Our only hope is the “Edwards Factor”, which is not unlike the Riley factor.

In reality, another Saturday spent rooting against the Ducks for Beav fans.

  1. How long has it been since the Beavs pulled a true upset? Almost got one against Stanford until Nall’s fumble. I’d like to see one before I die!

    • been a while but the good news is the rest of the games this season are all upset chances… the advantage of being the bottom dweller, every win is an upset.

    • The Big 12 and ACC play Friday games too.

As for the 3 pm thing, 2 games are in AZ who typically plays late, 3 others are ranked teams playing each other so it makes sense that TV would want them in prime time. The only game that might have made sense at noon was WSU vs Utah.

I am surprised Oregon vs Cal isn’t on a little earlier but berthing else makes sense.

  2. Is anyone here a member over at beaversedge? It seems like Mike Singer has an update about Addison Gumbs but has only shared it with their member message board.

  3. The Beavs should put up some points tonight, unfortunately not enough. My thinking is that we’ve seen all the wins this season….I guess that should be singular.

Pettibonehead says a “dry loss”, does that mean all the bars are closed?

  4. Blount has to recognize that blitz, it was not hidden at all. Hot route to the slot receiver would of been an easy first down and Blount is looking the opposite way. Just terrible

    • Tackle, guard and center blocking only the dt and d-end. Tackle should have had him. That’s on the center for not calling out the assignments or the tackle for not recognizing it.

        • Center made the wrong call, jefferson jumped to the center to pick up a possible middle blitz, and everyone did slant right, incorrectly. The tackle literally touched no one on that play, it should have been picked up. 6 rushers 6 blockers.

          • Fine

            The blitz was still obvious
The WR still ran a hot route
Blount has to see that blitz and hit that receiver

Even if it’s because the line made the wrong call, it’s still an easy 1st down with a QB that has any awareness at all

  5. I’m staring at our linebackers for the rest of the game. The fact that we get SMASHED on the ground game after game is their fault, and I want to see what exactly they’re doing.

That 40 yard TD run, our MLB ran outside of the tackle for some reason, and the RB just ran into the 5 gap. And then broke two crappy tackles.

  6. I’m not trying to be too positive here, but I think it’s clear Smith is better than GA.. Now you have to be incredibly better to just be average, so it’s to be determined.. But man…. Smith inherited about zero talent on the O-line or anywhere on defense.. The defense is shockingly bad.

    • Absolutely agree. WR and RB has talent, and that is about it. Nobody could succeed with that. I hope we are hammering the JC transfer scene; you could start on day 1!!!

  7. I would like to see a drive break down for Nevada, Arizona, and now Arizona State. Blount is responsible for leading probably just 2 touchdowns on 20 to 30 drives. The offense just has had zero momentum. Entire first half of Nevada (all Blount) ALL game against Arizona, and now this game.

  8. ASU is about to get over confident.. We keep trying this strategy week after week.. It hasn’t worked in a couple years but tonight’s the night

    • No, even this year…..UConn is giving up 7 yards per rush. The Beavs are shitty, but not on a historical level yet, although there is still plenty of season yet.

  9. It’s just embarrassing. The LBs are either completely out of position or get stuck on blocks. They are NEVER making plays, ever. There’s a reason Moore has to make so many tackles.

  10. Some of these players are falling down instead of meeting the ball carrier. They look like they are hoping to trip the guy. They look scared to play the game. If someone is too scared to play then they shouldn’t play. I can’t see a reason to be allowed back on the field if you don’t have any personal pride.

  11. Hamilcar Rasheed just missed a tackle behind the line that turned into a TD. Andrez Hughes Murray incorrectly read a pass option to allow the previous TD. These D-ends supposed to be are tibesars specialty, maybe he isn’t that good of a coach

    • Hopefully, he’s our best player. Didn’t seem in pain, so that’s a good sign.

Also, that was a pretty great play call on the flea flicker. And Blount threw a perfect ball.

  12. Instead of a turnover chainsaw we should just have a tackle chainsaw.. Anytime a player makes a solo tackle they get to go over to the sideline and rev the chainsaw up.. Should only have to gas it up once the season

  13. Sounds like the O play calling is pretty good. I like ike the ability to vary tempo and play quickly (just had a 7 yard run on third and short) strategically.

Maybe the RBs and WRs can play defense too…

  14. QBs can’t be touched.

The dude sprints off for 22 yards one play, then scrambles around in the backfield for 10 seconds, but if you hit him one second after he throws the ball, that’s a penalty. Just insane.

  15. I’m not saying I hope it happens… But if Wilkins gets his front teeth knocked out with one snap buttoned on his chin strap and chewing on his mouth guard sideways I *will* laugh.

  16. And Williams misses his man for a WIDE OPEN TD AGAIN. Just like last week.

Thank god he’s a senior. The fact that he’s a senior and I don’t remember him before this season says a lot.

  17. Liking the fact Jefferson got 20 carries and the coaching staff maintains balance instead of abandoning the run game and just airing it out.

It sounds like the team is not quitting on this game or the coaching staff…

Maybe Moore can spend 30 minutes a day with the WR coaches and WRs….learn how to catch.

  18. It’s weird, I know the stats say we’ve run like 20 times, passed like 15, but I honestly only remember like 2 passes.

Jefferson has been great but we have two stud young receivers, can we try getting them the ball?

  19. Great job by Blount there avoiding the rush after a terrible snap and keeping his head up.. Blount would be a decent QB if the line could block at all

    • Agreed. Particularly with Pierce/Jefferson to keep defenses honest and the balanced play calling from the O coordinator.

I would love it if Smith could pull another D1 transfer to provide quality competition and depth next year.

  20. I don’t understand the Blount hate. He’s not a game changing QB, but he’s a solid game manger. If he’s the backup next year that’s solid.

    • Agreed. Blount isn’t great but he’s a legit Pac12 QB.

Who is getting destroyed by his bad line like every 5th play, which severely limits the playbook, which severely limits our perception of his value.

Blount has, for the most part, not been the problem for this team.

    • I don’t know what a QB can do when there appeared to be no plan to pick up ASU’s blitz package. I kept waiting for three step drops and slants to the slots or quick hits to the tight ends.

  21. I like Smith going for it there.. If the D was better I would take the points but FGs aren’t going to get it done.. Blount had Timmy if he throw the ball low to the outside.. He was on the run though.. Tough play.

  22. Theyre celebrating the great defensive play by Chase Lucas on Hernandez to deny the TD, but he tackeled Hernandez before the ball arrived. Beavs robbed on that one

  23. And then they throw the fade to Harry, who stiff-arms the defender before almost making the catch. No call.

And then Benjamin runs it for 10 and the TD. Didn’t see the LBs on that one, but to be fair, neither did he.

  24. Did Smith hire the wrong D coordinator or is there really that much of a talent disparity between our O and D? The O can at least can compete at this level.

    • Before the season I was certain Tibs was the right guy and the D would keep the Beavs in several games this season. Not the first mistake I’ve made.

Time will tell, however. Injuries/depth cannot be ignored when evaluating Tibs performance.

      • I’m not sure if Tibesar is the right hire. I am certain of two things:

1: The secondary, that while not great last year, is now shit.

2: I’d tell Aydon that if he weighs an ounce over 340#, don’t bother to show up for camp in the spring.

  25. Our defense acts like they’re trying to be gentle with the opposing players. It’s just so strange. Nobody flys to the ball, nobody knocks anyone off their feet when they tackle. Is this part of the new heads-up tackling method they’re teaching kids these days? It looks like flag football!

  26. Reason to remain optimistic:

The defense is clearly the biggest problem and its clear the coaches understand this since 8 out of 11 commits are defenders. Clearly they need to get some JC talent in but its clear to me that they’ve identified the weakness and made a plan to fix it.

    Reason to be pessimistic:

The offensive line is probably the 2nd biggest hole and so far they have added nothing to that group.

  27. This D has the potential to be the worst in the not so illustrious history of Oregon State football.
That is not an easy achievement. “Beaver Damn.”

    • Did anyone catch that stat at the beginning of the telecast ….if I was understanding correctly, the D gives up 4 plus yards per play BEFORE the ball carrier is contacted! WTF? Amazingly, that was only 3rd worse in the nation, but that may have changed after last nights cluster!

  28. That was hard to watch. Our front seven is incapable of shedding a block and it’s rare that the tackler squares up on the runner. My kingdom for a Dwan Edwards, Scott Crichton, Inoke Brecterfield, Delawrance Grant… (I won’t even go into some of the past linebackers).

  29. The positive is that Jefferson on any other team would be a heismen candidate and we have some good receivers. Bad news is everything else.

    • At least I got to watch my Anaheim Ducks beat the LA Queens last night. I just wish Anaheim had a different animal chosen as a name / mascot.

  30. Sort of obscure, but it reminds me of some bad Iowa St teams in the 90’s that had a Heisman quality running back….Davis? He would rush for a ton of yards and they would get beat 49-24.

  31. Not super impressed with Rogers as RB. And it seems in the last couple games Jefferson would move the ball down to the goal line and then they’d pull his for Rogers. Don’t get that. Jefferson is definitely our best option so why pull him when we are right there? I think my other glimmer of hope is our offensive calling is good overall but I haven’t been impressed with our goal line calling.

  32. Brilliant strategy to get Leach aka Aunt Patty overconfident. Maybe he cancels a practice or two this week, lets them eat all the pizza they want at training table, cancels curfew. Plays right into our hands…. baw..ha..ha!!

  33. Is it just me or does recruiting seem much quieter this year?

Is it because they’ve already got 11 commits and don’t have a ton of space (only 15 seniors if my count is correct) so they are being very selective at this point?

Is it because they are changing their focus to JC guys which tend to get less press?

Is it because they are having a difficult time getting kids to commit?

The last commitment they got was in July. That just seems odd to me.

    • I really hope they have their sights on some JC/transfer defensive players, and maybe another QB.

I’m rapidly losing confidence in Bray as a linebackers coach. I won’t be surprised if Tibesar comes out with an “I’m going to be helping out more with the linebackers in practice” statement. Basically meaning that he’s taking over coaching them because Bray can’t get it done.

      • Personally unless a high quality QB (like Johnson Jr. having a change of heart for instance) comes available I’d rather not use a scholarship on a QB this year.

Assuming no one transfers they will still have 5 QBs on the roster next season including a solid backup in Blount (assuming Gebbia is PAC level which I think he is). I say let the other 3 battle for the #3 spot (betting Moore wins out). I’d even be fine with 1 of those 3 transferring (and could see Colletto going the FCS route). That said, I’d definitely seek a developmental walk on QB.

I think scholarships need to be used on defense and the offensive line at this point. I did count 13 returning offensive lineman so maybe they think they can get a quality group out of that with this year of development but I still think adding a couple more should happen.

Anyone know how many scholarships they have available for 2019?

        • Gebbia looks like the real deal on the film I saw…with Blount as #2 that’s solid improvement in the QB situation for 1 year. Still wouldn’t mind another guy. Willard and Colletto don’t look legit. Who is the 5th guy? Dukart left…

          • Nick Moore.

Not saying I wouldn’t want another guy but don’t see the need to use a scholarship on another back up level player at QB in 2019 given the numbers and youth of the group they already have. Too many needs at other spots.

          • I like Moore’s film. I think he was under recruiting because he’s relatively small (6′ 180 lbs) but he looks like he knows what he is doing.

Probably got lots of advice from Matt over the years, he seems like the type that would spend 2-3 years on the bench and then surprise everyone with a big senior year if he got the chance.

            http://www.hudl.com/profile/4144923/Nick-Moore

    • That’s a valid question. At this point I don’t see any kind of defensive adjustments making this team competitive. I’d say just ride JJ and let some of the other backs have some touches for game experience. If AP is 100% at the end of the season then let him get back in to the swing of things so JJ can get some rest. Dude’s on a historic pace already.

      • You’d definitely need to make sure Pierce is on board with the move.

And of course it also brings up the possibility that Pierce leaves after 2019 to go pro or as a grad transfer either way so maybe you just use him. I still think I’d gamble on getting that extra year out of him if he’s open to the idea.

Could be a 2 headed monster for a couple seasons with the right offensive strategy.

    • I like what he’s focused on there: things he and the team can control. Some of the media point to personnel deficiencies, which might help, but not this season. So often in replays last night you see beavs in position to make the tackle, but they hesitate and Benjamin jukes and burns them.

    • Ugh, the audio with that press conference made it sound like whoever was holding the Iphone was taking a dump the whole time and really laboring with it. Weird heavy breathing.

Didnt think Smith sounded checked out or anything like that. I think he’s just confused like we with how terrible his defense can be when it comes to making the play and actually tackling somebody.

Funny thing to me is this team really wouldn’t ne out of most of these games if the defense was just servicable. But since they’re so brutally terrible at forcing a punt, we’re left with lopsided scores.

Defense cam only get better next year with the return of some key injured players as well as some incoming transfers(Roberrts/Gumbs) and recruits. This year will be tough to watch, but I think we will see a more competitve team next season.
Maybe still barely a bubble bowl team, but at least a step in the right direction.

  34. I wandered into a bunch of YouTube rugby matches earlier tonight — most featuring the All Blacks from New Zealand. We used to live there and became rugby fans. Anyway, watching the running and tackling made me think that perhaps we need to recruit some 17 year old Kiwis who have been playing rugby since they were in the “under 9” sides and bloody well know how to tackle.

  35. Hi Mike….. Thanks so much for helping me get this great job. Living in Omaha is much better than Florida. How are things in Corvallis? Are you working your magic with the Beavers? Best…Scott.

PS: Where, exactly, is that fully stocked cupboard your left behind? I’ve looked everywhere. All I found was a case of Juicy Fruit.

  36. In reading the comments it really seems like people are bashing the secondary. I don’t know that they are amazing but to me they seem like they are the best unit on the defense (again not saying a ton). But given enough time any secondary will get shredded. I haven’t seen every minute of every game but the few sacks I have seen were clearly caused by the secondary not letting anyone get open. Sure there have been a lot of completions but that is what good QB’s do against even the best secondaries when they have time to throw especially against a secondary that will bite on almost any play action because of the fact that they are needed more often than not to make tackles after the D-Line misses tackles then the linebackers don’t even miss tackles cause they aren’t even capable of shedding blocks to get near the ball carrier. Jalen Moore seems solid to me, he has a good feel for the game, sure I wish his hands were better and he’d have a couple picks but the actually awareness of where the ball is is a trait that is often foreign with college safeties.

  37. It is just scary to me that our defense starts getting torched in the run game and there is seemingly no adjustments… the trickle of blood continues into full on bleeding out. I know we lack talent on defense but I’m really starting to questions the coaching on the defensive side of the ball.

    • To me it seems like the Beav D could at least sell out to Blitz (similar to ASU) — ASU is either second or leads the PAC in sacks. Sure ASU gives up a lot of yards through the air, but the ROI is increased sacks/fumbles, and third-long. This team has none of that.
