That should have been a win. All they had to do was continue to run the ball and convert any short situations that came up. Instead Smith and the OC got “Luton Happy” and began throwing when Hawaii never established they could stop the run (Beavs had like 200 yards by the 2nd quarter).
A list of some Smith errors:
1. Luton was not the best option to win the game. If the coach claims he wants to put his players in the best position to win, you can’t tell me that was Luton (at least not tonight, though I don’t think ever).
2. Kicking with Choker from 52. This guy can’t even make it from 32.
3. Fake punt when that was so obvious Hawaii was just standing there waiting for it. You should either punt or go for it with your actual QB.
4. Abandoning the run mid game and falling in love with Luton for no reason.
5. Not having Luton throw a hail mary instead and instead you call a trick play that never works. The guy’s strength is supposed to be his 60 yard bombs. Haven’t seen one.
6. Poor fundamentals. No discipline in the players — they punch one another in the face.
7. Abandoning Pierce when he had an 11.3 YPC and was the best player in the 1st half.
8. Not giving Gebbia a shot to win the game with Luton clearly was not the answer.
9. Etc. Has to be more.
What a disaster. Smith now has lost the Nevada and Hawaii games due to poor coaching. To state the obvious: we’re not a program that can afford that. Let me know what I missed on the list. There has to be more.
The D is so bad, but the O just looked lost in the 2nd half
and yet, among the coaches OSU could have hired at various points in the past decade or in the past two years — Mike Leach, Les Miles, Mack Brown all won again today at places historically difficult to win at..
I’m not sure they were all coming
That’s what she said…
Should I pull up the post where everyone laughed at me and called me nuts for thinking Mike Leach was the steal of the century?? He was so tainted at the time — could have been had for nothing.
The rebuttal was, “he doesn’t fit in Corvallis.”
Well, that town might have to ditch the inbreeding, prodigal son, and nepotism and take a chance on someone who doesn’t fit.
the folly of the failure to jettison Riley when he was clearly worn out and pick up a coach like Leach
was perhaps exceeded by not hiring Les Miles when he was on the market and OSU had an open position. didn’t even even need to cut loose with an existing coach.
“inbreeding, prodigal son” pattern doesn’t bode well for Canham
Major difference between Canham and JS…..MC had plenty of HC experience before being hired at OSU and the program he inherited is in great shape. JS inherited a program that was a dumpster fire and given he had ZERO HC experience and was expected to turn around a dumpster fire….he shouldn’t have been hired.
I have all the confidence that MC will keep the OSU baseball program on an upward trajectory but JS is just too inexperienced to resurrect this train wreck of a program. The bad hire is right squarely on the shoulders of the goof AD and he should be shown the door immediately.
I’m willing to give JS four years to make this program competitive but it’s going to get uglier before it gets better and it may not get any better.
good points all. Smith was hired because he looked good in the abstract riding Chris Petersen’s coat-tails (“you didn’t build that”) and because he was the QB during the Dennis Erickson era, when the lesson to be drawn from the Erickson era is that what OSU needs in football is a coach with the profile of a renegade, like Erickson, like Leach, like Miles, etc
Guarantee I didn’t laugh at the Leach suggestion. I love that weird little fucker.
Lol les miles lost to coastal carolina today
Thank god for Kansas. The one P5 school that is more inept at CFB that our Beavs.
Rutgers is pretty bad also. I’d like to see a power five “shit-off” between Kansas, Rutgers, Vanderbilt, Louisville and the Beavs. Maybe Louisville gets a bye, they seem like they are improved? Let’s see who’s the best of the worst!
I don’t think I have seen a coach with less control over his team than smith…..like wow there have been a lot of poorly coached teams over the years but my goodness, that game was as bad as its gets as far as coaching.
The play calling on that last set of downs was just stunning, capped off by expecting Choukair to hit a kick in the clutch.
The fighting should be concerning, he has players who don’t respect him or the game to do that shit. Also, some stupid penalties. It gives me the impression that some of his messages are falling on deaf ears. He’s too milquetoast and cerebral for me. My suspicion is that he is going to fail and end up an OC at a small college after all is said and done. I truly hope I’m wrong.
Because an ga era player lost his head that means coach Smith’s players don’t respect him. Give me a break.
They’re his players now. He’s coaching them discipline and whatever other skills they have.
Right. Why do u think hayes dropped from starting to not playing? He was given a chance yesterday and blew it. It’s more important to see what actions he takes. I hope he is made an example of.
You’re ignoring Lavaka’s complete meltdown at the end of the game. I think there we will more to come regarding that when the film is reviewed. Two players, same game equals culture flaws to me.
As I reflect on it, OSU is in the midst of the 7th consecutive season without a QB with the full range of skills: Mannion couldn’t run: Luton can’t run either, and perhaps worse, can’t play at a competent level for more than 2 quarters per game
Yet they’ve had two excellent ones on their bench who could do it all in McM and Gebbia.
10. Hiring Tibesar
(obligatory mention)
Yep. That’s a good one.
Alright, I need to sleep. I’m an hour ahead of you savages, and this game has really messed up my sleep cycle. I look forward to some awesome comments in the morning.
First non-baseball beaver game I’ve watched in a long time. I regret it.
Luton is inaccurate. Half of his throws felt like wasted downs and I’m not sure who he was even throwing at.
Why abandon the run when we are gashing them for 7 yards per carry?
Loved manning up and going for it on 4th down from the 30 and RUNNING THE BALL. Riley would have never done that and it felt good.
Hated the stupid obvious fake punt
The play calling on the last series was terrible. Why are we bombing it down there with plenty of time on the clock and all of our time outs?
Our secondary is awful. Good passing games will eat us alive.
we did abandon the run. note nicebeaver’s side note on Pierce’s second half carries (not). The thing is, as soon as teams load up on the run and tempt OSU to beat them with the pass, Luton is simply not competent enough to do so.
Gebbia has to start next week, or the coaching dysfunction on display tonight will be turbocharged.
It was a tie game in the 4th and we went for it on 4th down on 3(three!!!) separate occasions in our own fucking territory!! Converted 1 of 3 attempts. It was tied!!! What the fuck were we doing not punting it 40 to 50 yards down the field???
Smith apparently didn’t notice that his defensive unit was playing better than his offense
Yep, they forced field goal attempts in both of those short field possessions. This loss wasnt on the D
The downside of the Peterson influence.
Dear Coach Smith,
I would have pulled Luton early in the third quarter. With our ability to run, we just need a game manager to complete a few passes, not a gunslinger. That second half starting early in the third quarter with several missed passes in a row, drive killers. Luton doesn’t have the it factor. The look in his eyes is as one despairing of what to do, not of confidence. He has no touch on the short passes. I don’t take him as a winner. Would really like to see what Gebbia can do. BTW, what the hell was that fake punt? How can you set up your team for success with a call like that? Oh, you’ve got the same problem with your kicker as your quarterback. So disappointed in this team…So disappointed in myself for putting all this energy into fandome. Much better things I should be doing with my time..
From one coach to another, it’s all about utilizing your talent in the right places… Is there a place for pierce to be on the field at the same time as Jefferson, to swing the ball to him in short passes. I would bet Gebbia could make those passes, cause I’m not confident that Luton can throw a five yard pass easy for a back to catch, ie fourth and six and Hodge has to dive to his right for the ball pulling him away from the first down….
Well good luck. I think you will be a good coach some day. But right now, you are trying too hard, taking risks when you don’t have to.
C
That was weird.
How did Teddy from Bobs Burgers get hired to do play by play for this game?
The amazing thing about Angry’s analysis is that it truly does appear that Luton starts because he looks the part of the tall QB who can sling it.
And, by the way, per Ron Callan, Luton blamed the loss on the offense’s lack of production in the second half. Now that’s great analysis. Classic use of the royal “we”
Also, Cal wins in Seattle. Add Wilcox as another guy OSU could have hired in the last couple of years
Dumb.
Actually disagree somewhat… Smith is doing some nice things in terms of play proper game theory IE going for it on 4th and 1 deep in your territory and also the 4th and 5… attempting the 52 yarder is insanity and also some dicey play calling on that last drive…fake punt i dont think was that obvious TBH.. tough one to judge…depends on what they’ve seen in practice and how Hawaii was defending
Gebbia situation is certainly still up in the air.. don’t see much upside to Luton at this point…I would imagine Gebbia will get some drives vs Cal Poly
The situation was atrocious for a fake punt , but the call was even worse. You have your punter throw a 15 yard sideline route that required a perfect 25 yard throw for completion? WTF????
15 yds or 25 which is it?
The punter doesnt know either.
He was about ten yards behind the line of scrimmage, right? So 25 yard throw in total.
Just like Pearl Harbor except we bombed ourselves.
Luton is almost as old as me at this point, and still in college. How on earth is he still pretty much the same quarterback as when Andersen brought him in? I get that he suffered a horrible injury and everything, but if this game is any indication, he hasn’t really grown since he came into OSU at all. That’s concerning to me.
I just hope Smith sees the same, and starts Gebbia, who at least could grow into a higher ceiling.
Cal Poly would be a good game to start Gebbia
Bad loss for Smith, Abandoned the run a la Danny Langsdorf
Vegas said 2.5 wins, I guess t should have put money on the under
Joe Avezzano’s records may be in jeopardy.
Also, despite being a 6th year senior, Luton is not adept at scanning options or else the play calling is being kept very simple. He threw into triple coverage to Togaia on what was either a third or fourth down. He’s locking on to his primary receiver most of the time. He has no vision when he’s forced out of the pocket and has a hard getting his big, lumbering body in position to throw on the run. It’s fime for a change.
Yet people claim and believe he’s an nfl guy.
Lol.
Just because he’s tall.
The irony is that the “tall NFL QB” is more myth than actuality. There are some short QB’s doing well in the NFL now. Luton wouldn’t last a quarter in a NFL game.
Who?
Wilson and Brees come to mind. Aaron Rodgers ain’t a giant, either.
I meant who said luton was an nfl qb because he’s tall?
Another year of being punching bag U and even losing the games against the little sisters of the poor. In my opinion we should look at conference realignment or something needs to change. We’re just simply not able to compete in the revenue sports. Outside of Hidgins and Jefferson I’m not sure we have any players that would make the two deep at any other p5 school. We’re obviously more competitive with teams a few rungs lower on the ladder.
Would you rather be somewhat competitive in 6-8 games or continue getting our faces stomped into the curb in all but 1-3 games every season? Seems like an easy choice from a fan standpoint but I understand there’s money to be made as a perennial power 5 doormat.
Really the summation of this horrible disaster falls on the round shoulders of John Smith. He made a very poor coaching decision the week before the season started by allowing our so-called offensive coordinator to have his way and start Luton. Anybody who has followed the Beavers for the past few years knows that Luton is a stork with almost no mobility whatsoever. In this game I don’t recall Luton ever attempting even one scramble for yardage. Here we have a four star QB who holds numerous California high school passing records on the team, and who has demonstrated some budding running skills (maybe you observed his awesome TD scramble in the pre-season scrimmage) and Smith is ok with going with a senior who is not going to be here ever again after another two months. Our overall offensive game to me seems BORRRRIIIIINNNNGGGG!!!!!!!!! We need a spark right now. Get Gebbia in before its to late, the season is totally lost, and he gets smart and gets the hell out of here. John Smith needs to step up and be a coach, not a puppet.
A one win season is staring us in the face.
Meh, seen it already recently
I’ll need to change my profile name after this post. But I’ve been following OSU football since 1986, and I’m done after this game. Life is too short, to watch abysmal pathetic basement dwellers of college football. Especially pathetic football programs that lose their composure, throwing punches at opposing players, and their own teammates! It’s embarrassing and I refuse to support this sort of behavior. In over 30 years I’ve never seen anything like the current state of the OSU football program. We’ve lost plenty of games, but I’ve never seen OSU lose their composure like last night.
Even with that maniac Anderson at the helm I don’t recall multiple punches ever being thrown at a game.
The punches were all thrown by the fans at their TV sets
It’s funny watching the “Fire Riley” crowd eat crow. This program has been in a tailspin ever since he left. I never thought I’d say this…but maybe Banker wasn’t so bad…
I had to chuckle, there was a shot of Banker doing his hand jive on the sideline during the game, I think it was after the Beavs had a nice running play. Some things never change!
Who’s eating crow? Riley should have been fired 2 years before he left. If you think hes so great just look at how bad he fucked Nebraska a perennial 8 win team. Fuck riley and fuck anybody who thinks we should have just kept him around.
The Beavs are 9-41 since he left. Makes you dream of the 7-5 / 8-4 seasons that he used to put together. The “Fire Riley” crowd thought we could do better…they were obviously wrong.
No, we could do better, we just hired the wrong people. And they put the wrong players on the field.
That’s a cute theory…
So hire Riley back and see how that works out for you.
“So hire Riley back and see how that works out for you.”
No amount of “told ya so” satisfaction is worth that!
check Riley’s record from 2010 on after deleting the completely anomalous w/l record for 2012.
^^^^^^
Ah yes…don’t count the good years, just the bad. Nice logic!
Yep, settling for mediocrity, the typical beaver fan way. Tell me do you yell at people to sit down when you go to games?
Yes…I would settle for 8-4 over 2-10.
8-4 that invariably includes a national TV buttfucking and getting destroyed by your in state rival.
Riley was NOT pulling 8-4 at the end there!
No crow to be eaten. Riley was over the coaching hill, and his crap job at #TPB verified it.
We just made a horrible hire in Anderpants.
This
Wow the punches thrown by our players last night were totally inexcusable and embarrassing!
In the articles I’ve read about the game, Smith is of course blowing it off as the emotion of the game.
Nice, enabling terrible behavior. That should turn out great
I didnt get to watch the game. What was the reason for the punches?
Here’s the post game punch thrown by Lavaka
https://mobile.twitter.com/pricey43/status/1170604595984257024
I was told one beav player punched a fellow beav as well–any footage of that? completely disgraceful.
Nevermind, found it: https://twitter.com/DoctorChoy/status/1170739437854019585
WOW
Smith should bench him for a week. From a senior “leader.”
They had 60 minutes to punch Hawaii in the mouth metaphorically, but waited until they lost to do it literally.
Another great Scotty point/post.
Where were all the others?
Where were all the others?
I suggest people step up donations with whatever they can afford and do the “monthly/recurring” option because that’s what we need (ala Patreon). It’s getting very hard to run this site from a mental perspective and my time is scarce these days, and I feel guilty not being able to pay NB for his recruiting work. I do not take to a football team messing up my sleep cycle very kindly. In fact, if I get a good offer it is up for sale (6.5 million views, 100s of users, etc). Contact info on the right if you’re interested in a full out purchase.
Hey guys been a while. must admit I passed out before the second half started. I think they were at 28-14 last I saw so I thought they would probably win so I went off to bed. BF stayed up to watch though….Then he rolls in all late and pissed off several hours later. it sounds like they turned into a completely different team from what I watched. Wtf…
Black out drinking is dangerous:)
It’s just about the only way to through a beaver football game.
haha, it was just regular old boring fatigue but cheers to that ;)
Ohhhh so that’s what they mean when they call for a blackout!
Honestly, I’m far more taken aback by the fan base being at all surprised at this awful result on the field. Personally I didn’t expect anything less. JS should have never been expected to be able to turn this program around. And JS’s addition of the old Riley raggamuffin crew who let the program suffer before, and that failed at Nebraska… no wonder we are where we are at. We hired a HC with no experience that surrounded himself with a staff with little experience with success and a generous about of failure.
Mike Leach, Les Miles, et al all have wanted the job at some point in time. But they were perceived as “not a good fit”. They are winners with a history of WINNING.
Ed Ray couldn’t leave fast enough. Barnes needs to go. JS needs to go. This is tragically awful.
Ray and Barnes need to go. I lost about 90% confidence in Smith last night. Still have a smidgen left because he did have a pedigree as an OC and learned under a great HC. I thought some of that would translate. It hasn’t at all, and worse Smith is known for being “smart” and yet he is so stupid (Nevada game, making the same mistake last night with Choker, and the 9 other points above on how he single-handedly helped lose the game). Hard to argue he’s smart. He might look like a nerd, but he’s not a nerd.
Was at the game behind the beaver sideline.
Yelled at Barnes who looked sour all night.
Barnes needs to go, I told my friends Choukair sucks and I was correct.
This does seem hopeless. How long until a new president is appointed and in place? So many variables though. Better, worse from angrybeav standpoint? Barnes going or staying? How long until anyone better, worse, from angrybeav standpoint is in Barnes’s place? Maybe Gary Andersen was right – Oregon State football is an impossible task.
Ed Ray is, in fact, the root of this problem. Refused to put any pressure on BDC to put pressure on Riley until it was too late. (Check the way successive Nebraska AD’s forced Riley’s hand on Banker (indeed, may have bypassed Riley and fired Banker directly) and then Moos, who made the genius move of hiring Leach at WSU, fire Riley as his first major act.
Ray oversaw the whole Andersen melt-down, hired Barnes, refused to back Pat Casey on the Heimlich affair; disruption that cost OSU one national title and then Casey himself. Indeed, I think the reason Casey positioned himself the way he did is that when Ray’s replacement gets to town (that date can’t get here fast enough but I recall it’s next June), the new president will do a quick scan of the football program, see attendance and w/l numbers that evoke the Avezzano era, fire Barnes and hire Casey as the new AD.
Ray is gone June or July, I forget. Somewhere around then. We will likely mess up the hire, but you’re correct it gives an opportunity for drastic change finally.
The bad things about Jack not being around after a loss like this….
1) Would somehow, though pretzel logic, explain how all of Smith’s decisions/ strategies were correct
and we are just not smart enough to understand it.
2) Go on a rant about how boring CFB is and how could anybody watch it, while dissecting every
critical play with specifics that would require watching them over and over.
3) Blaming Trump for the loss and actually believing it.
I was thinking this exact thing last night. Thanks for writing it.
ahahah that sums jack up perfectly. whatever happened to him?
Smoked some pot and bang, dead. Or base jumping in the swiss alps bang, dead. Or autoerotic asphyxiation. Or perhaps all three at once? Whatever.
One of the best posts on here, ever. All so true
I wonder if the main issues are still competitive fire and guys who are truly winners not being in leadership roles yet. Many of the leaders of this current roster are GA guys, many of the recent past leaders were MR holdovers who never were truly competitive leaders.
My only glass half full approach is the argument of time for JS gets more of his guys into the actual leadership roles within the locker room. If the team is voting Luton as a captain, that signals an overall lack of competitiveness or awareness from this roster. I am concerned that JS isn’t able to demand enough or seperate himself from the guys and actually be the General Patton that this group needs to lead them. Right now they are being led by General Custer…
Pierce is the only guy left from GA era that I enjoy watching.
Embarrassing game last night is an understatement. Curious how the coaches, players, and program responds as a whole. Could fold here and mail the season in. Players and coaches lost it mentally last night. Big moment for smith here to get players unified and execute in a game they should dominate. Smith Is in it for the long haul so I hope he is willing to make the necessary moves.
I was trying to remember who Kaleb Hayes was and just read my writeup on him:
Kaleb Hayes — Tough to analyze. Looks a lot like Seth Collins in that he’s lean and played QB in HS. I don’t see him as a QB…maybe a WR or CB. Has long strides and good speed.
Seth Collins….hm..another lunatic/asshole.
Do we want lunatics or psychopaths on the team? I cant remember which one was preferred.
Psychopaths. At least they can be highly productive if channeled correctly.
Asshole lunatics are the worst.
Who had the more unlikely accomplishment at OSU: Dennis Erickson Fiesta Bowl or Pat Casey 3 CWS Titles?
Casey. If it were Erickson national championship, I’d say him, though. So close.
Erickson had one good year, other three were .500. He wasnt God, fired from two NFL jobs, lost at ASU. He had one good year with Riley’s recruits and didnt crash the Porsche at Miami.
Cockeyed Optimist
Bob Lundeberg, who just got married and moved to Boise, has done some great reporting and seemed to have the pulse of the baseball team. Via twitter, here’s his comment and glass half full assessment of the rest of the football schedule:
“So much to digest from last night’s game, but I keep going back to the play calling on the final drive. Once in FG range, why not run it at least once? Perplexing to me.
The good news for OSU: Cal Poly, Stanford, UCLA, Zona and ASU all look like winnable games.”
Funny, what marriage can do to a guys mind!
I am not down on this team as much as everyone else… They blew this one, that is obvious but I want to see how they bounce back… At least the team showed that they can compete which I haven’t seen in a long time… I agree with Bob that those are winnable games, they have the players to do it… it all comes down to how they adjust or if they adjust at all… I can honestly say this is a better team than last year… Now does JS have the guts or brains to make the moves he needs to? That’s yet to be seen… honestly the fighting at the end by Lavaka I didn’t mind, yeah it’s dumb but at least they finally have some fire, when’s the last time we’ve seen that? Kaleb Hayes on the other hand, way out of line, attacking your own player is inexcusable
Yes, they have the players to win, they had them last night too. Why would the coaches choose not to use those players last night, but they’ll use them “next time”? There is no next time. Their chance to win was last night and they blew it.
Haha. It’s Beaver thinking. It’s always about next time. It trickles up to the HC apparently.
That’s any football fans thinking unless they win it all or exceed expectations.
Angry was right again. It’s Gebbia time.
I feel like JS really wants to be aggressive and play to win, so much so that it gets away from him on game day and it can take him out of the ”low-ego/high-output” culture he’s been preaching. It feels like that internal conflict is rubbing off on the staff/players. I want to see him honor his rhetoric and stick to building this program slowly, especially on game day when emotions are running high.
The 3-year Jake Luton experiment should officially be over. We know who he is and what we can expect from him. Gebbia should get the start against Cal Poly as our personnel advantage can give him the best case scenario to succeed and build confidence heading into the bye week and Pac-12 schedule. I think he will play well, but certainly suffer some growing pains.
Tibesar does deserve some criticism at this point, but it’s also important to understand that our 3-4 scheme is designed to be aggressive and disruptive and we simply do not have the personnel to execute it at this point, especially with injuries.
This staff can’t continue to pretend that they’re going to make a big Year 2 jump and that they’re ready to compete for a bowl game. They simply aren’t there yet, and they’ve got to be honest with themselves and the players about that and keep building for the future.
Run the ball, control the line of scrimmage, feed Jefferson and Pierce for 200+ yards a game, and give Gebbia 10 weeks to grow into a Pac-12 starter.
Accept that you are personnel deficient on Defense and play within yourself knowing that the D is going to struggle to not get boat raced all season. Teach the scheme and technique, correct the mistakes, get the most out of what you’ve got, and ffs recruit better personnel.
Enough with the fake-punts, abandoning the run, cute reverses on 1st down, and half-hearted 4th down conversions. No more 50+ yard Choker attempts either.
Kaleb Hayes should sit the rest of the season for a chance to play next year. Without laying down the hammer they risk losing the respect of the team and they will eventually flat out quit on them as this inevitably gets harder to swallow as the season drags on.
That’s just where this program is at right now and I want to see this coaching staff react accordingly the rest of the season.
I certainly hope we didn’t get rid of the player who lost his shit and started punching teammates. Psycho. I seem to remember a recent discussion about wanting more psychos. We’ve got one. Now we just need coaching that is capable and competent enough to direct his rage in the proper directions. At least he had passion and a pulse.
Thoughts:
Togiai shouldn’t be passed to he’s a good extra blocker but his hands are way to inconsistent.
Speaking of hands. There were way too many drops the last 2 games.
Champ is holding us back imo. I know he had that decent kick return but I can’t help but think that Irish would take it to the house. When you’re that small you have to be extremely fast and agile. I think he’s quick but not enough to start over taylor.
Penalties killed us. This team is simply not good enough to beat themselves.
Pressure on qb is still very minimal. I watch all these other teams play and they can still get pressure on superior teams. The blitzes never get home and no one seems to win their one on ones.
We finally got a couple turnovers. Nashons return was pretty bad though. He had quite a bit of room.
Fake punt was bad.
Run the ball more.
They went from rotating too much to not giving pierce enough Carrie’s. He it s a homerun threat but his vision isn’t great.
Secondary obviously got toasted but I was surprised ward ran right pass Wright for a td.
I missed what happened with lavaka. I saw hayes throw a punch at Roberts though. How embarrassing he should be suspended at least.
Luton was very out of sync in the second half.
Ran to the right a lot compared to the left like OOB has mentioned.
Anyone know about injuries? Eldridge and gumbs got hurt. Anyone else? Anyone heard anything? I hope not just for the team but for those poor kids sake they’re ok. Both fought back from knee injuries just to get injured in the 2nd game would be terrible.
Hodgins PI was bs.
Back to luton being off and everyone is mad. McDonald missed quite a few throws as well. I think some would be touchdowns.
It seemed like they were squatting on the short routes the second half and that was a lot of the problem. I wouldn’t mind seeing some more shots downfield to see things open up a but more.
Kipper was called for 2 penalties. I think he was called for one last week as well. Hope that doesn’t continue.
Has musgrave played yet? Put him or smalls in on passing plays.
Choukair miss sux but I can’t blame that call. It’s a damned if u do damned if u dont thing. If he went for it and didn’t get it everyone would ask why not kick it. The chances were about the same as completing a first.
We got lucky their kicker missed 3 fgs.
Secondary looks terrible. Arnold is going to be good I think. Looks fiery.
“This team is simply not good enough to beat themselves.”
It’s the only team they CAN beat!
Yea. You lost me, and your credibility when you said AP lacks vision. Agreed he is being criminally underused based off his skill set and elite level talent.
I’m sure there is a reason why his reps are limited (we will NEVER KNOW why). Whether he lacks consistency or just sucks I n protections, and/or perhaps he is still banged up. All I know is I simply cannot allow myself to hypothesize AP wasn’t playing because of poor coaching or they just forgot to rotate him in. Seriously. Lol. . There has to be a why, in which we don’t know, because, it’s really none of our business.
Has anyone actually broke down the all 22, to see if we’re disiplined in gap assignments? Has anyone here charted the plays and graded oout this stuff? Obviously, we are lacking in discipline here, hence the breakdowns and gashes in the defense. Which then limits what the DC CAN actually install in practice.
Contrary to what the general public thinks, you simply can’t just think of a play or a scheme mid game and then install it on the fly. Just doesn’t work that way. Master the base set, maintain gap integrity and not be dumbasses….. unfortunately all are not true right now for defense.
The skill is there, the execution is not, hence players punching each other because some just don’t get it. (And that is something I can get behind of actually benching NON performers :::::ie the entire secondary) however per point #1. Hard to run the coverage concepts we run with no pressure on the QB. Eventually quarters/ or any variation of such will break down and someone will be open.
Fix #1, fix the defense. Opens up blitz installs. Zone Coverage concepts, etc etc etx
He missed a cut that would have been a td instead just a 10to 15 yard gain. He has decent vision he just leaves yards out there. Jefferson isn’t nearly as fast but has excellent vision and gets the most yards available with his speed.
Any truth to the rumor that Luton will ask the NCAA to consider his first year at Idaho a redshirt year, because he appeared in less than four games, and request a seventh year? Only the Beavs could get that lucky! A quarterback for life.
Was going to select the 12 games for week 3 of our pick-em pool and all but one Pac12 team(oregon/montana) has a point spread. So this week will be 11 Pac12 games, but I also have 1 open slot to fill.
Would like to hear your suggestions for which game to include for number 12?
Basically any FBS vs FBS game should have a spread and could be included.
I would suggest the Iowa vs Iowa State matchup. Maryland vs Temple opened at -4?! after they killed Syracuse!?
Or I would suggest NIU @ Nebraska with the line at -14 right now favoring Nebraska.
Take the nebraska game. Niu has shown some moxie so far and with all the hype you would think #TPB would get their shit together at some point.
Well, CBS just added the spread for the oregon game too. So now all of this week’s games will be the 12 Pac teams playing non-con games.
Thanks for the input. I was interested in Maryland because of the gaudy numbers they’ve been putting up so far this year. Might have to put them in a later week as the Pac12 teams start facing each other.
I live on the border of Iowa and I’m really tempted to go lay some $ down on Maryland, but it’s way to early to expect that every weekend.
Maryland has some serious talent recruited by the previous coach and got a high end transfer QB this season. Can’t believe Locksley is doing this.
.
Robin of Locksley?
I’m glad I’m dead. Better than living through Cal Poly running wild on our home turf.
Oof!!
