  1. I assume Lindsey got the green light he’ll be allowed to play next season?
Weird time to transfer so not sure how that plays out.

        • Possibly 5 even, if Jack’s interpretation of the rules is accurate. Jack mentioned yesterday he would have to sit 1 calendar year. Since he tramsferred after week 5(game 4 for Nebraska, which had a bye) he might have to miss 5 weeks next season, unless we also have an early bye on the schedule.

But none of this is official at this point. Brandon Kipper is already eligible this season due to a special waiver, so who knows.

“By playing in four games this season, Lindsey will be allowed to take a redshirt season and retain two years of eligibility after sitting out in 2019 at another school.“

From what I gather, he can’t play next season without a waiver.

The redshirt rule allows players to play in up to 4 games and still retain the ability to use that year as a redshirt season.

Players that redshirt for a season, and then choose to transfer to another FBS school, still have to sit out the the following year as a transfer. To my knowledge this new rule doesn’t change that.

It could be that because of OSU’s academic calendar being on quarters that he’ll be able to work around it and count on our roster as a delayed greyshirt and be eligible for at least part of next season, but I think doubtful without a waiver.

        • Not sure if we should trust the ESPNs or the Beaverblitzs/BeaverSedges of the world on this, or the NCAA official transfer guidelines.

          http://www.ncaa.org/student-athletes/current/transfer-terms

          Transfer Process
Academic year in residence: Under the basic transfer regulations, you must spend an academic year in residence at the school to which you are transferring. If you transfer from a four-year college to an NCAA school, you must complete one academic year in residence at the new school before you can play for or receive travel expenses from the new school, unless you qualify for a transfer exception or waiver. To satisfy an academic year in residence, you must be enrolled in and successfully complete a full-time program of studies for two-full semesters or three-full quarters. Summer school terms and part-time enrollment do not count toward fulfilling an academic year in residence.

Also, consider this. The last day to add fall term class(with approval by academic faculty) for Oregon State is tomorrow, Oct 7th.
          https://events.oregonstate.edu/event/last_day_to_add_a_fall_term_course_online_with_dept_approval?utm_campaign=widget&utm_medium=widget&utm_source=Oregon+State+University

So….conceivably, Lindsey could enroll for full time classes by this weekend, then complete the full year’s worth of classes, and qualify as having completed a full academic year by the beginning of Summer 2018. Am I misinterpreting this? Summer term doesn’t factor into a “full academic year”

If this is all true, he would need to get his transfer arranged quickly, but it could happen.

Also, consider special waivers do happen. Every website said Brandon Kipper would have to sit out this whole season, but he is playing today.

  2. So we landed Roberts (LB), Gumbs (DE), Gebbia (QB), and Lindsey (WR). All ranked 4-stars. We could be good sooner than later at this rate. Really would like to see more high end D talent.

So far this staff are better recruiters than any prior except maybe DE. Need more preps can’t just rely on transfers, though.

    • One thing I’m going to keep in mind is how they were noted to have been performing before they left.

Gebbia was seen as good. He narrowly lost out to a talented frosh who was a better fit for the system. He should be expected to be our starter for the foreseeable future.

Gumbs was solid and seen as a rising star who was primed to breakout. If he heals up well, which he should, I’d expect him to also be good upon his return.

Roberts and Lindsey were getting buried on the depth chart and seen as not playing to their potential. I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that some of that was being unhappy there and not liking the coaches. Maybe a change of scenery will be good for them. But I’m less sure that they will be quality players.

Roberts got some good reviews about his performance in practice as a member of the scout team so that is promising to hear. It’s evidence that the new situation will be good for him.

One thing to keep in mind is that 4 stars bust. All the stars really correlate to is a higher chance of being a good player than a lower star player. It’s by no means a guarantee.

      • Of course. No guarantee they’re good, but they have great offer sheets (more important than stars) and pedigree. I’d rather take a shot on those guys over guys nobody wants. It also builds momentum. As other recruits see us with four 4-stars they start to think something is building.

  3. Act 1 Scene 6. Beavs show a pulse for awhile. Then wilt under a barrage of explosion plays to absorb a 58-28 loss. Drizzly Reser empties in the forth quarter as students and fans seek other Saturday night options. Seen this one before.

PS: Please, please no turnover chainsaw once the conclusion is obvious.

  4. Customer kicked me down some box seats, we’ll be watching the beat down in luxury. But, if the beavs do happen to win, I’m sure it will be thanks to my attendance.

  5. Haha. Our D is just so historically bad.

At this point teams coming in ready to play Madden after seeing how bad we are on tape all week.

    • At this point I kind of want us to set the record. Could be funny to have another futility record and an interesting/difficult challenge when defending our program against Duck trolls.

  6. This is the worst defense in history.. I don’t care what the numbers say.. Perhaps at some point a D was statistically worse. But we’re the worst.. Don’t anyone try to take that away from me.. It’s all I have to cling too

  7. #15 doesn’t even TRY to pick the ball during the tip. I don’t know who the secondary coach is but he fucking sucks if this happens EVERY GAME.

    • I think he was so worried about trying to get there and make the tackle that he didn’t see the ball. It looked like he kind of ran in to the ball and then sort of flailed at it. It’s a bit too much for this defense to make a tackle and have ball awareness at the same time.

    • I don’t care about the size of any guy’s balls, but I do like that it shows he’s intelligent and knows our team’s strength/weakness and is going for the win. Too bad he played not to lose vs Nevada, though.

    • It’s also lack of speed, Wazzu throws a pass to the flat that wasn’t really all that fast in developing and the Beavs have zero players rallying to the ball when it should have been three or four players swarming at least before the five yard line.

  8. If we had even an average defense….

But we don’t, so we’re gonna play exciting half after exciting half, and lose by 14 in the end every time.

These commentators keep saying “They’re playing true freshman, they won’t miss those tackles next year…” I hope so, but my hope has been shaken over the last 10 years. Basically since Quizz left I don’t believe we’ll get better. But I hope we will.

  9. It’s incredulous how consistenly weak the pass rush is. Even the worst of defensive lines apply more pressure over the course of a game than the Beavs.

  10. Love Jefferson and want to be mad but we’re terrible and he will be good but he needs to learn from these multiple close call fumbles and the actual drive killing one.

    • Yeah, it sucks that our margin of error doesn’t allow us to win any game where we have a TO. Hope he learns from that, he definitely wasn’t carrying it tightly.

      • Not really a guy that cares for moral victories but I at least see some sort of potential down the line. But fuck the defense needs some transfers/recruits.

  11. So weird. Another wrong call not evem questioned. Wasnt a backwards pass by colletto. Maybe a backwards bounce, but pass wasnt backwards

    • As I said below, when was the last time Beavers didn’t have anyone leave or get fired on the coaching staff at any given time? If we are to give JS a chance at all, we need to believe in the whole staff, not just the offensive side because we knew the offensive side had weapons. Defensive side has always been a weak spot for the last 8-10 years. The talent on that side of the ball had slowly been declining with talent, but the offensive side has always seemed to be able to get RB and WR talent. We just need to get better OL recruits in the future to assure our success. Remember, Offense was ahead of the defense in the offseason. So it appears the true mark of whether the defense is good or not will lie in the offseason next year. If the offense and Defense are equally getting TD’s and Turnovers in spring practices, then we know we’ll be good for the season, if the defense slows the offense down and causes a ton of turnovers the following season, then we’ll know we’ll be Pac-12 contenders. This is the bench mark. We need a defense that is lean, tall, and fast like they were in 1999-2002. When Riley and Co. took over with Banker at DC, they went to bigger fatter lineman and we’ve been trending that way for a long time. LB’s don’t have elite closing speed either, so doesn’t matter how well they are coached if they can’t hit the line quickly enough to meet the RB; instead, the RB is meeting the LB’s.

      • We don’t need to believe in anything but hard numbers. Faith is laziness. It’s an abrogation of responsibility.

I think you’re trying to say we should have patience, because we’re not going to see a fully implemented scheme until:
        1. It clicks with the players
        2. Depth and experience improve

So… are the same players getting better at implementing the scheme?

Or are people making excuses for the same mistakes happening week in and out?

        • Fair point on “So… are the same players getting better at implementing the scheme?

Or are people making excuses for the same mistakes happening week in and out?”

the facts are that our run game has improved, but our pass protection hasn’t been very good the last 3-5 years. Is that due to lack of QB talent thanks to GA not playing the best QB, or is it that the pass protection scheme has changed from last 3 years to this year and the players aren’t understanding the new pass block scheme, but understand and can implement the run block scheme? On another note, we haven’t been penalized for illegal formations, ineligible receiver downfield, nor a ton of administrative penalties in general. Holding has become an issue the past few games, as well as illegal block in the backs. Which tells me this team is very disciplined especially with how much Wazzu was shifting on their defensive lines last game. The 3rd and 55 occurred out of frustration penalties after the initial penalty occurred.

  12. I 100% guarantee Bray wasn’t Tibesar’s choice. Why would he be? That was part of the Simple Jack good ol boy club and it was forced on him.

The shit Dbacks coach is another story. Turd. Bye.

  13. I’d say give Tibesar a mulligan for this garbage of a defense.

My guess is that many guys have been caught thinking about how to tackle correctly before it becomes muscle memory through repetition. He came in talking a really precise and clear approach to tackling and defense. As a result, he tried to implement it with a bunch of GAs guys who have had zero discipline for 3 years. They may be really trying, but it just isn’t there yet.

I think Aydon was the key for the last 2 years and he hasn’t been the beast that demands 2 guys to hold him off. He is an immobile body that running backs use as a pick to rub by as the cut through the line. Aydon doesn’t have the ability to shed a block and actually reach out to tackle a guy.

I wonder if JS begins viewing the defense as such a liability that he pushes for much more blitzing. A gambling aggressive defense at least has a chance for some turnovers, especially when you know you’ll be giving up 600 yds each game.

Jefferson is real good by the way.

  14. The only coach I’d like to see go is Bray. Nebby LBs were equally terrible. I’ve seen enough of him.
The other guys all get a year or two to get some talent in and work with it. Offense is where it needs to be to compete — can and will get better…but they can keep us in games today. Smith/Lindgren’s play calling is the best I’ve ever seen at OSU. Notice hardly any posts in 5 games about play calling? So refreshing.

    • Does Bray get a little bit of a pass, considering he’s been burning up the phone lines to bring us Roberts, Gumbs and Lindsey?

Maybe he’s been so distracted trying to set up next year’s roster that he hasn’t had enough time with his current roster.

      • I don’t think Bray gets a pass, he has to balance coaching and recruiting every year. And if he’s bringing a LB from Nebraska (?), results could be disappointing.

    • So where did the defense go off the rails? The 2016 D was noticeably improved and then it fell apart again in 2017. What talent left that was not replaced, the secondary guys (DeCoud, Nelson)?

    • The offense is not amazing, and there will be bad calls or weekends — but it feels as if the play calling purposefully is placing the players into good opportunities.

I also like the variety & more consistent use of tempo.

Its going go be shoot outs though…

      • actually the offense is amazing especially given the qb situation. Two average qbs at best and the beavs are unrecognizable from last year’s offensive production. Connor Blount is a freaking warrior. That kid had taken so many shots repeatedly and picked himself up time and time again. His deep pass to TH last night was amazing and I thought he played very well until his injury. I suspect he is done for the season with what appeared to be a separated shoulder. Now we need Luton back to pick things up. Heck, even JC looked pretty good for the short time he was in the game. This offense is fun to watch and will get even better with a really good QB.

        • Connor Blount is a freaking warrior.
Absolutely! Did y’all see his quote recently when asked about getting sacked/hit? He said something to the effect of………”Doesn’t bother me, I signed on to get hit”. Actually, I think he may have said “we sign on…”.

If he is out for the rest of the season we may see how much having a guy with his attitude at QB has kept the O fighting despite the situations they’ve been in this season. Niner is a fine motivator but I think he needs a guy like Blount on the field. Not sure Luton has that chemistry.

        • It’s fun to watch, yes. Yes, with a good QB it can get better — but what offense doesn’t?

My point being is perhaps we should be comparing it to what other successful offenses are doing, as supposed to just what we had going on the last few seasons?

When it’s consistently (ie more than one season) in the top half of the Pac-12 statistically, I might call it amazing.

      • GA tried to play with tempo but the offense just ended up looking rushed and not in sync. This year when they play with tempo everyone appears ready and on the same page. That part seems much improved to me.

    • Disagree on Bray. He had 2 different DC’s at NE one being Banker, the other Diaco. Tibesar seems to be the one in control and was a LB coach at Wisconsin. So he will know whether Bray is the issue or if it’s the talent/depth at LB position that is the issue. I remember hearing about Mitch Meuwson coaching for a time at my HS alma mater in Forest Grove, and heard he wasn’t very good at relaying information and coaching the players back in 2006-2007. He became a UPS driver. So it’s possible Bray has the same issue. He was able to play the game, but not able to relay the needed information to actually coach the players on how to play the position. We need to trust Tibesar and Co. on defense for the next 2 years to add needed depth before we look to get new coaches anywhere. When was the last time we had a full coaching staff stay on staff for more than 2 seasons before an assistant bailed?

  15. Our defensive history over the last 15 years is fascinating.

On the D Line, you go from Swancutt-Victor Butler-Paea, to…nothing
LB, you go from Siegler-Barnett-Kristic-Doctor-Robinson to…nothing
DBs, you go from Weathersby-Sabby-Afalava-Poyer-Nelson to…nothing

The only bright spot on defense all year has been Hodgins. Our linebackers run straight into blocks(if they’re anywhere near the play in the first place) and dive at tackles. Our DBs try to cover but are mediocre at best, and NOBODY can intercept a pass. And the line struggles to win the 1v1 and get pressure.

Really when you look at offensive talent, the O Line is ok, RB is great, WR is great, and QB is mediocre. But on defense, that cupboard seems to be either completely barren, or too young to contribute, hard to say which. But it’s super bad.

      • What happened to Isaac Garcia? Remember how pumped we were that a USC recruit was coming to OSU and that he could be a difference maker? Obviously, the Beavs need David Morris back, but is it possible that a red shirt is forthcoming?

    • really, the defense is super bad? Who knew? The defense was bad last year two and we lost a few of our best defenders in the off season. I’m not sure what most of you all expected but it’s about what I thought it would be. You have to be more realistic at this point given the circumstances. Last year was a dumpster fire and it’s been that way since 2015. It’s going to take at least two more years before this team starts winning games. Anyone that thinks otherwise hasn’t been watching OSU football since 2015. It took Colorado and WSU with their newcstaff

      • 4-5 years to see great results but now look where they are. It sucks that we have to wait 2-3 more years to see similar results but that’s just the reality. And, there’s no guarantees we will get there either but at least we’re a pretty good offense team and the O is a lot more difficult to fix than the defense. We have lots of talent and decent experience on offense but little to none on defense. The most talent on defense is injured at the moment. I think 2020 will be a much improved team that could go to a bowl game. Patience, patience patience.

  16. We’re going to keep getting pistol whipped this season but hopefully these fluke flake transfer kids and some new recruits work out. Weird so many/all(?) from Nebraska. This staff of coaches seems better and is Riley still a part of the staff or not? He was then left then came back or something? He’s weird.

Besides just playing better I think the beavers need better lineman on both sides of the ball to really be competitive. Linebackers haven’t been very good. QB is kind of a mess this year too.

    • I’m not going to get overly excited about these Nebraska transfers until they make it on to the field and actually perform. They are Riley recruits after all.

  17. Seems like our only hope for a win will be homecoming vs Cal on the 20th.
Saw lots of Cal fans bitching about Beauner yesterday, wishing Oregon State had hired him as head coach last year.

    • Hadn’t thought about the coaching search…seems as though JS v BB we came out ahead. Gotta give Sherm a thumbs up on that pick.

      • I still have no idea why Beauner was considered a viable D1 HC candidate. If he was one of the “choices,” then it was a pretty pathetic list just because he was on it.

  18. Oregon State needs to move the Cal Poly game to week 0 next year. That or add another low level opponent that week and take advantage of the ability to play 13 games for traveling to Hawaii.

It is a terrible choice to open up against a P5 school with big changes likely and coming off (likely) back to back double digit loss seasons.

      • More than playing Oklahoma State to open the season?

But that is okay, leave Cal Poly where they are and add a 2nd FCS opponent or at least a low level FBS opponent. There has to be some MAC/Sunbelt team with a whole in their 2019 schedule still.

          • Never heard anything one way or the other, but I would guess no, since it hasnt shown up anywhere still.
There were 3 JUCO DTs I was watching and I thougjt at least 1 would make the trip. Who knows, maybe the Cal game will have one or more.

        • Every team worries me, but losing to a Cal Poly would be a terrible way to start a season, and I feel like Cal Poly is one of those FCS teams that often comes close to beating an unprepared FBS team in week 1. Seen them take Graham’s ASU teams down to the wire a couple if times.
But yeah, we can lose to anybody

          • Fair enough, still think finding a week 0 opponent is preferable to opening with Oklahoma State

(I also personally think that you should take advantage of the Hawaii rule and play 13 games)

          • Cal Poly had Wisconsin beat a few years back, but if I remember correctly their kicker missed a PAT. They used run an option somewhat like Air Force, not sure if that’s the offense now.

  19. Redshirting both Morris and Reichner is a real possibility since we are halfway through the season. I personally like the idea.

    • I was at the game last night. Felt like he gave up his outside to easily. Of course did not watch him every play. The run game was solid so he is playing a part in that.

      • Ya he’s the most experienced lineman and lt who should be the best pass blocker on the team. I gave him a pass at Ohio State but it seems he isn’t where he should be by now. Overall our pass protection is terrible.

        • His arm went stuff straight out after the hit. Team doctors from Seattle came to his aid before the whistle blew. Didn’t look good. Did walk off under own power. Not sure how it was it wasn’t a flag for helmet to helmet.

        • @Youngorst I don’t think that’s the rule anymore:

The rule, ratified by owners in May, makes it a 15-yard penalty for a player to lower his head and use his helmet to deliver a hit on an opponent. A player is subject to a possible ejection, reviewable by replay, and to a potential fine or suspension by the league for an egregious violation.Aug 22, 2018

Many news outlets were asking the same question why it wasn’t called as well. The defensive player led with his head and hit Cooks in the head. Guess you are right though since it wasn’t called.

  20. Beavs may be picking up the last MBB verbal commit of their 2019 class this week. Orlando Robinson is going to announce his choice in the next few days.
If they land him, I wouldn’t be surprised if Tres gets converted to a walk on for his senior season. Just something to keep an eye in this week.

  21. Haven’t tracked what other FR have done so far, but isn’t Jefferson on pace to be a viable candidate for Pac 12 Freshman Offensive Player of the Year? The losing record won’t help him obviously, but his pace should put him up there.

    • So close…

They look professional. But then they look a lot like the Bears’ unis.

Agreed on the white. A single orange stripe on the shoulders and the helmets we had when 9 first started, only with Benny on the back instead of the poop smear… and orange numbers on the forehead.

These are better than anything we’ve had in a long long time.

  22. My favorite quote from JS from WSU game
“We were feeling like field goals weren’t going to win,” Smith said. “So, we went for it a bunch on fourth down.”
That right there is Anti-Riley…..gotta love it!!!

    • For Riley, it would have been “We were feeling like a field goal could win it for us, so on 3rd and long, lost 5 yards on a false start, then completed a passing play behind the line of scrimmage to lose another 5 yards, which pushed us out of field goal range, so we punted it……backwards.

      • Then again, I don’t believe “Riles” ever had a 3rd and 55. One of the commentators said that 55 yards was the longest 3rd down he had ever seen!!! LOL

  23. Frosty the Cornman lost a couple more decent players, including the former starting RB. I really wish he would run off a couple DT’s for us.

    • The starting RB who committed in June 2018, and was gone a few months later.
I’m sure Frost will find a way to blame it on Riley

    • Greg Bell first tweeted this morning his letter from Nebraska regarding his release, with a list of schools he wasn’t allowed to transfer to.

Then, an hour or so later, he tweets a new letter from Nebraska, which now includes Oregon State as a school he can’t transfer to. Funny, because of all guys leaving Nebraska, Bell had the least connection to our coaching staff. Why not block Lindsey/Roberts/Gebbia?

Just seems petty on Frost’s part that he would have the school recall the first letter and have Oregon State added later to the list.

      • From a co-worker here who follows Husker football like any real Nebraska Native, he said that Greg Bell was recruited and brought in by Scott Frost from a JC school in Arizona. So it looks like he wanted to make a statement to current and incoming recruits that want to leave in the middle of a season after losing a starting role. Ozigbo beat Greg Bell out for the starting job for the Purdue game and Greg Bell apparently didn’t like that Frost wasn’t loyal to him, and now Frost isn’t happy that Bell didn’t honor his commitment to the team nor himself. I could understand blocking him from going to other B1G schools, but a Pac-12 school that’s at the bottom? really?

          • I think it’s pretty standard for schools to block future opponents, or schools where a prior head coach moved on to, and that was all viewed as justifiable by most people(still lame)
But this one seems to be for no other reason than Frost is a dick and doesnt like everybody laughing about how many guys he is losing. Bell has no prior connection to OSU

          • It was originally future opponents and B1G schools. So we must have a double secret agreement to play Nebraska………….or Frosty the Cornman is a petty dick?

          • Also interesting that they back-dated the letter to Oct 5th. If they added Oregon State to the revised letter today, shouldn’t it say Oct. 8th?
Anyway, Frost is a cold little prick

          • Notre Dame had Oregon State on their list of schools kids can’t transfer to a few years ago. I can only imagine it because of the as whipping we gave them in the Fiesta bowl.

  24. Leach thinks Jefferson is the best RB in the Pac-12. He said our offense is putting something together that could be scary in the near future. What is scary is our defense. Let’s hope that Smith isn’t so offense he doesn’t forget to load our defense too. It seems to me you’d want to start priority of recruiting from the lineman on both sides of the ball outwards. Where’s the beef? I know getting that star QB is like a treasure hunt and it is fun and all but with good coaching on an okay QB behind a strong line you will do just fine. Blount looked even better against WSU this week… he stepped up more in the pocket and threw the deep ball… coaching is working there. If he wasn’t running for his life once in a while he’d look even better. Deep thoughts by BeaverBill.

    • It was impressive to see the improvement in Blount’s decision-making. JS and BL accomplished more in one week of QB coaching than anyone did during the GA era.

    • I’m sure after serving as OC at UW and playing their D in practice he appreciates the value of defense. They had impact players at D line, linebacker, and secondary.

He’s just had more to work with on the offensive side of the ball. The injuries and transfers didn’t help the D line depth or the secondary. Aydon beaching himself on Reser turf sidelines didn’t help an already thin D line.

Leach spoke highly of Nall too. The fact he calls attention to OSU’s emerging offense is noteworthy.

As Angry pointed out, the play calling has been great for the first time in years….coach’s scheming well, taking advantage of player strengths, plays are executed consistently; they’re running the ball, and not giving up on the run, and not just running to set up play action on 3rd and 20…..Pierce and Jefferson are scoring weapons.

The D will come around in 2 years…hoping OSU can recruit lineman on both sides of the ball, and avoid injuries until they can build some depth. Transfers obviously aren’t the long term answer, but they can be that shot in the arm to competitiveness and attracting recruits. Oh, and a kicker too Great Beaver in the Sky…

  25. After watching film on the committed recruits these are the players I could see starting as a true freshman next year and the exact style I love that we’re recruiting:

Evan Bennett 3* DT is a beast! He plays with toughness and doesn’t assume his teammates have made the tackle if he sees a player trying to wrap up the ball carrier. He also was able to jump on a fumble before anybody even realized there was a fumble. He plays fast and it’s obvious on film.

Ryan Franke 2* DE Plays a little high, but mostly because of height. Is quick off the ball and can shed a double team/help or chip block and can fend off the hands of the offensive guys. not sure what the competition is in Oaks Christian HS league in CA. He adds muscle and he’ll be really strong in 2020. Not a project by any means because he’s 6’4″ 216 lbs. That’s a good lean starting frame. He’s not as strong or big as Evan, but he has good footwork.

Michael Erhart 2* LB Is fast enough in his league to be a kick returner, but not at the collegiate level. He’s placed all over the field in regards to his position with his current HS. He’s seen as an extra down lineman, seen as a safety, seen as a true LB, and also seen as a Free Safety. A lot of his tackles are made 5+yards past the OLS vs at the LS. Not an issue, just a matter of where he’s being placed on the field. Has good footwork to where he can change directions quickly and makes good angles and has decent closing speed. Again, not sure of the competition is West Hills, CA and the league of Chaminade.

Omar Sprieghts 4* DE Can we get 3-5 more of him please? I didn’t even watch all his film and know he will be a starter next year. He will need to bulk up just a bit more in the off season, but the dude is fast! I am excited and happy we are getting him playing for the Beavs!

Corey Stover 3* DE could play TE if needed, but is fast enough to play DE. If our TE depth becomes an issue, or we need to have a 4th or 5th string option, i could see Corey Stover going to the offensive side of the ball on field goal blocking or punt coverages and do fakes throwing to him at some point. @ 6’7″ 225, he needs to add some muscle and he’ll be a weapon on offense or defense. Good get

Kelsen Hennessy 3* DE Cal was his only other offer, but he committed almost a year ago. His film shows he’s got speed, but appears he can contain the ends and can shave off cut blocks as well. He’ll need time to develop, but hope he can play in a few of the earlier games to allow depth for 4 games next season.

    • Oaks and West Hills / Chaminade are both in top leagues out here.. Both in the valley so you get a little more variation of schemes (nothing too gimmicky)but still a lot of solid P5 talent getting pumped out of those leagues every year.

      • Thanks for the info. I was just going off of what I saw on film in their highlight reels. I like the height and speed being recruited by this staff. I don’t see projects in any of the recruits thus far. They all need some fine tuning of fundamentals and all have high motors; which is great to see compared to past recruits.

  26. Nick Daschel of the big O says that Blount’s shoulder injury is “not serious.”

Coach Niner is reported to have said that Blount will be monitored during the bye week and leading up to the Cal game, but that Blount’s injury is not “long term.”

Hard to believe that since it looked like he was in a ton of pain when it happened. I’m thinking maybe some sort of dislocation or separation of the shoulder? Any other armchair doctors have ideas?

    • This armchair doctor had a partial shoulder separation and broken collarbone sustained during a car wreck. My shoulder hurt just as bad as my collarbone, until it popped back in when the Dr yanked, twisted and pushed on it. That part about killed me. Afterwards it was sore but nothing too bad. Obviously I couldn’t use it because of my collarbone so I don’t know how bad it would have been to use..

  27. No specific info to share, but I think Trevon Clark will end up decommitting from OSU now that we have Tyjon Lindsey transferring here. Part of the reason why Fresno State offered him this week.

  28. Also,on the Juco DT recruiting front, Beavs will be down in Arizona to watch a game between Pima CC and Mesa CC, to see DT Bramdon Maddox this weekend.

  29. OT – Anyone been to or frequent Block 15? I have enjoyed a few of their beers, but never been there. Food prices look reasonable.

    • Block 15 is amazing. The burgers are amazing, the beer is amazing, the fries are amazing (just $0.25 extra for great sea salt and rosemary fries), and a great atmosphere to just catch up with friends.

It’s the place I miss most from my university days for sure!

      • There is nothing amazing about block 15 or any eatery, brewpub etc in Corvallis. You should try getting out more.

        • Agreed on the brewpub aspect. Block 15 is just another one with standard pub fare. But they do it well with their own little twists.

Murphy’s was the place to go for burgers. I don’t really know where to go now. Squirrel’s is a good standard burger. And there are a lot of good and great restaurants littered around the town if you know where they are. Most of them just don’t feature beer as the reason to go there.

        • I don’t know that Block 15’s food is that special but their beer is pretty first rate IMO. I put it up there with Ft. George, Boneyard and a few Portland breweries.

          • Your memories of a good atmosphere with good food and grub obviously cloud your judgement. Block 15 beer is shit. The food isn’t much better.

As someone who has lived in this area for over 30 years but has gotten out away from here? I stand by what I said. Block 15 sucks.

Thanks for making me agree with Jack.

  30. Well, half way through the season, I’m not really optimistic about winning another game this year but I am optimistic that this could be a quicker rebuild than I thought.

Year 3 is what I see as the turnaround year now vs maybe year 4 before. If Gebbia works out he’ll be a junior starter with hopefully some capable backups. Most of the defense should be new at that point.

I’m pretty much giving a pass to the defensive coaches for now due to the lack of talent and injuries. I wouldn’t mind seeing a staff change here or there next year. DL coach seems like a good candidate to go.

      • I love my island homies more than most.. but this obsession with “poly” players has to stop is there some talent on the islands?? Yes for sure but it’s not more abundant than In even a state like Arizona or Washington let alone Cali Texas Florida.. at the end of the day players are players

        • Yes but Polynesian’s are naturally big and strong and seeing how the beavs struggle on their lines I wouldn’t want to lose out on them. Not to say they would necessarily but it definitely helps having Polynesian on staff.

          • I’d say that polys on o-line and d-line are generally a gamble. They tend to not be aggressive enough to match what they face in pac12 athletcism. Polys at lb, safety are usually better bets. For each Paea you get a dozen Aydons who lack something but it is hard to figure out. A Jeremy Perry comes along but then you get multiple frustrating guys who have size/agility but lack aggressiveness for making a difference.

  31. Hoping for a slow work day tomorrow so I can follow the news regarding this FBI trial. Tomorrow is the day the defense teams for 3 different defendents get to cross examine the dad of Brian Bowen(player who got paid 150k by Adidas to play for Louisville)
It sounds like tomorrow will be the day that the defense team really tries to get as much dirt out in the open as possible, to help paint the picture of widespread corruption in basketball recruiting. Shouldn’t be too hard to do, since some of this news is already out in the open. Oregon fans should be cringing upon any questioning regarding Nike and Bowen, since their alleged offer is a big piece of evidence the defense team wants to have out in the open.

The trial is closed to any cell phones or other methods of direct reporting, so reporters have to wait until recess before they can all go out in the hallway and unload everything they learned. It will come from several reporters all at once in a couple of different waves throughout the day, with the first coming around 10 or 11 our time.
I really shouldnt be this interested in this stuff, but I’m pretty stoked for tomorrow

    • So far, Mr Bowen remembers and affirms pretty much every specific payment received he has been asked about, but when asked about Oregon Asst Coach Stubblefield paying him $8k, he goes back to the “I don’t recall” answer. When asked again if he recieved payment from Stubblefield, he says “I just don’t recall that”.

Lots if time to go, but it’s becoming obvious the oregon questions are getting the same response every time.

        • I believe this is completely separate from the “astronomical” offer mentioned the other day by the defense team.

In a pre-trial statement to the FBI, Bowen Sr. told the FBI he received a $3k payment from oregon asst coach Stubblefield while at oregon on an unofficial visit. Now in court, Bowen can’t recall saying that to the FBI previously, even though he was shown his written statement.

The unofficial visit was already sketchy in the first place, because the family made the visit, on their own dime, just days before getting the big payday to sign with Louisville.
Would make sense if the $3k was an under the table payment to help cover travel costs. But, also could be that he lied to the FBI originally about any involvement from oregon and theyre totally clean. But, the name Stubblefield and the $3k amount are in this trial because Bowen had previously said that heppened.

More to come throughout the day…

          • I don’t know abut tampering. I guess we have to see who signs him at the pro level to see who could possibly be offering him a payday in the future.

But it’s pretty well known in NCAA hoops that Stubbs is as dirty as the day is long. Remember last year when Altman made it a point to say he wasn’t there during another visit which did result in a commitment.

They knew someone was sniffing around, but they were so brazen that they didn’t bother rolling it up for even a while.

  32. Way ot, but are there any internet tv providers who have PAC12 Network for the Portland, OR market? Getting ready to drop DirecTV and I really don’t want Comcast.

  33. EXHIBITION BASEBALL:
Finally! Details on the game this Saturday now appear on the Baseball Twitter account.
11am start. Free admission, no concession stands will be open. Due to construction, no seating down the first base line.
    GO BEAVS!

  34. Amy of Blitz just tweeted:

“I talked with Conor today and first off, he’s upbeat. He said he was feeling great. The goal is for him to play vs Cal. He looked fine.”

    • Yay?

Good on him for plugging along. But his arm’s not gonna get any better. I’m surprised we didn’t have about three pick-sixes against Wazzu.

  35. That’s good to hear. I don’t see the point in playing Luton anymore even if he could physically. He’s a Senior on the way to graduation, and Blount is a Sophomore who can learn CJS’ system and contribute for the next 2 years if the NU kid sucks. The Beavs aren’t going bowling this year and Luton has never thrown the long ball accurately so what’s the point? Some idiot O reporter will talk about how great Luton’s deep ball is. Unfortunetly, that has never happened in a game, but these lazy ass reporters continue to ignore the fact he has more ints than TD’S and is wildly inaccurate with throws over 25+.
