Cory Hall Discussion

There’s a big movement to hire Cory Hall as HC because he had two good games. I get it.

The positives:

  1. Played their two best games.
  2. Went to the ground game/good game plan.
  3. Good motivator, players are responding.
  4. Young, black, energetic.
  5. Very impressive how he’s held things together after a traumatic change.

Negatives:

  1. His RB was not coached to have two hands on the ball with 2 minutes left vs the #20 team in the Country.
  2. Hall is simply running the offense we all expected. Things might have looked this way earlier.
  3. Colorado is a bad team; Stanford was in a malaise looking past us toward their big game vs WSU next week.
  4. Botched clock management vs CO, and then last night he didn’t get the Timeout.
  5. Small sample, and fans tend to fall for the coach who says all the right things (e.g. GA), yet it doesn’t mean they’re a good coach.

So, personally, I like Hall, but I need to see more. His actual in-game coaching moments (The TO, clock management, having the RB put two hands on the ball/fundamentals) he hasn’t impressed. He’s impressed with all the other stuff that isn’t true coaching…

Verdict: worthy of an interview based on these two games. Want to see more improvement with actual nuts and bolts coaching instead of the talking/motivation side. I feel fans are falling for his energy, rhetoric, and motivation too hard. That stuff is all great, but you need a coach who hammers home the fundamentals. Not sure Hall has that level of detail yet.

  1. Definitely think he’s earned the interview, but I think he also needs to step back and reassess the situation as soon as the season ends. Does he think he’s ready to be a head coach? Does he maybe realize that he could benefit from a year or 2 in a DC role, just to get a better grasp of an elevated role and the different commitments that come with that new role?

The players and fans are doing their best to force Barnes hand in this decision. Something tells me Barnes and Hall already have a plan in place for Hall next year, which does not include being the head coach. I do think we need to keep him around if at all possible. We wouldnt be promoting the hell out of his speeches and blasting his quotes all over social media if we didnt think he would be around next season.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out to be HC Beau Baldwin with Cory Hall at DC and Assistant HC and Eastern Washington’s Aaron Best as OC.

Either way, as momentum for Hall builds, it makes Barnes job trickier, which is why I think Hall needs to publicly stand behind whatever decision Barnes and Oregon State come to. If that means coming out and saying “I want to be the HC, but I know I’m not ready yet. My time will come” I think that would help smooth the transistion.

    • I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out to be HC Beau Baldwin with Cory Hall at DC

Agree. There’s good reason to believe that’s how it will play out, at least with Hall on as DC and a pay bump for that job.

    • This would be pretty close to my dream staff. I’d like to steal Michael Johnson away from Oregon for some kind of role though. Maybe Hall is just DC without the AHC roll (coordinator is a big enough job) and you could snag Johnson with that AHC title/QB coach role.

(And no, its not just to get Johnson’s kid to OSU (although that would be a nice bonus), I’ve heard some really good things about Johnson from 2 kids playing at UO that I know personally).

    • No way does he get the job. He doesn’t have enough coaching experience, let alone Head Coaching experience. Can you put together a staff? Small coaching tree. Can he put together a program, glad hand the boosters, recruit, offseason program, etc He has been a DB coach at D1 level for 3 seasons? Has he earned DC position? possible.

Will he be HC someday? Definitely YES just not right now for a program who has a major decision on its hands.

      • Some people want a guy who has been a coordinator at this level for half a season. Hall will have a half season of running a P5 program when done. And he will have had to take the team through the administratively most work-intensive part of the academic schedule.

If he can run it all ad hoc and succeed, I would have faith he can do it as a regular.

  2. Speaking of fans who fell for rhetoric and energy…Taggart is being exposed as the fraud he is. Oregon might be worse than us at this point. It’s going to be interesting to see how that plays out. I’d be surprised if that recruiting class sticks together. Their QB was the only thing holding that team together. Shows again how important QB is.

    • I’ll take our TE commit over anyone holding any other recruiting class together.

Reportedly, he’s as good in the classroom as he is a public leader.

  3. It’s probably not the case that Nall’s not being coached to use both hands. Regardless, that would be more on the RB coach and OC than Hall. Maybe Quizz can get on the phone.

  4. What I saw was the Stanford player had good/great leverage and ripped the ball lose. I don’t know if anyone could have kept from fumbling.

    • Watch the replay again. The Stanford lineman plants the OSU lineman to ground. As he falls, his leg whips up and kicks the ball out of Nall’s hold. Just god awful luck.

    • So many different perspectives…watch Netflix – Blue Mountain State “The fingering” for a hilarious lesson on perspectives and coaching strategy…

  5. So Smalls our TE commit says we have another one. Players and commits seem to be #HallIn. Next week on the road at Cal just got more interesting. I’m also curious what David Shaw said to Cory Hall after the game. Shaw cover his head with his play calling sheet.

  6. FWIW, on his radio show this morning, Nigel Burton explained the fumble as a result of Stanford’s noseguard busting through the line and disrupting the timing of the play. Nall was trying to push him (or maybe his own blocker) out of the way with one hand and the ball got punched away.

I know it’s always easier to blame the ball carrier (or receiver or quarterback on an interception) but the offensive line is often the root cause of a play going wrong.

    • Nall needs to accept that he isn’t gonna get anywhere in that situation, keep 2 hands on the ball, and get to the ground.

The line missing its blocks does not excuse Nall.

      • Yup. Yards are inconsequential at that point. As #rowtheboat would say, the ball is the program.
Only thing you can’t do is turn it over at that point.

    • I’ve got my own take on the way this play turned out. If you will recall, after the preceding play Stanford called time out, and I think it may have been a full timeout. Regardless, the key thing is that in the seconds just before the pivotal play occurred the students in the south end zone started a rump version of “let’s go beav-ers.” Garretson tried to hush them by the common waving motion but the play clock was burning toward zero. Thus, I’m not sure either Nall or the Center, or some other lineman, heard the hand “clap” signaling the snap count, which, while I’m at it, annoys me to no end anyway.

    • I just talked to a friend who watched it last night. He says we actually kinda ran power on that play, But Wily-Matagi treated his wham block on #66 like a chip, and he was thrown into Nall, dislodging the ball. That’s where I saw all the bouncing back and forth.

      Now I’m just sad.

  7. I gotta say, the parallel’s between how Hall got this job and how Swinney got the job at Clemson are sort of odd. Swinney had never been more than a position coach, got the gig over coordinators with more experience, and it worked out pretty well at Clemson.

    Maybe Hall is OSU’s Swinney?

  8. Pros:
1-5: The D (and team) played their best game last night. I wasn’t sure about the CU game because they just suck, or so I thought. But the motivation had them push through the wall in the second half of both. So I would put the CU game as our first complete game, albeit against a weak opponent. The O just is what it is right now. When we play from a base set, it’s pretty stale. And second half adjustments are nowhere to be seen.

    Cons:
    1. I’ll have to watch when I get home, but I don’t think Nall had the ball before he got hit. I could have sworn it looked like he threw it at the defender and it bounced back to him.
    2. This isn’t the O we expected. It’s varied a little more with Nall taking more direct snaps. But there’s no power in many appropriate situations. The whole second half was just maddening.
    3. Agreed on CU, but #4 in your pros makes that game a plus. Stanford was in a malaise because they expected us to lay a Duck on them. They were pretty chirpy in the second half. But you probably couldn’t hear them with all nineteen people and a bunch of girl scouts in the stands screaming. Our D was running some blitz lanes I haven’t seen thus far. I think Hall may have had more to do with the D last night than anyone has guessed.
    4. Meh… it happens. At least he’s engaged enough to be attentive to the O and boisterous enough to get someone’s attention. He’s already better than most we’ve seen at OSU.
    5. Small sample, yes. Let’s not get too excited until we see how this all translates to a road game. The concerns for me with him is his administrative capability. He gets to make sure all these kids make all their grades while attending all their classes, study halls, meetings and meals. Then he gets to take it all on the road and enforce his expectations while also motivating the team yet again.

I think he keeps it together because he had to learn to be disciplined as a pro. How that translates to his road management will show in the effort the team displays on the field.

The fear now is that he does all this and plucks a couple wins despite our O. I don’t see how the next coach not named Hall captures the hearts in that locker room if they all succeed and give effort on and off the field in response to Hall’s leadership now. That sideline was buzzing most of the game.

Unless he and Barnes have a plan in place, Barnes may have screwed himself.

But yeah… four games left… three on the road.

If we get that effort and energy on and off the field, then it’s going to be hard to disagree that he should get the job, and we just need to go out and get a decent OC… and maybe someone to teach Noah how to catch more than 50% of his targets.

    • #5? Delegate. Why would he or any head coach, personally keep track of menus, grades, etc. Oversee, yes, but he shouldn’t need to count beans.

      • There’s a fine line between paying attention to detail and micro-management. But when asked about the details, a coach should know every aspect.

That’s something that bugged me about GA. He said the right things, but the devil occupied his details because he did think that just delegating them was the way to go. He had no right to get upset about it, because he was the head coach who didn’t direct those same details.

    • Yeah… tell me why you all insisted on creating a narrative where he was those things. It just wasn’t a fair thing to do to him… or to our team, for that matter.

          • Apostate! I will watch you squirm as McM leads the mighty Bulldogs to the MWC championship, which that and a dollar gets you a dollar i guess?

          • *MWC West championship

No CSU, USU or AFA on their schedule. All three would be better than what they’ve faced thus far.

I still don’t know if they win any of their last three games. @Hi is interesting because of the start time. I would chalk up Wyo and Boise as losses.

I don’t even know if they beat BYU.

        • If I get bored enough I’m going to put McM face on Jesus up on the cross and replace the Romans with beavers just so Angry can have a new wallpaper for his phone.

  9. I love hall so far but we do need a bigger sample to get a better idea of how good/bad he is. If they win on the road, I’m sold. The minimum I’d be happy with is him as DC. I really want to know what Coach Shaw said to him after the game when he was covering his mouth with the play sheet.

  10. Sat behind Cory Hall on Delta to LAX this afternoon. He was very personable and enthusiastic with fans saying hi and wanting photos. Even joked that he was surprised they wanted a photo with him after the loss last night. People were energized by him, he also seemed a little on cloud nine but is running with it.

      • I believe the Class is supposed to be around 17 total ships available. 9 Current Commits (According to Rivals).

Rumors floated here Koch isn’t Solid due to removing Beaver items off of his twitter page

        Cameron Thomas WR Austin, TX
Anthony Spurlock WR New Orleans, LA
Isaiah Smalls TE Los Angeles, CA
        Kase Rogers WR Houston, TX
        Andy Koch DE Corona, CA
        Jake Dukart QB Lake Oswego,
        Spencer Petras QB Kentfield, CA
Isaac Hodgins DT Walnut Creek, CA
        Deshon Wilson DB Hayward, CA

Isaiah Smalls has probably been our best recruiter so far. He the one who said we have 3 silent commits. He’s been going real hard after 4* receiver Crocker who he says is family, and will accompany during Crocker’s official.

  11. Do we have a sense of how hard it was to do what he did? It feels like this team (including the staff) was something of a cluster and he made significant improvements to the chemistry. Maybe that’s the thing is is really good at and it’s something that can be changed quickly to improve the result on the field. In the same way we know very little about him in all the other things a coach has to do. I don’t want Hall to be the rebound girlfriend. This is such an important hire and I’m glad I’m not making the decision but I hope we’re not thinking to much with our hearts.

    • You’re thinking the wrong way.

      GA was the rebound.

Maybe Hall is what we always needed, but we never knew it.

I don’t know, man. That was the most fun I had watching a game at Reser since Swanee jumped on a bench and started yelling.

      • Jack, I have to agree with you. The wife and I enjoyed attending that lossing effort more than a lot of winning games we gave watched in the past (they have been way to few i the recent past) The defense was making some plays the offense didn’t look terrible and you could tell our players would do anything for that coach…GA created what he was looking for ……a galvanized team of brothers…it seems all he had to do was crap on them and leave to create it…. still early but I’m starting to be a Hall believer even if it would be one of the most unorthodox hires in modern football….

  12. I’m not an old time Beaver.. I grew up a Husky fan, but I went to OSU back in 04-05 and I got a spiffy little piece of paper from Corvallis that says I’m smart.. So I really only know Beaver life during the Riley and GA eras..

What Coach Hall has done in three weeks is completely amazing.. and has created an energy that just hasn’t been there since I have been a Beaver fan. This dude could sell snow in Alaska.. The support he has from the current players and recruits is crazy.. This should be a dumpster fire.. Instead, in three weeks, the whole complexion of the program has changed. We have a 1-7 team with a completely insane ex-coach that bailed on everyone mid-season and somehow we’re gaining recruiting momentum.. Coach Hall in a high school kids living room?! With the look, and the NFL background, and that personality.. It’d be like shooting ducks in a pond for him.

Look, I’m a realist.. I know it’s only been two games and they lost both.. I totally get it.. But I’m excited to see this season play out.. and it would not surprise me at all if we win 2-3 games.. I don’t know that Hall is guy that leads the Beavers to national prominence, I’m not sure anyone is that guy… But I know he wants the job, and I would be very confident he has the charisma to get this program out of the late Riley era doldrums and back to relevance.. Does he have all the chops to win a Pac-12 championship? Probably not today.. But if nothing else he might be the perfect coach to lay the foundation for the coach that does get this program there eventually..

    • With his energy, he could build his own foundation for years to come. It’s not like we don’t have good to great talent redshirting this year on top of some really good play out of some youngsters this year.

GA hired one right [expletive] guy!

And I thought about Rushing. All his group seems to be plug and play now. Omar and Landry played well last night. Even Moore made a stick or two… I think (33?).

  13. Kempt = 5-2 & #25 in polls
McMaryion = 5-2 knocking on polls door
Del Rio = started, got hurt

None of this young men gave up

    Big boy pants =

        • He only ran off two of them. And it’s not like LDR would beat out Blount. He’s just not good.

I always liked Kempt, though he’s not the talent I thought he could be. But he came from a program that taught him how to win, and he seemed solid in that capacity. He’s not a leader on his current team. But he follows well.

          • Who said anything about Blount starting for the Gators? If the decision came down to LDR and Blount, then yeah… he would. But that’s how seriously bad LDR is. If it comes down to him leading the way, Florida fan is gonna be crapping out their mouths about how woeful they are.

            And they wouldn’t be wrong.

You give me Fresno’s schedule, and our wandering, lost, confused and dysfunctional team has the exact same record they have.

It’s all relative. But some of you don’t believe that.

It’s like listening to whiners whine about not respecting the office of POTUS… now that a Kenyan who won’t release his obviously fake college transcripts isn’t POTUS.

Stupid isn’t as stupid does. Stupid is just stupid.

  14. I don’t think it matters much who the coach is. A great one could be worth a few wins but beginning to think GA was right/there will never be a consistent winning football program in Corvallis.

    • GA is an idiot.. I shouldn’t say means things about him because I do think he has some kind of mental disorder.. but GA’s an idiot nonetheless.. A consistent winner absolutely could happen in Corvallis with the correct leadership

      • Idiot is the wrong word. He’s a headcase.

And I don’t mean to insult anyone with a mental problem.

I think GA truly did care for a while, and then he broke down…lack of sleep, looking himself in the mirror and admitting flaws (or hamster wheeling to the point of insanity), poor results…etc. These things all take a toll.

I’m conflicted on him. He did inspire people to pay up for facilities; he did leave us with some talent, and he did leave us Cory Hall. If you’re writing a novel, he’s a prototypical tragic hero/character.

  15. Players making and signing a petition fighting for their coach makes this very interesting.

Said it the other day and maintain: I think the best move here is hire on Hall for the figure head / CEO / face of the program head coach. Use the search firm and added resources to get top notch coordinators. Hall doesn’t get GA money, but gets aggressive benchmark bonuses. Keep the same resources available for a kick ass support staff.

If Hall doesn’t get the position, I think everything gets blown up and the rebuild starts from scratch again….. we’ve been rebuilding since 2012 with almost Zero continuity in the coaching staf. I’m over it. Hall as head mans ability to connect with players and recruit could be our game changer. This move would be so non-osu like it could actually work.

    • I’ll agree with this if he does well over the next 4 games. By “well” I mean a proper game plan, proper personnel, and players in position to succeed. It would help if he teaches situation so we don’t have to deal with fumbles like that as well.

I like Hall. I just don’t want us to make an error and buy into the emotional hire. Need bigger sample.

      • IMO great coordinators are more important then great head coach. That’s why harping on spending time and resources on right coordinators. With that in place, Hall can learn the rest on the fly.

I also feel Andersens fatal flaw was bad instincts. I think he almost always listened to his gut, but his gut is almost always wrong.

Great guy, great motivator, hard worker, wants to do the right thing, but shitty instincts.

        • 100%. I can’t bash GA in any meaningful way. It’s fun to bust his balls for quitting, but really he was mentally toasted and insane from it (hard work, etc). He just wasn’t good with player analysis, especially at QB. I have no idea why. I hope one day he figures it out and speaks to it because it’s fascinating how bad he was at that. He was good at recruiting most positions and recruited a higher caliber athlete than Riley, so I don’t understand the QB thing at all.

          • Scrub walk on center probably took a lot of shit from quarterbacks over the years. Wouldn’t be surprised if he was an unreasonable hardass towards them when he got his chance.

          • Except for God, there are no QBs who passed through here in the last three years who would make McGiven’s O valid. And even God abandoned the place.

    • Also said it many times: but if we get even decent to good QB play next year this team turns the corner. Elu need to get back to 100% health and in shape. I imagine Evans gains eligibility (saw he tweeted Hall support and says he’s still a heavy.) Our secondary and line backers are set up to become dominate for the next 4 years. Receivers are in place, Rb stable stocked. Promising young o linemen…

    • He wouldn’t/shouldn’t be a figure head.

CEO, lead recruiter, face of the program….Sure but he’d still be making many important decisions so definitely not a figure head.

      • There’s no figure head. He’s young, energetic and a great motivator. He’s either in for HC or he’s not. You can tell he knows football. He will have to sort out the coordinators, that’s what an HC does. Look, if the Beavs get blown out on the road, this all becomes a moot point anyway and probably makes Barnes job easier as he will just move on.

      • It’s not a figure head, per se. But it is.

Identity comes in this form, but the management is meticulous when you peel back the layers. A “figure head” can clearly espouse the soul of a program. Any details which are in question can be assumed to follow that basic foundation. It becomes a positive feedback loop where the dumb little things become easy answers.

I’m not saying Hall has that instinct. But it seems like everyone assumes he does, so they adopt it when they’re dealing with him.

        • I just don’t like the term “figure head”. I think it implies a level of disengagement in the details. like when GA didn’t know why certain players were not playing. I think that term would be an insult to many leaders. Being a CEO who knows he has some shortcomings and hires the right people to compensate for that is another thing. Hall is not a baby, he’s 40 years old and has been in football all of his adult life.

          • it’s just another tool in the leadership box. You can’t be just a figure head or a delegator or a hustler or a closer. You have to be all those things. But without accountability, you are none of those things. Imagine someone who claims all this, but it’s always someone else’s fault when poor vision goes sideways.

That would be the worst leader ever.

  16. How good is Aiden Willard whom is redshirtint this year? Also, don’t we have like 5 OL redshirting this year as well? Barnes is right that we are 2-3 recruiting classes away from being competitive. I would equate Hall to coach Brennan when Riley left, but in season difference. He’s working his a$$ Off to keep this team together and put together the best recruiting class he can at this point. He’s not just fighting for the job, or to stay on, he’s fighting for his players and university he coaches. He’s the type of coach I would respect and want to play for let alone run through a brick wall for him if it meant winning a game. He’s given the players a reason to believe and the players have bought into it. Hall and Barnes certainly have a plan and it’s obvious with the players and recruits. They’re making a statement to the next head coach that Hall better remain on staff let alone HC. Players aren’t doing this for any of the other coaches. So it could be that Hall says, ‘we fight together as one and play to our strengths, we all keep our jobs, we all remain a family and finish what we set out to do for the season. Don’t let Andersen leaving us be for not. He brought you here, you belong here, you better well show it and act like it!’

  17. Dabo Swinney worked out pretty well for Clemson… He was a position coach before becoming the Head Coach…

Anymore, the HC is the CEO of the program… I say take the chance on Hall, who else do you think is going to come here?

  18. Angry, you mentioned hammering home fundamentals. Tackling looked better then it has all season last night. Someone mentioned it in the other thread, and I agree.

  19. The players have put up a petition at ipetitons.com to keep Coach Hall. I ran across it on Twitter, Angie had retweeted it. The goal was 1000 signatures by Monday & it’s already at 745

  20. I’m excited about Hall man.. I got one foot firmly on the band wagon.. But the good news is there are still plenty of games to sort this out.. If the team continues to improve and look competent in terms of strategy and play calling, like it has the last couple games, I don’t see how Hall doesn’t get the job.

A lot of the other names being thrown out there that people are high on don’t have a lot or any power five head coaching experience either.. This team could still fall flat on its face the next few weeks (I doubt it) and it would be moot..

I just really can’t believe the spark this guy has provided and the literal overnight improvements.. We went from three stooges to a team that would have EASILY beat Colorado and Stanford w/ even average QB play.. and really probably should have won both games anyway..

I’m excited!! and I’m going to let myself be excited because its about time Beaver fans had something to be excited about! #HALLin

    • I have to say that I was firmly planted in the “Meh… let’s see if he’s any good besides the rah rah rah stuff… maybe we give him an interview and reward his good work with a coordinator position or a pay raise or some such glad-handing.

I’m firmly not planted there any more. I can’t say I’m #Hallin. I want to see a good road game first.

I would say the same of GA’s tenure, btw.

But it’s hard to watch the kids play ball with such joy and think going out to hire some stick in the mud with his newfangled O or D is gonna do anything that makes this game fun. I was really really bored with college football until a couple weeks ago.

      • I will be more committed for Coach Hall to be given more responsibility if I see better consistency & improvement; but I think any one at this point would be hard pressed to deny the team isn’t demonstrating spirit.

That this is a student driven petition says something; are they having fun? How the student athletes feel should be considered in the equation.

  21. No doubt we need to see the next four games to further assess Hall. I think many of us are excited to see such good game execution with almost not time to prepare. So far, he is the Anti-Riley. Plus the energy. And he looks bad ass on the sidelines and that alone will help recruiting. He may be lightning in a bottle that nobody else sees. Four more games then we decide.

  22. ESPN has the game replay available on WatchESPN. Nall fumbled because Houston whiffed on the blocked and Harrison Phillips fell forward as Matagi was pulling. Matagi was knocked off balance by Philips and fell forward pinwheel style. As Nall took his first step, Matagi’s right foot kicked up, heel hit the ball from below Nall and he never saw who hit the ball. Crazy luck o da Beavs.

  23. Jack is right.. If the players want Hall to stick they simply need to continue the trajectory they have been on since GA left.. If the team goes 2-2 to finish the year with inspired/excited play in all four games……..

I’ve said this before on here but I don’t put that much into experience. Competence is FAR more important.. If you have experience, but you’re bad at your job.. What good is that? Give me the inexperienced guy, that’s really talented, every time.. Every great coach ever, was at one point, inexperienced..

So we’ll see how the rest of the schedule plays out with Hall.. But at minimum he deserves a ton of credit for making this season interesting and watchable despite the 1-7 record..

Other interesting note.. I saw a post on twitter where Landry Payne made his first start and had 10 plus tackles, a forced fumble, and a pass defensed.. Where has Landry Payne been all season?! I’m not sure I even remember him get on the field.. or maybe I was just too disgusted early on to notice.. My point though is maybe GA’s inability to recognize and develop the right players went beyond just the QB position.

  24. Imo the players should concentrate on their studies, playing sound football and not get involved in the emotional stuff about who’s going to be their next HC. Perhaps this is a good test for Hall in that he should tell them to knock it off and do as I mentioned above. If he doesn’t do this he’s encouraging an avoidable climate for the next coach.

  25. To me this is no different then any other leadership role hire. We need to hire a coach that has the following abilities in this order of priority:
    1) Character / integrity – not putting own interest first
    2) Ability to connect with people and get buy in. Can’t lead without this.
    3) Ability to recruit the right people (players and staff) who will work with you and not against you.
    4) Love for the job or task at hand.
    5) Ability to continue to learn and adjust as needed.
    6) Football knowledge

For me it comes down to this… does Hall have these things. At first glance it appears so but the remainder of this season should show us a lot. I’d rather have a young guy with these qualities then someone who has built their “Brand” as the new flavor of the month. OSU is kind of in the “what is there to lose” stage now anyway.

    • Agree. If Hall can connect with the kids, talent will come. I bet there are coacheswho wouldn’t mind joining him because of his energy, charisma. He has credibility and an NFL background pedigree. This is a big opportunity for OSU to change the course from the past images of a stale bored sideline. Hall seems to have the “it” factor that is so elusive.
He may not need to have an all-star coaching tree connection. He needs to get a competent staff that teaches fundamentals, recruits and believes that winning in Corvallis is possible.

I saw and article where Hall was asked if he liked being in Corvallis, he responded “I came from Fresno. What do you think?” Hall could be the luckiest hire since Prothro for OSU. He may change the narrative about Corvallis, OSU football.

I like the Cal version of young coach with seasoned coordinators, then young guys to recruitthroughout the rest of the staff. Maybe bring back Bray, Breckterfield, Heyward, etc. But let Hall be the lead dog.

    • You have to admit he’s been left waving in the wind by his AD. Coaches do goofy things all the time. A lot of them are meatheads. The AD is the stuffed suit who controls the narrative for his or her school. If they don’t call the coach in to talk about his latest goofiness so they can mitigate it and show they’re on the same page publicly, then the goofiness cascades out of control.

Speaking of… has Barnes responded to the petition? I imagine he could crow a little about all the good things he said while promoting Hall. Then he could temper it by saying, “Let’s see how things go. If the enthusiasm within this program doesn’t look like it will run its course in the near future, I’ll have a decision to make at the end of the season. But I think this speaks to the potential this program has for whomever our coach will be in the future.”

      • Maybe Barnes can tie this into some big-time fundraising while there is excitement sand interest. At least build on the notion of a west side redo and begin challenging those big fish to get things moving forward in financial arenas.

    • Yes. Barnes should be working the heavyweight donors all month, and particularly now after the uptick in interest/performance despite the 2 close losses.

Hall may be able to change attitiudes and galvanize the fanbase as much as he has the team, which would be nothing short of a miracle.

I hope the ASU game is much closer to a sell-out and the crowd is fully engaged again. Aside from the fumble, that 4th quarter was rocking pretty good even with only 25k or so in attendance.

  26. Hall’s lack of HC experience seems to be a sticking point for many. Doesn’t his experience in business, at least to some degree, mitigate that? Film producer and real estate developer don’t require large staffs but do require detailed organization.

    • No, his experience in business does nothing to make up for a lack of experience managing the in game situations. Angry said it above and he’s right, we need to see more. Why are so many ready to hand the keys over to an inexperienced interim who is 0-2 right now? Let him try to earn it over the next 4 weeks, but keep the search going. Hall will have to win the job on the field first and then he’ll have to blow Barnes away with his plan to fix this thing.

  27. No disagreement here, mitigate shouldn’t be taken as “erase “.
But I think, off field portions of the HC position share some of the challenges Hall had to overcome in his business career.
Certainly it’s too soon to make a decision, next four weeks bear close scrutiny.

EDIT: intended as response to the Rev above

    • To be honest, I don’t know much about Hall’s business experience but there is that former TD Ameritrade CEO who is the head coach at Coastal Carolina.

  28. Some current O coordinators to consider in addition to Joe Moorehead for next head ball coach:
Eliah Drinkwitz NC State – 34 but he’s worked under Gus Malzahn and was Boise’s OC previously including 2014 Fiesta Bowl year. NC State having their best season in a long time.

Tim Drevnon Michigan – 48 and also coaches O line. Has been with Harbaugh at every stop.

Sterlin Gilbert South Florida – 39 brought up under Dino Babers. Was paid big money to lead the Texas offense in 2016. His USF offense is averaging 43.3 points per game. Also has Texas high school coaching ties.

Sonny Crumbie TCU – 36 air raid guy and played professionally. TCU runs for 191 yards per game combined with his air raid principles.

    • Kempt with another great game. “You’ll never play at Oregon State…because you’re good…and my small penis/ walk-on-center ego can’t take it.”

      • Now we know why GA didn’t/doesn’t have twitter. I can’t imagine the abuse to which he would be subjected – from all angles.

        Oregon State was sooooooooo duped.

      • Kempt with a decent first half, and ISU D witha great game.

Kempt was injured and couldn’t finish the game. But your tunnel vision of stupidity didn’t notice this… or even care… because Kempt isn’t a human… he’s just a fucking tool for you to bash against the rocks of your months-long narrative which makes everyone a shit.

But you’ll deny that last part as well.

  29. I’m starting to get the feeling that if Hall isn’t the new HC we are going to see a big, big step back with the program…

Recruits are now using the #Hallin tag, players are stating that if he goes they go…

If Hall doesn’t get it we are screwed…

    • There is a 3rd option where stays on as a position coach or co-DC. Which players are threatening to leave if Hall isn’t the head coach?

    • They are the worst program in the Pac 12 and Hall is 0-2 as interim, but if Hall goes, the program will take a “big, big, step back”. Are you by chance Cory Hall’s mom?

    • It seems like players always do that when there is an interim coach. It’s certainly something to take into account. Didn’t the U$C guys push hard for Helton before they ultimately went with Sark? I can’t remember.

  30. I’m absolutely ok going forward with Hall. But I want the contract to be short and performance based and the pay to be above average for a P12 coach. Let him know that if he succeeds he will be valued and compensated as such. Take a flyer on this guy but don’t go crazy on a bad buyout. If a buyout becomes needed, we’d better not hear how poor the athletic department is. They have saved millions and millions in escaping the last two buyouts.

    • I think this idea is doable. something like a 1.5m base with +$150K per win or some such. 2 year contract, with a 3 year contract considered to include the averages of the wins +payout of the previous years to ensure he doesn’t get some massive pay cut on a longer contract.

    • Yet Beau’s offense scored twice as many points on the road this week than Hall and McGiven’s offense did at home.

Hall has his chance against Baldwin next week. Let the best man win.

      • ^^^^This

Need to be patient and let the season play out. Would not be surprised at all if Hall ends up 1-5 in his half of the season. We want to hand him the keys for that? He could still end up 0-6 in his half of the season. He has a big game next week and if the players want him they can start by winning that game. Am a neutral observer but I want to see who is going to win the matchup and games.

If the Beavs lose next week then we will have had a lot of talk with much results and Hall will have gone down directly against Baldwin. No matter who you support someone needs to win and make a case. Afraid Hall will do 1-5 at best and many times these interims peak early and fade. Have to see a lot more from Hall and at least 2 games in the Win column over his 6 games to be taken very seriously. I suggest his players focus on those 4 games left instead of tweeting about petitions for a coach yet to win a game.

  31. Hall as HC $1.25m + incentives
    Helfrich as OC
    Dave Aranda as DC
Trent Bray to replace Hall on the Defensive side and as a recruiter
Ed Orgeron to coach d-line and be recruiting coordinator

Let UofO pick up most of Helf’s salary and LSU most of Orgeron and Aranda’s after they get fired.

I’m not sure how any of the numbers work out but these guys are all proven and good in these roles to surrouind Hall and he can be a leader of men. I’m kind of joking but maybe 30% hopeful something like this becomes the idea of how it is approached by Barnes and Co, which means they won’t consider anything of the sort.

  32. Utah is getting smoked today by Oregon. Utes down 17-3. Oh and formers Duck Carrington gives up a fumble recovery TD to his former team.

  33. Crappy ol’ Kyle Kempt our former 4th string QB that grand master GA assessed as never playing at OSU guns down #4 TCU today, also gunned down #3 Oklahoma a couple weeks ago.

    • jax said anyone who gets ran off by a mentally ill coach is a pussy, so since he is so wise, kempt sux? I mean jax literally said a starting Florida QB couldn’t beat out our mighty walk on Connor Blount……. jax post a shitty song!!!

        • Old Bone Spur is going to dumbshit his way to thousands of dead soldiers and sailors for the sake of his own ego. And that’s appearing to be the best case scenario right now.

But at least he’s a smart guy because he went to an Ivy League school. I just wish he’d actually do something for once. It won’t be long until he’s indicted for money laundering.

          • Shut your fucking mouth Jack. As if you gave a shit about dead soldiers and sailors you piece of shit lib. As a veteran I can tell you an overwhelming majority of us support the way Trump is handling business and who he appoints to handle the military (Specifically Mattis). The military ethos was severely damaged by the last President and his cadre and did indeed cause unnecessary military deaths. Watched it fall apart around me. Keep it to football you old arrogant jackass.

          • Anyone who supports trump needs to shut their fucking mouth. The piece of shit doesn’t care about anyone but himself. Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Look it up.

          • Your talking points are as dumb as finding out Nairobi was in Kenya in 1960. While I’m no fan of the Kenyan born in not Kenya (or idiot boy, for that matter), I don’t pretend they know more about everything than the generals. What I do know is that I talked to your brain back in the 90s when the GOP stopped my paycheck twice. And your brain wrongly blamed the Bubba at that time.

So you can shove your self-righteous, “I’m a better vet than you are,” shit back in the dank little mind who ran the focus group to create the language that made you the fool to believe it.

Old Bone Spur, the half man, is a dumbshit narcissist who has likely been laundering money for Russian organized crime for more than three decades. If you hear anyone talking about Russians or Putin and the election, know they’re a million miles off.

            Trump/Deutsche Bank/Russin organized crime/Ukraine

POTUS is about as patriotic for the USA as Immelda Marcos was. He’s just dumberer.

Btw, nothing he has done has improved troop readiness. All the changes we’ve seen, save sending recon and training squads to Niger, were passed by Congressional order and signed by POTUS… last year.

Mattis has to continuously come out and apologize for POTUS’ narcissism, Kelly apparently feels he has to blatantly lie about members of Congress. That will go over well.

Old Bone Spur is just about done, and you would be incredibly stupid to remain on his bandwagon. I realize you may be reading these words and maybe even do the research and decide for yourself that none of it really matters to you.

But it matters in this world. Old Bone Spur, the pussy grabber, is a hack in over his head. And You buy it.

You were a sucker. Now you’re a spiteful puppet.

          • And you’re sucker enough to buy the other side you old washed up piece of shit. Everything he has done, which is mostly putting the right people in place and improving morale by his mere respect for the military, has improved troop readiness. Nobodies playing the I’m a better vet then you are. I said an overwhelming majority of vets support Trump and we were hindered by the previous fuck in office because it is true. So fuck you. Hey Bendbeaver, you yuppie fuck shouldn’t you be supporting the ducks with you and Jacks Bachelor of Arts degrees in bullshit?

          • Little commie bitch Jack…20% of the countries uranium is now controlled by Russia. Who’s fault is that? Who let that happen?

And yes, H Clinton did stand down support for the forces at Benghazi. Let them die whether you want to believe it or not.

Libs are fools because they think they can make war sanitary and in turn get our young men and women killed all the time. Watched it happen.

Fuck you and you’re bullshit Jack I’m sick of reading it all the time here.

          • Let me take a wild shot in the dark here Jack. You were an officer with a fucking political science degree. GOP consistently gives the military better pay raises and the conservatives overwhelmingly serve in higher numbers in the military. So again, a well deserved fuck you. I don’t understand how you can be so naive, arrogant and ignorant at your age.

          • Okay… the BA shot was clever.

But you fail at math. So I know you don’t know what that means.

Old Bone Spur has done nothing… nada… zilch… zero…. emptiness upon emptiness… to better readiness. All of it was scheduled by the GOP Congress to run once the Kenyan not born in Kenya was out of office.

That’s how much the GOP will stoop to play politics. They will create sequestration just to make the black guy look bad… as if he needed help. And you are that dumb. You think I haven’t heard all this tripe before? I can probably link 50 articles of sources you can’t write off as “liberal” boogeymen. But you would do so anyway. You’re that predictable.

20% of the countries uranium is now controlled by Russia.

            https://www.snopes.com/hillary-clinton-uranium-russia-deal/

You don’t have to be such a dumb fucking tool. You can be free. This is America, you moron.

When you’re done dwelling over the struggle in Eurasia… sorry… UrAsia, get back to me. I have a job on a grassy knoll I know you can do.

          • Hey StateU, back up your bullshit post and show me where a ‘majority of vets’ support trump? Oh wait, you can’t because you pulled that out of your ass. See, when I earned my BA, I learned about research methodology.

          • @bendbeaver

Sadly, he is not wrong. Military personnel aren’t exactly known to be free thinkers. We probably know many who are, but we do so because we think freely ourselves. Those who direct those who rely on tropes to think are in control right now. It will fail soon.

          • Let me take a wild shot in the dark here Jack. You were an officer with a fucking political science degree.

You don’t get to know that, because you don’t know shit. Suffice it to say the first of my 23 years was as an enlisted… um… painter.

          • At the QB position?

You’re high if you think it didn’t. They tried to play LDR.

I’m guessing you’ve never watched him play, read his stats or read the UFla blogs.

It’s okay. You’re just now starting to realize that your head is so far up your own ass that you can’t see beyond the back of your head as it protrudes from your mouth. That’s what circular reasoning looks like.

    • Yeah GA must have been a real idiot when he inherited a roster with 6 QB’s + Seth Collins to tell the less mobile QB’s that they weren’t a good fit for the offense he was planning to run. In hindsight GA may have been better served having Baldwin adapt the offense to the personnel but he was intent on having a running QB. It makes sense then to not have scholarships tied up in immobile QB’s. One of which being Kyle Kempt who as a senior is finally seeing the field. He wasn’t ready to play at the juco he attended either by the way.

    • Kempt is serviceable. Their D has been outstanding this year. Joel Lanning has played himself onto the draft board in his first year after a position change. And his team is following him. It’s a great story so far, if you all want to PYHOOYAs.

You would also note he didn’t play in the second half, since he got hurt… not that any of you actually care about him.

  34. Sounds like Barnes is going to keep in contact w GA for advice on the next head coach, so maybe he could also keep in touch and have GA consult him on QBs too.

    • I caught that also, Barnes needs advice on what? How to be bat shit crazy? Granted, I get that they are friends, but even if he was consulting with GA, it’s stupid to admit it given GA walked away from the team and was a shitty coach anyway.

      • He was a shitty head coach at OSU, and that’s clear now that he’s done the right thing and quit. He can’t be committed to this team because of his own decisions.

So you’re correct to say that Barnes, no matter how much he values GA as an impartial observer, shouldn’t have mentioned this.

  35. Get a load of this headline from a Penn State blog:

“No. 6 Ohio State 39, No. 2 Penn State 38: Evil Wins Again”

    Talk about self-unaware irony.

  36. Cory Hall….

All I know is…..I want more of what he’s pushin!

I don’t know about HC, but OSU should do everything they can to retain him.

The players and recruits are #Hallin…..no small feat, when it looked like we’D see a mass exodus and total implosion

      • Just saw that UCLA has the worst run D in DI…and the Beavers don’t play them either. Would be nice to go to LA, run through, over, and around the Bruins…maybe help with some southern Cal recruiting.

  37. Hey NiceBeaver, do you still have that scholarship tracker? I’d like to see some numbers on our class distribution.

People keep talking about this team being really young, but that’s really not my sense. Just seems to me that our upperclassmen are not very good. Let’s not use “young” as an excuse if it’s not real…we’ve been “young” ever since GA came on board.

      • Thanks! So I show:

        Freshmen: 25
        Soph: 21
        Junior: 20
        Senior: 17

So, I guess we’re slightly young, but not a large factor. Soph and junior classes are normal size; freshman class is a little larger and senior class a little smaller (+/- 4 players).

JMO – that’s not enough to excuse bad performance on being young.

    • People keep saying we’ll be really deep at RB again next year, but I could see a scenario Hall and Tyner are both gone, as well as Johnson. Our remaining backs would be much smaller.
We don’t lose much else on offense besides DG and Laguna, I think.
Defense takes a bit more of a hit, but most of our seniors are not what you could call “impact” guys.

      • Assuming Petras signs, the (new?) offensive coordinator will likely make significant changes – much less QB running, more snaps from under center…maybe the occasional FB?

I could understand Nall leaving, but maybe he stays to taste some Beaver victory.

      • Pierce and Tyler are both solid .

If Nall bounces then for the league it hurts, but he better have one hell of a combine. He barely cracks the top 50 in rushing this year, has actually fumbled quite a bit, and it looks like a pretty tough class for upperclassmen rb’s.

Wouldn’t hurt to ink a bruiser this year to complement our other dudes.

  38. Looks like Riles is gonna pull it out. Somehow I think the Husker meltdown might be worse. They’re worried Riley might gain momentum and stick around, and Scott Frost will get away

    *popcorn munch*

  39. Purdue leads most of the game, gives up a TD with under a minute left, loses by one point. Just like Thursday, my heart is broken again :(

  40. Purdue lost to Rutgers last week, so it’s not like Smilin’ Mike achieved any great accomplishment. They barely beat another B-10 also ran. He already proved he can’t compete with the big boys of the conference. He’s already reached 4 losses, he’s gone soon enough.

  41. Sumlin is back on the hot seat at A&M after losing to Mississippi State.

If he became available after season I think he is a worthy interview. Lots of HC experience in one of toughest divisions in college football. No doubt he gets a few interviews but Oregon State would have a shot and the Pac-12 might be a better spot for him to get going again.

Prefer Scott Frost but if we are going to interview Baldwin and a few others I think Sumlin is worth an interview if interested. Sure he would cost 2.9 million a year but could be a guy who can end up being worth it.

    • You can’t apply a one off performance to the whole .Also I hate everyone when they don’t see things my way. I really am just a toddler with poopy pants, that’s why I’m so angry all the time.

  42. McM lost some of his cache tonight. Fresno got pounded by UNLV at home although it was a couple of awful special team plays that cost them the game.

      • Yes. A tough loss to the high school guy must make the Tedford feel bad.

But MM at least had a 60%, 180 yard output with no TOs.

That would make him a god… again.

        • Be prepared to be haunted by the ghosts of transferred Beaver QB’s this holiday season, you caustic tongued devil. I suppose you have nasty things to say about that Sims kid who left for South Alabama also.

          • Billy Sims? Sims?

The pejoratives are the natural conclusion to your narrative. Why is that so difficult for you to understand? You said MM took all summer to weigh the decision of coming back. You said he started fall camp having decided that he would run away if he didn’t get the starting nod. That can only mean he wasn’t committed to the team, and nobody in their right mind can say that someone who is not committed would have been the right choice for the starting nod.

He did what was best for him. That is your narrative. He did not consider his teammates when making any decisions, according to your narrative. Also according to your narrative, he screwed his teammates by making a life decision based on his entitlement, since he took his talent elsewhere. That talent isn’t better than decent, btw. But because he plays in a shit division he gets to look good. Tedford doesn’t allow him to make several throws because he doesn’t have the arm to make those throws. DG is the same for us. His arm is only slightly better than MM’s is, but he’s quicker and not as accurate. So make of that what you will. I’m sure everyone will think real observations of someone who plays for another team by his own choice are just unfair or personal or something.

You decided to create the narrative, but you don’t have the stones to own it.

            You’re weak.

          • I don’t think I created any narrative if you are talking to me and I don’t even follow football in the summer, so I think you are referring to some of Angry’s comments.. I said plain and simply, he left because he felt he could start somewhere else. End of story. Mullaney left because he could win someplace else. So have a hundred other transfers across the nation. Playing time, a better team and better coach. Was McM selfish? Who gives a fuck? He’s getting to play. Back up QB’s on shitty teams are a dime a dozen. Why should you expect him to be one?

And why does it bother you more than the 10 or 15 other transfers over the past five years? And how do you specifically know that he let the team down and any more than Maggeo transferring to Mississippi?

Also, if you read my posts I have actually been sarcastic about McM in the MWC where others have extolled his virtues. If you don’t think I understand the level of competition is much lower you’re not as smart as I used to give you credit for.

So, can we end this now?

Last word is yours of course.

          • LOL, geez..my comments about “transfers past” were meant as a joke. Jack needs less words and more of a sense of humor? If I create a “Jack” screen name and continue the debate does that make it more or less “circucular”?

          • MM transferring doesn’t really bother me. I have no clue why he did, and I don’t care. He’s gone.

What bothers me is that people make up shit about his motivations that puts him in a bad light, and they pretend that’s okay. I’m fine if he left for playing time. But you better not tell me he was committed to this team if that’s the reason he did it. And you probably shouldn’t make up conspiracies about losing the locker because the coach chose someone who was not committed to this team. I understand these are just kids. But most teams don’t linger over someone who chooses not to be a part of them. They just don’t.

So I’ve run angry’s bullshit narrative to its conclusions and giggled when the herd got upset about them. You defended that narrative. So I don’t know why you think you’re detached from it.

The easy way to make it all stop is to not talk about it anymore. I have never started any of these conversations about MM or any other bullshit conspiracy theory that makes football decisions personal for whatever crazy reason. It’s the Mormons’ fault. It’s GA’s fault. It’s the flying spaghetti beaver’s fault.

One person decided to leave OSU. Nobody did it for him. So long, and thanks for all the fish. If you want to find blame, you have one person to choose from. If you’re not consumed by conspiratorial thought, you might think well of him. But no. He’s God’s gift to Beaver football, and our coach lost the team because he made a football decision.

            Who thinks that way?

        • You rang? Yep you did & I really don’t care what you do. I take that back I’d like to see you get back on your meds. It’s better for everyone.

          • You take what back?

You doubled down on it when asked. You even thought you were clever for doing so.

If I took meds, would I get to join the ranks of the unthinking? It sounds like such a cool club.

          • You’re so smart that you can’t figure out that I was taking back not caring what you do. As for the meds, maybe you should be on them. I did double down and I stand by it. You know you probably won’t have your star player and that crap assed game plan is what you come up with. Then when your QB is stinking it up, you won’t put in the other QB(Costello I think) who has come in & played this year, giving the team the spark it needed to get the win in those games.

          • Btw I was talking about a coach not a player & there is a big difference. I’ve not been impressed with Stanford’s offense for a while now. Not alot variance from game to game, regardless of what the other teams weakness on D is. It’s cost them 2 games so far (almost 3) and I think it’s possible that it’ll cost them another game before the end of the year

          • Notre Dame will likely clip them. But your fallacy of the one-off is just dumb. If it isn’t transferable to players, it’s more dumb.

People have bad days. They’re human. You have a bad thesis. You’re human. You doubled down on it when asked, and now you’ve tripled down. That’s not shame on me.

        • Ok this one off as example as previously discussed. Do you want a coach who can’t game plan around adversity? Or one who won’t pull player who is stinking it up out on the field? In coaching a one off can expose a coaches weakness.Period
The player thing, well that’s between you, Angry and whoever else. I’m flattered that you liked my “thesis” so much you wanted to use it on something I didn’t intend to use it for. Players do have bad games for whatever reason (pet fish died as an example) and you’re right they are human. They could practice great all week then the fish dies morning of the game. Sadness makes player fail to perform up to ability.Distraction coming from personal life affects performance. Coaches on the other hand have all week to make the game plan and implement it. Even with personal life distraction it should be possible to make a good game plan. That didn’t happen this week and then he failed to pull out a player who didn’t belong out there. This One-Off has the coach screwing up twice and that’s enough for me to take him off this hypothetical list of new coaches for the Beavers.

          • People have bad days.

You want to jump all over someone who had a bad day. You tried to make it a season-long thing but failed. I like to think our D had a great day and threw them for a loop. But they still ground out a win.

      • By pounded I mean that UNLV offense really took it to FSU’s defense physically and was able to run the ball well. FSU’s defense had been dominate in the MWC up until last night. So it was a pounding of sorts. As mentioned, two horrendous special team plays decided the game for the most part.

McM didn’t have that bad of a game actually, but he made a couple of poor throws when they were behind in the 4th quarter.

        • A one point a couple years back there was one Jack debating with another Jack and at times they were both making good points. It gets confusing, but an interesting read.

          • There was the one about seven years back. It was Jeff Perry. He’s that kind of pus-head, a dick who can’t think for himself but loves to bully. I’ve met him in person since that time, and he really is that dumb.

It’s why I started using an avatar. I don’t think you’re talking about that time because the pedo shit he wrote was just disgusting.

There was a period last year when an account used by several friends was hacked by the brother-in-law of one of us, and he went haywire with it, spamming all contacts and bookmarks with freaked out fake concern about things they write on their blogs. He got some comments on here with that email address as well. But I don’t think he made any sense. I think it was just concern trolling.

He got to go see a judge for that. It rose to the level of stalking on a couple blogs.

          • It may have been a year ago? I don’t think either Jack was actually you, were they? I don’t remember “dual Jacks”, being that offensive, but I don’t have a great memory. I don’t remember Jeff Perry,at all, was that his actual name in here? There have been some interesting characters. We can all debate and throw a little shit at each other, but I never take any offense. We all suffer or delight in OSU sports together. I don’t get when someone goes off the rails.

          • He goes by JP the Beaver, or something like it.

I don’t take any offense from anon unless they say something really bad that deserves a personal retort. I won’t let up on responding to the continued fallacy that people enjoy around here. I’m predictable that way. So when I fail to respond, it’s only because I don’t see it. If anon wants to continue their bullying, I’m going to continue to respond to their 4th grade taunts. I give no quarter to dumb. I imagine most of them do it because they know I’ll respond to dumb, and they think they score points because they are constantly contrarian to common sense.

My favorites are the numbnuts who put aside common decency to promote dirtbags like POTUS. They think it’s because I’m liberal (which we all are if we espouse freedom for individuals and markets and such), not because Dumbshit Donald constantly says and does stupid shit and has done so for over 40 years. Old Bone Spur is a coward who got a lot of money from daddy and knows enough to hire an accountant to manage his money and lawyers to sue the shit out of everyman so he can break them with court costs and not pay them for their labor or services. Anyone who ignores this because they think he’s conservative (he’s not), is as morally bankrupt as he is. He deserves less respect than he gave the last POTUS, because he just couldn’t handle that a black man was in the office. I was no fan of Obama, but Old Bone Spur was just way out of line. Anyone who thinks he’s an acceptable representation of a man has no moral compass.

          • You know, I don’t even read those type of posts. I’m really here for Beaver related sports debate and information. Seems like there are a million other forums to push political agendas if that’s a persons thing.

          • Yeah… I respond to it because he’s such an unstable dipshit who scares our allies and gets chuckled at by China and Russia.

I don’t have to bring it up. Just look at the handle below.

  43. In all my years of reading this blog I have not seen a single insult other than “no YOU’RE dumb” posted by jack. Can you at least mix it up a little? thanks.

  44. Hall may get the job by default.
There are going to be a lot of openings and Red Nose Big Pants quitting does us no good if we wait till the coaching musical chairs game starts. We will be way down the pecking order.
    Openings almost for sure:
    Florida
    Arkansas
    Nebraska
    Tennessee
    Mississippi
    Mizzu
    Probable:
    A&M
    UCLA
Kansas, ok we got them beat.
    Could happen:
Jimbo Fisher decides he has been at FSU long enough?
Just off the top of the head. Must be others.

    • Looks pretty accurate. I really don’t see the advantage of having half a season to conduct a search unless you want to zero in and get a head start on a guy not coaching this year. I don’t see a Chip Kelly type coming so meanwhile recruiting suffers and we wait for musical chairs to see where we fit in the pecking order.

        • I know Coach Hall hasn’t been named the Head guy yet. But the fact he is keeping the team and recruits tight to OSU has to say something to you all. I expect some recruits to leave before all ia said and done. But if Hall isn’t named head coach how many more will leave? I’m at the point that maybe we name Coach Hall head coach for 1.5 million with big incentives. See what he can do. Again, I’m curious to see what happens against Cal on the road. By the way just heard Florida coach is out. No, I don’t want him either. See GA for examples.

          • Why don’t we blow up the program and go for the “Bat Shit Crazy” hall of fame? Let GA come back as DC, bring in Les Miles as HC and Art Briles as OC. Call it good and wait for the landslide of national attention! Feel free to add any crazy/morally bankrupt coaches I’m missing.

          • The average recruiting ranking of OSU’s class is around 88th in the country. Salvaging this class means little when almost impossible for a P5 program to drop outside the Top 95. There are only 65 Power 5 programs so currently we are well behind the Memphis, SMUs, Tulsa’s and maybe even behind Hawaii.

Whoever the new coach is, is more likely to return the program to its norm of Top 50 to 55 on his own merits within a couple years.

If Hall wants to have a chance win atleast two games and go get a verbal, not silent, committment from someone like Isaah Crocker this week or next. He can always decommit if he wants to.
Guarantee you a Les Miles would have a Top 50 or 55 class in the first one he actively recruited. Same with Scott Frost, Sumlin and others.

There needs to be an offensive plan far beyond what McGiven is providing. I could see Hall as a DC inder a Sumlin, Baldwin or others and the total coaching talent at OSU might become something able to compete week in and week out to actually produce some consistent winning. But as is that will barely happen. Beaver Nation will keep grasping at straws as Hall likely goes 1-5 or worse over his 6 games because the fanbase has such low expecations of actually winning consistently.

Too many people saying this position is a graveyard when not long ago it launched multiple NFL coaching stints. Winning consistently at OSU has rewards too when a coach does it.

          • You think we’re bad enough that we have to just accept Beau Baldwin as what we can get. Arbitrary rankings do nothing to support your argument, if you want to call it one. And you fall far short of calling for McGiven to leave, which should happen.

  45. Coaches wish list:

    Vince Lombardi
    George Hallas
    Woody Hayes
    George Allen
    Knute Rockne
    Bud Wilkerson

Their all being dead only makes them only slightly less accessible than Chip Kelly etc.

i, on the other hand, am rested and ready after a twenty year rest. Plus I would work for almost nothing.

    • Gets hired at OSU. Luke Del Rio gets a special exemption from the NCAA for his tenth year of eligibility and grad transfers back to Corvallis. Finally starts for Beavs.

      • i would think it should not have much of an impact on Riley’s future unless this is the start of him running the table, but the Penn St game should be another blow out, so I don’t think that’s possible. With his DA gone, he’s gone. Brohm was the golden boy of P-5 coaches starting the season, but losses to Rutgers and now NU have taken a little of the luster off. After all, Riley lost to a truly awful Purdue team 55-45 in his first season. I think the win is inconsequential to Riley being gone at the end of the season, but weirder things happen in college football all the time.

        • I think so, too, but Riley is notorious for cooling his seat just enough to make fans think he’s the answer. I’m wondering if Nebby fans fall for that like our fans did.

          • Here’s the “weirder things have happened” scenario and you’re point about Riley doing just enough to save his ass…..

If he beats Northwestern, Iowa and Minnesota, and that’s not impossible at all, he goes 7-5 with a bowl bid and brain dead NU fans probably forget the non-competitive blow outs to Whisky, OSU and probably Penn St. 7-5 with Eichorst, he gets another year. New AD, not sure. His margin for error is razor thin. Extra gum will be needed.

The “Tom Osborne” effect could be in play, 7-5 you stay, 6-6 or less and you’re gone.

          • Another question would be whether Riley even wants to save his ass. He might just want to be bought out so he can go retire on the ranch and collect a check for a few years.

          • True, he was looking pretty uninspiring on the sidelines until that last drive. I don’t know. Tanner Lee is playing better, he might want to ride him one more year if he can get it. I think he has to finish 3-1 to even have a chance of staying. There are no easy wins left on the schedule.

          • He was hunched over and looked like he was freezing his ass off and didn’t want to be there.
Lee is playing better and the easy win is at Minnesota. The QB situation here makes DG look like Joe Montana. They are so bad it borders on the unbelievable. Leidner left and they got worse at the position. How is that even possible?

          • I don’t know why Nebraska can’t make MR one of those fucking insulated Artic ski jackets in Husker red, so he doesn’t have to do the quadruple layers with those light jackets and hoodies. He always looks so damn cold and miserable. Why is his posture so bad anyway?

      • Listening to the post game, I got the vibe very little time was bought.
Also, Riley reportedly told the locker room that this was the start of “something special”
        #delusional

        • I have my doubts that Barnes is in it for the long haul at OSU, nothing concrete, just a feeling so far. For all of BDC’s faults, I felt like he was a Beaver.

          • I am doubtful Barnes will stick around. There’s been several labor disputes in the department that have been pretty hairy and one at least has evolved into a lawsuit. They were all lead by him. There’s two others that may or may not lead to lawsuits. I have a feeling he may be wanting to move on. The department needs to learn about labor law and get themselves legal advice before doing the stuff they’ve been doing.

      • And if he loses and drops to 0-3? What if he follows that up with two more losses and is sitting at 0-5?

When he first took over people were saying he needs to win 3 or 4 games. Then it was 3 and 2 or 3. After losing to Stanford now we are hearing win 2. If he loses to Cal I am sure it will be win 1 or 2 and within days just win 1 game. Then that will last up until the Civil War.

Expectations for actually winning football games keeps getting lower and lower.

    • They have about a 10% chance to beat AZ on the road. If they can win at Cal, beat ASU, and have a good game against the Ducks that should be enough to earn the job.

  46. Now that McElwain is out at Florida, duck fans have to be shitting themselves thinking Florida might poach Willie Haggard and his top 5 recruiting class to come to Florida.
You know Willie would make that jump if given the opportunity.

  47. I was wandering around Twitter earlier today and learned that Seton Hall uses the hashtag #Hallin. So they came across the Beavs using & tweeted” We wish @BeaverFootball and @chall27 the best of luck. If the hashtag is any indication, they should expect wins and championships! #HALLin” How awesome is that

  48. Great news about the new commits…..in order to maintain continuity and not lose any 2018 commits, I think you gotta go with #HALLin as the HC. Initially, I was thinking about Beau Baldwin, and I still think he’d be great, but the risk of losing most of your 2018 commits including Petras is too much to gamble on with someone other than CH. Plus, the team and the rest of the coaching staff seem to really trust and respect him. I say give him a shot and see what he can do especially if the Beavs win 2 more games.

It also appears that the C-War will be play for Oregon’s post season hopes if they can hit that magical 6-6 record. Ducks won’t beat WA or AZ so the Beavs could knock them out of contention if it plays out the remainder of the season as I think it will. I’d love nothing more than to see the Beavs end the Ducks season.

I also think some of the Ducks fan base is a little concerned that we now have a HC that seems to be getting the most out of his talent. I love the fact that CH can relate to these players and they have the #HALLin mentality. GO BEAVS!

    • I agree.

I saw something very interesting the night of the game.
I was on Reddit following the comments about our game on the CFB subreddit. There was a game thread up with over 2000 comments. The thing that stood out to me was that the entire country was rooting for us. On that subreddit, users can put their favorite team next to their user name. There were fans ranging from Alabama, to Clemson, to Penn State, to our fellow Pac-12 foes all rooting for us. I can’t even name them all. There were Stanford fans even commenting about us. A common theme was that our head coach was something else and our game day atmosphere was crazy. People from all over the country were commenting on how beautiful Corvallis looks. It was something else to see this. When we lost, people were upset and heartbroken and they weren’t even Beaver fans! Something changed that night, and even though we lost, something happened that I hadn’t seen in years. I am so happy that our current students got to experience that, because that’s the kind of gameday I experienced back in the day and these students deserve it. I think if we backed Hall up with some good assistants (verdict is out on our current OC and DC) I think he could be something special. He has the “it” factor.

      • It reminded me of the Erickson years, I haven’t seen our fans that involved in a game in what seems like forever. When I saw it was going to be on espn I thought this could be great for us or terrible for us. As much as I dislike espn, they did us a favor putting the game on a national feed and showing how beautiful Corvallis & osu’s campus is this time of year. I really can’t get over how loud the 25k in attendance were, I saw kids posting on Twitter about how their ears were ringing from the noise at the game.

        • Yes,except that horrid brock somebody, who looked as if he were wearing a rubber Halloween mask, talked about Stanford all night long. He mentioned Bryce Love being absent at least 25 times and only when it became clear that OSU was in the game did he finally throw a crumb or two. The other guy was a little better.

      • Well to be certain, the rest of the nation chimed in for us to beat Stanford because they were ranked #20. – Which takes away a spot for the east coast schools. But yeah, your underlining intention is valid, Hall does bring interest and energy. Just the 2000 comments were rankings boas d based.

      • Seriously? Who gives a shit? Yeah osu is the underdog everyone roots for. That sounds pathetic more than something to hang your hat on.

  49. Hire McElwain. Yeah, Florida’s program sucks, but it’s not entirely his fault. Will Grier transferred after being banned for one year. Nearly a dozen players were suspended and he knew nothing about it.

Florida made a knee-jerk reaction. Go after him, make Hall the DC, and bring in Art Briles as an OC.

  50. I think there are real rifts internally in the Athletic Dept beyond GA. Apparently there has been tremendous turnover inside the dept and maybe not for the better. A lot of uncertainty within the remaining staff leads to questions about Barnes too.

DeCarolis, Interim Mary ?, Stansbury now Barnes all in the same time frame as GA’s 2 1/2 years. No wonder he ws a bit frazzled. Who has had 4 bosses in 2 years? Ed Ray needs to set the tone for the entire Athletic Department and settle in with a long term vision towards football. As football wins, it becomes a rising tide that can lift other programs along the way and engage fans who share the experience of winning to donate for future projects.

West-Side expansion should be part of pulling in any new staff, even if it is Coach Hall. ANd that Coach should be all in on such a vision with a 3 year expectation to see it happen.

      • I was talking with an OSU employee pre-game and he mentioned that there are a lot of concerned people within the AD about personnel issues, drama. I don’t know anything beyond that. Just spit-balling what it might mean within the dept or for the future. Obviously more turnover is coming because some may have been brought in by GA. Beyond that, how is Barnes distancing himself when he admits he will take GA’s input on a new hire?

      • My wife worked with someone who had left OSU Athletic Department and told her it was a mess. Apparently there is no accountability, and is a good ole boys and you can get away with almost anything if you are in the club. She said that HR had the worst job there because you couldn’t enforce university personnel policies, because they would always get overthrown by upper management if you were in the “club”.

In my opinion, this is on Ed Ray for allowing that type of atmosphere in the Athletic Department.

  51. They’re committing to Hall because they know he’ll be there in some facet. Interesting both guys are D players. I think Hall will be on as DC if not HC.

  52. Looking ahead to the next 4 games,

    1. Cal – Road games are always tough. This one doesn’t look winnable. Beavs would have to score early and often to have a shot in this game. Don’t know that the offense can sustain that kind of success on the road.
    2. AZ – Tate has taken off and the defense doesn’t stand much of a chance against him. He’ll be setting records against a thin Beaver defense. Loss.
    3. ASU – They typically lose when they come up north late in the year. The most winnable game of the four.
    4. UO – It’s all about their QB play. Beavs haven’t shown much if any life on the road. Oregon will be coming off of two very tough games, @UW and vs AZ. If the Beavs win the ASU game and UO loses badly in the next two, I think the odds will be nearly 50/50 to win the civil war.

And I still think Hall should not be the next coach, no matter what happens in the next 4 games. It’s time to wipe the slate clean. #venables before the sec takes him.

    • So b prepared for another 4-5 year rebuild if Ch isn’t selected. 2018 recruits will bail faster than you think including petras. For continuity sake and recruiting I say retain Hall as the HC unless the beavs fall flat on their face the rest of this season.

      • Agreed, Hall can make us relevant again IMO.. he’s got the team excited again. I think Crocker is the next big get. WR package of Crocker, kolby Taylor and Hodgins could be nasty down the road..

    • @Bill, I usually agree with your analysis of upcoming games; this time I’m 75% on board, disagreeing only on the thought that the Cal game “doesn’t look winnable”.

I say that primarily based on the two defenses. To date, Cal ranks 107 on D and, while the Beavs are only 1 spot ahead of them, they are playing better lately (see Landry, et al) and will have the advantage of going against a one dimensional offense. Key could be the possible return of: Morris, Hudson, Ah-Hoy, and Irvine…..all of whom are listed as questionable.

  53. Read somewhere that the search firm has spent time with Pat Casey, Rueck, and Tinkle.

Rueck is the subject of latest podcast from the school.
A few remarks he made seem similar to some of Halls thoughts: having fun, expectations of success within the team.

He also said, “my job is to play the best” in response to a question of playing underclasspersons to build experience for the future. OTOH: “I don’t believe in playing seniors just cause they are seniors”.

He added, “I get to work with two teams”……..meaning he gets to coach the assistants as well as the players. Something Hall, if he gets the HC job, will face.

Oh yeah, he refers to his players, not as boys (or girls), but as “kids”.

    • That games pitching performance was pathetic…the home plate ump was pathetic…I’m not sure how either team won 100 plus games….The quality of the game has sure disintegrated. I’m a dodgers fan and rooted for Houston to win it….5 plus hours of watching video game type of baseball…13-12 with 7 hrs is just plain pathetic pitching. If that’s the best the MLB can offer, then I will stick with NC2A baseball.

      • “the home plate ump was pathetic”

His strike zone was pretty inconsistent all night long. Which probably contributed to the mess we both watched. I found nothing about that game fun to watch. It reminded me of the USC/ASU national championship game in the late 90’s that ended 21-14.

  54. “Hey Scott…. I found an old coach willing to move to Corvallis and run the shit show. Please send me a check for $200,000.00. Make it snappy… things are getting tight in the OL PBH household. For some reason the bottom has fallen out of my OSU memorabilia business. Thanks”
