  1. I’d take a shot on that 4-star grad transfer from TN. I mean why not? Immediate playing time, other schools actually wanted him at some point, and TN is a much better football school than OSU.

    • Seems to be the type of player we’re looking the hardest to bring in to fill out our class. Grad transfer DE candidates they’re at least evaluating appear to be Jordan Allen out of Tennessee, Chazmyn Turner from Purdue and Zach Abercrumbia out of Rice. None have OSU offers yet but all 3 have recently been added to the NCAA transfer portal. I’d imagine more movement will happen as our staff returns from their holiday breaks, and we won’t be the only team looking at these players.

      • I don’t think Allen is a grad transfer. He’s listed as a redshirt sophomore, which would mean he’d only have one season after sitting. Would be a waste of a spot. A player out of high school could use that spot to redshirt and be a player for the next 4 years after.

        • Seeing on the Tennessee message boards that Allen may be transferring to be closer to his sick mother. Possible transfer waiver?

        • That assumes that spot goes to a high school player that would actually help.

Would you rather have 5 years of someone bad or 1 year of someone good?

Really not that complicated. If a high school kid worthy of the scholarship were out there I’m sure OSU would be offering it to them.

        • Might not be a grad transfer, but not impossible. Marcus McMaryion was a grad transfer before his junior season.
I saw the rumors of it being for family reasons like AK mentioned below. Not sure where mom lives, but if she’s in their hometown of Fairfield, CA, I’m not sure if OSU would be considered close enough geographically for a family hardship waiver, which the NCAA handles on a case by case basis.

I dont think OSU is going after guys who have to sit 1 year. They’re going after
guys who can play immediately next year at DE.

        • YoungOSU is right. If we had someone to fill that slot with then we should…that player would have to be recruited by a school other than Wyoming or Utah State. If not, take a TN transfer, even if for a year. Ideally more goes into the scouting and recruiting than that and your HC can identify and recruit the better player, but based on pedigree alone you do that.

  2. It looks like Allen has been a disappointment for Tenn, six tackles all season. Maybe understandable if his Mom has been sick. There are articles about her various illnesses.

Interesting, he started with a full ride scholarship to Cal-Davis and left to go to a JC to get noticed by a FBS school. If he has that much raw talent, he might be worth a look. Where ever he goes will be his fourth school.

    • I suspect Zach Abercrumbia is the primary DE target right now.
Had a pretty impressive offer sheet out of highschool and local media covering Rice named him the team’s Defensive POY last year. Of the 3 candidates, he feels like the safest bet if you need a guy to come in and contribute right away, while also having a shot at actually landing the guy.
Of course things change quickly, but right now I’d keep an eye on him.

      https://247sports.com/Player/Zach-Abercrumbia-28087/high-school-46528/

        • If he’s in the transfer database, he must have a reason he wants to try another team. Our coaching staff’s job is to find out that reason and make sure it matches up with what we can offer. That’s the current state of things

  3. Wow. This relationship may not last long; USC’s new OC Kingsbury to interview for several NFL jobs in the coming days…

“New USC offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury will interview for multiple NFL head coaching jobs in the coming days, creating a nervous new year for Trojans head coach Clay Helton and the USC fan base.”

    https://www.latimes.com/sports/

I understand its a profession, but if you’re USC how do you trust the guy going forward, assuming he isn’t offered/doesn’t take an NFL job?

  4. Interesting, the streak of Duck juniors staying has ended. Dillon Mitchell is getting the hell out of Nikeland. Ducks are going to be exciting on offense next year! What is Herbert doing?

    • Hole’s OC sucks so fucking bad. It’s hilarious, their delusional fanbase is spouting “natty!” because Herbert is coming back. Dipshits, he’s still going to have one receiver to throw to and a clueless OC.

          • 9-4 is good? Helfrich was 11-2 in his first year, and most consider him a bad coach. He was actually decent. MC is much much worse.

The reason he and Taggart both focused so hard on recruiting (and paying guys) is to mask their coaching deficiency.

          • Helfrich WAS a bad coach. Maybe you slept through that year he was fired? That team was undisciplined, horrible on defense thanks to the ‘promote from within’ model, and got bailed out with decent FCS transfers at quarterback thanks to no real succession planning. He was 11-2 in his first year because of the team Chip Kelly left behind and a great quarterback. Other than that, he showed his complete ineptitude to manage the team or games, and always had the same excuse in the press conference “that’s on me and we need to clean this up”. In the meantime that final year had nearly the worst defense in FBS.

I think you’re putting too much weight on MC’s time at Florida International and the record. In between there and Oregon he only spent 4 years under Nick Saban, and one would think that will count for something. We’ll see next year how bad of a coach MC really is, probably in that first game against a quality opponent.

          • Yes, throw out all of the years of terrible coaching results and only focus on the years he ascending way up the ranks as an OL coach under Saban. Forget that anybody could coach OL for Bama and they’d still be successful.

Helf took a team with a Heisman level QB and mediocre defense to the National title game in his first year. MC took a team with a Heasman level QB and a better defense to 8-4, with a schedule which should have warranted a 10-2 season at worst. Oh, and the Hesiman level qb(who Helfrich recruited) regressed in all facets during that time. But yeah, MC is a stellar coach because he recruits well.

Why wait till next year to see how bad MC is? Didnt you watch oregon forget to show up against Arizona and WSU this year? Or that thrilling 7 pt bowl game outing, if you need a more recent example? Were those oppinents not quality enough to build a sample?

          • 4 gifted wins really. 3 bullshit ooc opponents and Michigan St. holder being a dong. Hard kick in the wind, but still MSU had a chance to win in the last play.

          • Okay, man. I tried to warn you guys about Slick Willie on DAY ONE, too.

Granted, GA fooled me, so I’m not perfect, but my track record in spotting frauds is pretty damn good.

          • It’s the quality by association thing we all try to do when there’s a new coach. Slick Willy was Harb’s buddy so he must great (and you guys fucking LOVED that dude til he bailed), Cristobal worked for Saban so he must be great, JS worked for Peterson so he must be great. We all do it.

The difference is that Saban would never hire a guy like Arroyo to run his offense. His resume sucks and the product on the field reflects his suck.

          • This thread is hilarious. Helfrich was such a great coach that he led the Ducks to their worst record in 25 years. It’s even more hilarious that a 9-4 record is considered by Beaver fans to not be any good.

FINE, the jury is still out on Cristobal. The offense does suck but the defense continues to improve. Someone pointed out the Redbox Bowl performance. The Duck offense was not good, but credit a bit to Michigan State’s defense. The Ducks primary strength on offense is the run game and MSU had a good game plan to stop it. A whole bunch of could of, should of, would of; receivers dropped a bunch of passes too.

It’s funny reading these boards some times. You all talk about this player and that player and who they worked with, who coached them, etc. etc. Then you want to pretend like coaching and mentoring doesn’t matter in the case of MC and Nick Saban.

          • I think the point most were making was 9-4 in a season when the deck was stacked in your favor schedule and talent wise, is not impressive.

Heisman candidate QB. 7 home games. 3 gimme non-con games. 4 losses to middle of the road Pac teams. 3 more near losses (1 missed kick away from losing to UW, 1 play away from losing to ASU and MSU) Pissed away a big lead vs Stanford at home. And you even had the oregon state gimmee to help pad the stats.

There’s a reason Saban never promoted MC to an OC or Co-OC position and let him leave for oregon. He wasn’t a good coach and Alabama recruits itself. You’d think a team would fall off in recruiting if they lost their ace recruiter, yet Alabama keeps pulling in the talent without Mario.

          • It’s not just that. If you watch him in games he’s over matched in the X/O facet and makes poor decisions. He can out athlete some teams because of the recruits, and that’s why he’s focusing on recruiting…so he can continue to be a hack coach yet his players bail him out. It’s right out of the Taggart playbook.

          • Lol “the Taggart playbook”. Makes about as much sense as that civil war score prediction. And no one said 9-4 was an impressive season; the only point being made is it isn’t a bad one.

Congrats Angry, you were able to “predict” that Slick Willie was a snake oil salesman, was really no shock to anyone he bailed for the FSU job. Even a blind beaver can find a log once in a while.

          • What doesn’t make sense? All hat, no cattle. Called it day one, to the same blowback from all Duck fans and Canzano who claimed “Taggart won the press conference”.

Really this translates to: “we don’t like that you don’t like our coach.” You guys want an echo chamber to confirm your decisions are good. When they are, I’ll let you know. Or you might see it because I’ll get nervous about Oregon.

          • The stats from that article that was posted in the last thread are telling. Guys like Taggart and Cristobal want the hype from recruiting so they offer 350 kids before the early signing period. Guys like Peterson and Leach know exactly what they’re looking for and they make 1/3 of the offers, they get guys that fir what they want to do(because they actually know what they’re trying to do) and consistently perform above what the simpletons would think based on their recruiting rankings.

          • Here is the link, as originally posted by ObjCritic:
            https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/uw-husky-football/really-impressive-thing-about-chris-petersens-rising-recruiting-classes-at-uw-he-does-it-with-so-few-actual-offers-to-athletes/

I was surprised there was no reaction when the pertinent section was highlighted here, guess it made sense to most…and there was no duck_mouth around to stir things.

            From the link:

But what’s nuts is the Huskies only offered 91 scholarships, which was the third lowest among Power 5 schools.
The average number of offers was 232. Tennessee made 440, five other schools made over 400, and Oregon led the Pac-12 with 335.
For many programs, the idea is to throw any offer out there and see if it generates enthusiasm among players.

        • saw the following on Oregon live this week….oregon beat 4 teams with winning records: CAL 8-6, WA 12-4, and yep other pac12 teams at 7-6. Dux SOS 127th, cumulative record of oppony 83-87. 7 home games with Stanford, wash, Asu at home. Mich state 126 0ranked offense in country. So 9-4 looks good but once you dig into the details, it was an ultra soft schedule. Four straight home games to start the season. Finally, only 5-4 in a very weak conference so that tells you the ducks were able to beat bad teams and just slightly above average against more competitive teams. I think the same poster described the 9-4 and smoke and mirrors. Hard to disagree with that.

          • A forgettable team in a forgettable PAC season.

Cristobal will probably change up the OC situation somehow. He’s getting too much criticism about it and its Herbert’s last year. But the way he wants to play and win is not acceptable to the fan base focused on the Chip Kelly zenith. Maybe he’ll overcompensate and start throwing too much.

  5. What’s the deal with oregon and oregon state’s basketball teams losing players? One of the ducks 4* sophs, Agu Kigab who has been out with an “ankle injury”, has transferred out of the program. Their fans are starting to worry that this loss along with Bol Bol being out and Kenny Wooten’s broken jaw, might cause them to miss the NCAA tournament this year….lololol. ya think?

      • Eggers, for one, doesn’t seem to think they’ll be playing in March:

Oregon, the preseason pick to win the Pac-12, is going to be hard-pressed to have a winning conference record.
Oregon State, meanwhile, has had its four losses come by a total of 16 points. The Beavers have been disappointing down the stretch of close games.

From a wide ranging piece from Eggers in which he discusses, among other things, Herbert’s decision to forego NFL draft.

        https://pamplinmedia.com/pt/12-sports/415947-318116-on-lillard-curry-stotts-mlb-etc

BTW Basketball (mens) CW this Saturday

        • That article shows just how much Eggers is required to cover, working for a smaller newspaper like the Tribune. If he were at the Oregonian, he’s only be covering the Blazers, or the Beavers, or the Ducks, but here he has input on MLB to PDX, Blazers, oregon and oregon state football, oregon and oregon state men/women’s basketball, Winterhawks, Beaver baseball and some other NCAAF and NBA side notes. And somehow he found time to write his JailBlazers book, which I’ve been reading lately(recommended for anybody who followed the team back then)

          • Not only does Eggers cover a wide range of topics, he goes in depth. His work on the Luke Heimlich case is just one example.

I’m not sure if he has a staff (doubt it) or is just an efficient researcher. His connection to the gum chewer has been joked about, but his stature as a journalist is probably what gets him “inside” dope and indepth interviews. Anyway, he is worth reading.

EDIT/ADD: Right on cue, another nice piece by Eggers.
            This one on Beavs Baseball.
Indepth? Pretty much; read to learn who is, “…pound for pound, … the strongest guy on the team in the weight room.”
            https://pamplinmedia.com/pt/12-sports/415854-316611-beaver-baseball-ready-to-come-out-swinging

  6. More evidence the Beavs are in the hunt for immediate transfer help at DE, but not making much progress yet.
UCLA DE Chigozie Nnoruka announced tonight he intends to grad transfer out of UCLA. The beavrecruiting account tweeted a reply asking if he’s talked with our coaches yet, tagging Legi and Tibesar, and almost immediately coach Legi gave him a follow.

Was a starter under Mora, but last year Chip used him mainly as a reserve and opted to play younger guys. So that’s 4 guys in the recent weeks, plus James Rawls from the JC ranks. Still anyone’s guess who we land though.

    • As always, thanks for your efforts and the info you provide.
Between you, Eggers, and (occasionally) Lundeberg; we don’t need no stinkin’ pay sites! Or the whoreogonian!

      • How about a little DB coach speculation?(not mine, but it could be interesting)

Brandon Huffman last week mentioned the HC at Garfield HS(Seattle) Joey Thomas could be getting hired soon by a P5 team.

        https://mobile.twitter.com/BrandonHuffman/status/1078735797547806720

Checks several boxes in that he has local recruiting ties(Garfield has the top 2020 recruit in the West in Sav’ell Smalls currently) and he’s a former DB who originally signed with UW but transferred to Montana State after a rough beginning to his Husky career. He also doesnt appear to be a fan of the Huskies because of his brief time there. Has about 5 years of NFL experience. Downside- No NCAA coaching experience yet and has been accused of shady recruiting practices at the HS level(though never punished for anything)

Anyway, just another name to keep an eye out for as we wait to see who Smith hires. Job posting closes Jan10th(although it has already closed and been reposted 3 times now since Burns left)

        • Unfortunately, seems like the words “shady” and “recruiting” often go hand in hand. I like that he is younger and has connections.

      • and thanks to you too, OOB, for linking to Eggers and other non-pay sites. or anti ad-blocker sites. Once I put one on to keep Oregonlive from profiting from my interest in OSU sports (after the Heimlich affair) I have seen more and more sites wanting me to defuse my blocker, which I refuse to do. so, again, thanks for finding conducive links.

  7. Pretty sure Bill Walton has graduated to crack from weed.

Tonight on the Stanford/UCLA telecast he advocated UCLA should hire Barack Obama as their next head coach.

One can only hope he was not serious.

      • The first time he yells at the refs, one of them (and I could name a handful in the Pac alone who would fit this ideal) would come over and ask to see his work visa, the long form one.

And the world would look on and think, “Golly, this isn’t an extremely stupid brain wasting my time and lowering my expectations for how the rest of this game will play out.”

And then the fans will spend the rest of a losing effort yelling at the loser refs.

And it will have all been Larry Scott’s fault, because of the talent.

    • Funny, Angry tweeted about Casey likely returning the other day and was met with some fans who called bullshit.

      https://twitter.com/angrybeavs/status/1079808325410119686?s=19

The conspiracy theory is the temporary retirement by Casey was made to help give former assistant and new HC Bailey a chance to earn a little better salary and retirement situation before he rides off into the sunset and Casey resumes his role. Seems plausible and a way for the school to give Bailey a pay bump when they normally wouldn’t have had the means, especially after having to give Yeskie a significant raise last year. Let Casey take a lesser role for a spell while earning a smaller salary and pass the savings onto Bailey, who has earned it. Creative AD’ing is you ask me.

But those are all just unfounded rumors…..

      • Full disclosure, the previous publication in D1 occurred on the same day as Angry’s tweet.

The conspiracy theory is interesting, is our AD really that creative??

        • Might have even been the same source who contacted us as well as Rodgers. I dont have access to D1 and we were informed of the rumors by someone with close connections to the people involved, so they seem at least credible.

Regarding Barnes, he did get GA to walk away and leave 2 years salary on the table. Probably his single biggest positive move as an AD at OSU. We ciuld still have GA as our coach today, which is scary.

          • I don’t have a subscription to D1 either..
FWIW, some of the D1 stuff isn’t behind a paywall. The Rogers prediction about Casey’s return falls in that category.

Good point about Barnes/Andersen; we may never know if there was so much dirt on GA that a trained monkey could have gotten him to jump or if it involved a brilliant move by Barnes. Likely somewhere in between I suppose.

          • Rogers must have been reading on here about Casey returning. We have been on it for awhile. I’ve got multiple sources discussing he will return.

  8. Just looking over the D1 stuff which isn’t behind paywall. Rogers end of year “Rewind” includes, beyond the prediction of Casey’s return, a description of the ninth inning of the second game of the CWS under the heading “Favorite postseason moment”.

Worth checking out (you can’t ever get enough of that magical moment!). Hint, Rogers tries to placate hogs fans by saying,

“Grenier appeared to be the final out of the game as he popped up a ball in foul territory down the right-field line (it wasn’t an easy play). However, a couple of Hogs overran the ball and it dropped.

Yup, those are all words written by Rogers; I did add the bold………just cause.

  9. WBB:
Beavs up 13 at the half vs cougars.
Injury news: Janessa Thropay out after surgery for broken finger, Kat Tudor goes down hard in first half, straight to locker room.

    TV: PAC12

    • Gritty win from the Beavs last night. Arse holes puckered up mighty tight when Tudor went down and Wazzu went on a run after halftime. DIdn’t know how this team would respond. Thought Mik was clutch down the stretch, thought Destiny, Katie and Maddie worked their butts off, and Corosdale’s two big shots down the stretch were clutch.

Super concerned about the way Tudor went down – didn’t look like she hit anyone, and those non-contact injuries with knees can be pretty bad. Hopefully the tests come up negative for anything serious. Doubt she’ll play on Sunday.

  10. Nice Beav, saw a tweet about state 1st team OL/DL Isiah Porter from Tigard. Supposedly he is a PWO to hole. Any sense if he is a Beav target for OL?

  11. I know there’s not much enthusiasm for MBB, but if there was ever a time for WT to get a meaningful conference road win, the stars are aligned for this afternoon against the Quacks. Why do I think they will shit the bed anyway?

  12. Interesting story brewing down at USC. They signed Kliff kingsbury to be their OC, then a handful of NFL teams asked their AD for permission to interview KK for an OC or HC job, but Swann denied permission. So now KK is considering resigning and then interviewing for the NFL jobs, since his buyout is low at USC.

And in the meantime, despite all this, USC lands 2 5* WRs today. The KK news is likely to make them reconsider between now and signing day though.

Also, USC isn’t far behind oregon in class rankings now, for those who follow that stuff.

    • Foolish move on Swann’s part. You can’t prevent a guy no matter how new from trying to get a promotion. Preventing a lateral move, sure but not a promotion.

What coach would go to USC now?

    • There are many sides to this story. If you’re Kingsbury you know you’re going to get interest from nfl teams. Why agree to a contract (which means little in college football) and then want your new employer to be willing to allow you to flirt with other teams. I see why swann blocked it but am more surprised Kingsbury is already wanting to look elsewhere. Why not commit to usc for one year and see what happens. You mean the quacks can’t claim a top 5 class anymore ?? Oh the pain.

        • FFS, you live in a damn bubble that is nowhere close to reality……

          Your statement the other night….

“Every coach in his situation would interview for head coaching jobs. Doing so breaks no trust. It is what you would expect any and all people in virtually any profession to do.”

Shows the bubble you live in. But you’ve made a lot of retarded statements here so it’s not surprising.

“At last month’s NFL owners meetings in Dallas, league officials informed team executives that they now had to request permission from college athletic directors to interview college coaches. Not doing so would be considered “conduct detrimental,” and the NFL could then dock draft picks from teams, sources said.

“If permission is denied, the NFL club should respect that decision just as it would respect a similar decision from another NFL club,” the rule states in part. “NFL clubs that fail to follow these protocols may be subject to disciplinary action for conduct detrimental to the League.”

Just can’t deny that, huh? Bubble boy

          http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/25691009/usc-trojans-deny-new-york-jets-arizona-cardinals-permission-interview-kliff-kingsbury-nfl-cd

          • Not that your weird screed has anything to do with what he’s talking about, but is it also written in his contract that he can’t be fired on a whim if his unit sucks any given year?

Assistants are fungible, unless you make your program less attractive by acting like some insecure, needy loser boyfriend… the operative word being boy. It’s one thing to fight for your head coach, but blocking assistants is weak sauce.

That being said, it’s college football. There are enough meatheads with no integrity willing to take that job no matter how poorly the AD acts.

  13. Civil war is tough to watch. Bill Walton commentary, ugly court, guards over dribbling and forcing/missing contested perimeter shots. Fortunately OSU has figured out they can score inside with Kelly and Big G whenever they want. They just dont seem to want to often enough. Beavs up 9, 3 minutes before halftime

    • That court is brutal.
First Beav game I’ve watched entirely this year…it took a CW to get me interested. They look good tonight.

        • The floor would be better in person if the bowl wasn’t so friggin steep. And it’s worse on the end lines and in the upper deck. The wife is the alum there, and she hates the building as a venue.

While the sight lines are technically excellent in that you can see the court from every seat, they really suck above about row 25 because of the angle of viewing the floor and how it feels like one is further from the floor than is normal. Above 25 rows, I might as well just watch the scoreboard. The game’s usually on there.

    • 13 pt halftime lead. Ducks look lost offensively. Hope they keep that up and the Beavs don’t stop attacking the paint.
For relatively unknown guys, I really like Kelly and Big G as our bigs compared to when Drew got most of those minutes the last few years. Not as athletic but they play smarter

    • Walton IS a tough listen, but he does seemingly love him some pac nw, between his history in Portland and the liberal weed laws, I guess what’s not to like? You can at least turn the volume down…

That God damn floor though, that shit hurts the eyes…wife and daughter say they actually saw a dousche downtown wearing a bright green sweatshirt with that same ugly design, who would pay for that garbage?

Beavs look good compared to ‘the final four team’s from eugene.

      • I like Walton. Is that weird?
I’d take him over Parker. Walton doesn’t whine (he’s very positive) nor does he wreak of small town syndrome. Walton has a lot of passion.

        • I get a kick out of Walton, as well. I think it has to do with the expectations of the viewer/listener; for me, he is kinda like a cartoon character.

He certainly is “very positive”, even commented tonight that, “I’ve tried it the other way…”.

        • The last couple years, Walton has sounded like he just went to the local “things to do” kiosk and picked up some pamphlets to read out loud along with the media guide during games. I was watching Zony play, and it just sounded like he was listing restaurants and geologic formations between names like Lute Olson and Sean Elliott… and then saying he loved Tucson.

Saguaro National Park… Mica Mountain… Lute Olson, Sean Elliott… the buffalo cauliflower wings at Renee’s… Sabino Canyon… Mike Bibby, Damon Stoudamire… what’s not to love about Tucson? And I want to thank the good people at Davis Monthan for letting me tour the Boneyard… a word I will say 20 times in the next 10 minutes. It was just a surreal experience. I love Southern Arizona!

I don’t mind him, but like is a strong word.

Parker’s okay until he starts complaining about refs or the game gets out of hand. He’d do better to just start reading one of Walton’s lists at that point.

  14. De ja vue…….Beavs up 13 at the half, just like last night.
Injury report too, one official down with a leg cramp (??) in the first half.

  15. These officials are doing they’re best. Shorthanded and still doing well! It’s about time we win by 40, sweep the leg Tinkle! Step on throats!!!!

  16. First men’s game I’ve watched this year, enjoying Kelly’s play, moreso than the early exit guy from Reynolds last couple years

    • The play where the duck player took Reichle out and knocked it out of bounds and they give the ball to oregon? Wtf?
Tinkle went down with a rolled ankle and ever since momentum has shifted in oregon’s favor. Hope tinkle isnt out long

  17. We literally cannot inbound the ball now. Keep inbounding into the corner, 5 second violation followed by turnover.

Fire fucking Tinkle. I’m sick of this shit. Your only recruits are your fucking family, you don’t have a PG, and you can’t execute fundamentals like PRESS BREAKS.

      • They seem to understand that when they leave their feet, they need to pass before they come down… most of the time.

I can’t blame them for getting the ball in the corners. That’s all coaching. And before some moron wants to say, “The coach isn’t out there on the floor,” tell me why players who defy the wisdom of a coach who should and would know better get to remain on the floor.

Tinks has quicker hooks on much less egregious play, let alone play that could cost you the game… every game.

  18. Maybe between now and the next Civil War game, we can practice breaking the press!

I don’t know the team very well, but both Thompsons need to be on the bench if we’re being pressed; they almost cost us the game with bad passing and understanding of space, and it’s not like the countered those negatives with scoring, they did almost nothing positive in the last 8 minutes of the game.

Kelley and Tres are great, who else is on the team?

  19. Yeah, it was tough to watch for the last eight minutes, but a much needed win. What the hell has happened to Hollins? He looked like a baby Jordan at times last season and now he is a disaster. It’s got to be mental.

  20. Really nice to get the win, but next practice needs to be dedicated exclusively to how to break the press. It’s ridiculous how the Ducks nearly won with it.

    • Always has been this way remember John Day games and how they could not break a press to save their live. Or was that Robinson too?

      • During the past couple of years, WBB has lost a game or two because teams pressure them. Jack wrote a textbook analysis of how to break full-court press. Tinkle, especially, should read it.

        • Not being able to run a press-break without dribbling the ball is like not knowing how to run a 2-3 zone.

The only reason your team doesn’t do it is because you don’t run one.

  21. If the Beavs keep finding teams sending 4 players to the backcourt to press them, they should be able to take advantage going forward. Hell, full court passes down to Kelly in the post should end that pretty quickly

    • Or just run a really simple press-break, and score lay-ups and dunks until they stop.

It’s not like the press is some new and scary tool devised in the last three years by some mad scientist. Altman’s isn’t even a particularly good one. The one time we did get t to the middle of the floor, our C jogged it to the front court.

What coach refuses to implement a simple press-break? It just drives me bonkers.

  22. So bummed, SO bummed to hear that Kat Tudor is out for the season because of her knee injury against WSU. The team just isn’t the same without her.

Hope that by some long shot she gets some sort of medical redshirt year, but I can’t imagine that will happen. She played in nearly half the season…

    Go Beavs!

    • Bench is seriously short now. Everyone will have to step up with three players out. We’ll see if those who haven’t been playing much can live up to their recruit rankings.

Team will need to start out fast in each game to keep the starters fresh later in the game.

  23. The “traditional” rose bowl viewed as a potential challenge to an expanded playoff format….

    https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/04/sports/college-football-playoff-expansion.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fsports

OSU WBB wins by 11! Good to see them get the win without Tudor…man her injury sucks. How will they adjust without her? More 3’s?

OT – watched a short vid of the Chicago Bears kicker running off the field…fans hanging out to boo him. Missed a 43 yarder off the left post then the crossbar, bounced back into the endzone…so close…..apparently kicked for Philly last year. He likely won’t be going out for a cold one this evening….

    • Simmons is going to have to step up at least on D and ktmac more on the scoring end. Slocum was on fire today. Could see more of this too.

More worried about Washington with Thropay out. Need Maddie and Grymek to hold down the inside until she returns

      • More 3’s ?? I hope not. Looks to me like Taya and Aleah are capable of scoring the threes that Kat would have contributed. Three’s are great, but the team already relies on them so much.

Seems to me Washington has improved a lot since last season, she’ll need to keep it up, looks like Rueck will lean on her over Grymek.

Agree Katie needs to step up her O. It’s easy to take Pivec for granted, love her hustle.

I see this group ending up anywhere in the top 5 in the PAC, season is gonna come down to how well they are playing come March, and how long it takes Thropay to shake off the rust.

    • Rose Bowl could be a National Semifinal for PAC and B1G every year if there were four 16 team superconferences.
Then you can keep meaningful conference championship games as well.

Orange and Sugar could rotate as National Semifinal for SEC and ACC. Fiesta Bowl gets the PAC and B1G runner ups and Sugar and Orange rotate doing same for SEC-ACC. Big 12 teams disperse for the 4 superconferences.

All games matter. The National Championship is its own Final game not named after a Bowl. Never again is there a Clemson-Alabama National Championship. That’s too regionally focused and geys aettled out in the semis, making college football a national affair. Ohio State, Texas and USC get the biggest boost for their brands but that actually helps the rest of B1G and PAC and college football thrives across the country.

    • Probably didn’t help that the broadcast ran all the “doinks” off the goalposts he has had this year after he had this final fatal kick.

    • Only a little over a month away from the start of the season.

Looks like the only unknown spot is who will play third. Lots of candidates. I think the best bat will win it.

Philips and Armstrong should be up the middle. Hopefully Andy can get his bat really going.

I’m expecting Jones and Casey to be the other starting of.

McMahan will get in there too. He came in pretty highly rated, curious to see if he can break in to the lineup.

Still a solid roster. High floor team.

          • I’ve been taking a shot of Hood River vodka for every cliche spewed by Dabo Sweeney and his players. I am now staggering around the house. Apparently God is only a Clemson fan, good to know. I guess we Beaver fans must be Satanists?

          • Satan is a fairy tale told to kids in order to scare them into believing in some ambiguous deity.

So sayeth the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Therefore, it is truth

          • “Devils used to be God’s angels that fell from the top
There’s no diversity, because we’re burnin’ in the melting pot”

          • Just listened to that track. It’s a good story. But that line stands out as really lazy relative to the rest, and his metre absolutely sucks. His tone is also flat, and the sample of Mancini gets annoying after the first poor edit… before the sing-song even begins.

I tried to listen to three other tunes. Dude’s a nutso whacko.

But this particular track is mostly real.

          • Upon further reading, there’s more depth to the tracks I listened to, making it more about anxiety than it is conspiracy. But that doesn’t forgive him for using the wrong medium to display his angst, or the the right one to do it poorly.

          • heh heh…

            I get it.

Cramming verses into measures magically makes treasures.

It’s like the time someone tried to get me to say Dalek is great rap. Their industrial edits are great. Their flow seems natural. Their lyrics are more aware than this guy.

But the listener can’t hear a damn word they say, because they choose to mute the vocal track. Wtf?

There’s a difference between having a unique style and not being good at stylizing.

          • Lol. U know his metre is on purpose and his signature. Let us all know when u drop ur album since ur so knowledgeable and talented. Or maybe when ur reviews get published.

          • I figured someone would try to make that argument.

His metre makes him everyman. Bucking the system by being a monotone and awkward guy who makes noises like anyone can isn’t unique.

            Try again.

I’m impressed by his depth of knowledge in interviews. I cringe at the weak references to conspiracy whacko crap just to hook people who might think in an alt-way… in order to expand his audience. He clearly believes none of the crap. But he plays with it like a crutch.

Investigating why people run from him at his mention, it appears he gathered that lowest common denominator as a fan base because of that crutch, not because of his musicality… of whch he has little. To hear his fanboys speak of him, he’s the mostest awesomest rapper since ever.

To prove it, I was linked to a song about cocaine where other rappers sang his lyrics better than he apparently chooses to do, according to you and that person. He writes good stuff that needs a proofread. He has some interesting beats, albeit hs edits are wrong or lazy. And he throws in weird metaphors (or the aforementioned lazy conspiracy hooks) from out of the blue.

I might as well link the Super Bowl Shuffle and tell people who think it’s not good that that’s just their opinion… or whatever… because it’s intentional.

In studying him, apparently he tries too hard to be hip-hop. I don’t see it in him. I see someone who would be better suited giving a lecture on why Chomsky is correct about most everything he writes. He doesn’t need the distracting crutches and lazy metaphors and fawning fanboys to just speak the truth. He can do that at any time.

But he’s at best a sub-mediocre rapper because of his (apparently intentional) flaws.

It is never genius to pretend to be everyman. One either is or isn’t. But suckers will always buy it because the words match the underlying message they want to hear. Never mind that message has been told a myriad of ways by others more aptly and comprehensively.
He should just be better. I don’t know who said that. But be better.

      • Speaking of the town to the south, did anyone listening to Dan and Nigel this morning?

They were going to have Belotti on and ask him how many years away the quacks are from competing for a natty. I didn’t get to hear but they were asking for predictions of what he would say. I wasn’t sure if he was going to be realistic or a homer. If anyone heard the interview I’m also down for a good laugh.

        • I happened to be listening during my commute. He said they’re currently far away from the level of the teams that can compete for a national title currently, but thinks they’ll be there again in about 4 years. Nigel tended to agree

          • Appreciate the follow-up! I don’t even know if they can keep a coaching staff together for four years. The two coaches they just lost were very strong recruiters for them. I agree with Osalum94 below. With only have 1 of the 3 they can’t overcome what Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma, Georgia etc have along with other top programs that are second tier right now.

          • The pressure will get to Cristobal. Fans now have an expectation they’ll be perennial contenders, and they won’t be. They’ll be in the conversation at the beginning of every season and then they’ll crap the bed against some middle of the road pac teams and come back down to earth. Rinse. Repeat.

Eventually he’ll have to cut bait with Arroyo, Leavitt is trying his hardest to get anybody else to hire him as a HC, so you know he’s not all-in. Those will be some built in excuses when they go through coordinator turnover, which will help MC keep the fans hoping he can eventually deliver.

        • The Ducks are in the “running” for the Natty every year. Where have you been? The only way any Pac12 team will be in the hunt for a playoff spot is if they expand the playoff format dramatically and beyond 8 teams. Otherwise, little chance of any team let alone the Ducks getting a sniff. Until the Pac 12 can start attracting and getting NFL-caliber linemen along the same caliber as Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Ohio State, etc. ain’t no chance for them to be competitive at that same level as those teams just mentioned. Right now the talent gap is so significant, it will take several years for the Pac 12 to catch up competitively. The only hope is there are substantial coaching changes in those programs that cause them to take a drop. I suppose it could happen sooner, but not likely IMO.

  24. Can anyone tell me why KState waits on Klieman to finish his season, but they don’t wait on Venables? I get the difference in price tags. But I also get the difference between winning and being the second best team in the state.

      • If he isn’t, it would have to be Snyder’s fault for the way everything went down last year. Snyder’s contract is ~$3.5m, scheduled to increase to $4m in 2020. That money can be spent hiring Venables to coach his alma mater. I think he gets ~$2.4m now.

Without him, Clemson doesn’t win pseudo-championships.

    • Didn’t Venables come out and say he was staying at Clemson because his son was on the team? It’s amazing how much these top schools are paying coordinators now.

  25. Looks like Kliff Kingsbury is now the former USC Offensive Coordinator, as he’s taken the HC job for the Arizona Cardinals. Amazing you can go from being fired by Texas Tech to a HC job in the NFL.

  26. Anyone take a look at his film? I can’t breakdown film but would imagine it’s a tough evaluation given the level of competition.

    • They did it last year too. Epic fail for zero mention of how many times Walton says “the conference of champions” during the telecast.

Walton is only loved by people in Eugene, Westwood, that don’t watch college basketball and the deaf.

  27. The new pro football league that Riley joined starts up next month.

AZ team is littered with former osu players.

Coaching ranks also filled with coaches with ties to osu.

The thing that’ll hold the league back is the QBs. No standouts in the crowd. However lots of players who were really good in college.

    • I am one of the few people that thinks a spring league can work (the USFL would still be alive today had they stuck to their goal to grow slowly) but the AAF is a disaster. The Atlanta coach just quit in the middle of training camp and multiple signed players have bailed for the NFL. The league’s only hope is the NFL deciding to subsidize it.

      • The USFL would likely still be thriving now if they didn’t allow Dumbshit to be an owner.

Agreed on the funding side. If not the NFL, someone has to step in and secure the league. It can be done by someone who is looking to make it salable to the NFL… who should have a developmental/relegation league if they want to survive the dearth of properly trained talent coming out of college.

      • The AAF could very well end up a disaster, but I think Brad Childress is going to get an NFL assistant coaching job, so that’s why he’s leaving.

        • I agree about Childress but allowing players/coaches to leave right before the season for NFL jobs is not a recipe for success.

Honestly, I have never understood the point of a spring developmental league. I think the NFL needs a minor league but it should be playing in the fall. A spring league needs to be built around older guys who are talented but not quite NFL level talented. Essentially the guys the CFL is getting.

    • I think fhe XFL could be interesting as a competitor. They’ve stated that they dont plan to restrict their player signings to kids out of college, so you could see guys going straight from highschool to earning a paycheck while skipping college. That will be a pretty attractive option if they have the means to pay their players a decent salary. Could really hurt ncaa college football model.

      • The hurt would be on those kids. They’d be playing vs much more mature players. Very few if any could make that jump.

Won’t hurt NCAA model but could really change the JC models. Why play at a JC when they could play pro? Majority of JC players are there because of academics. Now they might have an option to play without school attached.

      • The XFL definitely appears to have a better plan.

Large markets, take your time putting together teams, quality management (Oliver Luck knows his shit), and loads of cash from Vince McMahan.

That said, I don’t see ‘trying to replace the NCAA’ as a viable model either (not that I think that is their plan). They might be able to sprinkle in a young guy here and there but for a spring league to truly succeed they need to take the talent that isn’t quite good enough to be in the NFL (and there is tons of it) and build an interesting product with those guys.

There is a ton of quality players that don’t make the NFL and with the right plan I think a league could have CFL level success in the US during the spring.

I am not sure the XFL can be that league, the brand is pretty tainted in my opinion. I do think the XFL is more likely to succeed as ‘division 2’ pro football than the AAF though. Their plan doesn’t require the NFL to bail them out and rumors have them getting a decent TV deal.

    • I heard about that. The player, I think, is Doug Brenner.

I remember watching Brenner play as a 6th grader. My son played against his CYO team. They would run a sweep, pulling Brenner around the edge. Scary. Kids were running away.

    • That one pissed me off. Taggart should have been fired for it.

      But no.

It’s college football. Societal norms for health and safety don’t apply.
      https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2814846-former-oregon-ol-doug-brenner-sues-willie-taggart-ncaa-school-for-115m

He should be asking for more. They’re likely going to settle. But he had a promising career in football. He went from an All-Conference Honorable in 2016 to out of football and partially disabled for life. It takes an empty soul to do that to someone, even out of negligence.

      • If I’m Nikegon, I settle with him for $11.5m and apologize profusely. I can’t imagine they want any of this to be put in the public record with them denying and defending against the many depositions that will be performed.

    • Seems Brenner has a good case; the “Strength Coach” did not have solid credentials and didn’t bother to try to obtain them during the month long suspension without pay which resulted from the incident. From reports, it isn’t clear if Brenner’s attorneys pushed this point.
UPDATE: His attorneys didn’t overlook the certification question. This from the RG: “After the incident, it was revealed that Oderinde was not certified by the National Strength Coaches Association or the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, the two main certifying bodies for collegiate strength coaches. Brenner’s complaint claims negligence on the part the university for failing to supervise the workouts and for failing to ensure Taggart and Oderinde had proper training.”

His degrees in Recreation Administration and Sports Management made Irele Oderinde much better suited to organize a co-ed volleyball tourney than to direct the conditioning activities of a Div 1 FB team.

For a $245 fee, the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) offers a 21-hour strength training course to become a certified NCAA strength coach in any sport. By comparison, the widely-used Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCA) requires 30 times as much training — a 640-hour certification process.

Irele opted for the 21 hour course and nikegon saw no problem.

      https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/the-unregulated-world-of-strength-coaches-and-college-footballs-killing-season/

        • I don’t believe he has the “21 hour special” cert offered by the Cross Country outfit.

McDonald’s bio indicates he is certified by both the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association.

Additionally, McDonald holds a Masters in kinesiology.

          • Wait…that dude with the handlebar mustache is their strength coach? Yikes. How do youh take someone seriously when they look like that?

          • The dude with the handlebar mustache is the current strength coach, he isn’t part of the suit.

And, he doesn’t appear to hold the 21 hour cross country certificate. He does list the other two certs in his bio.

OT: Whatever happened to the ball boy with the skunk hairdo? Another sideline photo op guy from nikegon.

  28. Saw last night on the beavers show and Parker says they expect a decision on Luton medical red shirt for sixth year. Parker sounded pretty optimistic NCAA will approve. I suppose that’s a good thing should it happen.

    • After doing a quick check of players who recently got a 6th year, Luton’s case is pretty weak. He played in every year he was eligible, and only one that resulted in a season ending injury. Unless he was injured his redshirt year at Idaho, I don’t think he’ll get another year.

The guys who were recently granted 6th years, lost two seasons due to injury.

      • I’m just repeating what Mike Parker stated on the program last night. He appears to be very confident in what he said about Luton being granted. What that means is anybody’s guess and there are apparently other factors that come into play into these decisions and not just # of games played. I guess we shall see….

    • Interesting that some of the comments are for a more complimentary tact toward rules and stuff.

They do know that they’re talking about UW… no?

  29. Eggers just tweeted,
“Good news for @BeaverFootball: QB @JakeLuton6 has been granted a sixth year of eligibility. #GoBeavs”

    And from the school:

“We’re excited to have Jake for another year,” Beaver head coach Jonathan Smith said. “This offense did great things in 2018 and we look forward to building on that production this coming season.”

Luton graduated in December with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and is taking graduate courses this term.

The NCAA recently modified a rule in the sport of football that if a student-athlete redshirts in their first year of eligibility and misses a full year subsequently due to injury, they can be granted an extension. In Luton’s case, 2017 is considered a year missed due to playing in four games or less.

    • Yay, another offseason of unnecessary QB controversy. Player A had a great monday at practice, but player B had an even better day on Tuesday(in the 10 minutes media is allowed to observe the team)
Who’s it gonna be?? Guess we’ll find out just before OkState and then flip flop a week later.

    • It’s good so long as Gebbia is the real deal and can keep him off the field. Another prolonged QB battle with Luton getting the nod after no one else is able to separate feels like it would be an early death sentence on the season.

      • A lot of things point to Gebbia being the real deal. His HS film is good, and he didn’t suck at Nebraska. It’s noteworthy that JS has been specific in referring to Gebbia not disappointing in practice and praising his ability and natural leadership skills etc, and then reverted back to his vague “offense did some good things” line when commenting on Luton’s return.

I feel he’s pretty close to the kind of guy JS would prefer behind center; Low-ego-high-output, religious, academic achiever, natural leader, accurate above all else.

But due to “luck o da beavs” I’m cautiously optimistic at best for now until we get into Spring ball.

  30. Well the Luton news is certainly surprising, more because the NCAA changed the criteria. That means a lot of guys could get a 6th year.

In a way it helps the team, providing depth assuming no one transfers and the coaches had to play 3 QBs last year.

Hurts the team since the team needs to move on. Gebbia should be the starter. His job to lose.

  31. Mike Parker was right when he said luton would get the 6th year approved. Never have been a big fan of Luton but he does bring much needed experience and depth to the beavers. I don’t know too much about Gebbia but it should be interesting how this plays out. Last year we were so thin at QB so at least we have some options. Lutons biggest issue is lack of mobility but he already has established connections with the receivers and you can’t discount that. If we can improve the pass blocking to compliment the running game, both qbs could put up some nice numbers. At this point gebbia is unproven while luton has had mixed results so we shall see which one can rise to the top. Personally, I think Luton could really benefit from his previous PT and familiarity with the offense to win the starting job. If he can’t with win it with that advantage, then I hope Gebbia proves to be the better option.

      • Since Luton qualifies for a 6th year, James Rawls will also. Very similar scenarios, although Rawls was injured during a full season(or 2?) before he transferred here. Can’t apply for a 6th year until after the next season is over though, so that may be an open question. But the precedence is there now and he meets the qualifying factors.

      • I’m a little concerned that a marginally better Luton might beat out Gebbia and stall his development. I would rather have a worse year with Gebbia if it means that I have a better option with upside in his junior & senior years. Not saying this is the case but I have seen several OSU quarterbacks make large strides in their 2nd significant year of significant playing time (Canfield, Smith, Mannion). There are also plenty of examples of this in the pro’s across all sports. What would Jermaine O’neal have been in Portland had Rasheed Wallace been moved instead…

Truth is, Luton will likely only play a handful of games this year due to some other injury. That guy can’t stay on the field. Having him for depth is probably ideal but as a beaver fan I have to play devil’s advocate.

  32. Modified rule for the 6th year criteria makes a bunch of guys eligible for a 6th year. Huge benefit to players who redshirt as freshmen.

  33. The look on Luton’s face on the sideline when he was not playing was not a good look. He pouts a lot and with this being his final year (there was talk most of last season he would get a 6th year) does he become more of a liability than an asset when it comes to moving this team forward?

I don’t see any scenario where Luton coming back for a 6th year is beneficial. If he is a backup he will pout and potentially become a cancer on the team (split locker room much like MM). If he wins the job it delays Gebbia’s development and puts us another year behind schedule. I understand we need depth for next season but this program needs to look forward and Luton provides zero benefit to this team other than maybe helping out if Gebbia get injured. Overall what does that do maybe help the team win a game or 2 tops? Just don’t see any upside but will probably delay Gebbia’s development and piss him off in the process.

I do feel for Luton but this program has to move forward.

  34. Luton shouldn’t be on the field. He is likely a “Practice day All-Star” who can’t deliver when the real game begins. I am tired of seeing him overthrow every deep route, run backwards to avoid a sack, and generally not lead with any type of moxie. He doesn’t have an “IT” factor and seems to discourage the team as the games wear on. I think his arm strength is a lame storyline for a guy who hasn’t produced for 2 years. I hoped for a Ben Rothlisberger but he is more like a bad version of Derek Anderson, without any touch on the deep throws.
Stats may say he is productive but it doesn’t meet the eyeball test to me.

Leach gets one year out of Minshew and he is more productive than 3 years of Luton at OSU, guaranteed.

Should JS just proclaim Gebbia the starter and move forward on that basis?

  35. This will be telling of Smith. Let’s hope Smith will take a que from Dabo Swinney and play the best player regardless of what year they are in school. I agree that Gebbia, if he is the better QB, should be named sooner then later.

    • I think if we can start 3-0 in conference, we might start needing separate threads. Until then, I think people are in wait and see mode with OSU.
USC gets a little luck O the Beavs tonight as UsC gets Kevin Porter(lottery pick) back from injury tonight. Hopefully he’s rusty and hopefully the Beavs don’t come in over confident.

  36. Meant to post earlier that Beavs coaches will make the road trip to Alaska on Monday to visit under the radar OL prospect Thomas Sio.

Seems that OL and DE are still the main focus as we head to the final signing day. Getting Luton back reduces our available spots, which I predict to be around 4. But considering how many rocks we’re turning over lately trying to find the hidden gems, maybe that’s a good thing we’re not adding an extra 2019 guy. Who knows, maybe we’ll get lucky still.
