I posted this in the prior thread, but might as well make it it’s own thread:
I remember years ago writing that it made no sense (from the rest of the conferences standpoint) to have OSU in conference sharing revenue when they don’t really contribute any. Said they should ditch OSU. I was told that would never happen because (a) they were an original team and (b) these teams had academic and cultural similarities that trumped money.
Need to find the post and comments. You guys remember this talk? Must have been 10 years ago during the expansion.
Here we are…the other teams finally realized it. People can blame Larry Scott all they want, and he was bad, but you know what’s worse? Years of losing, having your media support that because they want access to coaches over excellence, and not to rock the small town vibe. OSU is getting the results of everything the fans demanded and asked for. Not everyone here, but the fanbase at large wanted and rigidly supported things that lead to this. OSU has OSU to blame. Now it’s see if the BIG12 lets us teet suck for a while, but my guess is they’ll see the same problem with us. My prediction is everyone but Washington state and OSU join the Big-12. Only hope is Oregon demands we come along…
Game. Blouses.
My prediction? OSU and WSU wind up in the Mountain West.
Same. Mountain West. Let’s see if big brother can pull some strings. I know Oregon would not want to lose the rivalry game. Short of that we’re in the mountain west.
It just doesn’t make any sense for the larger schools, from their perspective, to keep sharing revenue with small schools that never contribute that revenue back, and whose fanbases don’t demand excellence. I’d leave, too, if I were USC or UCLA. I know many people here do demand excellence. I’m not saying everyone. I’m speaking about the fanbase at large. OSU has an insular fanbase who doesn’t want change, thinks the journey is neater than the destination, and just wants to protect the status quo. It leads to this scenario. Surprised it took this long TBH.
“I know Oregon would not want to lose the rivalry game”
When it comes to playing in high profile games against better competition, Oregon could not care less about the civil war. PK isn’t getting any younger and you can bet they’ll chase the $$$ and make ANY attempt to get better and win a “natty”.
In the grand scheme of things, OSU, WSU and to a similar extent Cal and Arizona really don’t matter. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Cal drop athletics rather than step down to the Mountain West. Stanford and Cal may be the bay area market but in reality not many people in that geographic area give two squirts of piss about college athletics.
Look, IDK what is going to happen. I’m just looking at this realistically. Oregon State football is small potatoes. It could go away completely and not many folks outside of our small fan base would notice.
This is the reason I don’t see OSU going to any other conference except the Mountain West.
Big 12 isn’t going to take the remaining teams of the Pac and have a 24 team conference. It doesn’t make any financial sense for them to do that. In no scenario do I see OSU moving to the Big 12 for that reason.
Pac could add a few teams but whoever they could add isn’t going to make up for the loss of USC and UCLA. No matter what happens OSU is going to be getting less $ from whatever media rights contract they’ll be under. Facts is facts man.
“When it comes to playing in high profile games against better competition, Oregon could not care less about the civil war. PK isn’t getting any younger and you can bet they’ll chase the $$$ and make ANY attempt to get better and win a “natty”.”
I remember that when McMaryon led the Beavers to a CW victory over the Ducks in Reser, Canzano wrote about how Knight was instead at an Ohio State game and in the locker room telling them how proud he was they were a Nike school. I’m sure he knew the Ducks weren’t bound for a meaningful bowl game that year, so he didn’t care about the CW.
MWC=$30 million in lost revenue for the athletic dept and some spirts will be cut unless they decide to begin using the $1billion of general funding
No one wanted to believe crazy Gary sucked, and was going with luton and not mcm, it’s easier to be dismissive. My hope is that pac stays alive, and adds a couple teams.
That would be best case, but I think the lure of $ will get the 10 teams to merge with the Big12. Then it’s just whether they bring OSU and WSU along for the ride, which they’d have to do out of charity. They have zero reason for these teams.
Maybe OSU’s best argument would be to win the conference this year and be somewhat relevant as the decisions are being made. It would be a pretty bad look to dump the conference champ in football the year they make the Rose Bowl.
Angry is correct regarding the charity scenario and OSU has no real value beyond sentimental.
Won’t the decisions be made by then? Seems to be moving fast. Is there a set date for all of this?
Can we convince the Big12 that we are Oklahoma State – West? The initials and color scheme are pretty convincing.
Your argument lost it’s steam with the Luton take. Last I checked he’s still in the NFL. Where’s mcm at?
Oh god. For the millionth time, making it to the NFL doesn’t mean you’re the better NCAA QB. Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez. I guess Luton is better than Tebow. Jeez, man, think before you type.
You are definitely one of the old-guard-fans who does not want to rock the boat.
Funny that you are still trying to defend your terrible take on Luton vs mcm. I think F nemec could have made a better point by complaining about GA benching Nall a game after he rushed for 220 yards vs Cal instead of taking an old and tired shot at Luton. Dude almost ended his career playing for us and came back to have a helluva last year.
Think before typing.
The CW hasn’t been much of a rivalry game in some time and it doesn’t attract big ratings. I’m not sure why UO would care about the game. But if OSU went to MWC, couldn’t UO just schedule it as a pre-season game every other year or something like that? It would become a money game for the Beavers and incentivize them to play it. It’d be like OSU playing PSU – the team up the road from a lower division.
These moves are all about viewers and money, and I agree that the new “super conferences” are unlikely to bring along teams like OSU that don’t really contribute money.
I actually think USC, UO, and UW will all have a greater challenge getting to the NC than in the past. In the past, they could look to win the PAC and at least hope to have a shot at the playoffs.
Depending on when the other PAC teams get gobbled up, the 2022 CW could be the last “PAC” civil war game at Reser. Capacity will be about 25K.
2023 features as home games: UC Davis, SDSU, Stanford, UCLA, Utah, and UW.
Stanford and Cal have no local following and ASU/UA have a very transplanted population base in the Phoenix metro. None of them would be any better for Big12 bottom line than OSU or WSU in reality.
Just because the schools are in big markets (Rutgers) doesn’t mean somehow the tv market will automatically go that way. It isn’t feasible for any of the PAC schools to depart beyond USC, Oregon and maybe UW. UCLA has a limited appeal beyond NCAA tourney and none for football. Colorado doesn’t “command the Denver market either. Utah/BYU share the Salt Lake market and it is valid but beyond USC/Oregon and maybe Utah, any tv rights $$ is kind of far fetched.
The challenge with the west coast markets is they have all become pro sports oriented, and the populace tends that way. College sports are great in pockets but not a given in any city besides Salt Lake City.
USC is basically killing the PAC12 by leaving and it isn’t likely to recover without dramatic looses to secondary sports or all sports at some schools.
I read a Jon Wilber piece and he said “it is still hard to believe it is actually happening that LA schools are leaving” and the aftermath will not be pretty for those left behind.
The TV market grab thing made sense when it was about getting your cable channel in more regions. PAC-10 botched that with their horrible cable channel fiasco. Now that model is obsolete.
In most things, including football, I think geography matters. Jetting teams across the country throughout the season is a great way to tell everyone it’s all about money–and in that way kill a lot of fan interest in college football.
So I see a scenario where the Mountain West could be a gem for fans, with regional rivalries and just plain more fan fun. It’ll take a few years for this to play out, but I can imagine the Mountain West growing in importance for this reason.
Wouldn’t it be cool to have Oregon knocking on the MWC door (or the PAC’s if it survives) seven years down the road, once their sugar daddy’s gone and they’re only mid-tier in their superconference, if that, their former national relevance only a memory?
And meanwhile, OSU, especially if Smith sticks around, continuing to be a great place for guys to learn their craft and have a shot at the NFL.
I’m thinking the same thing.
Returning college football back to what it was in the late 90’s and early 2000’s is what will keep the sport alive at schools like OSU.
I like those scenarios. But will the dollars be there to sustain any of it?
Smith’s contract alone is about what the MWC tv payout is for any tv deal…
Hard to believe the Mountain West had its own network at one point and it was on DirecTV. I guess it didn’t turn out so well for them, but the upper-tier football being played in the league was good and rivalries were strong. Of course, Utah screwed that up by going to the P-12, it’s a little bit of reap what you sow. It’s an ESPN/Big 10 world now, I sort of hope it fails on some level. Those leagues are my least favorite to watch on Saturdays unless I’m rooting against one of their schools.
I’m betting on ESPN failing spectacularly when hard financial times hit
Really? Live sports are getting more valuable as cable dies. My guess is it will be easier for people to cut their 4th and 5th streaming services when times get tight than to give up something more unique like sports.
ESPN’s business model just doesn’t resonate success, and it’s reflecting in their ability to grow subscribers (down 13 million over the past five years).
Many of their subscriptions go to restaurants and bars, but the service sector could be the most affected in hard times because people don’t want to go out. They’ve managed to keep subs at $8/month but I’d expect that to sharply rise.
I really hope ESPN fails. They’ve ruined every sport.
Not likely. Across the board Disney’s quality generally poor, but they’re really good at monetizing their products. Mediocre but lucrative entertainment is their MO.
If you look back at the history of corporate American, many companies have an arc of rising to the top, then failing. There’s a good YouTube channel called “Company Man” that does deep dives into these stories. I can easily see ESPN make the list one day. They are literally doing everything that leads to failure. I left for good 13 years ago, in 2009, and I will never go back. I’m always early on things…
No offense, but this seems optimistic bordering on naïve.
I could see being in a lower conference being more fun (either U Montana or Montana State for example have great home atmosphere/fun for example, let’s see how they show in Portland this fall), but thinking its going to be financially attractive in the future to rich programs seems unrealistic.
The financial disparity between OSU and PAC schools who join the super conference will increase significantly. Rich schools don’t usually come back, and their universities and ADs become too dependent on the revenue.
Also, i’m not sure who the college fotball audience is going to be in a few decades. Its not going to be today’s young people and many “traditionalists” will be dead. There likely won’t be the audience to sustain the current financial model.
I will likely kind of enjoy watching it fall apart due to short sightedness and greed.
Not to mention the financial value of programs is entirely dependent on fan interest. Do you think fan interest in OSU football will increase in the MWC where the stakes are lower?
My comment about the Ducks knocking on the MWC’s door in seven years was a little fanciful, of the wouldn’t-it-be-cool variety, but still, I wouldn’t be surprised. Teams can take a swan (or duck) dive, it’s been done before.
But at the same time, with the addition of OSU and WSU (and whoever else), the Mountain West would be a different animal than it is now. Definitely the conference stakes would be raised. And yes, I would expect the fans to enjoy the ride.
It would be one of the few conferences remaining that have some actual history. A story line that doesn’t start with dollars.
Don’t underestimate the power (and value) of a story.

Sorry about the repeated message. The system told me the first try didn’t work . . . and then it did.
When does B10 kick out Iowa State and Indiana to so the rest get a larger piece of the pie?
This money grab thing sucks.
Iowa State isn’t in the Big 10
Phil Steele’s pre season top 40 out, Beavers not included. Preseason foe BSU comes in at #31, and PAC inclusions are Utah (6), Oregon (10) USC (16), and UCLA (28).

Regarding McMaryion vs Luton…I can’t believe Rev is still making that ridiculous argument, but let’s end it here:
Career stats (in college, because, these are college QBs, right?…It’s not like Luton’s NFL stats help defend him as the better QB in any way). He is one of the worst NFL QBs in the league right now. Anyway, here’s the comparison.
McMaryion:
8044 career passing yards
50 career passing TDs to 18 INTs
14 career rushing TDs
689 career rushing yards
22-6 career record at Fresno (24-12 if you want his OSU starts).
1-1 in Civil Wars
129.5 career QBR
Luton:
5610 career passing yards
43 career passing TDs to 15 INTs
6 career rushing TDs
-137 career rushing yards (yes, negative)
10-19 career record
0-1 in Civil Wars
125.5 career QBR
RevBeav says my argument that McM was the better COLLEGE QB is completely wrong. Okay…it’s not even close or debatable. Just because a guy was QB for your school and you have some emotion invested in that doesn’t mean he’s better. Just because a guy is currently in the NFL, doesn’t mean he was a better college QB. That is bonehead logic. Think before typing.
There’s a list a mile long of great college QBs that anyone with a brain would take over Luton or most of the Riley “NFL body type” QBs.
Tebow, Manziel, Zabransky, Moore… The list is long
Right. Luton was literally better at nothing other than being born with a body type that scouts still (incorrectly) favor. That will change. NFL hasn’t had their “money ball” moment yet…somehow.
This is the best example I’ve ever seen of “beating a dead horse.” Move on!
Rev can’t let it die, he loves the body type, similar to our boy GA. McM won games who gives a fuck about stats if you can’t win?
That, but as shown, Luton didn’t even have better stats…
I’ve said it all along, but Rev’s emotional attachment to this losing argument can only mean he’s Luton’s dad. Anyone know if Luton’s dad is a reverend???
Well, comparing careers is missing the point. The Civil War was a clear indicator that McMaryion was ready to take over the helm. Luton was good, but he was new in the system which is bound to create some growing pains. Sometimes you have to look beyond stats and look at how comfortable QBs are in the scheme and how well QBs are at guiding their teams to wins. I think McMaryion was clearly the better choice at the time. It was puzzling when they announced Luton. No shade on him. He had a pretty good career for us. Also, they system was built for a dual threat QB. It just didn’t make any sense at all, but nothing Andersen did made much sense I suppose.
Check out this quality content from ESPN.
A site called “ballsack sports” put out a fake quote attributed to NBA PG Ja Morant where he basically says Michael Jordan would just be an average star in today’s game. All fake, just to get a reaction out of people
The next day, ESPN has an entire segment of First Take devoted to the quote, and then in this clip, they ran the same quote but this time they also said it came from Bleacher Report(it did not)
https://mobile.twitter.com/BallsackSports/status/1546579050944143361
Lol. And people say I should fact check things…I mean, I do, but ESPN doesn’t.
Once the SuperLeagues are finalized, we’ll see the haves start to demand (and get) a bigger slice of the conference media pie than the havenots – and the havenots will go along with it, because it will still be more than they’d get elsewhere. Similar to the way Henley and Frey took a bigger cut from the Eagles reunion tour(s) than Walsh and Schmidt.
Beavs should just go independent. It’s risky for a nobody program, but it would light a fire under their ass, too.
Agreed!
It could make scheduling creative and compelling, which could aide recruiting.
And it’s certainly a more interesting way to go out if you’re going to go out.
Going independent would be disastrous without a built-in following like Notre Dame or BYU.
I’d like to blame Riley and his supporters for the loss of a decade of OSU rising to the top of the PAC12, but WSU was able to do what OSU aspired to and they are going to be cast aside as well when it is all done.
It’s a sinking ship and only the wealthy alums can salvage it with big time interest/donations/vocal support because the 50 years of athletic apathy has finally caught up with OSU. The various departments have wanted to downplay the role of winning football and its importance and insisted for too long to reduce football success/impact at OSU. Well the bell tolls for OSU and I think it won’t be long until the athletic department will need to make some difficult decisions about which sports will stay and which become on campus clubs without university funding.
Any move to the MWC will need to be dramatically better than standard MWC has been or it will be a disaster that direction as well.
WSU is pretty much on par with OSU in everything except they bring in slightly more ticket revenue.
Joking right?
Dukart finishing his baseball career at Texas tech. Wish him luck and hopefully he’s getting that grad degree paid for.
Is Myro a big loss for baseball?
Never really got to see him in action so hard to say. Not sure he would’ve cracked the starting rotation for the infield. I’ve heard people surmise that Bazanna may be going to the outfield with Trosky at 2nd and Dernedde keeping short. Not sure he’s the answer at SS with his bat and his defense definitely took a dive in the last 2 months.
Fuchs has also entered the portal. Wish him the best of luck. Had his chances this year for sure, unfortunate he wasn’t able to capitalize. Not sure any if the xfer portal guys have been a big surprise this year so far.
Definitely going to miss that otherworldly BA.
Anyone know if/where Dernedde is playing this summer?
He is likely to be “the canary in the coal mine” for Mitch. A closely watched and controversial decision.
Early on his defense, particularly his strong arm, were accepted as reason enough to keep him in the lineup but continued weakness at the plate and a drop off in his defensive numbers made it hard to think he was the best option.
Question…….for grins…………How much of an improvement with the bat is likely between now and next season? 20%? 60%?
What’s your guess??
What’s the name of the outfit that helps players improve their hitting? Don’t think it is Driveline or Armored Heat. Anyway, it is possible IMHO for Dernedde to make a big step before next spring. Not putting $ on it, but I’d like to see him “turn the corner”, pretty likely Mitch would too.

UCLA leaving Cal might not be a done deal. I don’t see Oregon leaving OSU for the same reason. Not because they don’t want to, but because Politicians won’t let them
https://www.ksl.com/article/50438618/here-come-the-uc-regents-governing-board-to-discuss-uclas-move-to-the-big-ten-litigation-cited
USC is a private university, so not touchable? USC/Notre Dame to the Big 10? UCLA has to stay put.
Utah writer cites “numerous sources” saying PAC12 remaining schools will announce they are staying together.
“However, the reality is that it’s likely a short-lived solution as the Big 10, SEC, and ACC look to add to their conference firepower out west. “
https://utah.rivals.com/news/sources-remaining-pac-12-schools-expected-to-announce-sticking-together
OSU ranked 33 in defense according to https://twitter.com/BigGameBoomer/status/1546892895461990402?s=20&t=x7h-KzOBVn5YenQsv05MJA .
I’ll believe it when I see it… OSU fan for to long.
I think this defense is good enough to keep all of its opponents under 30 points.
Also that means they are the 4th best in conference by his guess. Let’s hope so, and maybe better than that makes for a big opportunity and should be much better than a .500 team. If they are 4th best defense in the conference, they need to be winning at least 8 games this year and that means Nolan can’t be squinting and overthrowing wide open receivers. I expect the offense will be better this year as well, so the 6-6 projections should be the under and not the expectation.
Bet MGM still sets the season line at 6.5, pretty much in line with your thinking.
And not give up sack fumbles! I think we have 3 QBs that can win us games. It will be up to the receiver group taking. It up a step.
It is kind of funny that the 2 teams leaving the Pac aren’t listed in the top 50. But a number of their future foes are… have fun with that!
Lol ok. I’ll believe it when I see it. Where will the improvements come from?
D’s been improving I think? Maybe? Ha ha
Big Game Boomer rankings are purely clickbait.
He’s a nice dude, but his site is more comedy than analysis.
OT: Didn’t realize Hekker left the Rams for the Panthers. Got his ring, then must have gotten paid:
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ftw/2022/07/12/baker-mayfield-johnny-hekker-carolina-panthers-uniform-number/50482161/
Not exactly, he already got paid once. Rams waived him to save money and he signed for less with the Panthers. Still making pretty good moola and has already made $23mm in his career.
How about these names:
Derek Anderson- $6 mil for career backup
Steven Jackson- $52 mil for near hall of fame career
Mike Remmets- $22 mil so far as a starting(?) OL
Go Beavs!
Here’s a couple more names to add to that list:
Jake Luton – $1.2 mil for 2 seasons in the NFL
Angry – $12/hr plus tips for an on time pizza delivery
Rev – $2 pick pocket after he molests a kid.
Brutal.
Ya’ll gonna “whip out your dongs” to settle this?
Rev would probably like that.
Nah… I don’t think Angry can withstand the public humiliation of that.
I have St. Peter. He stands no chance.
DA definitely made more than $6M in his career
Career earnings is just shy of $30mill from what I’m seeing. Not counting any endorsements or things like that as I think those are just contract figures. Not too shabby for a primarily a back-up qb.
Spotrac is the best source for stuff like this IMO. $33.3M for DA. Where did $6M come from haha- he made more than that in one single year.
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/derek-anderson-1422/cash-earnings/
To compare players from different times you’d at least have to adjust for inflation. But in reality the impact is much greater than that as NFL salaries have far outpaced inflation. Probably the fairest way is to adjust for the salary cap and how it’s changed over time.
That is Pro-Bowler DA
Steven Jackson deserves to be in the HOF.
I hope he gets in but the lack of winning makes him borderline. NFL HOF is no joke.
Hopefully the team at least recognizes him in a unique way reserved for their better players.
Brandon Cooks will make near 40 mil this year, and made near 50 with Rams, not sure what he made before with the Patriots, but he has made a ton more than this list.
Good updates, my numbers were just a quick search not and glad to be corrected for DA, I thought it seemed a bit low but saw nothing else. Forgot about Cooks, but SJ surprised me…I haven’t checked any of the other OL guys, or Hughes, TJ, 85, or some of the other dbs that played but it is a growing list of successful NFL guys for a soon to be independent baseball school ;)
I think former players probably think they played too soon. Lol. SJ would be looking at much higher contracts now for sure.
Idk about that, not a great time to be a RB in the NFL these days. They are undervalued these days (rightfully so, IMO).
Top 8 rb salaries for 2022 are between $12-$16 mill each. Even a 4 year contract with those #’s and he’s nearly matched his entire career. Those top 8 include Chubb, Aaron Jones and Mixon which SJ is definitely a better rb than those 3 so it’s safe to say he’d be making double digits annually. I get what you’re saying though. The rb by committee is much more popular now and shelf-life is less, but the every down backs are the ones getting paid and he was that.
Not sure where you’re seeing that, but it’s definitely not right – he’s slated for $18.5M this year.
His career earnings to date are $72M and, assuming he plays out his whole current contract, he’ll get up to $125M.
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/houston-texans/brandin-cooks-14429/cash-earnings/
Matt Moore and Jordan Poyer are both in the $30M range as well.
Andy Levitre @ 42M
Hekker @23M
Steven Nelson @ 24M
Chad Johnson might be the highest earnings after adjusting for salary cap inflation – 48.8M
247 has a breakdown of top 25 school career earnings and Georgia is at $750mil top of the list, Cal is #2 at $630 mil followed by the usual suspects. Rodgers definitely boosts Cal but they do have a large group of NFL guys that have been around for a while.
It seems unlikely that Cal could get left behind along with OSU/WSU based on the amount of NFL guys produced from all 3 institutions.
That’s a meaningless stat from the perspective of the conferences…and even from the perspective of a college football fan honestly.
The conferences and networks care about money and money only. Cal has potential in the form of a lot of people in the Bay Area, but not a lot of actual current revenue. The potential viewership does give them a leg up over OSU and WSU, but the actual viewership probably makes that advantage small.
And as for successful NFL alums, as Angry says, who cares? It’s just trivia. All that matters is if the team wins and is successful. Players that underachieve in college and go on to have great pro careers do exactly zero for the program. Teams that underachieve despite great players are just as bad. I don’t think this has any bearing whatsoever on Cal’s fate.
Also – Cal would have extremely strong cultural and political resistance to joining the BIG10 or BIG12. Additional fossil fuel usage, CA laws restricting state employee travel to states with incompatible LGBTQ laws, political differences between the institutions in general, etc. It’s unclear whether even UCLA will be able to fight through all that, but Berkeley would have much more difficulty and controversy.
CA laws restricting state employee travel to states with incompatible LGBTQ laws, political differences between the institutions in general, etc.
The law doesn’t restrict this. It only restricts taxpayer funds from being used for it.
UCLA has already addressed this stating no taxpayer funds will be used.
They’re gone. Not coming back.
As pointed out in the previous thread, Wilner addressed this in a recent mail bag piece.
“One question regarding a California law which forbids state funds being used to fund travel to, among others, Iowa,Indiana, and Ohio. Of course UCLA has a way around this, plenty of money available from other sources.
Their athletes and staff will, however, “…receive education about the relevant California law, the law at issue in the destination state and given the choice to opt out of the travel with no risk of consequence.”
I agree, UCLA is gone, but if any staff or athlete wants to punish a state that believes women’s bathrooms are for women and men’s are for men, they can stay home in la la land with “no risk of consequence”.
Hard to say whether Cal or UCLA would have the most SJW’s who would take this route. Alex says, “Berkeley would have much more difficulty and controversy.” and he’s probably right. Sports with little/no professional future stand a good chance of seeing “opt outs”, FB and BB probably have fewer athletes willing to restrict their exposure.
https://www.ksl.com/article/50436790/hotline-mailbag-wsu-and-osu-on-the-brink-why-oregon-got-left-behind-and-loads-more
You cherry picked there. Post the entire quote…………..
Here’s the response (via email) from Scott Markley, the Bruins’ senior associate athletic director for communications:
“We have not scheduled a new competition in a banned state since the law was enacted in January 2017. Should UCLA compete or recruit in a banned state, in compliance with the law, none of the costs for travel to that state will come from state funds. In addition, if a team competes in a banned state, student-athletes and staff will receive education about the relevant California law, the law at issue in the destination state and given the choice to opt out of the travel with no risk of consequence.”
In other words, the funds supporting Big Ten travel will be organically generated by the athletic department, not funneled from central campus.
As stated in my original post, UCLA won’t be using taxpayer $ to travel to any states on the so called “banned list”. So it’s a moot point and they’ll be able to skirt around the law just fine.
And you think a football player would forego playing in a game at the horseshoe? Or a hoops player doing the same for a game at Assembly hall? Get real.
As for Cal? Who gives a shit. They aren’t going to be invited to the Big 10 or Big 12 anyway so I’m not sure why it’s even a topic of debate.
But I think we’re both saying the same thing. No vitriol pointed at you oob. I think it’s just a dumb topic considering it’s already been addressed by UCLA. Yet some still seem hung up on it.
Tilting at windmills we are
OT: Thinking of the posts above about WR Cooks earnings, I just saw NE traded former first round pick WR N’Keal Harry to Chicago for a 7th round selection:
“In three seasons with New England, Harry has totaled 57 receptions for 598 yards and four touchdowns.”
I think Harry was a WR with ASU(?), but always thought he was overrated. Maybe the next stage of his career will prove me wrong.
Maybe but doubt it. My FIL is a bears fan so I get to watch a lot of their games during the season. Fields is talented but unproven in the NFL stage but, more importantly, they have an atrocious offensive line. Hell, vs Cleveland last year miles garret had like 6 sacks by himself. Lol. I think he was a great college receiver but it might not translate to a good NFL career and I don’t know if a young qb, bad o-line and new coaching staff is a good recipe to jump start a career.
Saw a duck player has passed away tonight.
Spencer Webb. He was a former TMP guy who the GA era Beavs also recruited, around the time of Isaiah Crocker and Isaiah Hodgins. No idea what cause of death was.
RIP Spencer
Fell and hit his head in an accident near Triangle Lake according to LCSO………
The Lane County Sheriff’s Office responded to the rock slides just a short distance west of Triangle Lake at approximately 2:30pm after receiving the report of an injured person. Upon arrival, deputies learned that a 22 year old male recreating in the area fell and struck his head. Bystanders and responding paramedics were unable to revive him. Lane County Sheriff Search and Rescue personnel responded to assist with bringing him back to the roadway as he was approximately 100 yards down a steep trail.
There is no evidence of foul play and his death appears to be accidental. The victim’s name is being withheld at this time pending next of kin notification.

I know exactly where that is. It’s a shallow creek that has natural slippery slide created by the algae in the shade. Lot’s of fun. There are always kids there on hot summer days.
In the spring of 69′ as a college freshman I slipped there, attempting to walk upstream. My buddies took me to Junction City for stitches on my forehead.
I can still remember sliding down the creek, feet first, in a trail of blood. My friends thought it was hilarious until we saw the wound. Needless to say it happened after a fair number of beers.
That spot and Wildwood Falls by CG are both lots of fun but dangerous.

Ugh…that’s terrible.
It was about a decade ago when a former duck tennis player and friend of the family, Alex Rovello, died in a similar cliff diving accident. I know it was just devastating for that family. Feel terrible for the Webbs
Alex Rovello’s parents have adopted a tennis court in Portland, renovated and maintained it through the charity named for Alex, keeping his memory alive. https://www.portland.gov/parks/alex-rovello-memorial-courts.
I live pretty close to there. I see his dad keeping the grounds up pretty regularly. Really nice people
Tragic. Lesson and reminder to all of us who recreate, though. I bike a ton on roads and always worry about this kind of thing…
I had an accident 2 years ago near Wollowa Lake similar to this. Was hiking along a remote mountain stream and rocks weren’t even that slippery, but one wrong step and the rock moved causing me to fall backwards and smack the back of my head on a rock. Happened so instantly and my head took the brunt of the fall. I was fortunate that the small amount of padding from my baseball cap gave the slightest amount of cushion from being a direct hit, and I was lucky to walk away. Was dizzy the rest of the day and wouldnt have been able to get medical help if I needed it. Very fortunate it wasnt a worse outcome.
I put my face through the TV screen simulating a jump dive into the end zone — thank you Ryan Nall.
Didn’t he actually flip from us?
He wasn’t every committed to OSU, but he did visit campus
Best regards to the family.
Always a sad time. ex-BIL funeral on Sat. in Vale.
For those who wnjoy the irony of @finushing Reser” as the PAC likely ends:
https://webcam.oregonstate.edu/reser
Quite a bit of demonstrable progress will be evident this coming season.
when you think about how few days that place actually gets filled to the point of needing 90% of the seats, it’s crazy to me how much effort and money goes into making stadiums.
Maybe 6 or 7 times per year at best? I can’t remember the last time i attended a true “sell out” at that place. and with non-con games like Portland State or Hawaii, those are never going to sell out.
OSU needs to look into more options to utilize this facility during the rest of the year, like concerts or Cirque De Soliel.
Don’t forget graduation.
and The occasional OSAA football championship….and The Big Smash (Pop Warner football event).
Graduation only fills seats on one side, plus on the field seating. I cant imagine HS football attendance is any better than an OSU/PSU type non-con game.
Problem is that any act that can move 40,000 tickets can probably move 55,000 tickets, and will go with the option in Eugene. Maybe a music festival could be an option.
The amount of money dumped into sports venues, particularly football stadiums is astounding. The fact that football stadiums are usually only used for revenue 6 to 10 times a year is dumbfounding. But, that is the general difference between private ownership and public ownership. The Rose Garden (or whatever corporate name is currently on it) is privately owned and is hustling to get the venue in use as much as possible. Reser and Autzen are taxpayer owned, there are no incentives to seek out additional revenue… so they don’t.
Isn’t that part of the reasoning of how they’re building it? I thought Barnes said it would be used 365 days a year.
I guess technically it will be used 365 days a year, but that could be achived by installing a DutchBros kiosk in a small corner of the property. Technically it would get used every day, but only that small corner os needed.
Worst part is no one really wanted the stadium expansion. Sure the old side was never that nice but it functioned ok. Season ticket holders I know don’t necessarily hate the idea of an upgrade but aren’t exactly eager to pay whatever the new ticket prices are going to be.
I think a lot of people, here on this site and elsewhere, have long been advocates of, if not exactly “stadium expansion,” matching the new side with a similar look and appeal on the old old side. that’s what we got. In my opinion it’s a good think Barnes launched the remodel when he did because in this realignment era he could never have floated the proposition to donors
Be careful here, as was pointed out to me by another poster last week, the stadium is not technically “expanded.” Bigger, better does not met the definition of “expanded.”
If you include the student wellness center being built in the east side across from the bookstore – yeah, it WILL be used 365 days a year.
That’s actually a pretty brilliant way of connecting students to the football program
“Yeah, I’m here about an STD and condoms. Wait what? There’s a football game going on?”
“you might be able to learn something from the tight ends”.
https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/2385428
Interesting evaluation of the “Moneyball” draft approach. Apparently HS players have actually produced more WAR since then than college players have.
Sports Illustrated re-ranks every P5 program based on desirability.
OSU comes in 3rd from last thanks to Kansas and Houston.
https://www.si.com/college/2022/07/14/power-5-desirability-rankings-sec-big-ten-acc
Not surprising since the Beavs have had 8pm kickoffs for the last decade and no one watched east of Bend and no one attended outside of Corvallis. So if their 2 most important metrics are tv viewership and home attendance, thanks PAC12 network…of course the Beavs look bad. Also any program turmoil for a non blueblood school ends in lower numbers, plus the small window sample size contains the dumpster fire that was GA departure, the program at its lowest point since 1997…
Likely any other 5 year window within the past 25 gives a different picture for OSU football. But who cares, its just for fun and kicking the undesirables/confirmation that what they all thought was correct, no need to think about the leftovers because it is actually only about money and tv veiwership.
it could have been different, starting with Dennis staying longer than 4 years. He could have built a program that would’ve kept up with Oregon and UW.
… how is Oregon ranked 18 spots ahead of OSU, academically?
Underwater basket weaving is hard
Oh yeah how could I forget
I may be wrong, but I seem to remember reading that law and med school programs add to the ‘academic’ value of a school. They do have a law school so that may explain it??
Don’t tell Angry.
Miiiiiiitchhh! received a 5 year contract extension today, keeping him locked up through 2029….
Yeesh….i think after next season, people are going to question that decision because our talent level will take a big hit with all of the graduations and drafted players.
I still have confidence in him, but next year won’t be anywhere near the 2022 season.
https://twitter.com/BeaverBaseball/status/1548004723772387329?t=uRzYFzfqZz3wK30nwkNNNQ&s=19
Dorman and Gipson were extended through 2024 as well.
No word on Barney
Darwin is a volunteer assistant so no contract. Hopefully the 3rd assistant will be approved by the NCAA soon. He is paid strictly off of baseball camp revenue.
these extensions can be read two ways. (1) from the coaching staff perspective, they wanted some reassurance what with the realignment wars. (2) from the administration’s perspective, they think the Pac 10 will survive and thus these extensions are going to be affordable.
Oh god…awful decision again. Barnes is a disaster with these contracts.
Angry thinks it’s an awful decision. Immediate verification that it’s a good decision.
Uh huh. You said the same about Riley, Tinkle, et al.
Didn’t you say extending Tinkle was good? I remember I wasn’t really in love with it but people here called me dumb and eventually I said give him an extra year or two for the tourney run.
I can’t wait to quote this in a few years. Screen capped it.
I just saw a really nice quote from Colorado AD regarding PAC12 departures: “…we did not lose any team that has appeared in the CFP…”
Nice shot at USC/UCLA hubris and a quite down to earth response in the midst of the rumor mills.
I actually don’t hate this proposed conference realignment from the Athletic, which suggests merging Big12 and Pac12 and adding SMU/BYU to form a 24 team conference with 4 separate 6 team pods.
https://twitter.com/TheAthletic/status/1548001841291505666?s=20&t=mmh7vBqOazy3WrB4eFLsGQ
Pacific:(same as current Pac12 North)
Mountain(remaining Pac 12 South plus SDSU and BYU)
Central: Baylor/Houston/OKSt/SMU/TCU/TTech
Eastern: Cin/IowaSt/KSU/Kansas/WVU/UCF
Of course every team will want to have the SDSU road game on their schedule for recruiting purposes, but those would be pretty infrequent trips. Has the build in Utah/BYU rivalry.
Oregon and OKState would represent the mega donor contingent of teams that otherwise would be nobodies.
Most of the rest of the teams fall into that tier of competition that’s slightly better than the mountain west but worse than most Big10/SEC teams, right on par with OSU.
I’m for anything that allows OSU to continue to get enough money to pay competitive wages to coaches and that keeps OSU relevant enough to recruit at the P5 level and on tv.
Well said
I’ve only been following this cursorily and am somewhat overwhelmed.
Will it be a only a couple of schools from the Pac12 to elsewhere? More than two?
Don’t people who genuinely care for college sports, desire some semblance of parity to emerge out of this?
That would be my hope as the result of any major realignment.
I don’t know if it’s all bluster or if he has any real power, but Gavin Newsom is pissed off at UCLA. He was completely blindsided and as governor, it sounds like he’s the head of the California university system’s Regents?
https://sports.yahoo.com/gavin-newsom-says-uc-regents-001619006.html
P10 will stay at 10 teams. Media deal will be 4 years $300M per year. ACC partnership is added. WSU and OSU will take reduce rev share. No financial sense to add since it dilutes payout and there’s no teams that would add to P10 brand. B10 will not expand as the per team payout is already maxed out with current format… although ND would be no brainer but why would ND join. They can do better as independent.
I’d also say that if CU, Utah, ASU, and UA bolt to B12 it doesn’t matter if the core 6 (north division) stick together and add 4-6 of the following… Fresno St (central Cal), USDS (so Cal), BYU (national following- long shot), SMU (Texas recruiting), Boise St (national football brand but may not be worth it… if no BYU then no BSU) and UNLV (Vegas market). To pull this off you’d need varied distribution/payouts… UW, UO, BYU, Stanford would demand most… say $50M per year per team or $200M of TV revenue. Remaining 6-8 teams split the rest. I’d guess that if they could put the above package together, TV package would be valued at $400-500M per year. Even at $400M there’s still $200M to split to remaining 6-8 teams. $200M/8=$25M (plus power 5 status) which isn’t all that bad for those teams considering other potential options.
I stated back in 2020(among friends) that the Pac12 was officially dead. The SEC was the only conference that was willing to play ball even though it was ‘risky.’ Big10 finally was convinced to play also, not suprisingly, those conferences are the 2 ‘power’ conferences. We watched (boring) Pac12 games with no crowds (poster board crowds), while the big boys played on, gasp, in front of crowds. Honestly, we should all be thanking the SEC for saving college football…
I don’t believe that college football is a dying sport, it’s just changing with the times. It’s business, if you don’t adapt you fail. OSU needs to rebrand. Under Armour or Adidas to start. Lose the new beaver design. Lose the 3rd down chainsaw. Listen to your customers while also appealing to the masses. Most of all, there needs to be a standard among the fans that winning is the only option. Literally, I’m tired of fans that would be happy with a bowl game.
Can’t argue with those rebrand areas.
As for being “tired of fans that would be happy with a bowl game”……you been visiting with angry?
It is dying if you look at ratings, and that will only get worse given NIL and all the other issues. I mean, if you like arena league football and reality tv like Jersey Shore then NCAA football is going to work for you.
Ratings matter less than TV rights price tags right? I believe even though ratings are going down (like they are for all linear TV), live sports’ value is still going up because of the relative popularity in a market that’s been significantly diluted.
Great point about ratings angry. I see your pov on jersey shore, the competition for sports is much broader than in the past. You have to choose between Snookie and the beavers : )
Can’t buy that “winning is the only option” for college teams. Even the pros know better than that. Nobody is going to win all the time. Whether or not a team wins most of the time isn’t the criteria for many people, particularly alumni, or locals who support their teams through good and bad. Conversely, there have always been fair weather fans of top winning teams they have no particular connections with (going back to New York Yankees, Dallas Cowboys, etc.) but how somehow believe what the teams do is a reflection on their status as a person and they are not about to be caught dead supporting a team that isn’t in the top ranks.
You’re right that winning isn’t the only option, but look at the baseball team and how much that brand has continued to grow over the years–winning has to be a priority. So how do you draw fans in? Do you offer more entertainment options during the event? Do you lower ticket prices? When OSU designed the stadium, why didn’t they cover the seating for the whole stadium? Not only would it make the viewing experience more enjoyable for the fans, but also would have had the potential to be louder than Nike teams stadium. (if our fans had something to cheer about?)
Good point — fans need to see a competitive team that busts their butts to TRY to win every time out. And, winning a significant portion of the time is a priority, as you noted. Then real fans will stay with the team.
That is, stay with the team when they do lose — because they will some times.
“Nobody is going to win all the time.” Its going to get much tougher for USC (and UCLA if they go) to get a shot at the playoffs. But they’ll have more guaranteed money so the tradeoff is worth it to them. In fact, given their lack of football relevance the past decade (in winning, they still had recruiting relevance), they’re taking advantage of what the LA market offers the network, not what their team offers a new league in terms of competition. Its about money, not winning.
“… but how somehow believe what the teams do is a reflection on their status as a person…” Describes many UO fans. I’m always surprised at the number of UO alum who didn’t attend games in college, but who now constantly fly the Duck logos and colors. I have cousins that are prime, annoying examples. Or the fans who didn’t attend UO but act like they did.
…they’re taking advantage of what the LA market offers the network, not what their team offers a new league in terms of competition. Its about money, not winning.
Well said.
ZONABEAV is right, since Corvallis has no airport, Beavs Baseball has used winning to achieve a valuable position.
Dam right.
Jalen O’Neil, safety out of Manvel, TX.
He’s unranked by recruiting sites despite a handful of P5 offers(OSU, Indiana, Purdue)
I get the sense lately the recruiting sites arent putting much effort into ranking players anymore. Unless they have offers from the blue bloods.
He’s ranked on rivals. A 5.5 3 star the laziest rating of all and what seems that every OSU player ends up getting.
Junior film at CB:
https://247sports.com/Video/Jalen-ONeal-Manvel-2021-junior-season-highlights-10861328/
I saw that. I wonder if they want him as a safety or a corner.
I’m not sure he has the quickness and speed to play CB in DI and maybe that’s why he’s currently listed at safety? He’ll get bigger and faster though, so who knows.
I liked that he seemed to track primary and secondary assignments well, and didn’t give up on plays.
Liking these pick ups!
Pitch clock on way to MLB, potentially an automated strike zone:
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2022/07/17/mlb-futures-game-rule-changes-robo-ump-pitch-clock/10080287002/
It’s interesting how appealing to the ADD/ADHD crowd has complete destroyed baseball. Ratings hit an all time low. Manfred is a disaster. It’s also interesting the the hyper-corporatization of all sports at once is leading to the decline of all sports.
Automated strike zone would be a good thing, though.
Seems like it’s a problem that is endemic throughout sports. The world is changing faster and faster and league leadership is mostly depending on the same old tactics to cope with it.
To an extent, they’re suffering from demographic change, as well. Can’t do much about that.
Yeah. The NFL is doing a slightly better job, as always. NBA was over after Jordan when it became totally ghetto. MLB tends to have ups and downs, but the direction right now is so down it might not recover. They’ve alienated the biggest baseball fans to appears the Jersey Shore, ADD, Arena league type crowd.
I know players hate playing in the NFL, but as a fan, it might be the only decently run league left.
“Myth #3: Lower Viewership Numbers Means Baseball Is “Dying””
https://www.forbes.com/sites/maurybrown/2021/11/02/dispelling-myths-late-world-series-starts-tv-viewership-and-mlb-is-dying/?sh=46fbf5db6029
OrangeJulius… Great article, full of facts. I am sure we’ll see someone try to dispel it lol. It doesn’t fit the narrative above.
It’s funny to hear people consistently saying a sport is dying. I mean I can literally find an article for any sport about it dying slowly. Yet every single one of those sports are still around. Boxing was supposed to be dead years ago, yet it’s still here. Golf was supposed to be dead, still here. I can go on and on. I challenge anyone with those pessimistic views to show me one sport that doesn’t exist anymore. I have a feeling you are gonna have trouble. Hell I saw the rock skipping championships on ESPN the other day lol. Sports don’t die, they do change.
Yeah and their ratings plummet. Nobody said they go extinct.
Yep change the goalposts again. I think dead means extinct but what do I know. Boxing goes up and down in popularity but it’s still around lol. I guess I don’t understand your point, what’s so bad about any of this, seems pretty typical of any sport.
Also, where’s Whiskey? Wanted to hear his thoughts about his Mariners prediction. You missed the mark a little bit buddy. I wish I would have bet you some money lol.
Mariners are looking amazing headed into the All Star break. They’ve won 14 in a row. It’s a fun year to be a fan. Julio Rodriguez is looking like a perennial all star. Robbie Ray looking like a true ace. Then to have a great bullpen and defense to back it up, seems like a team that will compete this year.
Remember, the mariners were called dead too this year lol.
I’ve noticed. I said they’d be 10 games out of the division at the all star break. The actual number is 9. Wasn’t too far off, was I?
They’re on a tear right now. But the regular season is filled with many peaks and valleys. You didn’t say jack shit when they were terrible in May.
If they make the playoffs, which I have serious doubts they will, I will come back to eat crow. Got it clown?
It was a loaded prediction as you know lol and you still missed. Astros have the third best record in all of baseball. Mariners have the 8th best. I am glad to hear you’ll own up to your poor take.
Back to the circus for me, Lmao!
They’re barely in wild card position at the AS break after a 14-game winning streak. That means they’re going to cool off at some point, so they better hope the rest of the pack does, too.
Seattle Mariners. 2022 2nd place division, regular season champions. At the all star break.
Haha! They are the hottest team in MLB and it’s not exactly close. Outside of of the streak they are 22-3 in their last 25 games. They lead in most pitching metrics for their bullpen and starters over the last month. Yeah they won’t keep this going at this rate but if you factor in they have the 4th weakest schedule the rest of way, this team is a lock for the playoffs. Can’t wait to hear the lame excuses of why they made it from you guys lol.
I’ll shit on it.
Please explain to the group the teams they’ve beat? Only 6 wins against teams over .500.
Yes I’m aware they went 6-0 against the Blue Jays and Padres. Two teams that have been playing extremely poorly the last month. The rest of those wins came against the Rangers, A’s, Angels and Orioles. Wow.
Not exactly murderers row.
But hey, you keep thinking the Mariners are turning a corner. They’re awesome.
“They are the hottest team in MLB and it’s not exactly close. Outside of of the streak they are 22-3 in their last 25 games.”
The LA Dodgers are 20-5 in their last 25 games
This reminds me of last year where they flirted with the post season due to a pretty incredible run for like the final 6 weeks or so. I’d love to see the Mariners have success but history is not on their side. Great momentum for sure. Hope they can remain consistent.
Whiskey, who do they play for the rest of the season, lol? 69 Games left, 7 against the Astros (they don’t play them after July at all), 6 against the Yankees, 3 against the Braves, and 2 against the Padres. That leaves 51 games against teams with a worse record. 32 of those games are against the Athletics, Angels, Tigers, Nationals, and Royals (all terrible teams). Looks like a pretty good road to the playoffs, which is what we are talking about, right? Or are you changing the goal posts again because your prediction is off?
Cooper Hjerpe to the Cards at number 22. Was Hoping the Mariners were taking him.
Me 2
So someone asked above where the improvement on defense will come from so I thought I would take a stab at reasons to be hopeful.
1. New DC in Bray. The jury is still out on him obviously but I do think we’ll see improvement partly because he can’t be worse than Tibs. I do think we’ll see more aggressiveness and that will lead to more sacks and turnovers. Also I think theyll feed off of Bray’s energy.
2. Maturity and experience. This team now has a lot of players that have played a lot of snaps. Most of the 2 deep at every position has a decent amount of playing time already.
3. Development. I think this will mostly be seen on the DL as they’re the ones that have to do the most to change they’re bodies by putting on good healthy weight. Guys like Lolohea, and Sio hopefully have changed their bodies in a good way. It will be interesting to see the weight changes when they come out. I think coach MacDonald has done a great job since arriving here in this department.
4. Health. A healthy Hodgins, Julian, Mccartan and Robinson will be a big boost here.
5. Influx of talent. The big name here is Chatfield and hopefully can be the difference maker for the pass rush. There is a bunch of the younger giys that Smith recruited that should start to make impacts. Guys like Mascarenas, Faamoe, the new DT, Thomas, Fisher, Massey etc. Roberts was a beast but Fisher is much faster so he can help with pass rush and in coverage.
Good points. I’m excited about bray as well. However, the bowl game really sucked and I was surprised the defense didn’t adjust better against a new, very inexperienced qb.
I think you’re referring to my post, which was in response to some list that had us as a top 30 defense nationally or something like that. I believe we’ll continue to get slightly better on that side of the ball, but I don’t see anything to suggest we’ll take that big of a big leap.
You can’t take health for granted. Even if we get those injured guys back, it’s a guarantee we’ll lose one or more key guys to injury. Also, having more experience isn’t always a good thing if the returning guys just weren’t very good to begin with. I do think Old Man Roberts moving on may be addition by subtraction in coverage.
Something we’ve lacked on D for a while is a truly game breaking player. Someone that consistently makes big plays on that side of the ball. We’ve had solid, consistent guys in the past (e.g. Roberts, Oladadpo) but the D won’t truly take a big step forward until they can consistently generate negative plays and turnovers.
Biggest question I have is whether the LB’s can play coverage. It hurt us in the games vs Wazzu, Arizona, and Hole.
Otherwise, the DB’s should be good enough to play man-to-man, and the DL will have more depth to get a push up the middle.
Like what was said above Roberts was a liability in coverage so could be addition by subtraction there. I think Bray understands better of how to use the linebackers. We could all see it but Tibs couldn’t.
Melton picked Houston
Glad he got picked up but I hate the trash-stros.
It’s baseball, so he’ll probably be traded before he makes it to the majors
By*
Boyd to reds
Ok, here’s where we have to be selfish and hope Turley’s name continues to not be called. Don’t see him not being taken fairly soon but curious how low he’d have to go to come to Corvallis. Maybe seeing 2 OF being drafted in the 1st round would be reason enough if he’s in the low 2nd or high 3rd. Knowing that 60% of our offense was drafted last night really scares me who will help bazanna and Forrester next year. I kind of get the feeling that meckler would leave if taken in the draft at any #. He had a really good year and I’m not sure what more he could really do to push his draft stock higher. Maybe I’m being overly pessimistic but if no Turley, Boyd, Melton, meckler (?) It looks to be a 2 man show with some strong indicators that Trosky could pitch in as well. Reed had a lot of promise in HS but has not played in nearly 2 years now due to injuries if I’m not mistaken so who knows what that looks like.
Turley was quoted in an article from a few days ago saying “Sunday will determine whether he goes to college or not.” He hasn’t been drafted yet, so it seems positive for us unless someone drafts him and pays over slot.
Also, Guerra is a good candidate to step up.
Thx for info. Hadn’t seen that quote from him. Obviously hope he comes to osu but can understand going pro for sure.
https://mobile.twitter.com/BeaverBaseball/status/1549113236284313601?cxt=HHwWgsCo2fyRx_8qAAAA
Frisch to cubs
Good for him. Selfishly i was hoping he’d come back. Would’ve been great for that rotation.
Meckler to SF in round 8. Probably gone? I don’t see much upside for him staying in college. Seems like his game is what it is at this point.
Logan to d backs
I sense the built in Miiiitch excuses with each draft pick.
Yeah its def shows that he’s a terrible manger. Developing tons of talent that makes it to the MLB. I am sure he’ll forget to develop the players who stay on team? Great take!
Nice excuse. Remember when they weren’t his players? That was your other excuse. Now they’re his players because they’re going pro. Anyway, Casey had guys go pro and new guys lined up. Any competent manager does. Great take!!
Who said they weren’t his players? They weren’t high ranked high school prospects and now they are getting drafted, weird. Must not have had anything to do with the coaching they received? That’s your point, right?
What’s interesting is you made my point for me. The next guys up he’s developing as we speak, just like Casey.
I can definitely see a drop off next year because of all the talent leaving however I don’t think it will be a sign that he’s taking a step backward. They’ll probably still stay in the upper half of the league.
It’s over unfortunately. That was it, Casey isn’t here and Miittchh has a track record of not developing players (Heavy Sarcasm.)
But isn’t that ok because now the guys coming in are highly rated? So they’re good anyway? No need for coaching!
@Beav in OH… 100% Haha! We should be able to out athlete the hell out of teams next year!
@Angry… You’ve really fortified your position now. Can’t wait to see how the narrative changes as the year goes on. Get to thinking about how to form you pessimistic views for next season when the team is successful.
Just cut the program already
Gimme sheep or gimme death.
Next year should be a lot of fun. I look forward to the hamster wheeling. Work on the excuses now, guys, so you have ’em refined and ready!
Turley still on the board, so it looks like he’ll be a Beav. Scouting report says he’s “toolsy” with near-elite speed and power, but needs to become more consistent. Hopefully Miiiiitch and co. can turn him into the next Melton.
P Tyler Gough drafted in round 9…probably too late to keep him from going to college, right?
I saw on Twitter that reportedly Gough and the Mariners already made a private agreement to sign before they picked him. Sucks because he probably would’ve have been a starter too.
Really? The slot pay for 9th round isn’t exactly life changing money.
Yeah, seems like he’s gone.
https://twitter.com/A_Jude/status/1549145086469885952

No merger between PAC-12 and Big 12
https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/34264518/sources-big-12-pac-12-partner-talks-officially-end
Just kicks the can for 2 years until UO and UW will leave. Klaikoff better have an iron clad non departure for the remaining 10 teams or this is another disaster in the making.
There is no way the conference will be even close to competitive with the other conferences. They are fooling themselves over tv contracts that will already be quite diminished. Merging into the first mega conference seems to be the best option but it was PAC officials who sunk the idea. I’ll watch how things progress but this strikes me as the nail in the coffin and PAC has zero leverage in any future negotiations with conferences or tv/media. Too bad
it was probably a study of Pac 12 ratings that sabotaged the deal. An outfit called sportsmediawatch.com recently posted ratings for the Pac 12 going back five years. They ranked the teams according to teams who had games over 1 million viewers, conference games over 1 million viewers, regular season games over 4 million viewers, and times at which that team’s games were among the conference’s top 5 most watched games.
To no one’s surprise, SC came in at #1, followed by UW, UO, WSU (!), Stanford, UCLA, Utah, ASU, Colorado, Cal, Zona and yep, at #12, OSU. Just to give you a flavor of the metric, here’s a comparison between UO, #3, and OSU
UO
35 games over 1 million viewers
29 conference games over 1 million viewers
3 reg seasons games over 4 million viewers
12 times in other Pac 12 teams top five most watched conference game
OSU
4 games over 1 million viewers
10 conference games over 1 million viewers
0 reg. season games over 4 million viewers
0 games in other Pac 12 team’s top 5 most watched conf. games (kinduva attractiveness measure)
For what it’s worth, the most watched game in the five years surveyed came in 2019 vs. Oklahoma State.
Just solidifies my belief that when this all shakes out, OSU and WSU will be begging the Mountain West to take them.
It’s hard to have a game with over 1 million views when they all start at 10PM.
That most watched game between Oklahoma St and Oregon St that wannabeav referenced above?
7:30pm kick off
https://osubeavers.com/sports/football/stats/2019/oklahoma-state/boxscore/14170
Well, I was speaking in generalities. In general, we get the shitty late starts, and in general, nobody is going to watch those games. You lose the entire East Coast, for one, and then you lose a lot of old people who go to bed earlier than the kickoffs. You’re left with people like ABers…and there aren’t a million of us, apparently.
That Oklahoma State game was a pretty exciting game, in theory, so it’s not surprising it did well. I’d be curious how many people were still tuned in when it was 31-16 at the half. Michigan, Penn State, Boise…all those games were exciting…until they kicked off.
Me obsess angry

Monday’s Major League Baseball Home Run Derby averaged 7.13 million viewers on ESPN and ESPN2, the largest audience for the event since 2017 (8.35M). The combined audience, which peaked with 8.69 million from 9:30-9:45 PM ET, increased 13% from the last time the event was held in 2019 (6.20M)
Yep mlb is dying! That’s the proof angry needed! Lol
Yeah that proves it. Why don’t you look at the past decade of actual games, not HR derbies? Lol!
And here’s the ratings for the biggest game of them all: https://www.baseball-almanac.com/ws/wstv.shtml
That is a brutal record of decline going back 30 years.
All star games are also in a brutal decline: https://www.baseball-almanac.com/asgbox/asgtv.shtml
7.1m is a joke and continues the downtrend in that game. The all star game is in a 35 year bear market.
But, great point otherwise! Lol!
I think the only argument that can be made is that attendance is up over that period, but that’s flawed for many reasons, including there are just flat out many more people in the US (I think over 2x) over that period. And the problem there is it’s a lot of corporations, wall st, et al buying the seats. So baseball is relying on population growth and corporations to fuel revenues, and that’s not a good formula for long-term success, though it might be a good formula for medium-term revenues. This is why salaries are rising despite the game dying. The actual hardcore fans of the game…fans of the game itself…are in rapid decline. What you have are wealthy people who want to show up at a Dodgers game and show off their new hairstyle and their seats and Tweet about it. Corporations that want to put their name on a stadium and gobble up seats as part of the deal. Goldman Sachs buying up Yankee game tickets. That’s not an indication of a healthy game.
1994 strike was a real turning point. They lost a lot of my generation (Gen X), especially the hardcore kids passionate about the game. Some of us came back after the steroid era ended. The game briefly got good again. But baseball messed it up again by juicing the ball. They think people want HRs, when what people really want is action. It’s ironic, because HRs stop action, as do strikeouts. The biggest problem for baseball is it’s now a 3 outcome game. HR/BB/K. That’s the #1 issue. Many hardcore fans would come back if they could solve that, because solving that leads to action, strategy, etc, and all the things that make the game wonderful and interesting. Manfred has been the worst Commish in history, which isn’t helping matters.
Got to give it to you, your giant article that I didn’t read convinced me angry, lmao! Anyways it was fun watching Julio tonight and I’ll continue watching the team he plays for on illegal streams that don’t get counted. But you are right, no one watches (stadium sold out Friday) and the sport is dying. Lmao, stick to football.
Well yeah, you have to be literate to read it.
So much of this is demographics, though. Yes, Manfred sucks. But baseball was THE sport in the US for over half a century. When you lose a whole generation that worshiped the game, it’s impossible to replace those viewers with a new generation that has always had way more entertainment options.
Of course, baseball reached its popularity heights because it was always the most accessible sport, and as you pointed out, it’s anything but that now.
Yeah a lot of this started in the 50s and early 60s as baseball was slow to adopt tv and slow to expand west. Football did both and began to overtake it rapidly. NFL had two west coast teams for years before baseball had one. Baseball also put in blackout rules to force people to the park. Instead people just watched football, which didn’t do this at the time.
The steroid era and 94 strike compounded the problems. It’s funny manfred thinks the problem is speed of the game. Historically that’s not the case and 3hr games became the norm in the 1880s when the began refining the pitcher/batter distance and bullpen rules. Still the game was faster back then. Hardcore baseball fans like/prefer the slow pace. Ironically it’s the modern three outcome game (hr, bb, k) that mlb encouraged that’s slowing the pace.
…action, strategy, etc, and all the things that make the game wonderful and interesting.
Very good point, angry. Hit & Run, Sac, smart baserunning, defensive positioning for a DP, just some of the factors that make the game interesting.
Is the counterpoint the thought that today’s generations are hooked on instant gratification and don’t have the patience/interest in observing/analyzing strategy? Either way, your point still stands that HR/BB/K do stop/slow the action.
In the past HRs were somewhat rare, so it was an exciting play. Ray Chapman died in 1920 when he was hit by a pitch – that was the end of the Dead Ball era, end of small ball. The argument was the ball was dark because they used one ball per game during the dead ball era, and because it was so dirty and scuffed up Chapman didn’t see it. MLB made it mandatory that new balls were used if the old was scuffed at all. Ray Champan’s death is what brought on the modern/HR age. It’s imperative to realize that pitch Carl Mays threw changed baseball forever. MLB realized the HR was an exciting play and began to double down on it, not only making sure all balls were fresh, but also juicing the ball to take advantage of the fan’s love of Ruth and the HR. There is evidence of juiced balls going back to 1920 with Ruth. Balls surviving from that era show a very tightly wound ball. It is 99.99% likely those balls Ruth hit were hyper-juiced. It’s probable the Yankees had their own balls that were more juiced than MLBs hyper-juiced balls of that era. There’s some evidence of this if you read the baseball historians. If you look at Ruth’s swing, it is terrible. He actually walks toward the plate and then twists around, stepping in the bucket and pulling his head out. But anyway, Ruth and his juiced balls (haha), of course, brought on the HR craze.
Before that, the triple and SB were the most exciting plays. E.g. Ty Cobb.
So, to each their own. But the problem with the HR craze is it reduces action, and reducing action increases the time of the ball game. More walks equals more pitches. More pitchers going for the strikeout equals more walks. More batters going for the home run equals more waiting for pitches to drive rather than stroking singles, doubles, triples and hitting to the opposite field. It all equals the inferior game of today with very little action. Baseball isn’t boring because the time of games. Baseball is boring because there is no action.
Manfred’s solution to this is to put in clocks, put runners on 2B in extra innings, restrict relief pitcher usages, and all the other ridiculous rule changes. It’s such a disaster. If you want to solve baseball’s problems, you move the mound back 1ft to discourage strikeouts, move the fences back to incentivize singles, doubles, triples, stolen bases, etc, and owners then begin paying players who do those things well, creating a feedback loop. Also stop juicing the ball. MLB can change the game overnight and make it a more dynamic game. Right now it is seriously out of balance. Manfred’s “solutions” make it more out of balance. It’s imperative to move the mound back for several reasons: athletes today are much more well trained than athletes of the 1880s when 60’6″ was standardized. They’re also taller, and taller means they can shorten the distance even further (Randy Johnson didn’t throw 100mph – he was just so long he shortened that distance by a few feet, and that’s the reading he got on the guns). The mound must be moved back at least a foot to compensate for all of this. The HR has become a marginalized play. Scrubs can hit many HRs now.
What’s interesting is the highest rated WS of the past 40 years was the Cubs. It shows baseball fans still love the story, the superstition, and the underdog. It’s always been about this. Not bat flips and ghetto behavior under the guise of “individualism in the game”…as that ticks up, ratings tick down. MLB is getting by on population growth, which is not sustainable long-term. At some point the game will have to make these changes or continue to die the slow death. And it is slow, but it’s dying and has been since the 1950s when the NFL took over, but really picked up this process in the 1980s and then post 1994 strike. We could see an even more rapid decline with the advent and encouragement of the aforementioned ghetto behavior. It’s as bad as an NFL player celebrating a first down after a 1 yard run. Just a really bad look for the games that turns off thoughtful fans. You are left with viewers who like Jersey Shore and ghetto entertainment rather than the cerebral fans who like strategy, and thus you are on your way to becoming WWF, Arena League, etc.
The interesting thing to me is that Dead Ball style baseball is similar to some of the changes you’re seeing in other sports attempting to make them more action packed (e.g. rugby sevens, 3v3 basketball, 3v3 or 4v4 hockey, tiki-taka style socccer). The ultimate goal is more actions per minute to keep the viewer engaged. Baseball has been going the opposite direction for years.
Yep. And it makes sense why in a way. “If home runs are good then more home runs is better!” Logical in a way but also first level thinking.
I confess to not knowing the situation for the other P12 schools and who they have leaving and coming in from a baseball perspective but hard to not think that we might be in for 2 years of middle of the pac results and realistically on the outside looking in at some post-season play. Thinking of posting my thoughts on the other position groups, not that anyone cares or that they’re relevant at all lol, but wanted to start with the outfield now that all 3 starters have been taken in the draft.
Big question marks around the outfield:
Replacing the entire outfield, which was also the vast majority of the offense, is a tall order. While the offensive concerns of replacing the bulk of the offensive output are a big issue, there’s also big questions regarding the defensive side of the ball. New players stepping in, youth and little to no experience and players making transitions to new positions (speculation is Bazanna moves to outfield) is not a great recipe. Hard to gauge the replacements as most saw very limited time but Kasper didn’t look very comfortable on defense and outside of 1 game, didn’t do much offensively. McDowell will be the most tenured and has been pretty awful the last 2 years despite playing well as a freshman. Dukart didn’t play much but struck out 4 or 5 times in the 1 game I remember him in. Reed to me is a huge question mark not only from a health perspective but also hasn’t played in essentially 2 years. Obviously some great potential but injuries and that much time off are big hurdles. My uneducated guess is Turley, Bazanna and McDowell or Kasper are the outfield. While bazanna was fantastic at 2nd, this staff is all about Dernedde for some reason and I think Trosky is the best SS we have but they seem unwilling to change. So move Trosky to 2nd, bazanna to OF in order to get your best players on the field.
Yes recruiting classes have been great under Mitch but the outfield talent remains to be seen and the fact that Fuchs hitting like .220 the entire season didn’t have any playing time taken by the younger guys is interesting. Other factors likely contributed to that but IMO he didn’t seem to do much to warrant not even getting some of the others a little more of a look. Anyway, I’m just some dude sitting in an office chair and likely my take is completely off base but the outfield may be the biggest question mark facing this team next year.
Pfennings drafted. 13th rnd. Rotation down to Kmatz and Hunter now. Starting pitching also a question next year. Oh my.
Surely Pfennigs has more to gain by coming back, right?
Honestly, I don’t know if he was going to be our Friday guy. He has a ton of potential but seems like the same player 3 years in as he was when he got here. Granted some injuries involved but I think he could’ve used another year but on the flip side, if he’s not really progressed during his time then perhaps it is best to get different instruction. Felt like Kmatz and Hunter were more reliable last year. Good luck to him for sure!
Carpenter drafted

Not sure why this posted twice. Time to start drinking I guess
Turley in 19th round. Quite a drop. Selected by Diamondbacks. Unless there’s some type of deal outside of the draft slot you’d assume he’d be coming to Corvallis right? Not sure if home town team makes a difference in baseball?
Beavers apparently have marketing tie in w/VW: the Beaver van:
https://cleantechnica.com/2022/07/18/volkswagen-id-buzz-camper-gets-the-ff-treatment/amp/
Imo, if ferrer comes back, he should be the Friday starter
Did he not get drafted?
Parker said ferrer is going to back
Be*
Turley coming to the Beavs!
He has a good shot at playing right away. Makes sense for him.
Based on our returning outfield I’d say it’s his job to lose unless he’s really that raw
If he thought he was a first-round pick, I hope he can come right in and contribute. Reed, too, for that matter. Interesting that both Turley and Reed have similar scouting reports.
Going back to the declining popularity of MLB. I think one factor that no one is mentioning is the success of the team and where they are located. Atlanta and Oakland have roughly the same population. Atlanta is getting 38K a game whereas Oakland is getting 9k. This all has to do with how good their team is. When the bigger city teams are successful the overall numbers for the league go up, its just plain logic. That being said COVID factors in all of this too. I think there are many factors outside of overall popularity of the sport which may be in decline but its not even close to the biggest factor, IMO.
https://www.axios.com/2022/07/20/mlb-baseball-attendance-falling-2022
Don’t watch mlb but when Oakland is good don’t they still have low attendance?
Yep. A’s never draw much even when they’re good. If you’ve ever been to Oakland Coliseum you would understand why… it’s beyond gross and decrepit. With a new stadium in a different neighborhood, they’d probably draw pretty well.
Great points Krol and Beaverpride. That brings up other factors: facilities, ticket prices, the economy come to mind. All contributing factors, more than the sport itself. Sure there are certain folks turned off by the changes in MLB but I feel they are in the minority and these other factors are a bigger driving force.
You’re in the minority if you think people don’t mind increasingly long, boring games. There have been dozens of handwringing articles written about it.
I don’t mind long games. In fact I used to love putting on Vin Scully while doing something else and having the din of baseball on in the background. What I do mind is no action. The BB, K, HR outcomes is the huge problem. I also stopped watching completely in 2021 due to the ghetto bat flip stuff. It’s super jersey shore/ghetto. It’s as embarrassing as celebrating a 1st down on a 1 yard run.
I am too not a fan of showboating, because I was raised young in that game and always abided by the unwritten rules. However, I see the younger folks from t-ball going up to high school, all doing the bat flips, outfield dances, etc. Its more of a cultural change and I’ve learned to accept it somewhat. I mean I was against TD celebrations in football but actually found myself entertained by some of the creativity. That being said I can understand why it would turn you away.
For every article I see about its decline I see another one who says its more popular than ever. Of course if “you” yourself find it boring and long than you’ll be drawn to those articles, especially if “you” use google. I’ve watched more baseball this year than I have in a long time so maybe I am in the minority, I don’t know, I just like baseball and don’t find it long or boring. Many people find soccer boring (me) and its a damn popular sport, talk about slow. It seems to be a personal preference thing over anything.
True, it can be creative, and things like that go waaay back to the Icky Shuffle, etc. But, those celebrations were TDs. Celebrating a short 1st down is embarrassing. Celebrating a HR in this era, when literally the bat boy can hit them given how tightly wound/juiced the ball is, is also embarrassing. Celebrating a walk-off win with some creative moves – not embarrassing. It’s really the context.
I see, yeah not a fan of that behavior at all. 100%, context is what matters. Bat flip against a rival or after you gave the team the lead, I can see it, even though its something I would never do. However, when your teams down 10 and you hit a solo shot and then do the bat flip, feels like a selfish bush league move.
The juiced baseball debate is an interesting one, I haven’t been convinced either way, I’ve heard some compelling arguments from both sides.
To me I think the over analyzation has lead to more home runs with less averages. The analytics state that you’ll find more success with a lower average and more homeruns. Players literally train to hit homeruns and not worry about strikeouts.
Hell I see this in slow pitch softball all the time, guys just try to mash homeruns and end up hitting one or much more often just flying out.
Then you go watch the seniors leagues and they don’t have the power. Singles and doubles, station to station, all day. They end up putting up more runs than the young guys. Guaranteed my dads 70’s team can beat our 30-40 year old team.
I think you’ll see a shift at some point back to that small ball play.
It’s similar to the NBA, seems like its all about the three point shooting now, not the low post play of the past. It’s hard to know what will stick, I think both sports are ever evolving.
Buy a modern ball and take it apart. Buy one off Ebay from other eras and take it apart. I think you will get your answer. People who have done things like this say it’s 100% uber-juiced.
I hope we see a move back to balanced baseball. It doesn’t have to be small ball. 1986 was a great year for baseball, and it wasn’t exactly small ball, but it wasn’t this nonsense, either. A balanced game is best. A game where sluggers or small ball can win is best.
I don’t have enough knowledge to discern what would make it more juiced or how much distance that would effect. I will admit I did watch a Mariners game that the ball wasn’t carrying well at all and some hits that normally would go over the fence didn’t. That being said, you have to factor in a ton of conditions in how a ball flies, weather being one of them.
I guess the most compelling argument against it being juiced, is just the work it would take to arrange that conspiracy.
“In order to juice balls, MLB would need cooperation among the cork makers in Mississippi, the yarn spinners in Vermont and the hide sewers in Costa Rica, plus those who test the balls in St. Louis, and the final layers of quality control, the clubhouse attendants who rub them with mud and the umpires who keep a bagful at a time.”
I could see some minor changes to home run rate based on the ball. But knowing how much it would effect is hard to gauge to say the least.
We have so many better training methods and medical advances available today and I believe the league by a whole is more athletic of times past. Bigger stronger skilled guys are gonna hit the ball further. I think that is likely the bigger factor. AI, showing you how to swing more efficiently, etc.
Do you have any data that you could point me to that proves their is a huge difference? Has someone actually measured distances? That would the biggest metric, if there was a huge distance change. The ball is gonna change, there is no way to guarantee its the same every time but if we are talking a 30-40ft difference than I get with the conspiracy.
Seattle has detrimental park factors with hitting. 98 88 56 94 || 97 84 89 98
Those are singles, doubles, triples and HRs for LH and RH batters. The pipe in the middle is just separating L vs R hitters. League average is 100. So you can see those numbers are well below in everything. Basically, the park represses all types of hits. They should focus on stolen bases, OBP via BB, and small ball since their park represses hitting.
Park factors are huge in baseball, almost everything. It’s why the Rockies can’t win. Their park curses them. They should really change the dimensions and type of player (terrible management, though, that will never understand this).
Regarding HR rates, I don’t know since I don’t follow MLB anymore, but last I looked HR were going up every year.
Sorry if I didn’t make it clear, I was asking about the juiced ball thing. I was wondering if there was data out there.
This was actually one ballgame that was out of the ordinary where the ball just wasn’t carrying.
The mariners have won 14 in a row. And they done with everything in the kitchen sink. Clutch has been their mainstay. Many of wins were when they were doing win in a game. And they’ve won a ton on the road.
They play good ball I think you’d like it. I’ve seen Julio turn a single into a double. I’ve seen him make a 99 mph throw and get a guy at third base.
All in all the game may have changed and isn’t it perfect but it can be fun to watch. Especially skilled players, playing a game many love.
I hate it when they play loud chainsaw noises after a guy draws a walk….
Or 3rd and 3 in a 40-3 blowout.
They also play in a 2 team market. Unlike Atlanta. So there is that.
Even if you combine the average attendance of both teams it is still less than the average attendance in Atlanta by almost 10k per game.
49ers averaged almost 67k in 8 home games in 8 in 2021. 19th in a 32 team league. Also an apples to oranges comparison.
The record attendance at Oakland Coliseum was for an A’s/Giants game in 2018. Then Covid hit and there were no fans. Add in that the A’s suck. And their stadium is a shit hole. And they need a new stadium. And been fighting for years to get one. All that adds up to low attendance.
This is overall a terrible comparison between Atlanta and Oakland.
I’m not convinced a new stadium would cure what ails them. And honestly, much like the Raiders did? The A’s are probably Vegas bound.
Attendance is also down for 23 of the 30 teams in MLB for the 5th consecutive non covid related season.
The point(s)?
1. Bay area fans just don’t give a shit about sports. College or pro.
2. The attendance figures support Angry’s opinion about baseball.

I am tired of all the articles of doom and gloom. I guess my point is this game will be continued to be played and watched. There are tens of millions of fans. It will never go away. It might decline like all sports do but it will always be around. I will likely continue to watch it with all the other millions of people.
Not positive because I don’t follow recruiting very close but looked to see where they were ranked. I think the top recruit in the class (forgot his name) dropped in rating. I thought he was like a high 91 composite and now is a 90 something. Obviously doesn’t matter but is this the classic beaver rating system? Does anyone remember his rating when he committed?
Tale as old as time. Chiles would have increased for sure if he hadn’t committed with the attention he was getting.
I just saw that OT Roger Alderman is planning to commit later this month. Anyone have any feeling on this? He has another very good offer sheet like many other commits this cycle. Looks like it would be another big time commit. The Beavs were his last visit so thats a good sign.
Its great to see a well regarded tackle recruit, always a position of need and value and a always a selling point to QBs.
You would have to think coach M is a huge selling point. The fact they’re considered one of the best OLs in football being a team not nearly as highly ranked in other categories aside from rushing offense which goes back to the OL. If you’re a guy with pro aspirations you would like to play under him. Not sure what his track record is for actually sending guys to the pros but it seems that he can definitely get the most out of the talent he is given.
Kippers move to RG is intriguing. I felt he always struggled with speed rush on the outside. He has put on size and could be a dominant force there. Let’s hope Fuaga can be as good or better in pass pro. I think he has a higher ceiling than Kipper but unfortunately I know ther will be growing pains. At least he has a decent amount of playing time coming in.
Current list for convenience:

It should ve interesting where they stand if those bottom 3 get ranked.
Gotta love the pics of the All-Time Commits, especially Simi Kuli, Ruben Jackson, and Brandon Lockheart!
Thanks for the link/laugh.
Trip down memory lane lol
ESPN with a story up about two hours ago detailing Gavin Newsom’s meeting with the LA Times editorial board questioning the decision-making behind UCLA’s decision to leave the conference, emphasizing the deleterious effect on UC-Berkeley’s status and finances. One idea floated is that UCLA will have to reimburse the Bears for lost revenue from out of their new found Big 10 wealth.
Reimburse them one time or every year? Big difference. If it’s one time it’s a big nothing burger.
There were two ideas (and they were basically just floated out there): an exit fee UCLA would pay to Cal or an ongoing payment UCLA would owe them from their Big Ten money.
None of this is going to be a dealbreaker and it sounds like UCLA’s decision was made according to the rules. It’s just political showmanship from a wannabe presidential candidate.
Did he blame the PAC’s problems on climate change and transphobia?
Mike leach blamed poor leadership, I.e Larry, google it to find article
Hey now, that wannabe presidential candidate is likely going to win in 2024.
Don’t shoot the messenger
Welcome to my world.
Is blaming “Larry Scott” for the Pac-12’s troubles shorthand for “we just don’t have the passionate fan bases and markets that will pay huge amounts for a cable channel and warrant Fox and ESPN dumping wads of cash at our feet and feature us on nationwide games between Noon and 6 p.m. local time ttho put us on the same level as the Big 10 and SEC?”
I understand the criticisms of Scott’s tenure – he provided the conference with a “big league” appearance, the bells and whistles of a conference network and downtown SF offices, events in Vegas – but the truth is, even a Direct TV deal wouldn’t have made a difference in the revenue disparity. And P12 teams had to play late Saturday games (against other P12 games airing elsewhere) and on Thursday nights just to get that close to the SEC and Big 10. It’s not like Fox and ESPN were in a bidding war for the Pac-12 package. Not sure there is that much untapped revenue potential given the relatively lesser fan engagement and that most schools are in pro markets facing competition from at least one and up to four pro teams for sports dollars.
Holy run on sentence batman!
This is spot on. PAC-10 will always have less TV earning potential because of the time zone difference and the lack of a regional obsession with football.
It is what it is, and it’s a perfect example of how money can ruin a good thing.

As if on cue…here’s an article about how baseball is suffering.
-On pace for 25-year low in attendance (other sports aren’t)
-TV rights value actually declined and NBA is about to overtake MLB as second most valuable rights
-Declining youth participation
It’s bad. I’m diehard and gave up in 2021. Manfred/rule changes and things like clocks were the final straw.
Baseball blows unless the beavers are playing
Good point. College baseball is still more fun to watch. Shorter games and more variation in play.
Seems to me many of the things that make college baseball “more fun to watch” are along the lines of the discussion here about what would happen if the football elites formed two NFL farm systems and the rest of college FB reverted to regional rivalries and a more STUDENT-Athlete model.
Check out the wood bat summer league
Baseball is an excuse for people to go out, drink outside and hang out with friends – and bring the kids along. You can’t do that at a bar. Check out a Corvallis Knights games – two thirds of the crowd are hanging out in Casey’s Corner or Banners.
I didn’t realize it until now, but JUCO P Geo Rivera was drafted by Cleveland in the 19th Round. As of a month or 2 ago he had “Oregon State Commit” in his social media bio, but it’s gone now so he must be signing with them.
Brandin Cooks 13th highest paid WR in NFL:

13. Brandin Cooks, Texans: $19.882 million ($39.764 million over 2 years) .
While I don’t support a bunch of in-bred coaching or other hires, Cooks is someone I’d love to see come back and work for OSU football someday, assuming they’ve got a meaningful program after conference “realignment.” He’s not only a Biletnikoff winner, he’s worked with HOF QBs Brees and Brady, been to a couple of super bowls, and a played under progressive offensive coachs in NO and LA. If the concussions don’t limit him, he could have an administrative and representative role in recruiting, or maybe if he got into coaching (which I doubt he’d be interested in given his wealth), something on the offensive side of the ball (OC).
Kirby Smart cashing in:
“More than six months after Kirby Smart delivered Georgia football its first national championship in 41 years, the school finally announced a new, long-term contract Thursday that will make Smart among the highest compensated coaches in the nation.
Georgia will pay Smart $10.25 million in the first year of a new deal that runs through the 2031 season. That makes him the highest paid college football coach at a public university based on documents compiled by USA TODAY Sports.
The contract will have annual increases that increase to $12,250,000 for the 2031 season, making the total package worth $112,500,000 before bonuses. The total compensation amount is larger than any other coaching contract in college sports.”

41 years since their last NC. Wow. I guess it felt REALLY good. Dude looks like he’s in his 60s already. Hard to believe he’s 46.
He really is smart. I should have been a P5 head football coach!
Crazy they gave him a raise when it was lanning making all those DC decisions hahahahaha
