Open Scrimmage + Fall Camp Continued II

Saturday’s scrimmage should give insight into the depth chart and player progress. We’ll finally get to see the action rather than read about it, which will allow us to further refine our opinions. Right now we’re mostly going off last year and reporters.

As mentioned in the prior thread, feel free to email me facts, opinions, and observations if you’re going to the scrimmage. I can aggregate it all and make a post-scrimmage thread if there’s enough good stuff.

It looks like you guys are going to get some incredible quasi-Fall (75 high with mixed skies) weather. Enjoy if you’re lucky enough to go.

Hopefully enough of the important guys play and its serious enough to be able to take much from it. A lot of times the big names sit out and it’s just a glorified practice with basic plays.

I’m hoping to see Sio, Musgrave, the receiver transfers, something from the RBs, and if the secondary continues to force turnovers. Also how the QBs perform compared to last time. I should say hear about as I’m not able to be there. Hope some of you can go and give us some good notes and observations.

    • Since it’s open to the public and a late-in-camp one, I’m thinking we’ll see a lot of the important players. At least for a quarter or half.

      • Ya it’s kind of a catch 22 kind of thing you want to see them and how they perform but don’t want them to be injured just for a scrimmage. I would say keep out the known talent especially if they have an injury history like Eldrige, Lowe, Grant, Robert’s, and Gumbs. Although Gumbs has hardly played in any games I still think we know what we have in him and would rather not risk him in a scrimmage.

  2. I think the only thing we really need to see is major push by the d-line against our Oline #1 squad. If 1s and 2s on d-line both get push and create problems, then this could be a harbinger of that elusive ‘special season’.

All other areas will benefit from an improved d-line more than any other position group. I suspect that Sio will be a difference maker in depth and performance, Schad is a wild card if he even sees the field this year. D-line depth may be better than we realize since the staff didn’t panic and become frantic when 2 potential starters transferred out in the summer.

    • I don’t know why people suddenly are going off the deep end with this Schad injury. Smith said they were hoping to have himbfor game 1 but now seems like he might miss a couple of weeks. To me that seems like should be able to go at least halfway through the season. Could he miss the whole season? Sure but at this point there isn’t any reason to think thats the case at this point.

I think Sio could be a difference maker too. In his interview his arms looked defined for someone with his size compared to most other lineman. He’s not just big but very strong supposedly one of the strongest if not strongest on the team. If Miller plays center against him in the scrimmage that could be interesting. He would be giving up almost 100lbs to him.

      • Thomas “The Difference” Sio?

“Big Diff” Sio? He IS listed at 347.

        Just “The Difference?”

I think the guys going to end up being a force. This is not the former Riley/Cavanaugh approach “He was just standing around so we moved him to D-line.? This is a strong player who is moving early enough in his career to make a difference.

He’ll have to learn the position, but he’ll make some impacts this year and next year be taking double teams from opposing offensive lines.

      • I agree. He also isn’t the size we need him at yet. He is great for the rotation but it’s not like he’s head and toes above Skelton. We need that depth at the position but Schad being out of rotation for a few game isn’t really changing anything but how much rest they get and how often undersized players are in the middle.

I hope all the games get televised. I am not an anti-vaccination person, me, the Mrs. and my kids all were vaccinated early on.
I just don’t want to play this stupid “show us your papers” game.

      • 14

Yes! I’m all pro choice to each your own. I mask up and am respectful of everybody. I also am not a fan of the way this seems to be trending tho.

    • Honest question: are football games really a pro-infection environment even though they’re outside? I haven’t seen any data that supports this, but I don’t read everything that’s out there.

      • I would think the tailgates are the biggest issue. Plus walking around in the concourse, waiting in line to get in the game, bathroom lines, etc.

Delta variant has really changed the game. The R rate is much higher than the original strain. Seemed like we were on course for normal gamedays, no restrictions. Similar to last summer. Everything seemed to be on track and got derailed before the season started.

But this time around, the full season is a certainty.

      • Purdue and the big 10 probably have way more people betting in general. Without paying attention to the Beavs Purdue looks like a good bet to win.

        • So, not a lack of Beavs fans but, instead, a surplus of boilermakers?……Sounds about right. Add in the usual East Coast Bias and you have an opportunity for Beavs supporters.

Speaking of bets, BetMGM is -135 if you take the over on 4.5 wins for the season.
It’s +2500 for the Beavs winning the North.

    • He celebrated by missing practice yesterday. Hope it’s not a lingering injury. You may get Overman as the game 1 starter after all. Unless the vax policy irks his dad to the point he pulls Jake out of OSU.

I’m not going to label him. Just think 2 years in a row of not getting to see your son play in person cant be easy for parents.
Although I dont think OSU and UofO will be alone with this policy this year.

Trump was booed in a recent speech for encouraging people to get the vaccine. The vaccine is here because of Trump.
People who are not wanting is not because of any blind allegiance to anything. They are making a personal choice based on where they believe the risks to be for them. The only tie to the right is that the right believe in personal freedom.
The anger at people not taking the vaccine is illogical. Vaccines in general work because they enable you to fight off the virus and does not really keep you from being a carrier. Non-vaccinated people are more likely to show symptoms and this makes it easier to isolate. The risk for not getting the vaccination is to the person not getting it. In our society we allow people to take risks with their own safety all the time. Why is this different?

          • I think it’s just a way to make people point the finger at one another in the name of justifying centralization and force, as opposed to being honest about what we do and do not know about the virus/vaccines. Our culture has broken down so much that we refuse to have honest conversations with neighbors about matters this serious. Humans are tribalistic by nature, but in the face of something this serious, it is tearing the country apart.

            6

‘the right believe in personal freedom’ is the only tie vax refusal has to the right? That’s funny. But I guess you could say they’re expressing their personal freedom by being duped by misinformation and by being around others when symptomatic.

  3. Curious to see today if QBs are getting the ball out quickly, or if receivers are waiting for it. Also if DLine seems to get a push on a good OLine.

    • Seems like the offense is converting TDs consistently.

Which should be happening, because last week the defense knew what was coming.

  4. Vidlak throws behind the WR and that results in a pick 6. Gebbia doesn’t play at all today. He’s either #1 and locked it up or hurt.

    Scrimmage is over now.

    • Ya not much to take away but injuries. Nolan and Noyer threw TDs while Vidlak threw a pick. Pope had a good day. Hayes went 4-6 with a long of 54.

Unfortunate about Jones as Purdue is a passing team with good WRs. I think Austin was going to start over him tho which is a little concerning after watching highlights from last season. He got roasted against Cal last year. At least Robinson looks like he’s improved greatly. Hopefully Wright can handle Bell but that’s a big ask. That kid is good.

  5. Havent gotten total confirmation, but I think 2022 recruits Mark Nabou(OG/DT) and Isaiah Ward(OLB/TE) were possibly at the scrimmage today.

  6. Purdue HC talks about their second scrimmage, also held today. Says, “As good as the defense played last week, they were really bad today.”…Brohm said the defense suffered from a few “mental busts” that will be looked at on film.
He said the coaches and players have to realize what went wrong, and they have to improve.

He, like Smith, isn’t ready to name a QB.

      • The offense around him wasn’t good except for a couple players. I that Mannion did good considering he had a lot of defense in his face.

Angry – looks like Z Wilson played a very good half against Green Bay yesterday. I never did see him play at BYU. I thought i saw a note in here once he was recruited by OSU? The guy does have good mobility and an arm, seems to see the field well in the NY/GB highlights I saw, keeps his eyes down the field, and can move well.

  8. Just a few (way too many, now that I’ve finished) of my completely untrained, inexperienced thoughts from yesterdays scrimmage:

QBs: Seemed like Noyer was little more comfortable handling the rush and had a little bit stronger arm than Vidlak. That’s not a criticism of Vidlak – he is the real deal and will only get stronger as he matures. He looked extremely polished for a true freshman, like he’s gotten a lot of private coaching. That said, it felt though like they were running a more balanced, complex offense with Noyer whereas with Vidlak, the coaches seemed to be calling nothing but short pass plays and letting him build confidence. Long story short, Noyer seems to give the Beavs the best chance to win in Week One, but if you started Vidlak, he could probably catch/pass Noyer around Week 6. I don’t know what was going on with Gebbia (still injured, presumed starter?). He participated in all of the pre-scrimmage QB drills, but then put on a headset. I know this sounds a little counter intuitive, but I could see Smith naming Vidlak the number 2 (to get him PT) and letting Gebbia and Nolan fight it out for 1st and 3rd string.

OL: Seemed to have legit size (with OSU linemen you always have to start there) but gave up a few too many negative plays and didn’t break any long runs (that I remember). I was also disappointed they weren’t able to dominate the smaller, undermanned DL more. When I comes to OSU’s line play, I have to wait until I see them line up against a legit P5 team before I can tell what we’ve really got. I’ve been fooled too many times after seeing them scrimmage against each other.

RB, WR: No RBs jumped out (like a Jefferson). Seemed like if there was a little bit of a hole, they could competently get you 3 or 4 yards but that was it. No jukes or broken tackles once the OL got them into the second level. Same with the WRs. The QBs were completing passes, but mostly just short passes, nothing spectacular. Also saw Beason not work to get open on a busted play which I didn’t like. And whats with all the little guys? Just my personal preference to see more big bodies like a Villamin or Hodgins. Vidlak did make a perfect contested throw to a big target (didn’t get the WR’s name) in the corner of the endzone, but he dropped it. Best pass of the day for any QB. I guess overall, I’m a little concerned that nobody stood out and I’ll be interested to see if any real playmakers emerge from either of these two position groups.

TE: Speaking of big – Musgrave. Noyer went to him a lot in the opening series – like he will be a big part of the offense. He also was practicing his golf swing on the sideline. Teagan Quitoriano didnt dress – injured?

DL: During pre-scrimmage drills, I counted only 9 players in this group. Overall, they seem smallish and depth is a concern. When the entire D lined up, it didn’t fit my eye because there seemed to be so little size distinction between the DL and LB. I know I’m not writing anything the coaching staff isn’t aware of, but until they can finally fix it, the Beavs will continue to be at a disadvantage to other P5s. To be fair, the offense wasn’t exactly running all over them, but as I wrote above, I need to see our linemen go against another school’s linemen before I can really tell where they are at. One plus – no fat guys.

LB: Great size – I think the coaches are relying on these guys to plug holes and clean up after the D Line. Do other teams take advantage of the LB’s size by making them chase RBs on pass routes? No question though these guys are probably our best unit. John McCartan (my favorite player because he just always seems to be around the ball) was out, but don’t know why. Roberts and the freshman Mascarenas both had huge hits.

DB: Nothing really stood out – plus I’m running out of steam. No long runs or long completions – so that’s a good sign. The interception return was also a positive, but I thought the receiver could have caught the ball even though it wasn’t a great throw. The offense also should have brought Wright down about midfield – he should have never escaped. On the negative side, they blew the coverage on Nolan’s TD throw, but that was probably 3rd, 4th string guys.

K: I wouldn’t write anything about kickers, but Everett Hayes is the greatest kicker to ever kick anything in the history of kicking things. He had a 37 yarder that even cleared the kicking net. He just sort of flicks the ball with his foot – kind of like how Vidlak flicks it when he throws – and he’s accurate. Ivan Bolden’s little brother looked very shifty on punt returns, but I always reserve judgement on little guys until I see them in a real game. The punt jugs machine was very also impressive – 60 yards, perfect turnover every time – I want one.

PS. The crowd was way more than 100 to 200 – closer to the 600 range. You had to have a mask on to enter but about 60% pulled down or took off their mask once they sat down. They announced that masks were mandatory about three times, but it that didn’t seem to change anyone’s behavior.

    • Awesome, thanks.

I think Gebbia starts week 1 if he’s 100%. If he’s not it will be Noyer. Vidlak is good but that pick probably sealed the deal with him not being in the mix this year. He’ll be very good one day.

      • 1
        2

That pick decides nothing with Vidlak in the picture this year. That will depend on how well Gebbia plays more than what Vidlak does in an August scrimmage. I’m guessing he’ll start at some point this year but I’m also predicting 4-8 and a 3-0 OC start.

    • 1
      1

“Extremely polished” is exactly how I would describe Vidlak when I watched him at the spring scrimmage. He’s legit and will start at some point. Agree that he needs to bulk up to protect himself from big hits- that might be the best reason not to start him this year.

      • Vidlak was on my step son’s 7v7 football team this last year+. The team is head coached by former hole WR Lavasier Tuinei, and the coaches do a pretty decent job, definitely better than the average Oregon high school coach.

From what I’ve seen, dude just has “it”, same uncoachable factor like a Zabransky or Kellen Moore type QB.

  9. Didn’t have time yesterday after the scrimmage but here are some notes from yesterday.

The No. 1 offenses and defenses played a series or two, but a lot more of the second and third stringers got the reps. So hard to really decipher much from the scrimmage itself.

Gebbia didn’t play which was a surprise (OLive’s Daschel says it was soreness). Noyer looked okay. Some good and some bad. He didn’t look very decisive. Best QB was Vidlak. He has the best arm strength at OSU since Ryan Katz. He really needs to bulk up as he is much smaller in person than his listed height and weight and he also needs to stop staring down receivers. Both are addressable as he is still only a true freshman.

Best offensive player of the scrimmage was Pope. He outperformed four stars like Dunmore and Tongue. He reminded me of a Shane Morales type receiver. Isn’t going to wow you with athleticism but somehow gets open and keeps moving the sticks with timely first downs.

Defense seemed to send five guys a lot of times. Either Tibesar feels like he needed to find aggressive ways to apply more pressure on the opposing QB or he heels much better about the secondary play to better cover and tackle in isolated space. Not sure if the injury to Jones and Robinson changes his thinking.

Best player on defense during the scrimmage was Wright. He covered receivers well and had that pick six on the tipped passes when Harrison couldn’t handle the pass from Vidlak. Wished there was someone on the DL that jumped out during the scrimmage, but no one really stood out. More of the same, DL can’t disengage enough to apply pressure on the QB.

    • Disappointed some if the faster, bigger receivers don’t seem to be distinguishing themselves(?). Was hoping Tongue, Gould, Dunmore might really separate from the rest and be real thread. Maybe by UI.

          • Where was that? I never saw any of those reports. I’m expecting Harrison to pick up where he left off last season as well as Beason taking the next step. It sounds like Lindsay has been playing well and he was performing in the last few games last season. Hopefully he’s got it figured out and can play up to his potential. There were good reports from tongue early on in camp and Dunmore started showing up as of late including a TD catch in the scrimmage. Champ stealing reps isn’t helping their progress at all. I’m not even sure I want him kick returning anymore with the athletes that we have now. I would rather see Bradford, Lindsay, Lowe, Gould, Irish, or Harrison back there. Any time Champ gets a seam someone reaches out an arm and that’s enough to knock him down. He has 0 tackle breaking ability.

    Thanks for the reports!

OT: Firmer BSU coach Hardin creating frustration @ Auburn:

“ There is a lot to like about this coach from Idaho, but his first preseason on The Plains cannot be included among them. Not after refusing to promote vaccination for COVID-19 among his team caused confusion within his program, and then testing positive for the virus halfway through fall camp. He went into quarantine on Friday, reporting that he was without symptoms. Is Harsin vaccinated? Is he not vaccinated? He refuses to say, but these are not questions anyone should have to ask of a public figure who is paid millions of dollars to manage a key asset of Auburn University, and, most importantly, protect the well being and set a strong example for the boys he has been entrusted to develop into young men.”

Glad to see Smith and staff avoiding the distraction that Rolovich and Hardin are perpetuating…

  11. Daschel with a report up 6 hours ago. He suggests it’s a 2-man race between Gebbia and Noyer, with Gebbia’s soreness/recovery maybe the deciding factor heading down the stretch.

  12. New “Major addition” coming in for OSU football tonight according to Nemac. Any idea who? If we aren’t allowed to spoil I understand I just want to know how good they are

    • I dont know anything for certain, but keeping in mind that i had seen some activity around Mark Nabou(and Isaiah Ward) this weekend. Nabou would definitely qualify as a big addition.

        • In his junior highlights he plays tackle. Dude gets pulled on counters a lot and he hits guys like a tank. I would keep him on the OL, he had very fast feet, athletic and a huge frame.

Don’t see any video of him playing on defense.

  13. I’m going to make a gut bomb prediction. (Based on absolutely no inside info, but just the fact that we’re supposedly getting someone tonight and the recent activity I’m seeing online)

I’m going with 4* DE Mathias Malaki-Donaldson as my guess.

And I’ll probably miss the announcement because i’ll be watching a movie with my family tonight. But he is who i would have on notify.

If you enjoy the CW, check out the CW vintage series. Just two parts but it’s very well done. It’s what inspired the series and is animated by Gendy Tartakovsky of Dexter’s Lab and Samurai Jack

      • Netflix occasionally has these dramatized documentary series that are decent to watch. I watched one on pirates the last few nights. It’s at least educational and entertaining at the same time

        • They have some really good limited documentary series that are usually about true crime. I think the aaron Hernandez was one of them. The looming tower was good on hulu. It’s about the rivalry and not Sharing information between the fbi and and CIA that led to 911. Quite a few good actors in it as well.

      • Can say Oaks Christian is a known CA school for football.

That + rest of what others have mentioned (who made offers, etc) seems like this is an excellent player to get a commitment from.

    • This is great! We’re getting more and more recruits who are game size. Incredible how much things can change in 4 years.

      • Incredible how things can change when you quickly ditch bad fits (Riley, Andersen), too. Smith has to get results on the field, but he’s destroying those guys in the recruiting department, which should eventually translate to the field.

        • Yeah, he’s been basically playing with freshmen and sophomores with some plug and play transfers. No excuses this year on the field. We finally have a team that is properly P-5 physically, time to make a jump.

This is a huge year for Tibs IMO. He finally has adequate bodies to play a 3-4 so if we don’t see a big uptick then he needs replaced.

      • “”It was amazing,” Malaki-Donaldson said. “Oregon State has something big cooking up in Corvallis. Coach [Jonathan] Smith and his whole staff were on point and very welcoming to me and my family.

“I believe in the authenticity of coach Smith and his whole staff and that’s hard to find in other programs.”

“…I visited Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor and LSU. After the trip to LSU, I flew back home to fly out for my official to Oregon State and then did a one-on-one workout at UCLA.

He chose Oregon State over double-digit offers from programs such as: Arizona, ASU, Colorado, Florida State, LSU, Michigan State, Tennessee, and others.”

Pretty impressive he thinks the OSU staff are uniquely authentic after that whirlwind of visits and offers.

        https://247sports.com/Article/Mathias-Malaik-Donaldson-Oregon-State-Beavers-commitment-Oaks-Christian-edge-rusher-169508438/

        • Dang that’s crazy. Maybe not the hugest rated recruit we have had but probably one of the best offer sheets/visit list that we actually won.

I looked back at GA and Riley classes and the closest facsimile to MMD for Anderson were Garcia (6’4” 215) and Ham (6’2”, 206). Under Riley (late years) it was probably Dylan Wynn (6’2” 235), Barnett (6’2” 223) and Jwasha James (6’2” 220).

MMD per Twitter is 6’5” 230. He can gain 40-60 lbs and play DE or put on 5-15 and be a solid EDGE. The 3-4 has a big advantage that there’s a spot for tall athletic pass rushers without totally remaking their bodies.

          • I kind of hate the 3-4. Even with some of the best NFL D’s of all times like the Ravens, Ray Lewis was still making the majority of his tackles well down field. At least that’s how it seemed watching it. Just seems so easy to run against a 3-4 every time I watch it.

          • 1
            1

You need big d lineman to run it. Eat up blocks so the linebackers can roam free. MLB play sideline to sideline in a 3-4. They don’t blitz that much. His job was to read the play and react. When his dline played well, lewis was free to hit gaps and make plays in the backfield.

OLB do the pass rushing in in the 3-4, why Terrell Suggs had so many sacks in that defense and lewis so few.

Same in the OSU 3-4. Why rashed Jr had all the sacks a couple years ago and Roberts/speights have all the tackles.

          • Yeah. I get that, and it all makes sense, but how does it actually perform? Would be curious to see a large data set on the 3-4 vs 4-3, especially in the run game. That’s where to my eye it fails. But it’s based off observation and could be totally wrong. My guess is the 3-4 would yield a bit higher YPC for opponents. In college where it’s harder to find proper NT, the skew might be even greater. Those are my expectations. I’d be very curious to see reality if anyone can dig up numbers.

          • Biggest weakness in the 3-4 is running. It’s a pass protection and sideline control defense. Weak spot is always going to be in the middle. That said the weak spot is 3-5 yards and long runs are much less likely with all the speed and extra personnel in the secondary.

A good 3-4 keeps the qb and hb contained in the pocket by eliminating outside runs and outside scrambles. The soft spot will always be the center of the field on runs and passes as you essentially have 2 dudes covering from goal line to 12 yards deep.

You can expect plenty of yards but they should be tough yards and big explosive plays should be far less common. In many ways it’s meant to extend an offenses touches and frustrate them into mistakes. A great QB and RB can usually rip the 3-4 to pieces.

  14. (Updating this older post with more current info)

    Current verbal commits(12 total):
    QB-Travis Throckmorton
    RB-Damien Martinez
    OL-Luka Vincic
    OL-Jacob Strand
    OL/C-Dylan Lopez
    DT-Quincy Wright
    ILB-Melvin Jordan
    ILB-Kord Shaw
    DB-Carlos Mack
    TE- Jack Velling
    DE-Takari Hickle
    DE-Mathais Malaki-Donaldson

So if we’re taking around 20 players in this class, we’re still looking at around 7-8 more players to add. You’d have to think a few will go towards transfers, so I’ll cut that down to 6 more actual true freshmen. The players I’m listing are the positions I think we’ll see being recruited to fill out this class. This isn’t a definitive pecking order since nobody would ever share that type of info outside of the team, so think of it as my best guess on how we’d like to fill out the class. Also, I’ve left off guys that we have higher on the list but have committed elsewhere already or left us out of their Top X lists (Aisea Moa is an exception). So if a David Bailey or Colston Loveland decided to re-consider OSU, they’d automatically jump to the top of the list at their respective positions. I just don’t think those are realistic scenarios. Also, there’s always the potential for a SDSU or Utah State commit to flip late in the process to OSU, but I haevn’t listed those types of guys.

Potential athletes still being recruited by position:
OL – Sam Yoon, Mark Nabou
DT-Mark Nabou, Dallas Vakalahi(LDS Mission bound)
WR – Sam Mason (Official visit Oct 2nd), Juan Wilson, Cody Hagen, Quincy Burroughs, Xavier Van
DE – Isaiah Ward, Kyle Thompson, Hunter Lysholm
OLB- Shakaun Bowser, Harrison Taggart, Aisea Moa, Connor Kelley
CB- Jeramiah Earby, Keionte Scott, Lorenzell Dubose

You’ll notice I’ve added Mark Nabou back to the list. After he decommitted to UW, he’s had several schools still after him. But I’ve also heard some of those schools have filled up, and OSU plans to stay agressive in pursuing him. Also, most teams like him on the OL, but OSU could take him on either side. Has good DT size. Anyway, not a likely future commitment, but one worth keeping an eye on.

    • Mark Nabou is why Smith stays flexible in his recruiting numbers. Could maybe be another Sio type conversion If they do decide to go that direction. The DT room would really have some great size then.

      • Maybe, if they expand class size suddenly. Would screw things up for everybody though.
Not sure how they can implement that in the middle of a recruiting cycle.
Maybe they’ll just change the transfer rules slightly to allow more bodies to come in that way and leave them out of the 25 cap calculation.

  15. Noticed Oregon just offered one of OSU’s top remaining 2022 targets today. Juco CB Keionte Scott.
Considering how well they’vre been recruiting highschool talent, the fact that they’re going after a JUCO DB this early in the 2022 cycle makes me think theyre about to give the 2 airsoft players the boot.

    • If so, props to them for holding players accountable even when they’re good players. This seems like nothing compared to the crap they’ve swept under the rug in the past.

        • I’m not referring to the homeless people part, but I definitely knew guys in college that shot random people with airsoft guns. And paintball guns. And eggs. Drunk people stumbling back from the bars at 2AM were usually the preferred targets. I don’t know, just seems like dumb college kids being dumb college kids…the risk could depend on the airsoft gun that you’re using I guess.

To me that’s more in the stealing gay sheep or flipping a golf cart category than the sexual assault, stealing laptops, driving 120 MPH while high… category.

          • Alex sounds like he owns an airsoft gun and may or may not have shot it and random people before

Which whether you have it haven’t, is way worse than flipping a golf cart.

          • Lol don’t own an airsoft gun (or any gun). Have done airsoft with friends but definitely have never shot – or seen someone shoot – a random person.

Honestly I just knew a lot of people in college who did all kinds of of crazy stupid stuff – not malicious but often dangerous – and that headline doesn’t jump off the page at me. Yes targeting homeless people is messed up, and menacing people from a car makes it worse. But I still think there’s a big jump from that to much of the other stuff that Ducks have gotten wrist slaps for in the recent past.

Speaking of Angie becoming a realtor:

    1. She reminds me of Annette Bening in American Beauty. “I’m going to sell this house!” Her poor husband. I imagine his life is a lot like Spacey’s.
    2. Is this further evidence people don’t care about the Beavs (or NCAA football)? Her site has become a ghost town.

Traffic on AB is about the same as always, but I notice comments are down. People on Twitter seem super apathetic, whereas in the past there would be discussions about certain things. Now there’s silence. I thought maybe it was me (ha ha!), but it seems it’s everywhere. Angie must have seen this and changed careers.

Hard to be as enthusiastic after COVID taking a lot of excitement out of last season.

I hope we can come out of the gate strong and beat Purdue in the opener. I think you will get a lot of dormant fans waking back up again. Need a freaking winning season!!!

    • Most beaver fans I know don’t seem to live vicariously through college sports (like SEC fans). If that is accurate, and consistent across OSU alumni, perhaps they’re just not coming back to sports after a year+ of COVID and other priorities taking precedence?

    • Agree it seemed to happen right around the time of Covid. Fans took up other hobbies, and maybe they liked those more? It will be very interesting to see how this plays out. Now we have NIL (bearish) on top of the Covid exit. Angie discussing this on her podcast would be interesting, but I think it’s too honest for someone like her – she seems to like keeping uncomfortable things superficial and at a distance.

I wonder how much of the lack of enthusiasm is the political involvement of academia and the individual athletes. It coincided with the pandemic which may make it hard to know the actual cause. NBA, NFL, and the Olympics have had dramatically reduced viewers. I think celebrities often overestimate their importance. NCAA football is on a slippery slope as has been talked about quite a bit on this site. But, one potential reason not really discussed on this site is alienating large portions of the fan base. People tend not to appreciate being told they are bad people by their entertainment. They look to college sports as an escape from the challenges of life not an extra helping of the same. The break in new sports coverage provides a reset for people to realize the world doesn’t stop without sports. It will be interesting to see how quickly it rebounds.

      • 2
        2

Good comment. I know my parents completely stopped watching the NFL after the Kaepernick thing. Politics getting involved is definitely a factor. Think it is a factor even here on AB. Trying to clean that up.

        • Yeah… trying to refind my previous love for Beaver football. I still follow it but not like I used to.

For much of the last 30 years I listened to Mike Parker on the radio. Never watched the games on TV up until a few years ago. For some reason, hearing the game live then going back and watching the highlights a few days later just made it way more enjoyable.

          • There’s plenty of merit to that. Nostalgia, emotion transfer and more info. Watching on tv it’s so refined and the announcers are not associated with the team. It’s just sterile in comparison. I like syncing mike with the game but I am usually watching a recording these days.

          • 2
            2

I grew up listening to Parker and really want to like him, but he sounds so depressed all the time now. It’s like he caught the blues from MR during the end of his tenure and never recovered.

          • Idk, he’s pretty good when his teams are winning. He’s glum otherwise.

I do remember when the drunken napkin eating recording dropped one of my first thoughts was, “this is what 30 years of beaver fandom reduces you to”

        • I’d add the mindless statements to stir the pot drive people away as well. I’ll still check back to get recruiting info and tidbits such as scrimmage insight but those what if topics get old. Quickly. Same reason I stopped watching espn morning shows.

        • My father graduated from Oregon State in 1966-67; drove down to see them lose in the Rose Bowl.

He was a regular ticket purchaser for away games when those were in California for decades.

As an alumni, he made the decision to stop supporting Beavers football about a few years before the pandemic. The reason he gave was because he disliked the general attitude players displayed towards fans during the “walk” to the stadium for home games.

I’ll paraphrase… but it was something like, “they acted like they were super stars, rather than students”

This might come across as cantankerous. And it is only an anecdote of one person? I think it’s indicative of the much deeper changes occurring in sports.

      • 2
        12

That whole stick to sports fallacy argument has been proven as a non starter from a data perspective consistently time and time again. To put it bluntly. The sports where racist white people make up a much larger percentage of the viewing psychographic like the NHL, Nascar, and Golf are also all down. Sign of the times. Not some anti-woke backlash like so many seek to fetishize.

        • 9
          1

That is funny, data and statistics on this would be so subjective that they are meaningless. That is part of what I was saying above. There are so many variables involved in this that you would never be able to prove or disprove any hypothesis as to a single reason for the drop.
I was posing a potential reason for the drop based on anecdotal evidence that I’ve heard.
You have no evidence to disprove my thought any more than I have to prove it.
I do personally know for myself I haven’t watched an NBA game in years because I don’t care for the product and even more with the messaging of the billionaires telling me how I should react to any situation.

      • That’s a good point and an interesting dynamic. I don’t want dum athlete tropes and coach speak, but don’t want preaching either. But even most announcers/color guys are uninstalling and I prefer sound off,

          • Hhaha yea.. like most things that hyper “political” tide has come and gone. For me equality and justice aren’t “political” but that’s a whole separate issue with equational avoidance that we can speak to separately.

People that really like sports will always find ways to watch them. I think the dissipation has more to do with the drop off of the casual fan during covid to peruse other interests. Once society gets to whatever this new version of normal will be and we get more compelling story lines the casual fans will be back and the data will normalize.

          • Casual fans make up a much larger population than rabid fans for any college or professional sports team. Just reading this blog for years shows that while we all “enjoy” the beavs, there is love of music, camping, hunting, fishing, investing, history, arts, etc…. Often those threads were met with more passion than sports.
Ultimately, this is s money question and will people spend their money to support their teams in the new world. Time will tell.

    • Quarterbacks Sam Noyer, Chance Nolan and Sam Vidlak took turns with the various offensive units. Noyer was 8 of 16 for 94 yards, Nolan 6 of 9 for 42 yards, and Vidlak 13 of 21 for 113 yards and an interception. Noyer and Nolan each threw for a touchdown.

  17. Another season picked to finish at the bottom of the division…OOC schedule is boring…our only exciting offensive player from last year is gone.

There’s understandably not a lot of buzz around football right now. There aren’t a ton of questions to ask and debate because so much is unknown at this point. Even the buzz around JS returning is gone because he’s given us nothing but losing seasons thus far.

If all the guarded optimism around here is justified, the buzz will be back. We were so close last season and we seem to have upgraded a few areas this year. We’ll see in a few weeks.

    6

After doing my annual reading on the rest of the conference, I would love to have some predictions to share, but there’s really not much separation at this point. It’s really more like there’s a few tiers.

    Bottom tier
    WSU, Arizona, Cal, Stanford, OSU
There are some obvious bottom feeders like WSU, Arizona, and Cal, but WSU and Arizona both have reasons they could surprise people this year. Arizona always has decent talent and they brought in the best DC in the country. WSU’s offense is always tricky to stop and they managed to be a tough out last year with a true frosh QB. Stanford could be surprisingly bad. They were underpowered last year, lost their best players, and will be breaking in a new QB (never mind that he’s an former 5-star…) I don’t know how to spin things optimistically for Cal other than maybe bringing in Musgrave as OC will shake things up. Beau Baldwin was the obvious weak link in past years.

Yes, I know everyone’s optimistic about the Beavs this year, but the only units that don’t have a LOT to prove are the LB’s and OL. The roster looks good on paper, but I’m sure we all have some anchoring bias going on based off miserable previous years.

    Middle tier
    Colorado, UCLA, Washington

Colorado has a lot of talent coming back. Defense will be solid and they’ll have a good running game. QB is a big question mark handing the reins to an inexperience freshman, but they managed to get by last year with Noyer (a converted safety) backstopped by the same running game and defense. Their floor is high, but their ceiling is high. UCLA under Chip has been like OSU under JS: slowly inching forward and seemingly always on the verge of breaking out. They’re sort of like USC-lite to where they have some really talented players and some big question marks. Washington is on a lot of top 25 lists, but they played an even shorter season than everyone else last year and won some close games that could have gone either way (like ours). I’m not convinced by their passing game, but the defense and running game should be good. It’s tough to say because they were breaking in a lot of new guys last year, and they didn’t have a lot of time to prove themselves.

    Top tier
    Nike, USC, Arizona State, Utah

Nike returns Verdell and Dye for what feels like Year 8, and they’ll have a good OL like usual under Mario. The defense is a pretty big question mark outside of Thibodeaux, but it will help to have one of the best pass rushers in the country. Their schedule is as favorable as possible, avoiding ASU and USC.

USC has the most proven QB in the conference, really good skill players, and NFL Talent on defense. They also have a questionable OL and their defense looks mediocre. Their schedule is favorable, as they miss Washington and Nike.

Arizona State is like Colorado, only with a potential NFL QB. Daniels had a down year last year, but he has the talent to be better than Slovis. If Daniels gets hot, they look like the best team in the conference.

Utah’s biggest weakness last year (and much of Whittingham’s career) was QB play, so they brought in a legit, proven P5 QB in Charlie Brewer. The defense will be good, as always, and their running game looks good (even though they’re breaking in a new starting RB).

If I had to pick, Utah looks like the best of the bunch in the South, though USC and ASU look really good.
Nike and UW are a toss-up in the North, because they both have easy schedules and pretty good returning pieces. OSU is the darkhorse.

  19. As I speculated, its happening. Pro teams giving college athletes NIL deals:

“Georgia gymnast Rachel Baumann is pledging allegiance to a pro team for a different kind of name, image and likeness deal.

Baumann and Georgia Tech quarterback Jordan Yates signed contracts with the Atlanta Braves to become “Braves Athletes.”

The NL East leading Braves in a July 7 Instagram post went in search of college athletes to work with the team looking for those that are Braves fans, play at a school in “Braves Country,” and are active on social media, according to a press release at MLB.com.

There were 40,000 engagements and 500 direct messages from athletes interested.”

      • The BioNTech vaccine is fully approved by the FDA. Yes, the vaccine technology is proprietary to both Pfizer and BioNTech, but from a legal standpoint, the manufacturers are different.

This implies that, if you obtain a dose from a vial that states BioNTech as the manufacturer, you will receive compensation for damages. Pfizer is immune to this because they are still under emergency use authorization (they refuse to give any vials to countries that do not waive liability). There isn’t a single vial in the United States that came directly from BioNTech facilities in Germany.

Those lawyers for Pfizer are absolutely brilliant. They pulled a rabbit out of the hat.

          • Not at all. I think they’re safe for the vast majority of the population. But we all recognize that some aren’t meant to take these vaccines because of complications with their body. That’s true for every vaccine. The risks of taking this vaccine are myocarditis, but this is pretty rare.

I’m just pointing out that the vendor (Pfizer) providing the Pfizer/BioNTech technology to US clinics is still benefitting from the FDA’s emergency use authorization protocol, and will be for some time. BioNTech (a separate German company) is not because they are fully licensed to sell this product with no safety net of liability protection. Thus, BioNTech is not providing their manufactured vials to the US because they’re letting Pfizer take on all of the risk (which is none under the FDA UEA).

So, if you do experience damages (which I think are unlikely), you cannot claim liability right now. The alternative is not getting the vaccine, and risk contracting the disease. That’s something everyone has to assess.

          • Also, if you do get the Pfizer shot, make sure you minimize contact with others for 21 days (in between shots). The reason being is that your immune system is ramping up antibodies and, if it contracts SARS-COV2, it might not be at full capacity to fight the virus. From my understanding, this is a chief mechanism by which vaccine-resistant strains are produced.

I was disappointed when my health provider did not inform people in the room to do this.

          • Well, Pfizer may not lose its EUA status for another year. We also don’t know if BioNTech will supply US clinics in the future. So, you may be waiting for a while.

  20. More insight into why the Beaver hype train is so quiet: it’s basically been the same darn thing for the last five years. Vegas predicts 2-3 wins and sets the bar low. Optimistic fans think “maybe we can get to six!” Everyone wonders who is going to play DT. As you’ll see below, AB has been obsessively focused on our lack of DT depth for FIVE YEARS.

Some fun highlights from the ghost of Fall Camp Past threads:

    2017-
GA: predicts 6/7 wins; his goal is 10.
AB’s: Craig Evans (“the most important player on the roster”) eligibility watch, ObjCritic correctly predicting that at least the OL would be good, there were actually more predictions about MR’s Nebraska record than OSU’s…such was the level of optimism.

    2018-
Story line was basically whether there was any way the program could bounce back in only one season from the devastation GA wrought in his final year.
AB’s: just run the ball, please; “JS sounds a lot like Riley”

    2019-
More baseball talk than anything. Jordan Whitley watch (“he’s the most important player on the team.) Who else is going to play DT? Who’s going to be our kicker?

    2020-
Pessimism around most areas. Coaches focused on cleaning up mistakes in several areas.

AB’s: who are our DT transfer options? Who is going to play DT? Can we convert Sio? “We can probably win at least two games.”

    • Hey, it took the coaches a year to read it, but at least they converted Sio to DT.
Wonder if Coach Seumalo could be enticed to come back to OSU for a pay raise? He’s down at SJSU, right?

  21. Looks like OSU has it’s non-con schedule completed through 2027 now. I actually really like the games they’ve picked. No body bag games, all winnable. Mostly G5 and Big Sly teams, eith the occasional P5 matchup. And the setup has us playing 2 home/1 away every year. Put together multiple bowl seasons woth this schedule and they should consider adding 1 or 2 higher profile matchups, otherwise keep it like this.

    2021
    09/04 – at Purdue
    09/11 – Hawaii
    09/18 – Idaho
    2022
    09/03 – Boise State
    09/10 – at Fresno State
    09/17 – Montana State

    2023
09/02 – at San Jose State
    09/09 – UC Davis
    09/16 – San Diego State

    2024
    08/31 – Idaho State
    09/07 – at Boise State
    09/21 – Purdue

    2025
    08/30 – Portland State
    09/06 – Fresno State
    09/13 – at Texas Tech

    2026
    09/05 – Sacramento State
    09/12 – Texas Tech
09/19 – at San Diego State

    2027
    09/04 – Portland State
    09/11 – New Mexico
    09/18 – at Ole Miss

    2028
    09/09 – at New Mexico

    2030
    08/31 – Ole Miss

    • I’d live to have UNLV added as a road game though. I’m sure that’s a tough game to schedule though, now that their new stadium is open

    • 3
      1

2024 decision making is questionable with both Purdue and Boise State.

On the other hand, it will be a good platform to launch Vidlak’s Heisman campaign.

      • It doesnt get much more cupcakey than this, does it?
Are there any teams on this list that OSU shouldnt regularly out recruit? Boise State and Purdue are the most similar team from a talent comparison and probably the most difficult matchups, but after that we should expect to be favore in the rest until we play Ole Miss.

        • I’d like to see PSU, Idaho State, et al. I don’t know why we have to play teams from the Mountain West when we could be playing the local teams from the Big Sky. Two Big Sky teams every year, and then pay one terrible team from the Sun Belt to come up and take a beat down.

        • You’re only allowed to count 1 FCS win towards bowl eligibility per season(unless you play Hawaii on the road and schedule a 13th game to help recoup costs, then you can count 2)
So 1 big sky per year is the max you’ll be seeing, which is what we’re doing.

          • They usually play 4 non con games and have a bigger pool of lower level conferences around them to choose from. Sun Belt is actually an FBS conference, although many of their teams are former FCS teams.
We just dont have as many teams on the west coast, period, so the pool to choose from is pretty small unless you want to travel across multiple time zones.

          • 1
            3

I do wish they would work out some type of road game agreement with PSU so they can play 1 game in PDX every other year and then have 2 other home non con games.
Would be nice to not have to leave the state and the PDX game would essentially be a home game.

      • I’m guessing this whole ACC/Big10/Pac conference alignment is going to screw things up down the road once existing contracts are played out. We’ll probably be forced to schedule exclusively with ACC/Big10 teams at least once per year and maybe multiple times per year in basketball.
Almost sounds like these 3 conferences want to shun the SEC and not schedule contests with that conference going forward.

          • I think that’s pretty much exactly what this alliance is about. SEC and ESPN have too much collective power over the rest of the schools, so they’re trying to band together to make decisions that benefit teams outside the SEC. Big12 is the question mark now. Do they join the SEC, the Alliance, or split up between the 2 groups?

          • I could see them picking off the money making teams one by one. Clemson, Miami, FSU, North Carolina, Ohio State, Michigan and starting up an SEC with a North/South/East/West division super conference.
If Oregon stays in the Alliance group, they may get their shot at finally being the top team in college football*

            *junior varsity conference

        • Gotta get some kind of leverage in the next round of media deals. Offering premium matchups are one way to do it.

Some kind of partnership to combine the league networks would be great. Maybe one channel for non revenue sports while the main channel gets good football/basketball matchups and conference championships for non rev sports.

  22. 1
    5

Scott Barnes was on Canzano a few minutes ago and mentioned some new donor money coming in from “friends of the program” which will serve as a catalyst for OSU to not only meet their goal of $85m raised for Reser West side construction, but exceed it.
He called it a “Challenge Commitment” which sounds like money that will come OSU’s way if they meet some unspecified goal first.
Sounds good for Reser construction fans. But at this point, I’d almost rather see money get routed toward NIL deals and just leave Reser alone. An update to the stadium isnt going to steer recruits to OSU and is more about pleasing the fans. But wins will please the fans more than a stadium upgrade.

    • The old side is in bad shape. Mounting maintenance and repair costs make it worthwhile to replace now. It’ll cost OSU more in the long term if they don’t replace it soon. Plus it’s pretty crappy, no seat backs, etc, doesn’t hold any real nostalgic value either.

    • 4
      1

Disagree that a new west side of the stadium won’t steer new recruits. Given that OSU now appears to be going head to head with higher profile programs with better facilities for higher profile recruits, it’s a decided recruiting disadvantage with lower grade facilities. While facilities may not seem to be a huge deal for some fans, one of the first things recruits is the facilities. Plus, a very good response was made with regard to deferred maintenance costs on the west side. In the end, much of the recruiting process is about perception and image. Having a uniformed stadium appearance that is new and fresh will improve perception and image in the eyes of potential recruits IMO. Any opportunities to improve your recruiting prospects, especially at OSU, should be pursued.

      • We already have nice facilities wrt the facilities recruits actually come into contact with.
The only time recruits use the bleachers are when they’re running stairs. The locker room, Valley Center, weight room and practice facility/fields are what the athletes actually come into contact with.
I’m not saying Reser shouldnt eventually be improved, but I think the path is through winning and then raising the funds organically, and winning in the NIL era will come quickest if you have pockets deep enough to attract top players. OSU is going to start losing recruits to non scholarship spots at BYU going forward, as an example. Just crazy to think about.

  23. Daschel says Gebbia’s hamstring has kept him out of action, not only in Sats scrimmage, but also today and yesterday. He speculates that it’s down to Noyer and Nolan to start vs Purdue.

    • 2
      1

That’s unfortunate, but Noyer is a nice backup option.

Things are not trending the Beavs way for this game in terms of injuries. Injuries ruining the most promising season since ’06 before it even starts.

      Luck o’ da…………..

      • Hate to see Gebbia hurt, but I’m fine with Noyer, he checks the experience, mobile threat, and moxie boxes. A lot depends on how the rest of the team views the situation, indications have been that that isn’t a problem.
AND, I’d expect fewer batted down passes from him.

      • I wouldn’t call him the backup option considering they were neck and neck. Sound like Nolan is making a late push.

The injuries are unfortunate especially with Schad and the corners heading into Purdue and their passing attack. Gebbia is bad too but getting Noyer in the transfer portal was big time for this scenario. I think Purdue has had their fair share of injuries too its just part of football. At least this is finally a team with some depth and can hopefully compete while these guys get healthy.

        • According to Brohm, Purdue is 90-95% healthy this week. The only guy out for sure is a starting MLB and probably the return man/reserve WR who bit the paramedic.

    • Gotta think it’s Noyer, but they have to keep Nolan engaged because if he decides to transfer, you’re only 1 freak injury to Noyer away from having a zero experience true freshman as your only remaining option (or Colletto).

      • Don’t forget Jake Blair!

From practice reports and stats, it doesn’t sound like Vidlak would be a step down from Nolan, aside from the fact that Nolan has (hopefully) come out on the other side of the First Time Playing P5 Ball jitters.

  24. Men’s non conf schedule out. Not too bad. One possible marquee game vs LSU. 3 other games vs power 5 teams (though all bottom half of their conferences) Tulsa and nicholls st are good mid conf adds.

Portland st, Samford, uc Davis and sac st are quad 4 games. Can’t lose those. Esp at home.

Good slate to build a tourney resume.

  25. I like Beav in OH’s approach to identifying three tiers to the PAC 12. Anyone have a different set of them? While I agree with him that only the OL and LBs are proven, I think there’s been measurable improvements in recruiting, depth, and weight training, and OSU belongs in the middle tier this year and if things go right (injuries, which are already likely affecting the team), can work into the lower end of the top tier. I’m thinking 8 wins this year.

    • 2
      3

I want to believe. I really do. That’s why I have us as a dark horse.

But…with the recent injuries, I just don’t see major improvement anywhere on defense, and when your defense was as bad as ours has been the last three years, your offense has to be REALLY good to win 8 games. In fact, our defense could even be worse than last year’s if the injuries don’t improve soon.

2/3 starting DL are walk-ons. They’re not inspiring fear in many OL hearts.

    • I can see that but can also see 4-8. I think were mid tier too but have to prove it still and start winning those close games.

All of the injuries probably weren’t starters aside from Hodgins . Maybe Schad but I don’t think the coaches were going to put him in front of Skelton he’s supposed to be having a really good camp and put on 20lbs. Gebbia possibly too but that was also 1a 1b scenario it seemed with Noyer. As a 2nd team all pac 12 I wouldn’t call it a drop off.

Yes 2 of 3 DL are former walk ons but some of OSUs best players have been just that not to mention Grant who is one of our best defenders. Skelton and Anderson have a lot of playing time/starts under their belt and have really transformed their bodies. I think it’s more of a credit to them and hard work than it’s weakness. All reports are that they’ve been impressive. I truly doubt the D will be worse. Didn’t lose anybody but the corners but it sounds like these 2 are better than last years starters. So everyone is more experienced and bigger and stronger. Not to mention once again the reports are very good against the OSU offense that should be very good again this year.

Time will tell but I still think this team has all the pieces to be very good just depth has taken a hit.

      • One of the strength’s of the offense I think is Lindgren’s diverse play calling. It sort of reduces the dependence on any one player, and makes it challenging to defend. Sure, I’d prefer Jefferson was still playing at RB, who wouldn’t? Once in while, his play calling is a bit perplexing and disappointing for short periods, but overall a strength I think.

    • I think 6-6, but it’ll be a good 6-6. The Beavs will drop the first game to Purdue, but they will have several blowout wins against Pac-12 opponents they haven’t beaten in nearly a decade (Wazzu, Stanford). All of their conference losses will be by less than 2 possessions.

  26. Now Daschel says Jaden Robinson is injured. Looks like it’s the Alex Austin show at CB2. Secondary depth gets tested even further.

Ay if anyone is bored or anything go to pac 12 network rn. They are replaying a lot of OSU’s old upsets rn starting with 2012 Wisconsin.

    • No one that isn’t replaceable really. None were guaranteed starters except for Hodgins. Austin and Wright were the probable starters at corner and Julian expected back for the game. Those are really the only ones that should affect the game with Purdue’s passing attack.

If Noyer is a gamer, and the RB by committee approach is good (I don’t think Purdue’s run D is anything special, at least as of last season), the LBs play lights out and the OLine takes responsibility for owning the trenches, I think the Beavers can pull off a win. Baylor is good, Fenwick is likely to surprise, Lowe has speed…there’s good TE’s to work with. They could control the pace.

        • I guess Lowe has looked the best according to Smith. I think if they control the ball and stay ahead of the sticks and don’t turn it over they should win. They have 2 good receivers, Bell being really good. If Wright is the real deal hopefully he can stick with him somewhat. Definitely will need to get some pressure so they don’t have to cover too long. Julian is probably our best cover safety aside from Grant so hopefully he’ll be ready to go. If Gumbs can be that dominant pass rusher that would be a huge help. Sounds like they’ve been getting good pressure in camp against a veteran Oline so that bodes well. The only thing I’m worried about on offense is Kalafentzis or whatever his name is. Need to protect whoever the QB is and he needs to protect the ball. Tunovers could easily decide this one.

          • Impact of Kalaftis will depend on how good the rest of the OL is. You can neutralize one good rusher fairly easy with a double team as long as the rest of the OL can hold their own.

Losing starters AND depth at our two weakest positions is definitely a big deal when most of the starters at those positions were unknown commodities in the first place.

        • Exactly. By the logic above, we can lose everyone who wasn’t a guaranteed starter and be fine just because they weren’t guaranteed to start.

        • I meant that Jones, Robinson and whoever the backup QB is would probably not even see the field unless there is an injury. So in the first game it might not have an impact. Blur already said that hopefully he would only play 2 CBs and by all reports that was going to be Austin and Wright. I never said it wasn’t a big deal but as far as the CBs go it could have zero impact unless there is another injury. I don’t think it makes the Purdue game an automatic loss like angry said. They have players hurt too including their star MLB. I think one of their other defensive veterans is out for the season before camp started as well.

Damn, Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts died. Not a HUGE Stones fan, but loved his drumming; like a blues locomotive, and always cool.

    • I wonder if this replaces a conference series. I like that it’s a true round robin. Baseball tourneys are different than basketball, teams that are solidly in, tend to not take the tournament seriously. Pitching their weekday guys and give young guys more playing time. Teams are ok with being bounced in the first round to save pitching for regionals. The ones who do make it far, really stress their pitching staffs.

But other than that, should be pretty fun for fans.

        • It can be good or bad for the Beavs. If they are solidly in, it’s kind of a free week letting the end of the bench play. If they are in the bubble, they can steal a bid as only a few teams are trying. 4-5 teams should be in by then anyway.

    • Isnt the regular season format set up so we play all 10 other Pac teams in a series already?
Seems pointless to have a Pac12 tournament with the regular seaon essentially sorting all of that out already.

Man I was really hoping for more already from this alliance deal with the ACC / Big10…. like “we have made a deal that will allow you to watch for free on a channel available to all starting now.” My dreams were smashed. Oh well, back to believing the Beavs will be the Pac-12 Champs this year.

angry- per your comment about site traffic being stable, but comment counts being down…seems like losing jack was likely the culprit

  31. Have any of you guys transplanted rhubarb? The prior owner left a giant plant in the main garden, and it was taking up valuable space. I machete’d it down, took the root ball (it was chipped up, but had some secondary roots that were perfect), and planted it in a side area that’s better for a non-essential crop like rhubarb. Will this work?

    • Yes. My parents always had rhubarb growing in Alaska and would take a shovel and spilt the root base to grow another plant elsewhere or to give to friends to start their own rhubarb plants.

    • Nice. We made rhubarb crisp and jam with it. It’s great. Will try the strawberries next time.

Wish it weren’t so big! Really need onions in that space next year. The roots are like tree roots. Very hard to get out. I fear I missed some and next year it will just regrow.

      • My grandma used to make us strawberry rhubarb pie, I loved it. Haven’t had rhubarb outside of desserts though, so not sure how it is in other applications.

  32. Sounds like Fenwick may be part of a double team vs Karlaftis; Lindgren likes his pass pro.
Lindgren has good things to say about Nolan as well, has given him plenty of first unit reps and likes that he, “doesn’t default to running at the first hint of pressure.”

As far as I’ve seen, Purdue still hasn’t named a starting QB?
EDIT/ADD: They have made a decision per a Purdue writer: Jeff Brohm radio show: “We actually have decided on a starting quarterback and we’ll probably name him in the next couple of days”

    • Glad Hayes is healthy because it sounds like Sappington is currently only making about 20% of his kick attempts.
Kickoffs have been decent though, usually landing around the 5 yard line

    • According to the big O, Nolan’s prospects for starting have improved. I posted a week ago or so that I thought Nolan had a better arm than Gebbis so we will soon find out……

      • I’m not opposed to Nolan starting. He was rough last year, but it was a really tough offseason for a program transfer. No spring ball, little to no informal summer work allowed, normal fall camp cancelled, restrictive COVID protocols…would have been a really tough time to learn the playbook and adjust to D1 college ball. Lot of potential there, and I think the offseason should have really helped him. Though OTOH he did not look good at all in the spring game.

Also I hope he got contacts?? I remember play after play watching him squint furiously at the sidelines looking confused.

        • There could also be some gamesmanship here- if Vidlak and Noyer both jump Nolan on the depth chart (and presumably a healthy Gebbia would too) – I’d imagine he’d be hitting the transfer portal. But we need him this year and probably really don’t want that to happen. It’d be easy enough to talk him up and delay a final depth chart.

  33. Thoughts on the “Alliance”:

It’s definitely an attempt to curb the ESPNSEC takeover and is about 5 years overdue. SEC commish Sankey overstepped by working the Big12 to agree to the playoff changes while planning to destroy the Big12 by luring Texas and OU. This is the rest of college conferences not simply scrambling to keep up with SEC aggressiveness, but joining forces to stop SEC aggressiveness. I like it as a creative way to diminish ESPN and SEC through future isolation of them both through such an alliance of the remaining healthy conferences. SEC will be left with the leftovers of the BIG12 or just touting themselves without any out of conference games to show a barometer of their standing. It can be successful only if the following begin to happen:

-Each team plays 8 game conference and 1 per conference ooc from the other 2 conferences, + 2 ooc lower division regional teams
-Football scheduling may become a gentlemen’s agreement for all 41 teams involved to drop any future games scheduled with SEC and fill out within the Alliance
-SEC will be relegated to lower division games and games against only themselves until there is a shift towards reasonableness from SEC towards other conferences
-ESPN should be aced out of all future game contracts until they back off of the SEC honk approach to every sport
-New Pac12 commish has already out-done Larry Scott and may have saved college sports by such a move.
-Leverage scheduling consistency throughout the 3 conferences to be more of an appeal for new TV contracts for all 3 conferences
-Partner with Streaming services, NBC, CBS, FOX, Big10 Network, PAC12 network to showcase all teams and cut ESPN out of the opportunity to influence so much within gametimes etc
-Football, Men’s BBall, Women’s BBall should all benefit from this from cross-sectional schedule and exposure. No longer ESPN driven or hindered
-Benefits OSU with future scheduling, security from PAC12 future, possible financial windfall from new tv contracts, nationwide exposure from additional tv
-Possibly add remaining BIG12 teams into the 3 conferences in some way which makes sense for each conference.

  34. Interesting that Lindgren mentions 6 other receivers instead of any of the 4 star transfers when he talks about guys who have stood out. Sounds like Bradford, Lindsay(I guess he’s a transfer but has been here 2 years, and Beason will start. Then mentions champ, Gould, and Bolden.

    • No Harrison? Looked good in limited time last year. But Lindsey is a breakout candidate so I get it. But I’d have Harrison above Champ, Gould, and Bolden.

      • Social media stories showed Harrison catching a nice TD today on a fade route. So Lindgren not mentioning him could be strategic to keep early opponents off the scent. Harrison looked like a complete game changing player in limited action last year.

      • I agree with all of that. I thought Harrison was very good in the games he played leading in receptions in both. Lindsay came along down the stretch last year. I’m just surprised not to hear much about Harrison I can see Dunmore and Tongue because of the amount of time but Harrison is a head scratcher. Beason, Bradford and Lindsay is a pretty good starting 3 tho. Bradford has been pretty reliable when healthy and very experienced. He was pretty clutch against Oregon last year.

        • I like the idea of starting those 3, and then like CaliBeav said bring in Harrison to stretch the field and surprise Purdue. Maybe give one of those starting 3 a breathers. Purdue might let up a bit…run Harrison deep. I like that idea.

  35. Lindsey might be a breakout player. Mentions he finally understands the play book. This was my concern with Tongue and Dunmore, and why I had them lower on my pre-camp depth chart. They’ll be good, but might not reach potential until next year.

  36. Schafer moving around in pads at least: “ Defensive tackle Keonte Schad wore full pads again and did some good work on the sideline Wednesday. The Minnesota transfer hasn’t participated in practice since the early days of camp due to a troublesome knee.”

Ever wonder if transfers use the portal to extend their “careers” when injured?

Dunmore broke some ankles: “During receiver vs. defensive back drills, the quarterbacks completed 11 of 19 passes. The completions included two long touchdown receptions by John Dunmore and Silas Bolden. Dunmore had the nicest cut of the drill, a move that caused the defensive back to completely lose his footing and fall.”

  37. Lingren mentions Noyer making mistakes that need cleaning up…”mental stuff”…attributes it to not having enough time in the system. Nolan in the mix to start.

Sounds like Gebbia is out of the mix due to injury, reading between the lines. Really unfortunate because he knows the offense best.

    • Ya I think Gebbia knowing the offense inside and out and being able to audible to a better play allowed Jefferson to get some of his bigger runs. A very overlooked attribute. If he can be ready for game prep week he might still have a shot. Sounds like Chance is really pushing which is good but might prevent a single guy from getting the reps needed. Noyer really does have the tools if he can put it together. Interceptions are my biggest concern. I would rather have a game manager that takes care of the ball than someone thats going to turn it over and take sacks.

        • Chances both qbs play not due to an in game injury? They bring different elements to the position so could be a way to catch the defense off guard. Not usually a fan of this but first game might be worth a try. I’ll reach out to coach.

  38. Looks like Jacob Newell, the local TE from Thurston HS, has committed to Nevada.
Just mentioning because at one point he was considering an official visit to OSU in the fall.
    Also had an Arizona offer.

I’m not a big soccer guy, but will occasionally watch the WMLS Portland Thorns team with my wife. Found out tonight they have a rookie on their team who is only 15 years old!
I’m kindof shocked that nobody seems to have a problem with that, yet any men’s pro player needs to be at least out of highschool(MLB) or have additional years beyond highschool(NBA/NFL).
    Talk about inequality

    • For football, kids generally just aren’t ready physically. I read an article about that a few years back, where they talked to NFL people and asked who might have gone straight from high school to NFL, they mentioned MAYBE Adrian Peterson, and Herschel Walker before him. I can’t remember the other exampels they gave, but it was damn few. Plus, the NFL likes its free, college farm system…

NBA drafts players out of high school, and as a non-contact sport, I wouldn’t be surprised if someday teenagers can play for the league. Another difference is these days kids specialize so much sooner (which I don’t think is good) and have so much training.

  40. “ Oregon State’s season opening opponent Purdue will turn to junior Jack Plummer as its starting QB” according to Nick. Anyone got a good scouting report on him?
