Have at it.
My big picture takeaway from yesterday was simply getting the albatross of a 22 game/4 year losing streak off our necks. With that in the rear view, this team can now breath a bit and focus 100% on improving. Seems it would be impossible for a team to focus fully with that lingering every road game. It’s huge. Any recruits who are on the fence might take a second look seeing that improvement and some of the incoming talent, too. It’s early, but this staff seems to know what they are doing more than any since D.E.
Regarding Luton: it seems every year people here want to argue with me about quarterbacks. We haven’t had a good one in a long time. Luton is not good. He’s a 3rd string Pac-12; maybe a 2nd stringer on a bad team. The Beavs should have someone ahead of him. Sure, he has a good arm, so he’ll have some good games. Let’s see what he does vs USC. My feeling is teams like that will have a field day with him. Expect sacks, INTs, etc. Colorado has been in free fall on both sides of the ball since their hot start, so that game doesn’t change my feeling on Luton. If he beats USC, that opinion might change.
I don’t think we have the horses on defense to play with USC, but I’m very curious to see if the win built confidence and we hang.
Go Beavs
Feels good to be first for the first and likely only time ever.
That’s what he said.
I think Luton is decent but I would like him as a backup. No matter how you cut it throwing for 310yds and 3tds in a half is pretty good even if it’s Colorado. Hopefully the time off has allowed him to see some things and gain a new perspective.
Beavs don’t have a 4 quarter QB, meaning none can play 4 quarters with any consistency. They can be good in spurts. The thought that you stick with one guy is no good this year. Coaches need to have a quick hook going forward.
I feel Blount is the starter when he’s healthy but Luton should come in if going isn’t moving the ball. Colletto shouldn’t be in except for those goal line packages.
Sounds right.
Coaches should have a rule like if the offense punts two or three times in a row, new QB.
It’s clear that Willard will only see the field in a complete emergency.
I agree, it’s hard to imagine Luton going all of the remaining 16 quarters this season. The difference between him and Colleto was particularly noticeable in the number of sacks taken and qb hurries; is Luton just enough faster at decision making to cause that? I don’t think the O-line was that much better in the second half.
Blount is an absolute fighter, and serviceable especially if AP and JJ can be counted upon.
Colleto is tough too, and made a nice cut on that last TD.
All that said, I’ll buy your summarizing paragraph, however, Smith may not have the luxury of confining Colleto to only goal line situations.
GO BEAVS!
Another note about Luton, he’s played well when there’s no pressure. Team is down by a bunch, he can play loose.
And maybe just use Colletto as a wildcat qb.
The QBs do take a lot of sacks. There are times when I feel like they could throw the ball away but they don’t. Wonder if that’s a feel thing or if the coaches are telling them to take the sack in order to protect the ball.
Another note about Luton, he’s played well when there’s no pressure. Team is down by a bunch, he can play loose.
Exactly.
And coming in relief of a QB who’s not performing well takes all the pressure off. When he starts and is “the guy” he’s been much worse. It doesn’t really matter. We just have to get through a few more games of him and then he’s gone, so it’s not worth wasting energy on this player.
Name me one QB in the last five years who has done well when there was an actually good opponent in front of him.

Vaz was six years ago.
Off topic, but I’m building a guitar, and don’t want to use poly or nitro finish. Anyone have experience with Shellac? Trying to figure out how long to let it dry between each coat (1lb cut). I’m applying it very thin. Not getting much of a gloss at all, so I was going to apply until I do. Is it possible to get a gloss without French Polishing? Noticing some bumps in the shellac on certain spots. They seem difficult to sand down without going through the finish itself.
I finished some drift boat oars with spar varnish. Waited a full 24hrs between coats then sanded and used a tack cloth. Four coats gave a very nice, deep and glossy finish.
Use blood like they did for the Red Violin.
Does French Polishing involve the tongue?
LOL
If you want a shellac finish, french is how you do it. It’s not hard. And the whole process isn’t necessary to get the finish you want.
I use sealcoat to set the wood, almost as a rule these days. I suggest sealcoat if the wood isn’t hard and dense. If you feel confident enough about your sanded finish, you can just apply layers of shellac at a pace of one per hour. They meld together, so dust is your only worry. just use some micromesh to knock it down between apps. After about three or four apps, sand with 320 and let it cure overnight.
You can probably find plenty of good tutorials on how to finish with shellac, so I won’t bother with that, other than to say it isn’t hard. You just get a feel for it after about five minutes of practice. You can use oil or not. I suggest not, because I’m already cheating on the base layers by spraying it all. I want to feel the friction imbalance between alcohol and shellac.
The more layers worked, the lesser shellac is used. Think of an alcohol rag as your final polish. You can micromesh the hell out of shellac, and it will never finish as well as a little spirit rub.
If you want to skip the elbow grease, just use some white polish for your finish.
I don’t want to learn French Polishing.
So far I put on a dozen thin coats (1lb cut). It’s getting shiny. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to stop once it’s shiny or keep going. What’s the best way to even out some of the bumps, too? I sanded gently between coasts but there are still areas of build up. Do you just sand those down or use alcohol to knock them off?
It’s an electric guitar so it might take some abuse. Do you think a coat of poly over it? I’ve never used wipe on poly and read some bad reviews.
Just use a alcohol and a cotton swab to melt the bumps. Just be careful not to melt through the finish, because alcohol will raise the grain. You can go so far as to dimple it, sand it and pay a little extra attention to the next layer.
Are you filtering your shellac? It sounds like you’re applying straight from the bottle. You’re always going to have particulates in suspension unless you use a paint filter. And if you don’t age the shellac for a week, then decant it (when I filter). You’re going to end up with wax in the solution, even if the label says dewaxed.
When you get it to the point 1200 won’t give you a shine, but you’re satisfied with the feel, just hit it with some white polish.
Thanks.
I’m mixing it from flakes with grain alcohol (found some generic everclear for fairly cheap). It’s pure and fresh. It’s pretty shinny right now so just trying to figure out the final step to knock the unevenness out. Sandpaper seems to be leaving very noticeable scratches, and alcohol when I tried it went down to the wood (I had to repair that, but doing so took out some dye from that area, so it’s lighter now, which sucks). The shellac was easy up until the final step of rubbing it out. This part isn’t working so well.
Did you dye it or stain it? Dye should be deep enough that you can still sand it to a raw finish without losing color. Stain will lift off. And is what you used oil or water based? If oil, you need to let it cure before applying shellac, or it will clot. If that’s your issue, let it sit for about a week at room temperature (or above if you have a space for that). Let the oil go ahead and clot out. Rub it out again, and repeat that process after about three days.
The nice thing is that you can just take some steel wool and alcohol and clean it off if you’re not satisfied with the finish. Some of my best finishes are of this variety, probably because I spent so much friggin’ time on them.
My process now is to get to a sanded finish with 320 sandpaper, Sealcoat it (with the gun) three or four times, knock it down with 400 then 600 micromesh, cure overnight, clean off any oil or dust left over from the previous wet rub, coat it another four times with essentially the 1# shellac (I mix to 3# then cut it to almost 1# when charging a pad, then cutting it further while dabbing. So I end up dabbing in what used to be the alcohol pot at the end.
I like a satin finish, so I rub it out with 1200 MM or superfine steel wool and pumice. But you can polish it beyond that.
You can also try a buffer, but you’ll need a variable rotary device so you can cut the speed to about 25%, or you’ll just burn the finish off.
I’m using the “brown walnut” Transfast Dye Powder. It’s water based dye, but can also be dissolved in alcohol, and I think that might be the issue. I’m seeing color on my shellac pad when I run across the bald spot I’m trying to repair, so I think the alcohol is lifting the color in this one spot where I let the alcohol accidentally eat through the finish. I put some shellac on the spot last night and let it sit overnight. My understanding is these layers should all blend, but in this “bald spot”, that’s just not happening. It’s still tacky, which is weird, because it’s only a 1lb cut. Maybe I applied the second layer too fast? I’m just going to let it sit a few days this time.
If it’s tacky, that means it was applied too thick or too soon. Remember that you have a bunch of layers surrounding your patch area. so you have to catch up by concentrating on that area for a six or so app process, sanding down the collar on each pass.
This is why cleaning it off to the sanded finish is sometimes preferable, depending on the size of the job. You’ll eventually do one anyway. You’ll also notice your sanded finish will be better the second time around, because there’s no way you’re getting everything off without sanding deep enough to change the dimensions.
Thanks, man.
Should I just let it dry for several days? I think the issue is I wanted to patch that bald spot and put it on too quickly before the prior layer was totally dry. It just built up and got tacky. Will it ever dry, or will the layers under never fully cure? If it will dry I will just wait and sand it back, then keep building up layers to match the thickness of the rest.
It’s going to take forever to cure as is. What happened is you trapped alcohol underneath a top layer which is in contact with the air. So that layer becomes almost impermiable. If you take your pad and rub the spot with alcohol as if you’re doing a topcoat, you should be able to take off that top skin and see if you get back to the depth necessary to cure properly. If it’s not dry to the touch after an hour or so, just do it again.
Be sure to drag a couple inches on either side of the patch, so you can build that whole area back up evenly.
Damn. That’s what I feared. Thanks, man.
Jack, any opinion on using “wipe on” poly over the shellac? Shellac doesn’t have a reputation for durability (though, many say it’s just as strong as lacquer, which is the traditional finish for electric guitars these days). I’ve read mixed reviews on the poly. Seems it might dull an instruments vibrations, too. The added protection would be nice. I’m leaning toward just shellac and practicing how to repair it well for when it inevitably dings. I don’t have spray equipment and don’t want to invest in any, so it limits my options. I guess the lacquer aerosol cans are an option, too, but most reviews say the results are so-so.
I don’t do poly, so I can’t say.
I would let the shellac cure for a good while after you’ve done your finish. Then I’d do a couple days of three or four rubs with Tru-oil, using superfine steel wool on each pass.
I guess I should have been clear or asked what you meant.
Obviously, I use polymerized oils. I don’t do polyurethane. I don’t have respiratory issues, but I can’t be in a room with the stuff. And it just takes forever to dry. I did a floor with it about 20 years ago. I will never touch the stuff again. It was a nightmare from start to the very long finish.

An Arizona writer sums up the Cats offensive success vs the phighting phils this way, sounds like a method which plays well to the Beavs abilities/limitations:

I think Luton has the best feel for the passing game and he has the height to see the field from the pocket. That being said he can’t stay on the field, so there’s not enough sample size, but he has been good when he’s out there this year.
I agree with this sentiment. Luton had timing with the receivers. I only watched Luton play QB since I only started watching after the CU 75 yard TD run. Luton appeared to know which route would be open to throw to once the receiver got clear of the defender. I mean, look at the Trevon Bradford catch coming off a inside slant. No INT’s also makes it seem like he was itching to get out there, but was also protecting the ball. I’m curious to see how this weeks prep will look with utilizing a two QB situation. Look for both, if not all 3 QB’s to play this Saturday. It’s all about rhythm. We need to be able to have a rhythm running the ball with Blount/Colletto in the game, and a running attack with JJ or AP in the backfield when Luton is in the game.
In hindsight, Colorado’s record was good, but they really haven’t beaten anyone all year. ASU was their best win.
USC’s win quality is similar, save their close win over the Cougs. Statistically, their offense is one of the worst in the country (then again, you could have said the same thing about Cal). They’ve been bad on turnover margin.
I’m still not convinced by our D. I think a lot of yesterday’s win had to do with CU miscues and bad playcalling. Now, USC had their fair share of miscues when we played last year, but we were too much of a trainwreck to capitalize.
I think USC wins in a close win, but we’re going to have enough momentum from winning a road game that we can keep it close.
Speaking of ASU, I thought Herm Edwards would be much worse. He’s like mediocre Mike down there.
Colorado receivers dropped a lot balls.
I saw at least two passes from Colletto dropped.
I agree that we don’t have the talent compared to USC, but judging from their record, we may actually have the coaching advantage in this match-up. With the high from winning at Colorado, who knows what could happen.
Also, gotta say that I would rather face USC right now than UCLA for sure.
Not completely sold on the idea that OSU can keep USC close next weekend, simply because of the secondary. The team desperately needs David Morris back.
A big factor is who each team starts at qb and if they can finish the game.
Isn’t a little disagreement a good thing? It’s why I prefer your site over the others.
Jefferson #3 in the country in rushing yards, #1 in the Pac ahead of AZ’s Taylor by 5 yards….no fair, Taylor got to play against OSU and UO’s defenses….
Looks like he’s 4th in the country in TDs….has 12 to Taylor’s 6.

Parker’s end of game call
It’s too bad Luton’s got the stigma of being the guy who drove the nail into McMaryions coffin.
I don’t even think of that.
Anyway, 4 games left and then bye bye.
Wow, haven’t looked at McM’s stats since game 2 or so. What a year. 4 more TD passes this weekend brings him to 18, with 7 rushing as well.
http://www.espn.com/college-football/player/gamelog/_/id/3127332/marcus-mcmaryion
Wonder if the NFL takes a shot on him. He could be a “boring game manager” and 2nd stringer. With his intelligence maybe even work into a Ryan Fitzpatrick scenario.
Fresno State’s only loss…….. the mighty Golden Gophers.
Ryan Fitzpatrick is a gun slinger though. McM has no where near the cannon Fitzpatrick does.
Fitz has a rag arm. It’s actually worse than McM’s.
In 2012, when Fitz was in his “prime”, he was ranked 31 out of 32 for worst arm strength. I’m not sure what you’re talking about, tbh.
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1266536-power-ranking-the-arm-strength-of-all-32-nfl-starting-qbs#slide2
I don’t know how they come up with those rankings every time I watch Fitzpatrick he is throwing 60 yard bombs to D-Jax.
Wish there was some empirical information out there on this. The NFL combine has been measuring velocity since 2008 but that predates Fitzpatrick. Interestingly Desean Watson has one of the weaker arms based on velocity at the combine and when you watch him he can bomb it deep and make all the throws NFL QBs need to make.
Fitzpatrick throwing a 65 yd TD to a wide open Mike Evans on the 45 is not a 60 yard bomb. Throwing an inside slant to his TE and watching him beat the backer to the edge also isn’t a 60 yard bomb.
He can throw it maybe 50 yards in the air. But he’s not the kind of QB who can see his man open then hit him that deep. He has to trust that the receiver is just going to be at the space where he’s throwing it, which is usually located well.
The empirical evidence is simply watching throw.
Then I’m confused in what you see.
You don’t even get confirmation bias with MMs velocity. He throws a pretty ball. He’s smart. His footwork is a shit-ton better than it was even last year. But there are just throws he can’t make because of his arm strength. And faster teams are going to expose that.
None of it is enough to get me to watch MWC football. I get enough of that level of play with my alma mater.
There are varying sources out there for finding in-game velocities, if you don’t want to do the physics yourself. But you still have to get a bug up your ass one day and dive into several players individually to put together a consensus on each. And then you discover that numbers vary depending on situations and just give it up because you’re not getting paid anything for this.
Oh, I thought Bleacher Report is what you were going on… lol
Nice stats and season, schedule strength not impressive however. I know its not everything, but has his arm strength and velocity improved? He’s got be to be bigger and stronger now, and likely getting better QB coaching then he got at OSU….
I think an NFL team signs him. He’ll have two solid seasons of game tape and two bowl games, to evaluate, correct? New Orleans, LA, or even Seattle would be the good destinations for him. NO and LA would be great places to learn, LA has a progressive HC/OC, and could use him effectively. NO and SEA don’t have prototypical QBs” (height anyway), and Wilson may not last long at the rate he gets sacked up there.
NO already has 3 QBs on their roster. Think they like Bridgewater as the heir to Brees, or at least a stopgap, and Taysom Hill has looked great as their Wildcat QB.
Hawai’i was the first winning team they’ve played. And one look at their schedule says they were a handful of plays away from being sub-.500 against some dregs.
But Fitzpatrick has a stronger arm than MM. The comparison is better if we talk about intelligence. MM is more like a Mike Glennon with smarts.
Angry you’re running the risk of being non adaptable on Luton. He’s clearly better than he was last year. Whether that’s the coaching, system or just maturation on his part it up for debate, but he’s clearly a different dude back there. He sucked last year and had no business beating out MCm but that doesn’t mean he has to have that same label today when all empirical data shows he’s improved.
Re: Sc , they are beatable if we get some early momentum. The vibe down here about them and UCLA is all bad and Helton is a lame duck Coach. He’s gone either before the last game or shortly after. Pittman jr. Is. A beast of a Wr but outside of him there aren’t really the typical beast athletes on offense. The running game is so so especially for SC standards and on D they are really undisciplined and really void of the typical nasty fronts we’re used to seeing from them.
Still a big test to see where we are at though after the huge win.
He has four games left and isn’t “the answer”…I’m really not invested in this debate to care either way. If you want to think he’s good, go for it.
If you’re not invested in the debate, why did you start a new thread on it?
Other people seem invested in it based on the prior thread.
Glad about the win and Luton playing well for 2 quarters, but let’s be real. Luton wasn’t even supposed to play so the Buffs did not game plan for him and I think he caught them off guard more than anything. Now if he beats USC this week then we can start talking about him being the man…
If OSU beats USC this weekend then Helton is gone… It is the OSU way to beat a team we shouldn’t be able to beat and their coach gets fired. It history repeating itself!
We still barely know who Jake Luton is as a player. He’s played in maybe 5 total games since he’s been a Beav because of all of the time spent injured. This year he barely has a full game under his belt, but at least the most recent sample has shown improvement over the prior games.
At this point he represents our best chance at another W just because he can get the ball to our receivers better than the other options have shown lately. I dont care if he can’t run, as long as he isnt taking -10 yard sacks in every series.
His best pass of the day was the short out to Flemings. We haven’t had anyone on the roster who could make that pass since Mannion.
I didn’t get to see every play, so i missed that one. i just liked that he was able to get rid of the ball quickly which helped minimize negative yardage drive killers. Some passes were off, especially the deep ones, but overall he played a pretty good game. I also like the play I saw where he got rid of the ball and then through a would be defender down to the ground who tried to hit him late. A nice little GTFOH moment for him.
I still don’t know what the long term cost/benefit is to having him start the rest of the season. On the one hand, we may sneak in another win or 2 even. On the other hand, we’re not developing anybody who will be on the roster next year, and at this point in the season does 1 or 2 potential W’s outweigh development? I guess for morale and recruiting, I could see the former being a little more helpful. Watching Colletto get sacked over and over isn’t very fun to watch either. Wasn’t entirely his fault, but some of it was.
This is the best pass of the day!

We’re not just developing a QB. We’re developing a team. Part of that is competing to win. Part of that is having someone at QB who necessitates the rest of the O runs at a normal (or somewhat close) pace.
Running those receivers and TEs at a Blount pace limits their playbooks. That limit makes it easier to scheme against, taking away most of the scaled down O. Then they lose interest, because they know the play that was just called again will be covered… again. And that only matters if they’re the first read, anyway… and sometimes 12 feet tall.
if the Beavs beat SC Helton will be fired before sundown on Sunday
On the bus at the airport. That’s how they do it in Trojanland.
I thought they just left them on the tarmac with a nice cocktail and a severance check.
Helton would be the first with discriminating taste about his cocktails.
I saw aggressive lbs tackling through runners rather than timidly running into the play. Did Wetzel even see the field? He seemed to have a few plays each game where he ran alongside a rb rather than attacking the play. I think things finally clicked for some guys on D, especially the freshmen lbs.
Good win for JS era. Great day for OSU, Rueck gets another 5*, ducks lose, huskies lose, stanford loses.
I still think weather conditions on game night will have a huge psychological advantage for the Beavers. USC is used to playing in the warm confines of the coliseum; they hate coming to Corvallis and Pullman for that matter, and this being a 7:00 pm night game, with most likely rainy conditions, will be advantage Beavers. I would not say this had we not pulled out the win on Saturday, but I really believe that the Beavs win this one; the momentum is in their favor. USC hasn’t been that good this year. The important thing is that our players THINK they can win this game.
Yeah it will be interesting to see. If we had more horses on D I’d feel good about the game. USC still out athletes us by a large margin, and even though they aren’t good this year, that might be enough in itself to win easily. Then again, Beavs finally have confidence, and the right mindset can take you far. To me that’s the interesting battle this weekend — their superior athletes vs our newfound confidence.

Ribbed for her pleasure… Ewwwww
Trojans played a true freshman QB against ASU and his inexperience showed. Also had a couple of guys out on suspension and Hufanga got injured, leaving their secondary pretty thin.
Sounds like the starting QB could be back this week, and no word on the suspended guys, but luck o the beavs and Helton’s hot seat say they likely play too. Hufanga will stay out for the rest of the season though.
I don’t think the Beavs have much of a shot this week unless the Trojans go into full meltdown mode during game prep. Crossing fingers we can get Helton fired this week, and steal a recruit(Rodriguez) along the way.
On the downside, I tend to wonder if USC is going to poach Urban Meyer? Has a $10 buyout and firing Helton would also require some buyout money, but USC has resources. If that’s the case, I hope Helton sticks around indefinitely.
Damn, I thought Urban would be worth more.
Seems like if Meyer was interested in USC he would already be there. It’s not like the job has been stable in recent years.

Benton County Sheriff’s Office arrested Oregon State cornerback DeShon Wilson on Sunday, booking the freshman cornerback on a misdemeanor charge of fourth-degree domestic violence assault.
No details about the alleged incident were available. A call was placed to Benton County Sheriff’s Office seeking additional information.
Wilson has been suspended indefinitely from the football program while the situation is under investigation, according to a university spokesperson.
Wilson did not travel with Oregon State to Boulder, Colo. on Saturday, where the Beavers beat Colorado 41-34 to end a 22-game road losing streak.
Wilson has played twice this season, in games against Washington State and California. He enrolled at Oregon State last January and went through spring practice.

So I read that Choker’s extra point kick to take the lead at the end of regulation was partially blocked. Put Egger’s did say it was a low kick. Do anyone know how many blocked kicked OSU has had against them this year? Choker’s kick do seem to be low all the time. In Egger’s article he pointed out that someone on twitter said to leaver Choker in Boulder… Choker replied he was going back to Corvallis with his team and the 9 points he contributed. You got to admit, good response from Choker. With that said can we recruit a good kicker? It is affecting me as I watch other football games. I was so stressed every time the Rams brought out their kicker yesterday even though it was a centered bullet every time.
Kick was blocked, not partially blocked. The line completely collapsed which led to a rushed kick.
Check the replay.
With choukair, it’s all mental.

Luton with PAC 12 offensive player of the week honors. I can see that.
So the award goes to whoever in the conference has the most yards in a W against Oregon State, or the guy for Oregon State who has the most yards when they win, because of how rare an accomplishment that is.
So if we scrimmage we’d clean up on the weekly awards? :-)
I think Luton gives the Beavers the most upside. If our D were stronger I would be more for giving the ball back to Blount. But I think with this win Luton deserves the shot at finishing out the year barring injury. As far as developing QB’s for next year, I’d rather the Beavers worry 100% about this year.
I agree Luton gives us our best chance the other qbs hold onto the ball too long and they lose too many yards on each sack. As far as developing I’m not worried about. Gebbia is probably going to walk in and be the starter and the other guys have gotten meaningful snaps.
Yup^^^^^. The other two can be situational guys.
I actually got my QB2 wish this last weekend.
Just to clarify on Luton: I hope he wins us some games. I’m not rooting against the guy. I honestly forgot he is the reason we don’t have McM. It’s nothing to do with that. I just don’t like him as a QB. I didn’t like Mannion, either. I’m not a fan of statues who hone in on one WR and rely on that guy to make them look good. I like intelligent QB play with moxie. Kellen Moore, Dan Lefevour, Mariotta, et al…these guys all had that. None of them would make good NFL QBs, but all had what it takes to make a great college QB. I look for intelligence, moxie, “it factor”, efficiency, running ability/pocket presence, and a guy you fully trust with the game on the line. I don’t see any of that in Luton. He’s good in mop up duty with no pressure vs bad teams. Always said Luton’s one strength is the short/intermediate pass (he’s terrible on deep balls, which is what he was brought in for), and he’s been hitting those and letting our talented WRs do their work. They are making him look good, just like Cooks made Mannion look good. Also, if he were on the Ducks all of you guys who claim to like him would be laughing at how bad their QB situation was. Think about that bias. So yeah, he sucks, but I want him to have a few more good games for us to help recruiting, etc. I’m not rooting against the guy. He seems like a genuinely nice person. You guys tried to convince me Seth Collins and a bunch of other bozos were good, too. I’m just not buying it. Even if he has 4 great games to end the season, I want nothing to do with him. I’m looking forward to next year and getting some legit QBs in the program. When I say I don’t want in on the debate these are the reasons why. Hopefully this ends the discussion via explanation. What I’m looking at this year is to see if the coaching staff is good (they seem to be) and who will be the game changers on both sides of the ball moving forward (sadly, not many…hope these last four games see some major jumps in development).
This isn’t going to be popular, but thumbing me down has no effect. Go for it. If I were in this for a popularity contest I’d buy out all the cheerleader sites. If this somehow undermines my “credibility” have a field day trying to make that argument when I can pull out hundreds of posts (hire Leach, fire Riley, start McM, bench Collins, Cristobal is a posuer, Taggart is a fraud, Pankey blows, Kreb brothers belong in DIII, etc etc) that have proven to be correct, and the people making these claims never put their opinions in writing.
I know I said I’m not going to debate Luton because I don’t care about the situation, and that is true, but it seems people really want to talk about this and understand why, so these are the reasons. Let it die? Four more games and then it’s on to a guy who looks to be a legit QB next year.
Mariota had one of the stronger arms at the combine. I wouldn’t write him off as a NFL QB yet, been a lot of change in that organization and not a lot of consistent weapons on offense.
Your arguments are a lot of why I want to see Luton finish out the year. The WRs are some of our best assets on offense. Going with the QB that maximizes their talents makes a lot of sense even if it is the WRs at least in part making him look good.
If Luton ends the season with 5 great games against the 5 best teams on our conference schedule, there will have to be noticeable improvement that takes place. That would indicate solid coaching and probably a change in the kind of player Luton is.
Luton isn’t why MM left. MM is why MM left.
Not sure what you guys are making up in your heads.
And no, Mariota’s arm has never been a great one. He’s lower third of the NFL starters as of now. But that doesn’t mean much, given that Fitzpatrick has one of the weakest arms out there. It’s just that Fitz is smart, and it takes a couple games for opposing meatheads to figure him out.
Mariota’s strength was that he could misdirect with his head while his feet were pointing to his true read… that, and wheels in the college game means something. He would set himself up for that “third read” immediately, but his head would track away from the play until the timing dictated he turn and throw. He was really good at that in college. There was really no hope for him on the NFL level until someone developed him for the speed of the game. Pro Ds don’t peek so much. They get cut if they do… well… in a non-watered down league they would. His release is superb. But that whole, “He reads the field so well,” canard was just ridiculous when you watched his body.
GA is why MM left.
That makes more sense.
It’s still not true.
I should amend that. I am a buck stops here type of asshole, after all.
So yes, GA was fully responsible for everything good and bad that happened while he was head coach. The bad far outweighed the good.
MM simply saw an opportunity to do something for himself, and he took it. The reasons are immaterial, except to engage in some relativist judgments about individuals. Was it an added burn on GA that he didn’t have contingencies for MM choosing to do it when he did it?
I don’t care. It just is what it is at that point. If I had to delve into the relativism of it, I would have to find the flaws on all sides to be honest about the strengths. Otherwise, I’m just hating for the sake of hating.
I dunno that he is the weakest arm out there. I kind of more put him in the Andrew Luck and Matt Ryan category in the middle but like I said above kind of hard to find empirical info out there without paying for data.
Fitzpatrick is definitely one of the weakest arms out there. He throws to a point with timing, but he can’t hit the deep and wide outs required to put him over the top. His velocity is somewhere in the low 50s. Mariota is somewhere in the mid-50s, sometimes more on check downs. ~60 or above is a strong arm.
60 or above is extremely rare.
… in college.
There are always a handful of pros who top that regularly during a season. And a couple (Drew Brees) who can do it once in a while when lathered up, but normally play in the mid-50s or a little higher.
What’s rare is when we have so many young arms who can top 60. Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes have some impressive arms.
I suppose the early 80s was the last time a large group of big arms came into the league.
Shut up loser, you never played sports.
heh heh…
Honest question but what happens if he applies, and is granted a 6th year of eligibility? Given the injury he had last year this could possibly happen no? Not saying I am hoping for this but I would assume it is a possibility.
I think he can play only so many quarters to qualify.
I’m okay with him as a backup or 3rd stringer. He belongs in one of those two positions. Ideally 3rd string, but since we’re building depth might have to deal with him as 2nd.
I think the Beavs will be bringing in SDSU commit Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson for an official visit this week. 6’6″ OLineman with an ASU offer too. Should know for sure later today.
https://247sports.com/Recruitment/Brandon-Crenshaw-Dickson-119954/RecruitInterests/
Can he play defense?
There are several JC DL and CB guys who I think could be coming in for a visit over the last 2 home games as well, but Crenshaw-Dickson is a Guard/Center
I know. It was a joke. I ask that about every recruit. I’ll take an O-lineman, though.
I’d put our needs as “front seven”, O-line, another QB.
I knew you were kidding, but figured the info would still be something others might want to know.
None of these guys can play PG, btw.
Don’t forget DBs….
So wow, that is a lot of needs lol
Yeah, we need a lot of dudes.
I would put our needs as follows:
Defense in general, Center, Other OL, 1 more P-5 caliber QB who has decent speed for a QB, then TE.
we can talk about some thing positives will it last?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqbH-hQ_r7I
Worth watching, thanks for the post.
3:40 “I like being aggressive (on 4th down) in regards to letting our guys know we out there to win the game…”
10:38 Morris…….hopeful for the last game or two….”I don’t see him playing this weekend.”
11:00 Choukair’s our guy
11:56 Planned to go for two if it came down to it for the win
13:25 Watch JS response to the question of what happens with the D giving up big plays right after halftime.
Some may disagree, but I don’t see the influence of the “highly respected” gum chewer in the way JS handles this press conference. I think he is his own person, and an even-keeled one at that.
Did he comment at all on DeShon Wilson?
Nope.
And, really, little need to. Wilson was already suspended for unspecified reasons before this weekend, wasn’t he?
JS was recently quoted as saying that his least favorite part of the job is discipline. (Not the “stay in your lane”, “maintain your gap”, on field type)
Thanks. I didn’t realize he had been suspended prior to yesterday. I saw those same comments so was curious how was going to handle this. The only other disciplining I could think of was Bright Ugwoebu, who we could really use of late.
“We’re confident he’s our guy, he’s got some talent”
Excuse me while I cry
If there’s no viable replacement on the roster, what else is he going to say?
You also left out in the 3:40 section that it’s a flow thing. We don’t go for it every time, but it’s selective and if we feel we need Touchdowns rather than field goals to win the game. That last part is the difference between Riley and JS. I enjoy Smith’s press conferences a lot more than any coach we’ve had at Oregon State. He’s definitely getting more confident/comfortable with the media. He knows how to give information without giving away his hand.
When asked about Blount, he’s still in concussion protocol, but they expect him to dress and be ready to play Saturday. So by all accounts, we should have 3 fairly healthy QB’s to go against USC.
The other thing OneOldBeav didn’t point out from the presser was JS stating what and when they decided to pull Colletto and put in Jake Luton. “They looked at the scoreboard and said, we need to try something different and give this team a spark, and Jake gave us that spark. It also shows the maturity of Colletto to be able to come in on that goal line situation and give us the touchdown and keep his head in the game instead of being upset about being pulled.” It’s so easy to see what JS is trying to do with this team, but at the same time, it’s unpredictable because he comes up with various ideas and situations BEFORE they come up. Example being JS mentioned him and Lindgren talking throughout the 3rd quarter about when and what play to go for 2 before they got to the point where a field goal ties it or 2 point conversion wins it. They had plays designed for Colletto, but nothing prepared for Luton. They chose the play with Luton to Hodgins, and they executed and a high level. That’s also the emphasis he mentions about 2 point conversions and 4th downs. JS and his staff emphasize if they are going to go for those opportunities, they have to execute at a very high level each time in order for them to even consider going for it.
I guess?
Shouldn’t that be the default attitude of anyone who knows what it means to be a member of a team? That’s not a maturity thing, per se. That’s just common sense. And on top of that, his number was called both times. What’s not to love about that?
But, if we’re to follow this logic, then being pouty and whiny is a sign of immaturity, not being a terrible teammate?
Sounds like Morris won’t be much factor. Smith says they maybe get 1 or 2 games from him to end the year.
Nice to have the new redshirt rule in place this year.
Hopefully can stay healthy for one season at least =\
First hole in the condom so far this week.
Helton fires his OL coach and will take over play calling this week. Good news for the “Jason Rodriguez to Corvallis” fan club
https://usctrojans.com/news/2018/10/29/usc-football-head-coach-clay-helton-to-take-over-play-calling-duties-offensive-line-coach-neil-callaway-relieved-of-his-duties.aspx
From the announcement:
Leaves an opening for Coach Pitre to return home and get a payday. Hopefully Helton has a different RB coach in mind already. Pitre has been one of Smith’s best hires so far, coaching and recruiting wise.
Derp, I was thinking Pitre was a USC guy this whole time, but turns out he played at UCLA.
Helton may have little to do with hiring SC’s next RB coach.
I hope they keep him and just have a bunch of support staff turnover. It’s nice when USC is having down years.
What I hope they don’t do:
1. Have the patience to wait on Venables to interview.
2. Go after Matt Campbell.
3. Broken record here… but Lance Leipold will be getting looks after Buffalo goes 11-1 this year… with their only loss being to a pissed off Army team.
4. Hire Norv Turner as a placeholder for a couple years, then give an ungodly sum to Venables to be coach-in waiting.
Jay Norvell wouldn’t be a good fit. Les Miles could be the placeholder type (and he could catch lightning in a bottle in LA). Gary Patterson would be decent for a couple years.
Jason Garrett could use a new job, and Bikey could be his OC.
Drevno failed with Captain Comeback at Michigan, so we will see how that goes.
Does anyone have a line on replay of Saturday’s game?
Jake, that you?!?
No access to TV and only internet is phone hot spot. Listened to game but wanting to see the replay. Mostly rely on youtube days after the fact but no luck yet.
This is why the Pac’s next step is to have a standalone app with on-demand viewing. And if they do it with a Football in 60 option, I think they get mega downloads. That feature is awesome… if it’s not tied to having a cord. It actually makes football not more boring than baseball.
Precisely.
I would pay per game. Often.
Has anyone emailed that suggestion to Larry Scott, or at least Barnes?!? Hell, send it to Rueck while Casey is on sabbatical, he might move it…
Poyer on Monday Night Football, go Bills! Bills have a good D.
Anderson too…betting he struggles..
DA being DA.
I think DA is more of a “Nuke LaLoosh” from Bull Durham than is Luton…
I was at the game at UW when DA threw 5 picks and gave the game away to the lesser team on that day. That was a suckler performance than anything I’ve seen aside from Matt Moore’s 7 picks vs Arizona.
But I bet they were perfect spirals. Guy had a cannon.
He threw a beautiful TD pass…….. to the Patriots
Nothing on a bad Johnson and commiting to Herm? Kid said osu slowed on him. Is this a bad kiss by our staff or is our other incoming talent just better?
Might not check the low ego box
He’s a 2020 recruit. Long ways till signing day for that class.
Pretty sure if he’s anything like his dad’s personality, he’s really good, but has an ego/arrogance about him.
Sounds like a Duck.
Oregonian says civil war back on. I don’t think so. Beavs defense is still really bad.
Luckily, the Ducks’ offense has been pretty bad without Herbert since he’s been there.
Ducks don’t run the ball real well. If you look at the games the Beavers have been close in it has been against teams that don’t run the ball well. Not saying we have a great chance but I think the game is more winnable than a lot of our other opponents.
I agree. They’re just trying to stoke the fire to set themselves up for more clicks leading up to the CW.
Several potential official visitors this weekend. Here’s who I think we’ll be seeing(although subject to change, of course)
JC DE Simon Sandberg (offered by OSU over the weekend, likely to visit)
JC DT Myles Tapusoa (offered by OSU last week)
JC CB Jaylen Watson
2019 SDSU OL commit Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson
JC DB Damarrion Williams
Rueck loses out on a huge recruit. Cameron Brink commits to Stanford. She’s the kind of recruit that carries the program for 4 years.
2020 recruit so maybe still time to change her mind. Can’t blame her for attending a school with great academics and athletics.
Didn’t go to Eugene, so all is well.
Was Rueck recruiting her in the first place? I hadn’t read anything about her in the past
I think he will be looking for Guards/wing in the 2020 class. PG for sure.
Vegas favors SC by 14, Eggers has SC by only 6.
Oh, and the line for ucks/bruins has dropped nearly in half on injury questions, ucks still favored by 7.
https://pamplinmedia.com/pt/12-sports/410472-309914-kerry-says-could-osu-do-it-again-
Anyone know why Aydon was suspended for Cal?
https://m.soundcloud.com/user-276203524/osu-cu-4thq-ot-postgame-10-27-18
Wannabeav this is Parker and Wilson’s call of second half and post game
Some beaver fan privately messaged me because I “liked” a single post today related to Donald Trump incorrectly stating the US is the only country in the world with birth right citizenship.
He said I should stop with the political likes and dislikes, because they’re not what he’s interested in from me. 1 single “like”, and he’s jumping on it.
Anyway, fuck that guy for telling me how to run my account. He can eat a MAGA dick
Make Dick Great Again!
Don’t sugarcoat it like that. tell us what you really think. :)
None the less, he is correct. By the way, there won’t be a 10% tax cut for the middle class, you are not being invading, and the Dude doesn’t have the “right” to overturn the Constitution.
Other than that, is anyone having problems with the Pac-12 network the past few weeks? live games are scrambled, other times I get notices that the channel will be available shortly–(it’s not)
I’ve been streaming on the Pac12 network site without any problems, via comcast login.
PAC 12 Oregon and Mountain shit the bed during the game on Saturday. Sling said it was the PAC 12 not them.
So, everyone involved points their finger at the other guy? Surprise!
FWIW, I streamed the entire game via my Bendbroadband cable account using the “TV anywhere” feature.
Same issue with Sling on Saturday…work around is to sign in at Pac12 with sling info and stream from there directly.
Cable works just fine.
MAGA=the biggest bunch of whiny PC pussies that ever existed
Oh… you can’t slap a woman on the ass anymore without getting rightly called a dick.
Boo fucking hoo… you whiny POS!
POS? Yes, point of sale revolutionized retail, but not sure what it has to do with Sling TV?
I think that it is a symptom of our like and dislike society . What happened to being able to just disagree.
Someone conflated inequity with inequality, and they convinced their minions that bogeymen were coming to take something from them.
And then the purported bogeymen said, “Well, that’s just fucking stupid. That’s not even close to what we said… or want… or even imagined that we wanted… let alone wanted enough to organize the herd of cats you think can be some monolithic evil. Who thinks of stuff this stupid?”
And then some really stupid whiny pussies took offense to that and said, “You just don’t *sniffle* understand our plight.”
Whatever, dood. Pyhooya.
I guess you disagree then?
I’m glad you can.
You can’t disagree with fiction. You can only point out that it’s not reality.
But now we have a bunch of yahoos running around with their hair on fire calling truth opinion with reckless abandon. So if I ask someone to pick a number between 1 and 10, and they say -7, it does me no good to say they win or lose. They’ve chosen to play in poor faith, and that’s all I can tell them. All they’re going to tell me is it’s my opinion that -7 is not between 1 and 10. And then I just think they’re stupid.
The only truth, in the end, is that nobody (including themselves) can really understand them.
And when the bogeymen are anyone and everyone always, it just starts to look silly.
Does USC still teach ther O-lineman to go for the knee? OSU D linemen be wary….
I fail to see the logic of putting an opposing player or two out of the game since it’s often more than one game they miss; don’t you just want to get a quality win, not decimate your opponent so that that teams’ competitiveness in future contests is compromised? I mean if your opponents record looks stronger but you beat them, isn’t that a good thing?
You got that right – never seen such a bunch of cheap shot artists, especially when Pete Carrol was coaching them. I remember watching Tim Alexander sprinting down the sidelines on a break out run, heading to the end zone. One of USC’s DB’s caught him and hit him out of bounds, breaking his leg. I hated USC even before that, but this just solidified it for me.
Ahhh… Tim Alexander… I wonder if Justin Wilcox remembers him.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWiQL8kEAUs
That USC hit his frosh year was Mark Cusano, a LB, and it was a broken collarbone. That hit is seared in my memory for whatever reason. I could see Cusano making a beeline for the side and just t-boning Tim into the bench. I don’t remember any penalty after the hit, but it didn’t really matter all that much after he went out.
ducks’ Herbert and Mitchell are both in concussion protocol this week?
Another dumbshit move by Cristobol, leaving Herbert in the game after Arizona went up 29 with 4 minutes to go. I guess that goal line hit he took in the last minute is where Herbert got concussed.
Mitchell got rocked earlier in the game.
If neither plays vs UCLA, this could be a real wheels fall off weekend for those fans. Should be fun!
Terrible coach. Just as bad as Taggart.
Maybe worse, at least Slick Willie provided humor via twitter!
The Quacks should be 4-4. The worse thing about the Husky kicker missing that gimme was that we had to listen to “Ducks in the playoffs” bullshit for longer than we should have from the local AND national media. Thankfully, that was quickly squashed.
If the Ducks had played a halfway decent non-conference schedule, they would be 3-5 instead of 5-3. Beavers have much more talent on offense at the skilled positions (except QB). Ducks RBs and receivers are average at best with the exception of Mitchell. Don’t know what happened to Tony Brooks James, but I thought last year he was second only to Royce Freeman. The Ducks have trended toward mediocrity ever since the epic 31-0 halftime meltdown vs. TCU in the Remember the Alamo fiasco and I love it because their fan base is so myopic.
Would be great if a Duck meltdown earlier in the day could be followed by a late night OSU win over USC.,,
I was driving south of Grants Pass this week and caught some of a Cristobal press coverage on the radio, I was a little surprised at how hard the local media were pushing him. Paraphrasing, but a lot of “how the fuck did you lose to Arizona by 29” type questions. He gave generic coach-speak answers, it’s no lovefest, you can tell the media is frustrated with the last three years. They may not have gotten along with Chipster, but I’m sure they loved the relevance of the program.
Cristobal wants to build strength from both lines, and “win games in the fourth quarter” to mimic Alabama.
Knight and the fan base don’t realize how unique Kelly’s success was. They won’t have patience for an alternative approach and soon they’ll be chasing their (brief) glory years like Mebrasja, Texas, Tennessee…
If they don’t figure out some kind of actual offensive scheme none of that is going to matter. They look like last year’s OSU offense, just sort of flailing around with no real direction.
Looks like there’s a chance the Beavs will host several of their top 2020 guys this weekend for their official visits. The rules changed this year where juniors can officially visit schools any time after Sept 1st.
Potential visitors are Clark Phillips, Isaiah Newell and Tuli Tuipulotu.
Something to keep an eye on at least
I also might be premature with that. Will find out more tomorrow
That’s great that they’re getting, hopefully, some of their top targets to visit. Do you think that we’re having them visit too early? I know half the battle is getting them to Corvallis but seems to me we’d like them to visit closer to when they’re going to make a decision. With that being said, we’re not recruiting from a strong position now so maybe you take the OV whenever you can get it.
I was wrong about this. The rules changed in 2018 for most sports, where Juniors could start taking official visits starting September 1st, but that rule change didn’t apply to football or basketball for some reason.
Football 2020 visits can start April 1st through the end of June, and then again when the new season starts.
Football and hoops have their own set of recruiting rules. Some of the hard dates coincide with other sports for efficiency purposes. But their recruiting activities vary quite a bit because of the off-season schedules.
Hoops changed it a couple years ago. I can’t remember the numbers off the top of my head, but coaches can start contacting PSAs as soon as they’re officially juniors (minus dead or no-contact periods). They increased the number of OVs a PSA can have over a two-year span, and they dumped all regulations involving texting. I think they get 7 OVs over two years, with the ability to visit schools once in either calendar year, beginning somewhere around the beginning of August or September.
Interesting, thanks.
Maryland keeps Durkin as HC. Wow. I wonder how many players leave?
Leave the team, or leave a head coach’s meeting?
Both
Women’s ranked 8th in preseason poll. Picked 3rd in pac12.
Sounds right.
They have an exhibition this sat at 11am. Nice opportunity to see the freshman play. The bigs are the key to the year.
Who’s 1 and 2? UO, Stanford?
Yes
Has there ever been an official announcement about Aquino red-shirting due to injury?
Nope
I guess you’ll find out Saturday is she plays or not.
No, there hasn’t but I’ve confirmed it with a father of a Beaver player. He works out at the same club I do and we talk a lot about Beaver women’s basketball.
According to Gopher sources there will be two Rodent vs Rodent baseball matchups this season. Rematch of the Super Regional.
One in Surprise, AZ, and one in Seattle at Safeco. Gonzaga will also be in Surprise.
Rest up, get a shot of vitamin E, a pack of smokes for after…
Eight minutes with Lindgren. Notice at the very end where he discusses the approach to fourth down.
Smith lets him know on second down (sometimes even first) that they will use all four downs to reach the line to gain. Preaching to the choir here, as many AB’s (along with Big Jim) have pushed for this approach in the past. An approach which seemed too far out of the box for some previous staffs.
And another thing which previous staffs seemed to overlook: sideline demeanor. I’ve heard Smith mention the sideline vibe (positively) more in eight games than, probably, the last eight seasons. Anyone agree? Is my memory there in error? Influenced by the fact that I appreciate Smith’s overall approach?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzgkbwdNAcw&feature=youtu.be
I love this approach to 4th down, and as I said in an earlier thread, or earlier in this thread, Smith is on the verge of a strategic breakthrough. At present he is taking recourse to it out of necessity. I hope that if and when we get a quality Defense that he doesn’t revert to orthodoxy. Riley almost always punted on 4th and short inside the opponents 50; sometimes inside the 40! Unless the Beavs had a precision punter, and even with a competent punter, half the time a punt is going to hit the end zone resulting in a net gain of 20-25 yards of field position. That distance is merely one long first down play or at most two first downs before the effect is equalized. Always struck me as a low percentage, low IQ play.
I remember a report we discussed here when Chip was still at U of O that there was some super crazy computer statistical analysis done over 20 year period that proved out playing aggressive would help more then hurts if you do it consistently. I believe it was done at a big university back east and notably at the time Chip Kelly and Bill Bilacheck were a couple of the only coaches that met with and discussed the study.
I think the conclusion is if your good you’ll score more touchdowns in trade for field goals as most teams will continue to be Conservative.
Peterson is definitely another coach that I feel takes a lot of chances.
Hoping Smith continues it as well. Another thing to sell recruits on. Kind of a gunslinger we play to win attitude.
“Another thing to sell recruits on. Kind of a gunslinger we play to win attitude.”
Yup, same with the frequent use of “trick” plays.
It puts a ton of pressure on the defense when they have to defend all 4 downs. Seemed like Chip often broke our will when the D would hold on 3rd down only to have the ducks convert on 4th down. I loved to hate him but also hated that I loved his aggressiveness.
Jim Michalczik is a stud. You can tell he has a lot of respect for JS . Didn’t know he won Natty with Miami back in ‘91.
https://osubeavers.com/coaches.aspx?rc=973&path=football
15 yard penalty for use of the term natty.
It can only be said when making fun of ducks or referring to natural ice.
Wait… he’s not referring to Natty Natty?
Michalczik looks like he’s pounded a few, and he was on the East Coast.
I pound mine every night and my biceps are ripped. Oh, wait a minute, we’re not talking about that kind of pounding. My mistake…..
Mmmm… ambidexterity!
Listened to a little bit of Huskies postgame. They miss Jonathan Smith heh :)
Now Maryland fired Durkin…….one day after saying he was coming back. Pretty f’d up.
They will be paying him a lot of money for that mistake.
Which mistake? Letting durkin establish a culture where a player died or not firing him earlier?
Maryland fucked up by not firing him in the first place. They released the board of regents recommendation and said they were satisfied with the outcome (which was wrong) and then caved to the outrage that ensued. Durkin is going to get paid. And most likely most of his future salary.
Yup.
It’s not about the money it’s just about the money. College sports new motto.
My prediction for Saturday after finding out the team is wearing all orange on Saturday….55-10 U$C winning. We don’t play well in all orange. I could be wrong, but I would take the points and U$C winning if I were a betting man.
Cheetos never prosper.
They beat Cal in 2016 while wearing all orange…….after almost blowing it and needing overtime to win, but still, a win.
USC HC has fired his OC and is calling plays, so a HC with his ass on the line faces a team gaining confidence….OSU likely to have better play calling…OSU’s Jefferson is extra-motivated and Pierce is playing too…2 RBs, Luton + Coletto inside the 10..(Crazy Leg is going to throw a TD this weekend).
USC has better athletes across the board and better depth, OSU’s D doesn’t have the depth to stay with USC….
ST comes into play, USC typically has the advantage there.
Weather: https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=44.565&lon=-123.2635
This game looks a lot more interesting than it did pre-season.
Kinda goes hand-in-hand: “OSU likely to have better play calling” and “Crazy Leg is going to throw a TD this weekend”
Agree on both.
I thought I read USC fired their o-line coach and T Martin still employed but not calling plays now. Either way, seems like things are on shaky ground in so cal
Knock on wood that colletto td is for the beavs.
Don’t know if this has already been mentioned but this is a good read on Jefferson:
https://pamplinmedia.com/pt/12-sports/410803-310858-why-osu-star-jermar-jefferson-especially-wants-to-compete-saturday-vs-usc
Wow.
Kid’s got integrity.
Hopefully he gets to run all over them.
Sounds like the long ago article about Brandin Cooks who realized he would have more opportunity and attention at OSU. I especially love the part where, as he and his brothers were motoring along the rural scenery to Corvallis, “are you sure about this?”
Lundeberg tweets that AP WILL play this weekend, Blount still not out of concussion protocol.
Looks like OSU, Indiana, UW, and USD March 8-10, 2019 at Safeco. 3 day tournament so would we play UW? Too bad the women’s tournament moved to Vegas as that could have been a fun OSU weekend.

Oregon State, Washington, Indiana, Minnesota, USD should be all of the teams competing. Beavers will play Minnesota on the 8th, Indiana on the 9th and USD likely on the 10th. Tournament only taking place in 2019 which is a shame cause it’s an ideal location for an annual tournament early in the season
Pat Casey will serve as an Asst. Coach for that tournament.
Thanks for the additional info.
Should be a great tournament and I’ll be sure to get in at least 2 games if not all 3. I’m sure OSU will be represented well fanwise.
from what I’ve been able to piece together, a five team tournament means each west coast team has to take one day off. San Diego does not play Friday, UW does not play Saturday, Oregon State does not play Sunday. The two Big 10 teams play each day, which makes sense given their expenses and playing needs. I’m guessing the off -days Seattle U might be in the mix at their place.
Surprise schedule is out too: vs. NM on 2/15; Zags on 2/16; Gophs on 2/17; NM again on Monday the 18th. All four games the following weekend are against Nebraska. 1 pm Thurs and Friday; 5 p.m. Saturday (after the MLB game, no doubt) and 9 a.m. Sunday (prior ditto)
I want to try a little experiment.
I’m curious what you all pay for your average water/sewer bill per month. Some of you probably pay separate bills or in quarterly installments, so just a rough estimate of what your 1 month combined water/sewer calculates out to will do. Post your city/state/cost similar to what i post below.
Portland, OR $149.00
Cottage Grove, OR $105/month.
In Cottage Grove it’s almost $80/month before you use a single drop. If you look at the bill the water itself is dirt cheap.
Ausmville Stayton area Summer $150 per month, other months $95
Varies…………
We moved back in June and currently my home in Philomath is getting ready to go up for sale. No water was used in the month of July. I had a bill for June of around $65. I paid them $100 with the idea that I wouldn’t have a bill for July since no water was being used. I still had a balance for July. So I looked into it. $49 per month goes to the city just for the privilege of being on city water/sewer. Yup. Every single person that is on Philomath city water and sewer pays $49 per month. Even if you use zero water.
I swear it’s like being shaken down by the mafia. My consumption was higher 1 year ago for the same period and i paid $30 less(which was already high). Then they tell you to disconnect your downspouts and limit the stormwater runoff hitting the sewers and I also conserved water, but they jack up the rates to ensure they still get their taste.
Water/sewer is by far my biggest utility bill, and it just keeps growing. At least give me some fucking flouride.
“I swear it’s like being shaken down by the mafia”
Couldn’t have said it better myself. What some people don’t understand is every levy or bond voted on that passes will NEVER go away. It just gets renewed when the levy is up and I don’t believe that requires voter approval.
And they continue to try and pass more every November. It’s maddening. Don’t believe me? Go look at your property tax statement from 10 years ago and compare it to this years. Tax and spend, tax and spend. Rinse, wash, repeat.
The reason we moved and are selling? Philomath annexed us in to city limits. i am not paying another almost one grand in property taxes every year to another government entity. Property taxes go up 3% every damn year. Mine have doubled in the last 12 years.
You can always just cut the cord… you know… go without water… and then die in your front yard from rampant crime… as you watch your house burn down because nobody can get to it… since there are no roads.
Or you can just whine about living in a country that makes indoor plumbing a standard… and how much it costs to live there… if you choose to be a part of it.
Water bill is somewhere between $30 and $40 a month… no sewer… no gas… Unincorporated, Oregon. If you want me to amortize septic, greywater, catchwater systems, power to run a pump and maintenance on it all, then I guess maybe another $30 a month is eventually realized… if I include labor.
Yeah… them beaver… I saw that bullshit, “I;m glad you can express yourself,” talking point.
It was weak.
I grew up Catholic. Bullshit guilt trips based on bullshit political talking points based on bullshit military worship doesn’t even register when I’m pissed off.
On a side note, I love how every moron who loves to point out that National Socialism has Socialism in the name and, therefore must mean it’s socialism, forgets to talk about the Nationalism part of it all.
Hmmm… nationalism plus socialized otherism equals what?
Oh yeah… 1″ inlet.
My business (located in City of Portland) has a 10,000 warehouse. There is a small bathroom in 1 corner that no one uses. 0 consumption. We pay $450.00 per month just for the water connection and storm water. I’ve tried fighting it but it’s a waste of time.
At home (COP) we average approx. $150.00 per month also.
Your base fee is likely based on the size of the meter. Sounds like you have a large meter to me if you base fee is $450, you should be able to get a new smaller meter for cheaper. You might have to plumb in some reducers on either end but that should be easy and well worth it if all your meter serves is 1 bathroom.
It’s mostly stormwater charges
oh ok, yeah the state has been pushing the storm water stuff on municipalities. Think those are based mostly on impervious area of the site. Sound like you probably have a large paved area and/or large warehouse.
That’s not bad, $49 minimum based on where I’m at. We get charge I think its for 7,000 gallons no matter what we used to comes out to around 90 ish per month minimum. Also includes a “safety fee” for additional police patrol in the area.
Omaha, NE our Water Sewer and Natural Gas is combined together. monthly payments of $135 per month for the 3. Our water heater is gas, our furnace is gas, and our stove is gas. Plus, I have a 3 year old and a 17 month old, along with my wife and me all living together. My wife is a stay at home mom, though lately she usually turns the heat/furnace off during the day and we turn it back on at night before the kids go to bed. So for us, it’s pretty reasonable considering our consumption.
When we were living in The Dalles, OR it was $103.00 per month for the first 10,000 gallons of water used. So if you used less, you still have to pay for 10,000 gallons used. We never even got close to that amount. So it all depends upon where you live.
I just looked up our water sewer gas bill for October:
Gas: $30.52
Sewer: $47.17
Water: $19.74
Taxes and gas/water infrastructure replacement: $14.31
Move to Nebraska, it’s cheaper utilities here. Our Electric bill is $75 each month.
Boise Idaho – $75 for sewer and water combined.
Salem bill is$65-70 per month, can go to nearly $100 If I decide to have green grass in the summer.
Albany, OR between 120-150 per month depending on how much I water the garden / grass.
On a shared well. $25/mo summer, $10 winter.
Weather won’t be a factor tomorrow.
Hopefully the coaches don’t go all in on Luton. Give the ball to the best players, the running backs. If Luton is throwing a lot, it means the beavs are getting killed.
Hard to see the defense getting many stops.
USC will have to screw up pretty big to lose this game.
Who is starting at qb for usc?
Daniels
I don’t see how they win without a big game from the QB position.
I think Lindgren is smart enough to not go “all in” on Luton, agree that if he ends up throwing a lot it will be because the Beavs are trying to dig out of a big hole.
If the Beavs use both AP and JJ for, maybe 30+ carries and control the clock, then the D won’t need A LOT of stops; maybe only 3-4 along with a couple TO’s. Facing another QB who has thrown pics this year, need to take advantage.
Penalties could be a factor, maybe the coaching shake up at SC will lead to at least a few procedural penalties.
Season to date stats:
Time of Possession: OSU four minutes more than SC (31:30 vs 27:36)
Penalties: OSU 2 per game better than SC (6.25 vs 8.5), that’s been worth 20 yds/game in the Beavs favor.
Interceptions thrown SC has thrown 7 ints, Beavs 5.
Stupid question, how do you get into the terrace section? do you need a ticket to walk through there, or do you just need a ticket if you want to sit in an actual seat? (looks like seats are about $180 per, which is more than i want to spend)
If i just wanted to have a beer and stand around,. do i still have to have a special pass?
Last year they would randomly give out a certain number of terrace tickets to season ticket holders. We got them twice but never used them. Beer is currently sold throughout the stadium so you shouldn’t have an issue there. And you can leave and reenter should you wish to tailgate at halftime.
Yes, you need a wristband just to get access to the terrace. They do sell beer throughout the stadium now though…but if you want premium beer, I think they have those in club, suite, and loge levels only.
Beer sold everywhere but short to no line for beer and food in terrace. Can’t take beer from terrace to rest of stadium area though. Not sure about food. Can catch visitors coming out of valley football center during halftime if you stand near double doors near cornhole boards. If you need terrace passes I can see if a buddy has some available for tomorrow. You don’t get seats in there but usually a place to stand at bar height tables behind seats. Wristband only gets you into outdoor area.
Thank you all for the info. Appreciate the wrist band offer, but I dont think I’ll need it since I’ll be with my old man, and he’ll want to sit. Plus, we can have beer anywhere now, it sounds like. We’ll probably end up in the corner just over by the terrace. Never sat in that area before
Yeah the standing part is not the best. I usually end up in terrace if my seat is a bad view and want to be closer. Hopefully we can play better at home this weekend. Enjoy the game.
It sounds like Blount is good to go tomorrow if Luton needs to be relieved.
That would be good news, got a source?
Amy at Blitz quoted Smith yesterday saying that Conor was still out:
https://247sports.com/college/oregon-state/LongFormArticle/A-look-back-at-Oregon-States-preparation-for-USC–124078349/#124078349_1
Amy is a legitimate reporter who has to relay coach speak to keep her credentials. I’m a dude on a fan site with other dudes that post terrible YouTube videos at 2 am on a slow Friday night. I’ve heard Blount worked a ton with the 1’s and 2’s this week. Coaches wouldn’t have wasted those reps on him if he wasn’t expected to be cleared to play. I trust what I’ve heard.
Coletto cleared to run two yard qb dives for touchdowns again this week?? I sure hope so!
I also heard Conor spent time with the 1’s (don’t know if it was a ton); good point about wasting time if he wasn’t expected to be available.
I really don’t know to what degree a SA can practice while under protocol. Could this be a case of giving him practice reps in hopes of him being cleared for play before Saturday?
We’ll see. Thursday seems late in the week for Smith to say what he is quoted as saying if there was a serious chance that Conor would be available.
Giving practice reps to a kid who can’t play sounds like a Riley idea.
Beav VB up 2-0 to UCLA and lose in 5. Have a match point in set 4 and have a good server lob it over in the classic play not to lose fashion. Not surprising, they lost that point and the set.
Riley is coaching volleyball now? Who knew?
I only pay attention to womens beach volleyball….for the competition and stuff.
There’s competition?!?
Xavier Crawford must feel right at home at CMU, they’re 1-8, actually that’s worse considering the competition they play! I came across their game on my ESPN stream. Haven’t seen him or CH yet, but they are losing to another directional school.
Maybe Hall can be interim HC again!
Good point! I think CMU has a history of being pretty decent in the MAC, so a one win season probably isn’t playing well. Their QB is awful, I don’t think he’s completed a pass yet.
WBB: Zack Lassiter points out that some outfit named “High Post Hoops” did an anonymous survey of 235 Div 1 coaches. They named Rueck as the #1 Most Underrated coach in the country.
FWIW they also named Hebard of nikegon as the most underrated player: Ionescu and Sabally came out in the top 3 as who’d be picked with the goal of winning a national championship before they graduate. Civil War WBB will be epic this year!

Why did the Beav’s leave their hideous black uniforms in Columbus and why did Ohio State decide to wear them?
Those unis are not working, they look like shit, as does the team. Down 21-16 to Nebraska at halftime. Thanks, Urban. Now, we have to listen to Husker Nation talk about how it’s just a matter of time before Frost gets the team to the playoffs. Of course, they don’t realize Martinez will get injured again since him running the ball seems to be their offense.
They are playing like our Beavs!
“Now, we have to listen to Husker Nation talk about how it’s just a matter of time before Frost gets the team to the playoffs.”
Which will be even more hysterically funny when the huskers never achieve the 9-6 they had with Bo.
OSU should have gone with white in the uni combo tonight…the all orange just does not work, especially on tv. Maybe black/white/black w/Benny helmet or white/orange/white…
With open toe high heel cleats.
Might improve Choukair’s kicking..
I turned on the TV to find out we were playing Nebraska today.
Wtf?
They’re wearing our helmets and unis. The only thing different is that they have white piping on the numbers.
Thanks, Nike.
Nike’s “paper dolls” strategy: Ducks > NCAA > NFL (including absurd “color rush”).
Aquino ran out during warm-ups. Looks to be ok to play.

I watched the football in 60 of the CU game.
On further review, the Buffs basically handed that one to us with penalties and dropped passes. The victory for us was that individualnefforts from JJ, Hernandez and Hosgins melts us in he game and Luton got hit in the 4th. Luton was still not very accurate, but he did make good decisions. It just felt like the he stars aligned in that one.
I have a hard time believing they’re going to align again. It’s going to take legitimate improvement or an abysmal USC performance for us to win again.
Hosgins be da man!
If the offensive line protects Luton and the d can play somewhat decent I think the beavs could have a chance in a close one. However I think big plays from the Trojans offense will be the killer.
Ohio State looks like they’re wearing our uniforms. Might explain their crap play!
And then I scroll up :P
That is an excellent observation!
They deserve to lose just for not wearing their iconic uniforms.
PHIL STEELE REPORT:
#90 USC Trojans @ #103 Oregon State Beavers, 11/3/2018
While the Beavers are just 9-61-4 all-time against USC, they have won 3 of the last 4 in Corvallis. LY the Trojans jumped out to a 21-3 HT lead and never looked back in the 38-10 win (512-319 yds) but were -33 and are 12-4 SU in the series since 1997 but 7-9 ATS. Helton is 5-2 ATS as an AF. The past 2 years at Corvallis has been anything but positive however with the Beavers’ lone victories coming against FCS teams. Despite those issues in front of their home fans, they were able to deliver a surprising comeback OT victory LW in Boulder (trailed 31-3 3Q) while ending their 22-game road losing streak in the process. USC has injuries plaguing them on both sides of the ball (rFr QB Sears 20-28- 235-2-0 in 1st start), and they lost for the first time at home under Helton (now 18-1). OSU has lost their 3 Pac 12 home games by 27.3 ppg and QB Daniels is probable and USC is off a loss.

Really??……………….wonder when Mr. Steele did his analysis.
Golly, I can’t imagine!
A few things:
Colorado had to work to lose last week.
Colorado is just not that good.
SC has a week to plan for Luton. They will flush him out make him move around. (Which he can’t)
Luton won’t survive the first half. So its the Colletto show again.
SC wants to play well to support Helton.
Better athletes beat lesser athletes.
A so-so SC team wins 42-21. PBH out.
GA going off the wagon tonight
