  1. Is there a team hotter than Oklahoma right now? Sooners finished in a 3-way tie for 2nd in the Big 12. Since the beginning of their conference tournament, they’ve lost only twice. Once each in their regional and SR.

Everyone is good when you get this deep in the postseason. Just goes to show that if a team gets hot at the right time and gets some confidence and swagger? They can ride it all the way to the title.

This is probably the most wide open CWS I can remember in a long time. Only 2 national seeds made it to Omaha (Stanford and Texas A&M) and both were in the losers bracket after their first game.

Pretty likely the SEC is going to get at least one team in the finals. Since Ole Miss and Arky face off in the winners bracket this evening. The Rebels were one of the last teams to get in and they are just as hot as OU.

Hopefully Stanford sends Auburn packing today. Stanford has played out of the losers bracket in both their regional and SR so they’re battle tested.

Stanford looks cooked. Down 6-2 now after jumping out to a 2-0 lead.

If I’m rooting for anyone left it’s gonna be Texas A&M. Only because of the Yeskie/Claunch connection.

    • Yeah it’s amazing how pedestrian Ole Miss’ and Arkansas’ lineups are….teams getting timely hitting and taking advantage of sloppy fielding and pitching. Lots of teams with house money and no pressure combined with luck and being opportunistic — very similar to ‘07 Beavs, as others have mentioned. As Whiskey mentioned above, this is anybody’s CWS!

      • Oklahoma and Ole Miss in the drivers seat after today. Elimination games tomorrow. Texas A&M/Notre Dame then Auburn and Arky in the nightcap.

  3. Crystal ball for Andre piper jr out of federal way. Looks like he could add 15 lbs but he’s well sought after. Let’s hope we get him!

    • That’s a losing strategy. Free is the only viable model. Google/youtube made everyone expect free as the base case. Donations and ads are the only viable options in the modern age. It’s not surprising legacy outlets are clinging to the old model. They probably have a “stuck in the past” mentality. I guess it’s viable to do free on most content, but go to a paid membership for premium – is that what they’re doing?

Somehow newspapers made it for a long time based purely on ads, the cost of printing and distribution had to be more expensive then digital distribution.

I do subscribe to NYT and LA Times for national news, and our local paper the GT, because I see value in what they provide. Can’t possibly afford to pay for info in every market and the O coverage is very limited on both local information and Beaver content, so I’ll continue to pass. But I do understand wanting/needing to get paid for content.

I had a customer going to put an ad in the print version of the GT 3×4 ad for one day, over $100, that’s just nuts. And who receives a hardcopy edition anymore?

        • Definitely need to get paid for content, but it has to be the ads/donation model. I mean they can try subscriptions but every year those numbers go down. People have been conditioned to “free” because of Google/YT.

      • What I noticed was a significant increase in the number of articles that were “subscribers only” compared to what it’s been for some time now.

Texas A&M eliminates Notre Dame. Aggies will play Oklahoma in the semifinals but will need to beat them twice.

  5. And then there were four. Arkansas eliminates Auburn 11-1…………….

    Semifinals are set.

Texas A&M/Oklahoma (A&M must win twice)
Arkansas/Ole Miss (Arkansas must win twice)

SECESPN must have a ginormous boner over another possible all SEC final.

  6. The best thing about the CWS this year is that seven of those fanbases will be severely disappointed. Jello-shot champions or not.

  7. Arky holds off Ole Miss 3-2. Rebels left the bases loaded in the last of the 9th.

They’ll play again tomorrow. Winner will face Oklahoma in the finals.

  8. I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed concerning baseball, but enjoyed playing a few years and watching the Beavers play.

I’d like to throw something out there for discussion that was brought to my attention when I traveled to the Scottsdale games this year.

I sat behind home plate up high in the stands by several scouts that were there.

The scouts came and went, and some were different every day, but all were very eager to talk about baseball and the recruiting process.

Something that caught my attention was their discussions about the differences in pitching approaches between the Pac12 and teams back east like SEC and Big12.

They explained that the eastern conferences usually had multiple pitchers throwing 96/97 mph and used power pitching to establish the fast ball as the primary pitch which made the secondary pitches more effective.

In contrast, the Pac12 teams did not have a lot of pitchers throwing these speeds so the breaking ball or off-speed was dominant and the fast ball more of a secondary pitch that pitchers would try to sneak in every so often to keep batters guessing.

I’ve never really paid much attention to this, but after that weekend in Scottsdale I did notice the Beavs and other Pac12 teams seem to rely on the breaking ball a lot, and that fastball speeds, with some exceptions, were on average slower than these power house teams back east.

If this observation is accurate and this trend continues, will this play a role in how deep the Beavers or other Pac12 teams can go in the end of year national tournament?

  9. Ole Miss shuts out Arky 2-0.

CWS finals are set. Oklahoma vs Ole Miss

Raise your hand if you had either team in the CWS finals, let alone the CWS.

    Crickets

  10. Baseball is strange sometimes. Ole Miss was in the #36 RPI range (Unranked D1 Baseball) before the NCAA Tourney started and Oklahoma was in the #31 RPI range (#22 D1 Baseball) before the NCAA Tourney started and both are playing in the final. So two borderline Top 30 teams playing for all the marbles. Can’t imagine this scenario in any other college sport. Goes to show, just get yourself into the tournament and anything can happen.

Got an interesting email about Canham this morning. Was given permission to paraphrase it but not share it. Anyone want the gist of it? You guys aren’t going to like it and will take out your rage via down votes and ad homiems, so let’s all prepare for that inevitable outcome now.

    • I don’t think anyone is claiming he is perfect or the next Pat Casey. Why wouldn’t we want to hear about it provided the info is reliable

Okay, basically his communication with players is poor, and it extends to the coaches…doesn’t listen well to their input. Has favorite players who get special treatment. Also, younger players and top recruits have been turned off because he’s bringing in too many Jucos.

These weren’t my criticisms at all, so this is new to me. But it explains the lack of chemistry I sensed.

      • “Had favorite players who get special treatment”. How to say Dernedde without saying Dernedde. That is the one decision I didn’t understand at all during the year. You arguably had a better or equivalent younger player on the bench and would not make a move. Same with running Fuchs out there without giving others more chances.

        • Yeah the guy said the favorites “should be obvious”…

I thought it was weird when our catcher and maybe best player transferred. Wonder what was up there.

        • Exactly. Those 2 for sure come to mind. Surprised about the JUCO comment…didn’t we typically go that route in recent years or is that truly a Mitch thing? Seems like pitching for sure has been juco ranks. Xfers or juco seem like part of doing business in this current landscape of college sports though so that issue would likely be a reality for most programs.

This sounds like the same stuff from all Parent’s of Baseball kids. My Son played baseball all the way from t-ball to High School and this kind of chatter was never ending. I talked to a couple of OSU Player’s Parents when I was at a game this year and they were kind of giving the same story. However, it’s usually coming from the 2nd string Parent’s kids. Or the kids who are in a slump. Ultimately, Coaches put in the kid’s who give the team the best chance to win. Dernedde isn’t a great hitter but he was the best infielder we had. Melton was literally “hit or miss”. He sometimes looked like he couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. However, he would also pull out a homer at the right time and was total speed in Centerfield. Now I can understand, some of these Parent’s have literally changed their lives to pursue their hopes of their Son playing Baseball. The one’s I talked to moved to Oregon to have their kid play at OSU. They want their kid to have his shot. But a team like OSU has 28 of the best high school short stops in the Country and each cannot play short stop. They have to be flexible and accepting to play the position that a Coach needs them. My Son played infield all his life (Catcher, 1st and 3rd). We were at an OSU baseball camp and the Coach asked him to play left field. I remember my Son looking up at me in the stands like “where is left field?” The kids (and Parents) have to put aside their ego and do what is best for the team. I think Nick Madrigal exemplified this perfectly. Nick was playing short stop early in the season. However, it was clear that Grenier was better at that position. Nick could have put up a stink about losing his spot and moving to 2nd but he accepted that it was best for the team. I’m sure Nick wanted to draw as much attention to the scouts as he could but moving to 2nd would limit that. Seeing players going to the transfer portal is more about the Kids and their Parent’s than the Coaching staff. Freshman are complaining about JuCo players because they have to face competition. If they aren’t ready to be on the field, they will only have to improve to help the entire team. Baseball really isn’t a team sport. It’s a sport with 9 individual players who are expected to play their position to the best of their abilities. The team aspect comes into play when you have to recognize that the best player is in at the time. Reminds me of the Simpson Softball tournament. Homer sat on the bench all day until the 9th inning. The Isotopes needed one run to win. Daryl Strawberry was up to bat with basses loaded. Daryl had hit 4 home runs on the day but Mr. Burns pulls him to put in Homer (lefty on lefty). Homer gets hit by pitch and wins the game for The Isotopes.

        • Good thoughts Elwood. There is always sour grapes about playing time even at D1 level. I have defended Mitch, but the Dernedde decision is a bridge too far for me. He batted .216 and had 59 Ks in 199 ABs. This is way beyond “not good”. Trotsky hit .288 on 59 ABs and had 1 error in 66 chances (.980). Dernedde had 13 errors on 255 chances (.940). I don’t think he was objectively our best infielder. Mitch is a big stats guy so I just do not get it. I realize these are college age kids so I am not going to be obnoxious about it, but Mitch was wrong here. And I am not sure why he would not correct the mistake when it became obvious.

Smilin’ Mike loses another big one as the Generals fall in the semi-finals to end their nine-game winning streak. I guess I shouldn’t be too harsh, I think he has a Grey Cup or two!

  13. Oklahoma implodes in the last of the 8th. A pair of wild pitches allows Ole Miss to take the lead and finish off the Sooners. Rebels dog pile in Omaha. SEC wins another CWS. Barf.

Did not realize Mark McGwire’s kid plays for OU.

    • Wild pitches, wild pitches.
Has anyone here analyzed the season long trend for Dorman’s staff?…….Seems WP/HBP/ and even bb became more of a problem as the season winded down. Dorman’s fault? Level of competition/pressure? Or just the way the ball bounces?

      • Just saw the highlights of the 9th. That first strikeout? Very Greg Streetish. Waaaaaay inside. Definitely not a strike.

Would it really have made a difference in the final outcome?

      • No idea. Just saw he was on the roster. I did not see if he played at all in the little of the CWS finals I did watch.

      • It seems like the recruits this year all seem to have other P5 offers than previous years. They already got a solid QB to build the class around now they just need to get some of those elusive quality DL. I feel like team could be pretty good with a difference maker on the DL. They need someone that can win 1on1 battles. I would put coach Legi on the hot seat if we dont see significant improvement. Bray’s defense might help this.

          • Is this Nyziah Hunter? The 3* you’re referring to? If so, he’s set to commit on the 30th but 24/7 has him 100% for Cal despite the Beavs being in top 3. Seems like choosing the Beavs would be a bit of a surprise but hopefully so!

          • Yeah, I assume that’s his preferred position but he’s listed as wr/db so wasn’t sure if they would give him options as they are still looking for DBs

          • No holding my breath as we don’t typically fare well with these school announcements. I realize the crystal balls are for OSU but his comments have me thinking Utah. I hope I’m wrong.

          • Any idea where we are potentially getting some better prospects? Maybe some kids don’t want to sit by a Ferrari and are looking for genuine coaching?

          • Great question. Maybe last season showed enough that this team could go places but I’m sure there’s better/other reasons. I think to some extent we were high on some of these types of recruits in prior years but something has changed where we’ve been making the top 5 or 3 more consistently.

          • It’s possible that in the age of hype and NIL the family-focused, blue collar narrative actually resonates more with certain types of recruits.

Beavers finish the Season ranked #10 by D1 Baseball, 1 below Tennessee. Our Pre Season composite ranking was #20. We saw some drop off in both defense and offensive output toward the end of the Season. I would argue our pitching improved, especially from the Bull Pen (with the exception of Carpenter). Overall, I’m encouraged with both Coach Canham and Dorman. Our Fan base has high expectations following the Casey era and I feel having our program finish in the Top 10 in the Country is a positive sign. We had some missed opportunities but each year brings different challenges. Go Beavs!!

Big 12 hires former head of Jay-Z’s agency as their new president. “I guess we’ll throw good concerts?” said one Big 12 AD.

  17. Huge extended weekend of football targets announcing their commitments coming up. We could know quite a bit about this defensive class by July 5th.

    6/30: Brady Nassar (Edge)
    7/1: Cayden Dawson (Edge)
    Kelze Howard (DL)
    7/4: Will Lee (Juco DB)

Andre Piper-Jordan (CB) hasn’t announced a commitment date, but has two Crystal Balls for Oregon State AFTER his official visit to Arizona.

  18. Angie Machado tweeted something about hearing of additional commitments coming down the pipe. Wonder if those are additional commits from the last public one or if there’s some unreported yet and these are in addition to that. Perhaps this is going to be a decent week for the Beavs?

    • I think nassar Dawson and Howard are 3 between today and tomorrow.

Be great to add piper-Jordan too.

Also the big dtackle from Texas seems likely but we have to wait until end of July apparently

Well at least for one more year! I blame Lincoln Riley as this had to be under consideration at USC prior to them courting him; had that not been the case, I doubt he would have bolted from Oklahoma as fast as he did. Wasn’t Oklahoma headed to the SEC? Just the mere talk about this, USC and UCLA leaving, and this news is breaking on all fronts now, will just help all the other PAC 12 schools start eye-balling the exits lest they be left out of consideration of some other conference. Look for Washington and Oregon to make an announcement soon doing the same thing. This is a sad day for PAC 12 fans everywhere – I love this conference and the rivalries/traditions that go back generations and through families. It truly is all about the benjamins – with everything; gotta make one more buck! What a fucking sad day!

This may be the end of the PAC-12. You can bet your ass UW and UO are looking to jump ship.

I don’t see any teams out there they could add to replace the LA market.

      • Well that is a nice thought, but our track record against the Mountain West hasn’t been all that stellar lately….I guess we could have the Mountain-Pacific Conference; it’s never be the PAC, though.

      • I posted that opinion here quite a few years ago and was blasted for it.

Not looking like such a bad idea now, is it?

  20. Regarding the Angels/Mariners brawl: Apparently more than Whiskey Soaked Napkins hates the Mariners. You can add Trout and Nevin into that club. This is a very entertaining breakdown. Jesse Winker is not one to mess with lol.

    https://youtu.be/QFUawXZhnlc

  21. I remember ten years ago talking about the early signs that it was the end of college football. People (of course) pushed back against that. Yet, here we are, with NIL, inherent recruiting advantages only getting worse, conferences falling apart, conferences merging for money, and ESPN exacerbating all issues. Now the end of a 100+ year old league. Great job, NCAA and ESPN. Some product.

  22. Will this strain that PAC/B1G/ACC alliance?

Does the PAC attempt to raid some of the remaining Big 12 teams to try and stay relevant?

      • I agree wholeheartedly with you on all of it, you might as well just have a high school draft and draft these kids just like the pros; you know it’s the next step.

      • Agree angry. I have enjoyed seeing the Beavs softball, wrestling, and some of the other teams go on historical runs. Pretty cool for a state school in Oregon. Been a fan before I knew all of the politics in sports. I just want to have a few good times tailgating each season!

  23. I guess my collection of PAC 10 and PAC 12 Athalon’s Annuals (dating back to ’82) will become collector’s items. See, there is s silver lining in every situation no matter how dire!

  24. Well if Oregon State moves to another conference I might be able to watch them on TV again without having to sell my soul to Spectrum. The song “its the end of the world as we know it” is floating through my head right now.

      • I checked into it once… don’t you have to get both blue and orange? It all sucks! ESPN, cable companies, streaming companies, networks, etc. are all in the train line for raping us.

      • 1
        1

Why? I use our Ukranian friends and pretty much watch most of the sporting events I want for free.

If you’ve got a computer, internet access and an HDMI cable to hook it up to your TV? You’re good to go.

  25. Looks like USC is just scared of the rise of Beaver athletics and UCLA is just the little brother following along…$$$$ wins another day in college sports.
Basic cash grab for those 2 schools but how does the amount of travel east help with the talent they still don’t keep in LA?
If the new commish can make lemonade out of this by poaching some Big12 schools before they poach more PAC12 schools then it may be ok but I don’t see a good ending for OSU in the long run. Mountain West isn’t going to help.
Sad day for all college sports, just like the day Texas and Oklahoma left for SEC. No loyalty only cash chasing school presidents with multibillion sports ties into alumni funding already. I wonder how the changes tax code plays into this from the school financial side of it.

  26. Hope the Pac can still exist after losing UW/UCLA/USC/UCLA and the Arizonas. Let oregon become an SEC team and travel across the country every other week. Pac should bring in UNLV/SDSU/BoiseSt/SJSU.
The playing field would be a little more level and most of those would be an improved road trip destination.

Bring in Montana and that school of the mines, too. They go for it on every 4th down. Let’s make it a real shit show!
Beavs could probably dominate that group. Then again, maybe not…

    • What does Stanford do? Cal? They have better academics and likely don’t want to trade down into a conference with significantly lower standards.

USC and UCLA haven’t been consistently competitive in PAC in years. There’s no guarantee at all they rise to the top of the BIG.

Its almost kind of humorous to watch this all fall apart.

Reser will be “complete” just in time for the end of the PAC. Ha!

The conference should extend invitations to Gonzaga and St. Mary’s, as well as BYU, Boise State, Fresno State, and SDSU. All of these schools are located in areas with growing TV markets.

It would also elevate the conference’s standing in basketball and perhaps persuade Arizona and Oregon to stay.

    • Do Gonzaga and St Mary’s play football? Basketball is irrelevant here. Football is the cash cow that drives the train.

    • SDSU is such a horrible university with no fan base at all. It would be embarrassing to have e them join the PAC__.

      • BYU has already accepted an invite to the Big 12. Can they renege on that?

TCU seems like a logical option as well. Gives you a footprint in the Dallas TV market.

I have little faith the PAC is going to do anything here to remain relevant. Saw a tweet along these lines earlier.

The B1G is televising press conferences and interviews about possible expansion. The PAC 12 network is showing womens volleyball reruns.

Tells you all you need to know.

        6/30/22 – RIP Pac 12 conference.

  28. Feinbaum says SEC & BIG10 will be the 2 super conferences. ACC tv contracts are through 2036, Big12/Pac12 have lost marquee teams and AAC isn’t respected by any of them.
So how many teams will the super conferences end up with? I’m guessing 24 each and teams will be more of an NFL model of west/Midwest/east etc divisions of 8 teams in each division then they can create there own playoff with division winners/and 2 wildcard teams.
Big10 now has 16, SEC is at 16 once Texas/Oklahoma arrive. That leaves 12 spots between all other conferences to grab and I bet ESPN is on the phone with several already orchestrating the whole thing.

Norte Dame will hold out until the ACC schools bail, which will leave only a few spots after Clemson, Miami, Florida St jump.
It will be a numbers game with billions at stake and many schools will be left in the wilderness of Mountain West and MAC football picking up the pieces.

At least there was the Fiesta Bowl win…

    • You can bet that when the dust settles, OSU and WSU will be left without a chair at the table. Small market teams. No one recruits either area for football prospects.

Many are clamoring for the remaining Big 12 and Pac-12 teams to just merge into one conference to try and remain relevant. This is the best possible scenario. Otherwise?

      Mountain West here we come.

The worst thing about all of this? The dream of ever playing in the Rose Bowl on New Years Day is no longer a long shot. It is officially dead.

      • Too bad we didn’t have a real shot at the Rose Bowl in the last year or so….one last chance for all the marbles and they aren’t even trying to recruit any DL guys who can stop the run

JS will be the GOAT if he gets them to the Rose Bowl this year.

        • Top rated guy on 2022 was an edge rusher. Also have a high three star from Texas in the 2022 class who’s a d lineman. Also in the running for some d line guys in the 2023 class. They have had a huge need for awhile and finally seem to be addressing it but seems it’s too late.

    • Where is TCU now? Might be good to have a team in Texas for recruiting? Lots of football played there.

The “conference of champions” is really going to be hurting.

How does PAC demotion in football affect OSU’s competitive sports teams: baseball, WBB, soccer, gymnastics (?). Aren’t they all subsidized by football revenue?

      • TCU is a current member of the Big 12. IMO, TCU and BYU make the most sense of teams for the Pac-12 to add. Dallas market and BYU’s national following (although not on par with Notre Dame but they still have a large alumni base). Houston would be another possibility but not sure what the dynamics of them getting out of the Big 12 would be.

Pac-12 could add UNLV and Nevada. Have the entire state of Nevada as a Pac fan base and it still would only be probably 1/3 of the LA market. That’s how big of a loss this is. You can add more than two teams to try and make up for the loss. But then conference revenue gets divided into smaller pieces of pie for everyone.

At this point I still think the best option for the rest of the Pac is to merge with the Big 12. Otherwise I can’t see the Pac keeping up with the Jones’s when the TV contract is up in a few years. At least in this scenario there is a larger geographical area/TV markets.

No one outside of the NW and Idaho want to watch Boise State and WSU in a conference game. And those games would be relegated to 7:30 pm start times for that reason.

In reality I can see Oregon and UW jumping ship and going elsewhere. ASU, Arizona, Colorado and possibly Utah joining them. Stanford would probably go the Independent route. Not idea what Cal would do. They really don’t seem to care about athletics anyways.

The best thing for Oregon State is to probably just slink off to the Mountain West with their tails between their legs. Does anyone think Oregon State can stay on a level playing field in the current landscape and going forward? At least in the Mountain West they’d probably be .500 or better most years. Same goes for WSU.

    • That’s pretty rich, the PAC 12 courting Boise State! At one time, they wanted to join and we sent them packing; their enrollment was too small, they weren’t a ‘land grant’ university, there were all sorts of excuses why we couldn’t let them join. The PAC 12 came off as if they were some exclusive club. And now, here we are where we would be damned grateful to have them. Before this all over, OSU and WSU will probably be playing in the Big Sky Conference!

  29. On the one hand, no way. I think Durant wants to win, but not be the face of the franchise. Doesn’t want to have to police the locker room. In some ways, I’m thinking he liked Golden State because it was all that, but felt he needed to “lead a team” to get the respect he wanted. Kyrie and Harden’s act wore thin quickly. Even though I think the advantage of having Kyrie as a teammate this year, is that people rarely talked about Durant.

The Pac-12 should just embrace its lot. Take a page from the Mountain West and continue to play out of conference games against Big 10, Big 12, ACC and SEC schools to retain whatever relevance it has left – but when you think about all the checks that have been signed and deals made thinking the next Pac12 deal would be big and know now each school will be luck to get just what they’re getting now – there will be red ink all over the conference. Losing UCLA and USC hoops and football – not to mention the TV market might cut the media value in half.

  31. Interesting perspective here that argues it will be more difficult for UCLA to jump to the Big 10 than most people think. Lots of culture war crap standing in the way.

USC’s departure seems less likely if they don’t have other west coast schools on board. Even if they do leave, UCLA staying would keep the LA media market inside the PAC-12 and could conceivably help “save” the conference.

So…maybe SJW’s will save Beaver football? Yay?

I was reading California has some mandate to reduce greenhouse gasses by state institutions. Joining a Midwest conference seems to be a big increase in carbon emissions. Reckon UCLA gonna get tied up in the courts from multiple avenues.

    • Yikes.

That was a good article. Seems like USC is a sure thing but I’d be surprised if UCLA can pull this off.

This all feels like the east coast powers gut punching Kliavkoff for not going along with the conference expansion plans.

Yay question mark? Having a policy that promotes and encourages basic equality for others should just be considered being a reasonable human, but I guess in these backward ass times it gets tagged with a label that’s supposed to have a negative connotation.

  32. I expect Big10 to keep poaching and try to create a “West” region of the other major markets:UW, Colorado, Utah, ASU, Oregon (Portland), Stanford.

They can create a true national footprint and seize all major western markets, destroy the PAC12 by effectively merging with the large market teams…then pursue Norte Dame based on longtime rivalries built into the schedule with PAC teams. They would have only a few more spots to fill but the super conference would be in place and the SEC will respond by destroying the ACC and poaching all additional southern large market deep pocket schools.

I expect additional announcements for other PAC schools departing in the next few weeks. Big10 tv contract is just around the corner and schools will want to be part of the pie when it is signed.

Not good for OSU. Sad that the original PAC8 have been divided…

Is it bad I am so apathetic to the changing landscape. Honestly I haven’t been a college football fan for like a decade. I go to a couple Beaver games, watch most on TV (not gonna cancel a camping trip on a nice fall weekend for a game), but have not watched a non-OSU game in close to a decade. It just is rarely if ever very compelling, the NFL product is way better. I’ve watched more gymnastics, basketball or baseball than football. I guess this is all to say I just dont have the desire to get worked up over this. I’ll probably go to a few games a year if tickets are reasonable and call it good at that.

Sad part it my parents have season tickets, they’ve been going 15+ years. In their tailgate group they got several people at 30+ years. With the big increase in price the entire tailgate group was seriously considering just giving up on games. They caved eventually but if the conference unravels and the university keeps squeezing long time fans I just don’t see how they are ever going to do better than a half full stadium. Imagine student fees and tax dollars will end up covering a lot of the non-donor portion of the bond.

    • I’ve not cared much about national college football since it became the Alabama show, but the fact that this basically means the end of OSU football hurts.

      • 5
        1

The Alabama show was basically the Disney/ESPN show. People should boycott those if they’re truly upset, and then write Disney and let them know why. The fact that nobody will do this is how they get away with it.

        • Championship game ratings have been basically flat since Alabama’s run started in ~2010 (minus the Nike-tOSU blip). I guess ESPN is happy with the SEC audience and doesn’t see any need to grow.

          • Pretty funny that the PAC-12 gets put down so much when the two highest rated championship games since 2000 featured PAC-12 teams versus non-SEC teams (Nike-tOSU and USC-Texas).

  34. 4

Eubanks back as a Blazer! Heck yeah, its gonna be fun having two OSU alums on my favorite NBA team. Now will the team compete is the next question. Should be a much better team defensively.

    • 2
      1

As much as I like Eubanks for being a Beaver with how much Nurk has struggled to stay healthy I really hope the Blazers sign another backup center and that Eubanks is 3rd string

      • 2
        2

I think a lot of people underestimate Eubanks. He was great starting for the Blazers last year, I don’t think a lot of people watched him because of how bad the blazers were. He’s a solid backup Center an Watford can fill in there too. I think a trade for another wing taller than 6′ 3″ is the most pressing need. Although, with the pieces they have now they can field a decent team. No championship but at least competitive.

  35. Funny that UW and Ducks are left at the altar by Big10 and told we don’t want you but we’ll take the LA schools. Humble pie for a couple of arrogant fan bases and programs.

Big10 has now lost the value of the Rose Bowl and has thrown in with ESPN/SEC going forward. A Faustian deal I’d say. BIg10 now gets to play Washington Generals for all time to the SEC as ESPN will script it all out like WWF.

    • I wouldn’t count UofO out of this trade to the Big10. Big10 wants Notre Dame and I would imagine one other team. UofO and Rob Mullens are the only Pac-12 School that hasn’t released an official statement. While Washington has released a statement.

  36. Several good radio interviews today on the PAC 12 situation with USC-UCLA bolting. The one on KIRO was especially revealing with what the PAC 12 ‘s plans are (or aren’t) for handling this. The featured interviewee was some drone from PAC 12 HQ (actually a Fresno State grad with no allegiance whatsoever to the conference, even went so far to compared the situation to when the WAC imploded and Fresno State was left hanging). He said that they kind of expect that Washington & Oregon will soon be gone as the Big 10 is just taking a ‘breather’ for the moment, but will probably be offered spots in the Conference after they see what Notre Dame is going to do. As for the rest of the remaining teams in the PAC 12, they may start talking to the Big 12 or Mountain West teams; I really got no sense there is a plan here. I just can’t imagine these guys got blind sided on this and have no answers. I clearly believe that Lincoln Riley accepted the job at USC on the premise that they would leave the conference – need to ‘showcase’ his amazing coaching abilities to a bigger audience I guess.

I’m pissed beyond words and disappointed. Larry Scott was a terrible commissioner and we are reaping the rewards for not firing his ass several years ago. I really believe that the PAC 12 will cease to exist in the not so distant future.

    • This was foreseeable. Its natural to be angry but really, college sports have been corrupt a long time. Now the greed is more transparent (NIL, tv deals for super conferences) and I think it feels disrespectful to “tradition,” but tradition always included corrupt recruiting and institutions and networks profiting off of “amateurs.”

Agree though that the PAC’s passivity and its inability to remain cohesive and relevant is disappointing.

It would take vision and strong, effective leadership to keep schools from bolting for more $$$ elsewhere, and PAC didn’t have it.

I suspect a school with the ego and history of a USC just can’t stand being left behind, even when they haven’t been meaningful in football or MBB in some time.

      • I don’t think you can compare those two. Howard is our highest HS defensive recruit ever, second highest service recruit ever (only behind the infamous Simi Kuli) and 8th all-time highest in school history since they started tracking recruiting about 20 years ago. Howard is 146 overall in the 247 composite. While I think MMD from last year’s class can be good, he was 452nd overall in 247 composite. I think that this is on par with when we landed Michael Phillip back in the day. Hopefully, Howard will have a better career than Phillip who was good but not great.

  37. 11
    1

Hey guys we got a 4 star defensive player today….anyone excited???? I know we won’t keep him until signing day but let’s enjoy it while we can!!! And yes Angry, he can play D Line at 6’4″ 250.

  38. It would be funny to see USC become a juggernaut and ruin the Big10 every year I guess.
It would take some big time recruiting and coaching but USC may be in the best situation since Carroll left.
Too bad they had to leave the PAC12 to do it.

This seems to be a conference president issue and likely has been brewing since Larry Scott blew the PAc12 network

  39. Ahman rand, enters xfer portal. Men’s basketball looking good. Lol. Has it ever happened in program history where we might not have anyone from the prior year left? Holy shit. I get that’s not entirely true, but dam, there’s like 3 guys left and he couldn’t get all the new guys to play cohesively last year with a returning nucleus so what’s that mean for this season? Is the pac12 or beavs men’s bb a bigger train wreck?

    • Didn’t WT as much as admit he screwed up with the players he brought in last year? Seems like he said he was going to focus more on the fit. Or some other coach speak.

      • Something along these lines: We want to get back to championship basketball at OSU. We’ll look at the tape and clean some things up. We’ll get bigger, faster stronger, and work on fundamentals everyday. Guys need to make maximum effort. It ultimately is on me to get these guys in a spot to be successful and I haven’t done that as a coaching staff and we are going to go back to the drawing board and re-examine everything. These great fans at Gill deserve better. Quiet part (I’m going to let go of some of my assistants and send all players packing until I have assurance from the AD that my job is still safe.)

    • Did you really want the majority of that team back? Not that I’m a huge WT fan, but I’m ready to see an entirely new team after last year.

      • Oh, don’t get me wrong, wasn’t much to bring back but with all this turnover we could be in a battle for the worst record yet again.

  40. Addition and subtraction?

Remember the Big 12 almost going away last year? That was heartless, yes. Now, consider a similar scenario if, say, the SEC wanted to make room for the likes of Clemson or Miami

Would it simply eject a couple of underperforming schools? Would the Big Ten consider doing the same if it had more prominent replacements lined up?

One conference official reminded me that schools commit to a conference, not the other way around.

So, out with Vanderbilt and Missouri, in with Clemson and Miami? Out with Indiana and Purdue, in with Oregon and Washington?

The Big East booted Temple in 2001 for underperformance. Kansas State was on the verge of dropping football — if the Big Eight didn’t drop it first — before Bill Snyder arrived in 1989.

It’s a longshot, but judging by the events of Thursday, the scenario is not out of the question.

    Rose Bowl-ed over

With USC and UCLA, not only is the Big Ten now in the Pacific Time Zone, it has teams that have played in 16 of the last 19 Rose Bowls. That raises the once-unthinkable prospect of the future of the Rose Bowl itself. USC and UCLA have represented the Pac-12 in a combined 46 of 108 Rose Bowls (43%).

If there is no Pac-12, there is no participant in the Rose Bowl. If there is a wounded, diminished Pac-12 that somehow lives on, does the Rose Bowl want to remain partners?

“They just destroyed the Rose Bowl, too, as a Pac-12 asset,” said one Pac-12 source.

    https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/usc-and-ucla-to-big-ten-whats-next-for-pac-12-notre-dame-acc-big-12-with-realignment-just-getting-started/

    • BIG allegedly told UW and UO that conference will “stand pat for now.”

Likely seeking others first: ND, Miami(?)…

  41. Per Clownzano tweet:
“Spoke to lawmakers in Washington and Oregon today. There’s a movement afoot to emphasize that the public and taxpayers do not want public Pac-12 universities split from each other.

The effort, if successful, would keep OSU-Oregon together and WSU-Washington together.”

      • Thanks OOB. Some of my favorite comments from the article:

Critique of former Commissioner Larry Scott:

“But the cleaving of the conference, and perhaps its eventual destruction, becomes Scott’s legacy.

Meanwhile, he pocketed close to $50 million in salary courtesy of the Pac-12 and is sipping wine overlooking a sunset somewhere.”

$50M?!? FFS. Despite allegedly needing and valuing money, the conferences and schools (dead money on coaches) sure are good at wasting it for perceived short term gains. What a colossal shit show.

“It’s worth noting that Cauce, the UW president, takes over as chair of the Pac-12 board today. Would she attempt to lead the reeling conference at the same time she oversees a clandestine campaign to leave it?” Great point. Let’s see UW’s response here ($).

“That’s yet another reason why Phil Knight is undoubtedly doing whatever he can to get the Ducks into the Big Ten. His dream of a national championship just got axed at the knees.” Ha!

“From our vantage point, it appeared Kliavkoff was caught off-guard by the thunderous development — as was everyone else in the conference.

Should Kliavkoff, whose tenure began July 1, 2021, have sniffed this out?”

  42. Fuchs, Dukart hit the portal, per Eggers.

And this, also from Eggers: “Wayne Tinkle on C/F Ahmad Rand moving into the transfer portal: “In talking with Ahmad about the future of our program, we mutually agreed it’s best that we part ways. He grew as a player the last year and a half; we thank him for the efforts and wish him the best.”

    https://twitter.com/kerryeggers

      1

I’m kind of surprised Dukart is transferring. He showed promise offensively towards the end of the season/post-season, but maybe Mitch favors Gretler? 3B could be a log jam next year, depending on how Guerra progresses and with incoming freshman Ely Kennel.

      • Dukart is a grad xfer I think so this might be him leaving for a few reasons…making way for the younger players but perhaps pursuing that furthering education.

  43. There’s one OSU program that might benefit from the Pac 12 loss of UCLA (primarily) and SC, and that’s baseball. Are top prospects from the LA area going to want to play in the college baseball wasteland known as the Big 10? “Man, that series this week at Rutgers sure looks attractive.” Not. 40 degree weather in April, with NO ONE in attendance. (I don’t honestly know if Rutgers has a baseball team but you get my point.) I think my argument holds even if a remnant Pac 12/10 doesn’t survive. OSU baseball has developed sufficient brand identity that it could not merely survive in a Gonzaga-hoops kind of way within the Mountain West or a Pacific Coast Conference redux, but maybe prosper by securing recruits that might have otherwise gone to UCLA and SC.

    • The signing seems a little odd to me because the Blazers are already guard-heavy, but GP-2 should get his money. Unbelievably, he’s pushing 30 years old already.

  44. Conference realignment makes no sense for any sport other than football. Wish football would break off and create a 65 team league of all the P5 schools. Of course the big boys would still want to cap it off at around 30 or 40 based on TV ratings.

    • 10

Time to reform WAC football, the Beavs could be the premier team, or the jokes about the Beavs belonging in the Big Sky from a couple of years back, might not be so ridiculous for much longer! Geez, D-1 college football sucks more and more each year.

      • 12
        7

D-1 college football sucks more and more each year.

Tried to warn people about this! Started with Disney buying ESPN, the Pac-12 expansion, and pay for play talk 10-20 years ago. Ended here. The entire time I was told I was overreacting, the sport was looking up, and we had to sell out for the money…lol. Don’t remember one person agreeing with me.

  45. The main reason this is so horrible for us is because the Pac-12’s disintegrating and being stripped for parts which means we’re headed for the Mountain West. It’s a death sentence for OSU sports.

If we had gotten lucky and the Pac-12 was the conference taking over everything, or even just able to fully merge with another conference, we wouldn’t need to be as depressed because OSU would at least be making a ton of money and in a big boy conference.

Btw seems like a pretty bad time to have an interim university president! Though Ed Ray was a big part of causing this problem.

  46. 6

Jason Gay has few choice observations in today’s Wall Street Journal about SC and UCLA joining the Big 10, more particularly, what it’s going to be like for fans of those schools. [I add some commentary in brackets.]

“I look forward to seeing their sun-tanned faces when they step off the plane in Madison and feel a blast of minus 11 howling off the isthmus. It will make a night game in Pullman seem like Bora Bora. [that’s a great line] I hope their athletic directors have baked in the cost of flannel underpants, heated benches, and Jagermeister. I hope they’re OK with 40,000 Midwest snowbirds packing into their stadiums and drinking all their beer. They ought to legalize Spotted Cow on tap. [take note, BeeG]

“I’ve heard supporters say ‘It’ll be like a Rose Bowl every week!’ but there’s a reason you don’t have a Rose Bowl every week and it’s the same reason you don’t eat fried Double Stuf Oreos for breakfast. Too much of a good idea is a bad idea, and the novelty will be tarnished within months.” [I firmly believe this will prove true.]

“Penn State joined three decades ago and I still think it’s weird. I have zero idea why Nebraska is in the Big Ten, and judging from their football performance, I don’t think they do, either. [Can anyone say Mike Riley?] Maryland and Rutgers are lacrosse academies–I’m not sure if they actually field football teams. Can someone please check?”

“The Big Ten is everything USC and UCLA fans love about college sports, except 60 degrees colder. It’s going to be different. It might be fun. If not, there’s always the beer.”

    • 13

Yeah nobody is going to travel for those games. Too far, too cold. It’s a losing situation for everyone, including USC and UCLA. Those teams have weak, fair-weather fanbases as-is. They might think they hit some eureka jackpot, but it’s fools gold and all short-term thinking.

      • …weak, fair-weather fanbases as-is.

Well said. Those two have pro-teams, the beach, Hollywood with which to compete. Besides, they’ve got an airport and plenty of nightlife and diversity………all the things our old pastry lover, Lindsay said we lacked in Corvallis……….no tears here!

  47. Great comments regarding the dramatic change of football weather for LA schools going east, and the fair weather fan bases. They will crow about how great they travel for the first year or so and then it we be silence and no traveling fan base which will only create more fall-out with players. I’d say Lincoln RIley has this group as his big chance to win the BIG10 and the National Championship right out of the gate in 2024 before he bounces to NFL and USC is left wondering what they signed up for as their fanbase starts to get frustrated over the lack of ability to travel to all away games. It certainly isn’t getting easier to fly anywhere.

I’d guess the same thing will be true for current BIG10 fans travelling to LA. Many will be somewhat fish out of water, some will view it as a once in a lifetime roady and others will just watch on tv and wait for the next year when LA comes to town. The tv dollars are driving it and nothing else really seems plausible for it being a good idea.

Rumors that UCLA may have a difficult time leaving Cal behind and jumping out of the Cal St system. Could be interesting if they get left behind and Big10 goes looking elsewhere for the extra team. I’m guessing that Notre Dame is asking a pretty steep price to even consider, and at this point Big10 may need to listen and consider how to pull them in, which would be another sad milestone in college football if Notre Dame was no longer independent.

    • So true:
“Fans don’t watch college football because it’s played at a higher caliber than the NFL. They watch because it’s more fun…In college, even the best teams have guys who will be bankers and gym teachers. And sometimes that leaves those great teams prone to upsets…

    • ‘For the most part, the only excitement for the Big Ten’s poaching of UCLA and USC is coming from the 16 schools that will benefit from the largesse.’

Whats the read in gopher land? Are alumni stoked about what the b1g has become? Aside form the financials, are they excited? What happens to football outliers like Indiana? How long are they allowed to stay?

  48. College football is officially dead. Unfortunately, Oregon State will be left behind due to the “haves” versus the “have nots” landscape of what is now college football. It is sad and unfortunate that we are caving to the all mighty dollar and driving a spear into what made the heart and integrity of college football. I might attend a few games each year, but I won’t give up every Saturday just to watch on TV. I’ve become even more apathetic towards college football. The positive is I’ll have more time for what truly matters in life, and spend more quality time with my family.

    • 16
      2

I’m still going to watch every Beav game. I used to watch every Beav game and every Pac game. Then it was every Beav game and every Duck game. So, now it’s just every Beav game. This has been a steady decline since 2010 for me when I first noticed how NCAA football was in decline. It does free up a lot of time for more fulfilling pursuits, so that’s a positive (and people say I’m negative!!!).

      • It’s hard to imagine if UDub and UofO left the PAC-12. My best friend is a Duck and my Oldest Son is a Husky (okay, please don’t judge me). Anyway, I/we try to go the Civil War and the OSU vs. Husky game each year. I can’t imagine going nearly as often if you substitute Boise State or a Texas Tech. Those games are some of my best memories with my friends and Family.

        • Yeah, something to be said for that. But if college football and basketball just become watered down minor leagues for the NBA and NFL, don’t people get bored with that? Who the fuck watches triple a baseball? Maybe if its your local team, but otherwise? No. No one that moves from toledo Ohio makes sure to watch a mudhen game from their new city.

Maybe the non super league college games still continue to have appeal for what they are…what college football used to be.

        • 17 year old kids don’t care as much as us 30-60 year olds. (Maybe older & younger, but ballpark)

As long as these guys get an opportunity I think that’s the main thing. Not going against ucla/usc isn’t gonna sway most players we recruit.

Now if the Pac-12 dissolves and Beavs have to go mountain west, there is gonna be reprocussions. That’s all a wait and see.

Honestly as a few days have passed, this could really be a big knock on ucla/usc- if the pack-10 plays it’s cards right. – we need the right person calling the shots right now and I know nothing about the new guy. Pac-10 partnering with the big12 “could” be a gold mine if it’s done right. And ucla/usc would be wanting back in after 2-5 years of playing Purdue and Maryland for paychecks

          • 3
            1

I just don’t think the “super conference” thing is the future of college football. And at some stage it will be known.

If they really want college football to be a semi pro league let them build a league of usc, alabama, Ohio state, lsu, Clemson, Notre dame, Texas, Michigan, Oklahoma, florida, Georgia and auburn. That’s it’s own league everyone else is “normal”. Who ever wins that wins the championship yay

  49. The travel will eventually wear ex-Pacs down. It isn’t just the air travel, but the bus trips, not getting back to LA until Sunday morning, losing a day of recovery. Everyone else in the league will make at most one trip to the west coast – UCLA and SC will make a minimum of three to the midwest, on top of the ND trip and/or a non-conference game. (I won’t talk about the interference with their education). The training staffs will have 13 new stadiums they will have to “learn.” And if the team decides to stay East when they have back to back roadies – they’ll have to come up with a place to practice.
There is something to be said about flying in on a Friday morning, going straight to the stadium for a walk-through, heading to the hotel for meetings and a meal, gameday then on the plane and home by midnight (unless its an after dark game, then you add three hours). The Big 10 probably added a couple of zeros to their media deal with Fox for adding two Nebraska-level, 7-5 to 8-4 teams on a good year.

  50. Just curious (and I guess it goes against the pursuit of the all-mighty dollar), but is there a way for legislators to stop this crap for state-funded universities?

  51. Big 12 sits at 14 with addition of Houston, BYU, CFU, Cincinnati. The PAC commish should be having the same take regarding the entire remaking groups not just letting 4 more depart.

If they add all 10 remaining PAC12 teams and Boise St/San Diego St it would be a comparable footprint of major markets and variety of internal scheduling to be close to the Big10 future model. Maybe TV deal would be commensurate.

Or OSU just folds there cards and heads to Mountain West and thrives for a few years until all sports collapse under the greed.

    • Boise State is a no-brainer at this point. Their financial power and brand are on par with several current PAC-12 schools in football.

After that, it gets a bit hazy who else should be added. SDSU is in a big market, but it’s not a financially strong program. BYU would be an obvious fit, but they’re already committed to the Big 12 (which is a bad fit for them, but they made their bed). UNLV is decent from a market and financial standpoint, but they’re not adding anything to your prestige in football. Colorado State is similar.

I think realistically, the only thing left to do is try to salvage a “western US” super conference with the remaining Big 12 and PAC schools. Every other situation leaves a few of the PAC schools behind as losers (including OSU).

      • Combining the Pac12 remainders and the Big12 to make the first big conference (although the weakest) is probably the best way to stop the hemorrhage at this point.

        • That would be ten (P12) teams added to fourteen (BIG12), a 24-team super conference. Would break down quite nicely for two 12-team divisions. Sounds too good to happen to the Beavs. Mountain West here we come!

          • Just seems like the only way to get out ahead of it. There’d be some shit football teams but it would add some basketball cred.

      • 1
        2

Boise State is a no brainer NOT. The Idaho market adds nothing. Go get SDSU, Fresno St, TCU, UNLV, Baylor, and Houston.

        • The cable era is dead, so local markets don’t necessarily matter as much as brand power. There’s definitely overlap between the two, but Boise State’s brand is pretty well known nationally, and their appeal goes beyond the Idaho market.

It’s also a financially stable program; they are the second highest G5 revenue generator in football behind UCF. Once you take out conference media deals, they probably generate more local revenue than several PAC-12 programs.

          • “Boise State’s brand is pretty well known nationally, and their appeal goes beyond the Idaho market.”
What is that well known nationally? The smurf turf? Christ playing on that every other year? Gross. But honestly is there empirical data on this? What is their appeal beyond Idaho? I know people from Idaho, aside from the red hats not sure who is outside Idaho that cares about that program.

          • Who cares?

The financial bubble that is college sports is going to collapse.

The conference might as well shield itself from the consequences of that bubble bursting by having teams that have strong local support. BSU and BYU are two such teams.

          • That won’t shield them from the consequences. The consequences will be overspending based on unrealistic revenue projections. That ship has already sailed for OSU.

          • “Who cares?
The financial bubble that is college sports is going to collapse.
The conference might as well shield itself from the consequences of that bubble bursting by having teams that have strong local support. BSU and BYU are two such teams.”

“That won’t shield them from the consequences. The consequences will be overspending based on unrealistic revenue projections. That ship has already sailed for OSU.”

Right. The arms race already passed OSU. Trying to keep up with the Joneses isn’t getting the beavs anywhere. Look at what Phil has invested in his semi pro team and how that still hasn’t secured them a ‘natty.’ It’s unfortunate that the ‘olympic’ sports will lose funding but the collapse of what college football has become doesn’t hurt my feelings.

          • Google Trends data shows Boise State is in line with UCLA, ahead of WSU, OSU and Colorado in search interest over the last 3 years. For comparison’s sake Nike and USC are way above those others. San Diego State and Colorado State are way below.

If you compare BSU, UCLA, WSU, and OSU side by side by state, BSU is the most searched across half the country. UCLA is a close second, WSU has 4 states, and OSU only wins Oregon.

BSU has had a EA Sports NCAA Football cover athlete, they have footage shown every year during bowl/playoff games due to their past high profile success, the smurf turf is ugly, but it’s well known. They have a national brand that’s competitive with much of the current PAC-12.

  52. Beavs pick up another commitment, this one a JC DB who had Iowa/Iowa St. offers out of HS as a WR, but was a non-qualifier.

  53. Man, the people leading the PAC-12 are terrible business people. How do you not see this massive change coming in the sport’s landscape and do something to adapt? They’ve basically just sat still for the last few years while the sport passes them by.

      • Thanks for the link! Pretty spot on and yet no one in position of making decisions seems to believe it would happen.

It is beginning to look like Beavs will be left out and headed to Mountain West after all. Maybe lemonade out of lemons and Beavs become a conference top dog.

        • Still not sure what what to think…but…Honestly, the further we get from the initial announcement, the more I feel like 2 super conferences with 40 semi pro teams and the remaining D1 teams in a college football league series would be better than where things currently are, and looked to be headed.

OSU was never going to be competitive with an Alabama, let the schools that want to spend obscene money on a college football coach and players waste their money. No one wants to watch semi pro leagues now, not sure what will change that for the semi pro “college” super leagues. What was the last AAA baseball game you watched? USFL? D league hoops? Why not just watch pro leagues?

And then there will be leagues of what we previously called college athletics. More akin to amateurs. Less bullshitery and maybe a more level playing field.

Was it a year ago or maybe two that there was heavy rumor that Texas, Oklahoma and maybe some other Big 12 schools were thinking hard about joining the P-12? Man, things have sure changed for the worse in Oregon State’s case.

  54. How can PAC12 brass be silent for an entire week after such a death blow? Where is the leadership and why aren’t they trying to hold the rest of the schools together to salvage some value out of LA schools leaving?
Where is the bullet point spin press release for what may be next for the conference?
New Commish is getting paid to lead and part of that should be publicity and communicating to the public what the heck they were/are thinking.
If 6 conference teams have already spoken with other conferences, that leaves only 4 that don’t know what to do: Cal, OSU, WSU and Stanford.
Of these Stanford may have future options due to their academic reputation and could land in a strong situation but who knows because no one is speaking.

Politicians will likely be the next grandstanding we see and little will come of it, or if they shut down any changes for UCLA, then who fills that spot: UW, Ducks, Stanford?

PAC12 brass us shafted it’s own schools with blinders on to reality of the changes coming and have been reactive rather than visionary, which is now having tremendous consequences.

    • While that out of the box visionary Larry Scott is looking more like a moron right now, as if that’s possible, his successor is looking just as inept. And where the fuck are the ADs?

        • Barnes did come out with a milquetoast response right after the announcement, pretty much what you’d expect, blah, blah, nothing, blah.

Just found an article regarding Barnes contract…
“New Oregon State athletic director Scott Barnes will sign a six-year contract with a base salary of $850,000, according to the memorandum of understanding obtained by The Oregonian/OregonLive via a public records request.

The agreement, which was signed by Barnes and OSU President Ed Ray on Dec. 22, “will be set forth in a formal employment contract with the University.”

Read Scott Barnes’ full memorandum of understanding (PDF)

The base salary will also include a 3 percent increase each year for cost of living. Additionally, the deal includes up to $125,000 in potential bonuses.

Those incentives can be obtained via athletic accomplishments such as bowl or NCAA Tournament appearances for football or men’s basketball ($15,000 each), Pac-12 titles ($10,000 for football, $5,000 for all other sports) and finishing in the top half of the conference in APR score ($5,000 per team), along with performance in areas like financial stability, long-term fundraising, facilities improvements and student-athlete programming.

Barnes will also receive and $25,000 signing bonus and $300,000 if he completes the contract.

The base salary is a significant increase from the $500,000 Todd Stansbury earned when he signed a five-year contract with OSU in June of 2015.

Barnes, who was introduced in Corvallis last week, will officially begin his OSU duties on Feb. 13 (2017)”

All for rejoining the Mountain West.

I could see the Pac 12 picking up BYU and then taking a flier on SDSU or UNLV. Not a great first step, but not a lot of options at this point. Also wonder if the Big 10 is dragging their feet on Oregon because Phil Knight is 84 and they wonder what is going to happen to the program after he’s gone.

      • True, but loyalty means nothing nowadays and they’ve wanted into the conference in the past. I remember their refusal to play on Sundays was always an issue. Probably would come down to Big 12 TV money vs Pac 12 money.

  56. And of the course the PAC comes out with a statement this morning:

“The Pac 12 Board of Directors met this morning and authorized the Conference to immediately begin negotiations for its next media rights agreement”

    Holy shit what a cluster.

      • The only justifications I can think of:
-they’re trying to stop the bleeding by showing a guaranteed $ number so teams have to choose between a known revenue number and the unknown in a different conference
-They think it will help them bring more to the table in a possible conference merger

If I’m a broadcaster, I hit them HARD with “why would I pay you $x when half your teams might be gone?”

  57. 1

New report says Big 12 considering adding “up to 6” PAC-12 schools, or just merging completely. Arizona and Mountain schools seem to be highest priority, but UW and Nike are also under consideration.

    • With all of the Big 12 expansion news, it’s hard to not think about Oregon St stuck with no other option except the Mountain West with Wazzu as it’s rival. I wonder if the Big 12 is looking to move quickly to try to “beat” this legislative stuff that seems to be picking up some steam in Washington and Oregon?

  58. FWIW, beat writer for Utah states on the Twitters:
“High-level Utah source tells @sltrib that a report over the weekend of Utah, CU, UA, ASU meeting w/Big 12 today is “blatantly false”

Furthermore, Utah remains in strong alignment with Pac-12 leadership, league insitutions.

“Tethered together” used to describe the suitauton””

Which probably mean some deal is already done.

The PAC-12 is excited to announce a return to its roots with the unveiling of its new branding as the “PAC-10.”

“We know it’s the history and tradition of college football that draws people to the sport, so we’ve decided to remind them of how great this conference used to be,” said PAC-10 Commissioner W.T.F. Cares from the poolside of his $25 Million summer home in Fiji.

Furthermore, the conference has announced that it has agreed in principle to a seven-year agreement on TV rights with emerging streaming service OnlyFans, as part of their push to diversify into other genres.

“OnlyFans draws a lot of eyeballs and PAC-10 football is truly about the fans, so we feel this is a perfect match,” said Commissioner Cares.

Terms of the deal were not made public, but sources have suggested it could be close to $1 million, with possible incentives bringing it close to double that at $2 million.

  59. Jason Gay had a follow up column in today’s Wall Street Journal that built on his essay from last week that I reported on above. It seems he got a lot of feedback, to wit: “. . . I’ve heard a lot from Trojans, Bruins and other Pac-12 alums over the past couple of days, alarmed by the leap, the travel and what it means for the many great athletes who don’t play football or basketball. The schools will argue that more money benefits everyone but walking away from tradition has its drawbacks. Have you ever talked to a Maryland basketball fan about the ACC?

  60. Unless the remaining Pac teams find a way to stick together or merge entirely with the Big 12? I know, duh…. This dance is over. Dennis Dodd shows what a partial realignment in a 16 team merger would look like. And it does not bode well for some schools……

“That hybrid conference might look better than anything one league could form by taking a couple teams from the other. And if the idea is get as close as possible in revenue to the SEC and Big Ten, it might be the best lineup.

Of course, it would also mean the following programs being left out in the cold: Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, Oregon State, Washington State, West Virginia.”

Personally, I do not see Notre Dame giving up their independence and joining the B1G.

    https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/college-football-realignment-news-notre-dame-on-deck-pac-12-big-12-could-merge-sec-vs-big-ten-playoff/

  61. One last thought for the night……………

If I am the Pac-10/12 and the Big 12 negotiating new a television contract agreement, why in the fuck would I want to get back into bed with ESPN/Disney or Fox??? Those two entities have almost single-handedly destroyed college football. ESPN/Disney more so.

Why make a deal with the devil? Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. What a shit show.

    • You’re right. The conference needs to decouple itself from ESPN/Disney.

Both conferences should be negotiating with CBS and NBC.

      • There are also non traditional media players looking to get into the market that have established footholds…AppleTv and Amazon anyone?

        • 1
          1

          Fubo, YouTube…

Something that has yet to be exploited are the television markets across the Pacific. The Australians, Chinese and Japanese love watching football. Sky Sports, maybe?

  62. So this Big Ten switch by UCLA/USC won’t work for the “lower revenue” sports like baseball, wrestling, gymnastics, etc….correct? I don’t see it working out with the travel expenses, time on road, logistics.
I am hopeful only Basketball and Football will get “realigned”, and baseball stays the way it is now.

      • Yeah it should be an all or nothing from a bureaucratic standpoint. But mostly thinking from a selfish standpoint of keeping Beav baseball relevant, with relevant opponents. I suppose Beav baseball can always do an out of conference slate with any of the ex-PAC teams going forward no matter how the chips fall. Very odd that the conference with the most championships in traditional college sports and all sports combined is at risk of extinction….overall pedigree means nothing nowadays….$$$$$

    • 11

No. If the P10 can somehow continue to exist, UCLA and USC should not be able to participate in P10 for other sports.

      • I agree, make them join some obscure leagues for the non-revenue sports. The SEC doesn’t sponsor men’s soccer so teams like Kentucky play in Conference USA. Hotel expenses will ad up with their baseball travel, but screw them!

        • 1
          1

But we know the PAC will be desperate to somehow stay connected so the LA schools will get to have their cake and eat it too.
It should be an all or none message from the PAC, no compromise regarding secondary/Olympic sports.
What happens when UCLA baseball loses those great pitchers to OSU and Stanford?
What happens when USC has to end several Olympic sports? Regrets or $$$ wins.

I agree that this will have far broader consequences for the rest of their sports and neither has been great in football for at least a decade anyway. The power brokers surrounding this move are delusional that USC will be able to compete weekly against the Big10 simply due to the travel load.

It strikes me that OSU’s only real advantage would be to argue that a conference with so many “great” teams likely needs to have a few “patsies” within the conference schedule so that it isn’t such a grind to go undefeated.

This is the only argument that helps pull OSU and WSU into any discussions, but USC understands how difficult those games actually have been for the last 20 years. BIG10 may not realize it.

          • Speaking of ‘patsies,’ the B1G has just added to their slate of easy wins with this move. And somehow boosted their prestige in the process.

    • He satirically predicts one super conference of evil, puts the Ducks on it, says it will be unwatchable and forgettable, and all down votes?

  63. More from the Wall Street Journal regarding football realignment. From today’s article by Laine Higgens [with my comments in brackets]:

“What happens to everyone else? It’s an especially pressing matter for the reeling remnants of the Pac-12”

“Since Thursday, 10 schools have informally reached out to Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warner, a person familiar with the matter said.” [probably not only Oregon and Washington but every remaining member of the Pac 12/10]

“There is pressure for the Pac-12 to move quickly. On Tuesday, the conference’s leadership authorized commissioner George Kliavkoff to begin negotiations with broadcast partners, an unusual move given that the Pac-12’s membership does not appear to be stable.”

“[Big 12 Commissioner] Bob Bowlsby approached the [Pac 12] conference about a potential merger in the wake of Texas and Oklahoma bolting for the SEC.” [Was this commonly known a year ago? I wonder if UCLA and SC had a particularly important role in squashing that idea? Everyone member of the conference would take that deal now.]

    • I read that PAC12 (USC ??) was particularly outspoken about the addition of UCF and Cincinnati at the time, as being too far east, not sure why WVU wasn’t an issue as well. BIG12 pushed back and the whole thing was shelved so BIG12 added the teams they preferred and PAC12 is on life support.

      • Idk about Cincinnati, but definitely UCF and BYU.

Utah does not want to be in the same conference at BYU. If the PAC had an opportunity to sway BYU from their agreement with joining the Big 12, guaranteed Utah would protest long and loud.

Now that aside, if the PAC wants to survive and remain viable? This may not be a popular opinion but…..

They need to get over themselves and their prejudices.

If only Tier 1 research and non denominational institutions are allowed? This conference will not survive.

BYU and TCU would absolutely good markets to add.

On the adjoining page to the article referenced above, is a review of the new book, “The Anxious Investor” by Scott Nations. In the current realignment circumstance, this paragraph jumped out at me.

“Humans are social animals, and when their peers are selling and newspapers are full of panicky headlines about financial collapse, it’s extremely difficult to resist. ‘Herding is particularly dangers on the downside of a bear market or stock market crash when the ability to think independently is simultaneously elusive and crucial,” Mr. Nations writes. The rational option, he says, is to be a contrarian during major market dislocations, even if most people prefer the comfort of the herd to making risky solo stands.”

Didnt have it in the first place. Will continue to watch via bootleg streams next season. Doesnt really solve anything but at least I wont be funneling money to them.
Then I’ll use the extra cash to take my family on that Disneyland trip they’ve been hoping for… ;)

    • It sounds like ESPN is involved with the ACC/PAC12 soft alliance negotiations to “preserve” both entities and gain some additional games for filling time slots. If I were Kliakoff I’d be very skeptical dealing with ESPN. Part of their ploy is to try to “rework” the grant of rights for ACC in order to allow for some flexibility in a new set-up.
Anyone with half a brain should see the PAC12 as the patsy being used in order to free up Clemson/Miami et al from their 8 figure grant of rights penalty so they can immediately bolt to the SEC. PAC12 will be left at the altar again and backstabbed by the remaining “Alliance” member for no benefit at all.

Again, the PAC12 should not be in talks with either Fox or ESPN at this point as they are both primarily interested in their superconference they have decided to back. PAC12 should be in conversation with BIG12 and CBS or Amazon/Youtube streaming services for a revolutionary type of revenue.

Kliakoff is a media guy and he must have some notion of these types of shenanigans. I hope he can pull a rabbit out of the hat at the last minute but it doesn’t look good so far.

      • The big 12 has been in turmoil since forever…realignment $ starting being thrown around. The PAC is now the big 12 v2.

A deal with ESPN just means P/AC/C on ESPN will still take a back seat to SEC coverage. Aside from kicking the can down the road, by throwing a half deflated pair of water wings, not sure how this keeps them from dissolving eventually.

      • Disney said they won’t be spinning off ESPN as previously planned, so we’re stuck with current management running it for the time being.

How long till players get fed up with these billion dollar plus TV contracts being split up amongst the schools but still no talk of pay to play, outside of NIL?
Schools make more and more each year. Players need to have a side hustle if they want a raise.

    • 4
      1

I guess the NFL exposure is still worth it to them. NIL seems like a bone they were thrown so the people at the top can plunder a bit longer.

        • And good for boosters – they can now take a tax deduction on payments to players. It is irrelevant that there is little to no legitimate business value being exchanged.

  66. Interesting article from Wilner says the PAC’s best financial option is probably to stay at 10. Any new team divides the pot more than they add to it. Apparently USC alone was about 30% of the conference’s media value.

  67. Talk about too early: Bet MGM sets the season win line for Beavs at 6.5 while ESPN’s “FPI” calls for a 4-8 season.
In treating the Beavs as Rodney Dangerfield; ESPN has wins vs only: Montana St, WA St, Colorado, and Cal. They do give the Beavs between 48 and 49.8% chance vs BSU, Fresno St, but only a 34% chance vs ASU? C’mon.

    • 3
      4

Hard to see the offense being better unless Nolan can figure out the deep ball. OL is likely to regress at least a little bit. Defense should be another marginal improvement. 5/6 wins seems realistic in our last season ever with a realistic shot at anything meaningful.

      • 1

Agreed. Plus throw in the decisions of Scratch Ticket Smith.

I would love to see another beatdown of the Trojans before they leave the conference. Unlikely with all of their transfers having preseason to get on the same page, but I can burn some genuine beaver-created cottonwood chips in homage to The Great Beaver in the Sky the morning of game day. Reser ought to be rockin’ w/25K on one side of the field…

  68. I just saw Chisom (the very talented inside backer) has 2 crystal balls for Beavs.

Smith and staff are recruiting at a level this year I haven’t seen before.

  69. Wilner has a mail bag session up, focused on the USC/UCLA move.
No surprise, he says, “Washington State and Oregon State are in serious trouble, with only two options: Remain in the reconfigured Pac-12, or lose their Power Five status.”

One question regarding a California law which forbids state funds being used to fund travel to, among others, Iowa,Indiana, and Ohio. Of course UCLA has a way around this, plenty of money available from other sources. Their athletes and staff will, however, “…receive education about the relevant California law, the law at issue in the destination state and given the choice to opt out of the travel with no risk of consequence.”
So, if ya want to punish a state that believes women’s bathrooms are for women and men’s are for men, then you can stay home in la la land with “no risk of consequence”.

    https://www.ksl.com/article/50436790/hotline-mailbag-wsu-and-osu-on-the-brink-why-oregon-got-left-behind-and-loads-more

  70. I remember years ago writing that it made no sense (from the rest of the conferences standpoint) to have OSU in conference sharing revenue when they don’t really contribute any. Said they should ditch OSU. I was told that would never happen because (a) they were an original team and (b) these teams had academic and cultural similarities that trumped money.

Need to find the post and comments. You guys remember this talk? Must have been 10 years ago during the expansion.

Here we are…the other teams finally realized it. People can blame Larry Scott all they want, and he was bad, but you know what’s worse? Years of losing, having your media support that because they want access to coaches over excellence, and not to rock the small town vibe. OSU is getting the results of everything the fans demanded and asked for. Not everyone here, but the fan base at large wanted and rigidly supported things that lead to this. OSU has OSU to blame. Now it’s see if the BIG12 lets us teet suck for a while, but my guess is they’ll see the same problem with us. My prediction is everyone but Washington state and osu join the big12. Only hope is Oregon demands we come along…
