  1. Awesome that we had our 2 head coaches make tandem goodwill trips to local high schools, where we arent currently recruiting any 2018 kids, while Iowa puts a full court press on our key recruit. Great strategy. Couldn’t one coach tour the same number of local high schools?(probably in less time too) While the other coach plays defense just days before signing day?

    But we’re all smiles here.

  2. This was my first marker of progress. I’m guessing this makes it harder to get someone like Crocker. Let’s see what the Beavs end up with.

Success breeds success. A cluster breeds, well…

  3. Golly, that’s a neat deal. He’ll be back here later when he gets run out of Iowa – isn’t that how things work? Hashtag thirdtimesacharm

  4. Anyone think BeavRecruiting can dm him and ask what happened? Also maybe if we show enough support he switches back? This really fucking blows.

    • An article said Petras had spoken with Sean Mannion and Jared Goff (from Petras’s high school). Perhaps that wasn’t such a good thing.

    • How many QBs have Smith and Lindgren put in the NFL?

Other than RIley being on the staff what’s the real connection to those former OSU QBs?

I don’t think OSU can still claim that because it sent Moore and Anderson to the NFL in 2005/2007 that it means you’ll have a good shot at the NFL in 2021 or 22. [Not counting Canfield because he was in the NFL for a short time and Mannion remains to be seen how long he’ll stick around).

  5. So Eggers doesnt know what hes talking about…..great. Petras did commit to GA so…maybe he has questionable judgment? Probable not, but this stuff happens at every college that has coaching changes, it’s the nature of the beast. Most likely we will lose more guys, it happens. Let’s hope JS has some tricks up his sleeve.

  6. Thought so.Riley recruited him at two schools; double jeopardy. The twitter photo appears as though Smith is the quarterback and Riley is the pater familias.

  7. Wow. And just like that Little Jonny Training Wheels falls off his bike and busts out his front teeth. I thought grandpappy was gonna hang on the the seat for him?

I officially have zero confidence in this “coaching staff” from here on out. The ONE FUCKING GUY they absolutely had to hang on to and he’s the first one out the door. To fucking Iowa of all places. Not USC. Not Notre Dame. Not UCLA.

    Fucking Iowa.

    Garbage.

  8. It blows me away that Hall and company were able to hold on to this kid through this entire shit show of a season and as soon as they hand the reins to Simple Jonny they shit the bed and he’s gone.

  9. Hmmm, let’s see if Smith can give Petras the pancake treatment and flip him back – the LOI is what matters right? Verbals are only verbals…but he does look gone.

Also, Smith may really need to pull that UW transfer for insurance and stability (and keep him healthy!) and start lining up ’19 QBs. Dukart looks like he’ll need a RS year to put on weight/strength.

RE Luton – I was never against the Luton signing, only the way it played out. Given his lack of DI experience I thought he should have been brought along slowly and given increasing opportunity commensurate with demonstrated progress. But Andersen rushed him out there and McLovin called shit games. Luton needed more conservative, run-heavy game plans.

I can hear Riley on Luton: “He can really spin it!” and would be concerned Riley would push for something like a 65:35 pass:run ratio just based on Luton’s arm. The weight given to Riley’s role is important. I think Smith/Lindgren prefer more balance.

  10. Fellas, can we all just calm down a bit? This whole “losing our future QB” thing is not a huge deal. What we should be focusing on is this; what kind of gum does Smiley like to chew and is OSU providing him a new bike in his deal? Is Niner in fact taller than Rueck? In a cage fight would Casey literally kill the all?

Just saying. With the shit show that is sure to be the ’18 season let’s focus on something else.

    • Golly, what a neat deal. It’s a good thing Training Wheels loaded his staff up with stud recruiters so he could waste his time fucking around with the office ladies all day.

    • You guys are so stupid because you hate Mike Riley. Mike Riley is such a nice guy, that hating him is hating nice.

The perception of Riley as a great coach and a developer of special young men is surpassed by nobody. This is the only lace on the interwebs anyone can find such vie hatred of nice.

Besides, he’s not the head coach. Trust Coach Smith. He knows what he’s doing without having any input from Coach Riley the Great, except when he doesn’t know what he’s doing when he doesn’t know what he doesn’t know. Absolutley nobody anywhere disrespects Coach Smith now that he made the low ego decision to hire the greatest assistant in the history of assistants.

  11. So the potential grad transfer from Udub is checking out Iowa State? More good news.
JS and MR pumping hands at Philomath Middle school.

  12. So now we go after the former Boise St QB , Wilson, who just left Boise St because he thought Peteas was staying at OSU, but now he has burned his bridge at Boise. QB musical chairs.

  13. I definitely blame this on Riley. I see the following scenario as not only plausible but likely. Ferentz to Petras: “Yes, you might have committed to Oregon State, and you might like Coach Smith, but he’s not really running the show there, Mike Riley is. I’ve gone against him here the last three years. Beat him every time. His team never really played well. There’s more upside with us.”

  14. I try not to get too emotionally invested in what a 17-year-old wants to do for his college career, but this one stings a bit. I guess it’s just because he had been so high on Oregon State for so long, only to flip five days before signing. It just kind of bums me out.

      • Does everyone appreciate that Riley and Eggers are friends? We now need to take Eggers opinions on MR with a grain of salt as we did before. I still thought he did the best job of reporting overall during the MR era, so I will still read him.

  15. You crack me up. The fact you are solely blaming Mike Riley for this is comical. J Smith already had in home visit with him, so he couldn’t go back and re visit the kid. The truth is, you have no idea (again) if the staff wants to move away from a pocket passer, with limited mobility, or if KJ Carter Samuels is coming, or whatevvvvver it may be, neither do I, or anyone on this site.

Yea, it sucks to lose this kid, but seriously Mike Riley is not the scapegoat for every damn thing that happens here. Maybe he saw your twitter feed and your bashing of all things Oregon State last week and decided he didnt want to deal with your shit….Highly unlikely, but plausible.

Everything is going to be OK.

  16. Im not trying to defend Riley i could give a shit if he’s made fun of but damn be clever. The jokes being used r unimaginative played out and just not funny. The same joke over and over gee golly thats neat, i need some gum let me hop on my bike. Derp derp

    • Yeah, this is what I had heard at one point, didn’t know what the charge was though.

People were saying he had mono, but he was out slapping high fives to the players wearing a white hospital gown? That never made any sense.

    • There was a mention of him on Reddit, that he punched a chick in the face and that some other team members jumped someone at a party a few months ago…

      • IIRC, team members “jumped” someone, and a chick caught it all on her phone. SC “punching” or whatever of the woman is possibly the least of his offenses if what was rumored occurred. He went after her to get her phone and erase the vid. In doing so, sure, he was probably forceful.

The real… sorry… worse crime was thinking that he had a right to steal that content from anyone. The physicality only follows the mindset that football is king and needs to be protected.

  17. Turns out my GF and I were right on the money just looking at Seth Collins face and attitude on Day 1. I said he looked like a sociopath; she said he looked like a guy who would fuck other player’s girlfriends. Yeah. He had a kid within weeks on campus and now assault. What a fucker.

        • Maybe, but reports I read are he’s better at baseball and Casey wants him. Arizona State recruited him for baseball, so that should tell you something. I think he does want to play both and is leaning football, but I think he’ll wind up playing baseball. Like Sanders, who wound up playing various sports.

Dukart is moble, but Petras was the much better QB in terms of mechanics and efficiency. I’m personally not too high on him. I think he’s a backup QB at this level. I’d like to be wrong and feel confident we got our QB, but I don’t with him. Did with Petras.

          • The smart play on his part is to trend towards baseball, but that doesn’t diminish his skills on the football field.

While I agree that Petras has the higher ceiling of the two as well as more polished for Pac12 play, I have to disagree that Dukart is only backup material. Dukart was pretty solid this year in a highly competitive season of Oregon high school football. 33 TD to 5 INT with similar completion % to Petras is nothing to shake a finger at. He might not be a day one starter as Petras MIGHT have been, but I sill see a high IQ player that makes the correct reads through his progressions with athletic ability to back it up.

Still would like to get the UW transfer to bridge the gap and press hard for the 2019 QB class.

  18. Regarding the Collins article, what’s with all these “multiple sources” requesting anonymity because they are not authorized to divulge information? Department is leaky like a sieve or Banker defense. Yeah, you’re not allowed to say anything because of legal reasons, like HIPAA, for one…

  19. Listened to the JoeBeaver show to see if they would cover the Petras news. They hold off for the first hour before bringing it up. Dave calls around 1:01 and the shields come up!! Protect Riley at all cost!!
This decommit is no big deal…it’s just a kid changing his mind. happens all the time….we’ll be fine. Has nothing to do with Riley here. Iowa is the only other logical place a kid from California would want to go to as an option to Oregon State. Has nothing to do with the Iowa coaching staff knowing Riley’s tendencies first hand…….somebody kill me…..

  20. Here is my theory from a positive perspective on Petras:

Riley isn’t leading the charge, JS is leading the recruiting focus and he has a plan. JS will not only bring in Carta-Samuels, but also will flip Sirmon or Yankoff from UW even given the UW ties. JS knows the QB he wants and it isn’t Petras.

I’m not sure Riley has ever been the qb whisperer he has been assigned to be. Perhaps he can evaluate talent, but after Gilstrap passed, it is sort of questionable.

I want JS to take the lead and pick his guys, not lean on recruits that Nebraska has been chasing. I’d rather poach a few of Petersen’s OKG’s than Nebby’s hopefuls.

DE said that JS is one of the most competitive guys he ever coached. Let it show in recruiting, recruiting against big name programs and getting some of those guys that JS wants.

    • the kid was 6’5″ and pro style QB….I agree as I don’t think petras was the type of QB JS is looking for. Personally, the 6’5″ QB with a rocket arm and probably not very mobile is not a good fit for OSU…primary reason is you need great offensive line and great RBs to complement and OSU rarely gets those things at the same time….last time was canfield and Rodgers bros in 2009…I’d rather have a 6’1-2-3″ QB that is mobile and athletic.

      • Not the kind of QB he’s looking for? Is he going to run a system where he doesn’t want the quarterback to throw passes, score points and win games?

Smith might want a scramble when it’s there/extend the play type of QB but that’s more the system than it is the player.

If Smith replaces Petras with another, equally accurate but better scrambling 4 star quarterback before signing day then I’ll admit I was wrong. That’s not gonna happen. Smith just shit the bed, plain and simple.

        • The kid has never played a down of FBS football. Great #s for HS don’t always translate into success at the FBS level. Luton had some pretty impressive #s for JUCO too and he was nowhere close to being ready to play at the FBS level. That said, you missed my point…..in order for a pro style QB to be effective, you have to have a pretty good O-line and good RBs….OSU rarely is able to attract really quality offensive linemen along with good RBs….if the QBs not very mobile (Mannion ring any bells), then it’s going to be tough going. While SM had the career passing yardage mark for the P12, how many winning seasons did he lead OSU to?

I’d much rather see an up tempo and spread offense with speed and an athletic QB vs. a 6’5″ pro style QB that requires maximum protection and can’t run…..I’m not interested in the Riley-type QB or his offensive scheme.

          • That’s all the system and what the coaches tell the player they can or can’t do. Jake Browning ain’t exactly Marcus Mariota but the coaches tell him to roll out and extend the play if he has to, and any 20 year old D1 athlete can do it. Do you really think that Sean Mannion is physically incapable of running 5 yards to his right and throwing on the run? He didn’t do it because he was told by Mike Riley to take 14 steps backwards and stand flat footed then go standing fetal and take the sack. Because Mike Riley is an idiot.

You’re trying really hard to explain away Jonathan Riley’s obvious failure.

    • He wont flip Sirmon. And I see no indication that Yankoff intends to flip. I think Smith and Riley were happy with Petras as their QB. This is why you are now seeing us scrambling at the last minute to try and sign the kid from Boise. Also, if they didnt want Petras to stick around, it would have been known before today that he would be going elsewhere. We were caught with our big boy pants down

      • Lindgren said in the Beaver Banter podcast that they missed each other by a season but Lindgren was still around on campus to host some of Smith’s recruits. They’ve stayed in touch since and would talk often while both were in the Pac 12. He said their families vacationed together last summer and they discussed coaching together in the future. He seemed like a sharp guy in the podcast.

    • Not random at all.

Michalczik coached Offensive Line, Tight Ends, and Special Teams at OSU with DE from 1999-2001, when JS was the QB.

Lindgren played QB at Idaho from 2001-2003, where JS then became the QB coach in his first full-time gig, so he knows him from that coaching-tree and from competing against him the last 4 years at Washington (Lindgren has been OC at Colorado).

Most people seem higher on the Michalczik hire because Lindgren had kind of fallen out of favor with some of the CU fanbase because their offense took a dip this past season. To me, looking at it on film, that had a lot more to do with personnel up front than it did anything else.

They both really fit the “low ego, high output” archetype that JS is going for. Michalczik is a great OL coach, and one of those that has embraced his role as an assistant over a long career. Zona has struggled at times under Rich Rod, but their O-line played really well this season. He’s also a great recruiter.

Lindgren is a really smart, cerebral coach, a lot like JS (3 time conference all-academic and scholar award winner when he played at Idaho). That’s totally what we want at OSU and I can see him and JS getting the best “game manager” play out of the QB bodies that we are able to recruit/salvage while recovering from the GA dumpster-fire. He’s not known as the strongest recruiter, but I think it’s a fair trade-off for his strengths.

I really like both of those hires.

  21. I’m going to be in San Diego for an early Christmas with the family the next 3 days. If an alt admin wants to start a new thread tomorrow go for it. See you guys Monday.

  22. Wyoming potato bowl game: nice idea and puts people in the stands, assuming anyone buys the tickets. .

Fans who cannot attend the bowl game, but still want to support the Cowboys and a great cause can purchase tickets through UWyoming that will be donated to Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Southwest Idaho.

    • Isn’t Tanner Sanders dad, Scott the HC at Crescent Valley; and the reason there is a slim hope that Hufanga might consider the Beavs? Maybe Scott can push Wa’a our direction.

QUESTION: What is the feeling here regarding a new thread? Perhaps to focus on our love (today) for the Bronco’s and some discussion of WBB and MBB ?

  23. Makes me wonder too if Petras had asked JSmith if they were bringing in any other quarterbacks. And if JSmith was honest and said they may try to add a grad transfer or swing one of the UW or Colorado QB commits.

    • If its not Heyward I am gonna be really concerned. UO is a rare school that makes its assistants wait to move on (or at least announce they are moving on), I feel like if Smith hasn’t been waiting on Heyward it means Smith is having a difficult time getting someone to agree to take the job.

      • It’s not that they’re rare in that they do that. I think every school should do it. It’s a proper stick to the carrot of executive pay.

I understand wanting KHJ for DC because of his relationships. But does he have the chops to run a stout D, as opposed to the fluff he’s seen at his various stops?

I would rather concentrate our D along the front and go give Inoke the DC job. The man has been stellar for many years with his groups. Part of that is teh players he’s had, but he’s also helped to take great athletes and just make them great players and a great part of a successful D.

Maybe we’re looking at a situation where Co-DCs would really be a good call.
