I’ve said before, this teams seems to enjoy the fight of getting better, and I think they’ll play hard and compete in stretches today. The secondary will be motivated for the challenge. Time for Decoud to get more notice…

Improved in what way? He’s better than he was last year. But he was better than he was last year the year before that. He’s about as good this year as he was his soph year, probably because he’s allowed to run again this year… and because he has yet to play a real D.

I’m pretty sure one of the reasons McMaryion is lower on the depth chart is his complete lack of running instincts. It’s funny because he’s just more of a true pocket guy, and that’s actually a detriment in this offense where the threat of the QB run is critical.

People are way too hard on him though. He really can’t do worse than Garretson or Blount have. We’ve basically had the worst QB play in FBS.

When you take another look at our schedule, it’s pretty clear that the middle slate is brutal. Check it out with current conf record:

    Boise St (undefeated)
    @Colo (4-1)
    Cal (2-2)
    Utah (4-1)
    @WA (4-0)
    WaSt (3-0)

But the home stretch lightens up considerably:

    @STAN (2-2)
    @UCLA (1-4)
    AZ (0-4)
    OR (0-4)

Could still end up a respectable season if the team stays engaged and McM makes some incremental improvement. Next week might be another rough one, though.

I think the Beavs are going to be pretty good next year on D, very good the following year.

Not sure about McM b/c the Huskies took this game over right away. I’ll want to see 2 more games from him vs lesser opponents. I feel the Beavs can win 4 games this year (arizona and oregon). McM throws a better ball than anyone, but his average is very low per attempt and no TDs…a lot of that is the Huskies. They’re on everything.

That’s my assessment from this game.

McM hasn’t looked very accurate and his body language is the sulkiest I’ve ever seen from a QB. I know they’re getting blown out, but he looks like a 7 year old who didn’t get his way.

That said, the pass protection has been bad and he’s done a pretty good job of not making mistakes by forcing things.

After seeing what Colorado did, Stanford certainly looks beatable. Utes just hung 52 on UCLA, so they look vulnerable as well, especially if we get Nall back. We did pretty great against the Bear Raid, so I think stopping the Air Raid is certainly within the realm of possibility, especially since we’ll be at home. Arizona and Oregon are both looking VERY down, and we get them at home, so I agree with you that we can win those for sure.

I wouldn’t be shocked by an upset vs. WSU and if they do 4 more wins this season is improbable but possible but realistically think they have 2 more wins in them this year.

Third-string quarterback Marcus McMaryion did not have a deer-in-the-headlights performance

Garretson wasn’t setting the world on fire before his injury, and what was supposed to be an upgraded passing game never materialized in his six games.

McMaryion was 12 of 26 for 148 yards and two interceptions in his second career start Saturday, but he showed poise in the pocket against the Pac-12’s top scoring defense.

And this from Andersen, “if people don’t recognize that progress is being made, “then I think you’ve kind of got some blinders on.””

I have personally witnessed every UW/OSU football game since 1998, which I offer to credential what I’m about to say: that was the most competitive performance by a Beav squad against the Dawgs since 2012 (the game at the Seahawks stadium). The 2013 debacle in Reser was the absolute low-point (when Riley was still the coach, by the way). Was the game ever in doubt? No. Major breakdowns in the defensive backfield, nominally our strongest unit? Yes. But I don’t think the Beavs have had as good a run game since Quiz left, and, as Jim Wilson likes to say, that’s something we can build on

they pulled back a bit, but then Peterson called them off even earlier a year ago in Corvallis. Like before the first half was even over. But to my point: in 2013, Sarkisian was running his THIRD string against the Beavs and they were still blowing Riley’s squad away. That game was the least competitive, most lackluster performance in the last decade and a half. No Andersen team would fail to even compete like that squad did that night.

Riley hadn’t had a team play with the kind of effort we’re seeing since 2009. And even that team gave up and went soft before the season ended. I would say the only Riley team that could truly match this effort over a season was the 2006 team after Al sat Riley down and told him to get his shit together.

If they keep playing like this, I wouldn’t say a bowl game was out of the question.

Of course, a part of that calculation is understanding that there will be some 5-7 teams going to bowls. But GA has considerably raised the academic standing of this team, so we may have a shot. Has anyone looked at the metric the NCAA uses for that? Is it a readily found page?

It’s pretty simple. If you can’t catch the ball when it hits you in the hands, you suck for a play. If you suck for multiple plays, it’s you.

We’re about four games past that.

Curious on the recruiting front, Rivals currently has us at 17 commits and we know we are still pursuing several JUCO pieces along with some higher rated high school guys. Anyone know how many they can sign? Do they have space to count backwards? Scholarships available assuming no one leaves?

I’ve been trying to figure it out but its hard to find exactly who is and who is not on scholarship.

My count is 80-82, which is as accurate as I think you can get. 15 scholarship seniors based on my numbers. Normal attrition would be around 5-10 lost for retirement or other reasons. I predict they will max out 25 commitments this class.

Going back to yesterday, was anyone else screaming to kick the FG on the 1st quarter drive? I know they were behind 14-0 but it was 4th and 2 and sometimes just getting that 0 off the scoreboard is a big step.

Felt like they gave up all the momentum they gained on that drive in that 1 play and had they taken the 3 points they still wouldn’t have won but I think they could have kept the game closer.

Main point, 1st quarter of the game and you have 0 points, take the damn points

If you’ve been paying attention lately, a 40 yd FG with Owens isn’t a gimmie. Kick the FG? miss or make. Go for it on 4th down? Miss or make. 50/50. It was a good play call on 4th down

In your opinion. But for the sake of argument.

And just looked, it was actually a 4th and 3 because they lost yardage on 3rd down.

He is 4/6 from 40-49 yards. 1 miss was a 45 yard kick, the other was a a 48 yard attempt, 2 of his other misses were from over 50 yards. So this year has only missed 1 kick from 40 yards and in. So I don’t think your claim that it was 50/50 holds water here.

The team is 2/9 (1/7 when the decision to go for it was made) on 4th down plays in 2016 so its less than 50/50 based on history.
In addition using 3rd down data (bigger sample size) for all of college football, you are likely to get 3 yards on 3rd down about 52% of the time. Combine that with the 1 for 7 on 4th down overall and I have a difficult time calling that 4th and 3 a 50/50 proposition.

I stand by the opinion that you kick there.

The snapping and holding have been equally poor, I think the decision should have been go for it there. Punch it in there and you feel real good. Giving them the ball deep in their territory is not bad.
I think we should put the kicking game on the shelf when its three yards or less.

I guess some of you don’t believe in momentum and emotion during a game.

Kicking a FG (which was far better than 50/50 there) keeps your energy from the long drive, getting stopped on 4th not only wipe out your energy but gives it to UW.

To each their own but I was screaming at the TV and will be in the same situation next time. Sometimes a FG attempt is a win. It was a win in that situation.

you can throw out all the statistical mumbo jumbo you want. You either make it or you don’t. That’s 50/50. In this particular case it was a good play call and the Husky player made a good open field tackle. They executed, OSU didn’t. Had it been 4th and 5+ from that same point on the field I might agree with you.

That said, momentum? Against Washington? Oregon St wasn’t winning that game whether they got 0, 3 or 7 on that drive. The talent differential between the two teams was glaringly obvious. At damn near every position. Beavs did a few good things yesterday. The punt block and Bolden’s fly sweep TD come to mind. But be honest with yourself. They were lucky to only lose by 24. UW could’ve ran it up if they so chose to do.

This is what is so ridiculous about you.

Sorry but what you are saying is nonsense. Of course statistics matter and it was NOT 50/50 no matter how much you want to claim it was. That is just a ridiculous claim based on NOTHING. Making a 40 yard FG is NOT a 50/50 play; its more like a 70/30 play. Getting a 4th and 3 is a 50/50 play but actually getting the 4th and 3 and turning that into a TD is less than a 50/50 play.

Of course the stats matter, that is how you should be making your decisions.

I understand OSU wasn’t going to win yesterday, that doesn’t suddenly turn a poor game management decision into a good one.

You say it was a good call, fine, you are entitled to that opinion but don’t claim nonsense stats (make it/don’t make it is NOT 50/50) to back up your position.

Based on your logic I guess they should go for 2 every time. I mean either they make it or they don’t (50/50) which is just like a PAT since either they make it or they don’t (50/50).

That is the way your ‘make it or they don’t’ logic sounds.

Are there times to go for it? Of course, yesterday on 4th and 3 after losing a yard on 3rd and 2 at the end of a long drive in a game you have no points in yet was not one of them. It simply wasn’t.

What’s non nonsensical about it? I understand statistics. There’s a higher “probability” of making 4th and 3 then making 4th and 5. But you still either execute and make it or you don’t. Pretty cut and dried there. I guess you’ve also not heard GA talk about being aggressive. There’s being aggressive (going for it on 4th and 3 at your opponents 23 yard line), then there’s being idiotic (see BYU’s fake punt on 4th and 19 from their own 5 yard line). Either way I was fine with going for it and the play call. You weren’t. You’re in the minority here. That’s less than 50%.

Speaking of the ridiculous, your (among others) continued bitching about GA, this staff and the play calling. We get it dude. You’d have preferred Beau Baldwin. So says the HS JV assistant football coach. Or whatever. Andersen is the head coach. And will be for awhile. And he’s an upgrade over Simple Jack. They’re kind of hamstrung due to the roster they inherited. Recruiting better players isn’t a 1 year turnaround. Those players they did recruit have been in the system for just over a year at most? Get over it.

Well it’s true they either make it or they don’t, which is 50/50, but only without nuances/variables that totally change the odds.

It’s like a lottery: the odds of winning are 50/50, you win or lose, but the probability of actually winning are 1 in millions because of the various factors involved to win (e.g. specific numbers in a specific order, etc).

You guys should and do know this so stop arguing about it.

Whether the call was a good one or not should be judged on many factors, the most obvious being that FGs were not going to win this game.

“I get it, you want to suck Andersen’s dick and he can apparently do no wrong in your eyes. He is perfect and will get OSU to the promise land.”

I don’t suck dick. I leave that to your mom (see I can be a dick too!). Is GA and this staff perfect? Nope. But here’s some numbers your pea brain can probably understand. I’ll take GA’s opinion and decisions over yours. 100% of the time. Right or wrong. That’s why he’s the head coach and well, you aren’t. No dick sucking. I’m just happy to have a coach moving a program in the right direction instead of being stagnant. You don’t see it. That’s a YOU problem.

“FYI, I haven’t criticized Andersen in weeks, I criticized 1 decision. That does not equal criticizing everything about the coach you simple minded fool.”

Don’t give a fuck. You’ve said enough and been enough of a “know it all pompous ass” over this coaching staff. You can have an opinion. But stick to JV high school FB. Again, I’ll take a P5 college football coach’s opinion and decisions over yours 100% of the time.

You want to talk probabilities and statistics? Let’s examine a few more you left out. It’s still 11 on 11 out there and then there’s that funny oblong shaped ball too. A 4th and 3 snap to a holder that is 7 yards behind snap has a statistically higher rate of being a bad snap than a 4th and 3 to a QB that is 5 yards behind the snap. Then there’s also the hold itself. Since there is no hold to a kicker going for it on 4th and 3 then the probability of there being a bad hold is ZERO.

But wait, here’s an argument IN YOUR FAVOR! Since there’s no pitch to a running back on a FG attempt on 4th and 3, it is statistically a higher probability there won’t be a fumble to the running back on a 4th and 3 FG attempt.

            Then there’s weather!

I get it. The dynamics of getting to the kick aren’t 50/50. The dynamics of getting to successfully converting a 4th and 3 aren’t 50/50. But making the kick or getting past the first down marker is still 50/50.

Then you mention momentum. Well, if you make the FG you are still down 2 scores. 14-3 = 11.

            11 = 1 touchdown, 2 point conversion and a FG. 6 + 2 + 3

Miss it, you’re still down 2 scores. It was still in the first quarter. Hopefully you can do the math on that one.

Angry is also right on this one. FG’s weren’t going to win this game. OSU had NOT stopped UW on their first two drives. Being aggressive on the road against the 5th ranked team in the nation and having nothing to lose is different than being idiotic. I guess that’s another concept you fail to understand.

It’s definitely not 50/50. If FG kickers only kicked at a 50% clip guys like you and I would be on NFL rosters.

That said, it was smart to go for it on 4th down. No way FGs were beating Washington.

            angry,

That “no way FGs were beating Washington” logic may be sound in this 1 case but it hurts your cause to think that way. You have to be able to make decisions based on current data.

It reminds me of when Riley went for 2 vs. Utah back in 2008 in the 2nd quarter because they were down 5 then did it again in the 3rd quarter because they were up 1. You could easily argue it was simply being aggressive in order to keep up with Utah but at the end of the day those 2 points they didn’t get were the difference between likely winning and losing the game.

At certain points in the game (any game) getting points has value. Yes, OSU wasn’t gonna beat UW with FGs (or TDs for that matter) but you can make it 14-3 and you are a freak play from 14-10 and you never know after that and having tons of momentum. The Beavs would only win yesterday if UW has an off day and taking 3 there puts you in better position to take advantage of such a thing.

Anyway, my bigger gripe isn’t that some think it was smart to go for it there but whiskey’s nonsense about it being 50/50 and how no one should be critical of Andersen or his decisions. That is just bullshit.

I can see both sides. It would have been a morale booster to not have a goose egg on the board going into the half. But we will not win that game if we don’t prove that we can push the ball two yards when we need to do so. And TDs will beat UW at that point, while a FG is basically conceding.

So yes, a FG is a better play if you want to lose 35-17. The outcome is what it is. But a first down at that point gives us some of that emotion that I think you overvalue with the FG and erasing the 0. We were still in it at that point, and that decision also showed the players we were going to keep punching.

And that is a fair argument jack.

I value the (almost) guaranteed points there more than the lower possibility of getting 7.

I don’t think a FG is conceding though. I think it shows your defense that you trust that they can get a stop or 2. At the end of the day I think getting no points after a really nice drive was just too big of a risk in that situation.

Had they just gotten a turnover or had only driven the ball 20 yards prior to the 4th down I’d probably be more inclined to agree with the risk of going for it there but to have a 11 play 53 yard drive end in a thud just kills you emotionally in my view.

This doesn’t mean you never go for a 4th down in the first half but not on a 4th and 3 when you have a very probable 3 points waiting for you. Just get some points at that point.

Somebody pointed out that OSU averaged about 6 YPC against UW’s run defense, good point.

I have been a fan of Cook’s since some of his fall camp highlights, seemed like he consistently ran hard.

With Nall, Pierce, and Cook, we are seeing the “three deep at RB” that Andersen said he wanted, and tough running by all three. Demonstrable progress.

The other signs of progress are on the Oline, the DB play, and there are some scattered good plays by the LBs. I expect when the DL play improves the LBs will look better as beneficiaries of that play.

At the beginning of the year, Cook was hitting the hole with his head down and getting stopped. Part of that was the O-line. But Nall and Pierce weren’t having the same issues. Now he’s almost stopping in the hole then finding his cut and moving downhill.

Lucas is not yet doing this. He’s full throttle when he gets the ball, and he ends up past the open cut when it appears, leaving him running east-west and into the boundary. Or he’s still runing into the back of his O-line when running inside.
