Final Thoughts on CSU Game

102

I still don’t have a feel for the score. Game 1s are always hard to predict because we have so many new guys whom we’ve never seen play. Luton is obviously the key one. If he’s good, I think we win this one pretty easily. If he’s bad to mediocre it will be a struggle.

People are putting a lot of emphasis on the run game. I get it we have great backs on paper and agree with that, but it seems people are assuming it’s a given they put up 300 yards and 4TDs on CSU. I’d tame that until we see these guys in action.

People are discounting the flight, altitude, and new stadium for CSU. All work against OSU.

I like OSU’s mindset in all the interviews I’ve seen. They seem confident without saying as much. A little giddy, even, almost like they think they’re onto something special this year. With so many young players and guys learning new positions that is likely a year off, but it’s good to see the players believing in themselves. That’s contagious and an intangible. Problem is if things don’t go your way, with so many young guys it can snowball.

I’ve thought about the game a lot, and gun to my head prediction: 35-34 CSU

But, for those of you thinking we win big, I get it and can see why you think that. If Luton has under 2INT and is efficient I can see us winning comfortably. Very important to get off to a good start. Can’t be lethargic and whatnot. The flight leaving today doesn’t help in that regard. This will all be interesting. Many dynamics at play tomorrow. Go Beavs!

  1. I understand where you are coming from. I am confident in this game, but I think our margin is 1 turnover. If we are -1 or better i believe OS wins. If we aren’t careless with the ball we have superior athletes and should win.

  2. Jim Wilson and Ron Callan (sp) have been in Ft. Collins since yesterday, Jim says on Joe Beav Show that the team was “originally” planning to fly on Thursday. No explanation for the change to Friday.

He predicts “maybe 20%” two back sets and expects passing out of many of those sets. I’d like to see more than 20%, but do see the possible plus to pass protection here.

      • Seems like their first exposure to the Colorado State field will be game day, unless they find time to squeeze in a walk through tonight. Wonder if this was a budget move? Hope not

      • I have always been under the impression that when going to a high altitude place for a sporting event that you either want to basically “get right off the bus” and play or you want to acclimate for a week or so…

IOW, leaving Friday is BETTER than leaving Thursday, IMHO.

If you don;t have a week or two to acclimate then the sooner the better

        • The idea being that if you have a FULL week or two to acclimate that is best, but trying to perform DURING acclimation is the hardest (as you “sea level” red blood cells break down due to being under oxygenated, but are not yet replaced by new acclimated ones…

So you want to arrive right before you perform, or a week or two before…

          • There is no acclimation. There is, and there isn’t.

A person can train for months at elevation (+5200′), leave for a period unknown, come back and suffer altitude sickness. It’s more serious above 9000 feet. It just is what it is. You can be a stud 99 times out of 100. But you will suffer from altitude that random once if you don’t live there, not acclimate, live.

And it is apparent as soon as you arrive. It’s not as if physical exertion will trigger it. If you make it through the first half hour without any symptoms, you’re good to go.

          • “Seems they should be able to measure it scientifically and come to a conclusion on the best time to travel.”

Does anyone doubt that the company which owns the ucks has studied this factor thoroughly? Not that the swooshbags would willingly share their conclusions; maybe watch the travel approach taken by slick willie to gain some insight?

          • That has to do with oxygen and how football players are inefficient at using it.

Not many sports have the problems that football has at altitude due to oxygen. Football is also stupid in that way.

    • With this backfield, 2 back sets could be really effective, Multiple options, screen passes, pass protection, play action, etc. And, defenses don’t see them much anymore.

    • In my opinion people are too high on Colorado state. They were mediocre last year and did nothing to make huge improvements this year. I don’t see were all the love is coming from.

      Beavs by 14.

      • I haven’t seen them play in many many years. Saw them maybe once ever when I tuned into a rivalry game vs CO. So I have zero reference. It’s why a prediction is hard. Combined with never seeing Luton it’s like a bit WTF game.

    • Final 4 team? That’s crazy. They’d have to beat Alabama on the road to do that. I guess if all goes right, the Beavs could be a final 4 team too.

I do buy that CSU could be a dark horse New Years day(non playoff) bowl team, as one of the non P5 teams most likely to get in, but no way they make the playoffs

  3. Csu returns two starters on defense from a defense that gave up 60 something to Idaho last year in the spud Bowl. We’ve seen what OSU did to bad defensive teams in Oregon and Arizona with just an average to decent QB in MM. If Luton throws for even 250 and a couple of tds, the beavs win 38-20…no way csu offense is as good as last year’s Oregon offense and beavs held ducks to 24. I just don’t see csu being able to hang with the beavs physically. Beavs opening play if ball on @25-30 yard line….play action to Nall and long bomb to villamin for a td….if beavs can’t physically dominate this game, it’s going to be a very long season….38-20 beavs and money stomps the crap out of loud mouth racist mac Gregor.

    • The bowl game was somewhat of an abberation…….their defense was actually pretty dang good the second half of the season, and I belive they return 8 starters.

We are a 4 point dog……I’m not sure how accurate this line really is……they are christening a brand new stadium….it’s a sellout…..it’ll be super loud…..high elevation…..we are prolly a lil more athletic across the board, but we have an unproven (D1 level) QB…..we have question marks on the O line, D line, and secondary…..they have very solid players at the offensive skill positions…..they return two O linemen I believe.

Bottomline, we haven’t won a road game since ’14! This is a huge test in a hostile environment…..I wouldn’t assume the Beavs will cruise to an easy victory….it’s certainly possible, but unlikely……this is a tough game!

      • According to The Fan 1080, they said only two starters return on the defensive side of the ball, but I don’t know how accurate that is. Regardless, if the Beavs can’t control the LOS and physically take care of business, then it will be a long, long season. I stand by my 38-20 prediction…..Luton looks very, very good and the Beavs are solid offensively.

      • Luton didn’t die of dysentery. Maybe that’s all we need to know about him. He’s tough physically and mentally. He’ll make a mistake or two maybe but he’ll get the job done.

I’m not terribly impressed by factoids regarding csu defense the second half of the season. They played against a bunch of run-heavy MW teams (Fresno st. hardly had an offense). Contain Stevens and limit his potency and the rest falls in place.

  4. Bright Ugwoegbu on the CSU QB,

“He’s a pretty good thrower. I haven’t seen anything bad that he does out of all the film that I’ve watched,” Ugwoegbu said. “The only thing is that he’s very confident in his arm and I think that we’re going to make him pay for how much he trusts himself trying to squeeze balls into certain windows. I have a great confidence in our DBs and our DBs are much better than the Mountain West DBs, so we’ll see what we can do with that.”

OK, all you sports psychologists, if this makes the CSU bulletin board, what is the effect? Does Stevens force some throws to show he can thread the needle? Does he forego that type throw to avoid the chance for embarrassment?

  5. From someone I trust on why Beav fans are so confident about this game:

They’re arrogant and stupid. If this was Boise State at Boise, we’d be scared.
But this is a better team than Boise St, playing in a new stadium, and a mile high.
I still think we lose by 5-10, but i’d love to be wrong.

I kinda agree. CSU would likely beat BSU this year.

That’s why to me, a lot falls on Luton. He has to be good when CSU stacks the box. If he is, we can pull out a win.

The “we out athlete them” thing…I get it, but I mean…eh. It’s a tough first game. We can win it for sure but the lack of respect is concerning. I hope the team doesn’t feel that way.

      • Yeah… um….

I’ve spent a lot of time in FC and on the Poudre. I think this is probably a neophyte CSU type who is just amped for the season.

    • Maybe confused with UO? It’s not like that doesn’t happen weekly. As for the confidence thing, to say anybody is confident 100% is a stretch, people on here and other places are mostly positive, I still see a lot of himming and hawing both ways.

  6. As I’ve had a chance to look at this matchup, one thing that I feel fairly certain about…….I don’t see a scenario where it’s an easy win for either team……I think both defenses are underrated, and an afterthought for most people.

For us to win I think our defense will need to make a couple big plays…..pick six or a sack, fumble recovery……whatever, some kind of statement/momentum play or plays that say “hey we play defense at OSU too, we’re not intimidated, and we’re bringin it!”

This is going to be a slugfest, that we NEED to win…..I believe our season relies on it….we must be able to win on the road against a MW opponent in Ando’s 3rd year……doesn’t matter how good CSU thinks they are…..if we want to be a big boy pac 12 program, we have to win these kinds of games, period.

  7. Oregon St. better go in fully expecting they will play a complete game and so what it takes to earn a ‘W’ o start the season. Will be very disappointed if we don’t handle a MWC team even if they are decent. Year 3 is the ‘flip’ year where Beavs need to make a bowl and it starts tomorrow at 11:30. Game may be close but OSU should have the superior talent and physicality to come out on top. Value possession and play smart football using the %’s. Run the ball hard with our bevy of backs and mix in just enough passing to keep CSU honest, keep the chains moving and get a few 10-17 yard plays through the air. Finish drives with TDs with Nall, Tyner or Togiai that set the tone of confidence. Do these things and Beavs should pull out the W.

    Oregon St. 31, CSU 27

  8. My 2 major concerns are the lines. As I recall there was a lot concern re the of depth/talent at the DT position and when Evans was signed it brought about a sigh of relief. Evans isn’t with the team and the DE left so what does that mean? The stable of RBs looks very promising but if the OL can’t make holes for them then we’re left hoping the passing game can click. It seemed like the receiving core wasn’t very good last year, how much of that was because of the QB situation and how much was because the talent wasn’t there. Can the OL give the QB the protection he needs……..

Can the OC call a game that complements the talent of the kids that are on the field…..

Now all I have to do is find a stream so I can watch it.

    Go Beavs!

      • Logical, but won’t CSU put 8 in the box and make Luton win the game?

Can he win a game? Or is our run game good enough to beat a stacked box?

To me Togia is more a key than the RBs. RBs should get some yards, but I figure CSU will stack the box and limit that to a degree, and should allow Togia free over the middle…IF Luton can get him the ball. Hope so.

        • I don’t think it matters thats they stack the box. Their dl are giving up about 30 lbs to the beavs ol. It should really make wear them down the second half.

I watched csu’s games against air force and idaho and am not impressed. If they make a new years bowl it will be because of tgeir weak conference. Im sure they’ll score points but our d is far superior imo and from what i take from the coaches.

When they do stack the box it makes them vulnerable which i think luton will hurt them. Im more concerned with luton with 8 dropped back than in the box.

          • If they do stack the box, Nall can break tackles and will surprise with his game speed, Tyner has special speed, and Tyler’s moves draw comparisons to Quizz Rodgers. Either of these three get through then you have the chance to run off some pretty good chunks of new CSU field turf.

Pierce runs tough, Johnson is a brute who already looks like he belongs on an NFL roster. Imagine being carried 5 yards by Nall, chasing down Tyner and Tyler, then having to bring down Johnson. Plus, most of them can catch.

OSU will have 2 TEs to throw to that should have physical advantages over CSU.

If newbies Houston & Luton can do their job, OSU should be able to use 4-5 backs, limit the altitude effect on each of them, and give CSU less to cheer about.

  9. I have a game thread scheduled for 11:15 tomorrow. If it doesn’t run for some reason, NB or OB please look into it. Should be good to go, though.

  10. Report from Ft. Collins…
Walking out of a brewpub yesterday wearing a Beav shirt and a short, rotund woman taps me on the shoulder, leans in toward me and starts chomping her front teeth over her lower lip. I ingnore it and she steps in front of me and continues doing it.
    Me…You have a facial tic.
    Her…That’s my best Beaver.
    Me….I bet it is.

  11. ObjCritic laid out our advantage at RB above. Everyone knows we have a good backfield but I think we’re still under appreciating just how good we have it. This could be a historic season based on that committee. We have 3 to 5 backs who have a legitimate shot at making NFL rosters.

Regarding angry’s trusted friend, this team is being picked by some to beat Boise St, but this team isn’t comparable to the Chris Petersen Boise teams that scared us. I get it we still got beat by them last year but I seem to remember particularly terrible QB play by us in that game. We didn’t have a QB capable of throwing the ball more than 5 yards. It was winnable with a decent QB – maybe even with MM.

People generally aren’t overlooking CSU. I won’t be shocked if we lose, but I think we’re a better team, and they seem to be overlooking us somewhat – they have high expectations and we are their 3rd tier non-conference opponent. They almost expect a win and for some reason think having a “brand new on-campus stadium” is a great advantage. Who gives a shit how new it is or where it’s located.

I think we will surprise people this year. The talk will start next week after we win this game without much trouble.

Beavs by 2 TDs with CSU getting a garbage time score.

  12. Fearless prediction.
I saw CSU in person last season in the Twin Cities. They have legit talent, particularly on the offensive side. Two HC’s with SEC ties have brought in some good players and established a c
solid winning foundation. They have compromised the new stadium factor a bit by TV whoring
the start time. It should have been 7 PM to maximize the party and tailgating.
This will be a legit test. Year three of GA= win small. His players and systems are in place.
This is all Luton. He has to play a clean game. Coin flip.
    Beavs 31-28

I spoke at length with a Ram booster at a bar last evening. He said the one glaring weakness
of their team is at CB. “Can’t cover past 15 yards.”

    • A buddy of mine is a Georgia grad and rabid fan, and he told me CSU has their OC now as a coach (head coach?) and “will score some points”. He had no feel for who would win but did feel CSU would put up points.

Agree from what I read CSU’s secondary sounds weak, and it’s part of the reason I think Luton is a key, the other being CSU will likely stack the box if we start running it well, which I expect we do.

  13. This Florida A&M Rattler team has some decent players. Their WR just made a nice play (catch and juke) for a TD. Need to keep recruiting Florida hard. That guy could play for the Beavs.

  14. Does anyone else think having OSU under the beaver logo is a pretty good mark and would look good on shirts and in the middle of Reser? Seems like it would more fully sell the Oregon State program.
