  1. I just don’t see them winning this game. I hope I’m wrong, but the defense is too beat up right now and our offense can’t win a shootout

  2. I love the recruiting news coming in. Probably got a 3 Star OL and working to add JC DL’s. Exactly the guys we need to fill out the class.

  3. Pretty sure how this will turn out. Hall off to an 0-3 start. Expect the Bears to cover the 7 to 7.5 spread.

Down for keeping Hall on staff but as DC. Les Miles is interesting. Can’t pay too much for him though. Bring some of that Bayou spice to the NW and put some excitement into the program. Neuheisel I don’t think will get that much consideration but maybe a phone call feeler. Norvell starting to look like a better bet than Smith. We’ll know more in about 5 hours as to how serious some of these candidates could be.

  4. Cal’s D isn’t as deep as early in the year. Beavs have a focused offensive mind-set to counter Wilcox’s defensive plan. Baldwin is working with mismatched parts on his offense and cal qb leads the conference in ints.
I like the Beavs in a close game, 31-24

  5. I expect to see a lot more Thomas Tyner today, and a lot less Ryan Nall. No way to get around it, his fumble cost us the Stanford game. Hall says the right things, but it’s there.

  6. Beau 1-1 on full field TD drives on the day. 7-7 ballgame.

Will be intriguing to see the efficiency of both offenses and 3rd down conversion rates.

  7. Maybe we should save money on a coach and use that money to buy refs. They determine the outcome half the time, anyway. Good investment in this conference!

  8. Beau 2 for 2 on TD drives. OSU went 3 and Out last drive.

Looks like Baldwin understands the importance of this game. Focused on scoring Touchdowns and not petitioning while losing.

  9. It doesn’t take much to destroy our team’s will. Body language on D looks defeated already.
Every player looks like they’re waiting for the other guy to make a play instead of making it themselves.

  10. That’s why we’re a last place team. Dudes dropping everything, bad punts, Garrettson throwing a dirt ball on the pitch back, then falling down a yard short on an easy 3rd down conversion, etc. So close yet so far.

  11. Last drive by Beau didn’t end with 7, but 3 is still 3 more than OSU got on their last few drives. Beau will get 7 next time and I’ll give him a half time handjob….I mean round of applause….

  12. I’m not saying anyone on this board is doing this, but some are forgetting that Hall is not micromanaging this team, and he’s letting the OC and DC call the plays. Put the blame on them and not Hall. I don’t think McGiven has any business being an OC anywhere. Our team still can’t tackle and it’s amazing to see that this problem hasn’t been fixed in years. I would be curious to see what the team would look like under Hall but with different coordinators.

I sure would love to see our TCU RB transfer come in more often. Give him and the other RBs more chances.

  13. Beau’s team runs North/South while OSU runs east/west and can’t even get a 1st down. I have such a huge……what? They got a 1st down?

  14. Riles looks to be going Riles and pull off some victories when the seat gets scorching hot. #TPB are about to be divided again! So glad Crapperpants voluntarily left and we don’t have to deal with that shit.

Iowa also taking it to Urb

  15. Bear’s team obviously didn’t listen to his play calling instructions on that series. If they had, the Bears would have scored 8 more points. Beau had the right play calls, those stupid players just need to trust him……my Beau-ner is now currently only a semi-chubb right now.

  16. Beau goes 4 of 5 on scoring drives in the 1st half.

Drives team 56 yards in 30 seconds to set up that final scoring possession that never should have happened.

  17. Beau only needs 40 seconds to run a 2 minute drill. My marshmallow is starting to stiffen up again. Half time will be the perfect time for me to create 5 new pro Baldwin screen names to drum up artificial Baldwin excitement.

By the way, what was with the hairy ball-sack imagery in that dollar shave club commercial? Just killed my Beau-ner again. Damn it!

  18. Scott Barnes needs to hire Beau before half time and tell him not to put up 80 more points on the Beavers in the 2nd half. He could get 80 with his eyes closed.

  19. This targeting thing needs to go. It destroys the flow of the game.
The penalty is too stiff…losing players for a full game in many cases.

  20. Apparently you get ejected for making a great tackle. Tackle football is fucking horrible to watch anymore….no wonder this game is losing fans!!!!

  21. Our offense is not very good. Hall doesn’t stand much of a chance in this league. He’d do mostly 2-7 type seasons against Pac-12 competition. This staff has too many holes.

  22. We don’t have QB on the roster that can throw an 8 yard hitch for a first down. Angry called this QB fiasco before the first game. In hindsight he was spot on. QB position has been a dumpster fire for 3 years.

  23. OMG, this Nebby post game. Riley made a one or two sentence statement then said, “Questions?”…some come in and he sounds asleep answering them. How is this still going on there?

  24. Angry, can you please add a feature to block certain commenters. I’m not for censorship, but this guy here is flooding the comments with garbage that’s doing nothing for moving the conversation about beaver athletics forward.

  25. I’m beginning to think it’s Beau Baldwin’s world and we’re all just living in it. He just caused another Beaver defender to injur himself so as not to face Beau Baldwin’s offense any longer.

    Tartan!

    • Yeah, he’s terrible. Wasn’t the Nall fumble Houston missing his block? Either way, he’s been really bad.
I remember saying in the pre-season I was worried about him because of how tiny he looked. People called me crazy of course. Fascinating that people just appeal to authority nonstop even though authority is wrong so often. I mean just look at Houston. Huge head, tiny body. No way that’s a good player.

  26. Missed most of the 2nd and 3rd quarters. What’s the story? Is Baldwin not coaching today? I expected us to be down by 30 by now

  27. Someone who knows the rules:

Is there a difference between a hurdle and a leap-frog anymore? It used to be you couldn’t leap-frog, but you can jump a tackle as long as you don’t assist the jump with your hand.

  28. Feel like we should burn Willard’s RS and try for a spark. Garrettson is a backup. The odds of Willard being good are slim given his ~50% completion rate in HS. So it’s win-win because you burn the RS and get him off the roster sooner while also trying for a spark. He can run well, which would open things up.

  29. At least we already got a Nebby loss in the back, and we’ll get to watch Oregon get blown out.

I think Washington wins that one something like 41-14.

  30. Get your head out of your ass Clune. Back to back TDs for Cal and any Beavs shot in this game is all but over. Most of the OSU players look lost.

    • Or maybe on the players since they are very inexperienced. can get away with one or two guys being green, but not several. Doesn’t matter who’s coaching.

      • Not only that, but they are also playing different positions with the injuries and ejections.

So you can say someone is out of position on D on every play.

  31. Injuries, so many young person, BS targeting calls/ejections, blatant call holding, clune all working against the defense today.

  32. OSU got ragged on this morning on college game day. Had a special graphic for it even how Beavs only conference team in the nation not to won a conference game. Our defense is looking bad today. Yes I understand we are hurt and all but this is bad.

    • If some channel was showing that this morning, it was not correct. As of this morning, neither Baylor nor Kansas had won a game. I guess it’s now Kansas and the Beavs. And that’s just Power 5 teams.

  33. #TPB post game talking about how Riley doesn’t coach and just stands around with his hands in his pockets. He’s too nice and no one cares about letting him down.

“Can we get that he’s nice out of the way and talk about performance?”

  34. I’ll tell you what has made football unwatchable for me. I’ve watched Cal’s O-line (their whole team) do nothing but hold all day, and I think only a WR has been called on it once.

      • So many plays where our defenders at the point of attack can’t even turn to the ball as it goes by, and their names look like captchas as much as they stretch.

Ducks have been doing this for years. Apparently that’s what excites some people when it comes to football. It looks like cheating to me.

If they want to square that kind of play with the rule book, they need to remove holding as a penalty.

  35. What’s the Cal offense 3rd down conversion rate today? Seems like nearly 75%.

Laird has 214 yards running. WTF!

Not getting any easier for OSU. Have to face Khalil Tate next week.

  36. From Will’s Dad: “Sorry you boys are taking another one on the chin. The losing really get old. That’s the main reason I… err Will wanted to transfer. If you all hustle you can catch Will playing right now against Nebraska’s future head coach on ESPN.”

  37. I hope Chad Morris is on the search committee’s radar. Counting on energy and youth alone won’t do it. Need someone with a schematic advantage to flip this thing.

  38. So is anyone ready to admit that McGiven is the O’s problem?

Or do we have to keep sitting around, cutting GA’s head out of all our pictures?

I don’t care either way. We have three more weeks, then he’s gone.

  39. I was curious to see a road game. Hall took a blow today. Back to reality.

Considering the poor decisions by GA, staff mayhem, youth, and injuries this year, I don’t think we’re as far off as people say.

Disagree GA left the program worse off than Riley. The next coach has some tools to build with if we don’t see mass transfers.

Our D is going to get shredded by that AZ QB next week.

Only real positive this week is our FG kicker might finally have his 5-star head on straight.

  40. This team too much “Hall In!” emotion not enough fundamentals and execution today?

Who is 2nd on depth chart at center? Who replaces Houston next year?

Looks like the AZ game is a showcase for Tate and @ UO still looks like best chance of a win.

  41. The way Cal dominated was hard to take, running the ball down the Beavs throats. I know there are depth and injury issues, but I didn’t expect Cal to beat the shit out of both lines all day long. College football is so unpredictable, many expected this to be a good match up and it wasn’t.

    • Can’t stop the ball when your safeties are playing CB, and your backers are thin.

Can’t stop the pass when your S playing CB gives a 15 yard cushion on 3rd and 4.

      Whatcha gonna do?

        • They overloaded the A gap like Stanford did last week. It was obvious on the first drive, and we made no adjustments all game long.

But hey! On the flip side, CU bombed that same D all game long last week, and we did it once in the second half, scoring our only TD in the half. At least we had a plan to take advantage of that weak backside D.

  42. Honest question:
Was there anything about this game which should logically change the minds of either the supporters of Hall OR those of Beau?

    • Not really.

      Hall was short-handed. Baldwin’s O was boring.

But I do think Hall will sink in some’s minds because of this. They didn’t look as competitive and that will resonate with some.

      • Boring, yes but they did gain 475 on us. With better talent I expect Beau’s offense will look better.

Hall wasn’t high on my list and he did sink in my mind for whatever that’s worth. I really think we need someone with a scheme they bring with them.

        • Early in the season under GA OSU was giving up more yards (probably close to 480+on average) and more points (about 44-48 ave.) with more of a roster to work with. Maybe not a significant difference from today’s output, but still with so much less to work with, staff still doing better, and also scoring more points.

        • You do know Cal has recruited better then us almost every year for the past 2 decades.

They were a team that would swoop in and snag a couple of our highest rated recruits on signing day almost every single year.

On paper Cal had much better players

          • That doesn’t fit the narrative.

Also not fitting the narrative is that you can’t have better stats with better players. You can only have the same stats with better players. That’s just the way his O is set up. They could have passed all day if they wanted. We had nobody covering their receivers in the first ten yards most of the game. But our D line was slanting right into every run call they had. At times it looked like our DTs were hurrying to get out of the counter gaps, leaving nobody behind.

Our O is just a horrible scheme. This spread shit has got to go. I am so tired of watching a whole O-line take a step back before doing anything on every play.

  43. KEY STATS: Cal outgained Oregon State 475-299 and had 16 more first downs than the Beavers.

Beavs got beat soundly on both sides of the ball today. Only thing Hall showed me was some faith in the FG kicker.

  44. It turns out those of us pointing to this game as a probable loss weren’t just being pessimistic for no good reason. What a surprise.

  45. Did the refs call the game leaning in favor of both offenses or just Cal’s offense?

Listening to Parker and Wilson it sounded like the Beav defense was hindered early on by the personal foul, targeting and ejection calls. How legit were those calls? Multiple times Wilson sounded like Cal received the benefit of no-calls, spot of ball, non-holding, non-targetting penalties multiple times. WIlson wasn’t comp;aining, just many mentions of odd calls.

Physical tackling is penalized and Pac12 football is simply glorified 7 on 7 drills with push tackling at the end of plays.

    Solution:
A)Decide to go with an offensive guy who runs a 7 on 7 spread offense like Baldwin, or
B)Go with a Goergetown bball model of being so physical/holding/aggresive defensively that the refs decide they can’t call everything and you gain an advantage over time which will stop the 7 on 7 type offenses.

Beavs rarely get any help from refs and it is doubly costly when they get 2-3 ejections for what are usually legal hits (if against the Beavs). Now next week will be a loss as well.

    • Both targeting calls were legit by the way the rule is written..I watched the entire game and it was officiated pretty good although I thought cal got the benefit of some holding that was not called….beavs undermanned on defense and cal won the LOS on both sides of the ball.
      .

      • The first was questionable. And if they were legit, Cal had two instances where they should have lost players to the locker room.

So the complaint isn’t so much that they were bogus by the letter of the law. It’s that the letter of the law only applied to us.

        Some holding?

  46. Oklahoma over OSU, 62-52, with over 1,400 yards of offense combined. How the game has changed…It’s like an NBA all-star game, with unspoken understanding that D will NOT be played….

  47. Chad Morris
    Brett Venables
    Kevin Sumlin
    Les Miles
    Troy Brown
    Dennis Erickson
    Craig Bohl
    Mike Norvell
    Jonathan Smith
    Beau Baldwin

Each of these guys should be contacted. I think the contract has been offered to Jonathan Smith since the UW game week and this is part of GA stepping aside. Some booster who actually care began to push after the horrid start, only a guess. The $200k for search firm is all smoke and mirror optics. Hall as DC probably But I’m just guessing, it is OSU football afterall. Likely to be a bad move whatever is decided.

  48. So hopefully the cal game will end the talk of Hall becoming the HC next year.

Yes, I think we all feel, he’ll become a very good coach. But it’s not going to be with the Beavs. He’d need roughly 4-5 years to get things really going. Fans and the school don’t have that kind of patience after GA. That would be 8 years in the wilderness.

Need an experienced coach (HC or asst) to jump start the program. If they leave then the next coach can start off with decent pieces instead of a bare cupboard.

Still think the ASU game is very winnable. Civil War is winnable if the Beavs beat ASU.

  49. I think Hall had his window of opportunity and if he had pulled out two straight victories the outcry for consideration would have reached levels Barnes couldn’t ignore. Hall’s ship has sailed. The team really looked more like GA’s Beavs yesterday than Hall’s minus the turnovers. Let’s be realistic, after the first drive they were dominated. Cal fumbled in the Red Zone. Another game of UNDER 300 yards of total offense. Flat on the road for the 15th plus time in the GA era. Youthful enthusiasm gets you so far. If Hall has ideas and details that are far above Clune’s, keep him as DC, but otherwise this ain’t working.

  50. Still don’t understand how peoples requirement of Hall to “prove” himself is to go out and win a bunch of games. Unrealistic mofos

75% of our starting secondary is injured
    Paper thin d line
    Struggling o line
Arguably the worst qb in power 5 football

This shit didn’t just magically get fixed because GA walked away. This team is a very thin, bad football team in a tough conference. Lombardi reserected with belechick as an assistant wouldn’t have much more success. The season is fucked.

If the players quit trying, start getting into trouble and fighting, recruits start decommitting, or schemettically were terrible then it makes sense.

But judging this last half a season by wins and losses on the field is short sighted.

    • Because the Beavers can’t afford to hire someone who has no experience at this point. and get all giddy because a coach has “energy”. The program is on the cusp of becoming the next Kansas.

If they have talent, which some here say they do, then they need to beat a couple of teams with like talent. If you want to make the argument that they do not have talent, then does Hall have any responsibility for the current situation or does he get a free pass because he was a position coach?

It’s a unique and maybe not fair situation, but Hall needs to “win” on the job because position coaches don’t make the jump to HC in Power 5 football.

      • Players rode the emotional high for 1-2 weeks and are now much more likely to revert to their true level which isn’t that good. No Bryce Love was obvious reason OSU even hung with Stanford and their QB had a stinker of a game.

I expect Beavs will lose by 13-19 points to Arizona. Hall was right as interim only. Barnes now needs to find a head football coach prepared to win in this conference. I see 3 or 4 names out there I think can get the job done at OSU so we are a factor again in the Pac 12. Names like Miles, Baldwin, Norvell and Sumlin. Smith after most of those names.

    • The reason Hall has to prove himself is that he has little track record to judge him by: Some years coaching high school football, and a few years as a grad assistant and position coach. That is not a Power 5 coaching job resume. Other candidates will have longer histories and experience that grant insight into their coaching ability that Hall simply doesn’t have. Hall is creating this track record now, and it’s not looking great. Much can be likely attributed to addition by subtraction of Wackopants Andersen.

I like Cory Hall, the man. He gets credit for keeping the team together after some very tough times, so I also like Cory Hall, the interim… but I’m not sold on Cory Hall Head P5 Coach. He may be great in the future, but we need someone great now.

      • Amen, although I flinch when I see the word great because to me that could mean a GREAT BIG SALARY which I’m not in favor of.

        Other than that, amen.

  51. I agree that Cory Hall is not the best candidate for our next coach, but has nothing to with the fact that he can’t magically turn a bunch of crappy players into a winning football team. That’s an unrealistic expectation. So it’s fine to say he’s not ready to be a P5 head coach, but don’t use his inability to turn water into wine the reason.

      • If Barnes tied Hall’s hands regarding his OC, then we already know Hall won’t be our next head coach. If he didn’t, and McGiven is still our OC, then we can assume he won’t be our next head coach.

Hall’s vision as told by him is starting to be contradicted by play-calling, just as GA’s words were contradicted by product on the field. It’s not as blatant as it was in Game 1. But it’s there. If Hall accepts that, he’s not fit to be a head coach yet.

        • Seems like I read somewhere that Barnes was giving Hall free reign (or something similar) after a couple weeks. Did I mis-read, or maybe I’m dreaming?

        • To me it’s an odd situation, Hall’s team should be playing with reckless abandon because under a normal situation they would have nothing to play for 1-11, 2-10, 3-9, who gives a fuck (open up the playbook, get crazy), but Hall is coaching conservatively most of the time because at least the perception is that he’s coaching for his job. The games are taking on an importance that wouldn’t be there, but the team can’t get it over the hump. And who really knows, Barnes might have no intention of considering Hall and he would be justified with that opinion. We all might be making more out of this than it is. The Beavers have played better against shittier competition, not a real big surprise. They did the same thing last year.

  52. To me it all comes down to who’d Hall (or any other current non-HC we might consider) would put on their staff.

If Hall has a staff with quality coordinators and good recruiters Hall can win. I still think Baldwin makes the most sense but he also would need to sell me on the staff he plans to bring with him.

        • What has happened for one season?

He has taken a team loaded with talent geared for his preferred O, and he’s driven it into the ground.

That’s what has happened for one season.

Are you supposing FCS coaching translates to P5 coaching? That would be an extreme failure in thinking. Craig Bohl shows you precisely how a coach who is an annual champion on that level does in a mid-major, let alone some scrub who lucked into a championship years ago and had good teams since because he had better tweeners than other FCS schools.

So just answer the question, or stop dropping one of the most inexperienced coaching names you can think of like he’s acceptable.

          • Lol, Cal was universally seen as the worst team in the PAC before the season; sometimes even your obvious trolling attempt is beyond weak

          • I do find it funny how somehow getting better “tweeters” to come play at EWU is a negative to so many, it’s called recruiting, it’s not like those players were consigned to EWU.

          • Well, because he’s not going to land many Tweener equivalents (dudes choosing OSU over USC) at this level. Definitely a negative that he bullied people with that type of player since he won’t get it at OSU.

That said, you guys should probably just wait 3 weeks instead of arguing about it, because we’ll have a coach by then.

          • This is where I disagree, yes. He won’t beat USC in recruiting but the fact that he got these kids to come to EWU over other FCS options still indicates that he can recruit. Its not about beating USC for kids (no one is gonna do that at OSU); the question is can he get kids to choose OSU over WSU, Boise State, Utah, and maybe Cal.

And his ability to get kids to choose EWU over other FCS options demonstrates that yeah he might be able too. Again, it makes no logical sense to me how out recruiting other FCS programs is somehow a negative. That is just a ridiculous argument.

          • I’m not even worried about it, because if we choose Baldwin we deserve to lose for another four years.

Cal was one of the worst teams in the Pac last year. That’s why they were picked to be one of the worst this year. Guess what… they are that.

But they did have one of the best offenses in the nation last year. So don’t give me some ignorant play about their O being bad because they were projected to be bad. The pieces are in place or that O to work pretty well, if not as well as Dykes would run it. I would have expected someone of Baldwin’s reputation to have that O above the mean in the Pac. That he hasn’t done so should tell you he was all hype, and you might want to look at who his OC was for all those years you thought he was an O genius.

          • And I wasn’t arguing for or against Baldwin, just that I’d want to know his staff first.

For me it does come down to realistic options, people bring up a guy like Norvell and yeah he’d be a no brainer of a hire but I just don’t see him wanting the job. He’s gonna get better offers in my opinion so to me he simply isn’t realistic.

Realistic hires for me include older HC like Tedford and Long and coordinators like Baldwin and Smith. I don’t see us getting that hot shot mid-major HC (with the possible exception of Mike Sanford Jr. who I hope the call), those guys will get better offers so I don’t really even consider them.

          • I’m trying to figure out where I ever called Baldwin a genius. I sure as fuck don’t recall ever saying such a thing but whatever the voices in your mind are telling you. You are still a fucking idiot.

          • If you think he is a legit P5 head coaching candidate, you better think he’s a fucking genius.

Otherwise, you’re just asking for a mediocre FCS head coach to be our head coach.

            So… thanks for that.

          • hahahah….you don’t have to be an “offensive genius” to be a quality HC.

You have to be able to manage personalities and put together a quality staff. Which is why I said “I’d want to know who was gonna be on his staff”

          • To be fair to Baldwin, he’s working with someone else’s QB recruits and a unit that’s seriously depleted at the skill positions.

          • Cal may be depleted at skill positions, but they are really deep there.

And yes… you must be a football genius at the FCS level in order to move up and be successful at the P5 level. Beauner is not that, obviously. He has a learning curve that is steeper than even I thought at the beginning of the year. He may not even pan out as an OC at this rate.

You might as well substitute McGiven’s name for any time you want to drop Beauner’s at this point. But I want to see who McGiven would choose for his staff first.

If the search committee comes back with his name on the list, then it will have been money wasted.

      • I know but he is just so predictable that I can’t help it. I need some entertainment till the Seahawks game starts. And internet trolls like Jack can provide it.

          • So you think that me objecting to one of the worst OC’s in the Pac this year as a viable head coaching candidate is stupidity. And your in kind response is to make an ad hominem argument.

            Cool.

          • Yes, you are right, they are a TD per game worse than last year and that proves Baldwin is garbage, I get it.

Couldn’t have anything to do with losing a NFL level QB, nope Baldwin just sucks. Thanks for showing me the light

          • And why will he be on that list?

According to you it’s because he’s a viable P5 head coaching candidate. Since the numbers don’t support that notion, you have to think he’s a genius whose potential is greater than his performance. If you want to blame his players for that, fine. The buck stops with them.

And that’s where it will stop at OSU if the committee digs so far into the box that they pull his name out.

          • He’s not viable according to me, he’s viable according to virtually every human who pays any attention to college football and coaching changes, sorry you choose to live in a different reality

          • If you want a successful FCS head coach who has moved up to FBS either as a head man or as a successful P5 coordinator, you can choose from Bohl or Moorhead. Beauner does not fit in that category.

It would not surprise me in the least that he does end up on a list for OSU with as defeatist an attitude as we have around here and the only evidence provided by like minds being “just because.”

I would like to know what makes people so certain of “just because.” There’s nothing objective which says so. There must be something subjective that you’re refusing to tell me.

I’ve heard players love playing for him. That’s an intangible. Is there something else that makes you so certain that the numbers should not be what we look at when evaluating him?

          • I don’t need to “explain” anything to you. I’ve met Baldwin, I’ve talked football with Baldwin. He knows his shit.

But at the end of the day I have no clue if he will succeed and neither do you. I’ve explained why I like him multiple times, I don’t need to keep doing it simply because you can’t see how losing an NFL caliber QB could lead to a drop off in production at Cal.

          • Of course he knows his shit. Riley knows football too. People know football.

We’re talking about needing someone who can lead young men on the P5 level. He has not shown that consistently as of now. I would love to have him as our OC next year. I think he will understand much of what he didn’t at the beginning of this year.

          • And you haven’t explained why you like him other than just now saying you’ve met him. I’m sure he’s a fine person. That’s not the point.

Nobody has explained with numbers why they think saying “just because” many times is explaining something many times.

          • Actually I have and see no need to do it again just because you didn’t read it in previous threads.

And again, at no point have I claimed he is the be all end all. He is the best of the coordinator candidates in my opinion. You disagree.

  53. I’m not sure how strong an endorsement it is, but Hall kept the Cal game closer than GA would have.

We got absolutely outplayed on both OL and DL yesterday, so that’s a glaring issue. That said, the OL has been good at times this year and sometimes you just have a bad game. I think they’re still decent as a unit. Our DL is not.

McGiven’s play calling got much more predictable after the first drive, which I don’t understand. We do some good stuff on offense, but it’s just not enough. He has to go.

Even with a competent OC, we could have kept it closer, but we’re limited by our QB situation. McGiven is the QB coach, so he takes the blame for this. He has to go.

I’m still not convinced Clune is the problem on defense. We had a guy playing his first game ever at CB and a freshman who’s clearly not ready on the other side. When you lack talent on the DL and CB, there’s not much you can do to stop the other guys.

Next year, we’ll have a more experienced and deeper secondary and more experienced LB’s. There’s talent there if we can keep it from bolting.

We’ll have the better OL guys back and some promising redshirts eligible, and a good stable of RB’s and WR’s. We’ll have more depth at QB and the chance for Willard, Luton, or a true frosh to step up. I don’t think Luton is a step down from the way DG played yesterday.

So do we blow everything up and start over with another 3 year rebuild? I don’t see how you can do that in a way that has a high probability of success. We’re likely looking at a HC with no HC experience, and the fan base and donors don’t want to sit through 5-6 straight years with no promise. That being the case, you need a guy that can make the most of the talent that’s here and maintain some continuity.

We need someone that can upgrade the DL talent, bring in a good OC, and bring in someone to mentor the QB’s or a grad transfer QB. I don’t care who it is as long as they can do that.

  54. “So do we blow everything up and start over with another 3 year rebuild?”

    Yes!

You need a solid foundation for something to be worth building upon. Andersen and Co. have not provided that. There are some good pieces, and a good coach will make those pieces work.

    • Besides DL depth, what’s not solid?

If you’re talking scemes, I agree 100%. But there is talent in place, and the next coach will get at least a couple good years out of that talent.

    • Our recruiting doesn’t look significantly different than the bottom third to half of the conference. We have a deficiency at qb and oc, yes. Hall has shown he can motivate/lead; plus what he says publicly and privately don’t seem incongruent.

    • If Andersen and company have built anything in the past 2.5 seasons, none of it is so valuable to risk not making the best hire this time around. To qualify as “another” rebuild would imply the program is building right now, which empirically it is not.

  55. I have no coach in this AB meaningless discussion, but I note that Wyoming defeated Colorado State yesterday, in a heavy snowstorm; after trailing until nearly the end of the game. Meanwhile, a former North Dakota State quarterback excels with the Philadelphia Eagles.

    • Bohl is looking more interesting as the season wears on. Nebby fan doesn’t like him for his association with Solich. But he runs a blue collar program well.

I would not be surprised to see him get an interview here or at a couple other places.

  56. I thought Val’s offense was called pretty well yesterday. They had success in the run and stuck to what worked allowing for the occasional nice pass play. I agree that we need a HC who can use to the fullest who we have already and at the same time continue to build.
Is Baldwin that guy? An isn’t he the guy who recently went through a bunch of personal problems (cheating on wife) or is that someone else?

  57. Lol at minimizing Cal’s offense yesterday. They outgained OSU by 16 first downs. Something like 27 to 11. Without that fumble on the 5 yard line Cal would have been 5 of 6 on deices with points with 3 of them touchdowns. Not that much later they scored two more consecutive TDs.

Did Cal even punt yesterday? I read somewhere they did not.

    • For sure. They maxed out their columns yesterday. It was like we were playing a prevent D all day. It was a bend then bend some more D.

I think it might have had to do with not being able to hit the O for fear of leaving the game, and the other side not getting that respect.

But there was a point where we were still giving better than we got late in the 3rd. We just fell apart completely in the 4th. There were a lot of hands on hips. If experience teaches you anything, it should teach you that endurance is nothing to laugh at.

That’s what Cal’s O can look like all the time, btw. Tougher Ds will slow them down. But they have a lot of skill on that side of the ball. I think Baldwin will be a better OC next year. And he’ll probably be killing it when Bowers is a senior.

At that point, he will be worthy of a P5 head job. He certainly won’t be losing out on jobs like Nevada any more. If you look around the college landscape right now, Baldwin is not being mentioned as a candidate at other places. There’s no demand for him because they’re waiting to see how he does. There’s a corner which he has yet to turn to show that he’s got “it”. Moorhead got it day one. He should be on our list. Bohl should be on our list. He’s topped out at Wyoming. Let’s face it, they’re the worst place to try to recruit. Try convincing young non-white men to come to a place where they strap dead gay students to barbed-wire fences. Norvell looks good. Schiano got beat up yesterday, but he’s a builder looking for a jobsite. I’m not sold on Mike Sanford Jr. since Notre Dame looks a ton better without him, and he has his hands full right now. I love the mention of Ken Norton Jr. from the other day. And I was impressed most yesterday by Justin Wilcox. He’s very attentive to what’s going on, even-tempered, and you know who’s in charge of that sideline at all times. If we don’t try to poach him (and I think we have a shot because of geography), someone else will do so. Cal’s going to have to pony up more cash, and I don’t think they can do it.

      • A sneak taking of Wilcox and his staff is worthy of consideration. Great way to get a 2 for 1 of Wilcox and Baldwin. Family from Junction City just 20 minutes from Corvallis.

        • That’s what I was thinking. I was surprised at the beginning of all this that people weren’t hyping him.

He’s a very attainable get if he’s interested.

      • “Try convincing young non-white men to come to a place where they strap dead gay students to barbed-wire fences.” For the sake of accuracy, and only that, I point out that Matthew Shepard died days after the beating. And THEY – inferring that it is Wyoming policy – is misplaced. The two misfits who committed the horrendous crime are in prison and, as it now stands, will remain there their entire lives.

Wyoming has many memorials and organizations dedicated to Matthew Shepard. It is still painful to Wyoming residents, after nearly 20 years.

Anti-gay forces from throughout the country – Kansas comes to mind – not Wyoming – created a god circus at his funeral. His father wore a bullet-proof vest and pleaded that his son’s death not be used as an agenda. I assume that would have included Wyoming football.

          • It’s not cheap.

The meth trade on the high plateau and on the plains is just out of control. I’d feel safer in South Central LA at night than I would at any of the truck stops around Laramie.

I’ve overheard not so quiet chuckles about black lives matter, as if it affected these people. I’ve listened at checkouts to giggles of how the local gay bar had a couple grenades thrown through the front door… but they were dummies, so it’s all funny.

You can read or mitigate all you want into the how much the culture is or isn’t saddened or whatever by what happened in their town. But the subcultures allowed to thrive in those regions are what lead to this little push over the top. I’m not saying it’s as bad as some parts of Texas or the deep South. But it’s bad.

Granted, racism against American Indians is probably the worst in those regions. But they are the only non-whites for long stretches.

    • Re: cheap shot. All of what you write in response may be true. However, you did not reference that; only a single, horrific incident and insinuated that that was perfectly acceptable to all inhabitants of Wyoming and was practically in the state’s constitution. Clearly, that one incident, at least, was not.

      • Suffice it to say I don’t go on fishing trips there any more because of the subculture. It may not be written, and the one act may have been a harsher beating than all the others. But there are numerous others.

Where there are truckloads of Confederate bubbas driving country roads and ostensibly doing God’s work, you can’t say the subculture isn’t what it is. People go along to get along… until they’re shocked and saddened.

  58. Canzano hyping Smith. Do not have him in top few but sure he will be interviewed.

If somehow Smith gets hired then definitely prefer Lake as DC over Hall. In that scenario you offer Hall to stay as CB coach and ASHC. 1.4 million to Smith, 800K to Lake and 350K for Hall if he wants it. If Smith got the gig with Lake in tow, then Beavs would be delivering a blow to UW at the same time.

Similar in fashion to taking Cal’s staff as far as weakening the competition.

    • More like 500-600K for Hall. He’d also should be recruiting coordinator in my opinion.

I’d need to know who Smith would hire as OC.

      • That’s DC level money and Lake gets the premium for experience and to leave Petersen to follow Smith if that happened. Lake absolutely dominated Oregon. Hall done ok with recruiting but not going to triple his salary for jumping around. 400K tops. That’s a doubling so more than fair and he can take on recruiting coordinator duties to justify that.

        • If you are making him AHC you better pay him like an AHC. Bob Gregory is LB coach and AHC at UW and makes $550K. Lake makes 650K as co-Defensive Coordinator (and really is just DB coach since he doesn’t call the defense). Pete Kwiatkowski dominated Oregon as he is the true Defensive Coordinator at UW and he makes 875K. Smith makes 700K as offensive coordinator. 800K isn’t a premium, its basically market rate. UO is paying Leavitt 1.15 million to be DC.

If you want to compete in the PAC they need to stop being cheap when it comes to assistants. If you give Hall the AHC job you need to pay him like someone with the AHC job.

          • Rather not give him AHC then. Don’t think he’s done very much to earn it. Doubling his salary for the actual results we have seen is a gift. Recruiting is one area he has shown some promise so recruiting coordinator it is. That usually earns 50K extra tops but I very generously doubled his pay when I have doubts about that. Pay needs to go to the guys putting W’s on the board. Way you descrbe it Beavs may have a shot at Lake if Smith was guy to get the gig. Lets not screw that up by overpaying Hall and then not being able to lure Lake to come with Smith if it happens. Smith would need all the legit help he can get. A guy winging it isn’t a great plan for OSU.

          • If paying Hall 500K vs. 400K means OSU can’t lure a quality DC than it doesn’t matter. The program might as well leave the PAC now. That is literally peanuts to a PAC program. Lake (and Smith or literally anyone else) would be fools to take the job if the program is is in that poor of financial shape when it comes to putting a staff together.

You know you could just say you don’t like Hall and don’t see his value instead of pretending you are being “generous” giving him a raise.

          • Any PAC program that is serious about competing should have at least 4 assistants making 500K or more. If that is too rich for OSU they shouldn’t be in the PAC.

    • Loser hypes OSU alum with loser thinking.

AB poster runs with it and makes little sense in the process.

Readers wish loser would hype Urban Meyer just so people would see what a loser he is.

  59. I like pay bump for Hall + AHC + recruiting coordinator.

One thing I think people are glossing over: DC is not necessarily a logical fallback for Hall. In fact, he may be better qualified at HC than DC. DC requires a very different, more technical skill set. If we do keep Hall as DC, we might want a defensive HC to help mentor him. Or hire a defensive consultant…I don’t know.

Just saying that of all the good things we’ve seen from Hall, none of it would necessarily translate to DC success.

  60. If OSU ended up with Smith and Lake in any scenario then I would prefer Erickson as OC over most other options. He is a good offensive mind and is smart about when to stretch the field. After 3 or 4 years he can retire for good with OSU as his final spot. That leaves Hall as recruiting coordinator and DB coach. I like Hall in limited fashion where he achieves his value. When he reaches I find he gets too distracted from the actual winning needed and the program’s best interest.

  61. If going to try and pull a Fuskies coordinator, why not the great one, Pete Kwiatkowski? He may not want to be an HC and/or may have hitched his wagon to Petersen, but he has proven much more than Smith. I think Smith would be a terrible, Helfrich-like, hire.

  62. A none coach related subject…. if Tyner gets a medical 6th year and Nall comes back do we loose Pierce to transfer?…. I kept wondering that when I see Tyner ring the second option back…. it would duck to loose Pierce….. he has a big upside his Junior and Senior years.

    • Are you saying there’s a duck loose in the backfield, because you see Tyner and his Oregon Pac12 champ ring back there? Don’t worry, he’s a Beav, for now.

I would venture to guess Tyner comes back as long as he is granted the hardship, which he is eligible for but not guaranteed.
And no, Pierce won’t transfer because of that alone. I’ve seen no indication that Pierce will transfer. Why transfer when you’d have to sit a year?

      • God damn auto correct…. being instead of ring and suck instead of duck…although duck and duck are interchangeable now that I think about it….

        • Could you imagine the transfer chaos every off season if they allowed that?
No, you’re tied to the school and play by the same transfer rules as eveybody else, despite a coach leaving

      • I love AP’s game, and he’s been steadily improving which is great to see. It’s on the coaching staff to make sure they use all of the backs properly so they all stay happy.

    • Don’t see any guys transferring. It’s not like anyone guy is getting way too many touches vs the others. Though it would be nice to see Pierce get a few more handoffs.

  63. On to the az game. This won’t be a close one. UA favored by 23.

I’m guessing Tate will rush for around 200 yards and 3 scores.

Looking like a 56 to 21 type game. Beavs offense will score some points but can’t keep up with Tate running all over the place.

Not sure there’s a path to a win here. Just need to get out with no injuries and no suspensions.

    • Say screw it: Go wishbone for the rest of the season with Nall taking the snaps, Tevorris Lines up as the FB and Tyner and Pierce at the RB slots.

May be the only way to really slow the game down. Grind out more first downs, give the D more rest and chew more clock limiting their points.

        • Family obligations have prevented me from watching and analyzing every minute of every game this year, but it seems like every time Nall has ran the Wild Beaver he’s been able to chip off about 5 yards?

At this point opposing defenses have zero respect for our passing game (which is justified) and are keying on all the running backs. Garretson can only really run the read option once or twice a game due to 0 QB depth, so he’s driving a rudderless ship.

We might as well go big and get all of our best position group on the field. What is there to lose at this point? Let the hoss’s try their best to drive block and go down swinging.
