  1. This game will illustrate just how far behind the Beavs really are. A mediocre Oregon team will make it look easy as they methodically dismantle the scrappy slow little Beavs. The final score will look closer than the actual game. Ducks win 38-24.

  2. I’ll be the wet blanket of reality this morning.

Even if the offensive game plan is perfect the ducks will run the ball and score on every possession. The only possible wild card is if Morris and Reichner are both healthy and play out of their minds maybe they only score on 3/4 of their possessions.

    Ducks by 3 touchdowns.

    • All Oregon really has to do is take away the run and let the Beavers otherwise be themselves.

However, UO has not been good at stopping the run, and I think Smith is likely the better coach in this game. Throw in home field and you have some hope that Beavers can make it a game and maybe win.

  3. Luton will be forced to make throws and not get sacked. Even with Jefferson being so good, the box will be stacked and Luton either balls out or gets sacked/turns the ball over too many times. I agree with WFO, Ducks should score every posession and unfortunately we will not be able to match them.

X factor will be the weather. If some plays go our way like a fumble or a pick we will have to capitalize. I think Smitty will throw some trick plays in there but it won’t be enough.

    42-17 U of Blow

  4. Heart: Beavs control the clock with the running game and Herbert melts like sherbert.
Mind: Beavs score a few but the secondary gets scorched worse than the turkey on Xmas Vacation.

  5. OT: If you guys think watching the CW loss is bad, I have to watch the Iowa Nebraska game with my Husker brother. All kinds of fun facts I don’t care about. You guys interested in the official Nebraska school color on the Pantone scale? Just found out!
Please god let these next three hours to go by fast and end with an Iowa win.
    Go Beavs.

  6. Jefferson runs for over 150 yards. We benefit from a couple turnovers and the D gets a couple key stops in the 2nd half. Luton plays an efficient game and the fans storm the field when it’s over.

    • Hallelujah Reverend! [overhead hand clap!]

I think Jefferson needs a 200+ and 3 TD+ game…..seems unlikely the Ducks won’t score quite a few points against the Beaver D.

  7. Read a blurb that Morris will just be on special teams, so there goes that fantasy of him being a force on defense. Reichner is slowly getting better and will apparently get more snaps. The defense is just so damn slow, I don’t know how they stop the Quacks enough to make a difference? I just hope it’s a game, last year was brutal.

  8. If the line protects well and opens some holes and then the d can get pressure like they did last week I think they have a real chance. Double mitchell.

    • Yeah, doubling Mitchell would be the right coaching move. So you can be sure they’ll put a slow 5’8″ Dback on him and give a nice 10 yard cushion. He’ll be wide open the entire game.

  9. Is Blount available for today’s game? He’d be the guy to go with. With today’s weather…..he could start the game, keep it close, then Luton can come in and do his comeback thing.

    47-27 Eugene Emeralds

  10. Least interesting Civil War in quite awhile. I won’t be able to watch so keep those updates flowing. I prefer to read the game thread on AB vs following on espn gametracker.
    GoBeavs

    • Word from Mama M; Nicebeaver – whadya think?
BREAKING COMMITMENT: #BeaverNation #CivilWar starts with a commitment from OT @RobinV58. Big commit for @CoachMichalak as he builds for the future.
(Diablo Valley Junior College offensive tackle Robin Vanderlaan )

      • Who was the last JC OLineman to actually make a meaningful contrubution for a Beavs team? I really don’t know. Jc OL and the Beavs don’t have a good track record together.

        • Part of that is the JC LInemen they are recruiting. When is the last time we landed one with any legit D1 offers? If we actually got a guy who other teams wanted (i.e. a guy who is good) we’d probably have a better track record. Haven’t watched his film, but on the surface this looks like another wasted scholie.

  11. Per ohiobeav in the last thread:

If Herbert gets dumped a couple of times, he’ll start thinking about his millions on the table for the draft. Beavs D needs to come after Herbert early, even late. Ducks run game hasn’t been reliable like the past, and they lean on Herbert to make big plays.

  12. So how long does JS stick with Tibesar? Defense is historically bad. I think he needs another year, but if there’s marginal improvement or less, think you gotta move on.

  13. is McGiven back as OC?

Remember when GA was convinced they couldn’t run inside against Utah even with Nall, so the passed all day and lost anyway?

I think the O-line is better thinking run-block. So help them and call running plays. Beavs have willingly abandoned their main strength for fool’s gold between the 30’s. Pretty much game over if the Beavs don’t shift away from Luton as Mannion clone.

  14. Beaver D is beyond atrocious. Scott Barnes better force Smith’s hand and start searching nation wide for a real DC. This defense is probably worse than 85% or more of D2 defenses. They are that horrible.

  15. Mike Parker is hideous. Monotone, mentally wandering during the actual plays. Defeated. Listening to him with the chainsaws in the background is near insufferable. Get him out of here.

  16. Beau Baldwin was highly expected to bring Aaron Best as his OC if he got the OSU job as many were hoping. Best this since was named Big Sky Co-Head Coach of the year. Compared to Lindgren Best doesn’t stray from his gameplan as much or get too pass happy. That would have been helpful. Can’t imagine a worst D then OSU’s current D.

All in all, think OSU would be a bit more consistent with one more win vs Nevada had Baldwin got the job with an offense that still was capable but with a better defense as I think Baldwin would have found a better DC and would definitely not put up with Chokeair making 50% or less of his kicks.

    • It wouldn’t matter if Pete Carroll was the coach. This team is deplete of talent on the defensive side of the ball. Rewatched the 2013 CW on Pac12 earlier and the talent on D was a night and day difference. Future pros in Steven Nelson, Ryan Murphy, DJ Alexander, Scott Chrichton, Dylan Wynn and Obum (playing WR still I believe). Results are the same but this staff doesn’t have the same talent to work with. Riley certainly developed a roster, he just couldn’t win enough with it.

    • I think we can be thankful that BB is at Cal, making their offense not super impressive. Lindgren laid an egg today, but generally he’s been better than that.

The D took a hit from last year in losing 4 Sr linemen and 4 of the top 6 tacklers from 2017 to graduation or injury for most/all of the season. There were a lot of young/raw guys making strides as the season progressed; the underclassmen linebackers as a group showed some promise. Have to wonder where choukair will be next season though, that inconsistency won’t cut it in close games.

  17. That’s a back-breaker right there.

(Also, why the heck are we not attacking the edges more? We keep throwing Jefferson up the middle over and over again).

  18. Two things :

1: Nice reminder why Colletto isn’t the starting quarterback.

2: Jefferson visibly frustrated when he was pulled and Colletto is sent in. That’s not good.

  19. Frustrating because it should be 21-13 and still a game. Anyone else think that was weird that the Ducks didn’t go for the kill with 40 seconds left? Be nice if it somehow bites them in the ass.

  20. What I think kills me the most about this game so far is that the Ducks aren’t even particularly good.

It’s just that our offensive playcalling (and our defense at the start) have been utterly dumpster fire-tier.

  21. Defense just needs to sell out almost entirely to stop the run. Keep one or two guys back there just to make sure there’s something to stop the pass, but have everyone else sell out to stop the run, or get a sack.

  22. I could accept losing if it was a matter of us running the ball, but losing because of Herbert’s brilliance or something like that.

I absolutely cannot accept losing because our offensive coaching staff decided to turn the game into a NFL draft stock-raising exercise for Jake Luton (it’s the only explanation I can think of for why we tried that trick play, plus still chucking the ball despite the weather conditions), and completely abandoned any pretense of offensive common-sense.

We’re going to end up being in another 28 years of darkness, followed by getting into another abusive relationship with Mike Riley Jr, aren’t we?

  23. Game review:
First 3 possessions were pass heavy
Chokair misses FG after a decent drive
Colletto is asked to pass on goal line instead of run, int in end zone
Herbert goes out at halftime with injury and D gives up 200 yds rushing in 2nd half
Beavs score momentum TD and Chokair misses extra pt
Horrific trick play in driving rain, Jefferson hadn’t touched the ball in 2nd half yet

I think JS thought he was coaching against the Chip Kelly Ducks and got stuck overthunking the entire gameplan.

    F- for staff
    F- for defense
    F for offense

  24. Wow everyone is picking up on that trick play fail attempt networks and Twitter accounts. It’s the perfect symbol for what we are last, this, and next season.

Ending the season as the laughing stock of college football and getting blasted at home to our “rivals” team who kicks our ass every year (well 10 times out of 11)

This has to be the low point of our existence since Riley took over in the 90’s. Our athletic department is pathetically inept at every sport actual people like.

    • Go back to Dicks Unlimited. You just started posting here this week and show up again in the 4th quarter. Enjoy Hellfrich 2.0 while you can.

    • And the perfect symbol for what you guys always were was the 2013 hoe game against Cal, when everyone but a bunch of drunk frat brats left at halftime. Those ass-hats massed in the empty seats behind the Cal bench, screaming lewd and crude statements that can only denote self-hatred, trying to get a rise out of the team.

And security did nothing about it.

Perfect fucking symbol for all time.

  25. At they’ve solidified the worst defense in Pac 12 history. Looks like we’d need a bowl game to make it the worst in ncaa history.

  26. I cannot believe Wilson saying that, by and large, Lindgren has called a good game today!

For the season, yes pretty good, but not for today.

  27. What the fuck has happened? Isn’t their some kind of coaching hell MR and GA should be serving in, instead of playing good old boy network grab ass with their buddies and still collecting paychecks?

  28. What I don’t understand with Beaver football is what happened between 2016 and 2017? The ’16 team was very close to five or six wins, but nothing was built off of that improvement. How can Smith possibly attract difference makers on the defensive and offensive lines with this current shit show? .

  29. How many senior starters? 4? I think this is the bottom. It just hurts more when the offense played one of their worst games at home against the ducks. I think the defense has been getting better. The kicker has not.

    • I hope the group can improve. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a group of shittier tacklers and also I don’t know that speed improves over a year or two. They rarely rally to the ball, it’s usually one or two guys in space that inevitably miss the tackle.

      • Worst tackling I’ve seen since the 2016 ducks. Then they canned their shitty DC and linebackers coach and it’s been steadily uphill since then.

        Hmmmmmmmm….

    • Beavs got two sacks (allowed ZERO) and forced 4 punts, if the O would have performed to the level of several games earlier this year this would have been a game decided by a TD or less.

And, anyone check the interception comparison? Three today, total for the previous 11 games – SIX

          • Dude. Seriously. I’m with the duck trolls on this one. After Herbert went out and their useless backup came in and EVERYBODY IN THE STATE knew they were going to run the ball, they ran it ELEVEN FUCKING TIMES IN A ROW for a touchdown.

The defense is hot fucking garbage and if JS doesn’t announce wholesale changes to the defensive staff he’s officially a gutless bitch.

    • I don’t know that you can build around a safety. The past two seasons the leading tackler has been a safety and we’ve seen the results of that.

    • McCartan, Rashed, Dunn, Hayes, Irvine, J.Moore. Not “a single player” but a group with promise.

Oh, and an Elu minus 40 pounds!

EDIT/ADD, thanks to Jim Wilson on postgame, Tago and Reichner.

    • Quite a few true freshman got playing time on defense. That usually only happens when they are very very good or your team is short handed. Give them a year and they will be better. I don’t know if our DC is good or bad, I think it will take another year to really know. I don’t think any DC could have made much of a difference this year. We just did not have enough mature bodies on defense.

  30. So why aren’t we watching the women’s game tonight. Top 15matchup with south Carolina tonight. Lady dicks vs a tight beaver defense. No pleasure for anyone…

  31. Players on D that seem to have some game sense:
McCartan, Tomalieua, Tufaga, Dunn, Grant: These guys need to grow up some and they seemed to be the few playmakers. Way too many arm tackles and guys watching from a step behind the action all year long.

  32. Managed to sneak away for a few minutes from a visit with in-laws today to catch a few plays of the civil war. Tuned in just in time to see a drive killed by a Colletto jump pass into duck hands in the endzone. Was all I needed to see. Hanging with the in-laws was a huge upgrade over missing the game.
Sadly, it looked like the Beavs overthought things when they could have just run it for a couple of yards for the score. Trying too hard to be cute

      • You sure it wasn’t the previous play that he failed to score on that he was upset about? Seems out of character for the true freshman to suddenly challenge the coach’s call in the biggest game of the year.

          • And he was right. First play call was garbage run up the gut that hadn’t worked all day. Then bring in the 3rd string quarterback for some stupid fucking hokey trickey dickey bullshit.

          • You just acknowledged the run up the middle hadn’t worked all day. Hence the attempt to do something different. So Jefferson was pissed they didn’t run him up the middle again or is he all of the sudden a scat back that was going to run outside? Let me know what your positive about.

          • I’m positive that Jefferson was rightly pissed about the play calling/piss poor execution as he was shaking his head after the play when he was walking back to the backfield to line back up. Then he looked to the sideline for the next play and his body language was obvious when he was called off.

You can’t be serious about Jefferson not being effective on the edge. Probably 3/4 of his long plays this season have been off the edge.

          • Maybe they should just bench Jefferson and make Colletto the starting tailback. Every time they get near the end zone they bench the guy who usually got them there.

          • The sweep wasn’t working. Running in the 1 gap wasn’t working, when it was obvious.

Running off tackle worked just about every time they did it, which was maybe five times.

Running in the 1 did work sometimes. But when it was obvious, it didn’t. 9 needs to watch some tape. There’s a tell in there… beyond the poor scheme.

          • Colletto replaced Luton not Jefferson. Pierce replaced Jefferson. Not his fault but Jefferson had very little success running the ball today. I assume then you are upset that Luton wasn’t left in to run zone read on the goal line?

          • Ah, right.

The guy who goes in and Jefferson comes out, has what, five red zone rushing touchdowns?

Yeah he replaced Luton. Do you even watch these games?

          • Jack, exactly. This reminded me of Riley/Langs play calling when they thought they were going to outsmart the defense by not doing the only thing that was successful all year. Run the shit that works until they make you stop running it. Never even tried.

          • WFO. This is a tough argument to have but I suggest you watch some football with your husband tomorrow and ask him to explain the difference between a quarterback and a tailback and why sometimes the quarterback keeps the ball on the zone read.

    • Correct. It is streamed on a paysite:
      https://bdglobal.inplayer.com/vancouver/index.html

Beavs likely to face #1 Notre Dame if they win tonight. ND is leading by 24 with less than 5 min to go. Tourney is in BC, Canada, not sure if that impacts the lack of availbility of a free stream.

I don’t plan to go to the paysite, Jon Warren is doing a fair job on the KEJO broadcast. Link posted above.

ANGRY: you planning a post for evaluation of the entire FB season? One could argue that the very worst overall performance for the season was today.

  33. Fucking pathetic. First non-sellout ive ever seen at the civil war. Atmosphere was horrible. Team is a joke, we should be playing WOU and Oregon Tech.

I tried to get a fucking car flag to put on my rig on the way down. No store even fucking has them.

The fucking logo is fucking shit. Kill it now.

Fire that fat headed AD Barnes now.

  34. Am I mistaken, or does OSU have 10 women’s sports teams but only 7 men’s? If you go to the OSU athletics site and hover on “sports”, that’s what’s listed. Isn’t that some sort of Title IX violation or something?

  35. I think a lot of people have unrealistic expectations for this team with the huge lack of talent. You can’t be calling for coaching changes until we see what they can do with a full team of D1 athletes. I agree the game plan for the CW was bad. I feel like JS was trying to make it the Luton show since it’s likely his last game. But people created their own drama by thinking this team had a snowball’s chance in hell against the Ducks this year.

    • Well the Ducks suck this year and they have a terrible HC, so they had a chance with a good game plan. They had a bad game plan and didn’t even execute that.

    • Agree with much of what you say. I find it hard to believe that Smith made an intentional decision to make it the Luton show; very disappointing if that is a fact.

Sometimes the W/L isn’t the whole story for fans reactions (their own drama). For example, Riley’s use of TO’s and lack of competitive fire or a 2 minute O (along with other things) was as responsible for his exit as was his W/L record.

The disappointment for many today isn’t because of a mistaken feeling that “this team had a snowball’s chance in hell against the ducks this year”. It’s because this game should have been MUCH closer if the Beavs had played O and SpTm as they’ve shown they can. It’s because the play calling didn’t measure up. Etc.

I think the drama was created by thinking the team/coaches would perform more like they’ve already shown they can: by expecting that they’d not take a step back in the CW.

      • Yeah, I understand the Beavs have executed much better in other games this year, but I honestly haven’t seen them do anything on both sides of the ball that made me think they could beat the Ducks. Angry says the Ducks suck this year, but I assume he mesns relative to the Chip Kelly era. They certainly are not at the same level of suck as the Beavers.

    • In my mind, the challenge for Smith and staff is going to be if they can ever get a “full team of D1 athletes”. I’ll go one step further and say they need at least 40 Power 5 athletes. Beating out the likes of Hawaii and Eastern Michigan for talent won’t get the job done. Smith gets his five years for sure, but I’m skeptical that he will get there.

  36. Washington is on the verge of beating Washington State. We will have two 3-loss teams playing for the PAC-12 Championship.

The PAC-12 is a dumpster fire, and we are the sewage at the bottom of that dumpster. Good night.

    • I’m not sure why that’s a dumpster fire. Isn’t that how it should be? It just means the competition level is more even throughout the conference rather than having 1 or 2 teams that just dominate the rest of the conference.

      • It’s more like every team is almost uniformly terrible. Washington got smacked around by an Auburn team that ended up going 7-4 (soon to be 5, after tomorrow).

Does anyone really expect the majority of PAC-12 teams to win their bowl games (of those who made it, anyway)? I sure don’t.

  37. Thought this was sort of interesting………Hughes-Murray was quoted as saying the coaches told the defense that the game plan wasn’t going to change even with Herbert out for the second half. They were still keeping five or six in the box. I know the talent is lacking, but I’m starting to wonder about Tibesar. He did understand that Burmeister is one of worse QB’s in the P-12, right?

  38. I haven’t ever followed South Carolina sports. Do they refer to their women’s teams as Gamecocks too? Or do they switch it up to Gamehens?

    • Just looked it up. I wasn’t far off.

Why do schools feel they have to only modify women’s teams? Why do they have to be the Lady Vols? Why don’t they also call the football team the Gentleman Vols with every mention? I was reminded of this dumb language when I used it myself describing spare time as extra.

Edit: So I google the dumbness, and I get this

“It was just the natural term to differentiate between men’s and women’s sports,”

      Why?

Isn’t there something else that might differentiate men’s and women’s sports?

If we think hard enough, we might come up with that differential.

      • Ahhh, language righteousness. And what are the other languages doing about this? You know, the majority of world languages that like, ummm, assign gender to pretty much every word.

        • My room is messy, but look, lots of people I know don’t clean their room either…

France actually has a government department dedicated to French; they constantly make changes all the time.

I’m confident if we were to look at linguistic studies going on in the majority of world languages, you would find studies or concern in this very topic.

Unless of course, the language doesnt assign gender construction, of which there are several major examples. =)

Not to overblow Jack’s point, but I’ve found it curious when comparisons like this are made.

I mean, aren’t we taught culturally that when you compare yourself to others, look rather to those examples that are better?

          • I’m mostly concerned with accuracy. What are we teaching our kids about speaking English these days? Have they always been so ridiculous? Why don’t we just get it right for the sake of being able to communicate in what is ostensibly the dominant language in an increasingly nationalistic country?

I would think that getting the language correct should be overwhelmingly praised by anyone with any local or nationalistic pride.

            But no.

We get pissy cognitive dissonance instead.

        • Your ignorance piqued my interest. So, in my own ignorant hour or so of studying linguistics, I discovered a lot of interesting things about phallocentric language. There’s too much to really digest in such a short time, which is why there’s a whole field of study for you to willfully dismiss.

Suffice it to say that where religion is important, so is phallocentric culture and language. Farsi was gender neutral until Islam took over and introduced elements of phallocentricity ingrained in Arabic. Arabic and Hebrew are highly phallocentric languages. It’s so bad in Hebrew that when they post jobs they have to have a byline inviting women to also apply. Most Arabic-speaking countries don’t even care about women, so they don’t bother. But it’s interesting that Hebrew won’t change for the sake of efficiency. That’s because of fundamentalism in the culture.

Interestingly, the Malay language is the most phallocentric I could find. They don’t even have female associations in language. They have some third person noun associations having to do with prostitution. But that’s about it.

Hindi is confusing. The language is phallocentric, but it’s done in such a way so as to comply with religious associations. So ferocity, intelligence, wisdom, strength, etc., are assigned genders according to the gender of the gods most associated with those traits. To be sure, most of the language itself is phallocentric. But I found it interesting that a man must be associated with a female trait in order to be considered intelligent.

In American English, doing this would be a pejorative worthy of a really dumb third-grader. But in Hindi, it’s just accepted.

  39. What are the thoughts here on Jake Luton petitioning the NCAA for a medical hardship waiver and returning next fall for a sixth year? He could back up Gebbia. Not the worst thing in the world. Maybe compete outright for the start at QB.

    • I’ve seen enough of Jake over the last two years that it is probably time to cut him loose so he can pursue other endeavors. Probably a great kid, but as a QB, there was just no consistency there. I am sure that there was a reason that he was overlooked and passed on in the recruiting process coming out of M-P as a senior. So, good Luke Jake with your future and thanks for the memories!
