Home Football Arizona Recap/Early Civil War Discussion

Arizona Recap/Early Civil War Discussion

423

When you look back on the season, it’s really not that surprising they beat Arizona this badly. The Beavs had been playing hard every week, almost every play, and improving in subtle ways. It seems no matter who gets injured the next guy up gives similar effort. I thought they’d win out UCLA, AZ, and Oregon, but with Nall out last week it put a damper on that. Still think they win the Civil War.

McMaryion was very impressive. Interesting that I wrote a QB can’t be fairly judged until they start six games. Last night was McM’s 6th career start. The week before I was beginning to doubt him and felt he might just be a good backup, but finally he showed what I saw all along. Now can he keep it up? We’ll see. Probably vs Oregon. His best games have been against soft defenses, so it’s still hard to say if he’s the answer, or if GA & crew will even let him be the answer should he prove he is. I sense a mishandling of the situation next year, but that’s for then.

The blueprint for winning the CW was laid out yesterday. Oregon’s QB situation looks improved as well. Both teams QB’s are playing their best ball, which should make for an offensive game. Beavers have a defensive advantage and a lot of pent out aggression to take out on the Ducks. I’m thinking 30-21 Beavs.

  1. I also think McM played well. There was plenty of pressure being brought by AZ and he just kept throwing darts. He didn’t throw many bad balls either. He just took what the defense gave him.

I also think the game was called MUCH better. Focus on the run and short passes / slants then throw one over the top. Aside from that end zone fly sweep which should have been a safety (and could have turned the momentum) it was well called. McGiven needs to keep this up against the Ducks like he did last year In the second half.

The defense seemed to have an issue with running QBs. I hope they can get to Herbert early enough to rattle him. A pick and/or sack would definitely get in his head and affect the passing game. That will make Freeman their only option. If they continue playing disciplined D, they’ve got a good shot.

Going with my gut, 38-31 for OSU with lots of lead changes. Go beavs.

  2. Hard to evaluate the QB situation week to week.
Was McM that good? AZ defense that bad?

One thing rings true however, the QB sure looks a heck of
a lot better when the receiving corps are making the catches.
Many of those same types of passes from McM have been
    dropped these last few weeks.

Next years QB battle will be interesting nonetheless. Hoping
GA et al don’t butcher it.

  3. Great game last night. All around.
Really think they can dominate Oregon offensively next week in spite of their apparent defensive success against Utah (I did not get to watch the game). Love to see McM with 25-40 yrds rushing to go along with the ever improving pass game.
Hurts that Jalen Moore is out. Going to be important to lay the wood to Herbert and drop Royce after contact. I see a shootout. 42-34 Beavs.

  4. Not bad really for the season considering that there current SOS is like 14th in the country or something like that.. so they have played some good teams

  5. I like their chances against the Ucks.. at home coming off best overall game this season.. limit TO’s and penalties.. and i think they need to get ahead like 10-14 early and I think they win it.. 38-27

  6. What I like was that OSU played a bad team that was giving up 38 PPG, should have won, and did; don’t take that away from McM. Too often this program has lost games it should have won. I imagine 16 out of 19 has to be an OSU single game completion percentage record, or close to it. More TDs than incompletions! I wouldn’t think any other QB on the roster would have had a game throwing the ball like McM did. They could have won, but not throwing like that. I like the boost this game must give him going into CW week and into next spring.

Taking from Egger’s column, there’s a lot on McM as expected.

“McMaryion had the game of his young career. The sophomore quarterback completed his first seven passes and finished 16 of 19 for 265 yards and the five TDs, just short of Sean Mannion’s school-record six against Colorado in 2013.

“Marcus was masterful at taking the clock down and doing the things he needs to do,” Andersen said.

“He threw the ball accurately, and when it was accurate, the ball got caught. That’s big for us, because it hasn’t gone that way for us a lot of times.

“It’s awesome to see Marcus have that success. He’s a tough-minded young man, he’s a battler, he’s a team-first guy. It’s great to see him get in position to make those plays.”

Said McMaryion: “Guys were just making plays. The play calls were there. Real simple. I was trying to stick to my reads and not think too much. It paid dividends.”

“When you can throw it and catch it and run it,” Andersen said, “offense becomes a lot simpler.”

The WRs finally came through with some great catches. Liked Bradford’s inside out move on the TD where he was so wide open. I think if they continue to play like that, they can really have success again next week.

Also, someone in the game thread suggested that with Collins and Bolden out, it might have opened up play calling instead of “force feeding” them the ball. I think that’s an interesting and potentially accurate perspective; just throw it tot he open WR. Though I think Bolden could be missed on ST if he doesn’t play in the CW. I won’t be surprised if Collins doesn’t come back for the CW, at least to be on the sidelines.

“Andersen gave credit to OSU’s offensive line, with seniors Sean Harlow, Gavin Andrews and Dustin Stanton and freshmen Blake Brandel and Gus Lavaka.”

Question: Is Lavaka improving and genuinely playing well? I thought he was pretty widely panned, at least here. Great if he is, the depth is needed.

I read this from Egger’s column and think Rich Rod sounding likeAndersen dealing with Riley’s recruits but unlike Andersen and staff, sounds like he’s citing injury excuses:

“….Arizona coach Rick Rodriguez, and he let out his feelings afterward as he met with the media and lamented poor play exasperated by a string of injuries on the defensive side. “We struggle stopping anybody,” Rodriguez began. “Who we’re playing at linebacker is a mystery. We’re too small, we’re too weak, we can’t get off blocks. Everything we have going on, you could blame on injuries. It goes back to us not getting deep enough or big enough in recruiting for our roster. We’ve addressed that now, but it’s painful to go through that.”

On putting together longer drives in terms of yardage:
“OSU marched 96 yards in nine plays, capped by Timmy Hernandez’s diving 27-yard TD catch in the corner of the end zone,” …..”The Beavers took it 73 yards in 10 plays,”…..Nice to see drives of this length, instead of relying on the occasional big play by Nall or Bolden – not that big plays are bad, but the D enjoyed the rest these drives provided.

“Former Oregon State running back Terron Ward, now with the Atlanta Falcons, was on the OSU sidelines during the Falcons’ bye weekend.”…Cool, one of my favorite Beaver players, and a great example of a genuine overlooked player who earned PT. I hope Cook gets some carries next week. Andersen claims to be sensitive of the senior’s in terms of sending them out well; I hope that includes Cook next week.

    • This was Eggers assessment of McM, from my emails with him.

“Average thrower, average runner, inexperienced in a big-time setting, for starters.”

      • He’s jumping on the bandwagon. But if Mcm has a poor game in the CW (let’s hope not) he’ll be tearing him down in the next article.

        • What bandwagon? Did MM not have a good game? Is saying that he did jumping on a bandwagon?

MM threw more TDs last night than he had all season.

Am I on his bandwagon now?

You people and your ghosts are weird.

      • A single, well put together game (arguably against a weak team) does not mean he is necessarily better than assessed.

Consistency is the measurement of any “good” player; if he begins to demonstrate that, then yes, this assessment will need to properly reflect his growth.

    • With Nall, Lavaka, Titus Failauga, and Dwayne Williams back on the field the team got way better. 1st down run success opened up the passing game. Great game by McMaryion, no mistakes, throw to Hernandez was a beauty. 12-play 4th qtr drive with 10 running plays closed the door. D gave up a lot of 1st downs and made only two 3 and outs all game, but had big plays: a stop on 4th down, a 20 yd sack on 3rd down in FG range, and the pick in the end zone.

CW will require 40+ points to win. Nall+Pierce will need over 200 yds combined and the D will need 2+ takeaways. I don’t think we can bother with FG’s, just keep running fakes.

      • Dont know. Given the offer sheet, I would have to assume his grades are in order.
He’s an Army all american, but that team has had their share of academic casualties.

    • Perhaps offering his teammate Arex Flemings was on purpose to get Calvin to consider OSU. Having them both visit in the same day didn’t hurt either. As GA has stated before, the major battle is getting these high level recruits on campus. One they are here, the place sells itself.

    • they’re ready to give UH’s Tom Herman the key to Austin Fort Knox. The LSU job may interest him also.

Honestly I thought Strong was a pretty good coach. Apparently not. But then again he doesn’t call the shots at UT and neither will anyone else they hire. That’s a bad job but I’m sure the money is great so there is that.

      • Texas AD has said no decisions will be made till the end of the season. But losing to Kansas is not a good look. For any Power 5 team.

        • If UT boosters want him gone, he’s gone. No matter what Mike Perrin says. They lost to Kansas for the first time since 1938. A formal announcement probably won’t come until after their last game against TCU. Either way, he’s Texas toast

          • I also think he is a good coach and would have been the coach here in 07 if the AD wasn’t a moron.
You need to be a backslapping politician first and foremost there. That’s not him. He would clean up the crap at Baylor. I like him as a coach.

          • You could be on to something. I think he’s a system/process guy like GA. It’s my way or the highway. No player is bigger than the program. At places like Texas where winning at all costs is all that matters, he was probably a bad fit. I think he will wind up on his feet somewhere

  9. Something interesting I noticed in the post game interview with GA. When asked about McM and his well played game all GA could say something along the lines that McM is getting better every week. He gave no props to McM to playing a good game. Is that typical for GA to not give individual props to a player and keep focus on the team or is he still not sold on McM?

I’m totally feeling the same thing Angry is and think GA is going to really mess up the QB situation in the off-season, but I guess that isn’t where our focus should be right now.

    • Did you watch/listen to the whole presser? GA did give MM props in two different questions and said he was very proud of him. What’s interesting to me is he said the receivers were finally catching the balls that MM was throwing. He gave MM credit for throwing accurately but said the receivers have not been catching those balls in the past.

  10. I agree about the oddness. Feels, after these two seasons, as if GA gets too involved in personal politics with certain players . . . and not to the benefit of the team.

Think what this season of close games would have been if MM had started and continued his progress from the Civil War last year.

Even though the staff has shown an ability to recruit pretty well and develop the team in general, I’d be willing to let GA slip a bit south, and we could get Beau Baldwin. Ducks could be happy, and we could be happier.

      • Joking about GA to the Ducks.

But not about the rest. I’m getting tired of GA and his apparent petty resentments with certain players.

This mystery has been a consistent theme under GA’s watch.

          • Yeah, exactly. At first his luke-warm response was strange, but then he gave proper credit during the presser. I think he added a few more positive compliments other than the “masterful” one.

The reason I think the coaches are “anti-McM” is that if he succeeds they’ll have to look in the mirror and admit they were either biased/blind all along and/or their staff has problems analyzing players. That’s hard to admit about one’s self or coaches GA is friends with and likes. I’m not saying he wants McM to fail, but that if McM fails it’s just easier on their egos.

          • As mentioned in the previous thread:
Good to hear GA call McM a game manager AND a playmaker………….per interview with Ron C. on postgame radio.

      • I think the reason they don’t have any conflict with Nall is because they recognized him as a special player right away and made him a starter. They didn’t recognize McM, so admitting the oversight is harder. GA needs to put on his big boy pants and admit the oversight and learn from it.

        • Angry,

I remember earlier in the season you had written about your feeling the staff had evaluated McM poorly (i.e. weren’t giving him a fair shake compared to other players in the same position, or other players on the team), or that they had made an oversight.

Obviously, coaching staffs will as a group evaluate individual players by position and they will have their favorites — but there are many units as a whole that need adjustments by specific players through the course of a season. The question then becomes apart from whether or not those players are demonstrating those skills they staff feels are needed to be successful in their scheme, how do you motivate particular players as they struggle through the course of a season?

This staff strikes me in comparison to other teams, to be more team-focused and unit-focused in culture; they don’t tend to call out particular performances unless they happen to be exceptional, or they are questioned specifically on them? For me this means, if you do hear a coach say something positive about a particular player, this is a sign they are doing significantly better.

From outside the team, I can’t say what kind of athlete McM is, or what particular issues he feels he has and the staff felt he may have had within the scheme; it is possible some of the moves we saw through this season regarding QB were less ill-treatment, and more to purposefully motivate him or the other players in that unit e.g. starting him in games where it would be difficult for him to succeed, splitting time with another QB, and so on.

          • Yes, it could have been motivation techniques. Could have been something less concerning [than evaluation problems] like McM wasn’t running at all.

Let’s hope it’s that, but the way they were so cold, verbally, toward him after he worked hard and had good games (WSU), it seems like something more.

Two (WSU and AZ) great games doesn’t make him great or “the answer”, but I do think it makes him extremely valuable — a potential starter next year and at worst a very good backup. If they’re not going to give him those opportunities they should ask him to transfer because he’s shown enough.

And where is that guy who said he’s not a D1 QB?? I don’t care how bad AZ’s defense is — D2 QBs don’t put up numbers like that versus them… unless they’re playing Riley.

      • It’s actually a pretty well thought out poster.

        *Local kid
        * JUCO kid
        * Florida kid
        * Nice QB numbers
        * Nice WR receiver numbers

Just so happens a bunch of those kids are being recruited now, nicely done.

      • Think Nall can make it in the NFL? The injury history seems problematic, and though he has good speed, I wonder if he hits top speed quick enough?

If he has a great year next year, injury free, would he be a viable NFL draft pick and maybe declare?

        • It depends on the system. He could be the next Daryl Johnston at Dallas, playing at ST and as a pass catching FB. His speed is impressive, but the wear on a body like that running between the tackles in the NFL doesn’t allow any but the great RBs to have any kind of longevity. If he ends up in a position where he initiates contact with his blocking, hits the ground a lot less and gets the ball every once in a while in space… he could have a nice career and be a fan favorite.

His size, hands and surprising speed could make him a target as such a player.

          • That’s a good suggestion. He makes a lot of yards after contact now, but in the NFL he’d be “contacted” by bigger, faster players within the first several yards of scrimmage and its difficult for me to imagine his body would hold up long in that league.

          • Almost hate to say it, but I think Caroll would have some productive plays for him with that approach. Dallas…Oakland? I don’t watch much pro ball.

          • I thought Dallas and Oakland first.

But he’s certainly a talent who you can pay moderately and design a package around him on many teams. If you keep someone like that on your payroll, he’s a value add for consistency and leadership.

We’ll see how he does on the injury front for the next two years. That will likely affect him more than anything.

        • Hard to say. His speed has been pretty deceptive. I still wonder if he might get drafted to play linebacker. He’s a great athlete so I would think someone would draft him knowing they could try a few things with him and find a good fit somewhere. Staying healthy next year will help a lot, him and us!

  11. Just noticed on BeaverSedge that Josh Bowcut is a mission guy. Opens up room for 1 more guy in the current class which at this point, is some nice wiggle room to work with as they round out the class

  12. From Eugene Register Guard:

“Oregon’s defense was ranked 127th out of 128 FBS teams in points allowed (43.5 per game) and 126th in yards allowed (535.7 per game) before the Ducks held Utah to 28 points and 453 yards.

“I don’t sleep at night before (games),” Hoke said. “But I just think there’s a lot of improvement across the board.”

    • Luton seems to have a pretty quick release, and can also throw with some touch when needed. Based on his numbers, he appears to be learning pretty quickly coming from a veer offense background.

At OSU, he has McGiven, Keeton, Movaeo to work with him. Seems like Baldwin would be a better option to develop his passing given Baldwin’s history and “view” of the entire offense. I wonder if he’ll even be here next year?

        • Exactly. I don’t believe anyone on the coaching staff is going anywhere this offseason and all of them take it personally that the results have been underwhelming.

Recruit, get better student athletes and continue to train. The results will come. We’ve already seen improvement. Winning the CW would be a springboard into next year

  13. Early thoughts on the CW –

    1. Oregon beating Utah was a bad sign. Ducks will be confident coming into the game following a good road win.
    2. Ducks put up 575 yards on a tough Utah defense. Stupid mistake by return man gifted Utah a TD.
    3. Ducks still have more playmakers than the Beavs. Herbert is improving.
    4. Nall is the difference maker. Helps the passing game immensely.
    5. Beavs unis were pretty ugly last game.
    6. Arizona is sprialing down really fast. I think if the game was played earlier this year, it would have been a close game.

I feel Helfrich will be super aggressive in his play calling in order to save his job. 4 down territory will be extended out to the 50.

Biggest keys to the game –
Freeman and Nall. Stop Oregon’s running game. Let Nall loose. Keep Oregon’s offense off the field.

    • I think its a safe bet Andersen will want to keep UO off the field and run the ball a lot. Can the D hand on better than they did against Cal if it is working?

Also, in the last game, he really had McMaryion using the clock and complimented him for it so I expect that to continue.

I think if UO plays its typical atrocious D, and OSU can make UO special teams a non-factor, then OSU can win this one.

Magic 8-ball says score prediction hazy right now, ask again later…

    • 1. Same could be called a good sign.
      2. Utah was making some weird mistakes. But give the Ducks credit.
      3. Same as 2? More doesn’t mean better. But their QB is more consistently good.
      4. Goes to “doesn’t mean better” part of 3.
      5. yeah
      6. Their D has been bad all year. If we’d have played them and tried to pass instead of run on them because that book hadn’t yet been written, then maybe. And your argument gets a bump because Pierce would not have been as mature a runner as he is now.

Extending 4th down to the 50 would actually be the norm. He’s gone for it from his own 30 a couple times this year… and not in the late 4th when he had to do so. Will he also go for 2 on both their TDs?

      Biggest key to the game:
This is the last game. Play your heart out then go get a good night’s sleep knowing you did your best… to make them not sleep well.

  14. Andersen says, “I expect Bolden to play”
And, per Eggers, “Civil War game a sellout. Oregon took 3,400 tickets — returned 440”

  15. Wow!! All those recruits coming this weekend is amazing!! Thanks to whom ever updates the list!! Hope we get the win and make a good impression for them.

    • Lololol……as recently as yesterday. Probably wanted to find out how the official visits went from last weekend. At least for the guys she couldn’t track down at the airport.

  16. “Oregon passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach Matt Lubick was an assistant coach under Oregon State offensive coordinator/then Cal-State Northridge head coach Dave Baldwin in 1996 and again at San Jose State 1997-98. During the 1999-2000 seasons Lubick was the defensive backs coach/recruiting coordinator at OSU under head coach Dennis Erickson.”

Is this a mixup from last years details of Baldwin being the coordinator, or is there something they’re not telling us?

    From http://www.osubeavers.com/news/2016/11/22/football-beavers-to-host-civil-war-at-sold-out-reser.aspx

  17. Pet peeve inspired by Mike Parker: people giving sports teams credit for not quitting during the game. THAT’S A BASE EXPECTATION! If it doesn’t look like I’m going to make a deadline at work, I don’t just throw in the towel, give up, and coast. I don’t say “well, maybe I’ll make the next one.” Like most people, I work hard to do the best I can given my situation. Given that games are only a matter of minutes anyway, there is no excuse for quitting. None.

  18. Bahaha!!! Just when I thought you people couldn’t be any more pathetic! OMFG you guys are total LOSERS and your teams have literally the ugliest possible colors and uniforms of all time. The universe hates all of you.

      • Gotta also giggle at Elu’s assessment. He’s completely correct about everything except the passion with which he plays. He’s got a lot of Taz in him.

    • Here was Angry’s initial thoughts on DeCoud…………

Treston DeCoud — I am not as high on this guy as the recruiting services. Not convinced he can cover, as most of the film highlights are bad throws or him hitting someone hard. Maybe a better safety prospect than CB.

So much for always being right (self proclaimed) on your recruiting evaluations.

          • Or traveling. Or using his body/off hand to push a defender to the floor. His final shot as a Bull to win the ’98 finals is a defining moment of his career. However, very few point out that he pushed Bryon Russell onto his ass to create the shot. Don’t get me wrong, Jordan was a great player. But until the superstar rules bullshit goes away the NBA is what it is. And college hoops isn’t too far behind. We all saw how refereeing can impact a game last year in SLC. Or the win at Gill over UW. Take your pick

Shitty video but it’s still 100% evident

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbDlae0rN2g

          • Always loved the comments about MJs “quick first step!” from the announcers, who rarely pointed out the extra step. Or carrying the ball…

    • My intent wasn’t to criticize the assessments but rather, with the benefit of time and injuries forcing young players to the fore, revisit perceptions because I think its instructive. You can read through the comments and find other hits and misses.

Missing on individuals when ranking an entire class when variable amounts of player film are available is understandable. The overall assessment that the 2016 class might be one of the better in program is history is I think likely to be borne out. I think an OSU defense comprised of these HEALTHY individuals could be quite effective within the next year or two and very enjoyable to watch. And Nall (whom nobody seemed to know where to play because of his high ability and potential) and Pierce are going to be a great tandem.

I am not good at judging film because I question the level of competition and the selective nature of highlights. Sure, really bad or really good players are easy to spot, but judging and attempting to separate those players in between bad and great, and their potential at the next level, is I think difficult and I enjoy reading others assessments.

      • I think it’s more instructive of the values placed on certain attributes at the time. You can see us moving away from capture-bonding and into the new reality… some swinging the pendulum way past reality… some staying fast in the bunker. It’s human nature to do so, and misses will result.

  19. Depth is the biggest issue on the bball team.

Losing two starting guards hurt more than I thought. McLoughlin is coming along slower than I thought and none of the other guards can really bring the ball up court.

The JC transfers have blown up spectacularly. Stacy is just bad. Not sure if he has any upside anymore.Counted on Stacy to be a steady presence but it turns out it’s a steady turnover machine for the opponents. Dew’s past again surfaces. Blows a second chance just a couple games into the year and it’s a big loss for the front court rebounding.

STJ’s injury hurts but probably doesn’t change the outcome of these games.

The front court depth is thin as well. N’Diaye is basically useless it’s at the end of the game for fouling purposes. Dahlen isn’t an answer.

How does this team start competing? It’s going to take a lot of luck.
    1. McLoughlin and Manuel will have to shoulder the PG position. If Stacy continues to turn the ball over and not facilitate the offense, then he’s not going to play.
    2. Kone will need to be an impact player. It’ll take a lot of pressure off the front court.
    3. WT should go back to his first year plan. Hunker down defensively and use all of the shot clock on offense. Keep the game in the 50s.

    • I never understood the ribbing on Malcolm. Yes, he’s good for one dribble off his foot and out of bounds and one pass to the third row… per game. But that’s about it. He plays great D and has a solid handle supplemented with great strength.

Agreed on Stacy. His yips are bench-worthy. The silver lining on Dew is that G plays more. It will take a couple games for him to get in rhythm because he’s not been given his due… because of Dew I guess. G needs to pass more as well as more quickly.

Bigs need to keep their feet on D. They’re all jumping too quickly.

The stretches we do well are when our best players control the mid-range. When Tres is wildly waving his arms on the weak side perimeter, the D has it easy. Yes Tres… you’re open. That’s because you’re not moving, making the help side D respect you.

Stevie will clean up the G rotation, but Manuel will have to fill the Malcolm role with better D and timely shooting. Malcolm was our heart check guy.

    • I hate to go back to something that works, but running the Monty system without a true 4 or a stretch who is willing to play the paint leads me to believe the contingency needs to look a lot more like this:
      https://www.usab.com/youth/news/2011/08/3simple-ways-to-attack-a-zone-defense.aspx

There’s zero reason to be giving G or Dew or whoever the ball at the high post. We have others who are an actual threat from that range and can facilitate much better. Once Ben is here, he can play the 4, and all will look whole, albeit still young. But even then we can run this and put him at the short corner. He’s a one step kind of player who could feast on this motion. And Drew is suddenly not double or triple teamed anymore, allowing him to find better positions and work the paint better.

I know Tinks has a vision of how it will work with all the pieces together and wants those pieces to be in rhythm, But ignoring the most important roles in this O are costing games now which lead to the need for a stellar conference run to get any respect at season’s end. We can do that with the personnel on hand if healthy. But being realistic with youth and without a steady point (as of now), that’s not going to happen. They could catch lightning in a bottle in the Pac Tourney. That’s much more likely given their size and athleticism… and probably having nothing to lose at that point.

We’ll likely see a night and day difference once we’re whole. And some will ask why we didn’t look like that right now, early in the season. It will be good enough that not having these early losses (and there will be more) would have put us on the good side of the bubble. But we’re pretty much screwed unless we run out the non-con and the three losses are all auto-tourney bids.

I do have to say Tulsa didn’t look like that in the other game I watched. And it wasn’t because of the D they faced. They looked like us against Lamar… as did Miss St last week when I watched them. If they’re coming together like they are, we can too.

I’m just really disappointed with our spacing on O. It can’t get worse.

    • Must have had a pretty pathetic career if that is his proudest moment. Think about how stupid this sounds: The proudest moment of my career was in 2006 when I accidentally (or purposefully?) hurt Coach Paterno on the sideline. I was so proud of that moment because I hated him so much for what he was. Oh, wait at that time I had no reason to hate him other than he was the coach of an opposing team. But, yeah I remember thinking how proud I was to hurt a senior citizen.

I have never met anyone who was happy in life because they received revenge/punishment to those who wronged them. I have met plenty of people who have been wronged and were happy. The only way these people become happy with life is moving past being victimized. I am totally in support of punishment, but does anyone really think that society can function properly if victims and predators walk around harboring hate for most of society because of the situation. It just isn’t healthy for anyone.

      Just my thoughts.

      • He probably felt really bad about it for a long time. And now, like an addict making amends, he’s announcing publicly how he has resolved that guilt.

It turns out his guilt was misplaced, and he is free from it.

I would agree that being the proudest moment is weird. Perhaps it became more personal after the pedo enabler became such to the world.

    • It’s sort of an odd “best of” moment, but of course the delusional Joe Pa defenders show up right on cue. Misdirected defenses can’t undo how it ended and how it ended poisoned it all. It’s not a restorable legacy, Franco. Save your outrage for other more important injustices other than Joe Pa’s broken leg.

  20. Arizona is a complete dog shit of a football team. Thank fuck that osu won, because losing to them would mean osu couldnt jizz its way out of a sock.

Unfortunately I don’t see osu winning the civil war. Beavers defense is still having problems with running quarterbacks, and gave up a lot of rushing yards between the tackles and on the edges to pretty much the worst team in the history of rich rod’s abortion of a career in college football.

That is Oregon’s MO. Running. Even if they suck fucky chode this year, they still have better offensive players that don’t have to play as well. Oregons best win (utah) is better that osu’s (california?).

The chances of osu touching dicktips with whoregon lies solely on nall. If he golden showers oregon to the tune of 200+, then sure. But I give that a Cleveland steamers chance in hell.

  21. Probably wishful thinking but…….

Is it possible the coaching staff have been a bit reserved regarding their MCM comments because they don’t want to lose Luton?

  22. AT P-T Jason calls the Beavers in a tight one:

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/333573-212435-jason-says-beavers-hunger-for-win-could-drive-them-into-the-record-book

Kerry calls it for the Ducks owing to a consistently better offense than the Beavers:

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/333570-212433-kerry-says-strong-offense-gives-ducks-slight-edge-

I think Herbert – being from Eugene and knowing what a big game this is to both schools – could have some jitters playing in his first CW in a sold out and loud Reser. I hope so. McM should be pretty calm and cool, enjoying watching Nall and Pierce run, and finding open receivers as a result.

I say it’s a pick ’em game and haven’t come up with a score prediction. High 30’s seems reasonable.

I do think a loss is more damaging to UO and its staff than to OSU so I expect Helfrich should be puckered, Andersen feeling relaxed and aggressive. If Helfrich and Herbert are jittery, that could be enough for a depleted OSU D to enjoy some turnovers and provide the difference. Nall will be looking to run through, over, and stiff-arming anything green and yellow. Or whatever colors the Ducks wear.

    Should be enjoyable to watch.

    • Utah ain’t exactly an easy place to play either, yet he did just fine.

I’m hoping herbert has a bad day too, but beavers need to play above their talent level.

And hopefully the reser crowd us a bit less… mormony

  23. 4* LB Rahyme Johnson is visiting this week now also. Will be interesting if we could land another player that both Oregon and Nebraska were coveting.

  24. The Ducks appear to have serious problems with their defensive line (losing both starting tackles over the past couple of weeks, and previously losing several other defensive linemen). http://registerguard.com/rg/sports/35018979-81/thin-defensive-line-gets-thinner.html.csp#

Meanwhile, the O-line for the Beavers has become one of the team’s best units over the past few weeks.

If the O-line, Nall, and Pierce can stay healthy thru Saturday afternoon, there is reason to expect that the Beaver run game will present big problems for the Ducks, and that OSU will be able to use the run game to control the pace and keep the Duck offense on the sideline.

This is the year that OSU ends the Ducks’ Civil War winning streak. Go Beavs!

    • They’re already one of the worst run Ds in the country. The only reason they’re not the worst is because some teams get a Riley idea in their heads and think that passing the ball would fool them… because they’re one of the worst run Ds in the country, and they need to be fooled.

Do they have anyone named Okafor on their D?

  25. I really like Nigel Burton on the CSN Beaver shows and P12 Network. Sort of fits the Neuheisel mould of being able to break things down with a sense of humor, and is probably more suited for a media job than coaching.

    • Not sure where you live Scotty, but Burton recently picked up a co-host spot on Portland radio 620’s “Rip City Mornings” show. I didn’t care for the show much before he started, but since he joined he’s been my favorite radio host to listen to in the mornings. He’s really good in these media spots

    • I don’t think Burton was as bad a coach as he was made out to be at PSU by some. Barnum seemed to catch lighting in a bottle last year with Burton’s players, but the Viks kind of sucked this year. Let’s see what Barnum does long term and then compare to Burton.

  26. Happy Thanksgiving fellow water rodents!
Sporting week off to a great start as my #2 Gopher volleyball babes beat #1 Nebraska with my two cornsucker siblings watching in my living room. Really a phenomenal match between two great squads. Go Rodents!

    • They played poorly, utah would run and run then get spooked and start passing. Several times utah would get first downs running with Oregon loading the box, then just forget they were a more physical team and kill drives by passing. The worst was utah got burned by trying to stay in man coverage on defense. Every time they were in man it seemed like oregon would get a first down. It was like utah wasn’t prepared or had a terrible game plan that they couldn’t change.

      • Yeah I watched the second half and that’s exactly what I saw. Utah would decide they needed to start passing for whatever reason and either kill their drive or go three and out.

  27. Kind of tired of the hype in the media about the Ducks win. I guess it speaks to how fast they fell. It was a nice win, but Utah is not exactly an offensive juggernaut and they already had one bad loss to Cal in a similiar scenario.

    • I never understood the Aunt Patty thing, either. It’s stupid.

He’s a good coach. Some on AB wanted him over Riley and people called them/us crazy, but he’s a better coach. Not sure he’d fit, personality wise, but maybe since Pullman isn’t much different.

I liked Chip Kelly as well. The quirky/mad genius coaches are intriguing. GA is a bit quirky as well.

          • agree with both of you.

And Angry I don’t think Leach would be well received in Corvallis.

Was listening to the fox sports radio broadcast this morning and the host filling in for Clay Travis says Leach is the hardest coach to get a read on. Is he a lifer in Pullman or would he take the first ticket out of there if an opportunity came up?

I kind of agree. I think he enjoys being an oddball and doesn’t give two shits what anyone thinks of him. Probably why I like him, other than the fact he’s been a successful coach that has turned around two programs now.

Would his personality and schtick be a fit at an SEC school? He’s also from California with a law degree from Pepperdine and another degree from BYU.

          • He seems like the anti-good ol boy so the deep south seems like a bad fit. The northwest is quirky by nature and WSU had no preexisting identity so he could go there and make it his own. So far so good.

  28. Went off the res and listened to a Sprague/Mama podcast. Mama says, without qualification, that if McM goes down in the CW then Moran’s redshirt will be burned. With Blount listed as probable I just can’t see that happening.
That said, I don’t think it would be a big deal if the Moran shirt came off; chances of him being so great that the Beavs are cryin’ for a fourth full year are very slim, IMHO. Thoughts?

    • I’ve heard nothing but negatives about Moran, so I wouldn’t care too much (though obviously it’s always a terrible idea to waste a RS for one game. GA should throw Bolden or someone in there). My gut is that he’ll be moved to safety. I base this on very limited data about how he looks in practice, and the fact no other school offered him as a QB, and many were interested in him as a safety.

  29. Watching lsu beat Texas a&m. The big news is coach o most likely won’t be hired on as full time head coach. Info leaked that Houston’s coach is working on a deal.

      • LSU Florida was an entertaining game. It went down to the last play of the game. Florida made a goal line stand. (Of course there was nothing else on.).

      • I’ve always liked lsu (30+ years). It’s definitely crap now, years ago it wasn’t.I love the environment of the games(70,000+) people at their games. Wish the beavs could accomplish something like that but really with a fully renovated Reser stadium I see 50k as a ceiling. Comparing what I’ve seen in the pac this year vs the sec I honestly think the pac players are better and play with more intensity. This is overall not one team or single player comparisons. I guess my bottom line is I love football (played from pee wee league all the way through high school, state champs my senior year too) and if it’s on I will watch it no matter how bad it is. I like to analyze the plays and figure out what might work better etc…if I wasn’t getting to old I’d seriously consider coaching…

        • There are teams that I always root against. Why is that? Jealousy? Despise the coach, I don’t know.

          Teams I route against:

          Ducks
          LSU
          Lakers
          Alabama
          UCLA
SEC – when playing anyone else.
          Dallas Cowboys
          LADodgers

          Washington State

          • I totally get not liking teams for no apparent reason. swap out lsu for Michigan and the huskies for WSU and that’s pretty much my list of teams to root against.also add Boise state, I can’t stand them and their stupid smurf turf. I wish it was as simple as my youngest girl makes it. She loves northwestern because they are purple and the fans wear purple foam paws on their hands. Every Saturday she asks if I’m going to watch the purple paws lol

        • Okay cool. The reason I ask is that on all the free stations in CA they’ll show SEC games. I turn them off immediately. Just no interest at all. I’d be more interested in watching the Big10 or Big12. I assume it’s the networks shoving “SEC is superior football” down our throats and trying to force us to watch these games. When I do try to watch, the QB play is so atrocious I turn it off after maybe one drive. I mean to me SEC football looks like the 2015 Beavs vs the 2016 Beavs and I get enough of that on Saturdays.

    • If I remember correctly, he saw what Cooks was doing in practice and modeled his work ethic after that(staying after to catch balls etc)He just doesn’t have the same skill set that Cooks had. I think he might end up playing on Sundays, doing the special teams gig. Too many drops to get drafted as a wr.

  30. If Andersen is seriously considering an “air raid” approach at OSU, the WSU/UW game might have a bit more interest to beaver fans. It should be an interesting game anyway from both the implications for the league and for the contrast in coaching styles.

  31. Thinking Beavs play well, but not enough to overcome some early mistakes — Duck’s Herbert takes advantage. Beavs get behind by a couple scores early, and can’t quite make the comeback.

    38-27 Shmucks

  32. Noticed the huge recruit visitor list for the CW on the twitter account. A victory this weekend could solidify the best class (potentially) that OSU has seen in a long time. Seems like the staff is making huge strides and selling the early PT really well. One thing about this staff is that they can definitely recruit. Gonna be HUGE weekend! Go beavs!!!

P.S. Props to Nicebeav and whoever else is responsible for the recruit info! Way better than BeaverBlitz and Mamma Machado.

    • Ya im excited about how this class will finish out. I like the chances with pili, evans, calvin, and to get one of the juco cbs. I know nice beav said that he didn’t feel good about getting nixon but it seems like in his tweets he might actually be into it. Also saw he have that 4 star lb that the ducks r after coming. Who do u like our chances of landing nicebeav?

      • I wouldnt be surprised to see Lane commit during his visit.
Nixon has been hot amd cold all along. We do have a few things on our side with Villy here, as well as Evans apparently interested, so i’m not counting Nixon out. He’s just a tough guy to get a read on. If Nixon comes, that could help to land Johnson (the 4* LB you mentioned)
I really like our chances with Calvin.

I also think we get Jordan Agasiva, the JC OL from Pima who has silently pretty quiet about his recruitment.

Si now it becomes a numbers game. How many of our guys will be coming in as early enrollees/class of 2016?
I think Hodgins/Taylor/Green are potential 2016 guys. Maybe 1 or more JC guys too? That would help go a long ways in making this class a little larger. Think this year will be the biggest new crop of player we’ve seen OSU sign in 1 cycle.

  33. As posted by a Husker fan…

“Remember all the Oregon State fans told everyone Mike Riley would get you wins, but not in big games? Welp. #Huskers”

    • Have they realized their schedule is soft as Charmin, wins have come against crappy teams almost all at home, and they really have no good wins this year yet?

      • What’s their schedule like next year? Hopefully harder. He’ll have to break in a new QB. They’ll see reality. This year is about as good as it gets for NE with a senior QB and cake schedule.

          • Pretty easy, but breaking in a new QB will result in some loses.
Is NE’s schedule easy every year? That’s a big fish in a small pond job. If you can’t win 9 jobs there each year given the competition in their half of the division, you really suck.

        • 2017 first, 2016 second
          Swap:
          Arkansas State for Wyoming
          Northern Illinois for Fresno State
          Play Oregon Again
          Rutgers for Indiana
          Penn State for Maryland

Probably slightly more difficult as it is. No way Ducks are as bad next year with Herbert at the helm as a Soph.

  34. I feel pretty good about my NE calls on the 247 forum.

So going through the rest of the schedule, this is how I see it:

Purdue: probably a win. Riley is good for two eggs a year, so trying to spot them is tough. This could be one of them, but I’m more inclined to think Maryland and Iowa are the eggs. Still, only a 60% chance to win this game.

Wisconsin: probably a loss. Riley is good for one big “upset” per season. Oregon seemed like that game at the time. I don’t see Riley winning this game. He’s never ready for big games, especially on the road.

    tOSU: loss

Minn: Should be a win. MN’s QB looked really bad vs our team and they were generally nonexplosive.

MD: Tricky game. This could be one of the eggs.

Iowa: I think this will definitely be one of the eggs.

So I have losses to tOSU, Iowa, and then several 50/50 games in Maryland and Wisconsin. So between 2 to 4 losses. My gut says he’ll lose 4 and fade pretty hard, but it’s possible he only loses 3.

  35. Wazzu has failed twice on 4th and goal in this game. Too bad thheyve been playing catchup and feeling the need to score tds, becausr those 2 field goals would be nice to have now

  36. Husker boards starting to read like Beaver boards during Riley’s slide. Swap dates and school names, and you wouldn’t be able to tell them apart haha. Common themes: fire Bruce Read, Banker sucks, why can’t they tackle anyone… #TPB

    • Are they even going to be ranked after this one?

Trust me, an hour after this blowout, a creaton will start spinning the “we won 9 games things are looking up” narrative and people will begin to fell good. Those poor bastards.

      • I liked a shot early in the game where Riley was standing in front of the heaters. He always looks so cold and stooped over once games get into October/November.

  37. I liked watching that bullshit “amazing 4th quarter comeback team” narrative shattered today. The truth is Smilin’ Mike came back against a lot of shitty teams that they had no reason being behind against in the first place. Also, what was with the cameras on Riley for most of the game? They hardly showed Frenetz until the end of the game.

    • NE played okay most of the year, tbh, but they’re not the 16th best team, and Riley definitely benefited from the easy schedule and 28 seniors. It’s going to be a train wreck with Riley breaking in a new QB next year and his players (soft). In typical Riley fashion, he barely gave his backups any playing time knowing full well many graduate. Lol. Those poor bastards. OSU is in a much better position despite the records this year.

      • I don’t know, I think they had better talent then most of the teams in the Big 10 West. They only maybe played above their talent against Wisconsin on the road. The Beavs probably would have been bowl eligible if they were in that division!

  38. Beavs will need to jump out ahead early tomorrow if they want to win. Likely wouldn’t win in a slugfest. Can’t envision the Beavs making a 4th quarter comeback.

    • It’s hilarious reading their message boards.

When he got hired, every one of those corn shucking idiots had shit to say like ‘Riley only sucked because it was shitty Oregon State players.’ Yeah, how about now? Frankly, this Nebraska team compares pretty well to a lot of our teams over the years. Teams that a better coach could have gotten to a Rose Bowl.

  39. if you want to have some fun, tune in to the 1620 in Omaha for the post game “over reaction.” right out of the gate: they’re just shocked Iowa put 40 on them

  40. For some reason, we can’t get it through their thick heads that they aren’t going to get any more wins swapping out Pelini and getting Riley.

  41. John Bledsoe just announced he’s walking on at WSU instead of taking a achollie to Northern Arizona….I predict he is starting for the Cougs in 3 years.

  42. So much for the narrative that Riley’s teams start slow and finish strong.

They’re currently ripping on the line play on both sides of the ball, IE lack of a pass rush on D, lack of ability to run the ball due to poor O line play. Nothing we’ve never heard or seen before

  43. Big Red commentator most disappointed in the “laid back body language.” Now where have we seen and heard that before? Team emotionally tired. Team came out flat. coaches did nothing to change the energy dynamic

  44. uh-oh. Commentator talking about the need to find an identity! five year rebuilding project, he says. need to get back to Nebraska’s roots–physical play

    • Can someone explain how they are rebuilding when Pelini won at least 9 games every year during his 7 years as head coach?

      • They’re not, but already on the forums people are saying Riley needs his players in the program, so I assume they mean that. Funny thing is Riley’s players are soft, so they’re not going to like when his guys are in there.

  45. they just threw out the Nebraska is still trying to find their identity narrative. Riley’s teams never find it. Listening to these yahoo’s is giving me bad flashbacks

  46. This is the greatest stuff I’ve ever heard…….it’s like knowing for a fact the earth is round in 1350 ad. But everyone else thinks I’m nuts because the church told them it was flat.

    • Next guy calls for Read to be fired; also complains that the run was abandoned too soon.
Wants a jacket for Riley, says he looks like he is freezing his tail off.

  47. PHIL STEELE REPORT:

    Oregon (Offense: 12 / Defense: 82 / Special Teams: 60) – Game Grade Average 83.2 (#61)
    Projected Final Record: 4-8

    Oregon State (Offense: 85 / Defense: 71 / Special Teams: 66) – Game Grade Average 79.3 (#73)
    Projected Final Record: 4-8

It’s the Civil War & neither team is going bowling for the 1st time since 1996! Oregon has beaten Oregon State 8 straight (5-3 ATS) while the visitor is 9-1 ATS. Last year Oregon was on its way to a rout 31-7 leading at the half but Oregon State showed fight in the 2nd half & only lost 52-42 (+35). Oregon enters off a surprising 30-28 (+14) win at Utah. There were 6 lead changes & Oregon went 75 yards in 10 plays, getting the game-winning TD on a 17 yard pass from Herbert to Carrington with :02 left. Oregon had a 573-453 yard edge. Oregon State enters off a 42-17 (-3.5) win over Arizona. QB McMaryion hit 16-19-265-5-1 & RB Nall chipped in 124 (5.4) rushing. The Ducks are -90 ypg in Pac-12 play while the Beavers are -82. Oregon has the #12 offense, averaging 108 ypg more than their foes allow. Oregon State allows 222 (5.3) rushing ypg & Oregon averages 231 (5.5) rushing ypg. The Ducks’ defense has been atrocious, allowing 112 ypg more than their opponents average (#125) & RB Nall is healthy again for Oregon State. My computer is calling for a high scoring affair & I totally agree, making this my ‘High Scoring Play Of The Week.’

  48. “Steve”: “team didn’t really improve from last year” “need new special teams coach.” “stronger offensive line play needed.”

      • Those guys sound like apologists. “Tackling and line play sucks” Yeah maybe it’s because bear crawls and no tackling in practice helps in those departments. It’s the exact shit we saw here…..and only one common denominator.

    • Radio comedy gold everytime Biley lays an egg, now that he’s not doing it on our lawn. Love the guy who wants to buy Riley a coat hahaha! For extra fun, look for podcasts from last year’s loss to Purdue :D

  49. Big Red Commentator: “every play looks the same”. caller: “laughing and joking on the sideline;” “where have all the competitors gone?”

  50. So, Banker has said about Iowa, “I bet their practices are a blood bath on both sides of the ball”….Host tears his hair out complaining that Huskers don’t practice well, too cushy attitude toward players at Neb.

ADDED: Ten minutes later host is still out of his mind because how you practice is within your control if you are a coach.

  51. player from 05 Nebraska team calls in, started to believe after 5-6 games, and thought their ranking was legit until Wisconsin game when “something changed” where the team let that loss beat them more than one time. commentator re: Banker: if you want to play better, practice harder, practice toughness. Current staff isn’t willing to do this.

  52. alum from Colorado calls in: “no mojo on offense”, “kids aren’t ready to play” “coach walking around all day looking like he’s cold” leaving all the coaching to the assistants. No tempo on offense; puts players in tough spot. tired of hearing about what Riley did at OSU

  53. Caller Jeff from Colorado is all over Riley. “a coach who wanders around like he wants to be inside out of the cold and never takes his hands out of his pockets…..should be patting a kid on the shoulder once in a while.”

  54. Caller on defense: “another stanker from Banker”
On special teams: “there’s a man in Lincoln who’s straight-up embezzling from the State of Nebraska”

    LOL #TPB

  55. Just got a commit from Jaylon Lane, JUCO CB, former 4* out of high school with a couple dozen offers.

Jaylon De’undre Lane ?@Jlane1400blk 19m19 minutes ago Corvallis, OR
I’M OFFICIALLY COMMITTED TO OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY #GoBeavs ????

  56. So accounting for mission players (2 correct?) and the odds that at least a couple don’t qualify its looking like they’ve got 7-8 more spots left in the class (assuming they can take a full class which likely means having several guys leave the team). Considering some of the best talent is still uncommitted are their any players that are known candidates to greyshirt?

  57. Still listening to the radio show from Omaha; host claims he has received tweet from player who agrees that practices are far too soft. Not clear if a current or recent player. Sounds like this host has been on a tirade vs soft practices for some time.

Caller mentions the number of what GA calls “administrative penalties” …Host responds that pressure in practice will help in that area.

ADDED: You can’t make this stuff up! Final caller says he thinks Riley is really smart and doesn’t want to show improvement too quickly; that he is laying the groundwork for retirement and wants to give Langs the opportunity to take over with room left to grow!! This guy sounded serious!! TPB!
