Home Football Utah @ Oregon State

Utah @ Oregon State

420

With Zack Moss upgraded to probable I’m going Utah 35, Oregon State 24. Prove me wrong with a great game plan, Tibesar. We’ve seen the Beavs finish versus a bad Pac-12 team, but until we see them finish versus a good one it’s hard to go Beavs. Should be some energy in the building with homecoming, a lot of recruits, etc, so maybe some October magic happens.

The Luton Scale might not be in play afterall. I won’t able to document down, distance, and time for each play since I’m sick and will be lying down/commenting from the phone. If someone is commenting from a laptop and has good typing skills please step up and document the plays. Thanks!

Go Beavs.

  1. You guys read paragraph two? I can’t do Luton scale in terms of typing down, distance, time, result. Too sick. If someone can we’ll go for it.

  2. 42-35 OSU! Luton goes full hero 22-32 307 yards and 3 TD. AP/Baylor combine for 207 and and 2 td. Rodriguez gets a 57 yd strip and return for td on a punt.

Gebbia does an awesome job signalling and taking notes.

What can I say I’m optimistic.

  3. First time listening to Mike Parker in years. Decades of bad football have clearly taken their toll. Dude needs some anti-depressants.

  4. Any momentum this team gained last week is gone. My not win another game this season.

How in the fuck can Utah of all schools recruit such vastly superior players? It’s fucking embarrassing.

    • state of Utah has pretty good local talent and for whatever reason, those kids don’t like to leave the state. Maybe because they’re already married with children by the time they graduate high school?

    • that was pretty blatant interference by the Ute defender (if this was the Hodgins pass?)
Grabbed Hodgins collar as he jumped for the ball and well before the ball arrived.

  5. Man, choukair’s head just isn’t right, looked dazed walking off the field. Feel bad for the kid, he knows he’s kicking poorly and keeps getting trotted out on the field

  6. Utah is on another level, especially on the lines. Apart from hodgins, I don’t think we have anyone that would start for them.

Beavs have a ways to go.

  7. “Yeah, how does Utah recruit so well considering it’s fucking Utah LOL?!”

Since joining the Pac, Utah has been ranked in 6 of 9 years, with a high of #3, and a low of #20. These are not end-of-season rankings however. 4-1 in bowl games, losing Holiday Bowl, only decent bowl they went to. Wittingham is the longest tenured coach in the Pac 12.

  8. OK, we’re not surprised a decent team with a good CB tries to take Hodgins away…is the coaching staff?

Who is going to step forward and make plays? Need more than one to do so…

    • This is dumb. That was a timing pass. No way there should have been 4 Utah guys in the backfield immediately after the snap. It’s like they new the play. Luton is playing well.

      Beavs are way overmatched.

  9. A 6′ 6″ QB who consistently gets his passes batted down is eventually going to pay the price.

What sucks is Gebbia might be thrown in a terrible situation second half, instead of a tractable problem like @ Hawaii….

  10. At the game. Making Utah look like national champions. Utes have a lot of beef on both sides of the ball. Utah is very physical, and already have a player ejected for targeting. It is obvious Beavs are not used to this physical of a team. Refs are not helping either, Ute CBS are grabbing and handling receivers well after the line of scrimmage, and saw several non-call holding. Should be 21-0….

  11. I’m all for a cool story and all… But I’ve seen enough of Champ Flemings. Lotta heart but too small for anything resembling physical play or YAC.

  12. Hey they changed kickers. Or Choker traded Jerseys so they wouldn’t throw beer at him from the terrace

Eta: maybe wine instead of beer. No one want a pinot stain on their Jersey.

    • Is Kipper the transfer that was supposed to be an upgrade?

I really hoped the Oline had developed confidence in the weak parts of the schedule to play better tonight.

      • Kipper was a transfer from Hawaii, not really an upgrade but he does decent run blocking. Eldridge was the big transfer at center but he got hurt again early and hasn’t really ever gotten into game shape.

        • BIG JIM was (is?) very high on Kipper’s potential. Guys like him are why it takes time to build a program, lots of patience required.
Big thing in second half is to see no one mentally check out.

Eldridge is supposed to return next week, but we’ve heard that before.

    • I’m just listening on the radio, but I remember hearing a few screens and Luton completing quick slants over the middle. That has to be half his completions.

It’s tough to gameplan your OL getting completely owned.

  13. I knew we’d get our asses kicked, but this is on the verge of, ‘everyone loses their starting job tonight and we’re putting backups in for those that don’t want to play tonight. ‘ try and get your spot back on Monday.’

    • body language was awful. As with the kicker, Smith thinks he’s being a stand up guy when he sticks with Luton down 35, not realizing that he’s actually punishing the guy

  14. SMITH, What the hell is Luton still in there at 42 to 0. If you won”t let Gebbia PLAY LET COLETTO OR WHOEVER IS 3RD OR 4TH STRING GET IN THERE YOU JERK.

  15. 3 and out Luton. That’s what this game has turned into. When Luton gets the nod to pass, every play is a roll out scramble to the right and he just throws it away. He’s quit. Put in Gebbia for crying out loud!

  16. Fuck luton, shitty body language and doesnt want to be out there. Hes a fucking quitter, nice 3rd down throw away with hardly any pressue.

  17. They pulled Huntley, so you’d think we would finally decide to pull Luton. What’s the point in leaving him in there for the final quarter? Does he need the extra experience?

  18. Speights has had himself a decent game. He has really looked pretty good this year. I think hes the kind of guy we can build on.

  19. ANyone got the 411 on this Alex Austin dude? I have seen him ALL game but never noticed 18 before. I remember he was a 3 star last year.

    Gebbia throws a pretty ball.
I’m not convinced this guy isn’t way better.
Small sample but he looks like a natural and leader.

  21. Anderson had alot of shitty games. Last time we got blanked was under him against UCLA in 2015. That was a horribly miserable game.

    • Wait until Washington, CW, Washington State might be a decent game, but the rest we’ll lose by 21+ if we play like this each game. Gebbia has touch and a tighter spiral. Let him start!

      • Washington state and arizona are the only possible wins. By possible I mean 10% maybe. Only because their total defense numbers are worse then hawaii (70) and Stanford (73). UCLA is at 120 now and cal poly is 103 in fbs.

        • We should have a pretty good shot. I’m skeptical that we have a chance against WSU. They will score 45+ atleast against our inexperienced/not good corners.

  22. Gebbia should have been in there from the first of the season. Poor, poor , poor, poor coaching decision Smith going with Luton who is gone after this season. Wasted giving Gebbia valuable experience that would be far more beneficial in the long run.

    • It’s a lost cause at this point. Even though luton showed his true colors on his last drive by being a fucking quitter some here will gladly let him mushroom stamp their foreheads just because hes experienced. Pathetic. Not that it’s the only problem.

  23. After that drive on the turnover by Gebbia, I really don’t understand why he’s not starting. He can actually run the option! Luton might not even be able to play in the CFL, XFL, or even arena league. So let’s stop wasting this season on Luton and put Gebbia in to get this team to gel for the future.

    • With this loss I think you are going to see alot more of that. Gonna see alot of young guns getting experience. I would like to see some of the safeties get some reps too considering we are losing all of our starting safties.

      • How drunk are you? I like your positivity, but that ain’t happening. Nothing will change luton will go out and quit some more, chocker will do whatever hes doing. DBs will not know their assignments, LBs will get caught up in the dlineman getting blown off the ball. As usual.

Not too drunk bit def have a fever. O think my expectations are just incredibly low. The beavers have been good to shit most of my life. I was 10 when we went to the fiesta bowl and spent college watching terrible effort week after week as Riely wandered into retirement. I get excited about what’s growing and the effort shown. The team keeps fighting and they are better than last year and a lightyear ahead of Anderson’s last two years. Young players are playing hard and guys who got blessed in fire last year like shemar are becoming serviceable.

Anyone who thought smith could get us to the middle of the pac in less than 4 years is a true dreamer. He took over a dumpster fire in a landfill fire. I see improvment, half time adjustments, game planning, and effort.

This place does seem to be an echo chamber of misery, I prefer to have humor and optimism to grinding depression and righteous anger.

    • I’ll try. Gonna take some time.

EDIT: Avg for 35 of the 36 passes was 2.7. Pass #18 not included in calculation; it was rated either 0, -1, or -6.
Noteworthy was the stretch at the end of the game (#29 thru #36 avg was 1.1)

      • my sense, OOB, is that Luton was subconsciously signaling to Smith, at the start of the second half, that he didn’t want to be out there; the corollary being that Gebbia deserved a chance to show what he could do.

    • JJ didn’t dress. Wouldn’t have made a difference given the line play, play calling, and his style of taking time to pick a lane.

      • The line was disrupted by Ute linebackers all night long, no run no pass. Thought the play calling was vanilla and predictable. There was a double reverse that Luton decided to keep and run for a 5 years loss — completely unacceptable — not sure what happened there.

        • If I’m thinking of the right play it was a double reverse fake. Utah lineman were in the backfield and Luton has to scramble or be sacked. So many times the offense tried misdirection or screens seemed to backfire

          • Utah misread 2 screens. One Kipper held and the other one our receiver ran straight into his blockers. All the rest they were read perfectly.

  24. Wow, the talent discrepancy across the PAC12 is huge! We just got demolished by Utah, and we dominated. UCLA. Just think about that for a minute.

  25. I’ve been to a lot of beat-downs this decade but performance was perhaps the most disgraceful; worse a couple of those Civil Wars or epic washouts vs. UW and WSU.

The most disconcerting aspect was Smith not putting Gebbia in at the start of the second half. Smith was being stubborn; trying to prove a point to his incipient critics, when it was obvious even before the first half was over that Luton had given up. Did Smith think that Luton was going to lead a 35+ point second half comeback, one of the greatest in the history of college football? Really? The game was over, Smith. Time to put in back-ups. Oddly, it was cruel to both Luton AND Gebbia not to put the latter into the game at the start of the second half.

Could have been cruel to let Gebbia get bum beat for 2 quarters by that defense. You want quality reps for qb development not getting trashed. The game was basically over so why let Utahs first string send Gebbia to therapy. He came in once Utah sent in 2nd and 3rd string and got some quality reps.

This game wasn’t fun but we have been beat down like this since 2014. UCLA blanked us in 2015 and Anderson lost by 20+ pt margins on the regular. We were overmatched and we should expect that into next year when Smith recruits and transfers become the majority of the team.

Personally I’m not unhappy with Smith at all. He makes some bad decisions with game management but I’m not sure what you would expect from a dude with less than 2 years as HC. Riley and Erickson made dumbass decisions all the time. We lost games cause we couldn’t get the ball off or whatever.

I think what people often miss with who plays is what’s best for the player. They all want to go out there and play but what’s the point of breaking the spirit of a young guy to give him shitty experience. Not all that many people can learn much good from a complete shlacking. There has been plenty of young guys getting experience on defense and I think you are going to see more of Gebbia against teams that are not brutal defenses. Smith knows our team is lacking talent so why leverage the future on bad odds so they know what it’s like to get pasted by Bernard Francis.

He pulled choker atleast, we all got our wish there O_o.

    • I waited until his first series against Utah backups and turned it off after back to back bat-downs by Utah lineman resulting in a punt. Not sure how the rest went against the backups

    • First drive was bad, 3 tipped balls. After that we forced a fumble and he put a good drive together for a td. He has good compact mechanics that gets the ball out with urgency. We’ll see of.this holds but he wasn’t staring down receivers too bad. Missed on a deep ball but otherwise accurate. He is a real danger scrambling able to seperate from line men and about even with line backers. He’s got some presence and looks like a leader. The players respond to his demeanor.

We got our ass kicked bit I saw some things that made me feel good about the future.

    Young Bright Spots:
    1) Speights played well and hard all game in place of Roberts. For a freshman he has sound technique and rarely over pursues, really looking like a future star to build on.
    2) Freshman DB Alex Austin was all over the field. Idk how many tackles he had but I saw #18 on the action constantly. He’s not great in coverage yet but for a bench warming frosh I am more interested in effort and the dude had it.
    3) Musgrave will catch a shitload of passes in his career. Big, fast and quick off the line. His blocking is serviceable but he also has plenty of filling out to do. You can also tell he just loves hauling in a pass, doesn’t wait for the ball, reaches out and grabs it!

Edit: 4) Halftime heart on defense. The defense played really well after getting yelled at in the locker room. They responded for atleast 2 drives without giving up points and attacking. After that they ran out of steam with the offense only bothering to play for 35 seconds or so.

Appreciate your input, think it’s pretty spot on and a good analysis. This game like against oklahoma state shows how we have several positions that we are shy on. You can play defense well and then give up a 4th down heave for a touchdown and changes the game. You can make several drives into opposing team territory, but a holding call can destroy you. We had no run game against that d-line and pressure into the backfield all night. It takes time to build up a team like Utah has had with wittingham. Just as he said before the game, football is all about mismatches. He knew where to exploit our mismatches on defense and our o-line. We have plenty of guys who can play at this level. Play calling was fine. Defense played okay. But another year or two of recruiting and growth to fill up those spots before we are competitive game in and game out.

      • Well fuck me for looking for positives. I can see why people here tend to be caustic assholes, y’all chase away anyone who has anything positive to say. I think I’ll just quit OSU forums for another 5 years. I could have more fun watching the Utah game on slo-mo

        • There is nothing positive about a 52-7 home ass whipping. On homecoming. Where your 6th year QB who’s described as a “leader” basically quit on his teammates in the 4th quarter.

          Not one fucking thing.

    • 4) Utah let up because they were ahead by 7 TD’s? Nah. Couldn’t be that. What you call “heart” I call Whittingham calling off the dogs. Dude. They were up 49-0. 49. To ZERO.

Smith and his merry band of misfits got out coached. By a lot.

I expect that we will play much better vs cal, now that our euphoric high from the UCLA win is gone. Hopefully Avery Roberts and some others will be back from injuries

  28. No matter where you stand on the whole Luton or Gebbia thing I thought it was a mistake not to start Gebbia for the 2nd half. It was 42-0, the game was over, give Gebbia at least 1 drive with the other starters, that kind of experience is so valuable.

    • Im 50/50 on that. I don’t know Gebbia or how he responds to negative experience. It wouldn’t just be the OSU starters on the field.

Bottom line, and I called it, this was a poor offensive game plan. Smith needed to get the ball out of Luton’s hands quickly with two step drop and slants, bubble screens, and throw back screens. He also needed to use misdirection to use Utah’s aggressive play against them with trap plays, sprint draws, and have used fly sweeps to try and freeze Utah LBs. Instead, he tried to play them straight up man for man and you could see the disaster unfold during the first possession. I expected that defensive performance but would have hoped JS and Lindgren would have easily recognized the neef for deception and misdirection in game preparation. I’m not suggesting beavs would have won but they might have been able to keep Utah a little more off balance. BTW, I think Utah is a more complete offensive and defensive team than the schmux. I’m still not quite sure how USC beat Utah.

      • Utah’s offense is definitely more put together than hole’s but defensively it’ll play out the same. Expect Cal’s defense to stuff their sweaty balls on Kipper’s neck all day also. Although Cal’s offense is a shit show with that backup QB.

  29. Love Benny Beaver throw back logo. Team did a tremendous job of honoring the long tradition we have of getting embarrassed while wearing that logo.

      • Please, GA’s teams crapped their big boy pants on a regular basis. Non-competitive football was the norm at the end there. This was just one horrible loss, not Anderpants-level consistent ineptitude.

        • 2
          1

I agree. Didn’t see the whole team giving up. They were badly outmatched but Anderson’s teams have up on games they could have won on the regular

  30. This is Luton’s last season. There is no way Smith is going to bench him, it’s not his style. Smith is more concerned about establishing the trust of his players right now than he is about actually winning games. If he benched Luton now he would likely damage the team morale especially if they didn’t immediately start winning games. With the defense and offensive line we have right now, he doesn’t want to gamble on Gebbia.
