple and ongoing. McMaryion looked serviceable against the Quackies because they had (and continue to have) the one of the shittiest Power 5 defenses. One just can’t use that game as any kind of benchmark. Do you replace the receivers because they can’t get separation, do you replace the O-Line because they can’t pass protect? Go with whoever has the most talent, is the most coachable and will actually be a factor when they are a junior or senior.

  7. Just read this from Canzano, which is an interesting development to watch…

Don’t know if you could see this on TV, but I closely watched Oregon State starting quarterback Darell Garretson on the sidelines during the game on Saturday. He and back-up Conor Blount had very limited contact with each other. They stood on opposite ends of the sideline most times when the Beavers were on defense. I never saw a ‘high-five’ or a discussion between them on the sideline. Keep an eye on that. Icy.

Doesn’t seem like a leader to me.

    • Neither is the answer so this is all noise.

GA needs to find a QB, and Willard is not the answer. Moran offers some hope. McMaryion is better than Garrettson and likely better than Blount, yet GA won’t play him. That’s the issue not some “icy” situation between two scrubs on the sideline.

      • Definitely agree they’re not the answer and there is more to it, but it’s not a good look when the current “leaders” aren’t communicating. Seems as though GA has lost the sideline.

        • I saw that too. Did anyone other than JC see the “ice”? Could be click bait. If true though, losing the sideline wouldn’t be a total surprise.

          • He had Joey 5 picks on his show last night and asked him if it was a issue and joey said no, they aren’t really going to be buddies when they are in the midst of battling for each other’s job.

  8. I seem to remember McMaryion having really shaky decision making. All of our QBs look rough but McMaryion held the ball and threw inadvisable passes. Being bad at the position is one thing, doing those two things is even worse.

    • He struggled with accuracy on the deep ball in college. His players were just so open it didn’t matter. Also struggled with the corner and deep out. Have to be able to hit those in the NFL. He is inconsistent at it. That said, hard to evaluate a guy who isn’t being allowed to run and has an awful offensive line.

      • besides which, that division he plays in is not only the most obscure in the NFL it’s the most obscure in pro sports–counting the NHL.

  9. I’m having flashbacks to Joe Avezzano. When your punter is your best weapon, you have issues.
Expected the team to still lose this year, but play much better. That’s not happening. A depressing display yesterday.

  10. I don’t think it’s racism, I just think it’s starting to become apparent that there isn’t a good option at QB. I would NOT use the “McMaryion looked good against the Ducks” argument as a positive. Have you seen Oregon’s defense? I think we may have been fooled a bit at the last Civil War about how far along our offense was because it seems painstakingly clear now that the Ducks’ defense isn’t able to stop a cold.

  11. the fact that race is even brought up is a reflection of sad souls. this is football. not about race or any other social issue. angry is just mad that nebraska is undefeated.

  12. i do want to say thanks to angry that he only bans me temporarily. says something about a person that has that capacity. it is in short supply in todays ‘merica.

  13. I’m confused. Hasn’t everyone here seen the same crappy o-line play and the lack of separation our receivers are getting. Do you guys really think we have a QB on our roster who can win games with the shit show going on around them? It doesn’t make sense to keep going down the roster trying to find a miracle QB. The more the coaches do that the more instability that will occur in the team.

    • Doozel, did you watch the Colorado game. Garretson had plenty of time, and there were many times when the receiver had separation but the ball was over thrown.

      • Yeah, I was at the game, and I saw Garretson over-throw every pass beyond 7 yards. I also saw Blount (the #2 QB on our roster come in and throw 2 picks). I wouldn’t say they had plenty of time, especially when compared to the CU QB.

        • Yeah that’s all relative, but the fact is he had enough time for the receiver to run his route, get separation, recognize that separation and throw the ball. Problem is that they can’t make the throw.

  14. McMaryion is nowhere near as accurate as Garretson or Blount at this point. Plus, he’s a big pants pooper when playing during actual meaningful game time.

  15. nice that Steven Nelson gave a mention to Oregon State during his NBC introduction. Of course, Roethlisberger has torched his team but that’s someone else’s worry.

  16. None of the current QBs will be a difference maker.

It’s laughable that anyone thinks McMaryion has looked even ok. A 40% completion percentage last year is good?

  17. Amway Coaches Poll out, has Buffs at #23 and Broncs at #19.
Hey, don’t believe your lyin’ eyes, our Beavs aren’t so bad after all……………ummm I wish!

  18. Quite the dumpster fire the team has going here.

Really shows how much GA has mismanaged the QB situation.

Lack of recruiting a big time QB is really hurting the rebuilding timeline. He’s two years away from landing one. Basically all are gone for the 2017 class.

Only hope is landing a transfer or get lucky with a JUCO.

      • Willard’s completion % is so low. Someone needs to find out why. If he can’t complete passes why are we recruiting him? Why can’t we recruit a guy who completes passes? austin kafentzis was the best looking prospect GA recruited but he wouldn’t bite the bullet and guarantee the job.

        • By way of example, Tim Alexander went from 36% to 48% completion from the last year of pettibone to the first year of Riley. I’d say its system.

        • >Willard’s completion % is so low. Someone needs to find out why.

They run a Veer offense and Veer QBs tend to have a really low completion percentage. Also, his high school is pretty bad, I’m not sure there’s much receiving talent there. Allegedly, he throws well in 7 on 7, so I guess they figure he’s a high reward guy if he pans out.

I’m not convinced either, but I don’t think it’s a guarantee that he’ll be bad.

  19. To compare: Nebby’s opponents’ combined record: 9-15. No one at or over .500 except for Wyoming, who has victories over Colorado State, UC Davis, and a 1-4 Northern Illinois team. Oh, and Riley’s played every game at home except for one against Northwestern.

Methinks TPB be in for a rude awakening later this year.

    • I stated in a previous thread children of the corn’s sked set up nicely for a 7-0 start. Only to come crashing back to earth at the end of October/first of November

      10/29 Wisconsin in Madison
11/05 tOSU at the big horseshoe

They finish at Iowa but that one isn’t looking so out of the ordinary right now. They’ll probably win at least 9 games this year and may very well play in the B1G title game (I’d have to check Wisky’s schedule). The get a big miss by not playing the Harbaugh’s this year. And all will be well in Lincoln thinking they’ll contend next year. But we all know. Crash, thud, boom.

And as stated earlier by others, they’ll lose one head scratcher this year. I’ll bite and say it happens this weekend at Indiana

      • Indiana is an interesting team. Wilson is a great offensive coach and they are actually playing D this year a bit. Field goal kicker totally sucks and almost cost them last weekend against Sparty.

      • I would have also said Indiana at the beginning of the year. But circumstance lines up in favor of NU yet again since Indiana showed this last weekend that they can’t be taken lightly. NU gets to learn from MSU’s mistake… while on a bye.

whiskey’s correct. As bad as we are this year, we stand a good chance of going 6-1 or even 7-0 with NU’s schedule (with the loss not coming against Nikegon). If you handicap their games, @ Indiana after a bye is their fourth toughest game of the year.

It looks like tOSU, Mich and Wiscy are the elites this year. Then there are MSU, PSU, Mary, Minny, NU, Indiana and Iowa in the middle. And I’m thinking Iowa might not rise to that level this year. One or two of those teams have schedules that line up great, and they will have bloated records because of it. NU is one of them. The elites they do play are away, wasting no time on guaranteed losses at home. And their other three road games are at NW, Indy and Iowa.

I can see NU losing at least two for sure. Iowa is a question mark right now. They took the NDSU loss poorly. Get over it. It’s what NDSU does. They could put themselves back together and beat the middle level teams in the B1G just for the sake of their pride. And they can pick off Wiscy or Mich at home. If they do that, then their end of the season roll would be too much for a visiting NU. Then there’s Minny and Mary at home. One of those could easily bite a Riley team in the ass. More specifically, one would unexpectedly manhandle a Banker D that showed signs of promise in back to back losses against the big boys.

Here’s the thing. Wiscy’s schedule sucks now that they have a loss. They could easily end up with three losses (one mystery game) while still pummeling NU. If NU makes it to 10-2, they would then play in the B1G championship, where they would get pummeled. And with the Fiesta and Peach being the playoff bowls they would then get to represent the B1G in the Rose Bowl, where they would proceed to get pummeled once again.

And that 10-4 season would be the pinnacle of Mike Riley’s career. Then you would see him go through his three year cycles of the playbook being too hard to understand, and maybe in 2019 his two loss team might again make a numbers push to get to the B1G CG… and fail.

I think that’s best case for Riley.

  20. Isaiah Hodgkins who decomitted from WSU to open up his recruiting, and liked OSU, was super impressed by his Nebraska visit. Riley looks like he is stealing a nice 4* from GA. Can’t say I am surprised. Look up the tweet from Isaiah. Points at Riley like he the man and Riley has a huge sheepish grin knowing he may just be taking a gem from his old school.

  21. The biggest problem is the QBs. He brought in Garrettson, who can throw better than Collins, but not by much.

Then in the pipeline he has Blount, Willard, and Moran. Willard has a nasty completion % in HS. Not a good sign. Moran had a 60+ % and is the highest rated of the QBs, but apparently he’s throwing a lot of INTs in practice and also had 10 (to 22TDs, so a 2:1 ration) in HS. That’s not good, and especially troubling since he played with some of the best skill players (top 5WR) in HS.

Meanwhile, GA ditched that QB, Davy Moore (no clue if he was good but he was fairly highly regarded), and then let kafentzis get away. kafentzis destroyed every Utah record for a QB and was a 4-star on many sites. Gotta get that guy at any cost, yet GA wouldn’t guarantee him the job (yet rumor was that he guaranteed Collins the job to land him late). It’s just bad…the QB situation. I wrote early on in 2015 that the one way GA fails is if he doesn’t find a QB, and now we’re into the 3rd recruiting cycle and he might have 1 in Moran, but even he’s iffy, and he’s bombing that position again on the recruiting trail this cycle. We need to take another QB and he has to be a high quality player who is ready to go now. Go to the JC ranks if necessary. We see what bad QB play has done to the Ducks…GA can harp on D all he wants, but the game starts and ends with efficient QB play.

    • Kafentzis doesn’t seem to be all he was cracked up to be. In 1 years he transferred from Wisky to Nevada. In year 2 he dropped out of Nevada and is now at JC Arizona Western. Not even the starter there yet.

Moore is a Freshman at Memphis. TBD

      • Kafentzis dropped out of Nevada because the OC changed, and he made a bad decision in going to WI. It’s not right to say he’s a failure since decisions/circumstance rather than ability are at play right now. If he plays and stinks that’s when you can say he’s a failure. I remember guys were telling me Trosin was a failure because he moved around a lot and his career didn’t start until year 3 or so, but when he finally played he put up video game numbers.

    • Can’t just keep throwing guys in there. He needs to invest in one or two and live with it for now. If he puts Moran in this year or next year, that’s means all the QBs were put in as freshman except for Garretson. Not great for those guys who need time to develop.

I think he should just stick with Garretson for the rest of the year and hope he gets better. The rest of the guys are going to do no better so might as well stick with him. The payoff might be next year.

    • The game starts and ends with OLine play and he’s whiffed on lineman as much if not more than he has on QBs. Getting a 4-star QB won’t matter if he’s out injured by week 4 every season

    • He’s had how many full recruiting cycles? Pretty sure just one full class…. I would argue QB is not the biggest need by any stretch, to me it’s the o-line… I don’t care what QB you have, without a line they can look remarkably worse… Plus when you look at the Ucks, they spent of ton of recruiting time landing 4 and 5 star QB’s who have never played a down… OSU lucked out not getting AK so I don’t see what your point is there angry…. Apparently angry believes that you can have the worse team ever but if you have a great QB you’ll win… Couldn’t be further from the truth

      • the two above posts by beavlover69 and Chuck the mouth are spot on. Games are won and lost in the trenches. Beavs biggest recruiting need? Look at those positions.

        • Eh, to a degree yes, for the run game and stopping the run. Pass protection is much easier, plus you can use a TE or RB to help. You can have a good passing game with a mediocre, or even bad, line. You can’t have a good run game with that type of line. Skilled QBs constantly get bad with bad lines on all levels of football.

          • Eh, to a degree. No. What’s the excuse for Remmers? If you’ve got a shitty O line man that sucks at pass blocking on your QB’s blind side? We saw that in the Minnesota game right? Led to two fumbles by Garretson. Did you forget the Alamo bowl where one DE for Texas had like 5 sacks against him? You can bring in a guy to TRY and block for extra pass protection but if that TE or RB is mediocre at that task? You also lose a potential receiver. Did you also forget that Togiai is out? He’s a TE right? Who are the other reliable TE’s? C’mon Angry. This train wreck has more going wrong than going right. Is some of the onus on the QB? Absolutely! But not all of it is. You said it yourself after the Minnesota game. The Minny QB was awful. All he did was be a game manager behind a great O line. Right now, that is what this team needs. But we don’t have either.

          • Remmers sucks.

Garrettson held onto the ball too long vs MN. Put a clock on that and see. At least one fumble was on him. The Oline rots, but a good QB would get by with it.

Yeah, if you have a great Oline you only need a game manager, but that requires 5 great players and 2 years of beefing up, whereas recruiting a great QB is just 1 player. A great QB is a quicker path.

          • You’re not the only one that stated one of those fumbles in the Minnesota game was on Garretson. Go back and read one of my posts from that postgame. I said the same thing. Add to the fire a D line that gets minimal to zero pressure on an opposing QB and you get the shit show we are currently suffering thru. Yes you have to have an offense to take the pressure off your defense but if your defense goes ole every time the opponent’s offense has the ball? The beavs stopped CU with a 3 and out the first time they had the ball on Saturday. Had not happened all year to the Buffs. Luck? Remains to be seen.

At some point I contend that they will get it and put this thing together. There’s always that a-ha moment. The questions is when will it be?????

  22. OLine huh? So Garrettson is bad because of the Oline, yet McMaryion is bad because he’s just bad?
    Okay…

I saw more out of McMaryion by far. I’d like to see him play a few full games. He lacks confidence, but he has the skills, so if he can play a few games to actually find his confidence he could be good.

Garrettson is GA’s boy, so nepotism is winning out over ability.

    • You want mcmarion to build confidence but how can he when he’s running for his life? The dude had the deer in the headlights look 24/7. And you could honestly make the argument that the ducks D was the worst defense we played all year minus (maybe) San Jose State. The whole offense looked good against the ducks that doesn’t make our offense any good. We need QBs, I totally agree but the biggest problem is still OLine IMO

      • > I totally agree but the biggest problem is still OLine IMO

Yep, as always; line play wins games. We need better line play on both sides of the ball. I think defense will get there with the class we brought in last year, but the offensive like needs an impact player or two.

  23. >I saw more out of McMaryion by far.

Considering how much you like to hype completion percentage, I don’t understand what you like about McMaryion, other than you trying to be an iconoclast. He was bad last year, completed 40% of his passes. Blount and Garretson are at around 55% this year.

Perhaps he’s improved year over year, but I see no evidence that he’s some sort of savior for a bad team like we have.

  24. Riddle me this: how did our offense suck eggs last year behind Mitchell and seumalo? Would garretson have been any better last year?

        • I believe they were a lot better last year…. Garreston would have done well, look at him at USU, he can be effective… judging him on this season after losing 6 lineman most of which would have been starting is pretty ridiculous… He actually looked pretty good this season until he was getting smashed every play… hard to set your feet when you know what is coming afterwards… It makes a huge difference… angry saying pass blocking is the easier of the two, you are right… that just shows how shitty this oline really is

          • And many of those hits come from an unblocked blindside. He’s been pretty durable imo. He’s constantly getting drilled from the opposite direction he’s looking to make a play towards.

  25. Anyone have any real information about how much altitude affects ball travel? It certainly looked like our kicks were going a bit further. I’m curious to know if that had any influence on Garretson’s over-throws on the longer passes. But I think I recall him having that issue in previous games also. Was just hoping it was an anomaly.

  26. IMO: everyone should have a kid or some other major life changing event that takes your mind off of Beaver football, because It’s going to be another year to 2 before we’re good or even competitive again. Maybe we’ll be competitive next year, but the O line has to come a long ass way.

I’ve disconnected a bit because life has gotten so busy and my Saturday frustrations are almost gone!

I highly suggest watching the Pac 12 replay version of the game that edits out all game breaks and cuts it down to 60 minutes of action. Fantastic way to watch the game after the fam has gone to bed.

Just keep telling yourself that we’re a baseball/basketball school, and closely monitor all your duck friends on Facebook spiraling out of control, and it will all be ok.

  27. Saw on Twitter that Garrett Owens was making fun of Bright U’s gap between his teeth comparing them to a FG post…didn’t come off as funny, especially when the team is getting beat each and every weekend. Hoping these dudes are close enough to jab each other; otherwise, this creates a rift that the team doesn’t need.

  28. You guys see the holes v. Fusky line opened up at -6.5 and is now up to only -8.0. Who wants to take out a second mortgage with me and double up on these fools!

  29. Anyone that would compare Helfrich to Riley is a complete fool. Riley worked for everything he has got. Oh, by the way, Nebraska is undefeated.

  30. Here’s a Phil Steele game grade update on all FBS teams
I sorted each conference by total average as well.
This does NOT just take into account final record but the gameplay on the field as well, as well as the opponent, the venue, and the expectations of the team listed.

I also listed computer projections for final records TO THIS POINT in the season, if no more upsets happen:

  31. Another day, another commitment for WBB.

Taya Corosdale. Ranked #27 overall. 6’3″ Forward.

One scholarship left for the 2017 class. Westbrook is still the one to get.

  32. So what do we have for mens hoops recruiting? We have three spots for the class.

Negron has OV’d… and now blown out a knee. He says all his offers are still good, but I get the feeling he’s plan 1d behind Enoh and Mading.

However, Tinks can always move one of his shipped players to walk-on status… if he’s willing to spend a little bit of his salary on paying for one of his kids’ educations… for once. :)

A class of Thompson, Enoh, Mading and Negron would be an awesome haul.

    • Is this Herbert?
I saw him play a little bit, he looks much better than any option we currently have, even as a true freshman with only FCS offers.

    • Strategically a poor coaching decision with one of, if not the best, PAC defenses coming to town and UO players saying their win streak against UW will continue.

Petersen on the other hand wisely keeping his team muzzled (heh heh).

Oh well, maybe Justin will oversee an upset, initiate his legend, and they can start planning the Herbert Performance Center…I suggest the Dawgs may finally have their day.

  33. More options at qb are needed. Please invite prospects to walk on and earn a ship. Brandt Hughes is extremely accurate with the long ball and can hit a small target in traffic. His mechanics could use some work, but he has good grades, has decent size and can really compete. Yet his understudy gets buzz because he attends all of the camps. Beaver recruiters need to look under every rock to find guys with a will to win.

  34. OT: Childhood friend was in town for the Ryder Cup last weekend. His daughter just started Vet School at Oregon State and had purchased a hat with the Nutria on it at the Beaver Store.
Of the group eight at the course we were with, nobody had a clue what is was LOL. Most thought it was a some kind of bird. When Dave said it was an Oregon State hat, the inevitable response was…….”oh the Ducks.”

  35. OT: UO uniforms this week look like Cal. But the interesting thing is that they have the Oregon flag on the helmet. What they probably don’t know is that the other side of the flag (the side facing the player’s skull) has a Beaver on it (Oregon being the only state in the union with a two-sided flag).

  36. Bill,

You mentioned only 1 scholarship left for 2017. How did you come up with that figure? Just asking as I see that we only have a 12 person roster, 3 under the limit with 3 seniors this year. We should have 6 scholarships available. I just ask as I read a recruiting article for Corosdale which said we’re still in the mix for a few more players

Oregon State is still working on making additions to its 2017 class. Five-star guard Evina Westbrook, the No. 2 overall player in the class, Kiana Williams, a point guard who is ranked No. 12 in the class, and four-star guard Bendu Yeaney are both considering Oregon State as their destination of choice.

  37. Jack Wilson a 2018 bball prospect is very interested.

Big body. Reportedly around 250 and looks like it when you watch any highlights. Looks more like 6’9″/6’10” than the reported 7’0″. Won a CIF title last year.

Looks like a grinder type of guy. Any kind of range outside the paint would put him into the 5 star category.

  38. While I hope WSN is correct in OSU finally breaks through for a victory this weekend, I expect Cal’s QB to have a staff stuffing performance and a subsequent cheesy sports headline like “Bears Feast on Beavers Miscues.”

Down south, I expect at least one Duck QB to leave the game with an injury as the Dawgs break the 12 year losing streak to the Ducks…. this will be the first time in a long time I’ve rooted for the Huskies.

  39. I’ll probably do what I did for the Colorado game, which is watch the first half for sure, and watch the second half if it isn’t an utterly hopeless blowout.
