Home Football Ranking the 2023 Recruiting Class

Ranking the 2023 Recruiting Class

615

Okay, as always, my ratings work like this: I break it down by star rating, and then within that group, I’ll rank them in order. So the second listed 3 star is my second favorite 3 star. Etc.

When I began going through this class, I thought Smith might have taken a quantum leap because every guy seemed to be ranked one star too low, but that changed around the Saez/Taylor range, and the class began to fade. But it’s still a really nice top heavy group who are probably ranked too low by the services.

Give me your thoughts on these guys. Put it in writing. Also let me know where you think I went wrong and why.

*****

Aidan Chiles – Smith did a great job addressing the QB problems in this class. Chiles is ranked as a 4-star, but that’s only because he signed with Oregon State. He’s a legit 5-star talent. Why? Well amazingly quick decision making, correct decision making, very good to excellent arm, viable runner, and great accuracy. Chiles had an amazing 73.4% completion percentage in high school, and a 38 to 5 TD to INT ratio his senior year. I’m the guy obsessed with QB efficiency, so of course I’m going to rank him a 5-star with those numbers. The guy is flat out legit.

Kelze Howard – Again, why only a 4-star? The OSU down bump. USC, Michigan, Oregon et al offers. Even better, on film he’s a complete monster. He looks like Lawrence Taylor just completely destroying the backfield. Sure, they are highlights, but you can see on film he has intensity and thrives off making those negative plays. Even the way he lines up. He is fidgeting just waiting to get to the QB. Total monster. Great in the run game on film, too. Complete player. Should play next year barring any setbacks or problems learning the defense, but physically, he is ready.

****

DJU – I only have him as a 4-star due to his performance vs some of the better defenses he’s faced, and maybe the mental aspect of his game isn’t completely refined yet. I think he might be a bit underrated as a runner. Really good runner and cutting ability for his size. Top 5 arm nationally. The Beavers should be able to have their QB throw the long ball and run on any given play, which is obviously huge. One yellow flag was his taunting on film, but given his comments on how he reached out to the staff, it quelled some of that. Shows maturity to be thinking about his future and best fit for his pro career. For me he’s a very high 4-star and possible dark horse Heisman candidate next year given that Smith is going to make him become mature (if he’s not already), and that Smith’s going to design the offense around his skill set rather than try to force the issue like Clemson seemed to do.

Montrel Hatten – Why is Hatten at 3-star at the recruiting sites? He’s at worst a 4-star, and maybe a 5-star. This is a clear NFL caliber player. He can get open with ease and make every catch, good speed, love how he cradles the ball into his body using hands. Looks like a taller Branden Cooks and even looks a bit like Jerry Rice. Come on. 3-star!?

***

Leonard Ah You – Mission guy who we might never see, but boy does he look very good. Fast, aggressive, finishes plays. I just can’t get excited because this guy playing at OSU is a long way’s off, if ever.

Tastean Reddicks – Solid all around player. He seems to make the plays he should and nothing more. I’d say he doesn’t stand out as excelling at any one skill but also doesn’t stand out as having any flaws in his game. I question the 6’1 height…he doesn’t look or play that tall (unless all the DBs he’s facing are tall).

Isaiah Chisom – To me he’s in between a linebacker and safety, but that opens some options to get creative. Could be used as a hybrid player. I like him most as a hard hitting safety (who clearly excels at the delayed blitz on film) if Smith is willing to make that conversion.

Cooper Jenson – Hard to find good film on him, and I don’t know where Smith will play him. TE would be best, but in his film he looks pretty good as a RB, too. Maybe he’ll be used as a Christian McCaffrey type player from the TE slot? Could be unique. His diverse skills make creativity an option here.

Jermod McCoy – This guy is underrated. He’s intense as a WR and has ball skills, and as a DB he’s a ball hawk with great awareness. I think his best chance to see the field is as a DB. Promising player. I think he’s equal to the guy below, Zack Card. Similar players, and that’s a good thing.

Zack Card – I really like this guy. Not the flashiest recruit, but I see a guy with a lot of heart. Someone who will make the tough catch or tackle (depending where he ultimately lands) and fire up the team. He plays with a chip on his shoulder, and it somehow shows on film. I love guys like this. They eventually become team captains and great leaders. He’s fairly rated as a mid-upper 3-star, but guys who play intense like this are always better than the sum of their parts and could outperform. The same goes for McCoy. Card reminds me of a faster Wayne Chrebet.

Zakaih Saez – Underrated. Really nice looking pass rusher. Pushes the defender into the backfield and collapses the pocket while maintaining an obsessive focus on the target – the QB. Great foundation to build on, and by his Sophomore or Junior year he should be in the rotation.

Nikko Taylor – I don’t know Smith’s plans for Taylor. Sticking at DE? Call me crazy, but I think Taylor would make a better safety than edge rusher. He doesn’t finish some of his plays, and he doesn’t seem to show the fire or intensity you want to see out of pass rushers. Meanwhile, he has a great frame and body type to be a physical safety. I see only productive depth here if he sticks at DE, not a starter or a game changer. Not bad to have productive depth, though, so he’ll be a useful player.

Andre Piper-Jordan Jr. – Looks like a depth player. I’m not saying he looks bad, but I’m not seeing anything elite that stands out. He does appear to like playing physical, so that’s a plus. I like him more as a CB than WR. That physicality could be nice in the secondary. At this point I see a guy who will provide depth most of his career and maybe start or play more key roles as an upperclassman. Solid depth, though. There’s nothing bad in his game just nothing special.

David Wells – There’s really nothing wrong with his game. All around solid looking player with good hands. Should be a very good special teams player at worst, but possibly work into the WR rotation. A guy like this is tough. Nothing stands out either way other than his solid hands, so maybe put him on punt returns/ST and let him work his way up.

Jacob Anderson – Needs to get a bit lower on blocks and use leverage. Seems like a good frame but a project.

Thomas Collins – Really hard to analyze Swedish football, but his frame, intensity, and form all look good. But when I see him dominating the line, it looks like the opponents are really small (and terrible) for O-linemen. Low 3-star but there’s a lot of variance with this guy.

**

Abraham Johnson – Seems a step slow, but I think he’s my favorite of the two stars guys. Might be able to beef up and be a slow, run stuffing DT who is in the rotation for depth.

Zander Esty – Not a huge fan of this guy. I hope I’m wrong. But he looks slow, un-athletic, and plays upright. He does serve a lot of pancakes, so there’s that…maybe he can grow into something, but right now I see a practice squad player.

Harlem Howard – Again, not seeing much here other than a practice squad player. Looks small and slings guys to the ground rather than tackles them. Poor form. Not a great frame to build upon. My hunch is he has a Champ Flemings type trajectory and wins up at a smaller, lower level school eventually.

Grant Starck – I’m not sure what the staff sees here. I don’t see it. I hope I’m wrong. I don’t even think this is a good depth/backup pick. There has to be a better use of this scholarship. But, if anyone can turn this guy into a player it’s coach M. My only hope is on that.

  1. On topic, every time I try to watch HS film it feels like I’m watching ant races or something, the quality is so low and usually taken from half a mile away I don’t know how you guys see anything noteworthy.

  2. 2
    1

Thanks for the breakdown. I’m not going to watch film on each guy and I will trust that JS knows what he is getting.
In his presser KSt week on NLI day he had at least 8 guys on campus in January and mentioned at least 6-7 who he expected to be contributing next year.

It is on Joe Beaver show podcast they replayed his Zoom meeting presser. He was very excited about the 4 receivers.

As long as the defense stays as good or even improves the Dline, Beavs are in great shape.

By the way, Hank from GMC is going to let me know how to get a press pass this coming year. Apparently the applications are only open around July. Maybe I’ll see you guys from the press box this coming season!

Thanks for these Angry. I always appreciate your eye for evaluation and player ratings.

You got these done a day early, you must be feeling better and excited about some of these recruits!

    Hope your melon is good.

Thanks, buddy. Feeling good. I’m stoked about the upper half of the class. Every guy before Saez could easily have a star added at the main recruiting sites and I doubt many people would argue. Their methodology is poor at best in limiting the number of each star.

  5. Howard absolutely destroyed against HS competition, often double or triple teamed and it didn’t matter, what a monster. Big jump between his JR and SR year film too, bodes well for continued improvement.

Agree him and Chiles would be 5-star rated if they’d signed elsewhere. DJU is a 4-star based on his struggle to find his game consistently at Clemson. Hoping to see a Luton like late development under JS and Lindgren.

  6. One suggested edit would be to put their position behind their name, with a primary and secondary “Andre Piper-Jordan Jr., WR/DB” if you think they project better to a different position.

  7. Starck was PFF’s #3 rated OT in the MWC this year. Did you just watch HS film?

Based on that, he should be able to come in and compete right away.

        • Three factors often lead to a quality player: Father was a coach, multi sport athlete, wrestler (especially linemen).
Starck didn’t wrestle as far as I can tell but he checks the other two boxes.

    • It is extremely rare for Lineman to be in a place in their development to be able to contribute right away as a teenager, especially on the outside. They need 2 years of training, nutrition, and proper coaching to get ready. It’s even hard to find them on dynasty mode in NCAA 14.

  8. I think you have Piper-Jordan and Collins underrated. Many recruiting experts really like Jordan as a CB. I think if Collins played in Cali competition he would be higher, but your right, tough to evaluate with the level of competition. You have Starck pretty low. He was all league at UNR and should be a battling Bloomfield for a starting job. Would also allow Fuaga to move inside.

    • Collins is impossible to evaluate. He dominates, but the opponents don’t look like US high school players. I thought my review of Jordan was fair. Will rewatch the tape tomorrow. What’s elite about his game? Nothing stood out.

      • 4
        1

Granted Nemac is a Duck honk and looks down on our program but he says of Piper-Jordan:

“I’ve seen Andre Piper-Jordan Jr. first hand and have him graded as a solid four-star prospect.

The 6-foot-1, 170-pound cornerback was the spring MVP of Ford Sports Performance, one of the nation’s top 7-on-7 teams, and has the combination of size and athleticism to develop into an all-conference performer at the collegiate level.”

  9. Smith said all we are speed guys with great route/catch skills and he didn’t really mince words about 2-3 competing right away.

He mentioned Collins, Nikko and Howard all competing for time on Dline right away.

Said the Nevada guy would be pushing to starter and add great depth.

He had a caveat about another group signing late signing period and they would be watching who was available as well as any others from high school ranks they might take.

Theme was “ always adding talent to compete at every position” so if everyone understands they aren’t being singled out (BG) but it is a good thing for the whole team and it is genuinely merit based, all should see it as a good thing to build talent/focus and depth at all positions.

  10. Nice review. I generally agree but would swap Piper-Jordan and Card. Plus move Starck up to lower Tier 3*. Physically he’s not the same player he was out of HS. Improved diet, strength, conditioning, and technique. He’s a a good depth guy at minimum and will likely start at guard IMO.

Agree with Bill that this D could be elite next year if we can stake a step forward on DL

  11. If anyone can find footage of Starck at Nevada I’ll take a look at that and reassess. I based my comments off the HS tape, which was really bad.

  12. 3

I think this is pretty spot on. My personal opinion 3 players I’d move up.

Chisom 4* – best linebacker I’ve seen Beavs land maybe ever
Thomas Collins 4*- level of comp is bad, but man he looks like a straight bad ass on film. Might take a year but I think he could be elite level
Piper- Jordan super high 3*- dude has all the tools, just needs more experience to show. I think he is going to be very good/nfl potential all over him

I’d bump down ah you from your rankings. All very good points and I feel like pretty dang spot on. Thanks for doing this

NP, do it every year. It would be interesting if someone went back and looked at my track record. I’m surprised none of my stalkers have done that yet. Or maybe they have, and they didn’t like the accuracy. ;)

      • 9
        2

I think you have a high rate of accuracy in evaluating players. Some misses occasionally and that’s to be expected, and seems to be more common with players who have less film (CB Nelson as an example). I think you overrated Gebbia as “almost flawless” and I think a 5*? The guy was smart, but I think telegraphed throws and threw too low, maybe over-striding on his throw to try and get more on the ball(?). Injuries lead to him getting an “incomplete” anyway. I read his hamstring was completely disconnected at one end, and it took him a long time to get back.

But what I notice is often on game day players you rated well in recruiting show up and are making plays. Lolohea comes to mind as an example.

I know you don’t spend as much time on this as you used to with other interests now but appreciate it. I trust your rankings more than the the recruiting sites.

I also appreciate NiceBeavers recruiting news and updates greatly.

          • 2
            6

I’m not sure Gebbia was a bad call the more I think about it. It seems like a bad call, and that was my first instinct. What do we really know about him, though? Right as he began to trend upward that loser Duck took him out.

He had flaws. A weakish arm and a lot of passes deflected, but he was a good leader and pretty good in the short passing game. I don’t think he’d ever overcome those deflations, which is obviously bad, but he was trending upward before the career ending injury. I don’t think we’ll ever know that counterfactual and what would have happened. Tough to say. He’d probably be “okay” but not great as I thought and hoped, so in that sense it was a bad call. But he was trending up, so who knows. Batted passed don’t show up on HS film, so you don’t know that until you see it.

People get on me, and I get on recruiting sites, but Smith is the guy ultimately saying these guys are all players. He probably misses more than anyone. Lol.

My evaluation/write up of Nolan was pretty fair, though I gave him one too many stars.

          • You may have missed it in the last thread, but I pulled up some of your rankings to try and see who might be contributing next year:

WR Jimmy Valsin – “Appears to be the Beavs answer to their undersized WR problem. Fast, agile, and cuts on a dime. Nice looking WR. Good win out of Texas. Only in-State offer was Houston, which is a bit of a concern, but this looks like a guy who has upside. I like what I see.”

Jack Velling (6’ 4”) – “Potential game-changing TE. Fluid runner with soft hands. Yale offer suggests high intelligence, so he should move up the depth chart fast.” Well recognized as a contributor already, but just looking back at the ranking.

TE Jake Overman (6’ 4”) — “Nice blocker and pass catcher. Very fluid and a motor. I can see this guy being a captain one day. That type of heart somehow shows on film. Hope he stays at TE because he looks elite there.” He should be on the field a bunch next year.

Specialist? Kord Shaw – “My hunch is he might be a Colletto replacement.” This will be interesting if true. It seems like Shaw has been getting big.

Some interesting D players we might see showing up in the stat sheet?

DL Omarion Fa’amoe – “Looks legit. And he has an LSU offer. When was the last time OSU beat LSU for a recruit? Good size, fast, and plays mean. Disruptive player.”

DL, Takari Hickle – “I think this guy is underrated. Fast, physical, and finishes plays.”

I hope to see these guys getting reps and making plays by the back third of the season at least…

          • 3
            4

The entire ranking system needs an overhaul. Something like “projected win shares” to take s concept from baseball. A guy like Colletto was probably a 2-star on every site (I have no idea if I even ranked him), but he was responsible for a handful of wins, and that is “5-star” ability no matter what it looks like or shows up as in the stat sheet. I might try to rework this next year with a concept like that in mind. Stars are very bad methodology.

          • Not sure how to include “football IQ” in rankings but Hammer’s IQ was off the charts. Applies to off/def/sptms.

Heard he was responsible for directing the SpTms plays that resulted in at least a couple blocked punts.

          • In 2020, Gebbia had a really good PFF rating before the injury. He had a low “big time throw” %,
but also an insanely low “turnover worthy play” % and he was pressured more often than our QB’s were in 2021 and 2022. Statistically, he was a near perfect game manager.

He definitely had something brewing before the injury.

      • I went back and did this at one point. You were marginally better than the 247 rankings, but not by a huge margin. I can’t imagine anyone projecting HS athletes onto “finished” college players with high accuracy, let alone just on the basis of highlight film. There are just too many variables.

  13. 8

Thanks for taking the time to evaluate the film. Always look forward to this annual post. I havent watched the films for hardly any players this year, but enjoy reading everybody’s critiques.
Came across a link to a Pac12 podcast where the topic is OSU with the DJU signing. Have listened to this “Field of12” podcast before on other episodes. They seem to do a good job of giving unbiased opinions. Will have to check this one out later tonight if our power ever comes back on

    https://twitter.com/TheFieldOf12/status/1607941169144537089?t=SLyG3igTmelzjDUQOE4E5Q&s=19

  14. OT:Bad football alert! OkSt qb Sanders has already entered the portal and not playing, Wisc fired Chryst, hired Fickell, Mertz has already transferred out and ESPN is covering it like the game means something. Strange that Fickell is on the sideline with headset and looking like he is running things. Must be a tumultuous month to be a Badger. And on top of that, Beth Mowins is on the call…I think I’ll tune out and not check back in.

  15. DJU sounds pretty mature and of good “team first” character in this piece:
    https://www.palmbeachpost.com/story/sports/college/football/2022/12/27/clemson-quarterback-cade-klubnik-replaces-d-j-uiagalelei-in-orange-bowl/69758046007/

“He said to just go be me and don’t be anything different,” Klubnik said of Uiagelelei,…”We thanked each other for everything we’ve been to each other,” Klubnik said. “He’s excited for me and I was excited for him…

    • Thanks for posting OOB! I don’t see any concerns with him especially with the culture of the team. It reminds me of the culture coach Whittingham created at Utah. He basically tells every new player that the team won’t adapt to them, and that they will need to adapt to the team culture. I’m sure Smith had a similar conversation. It’s taken years to get the Gary Andersen off the team, don’t think he wants one bad apple to ruin it.

  16. 4

Good Lord, Grayson McCall decides to play in Coastal Carolina’s meaningless bowl game despite being in the transfer portal. He then gets somersaulted on a first-quarter touchdown run and lands on his head in the endzone. Doesn’t return to the game, interim coach says he has an “upper-body injury”.

  17. OT: The Washington Post identifies DJU #1 as the biggest name to change teams so far:

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/12/28/college-football-transfer-portal/

References OSU “crushing FLA” in LV bowl.

Nice press for OSU in a major media market, and an indication of the media interest that will likely follow DJU to Corvallis.

Again, good problem to have if managed well. I think of the attention not only that DJU will get, but teammates. Martinez will likely benefit for example and get more recognition than he would otherwise…Colleto could have benefited greatly if he were here next season…

The stage is set for OSU to have all favor if it comes down to a beauty contest to get into the playoffs.

DJ U redemption story, superstar profile; OSU program on the rise and little engine that could narrative for lazy journalists.

    • It’s strange to witness increased media chatter about Beaver football on the basis of single player transferring.

This was something that I’d only see (rightly or wrongly) about Oregon.

Regardless, increased press, and favorable as well, is good like ppl have mentioned above and over the course of the last couple topics.

  18. An article i read said that ’21 bowl games averaged 4.7M viewers, including CFP.

This year’s OSU/FLA Vegas bowl drew 2.5M viewers, out drawing UCLA/Kentucky MBB (2M) and Celtics-Lakers (1.7M) that aired the same week.

I noted that DJU’s Twitter announcement that he committed to OSU had 1.7M views and counting. I imagine OSU FB twitter the last 3-5 years hasn’t had 1.7M views…

I know Smith will continue to emphasize team first and selflessness. And i expect DJU will buy in based on the articles OOB linked. But i do think OSU sports media needs to be planning for a lot more (good) work in ’23!

  19. OT: But if you received the latest copy of the Oregon Stater Magazine (title IV issue) the runner on the cover is Kathy Weston Kathy was a 1975 Pan Am games Gold Medalist, 1976 Olympian and anchor of the OSU’s 1979 National championship winning 4x800m relay team. (My mom is the other OSU runner). In my household growing up there wasn’t much talk of politics and the only strong political opinion I was aware my parents had was that was Jimmy Carter was the worst president in history because of his decision to withdraw from the 1980 Moscow games. This opinion was formed because it impacted many athletes, like Kathy, who missed the opportunity represented their country.

  20. If the Beavs can get find a Bosa or JJWatt on the roster to become a game wrecking pass rusher that demands a double team, would the defense be elite?

I’m wondering if that will be Lolohea or perhaps Howard.

  21. 14

I think the Beavs are contenders for WR Transfer Grant Dubose out of UNC Charlotte.
That may not sound like something to be excited about, but Dubose is really one of those under the radar guys that could make a difference at the P5 level.
Had almost zero recruiting interest out of HS, went to Miles college which had their season cancelled due to Covid. Ended up quitting school and working odd jobs until he convinced the HC at UNC Charlotte to bring him in. Ended up gaining 900 yards in 2021 and 800 in 2022, for a pretty bad UNC Charlotte team.
6’3″ 200 lbs with speed and also a strong body. He’s a guy I’ll be keeping an eye on.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PNzA3WUMrw

    https://247sports.com/Player/Grant-DuBose-46137692/

    • He would be an exciting addition to the wr room and sounds like a good attitude to keep after his dream as well as a very productive stat line.

Looks pretty comfortable on the inside slant routes.

    • 2
      1

I hear a story like that and think geez, why not reward the program that gave you your only shot and stick with them rather than just using them as a stepping stone. Call me old-fashioned.

        • I would hope former Beaver athletes are loyal to the school, athletic department, and Beaver Nation, not just whoever their coaching staff was at the time.

          • Free agency & NIL changed the tune of devotion or remaining loyal; fewer professional players have double-digit careers with a single team.

In fairness to the transfer, if the coaching staff changed and the incoming staff didn’t make an effort to keep him, there’s no reason to waste remaining playing time.

      • When it comes to FCS schools, they aren’t necessarily “stepping stone” universities like JUCO colleges generally are for kids. When the coach who brought you in had to be convinced to take you in and gets fired, question yourself in thinking if the next coach will appreciate your hard work. Also, what about their QB? What year was he in 2022? If a Senior, then ya, move on and see if a G5 or P5 school will give you a look and take you on in their program. Look at Chad Johnson and TJ Houschmenzadah(both transferred to OSU from JUCO/FCS schools).

    • He has the height we need at WR, is fast, and appears to have a chip on his shoulder. Only issue I see is DB’s are staying with him through his route running and is using his height and physicality to get the ball. Needs to work on his cuts out of his breaks in his routes to get separation. Another key I saw was his ability to adjust to the ball like Chad Johnson was known to do.

  22. 10

Watched some of the Clemson vs FSU on the ACC Network today. DJ has an incredible arm and is an imposing QB overall to say the least. The running lanes that the backs are going to have just because of DJ being on the field will take the running game to the next level. Smith is going get him to a place he didnt know he could get to.

    • It seems odd that Clemson was so bad on 3rd downs with him at qb. Maybe they just abandon the run and tried to make him a zone read qb or take shots downfield too much, easily predictable if that was the theory.
I agree with you. If JS and BL have the plan to make him be an actual qb as part of a TEAM offense instead of the do everything 5*, it will be delightful
      To watch.

I’m hoping for a storybook matchup in the playoffs between OSU and Clemson.

      • Their o-line was pretty crap.
Granted, the only non-Beav or non-Duck game I watched this year was Clemson @ SoCar, and they all seemed to play so slow.
Also, Florida looked extremely slow. It was the first thing I said, when watching the game on tape… to be followed quickly by Pat whatshisname talking about the speed of the SEC and whatever.
My eyes… Pat whatshisname’s words… did not jibe.

Hey Angry, looked back at some of your previous recruiting reports, nice trip down memory lane.
Also, you’re damn good. Pretty accurate.
This Collins kid could be overlooked. Simon Sandberg was rated 2 star by you, and while he won’t go down as a legendary Beav, he played a big role this season. Let’s all hope Collins can be as good, or better, and that it’s not a wasted scholarship. He may be the steal of the class right there.
Is there a Swedish pipeline I’m unaware of, are they the new Polynesians!?!?

    • 1
      1

Hard to blame him for the int, but later the throw into the turf to an open man is all on Nix, and something we’ve seen before.
      Go Heels!

    • 2006. 10-4 Matt Moore and Yvenson Bernard team that beat Missouri in the Sun Bowl.

Yucks finished 7-5 and got crushed by BYU in the Vegas Bowl.

In 2016 both finished 4-8 with the Beavs winning at home 34-24 with Marcus MacMaryion. Then GA brought in Luton.

  24. 4

Man I have criticized angry a ton. In his defense though he has rated the entire recruiting class every year and has been pretty damn good. That’s entirely different than picking and choosing certain players ratings that you don’t agree with.

NC coach kicks the fg to go up 6 and force Oregon to score a TD. I think that’s the right move, and I think smith would have gone for it on 4th. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

I’m not sure it would have mattered, the Quacks had the first down anyway with plenty of time and timeouts. Poor clock management by Mack, pissed away two timeouts earlier in the half and used his final timeout to set the defense, not to save clock.

I’ll now just have to read the Bo Nix leading the Quacks to the playoffs next year narrative. A loss would have suppressed that nonsense for a little while.

      • He still looked like running was bothering him today. Wonder if he has some lingering damage from that hit the UW safety put in his leg?

They replace most of their OLine next year. He wont have the same protection he got this season

Bowl season doesn’t agree with SEC too much so far. 1-3 if Ole Miss loses, and they likely lose Tenn, Miss St, Alabama games.
No Hooker for Tenn, no coach for Miss St, no Young possibly for Bama.

LSU should win, SC may beat ND with some focus, and Georgia probably repeats as national champ although I’d love to see a matchup with TCU.

    As for the PAC12:
2-1 so far, WSU lost, Beavs and Ducks have wins.

UCLA should win if DTR plays.
USC likely loses as a favorite because they are spoiled
    UW beats Texas
    Utah will beat Penn St

5-2 as a conference in bowl season would be an improvement, 6 teams finish top 25
Beavs should be close to top 10 by the end of it all.

The Heisman graphic Fox put up is pathetic. It’s become a QB award. It’s lost its allure for me and is no longer the coveted award. Give me the Paul Hornung, Lou Groza, Bednarik, etc over the QB with the best stats.

        • Since 2022, the award has gone to 17 QB’s and the other 5 were 4 RB and 1 WR. Ya, it’s basically the Davey O’Brien award and Maxwell award rolled into 1 at this point. Why don’t defensive players or TE’s get a chance a the award?

If the Beavs had Serna on the team, they would have beaten USC and UW without a doubt.

          • You can’t do that IF game over a kicker. Serna lost us the LSU game by the way. And IF we had Cam Newton from Auburn we wouldn’t have needed a kicker against UW or USC. I get your point that the Heisman always goes to QB’s but to say that the Groza is more valuable is crazy.

          • your the one who said it was more valuable…I just said it’s lost it’s allure, meaning lost its attractiveness. The value is still there because it’s the most coveted trophy of them all because of the rich history, but the history is changing to a QB trophy. The last defensive player to win the Heisman was 1997: Charles Woodson, Michigan, CB/PR and before him it was 1961: Ernie Davis, Syracuse, HB/LB/FB (Original Jack Hammer?) Before him was 1949: Leon Hart, Notre Dame, End. So I guess historically, it goes to HB, WR, QB.

Originally, “it was awarded by New York City’s Downtown Athletic Club beginning in 1935 to honor the top college football player east of the Mississippi River.” https://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/heisman-trophy-history-every-winner-1935

          • I’m talking about the guy who redeemed himself from that and was automatic AFTER that game and went on to win the Lou Groza award. 1 game doesn’t define a career.

      • Well that’s because QBs affect the game more than any other player. They touch the ball on every offensive play and now teams are becoming pass happy. That’s why you’re seeing this trend.

    • That’s so dumb. Sanders may very well succeed at Colorado but it’s not gonna be next year. Takes more than recruiting a bunch of skill players.

I will say you can see his impact already. Those annoying recruiting graphics kids put up on Twitter have a lot of Colorado showing up. We’ll see how many actually pick them over the big programs.

    • At the 0:34 mark, he blocks a guy from the 47 all the way down to the 17 yard line. lol reminded me of “The Blindside” movie about Michael Oher where he pushed the opponent all the way out of the back of the end zone and got a penalty for excessive blocking. Coach asked him, “Where were you taking him?” Oher responds, “Back to the bus coach!”

    • I noticed in one article about his transfer to OSU, DJU pointed out the commitment of a Nevada lineman as another example of the Beavers ongoing improvement.

  27. I guess IMG academy and their senior class would rank 13th in the nation in recruiting rankings. They have 2 5 stars 11 4 stars and 13 3 stars. Apparently they have guys that don’t start and are rated. Pretty crazy. Hopefully Smith can pluck some of those guys and develop a pipeline.

  28. The Cheezit bowl is pretty entertaining, but holy shit, Brent Venables is going to have an aneurysm. That dude yells at everybody…all the time. I know he’s a pretty successful coach, but I feel like his players perform just so they don’t get yelled at.

    • It might be the main reason he was a dc for 20 years. He knows his flaws and decided to cash out for a big payday at Oklahoma for as long as they keep him. Likely 2-3 more years if he can’t win 11 games.

    • I had a manager like that one time where his method was yell at every mistake and stay quiet with no real praises when I do something right. needless to say, it was effective to get me to be my best, but I was also stressed about making a mistake.

UW isn’t getting a fair shake from refs in Alamo Bowl. Just saw a sequence of questionable non calls all in favor of Texas, could’ve easily been 3 different 15 yd penalties.
It will be interesting to see what uW is made of this game. Texas is a challenging matchup for them.

  30. Mastermind Sark and his five star qb with three points. Why would Manning want to go there… well I can figure out a few reasons. Maybe Ewers will get beat out next year.

  31. OSU’s backfield will be five deep next season if no one transfers, each dude bringing something different to the table. I’m hoping Trey Lowe sticks around because he was the go-to guy on 3rd down in 2021.

    • Lowe has more reason to return than go.

Lowe, Austin, Oladapo all have to consider a potentially 9-11win season with greater exposure, and more scout attention.

The Beavers preseason ranking, stadium expansion, DJU, all going to bring more eyes to OSU.

A special bowl game is very possible.

      • He plays a scatback role and is great in the receiving game. If he stays healthy and has a good year he could be a 6th or 7th round pick.

  32. Talked to a guy who is familiar with St.John Bosco, nothing good to say about “Big Dave”.
He speculates that the divorce of his parents really impacted DJU.
On field celebrations notwithstanding, says DJU is actually a quiet kid. Even seems to wonder if he can become a team leader

Season tickets have become a more compelling purchase since JS.

Thoroughly enjoyable season this year, expect more of the same next year.

    • Watched some of thae U of W – Tejas game last night. What really jumped out at me was the number of players that the Dawgs had that trasnferred in from ‘somewhere else’; why even recruit anymore? Just find at least enough mercenaries to come in and play offense-defense for you and you are set. If you are a high schooler getting/accepting an offer, don’t expect that this will be the only school you will ever be playing for; it may be just the first of 2-3 schools. Sure, the transfer portal is exciting to watch, but it is messing with the dynamics of the traditional recruiting process.

    • It’s weird that the Pac is having to punch down in so many bowl games. Seems like they always have more Ws and are higher ranked than their opponent they’re matched up with.
Like OSU playing a 6-6 Florida. Were they really the best available SEC team in the bowl pecking order?
Oregon played an unranked UNC and UW played an 8-4 Texas squad.

      • And poor WSU played “up” to one of the best QBs and arguably hottest teams on the West coast in Fresno. Hasn’t FSU won like 9 straight games? They would be a hard fought game for any PAC team at this point.

      • 2

I think it has been a slow process of losing some of the bowl alliances with other conferences. This year the conference had 6 teams that were equally talented and in the race to win the conference, and it is showing in the bowl results. It hasn’t been a trend in the PAC12 for the last decade though.

Bowl matchups are generally set by ESPN for tv eyeballs anyway. If PAC12 keeps winning and becomes a better product, ESPN powers that be will find better matchups eventually, in spite of bowl tie-ins for conferences.

Imagine how much better team and individual stat lines would be for each team in the conference if each had 4 non conference patsies instead of 3. The 9 game conference schedule is a long term issue that should. be abandoned now that they have abandoned the divisions. Make the field level with SEC by adjusting the schedule and more teams will qualify each year for bowl games as well, and the end of year records will look better for the conference overall.

3 teams in the middle finishing at 8-5, 9-4, 8-5 always looks better than 7-6, 8-5, 7-6 based on less conference matchups and less conference losses. I hope the conference is considering this as they delay the 2023 schedule release. Or at least going into 2024, something should be in place to allow maximum opportunity to get 2 teams into the playoffs and it starts with fewer internal losses for the conference which leads to better overall records.

Gotta think USC will have no problem with Tulane. UCLA seems like the biggest risk for a bowl loss remaining. Haven’t heard if DTR is even playing?
Also, I’m so glad OSU didn’t land the Sun Bowl. Couldn’t imagine very many people choosing to travel to El Paso for New Years. What a terrible draw.

          • They’ve got to reorder the bowl selection and dates and redo the affiliations. Or start to rotate them so matchups become better.

LA Bowl and Vegas Bowl should be after Rose Bowl because they have the best stadiums and easiest locations to get to for all the PAC12 schools. Move the dates to after Christmas.

Alamo and Holiday Bowl next. Sun Bowl last.

Sun Bowl should get the Mountain West champs. LA bowl can get an ACC opponent instead.

          • I personally liked the pre-Christmas Vegas Bowl date. A little early compared to most bowl matchups, but it was nice to get the trip in and over with before the holidays hit and travel gets more dicey

    • Is December 4 the last poll? In that Coaches’ Poll, OSU #16 (UO#14), in AP OSU #17 (UO #15).

Does UO’s 1 point win over an unranked 8-4(?) team help them more than OSU’s beat down of an unranked, 6-6 FLA team?

Looks like OSU will wind up somewhere around 15-18 by the end of the playoffs?

I’m thinking in 2023 preseason, OSU will be around 15-20 with DJU & Chiles additions to the QB room, keeping OLine starters, keeping Martinez, RB depth, quality of defense.

      • 1

you’d think the head to head matchup of Oregon/Oregon State would be the deciding factor, considering records are equal and strength of schedule isn’t far apart.

        • Yeah, I’d think…but there’s the narrative of UO having been ranked so (too) high since pre-season and even after the 49-3 loss to Georgia.

I think UO may have one more “quality win?” Did they beat UCLA and Utah?

  33. If Oklahoma coach Venables was on the verge of a heart attack last night, Pitt coach Narduzzi is appolroaching a stroke in the 1st quarter. Based on lip reading he cusses worse than a sailor…

  34. Here’s a 25 min documentary on DJU. Its really well done and basically everyone raves about his maturity, attitude, work ethic, and just being a good person. He definitely doesn’t seem like a culture liability and it’s more the opposite. I think angry read a bit too much into some highlights. The only negative I can see is that he’s probably not going to be a vocal leader and do so more by example. Hopefully someone else on offense can fill that role like Gray or Levengoos as most the offense is young.

Something interesting i’ve noticed recently. Nick Rolovich has started following almost every coach on Oregon State’s staff. He follows quite a few other people too, but just odd that there are so many OSU coaches as of late. Wonder if Smith is considering bringing him in for some type of analyst role?

  36. I’m trying not to get to excited about next year because the last time I allowed myself to be this excited heading into off season was 2001 and that didn’t worked out well. I’d argue that the biggest piece missing from the 2000 team that was overlooked in the preseason was the DEs, grant and Jackson,

I know not everyone has announced, but what piece are we overlooking that could be next years achilles heel? Big assumption DJU fills the QB deficiency

    • 2
      1

On offense seems the biggest concerns would be WRs and QB. On defense, a lot depends on who returns but I’d say DL is always a concern along with DBs. That said, I’m not overly concerned about any position group. In 2001, I was not one of those that was super optimistic because I knew how important those players were that we lost following the Fiesta Bowl. We had some good skill players returning but the game is won in the trenches and we lost too much. That’s not the case next year IMO

    • 1
      1

I would say my major worry would be if our secondary takes a step back because of the players we have to replace, and our pass rush doesn’t improve, so our D gets exposed way more.

    • 1
      1

Let’s assume the worst since none of the guys eligible to return have made announcements.

Areas of concern at the moment is all on defense.

DBs – Losing top 4 DBs, Grant, Oladapo, Wright and Austin.
ILBs – Losing Speights and Fisher
DL – Losing Hodgins, Sandberg, Rawls, Anderson

Each spot does have young guys who can fill the void, but losing that many guys means more guys have to step up. Might be asking too much.

    • I don’t worry about the defense that much, particularly if Julian can come healthy. It was disappointing he couldn’t come back this season, and I wonder if he’ll be able to return. Julian and Cooper seem like heady players that diagnose and be in the right place at the right time to make plays. Throw in Skyler Thomas (6′ 2″) and Noble Thomas (5′ 11″) at CB…

Think back to the start of this season, Bray’s first full time DC. By the USC game, he and Blue had the secondary playing wonderfully. I think during the non-conference schedule they’ll sort it out and have them ready again. It would be great to have Oladapo and Austin in that mix though.

Angry susgests incoming JUCO DE Nikko Taylor as a Safety. He’s listed as 6’6″ and 245 lbs., that would be pretty cool to see him get time at safety and taking on RBs and TEs and blitzing, but I expect they’ll keep him at DE. USC had a freak of a 6’6″ athlete at LB, and with his wingspan he could influence plays.

In addition to those DLs from this season that return, I think we can expect to see Omarion Fa’amoe and Takari Hickle. Kelze Howard may be contributing by the back half or third of the season if not right away…he could play the last four and retain a redshirt. Lolohea will probably only get better with experience…LBs like Mascarenas-Arnold and Malaki-Donaldson may start showing up more. I suspect there’ll be better QB pressure to help out the secondary as Bray will be creative and will have had more control over player development.

A related question might be who is going to provide the leadership? I think Julian would. Maybe Cooper?

DJU will provide enough improved QB play to make a positive difference and help out the defense.

        • I’m not worried about the DL we are losing. As a group they played their role better than any group we’ve had recently but they weren’t difference maker individually and can be replaced now that recruiting and strength programs are in place.

The duo I was thinking about when I asked the question was Speights and Fischer. I haven’t seen has much chatter about replacing them but I think Fischer was a huge upgrade over Roberts. I know Roberts was a high end recruit but I was never impressed with him and thought speights and Fischer was a much effective duo.

          • I imagine it would go Mascarenas, Gordon, Miller, Chisom, or something like that. Chisom probably jumps Miller and maybe Gordon but Mascarenas has looked great when he’s played.

    • Yeah, lots of hype, Sports Illustrated pre-season #1 and ended up 5-6. Cesca missing a couple of key FG attempts didn’t help and kept them from bowl eligibility also. Chad and TJ were gone also, and DE was not able to really replace that talent either.

    • It’s fine to be excited about next season; it looks promising.

A potential achilles heel to that exciting season coming to fruition? Luck of da Beavs injury bug :3

In the team’s defense, its depth is better than in the past.

Not a weakness, but I’d like to see play improve in the middle of the defensive line. This with incoming potential from DE and LB? Yes!

    • They were very quick to talk about all the missing piece from SC. Appreciated Galloway and Palmer post game talking about all the piece ND was missing. Be prepared to hear about all Tennessee missing pieces

    • Pat McWhatshisname found joy talking about how the SEC was just so fast and too much for a redshirt frosh QB from the Pac 12 to handle… despite them looking really really really slow.
      Oh well.

  37. It’s still early but it does not appear that the new flavor of the month QB at Clemson is lighting the world on fire tonight in their bowl game.

    • After watching Clemsons offense, DJU is much better off being a Beav. They ask the qb to throw 45 times and run 15-20 times a game. It’s like they don’t mind a beat up qb because their oline is horrendous too.

I bet he will be shockingly good in a real pro style offense with less of the running and more ores so thinking.

    • I was just curious to see the guy who got DJ demoted, he’s good, but I’m not blown away. Has a weird penchant for running backward. I only like Clemson when they beat Alabama anyway.

    • One assessment of Clemson’s offensive performance:

      “Offense: C

The good news is that Clemson ran an Orange Bowl-record 101 offensive plays. The bad news is the most of them didn’t produce the desired result.

Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik looked like the freshman he is at times and didn’t get much help from his offensive line, which whiffed on several blocks that resulted in four sacks by the Tennessee defense and seven tackles for loss.

Klubnik wound up 30-of-54 for 320 yards and two interceptions. He also had a 4-yard touchdown run, but was under duress much of the night, including on his two interceptions in the waning minutes. The primary bright spot for the Tigers was wide receiver Joseph Ngata, who finally surfaced with a career-high eight receptions for 84 yards.”

      https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/clemson/2022/12/31/clemson-football-grades-tennessee-orange-bowl-dabo-swinney/69757710007/

“….senior defensive end K.J. Henry offered reflection and perspective.

“We had 11 great days and three bad ones,” Henry said. “But I wouldn’t trade anything for what I was a part of this year. It’s all about the relationships. I’ve been part of a lot of great teams here and this will go down as one of them.”

  38. Will be watching to see if any Clemson WRs hit the portal after this game. Good opportunity for some portal fishing.
Beaux Collins (injured and didnt play tonight) is one of the guys I could see being interested in a change of scenery. West coast guy who played HS ball with DJU at Bosco.

    • Joe Ngata is another possibility. Also a west coast guy. Only 1 year of eligibility remaining though. Just graduated from Clemson this month.
Both players had OSU offers out of HS

    • Ngata is built like a defensive end.
As an aside, my wife and I ran into the St. John Bosco team at a restaurant in SE Portland this fall when they were in town to play Central Catholic. We were absolutely convinced they were a college football team cuz of how huge they all were, until my wife asked one of their staff where they were from and I was able to piece things together.

      • And they beat CC 49-0. A family friend’s son is a sophomore QB at Catholic and he said the game was a joke. First time in program history that Catholic had a running clock used against them in a second half.

Geez, WBB committed 24 turnovers tonight. Seems like Rueck has lost the touch a little. He’s getting the highly-rated recruits but can’t get them to jell like he used to.

    • “I think we can still make improvements there, of just making sure that we’re really poised and composed in critical moments of the game,” Sarkisian explained.

      But not pre game apparently.

There ought to be a ranking for programs with the worst ratio of investment to performance. UT has so much money in football but have such a bad decision record and consequent on-field performance its pathetic they annually receive as much attention as they do.

    • Despite having advantages the average college football coach would kill for, Sark has produced an underwhelming 59-47 record. I don’t get what these AD’s are seeing. It’s not like he’s a good guy either!

      • Because he’s not a genuine guy nor is he a true leader. He is processing what would be a Saban reaction and calculates he needs to blow up on a tv guy for the team to get hyped up even more. Sark is a sad case in the Peter Principle. Promoted beyond his capabilities and needs to fake it to stay there.

Tennessee’s QB play last night was a preview of what DJU could be next year. Standing in the pocket and throwing rockets. Few if any designed runs. Quick enough to extend plays. 19-28 251 yards and 3 TDs. 11 runs for 5 yards.

ohiobeav is right, the Clemson offense asks for a lot of running by the QB. DJU had 142 carries this year. If he was in the PAC12 this year, he would have had the 8th most carries. DJU was the second leading rusher on his team. In comparison, Martinez had 161 carries and Fenwick had 114.

I’d think under Smith it would only be 4-5 carries a game (and mostly short yardage). 5 carries per game would be 65 rushes over 13 games. That total feels right for a QB.

I would say the opportunity for DJU to thrive is large.

    • Totally agree. I think with the tools around him and not having to do everything will allow him to show off his arm talent. I can still see him getting quite a bit of rush yards but more from scrambles when things break down than designed runs.

    • DJU is the same size as Jack Colletto. Maybe JS will save most of his carries for Colletto-type situations (but with a greater threat of the pass).

  40. Lol Iowa up on Kentucky 14-0 and the announcers are over explaining Kentucky qb Levis is opting for the draft, 2nd string has no experience but high hopes for Leary for next year.
Another SEC fraud program with a lot less depth than the myth says.
Hope Iowa continues to set season high scoring ice for themselves lol.

  41. Weird to see WBB in last place in the standings and Utah first. Civil War men’s hoops tonight, just hoping they perform respectably. This is not an elite Quack team by any means.

  42. DJU: “This is an offense that can prepare me for the NFL. It’s not about stats, that’s not what’s important, it’s development, and I know that’s what I can get from this coaching staff”.

This comment. This high profile athlete. If OSU does a complete turn around with him and he’s a name mentioned next year as a Heisman contender, I beleive that will be eye popping with a lot of young’s QBs and help our recruiting long term.

I also believe we have DJ for 2 years. Next years NFL draft will be so stacked at QB, he’s only a 1 and done if he has a year like Nix or Penix did this past year. I’d gladly take that.

These rankings make absolutely zero sense. Beavs beat 4 teams with at least 10 wins. Lose to Utah, UW and USC. Oregon somehow ranked ahead of UW and Beavs. UW ranked behind Oregon and Beavs which they beat plus beat ranked Texas team in Texas to win 11 games but are ranked behind Beavs and Ducks. USC is only ranked 15th. ND which lost Stanford and Marshal and barely beat Navy and Cal is ranked 16th ahead of Beavs and UW.

    • 3
      1

      Sorry but I just can’t help myself…

ND losses vs USC by 11. Beavs lost by 3.
ND loses to Stanford by 2, Beavs beat Stanford by 1.
ND beats Cal by 7. Beavs beat Cal by 28.
Beavs losses: UW (11 wins), Oregon (10 wins), USC (11 wins)
ND losses: USC, Marshall (9-4 weak schedule), Stanford (3-9).
ND ranked ahead of Beavs… wtf!
I’d say the Beavs should be ranked in top 15 based on logic so 17 isn’t totally unreasonable. They’re not a top 10 team. But…
      Alabama 2!
      Texas 7!
TCU only 10! Wft really… they might win it all.
UW only at 21! Aren’t they 11-2 and just beat No 7 Texas.
ND at 16… Beavs would destroy them.
Are these ranking a joke. This can’t be accurate. I’m guessing it was a mistake and they posted the wrong rankings.

  43. 2

Oregon State loses a close one at Oregon. Horrid scheduling for that game. Surprised the Beavs were able to make it a game without their bigs. Huge mismatch in the front court against Oregon.

    • Down 13 at the half, actually took a small lead, but could not sustain down the stretch as usual so far with this team. I will say the talent seems to be at a higher level this year, with some potential if Tinks can keep the team together. Eight freshmen.

    • Ducks are fairly average, so it was a winnable game, but coaching lost yet another one. Every single offensive possession the last 6-7 minutes just became hoping a player scores 1 on 1 while Oregon was getting rim runs, drop offs to big men for 2 and open threes. The defensive strategy late was about as bad as it gets. When they were fronting the post with zero help behind it, it was definitely a classic Wayne second half finish

  44. 14

Happy New Year, bums. Hoping 2023 is the year of the Beaver. I can’t remember a time I was already excited about football this far out from the season. Go Beavs!

        • I expect he will be introduced to the unwritten code and have a few oline chop blocks in his career after those types of antics. Celebrate but have some awareness for goodness sake.
A qb is vulnerable in his ribs and a defensive end is vulnerable in his knees.

I remember USC oline coaches taught their guys how to chop block and resulted in several injuries as a way of reducing aggressive pass rushes.

  45. Isaiah Hodgins with another TD today, that’s 4 in the last 5 games. Pretty well cemented himself as a player in the league and should get paid pretty well next contract.

  46. Who was it on this site that had a scholarship tracker link?
I wanted to bookmark it, or maybe we can link it to the main page. Will be a useful resource over the next few months as guys leave and some elect to stay that extra year. Curious how much room there is for transfers

  47. 3
    4

Alex Austin declares for the draft. Surprising, especially considering Oladapo’s announcement yesterday to stay. Austin is not at all NFL ready, in my opinion. I hope it works out for him. You just hate to see kids declare to early as they end up hurting themselves and their college team.

    • 3
      2

Yeah, I agree. He definitely was a solid tackler this year but out of anyone in the secondary he was the “weak” link. Lots of penalties, receptions, etc. Think he could make an NFL roster but personally thought he’d need another year. Wish him the best obviously and perhaps it’s a selfish motivation to want him to come back. Lol.

    • I’ll be honest, this stings, however if I had to choose between KO and Austin I’d prefer KO. Hopefully Speights returns, he’s a key piece IMO.

I wonder if JS picks up a transfer DB That can make an immediate impact.

      • I wouldn’t be surprised if Cooper Jr and Robinson were the 2 corners. KO, Thomas and Julian being the safeties and nickels. Felt Robinson played well in the bowl game. Also recall him having a really good fall camp the other year but then had the injury. Pretty sure Cooper Jr played some corner this year already.

        • Yep Robinson, Cooper, Julian and Oladapo “should” be really good still. I think skyler Thomas is the next dude that’s going to step up and look like an all Pac-12 player also

      • Speights was the most important player on defense in the run game. His gap discipline is why he has a shot at making an NFL roster.

      • Mascarenas and Miller would be ok and Jordan is waiting in the wings. We would miss Speights for sure, but there is talent behind him.

    • Smith really likes Chisom and has the size to play right away. I want Speights more for the leadership role and continuity.

It’s a huge week for Oregon State and the transfer portal. Wednesday, 1/4, will mark the start of “quiet period” where transfers can take in-person visits to a college campus. This will run through Sunday, 1/8, and is ONLY for transfers (still a dead period for high school players.)

Then, Monday, 1/9, will be the first day of winter term at OSU. So we want to see if DJU is on-campus and if any other transfers will enroll after visiting this coming week.

    Rule and recruiting calendar: https://twitter.com/wpialsportsnews/status/1596492423370530820?s=46&t=8S13ZNLxvwbe3VKp1EeA3g

    • If those scholarship numbers are correct, and Hodgins and Speights stick around, we’ll be at the 85 max.
Will be curious to see how these numbers play out.
From what I can tell, the biggest areas they’ve been focusing on for transfers are CB, DL and TE. CB makes sense, and DL would make sense, especially of Hodgins doesnt return. But curious why they’re looking at TE’s too.
There are likely to be a handful of more defections, just because there always are a few in the offseason. As it stands though, I dont know how much wiggle room they have to bring in January transfers unless they start out as walkons, knowing a spot will open later.

      • Makes me think they were waiting for the Austin announcement and now they will go hard after the 3x DBs they have offered.
Also, seems likely they will wait for Speights and then push hard for Mason Tufaga if Speights is gone.

  49. I met DJU’s dad at an event in Bellflower a couple years back. He was actually a nice and pleasant guy and a very proud dad. He had been dealing with college recruiters for years even before DJ got to Clemson. Both his sons had D1 offers starting in Jr High school. My sense in the short time we talked is he wanted the best environment for DJ and felt Clemson would be it. Don’t know what happened there to change things but hope DJ thrives on the Beavs and in the JS environment. Go Beavs!

  50. Glad we didnt play Miss State in our bowl. Cowbells are freaking obnoxious. Why are they allowed to use noise makers but other fanbases cant?
Next year can every beaver fan show up with air horns?

  51. Wow, the Tulane’s kickers name is giving Atticus Sappington a run for his money…..Valentino Ambrosio. Sound like a British Lord and Italian Count are doing battle! Plus Valentino just nailed his FG!

  52. Tulane’s running back Spears is damn good. Tulane’s defense gotta be exhausted. Trojans time of possession killing them.

      • OJ its whoever generates the most hype I guess. SC has got the hype machine running non stop so let them leave the conference. I say good riddence to them both. Love the term 5star mercenaries.

        • It’s fucking gross. The only thing missing in this current hype machine, a billboard in times square.

These dumb fucks just got whacked by a bunch of three stars at Utah, twice. They were 15 seconds from losing to little old osu.

          Tulane recruit rankings 2018-2021… 68, 90, 70, 81

Shouldnt the ‘best college football player’ with all 4&5 star roster around him be able to overcome a, greenwave?

    • There was still an idea that Beavs were a passing team before they realized they needed to just run the ball from all backs all the time.
USC can’t hold up against a run heavy offense, too soft and fluffy to endure it just like the ducks. They eventually take big risks to try and stop the damage which leads to even bigger gains by the fourth quarter.

Guess Alex Brink isn’t going anywhere soon…

  53. 15
    1

PAC12 should just give USC and UCLA the boot right now.
Schedule a ten team round robin instead of adding them into the conference schedules. They don’t want to be part of the conference anyway. Let them twist in the wind for a year trying to fill their schedules.

I know it won’t happen but it would be nice to see them feel a bit of consequence for abandoning the conference members.

    • Wouldn’t think this would be legally possible. I actually wouldn’t mind if they made the schedule as difficult as possible.

  54. 2
    1

Does this mean Beavs will jump USC and Utah in final rankings?

Top 15 PAc12 teams will be UW, OSU and NikeU in that order hopefully.

Lots to look forward to for next year. Beavs have already addressed their biggest weakness and have a proven system.

Utah may be as good if they get everyone back from injuries. If Rising leaves they will take a step back.

UW may have trouble without the oline returning. Penix likely doesn’t repeat what he did this year.

NikeU will have a tough time getting another year out of Nix like they did this year. New OC too makes me
    skeptical.

USC will add more 5 stars but they will still rely on Williams too much and not develop a run game. They were more balanced with Dye healthy.

Chipster can’t replace a qb overnight. They take a step back.

Coach Prime will have talent but not depth and it will catch them by end of the year.

    Stanford is in a rebuild.

    Cal is in a rebuild.

WSU has no coordinators and is a mess internally. Everyone has figured out Ward.

UA is on the rise but gonna be next
    Year.

ASU is a mess and in a rebuild.

    • Utah has done some pretty good beatdowns of UO and USC in recent years. I still see their D and physicality as the in-Conference standard. Overcome that D, and you can probably overcome others. I know matchups vary and are very important, and there’s no transitive property, but they still seem to be the team that can bring more physical D than other PAC teams.

    • Scary situation in MNF. Player may have lost his life. Big hit but not sure it was to the head…more like upper chest. He stood up after the tackle then just collapsed. CPR was being performed. Wonder if it is a heart issue? Prayers to D Hamlin of the Bills.

      • My son’s JV football team went through a similar situation this season. RB hit his head on the turf came off the field and collapsed. A lot of quick thinking and Life Flight saved his life. He is now fully recovered. Praying for the same outcome for Hamlin.

        • A kid on my son’s JV team had a neck injury that was pretty scary also. Had to bring the ambulance out on the field and everything. He ended up being OK but it was bad at the time.

      • I had it on in the background on mute and looked up and saw an ambulance on the field and thought that’s not good. Was going to go back and watch the play but decided I don’t need to possibly see a guy die for entertainment. Scary situation, hope he’s OK.

Yeah I did the same actually turned it off figured game was over for the nite…then made the mistake of looking through Twitter for an update later…ugh…canzano posted a clip that popped up on my feed. Can’t unsee it

      • Commotio cordis, apparently.
I’ve only ever seen it happen once, to a baseball player, and that outcome did not involve a defibrillator.

        • Thanks for the info Jack. I looked up commotio cordis (I had never heard of it) and apparently using a defibrillator right away helps increase survival rate exponentially.

“Experimental data gathered using the commotio cordis swine model suggest that defibrillation within 1 minute of ventricular fibrillation onset results in a 100% survival rate and that defibrillation after 2 minutes results in an 80% survival rate.”

    • They drop Beavs and can’t get the record correct, shows 10-4 at #17 on Yahoo sports. LOL basic research but the top notch coverage can’t even copy and paste the correct record for our Beavs.

  55. Welp, the transfer WR Grant Dubose, from UNC Charlotte, has withdrawn his name from the portal.
Seems odd, he was one of the top, if not the top current player at WR in the portal

    • Wyoming does an amazing job scouting every year. That’s a pretty good endorsement to me. Plus, JC guys seem to be getting overlooked with the portal hype in full swing now.

  56. As spotted by Wilner, Football Zebras dot com gives PAC12 officials some love for their handling of the Peach Bowl:
“This Pac-12 (crew) worked an exemplary game. Multiple close calls and crucial judgments, but each was handled efficiently and accurately.

Head line judge Darryl Johnson, specifically, had an outstanding performance. Sometimes as an official, everything comes your way, and tonight, Johnson was in that position. The two-time national championship H stepped up in each instance and should be proud of tonight’s game.

Overall, what a great game for the crew to finish their season on. Replay only intervened when necessary. The teams decided the outcome and the officials maintained order, and did what was best for the game.

  57. Angry, is it possible to link Scott’s scholarship tracker spreadsheet to the dashboard? I think it would make a useful resource to readers.

Also, Scott, are you sure both Sappington and Hayes are on scholarship? Seems crazy to have 2 kickers on scholarship at the same time.
And is Punter Dylan Black on scholarship currently? Was thinking he was a walkon, but I can’t verify that either.

  58. Walk on Connor Mehlovovich has entered the portal.
Also, thought this one was interesting. Gebbia has entered the portal?
Thought his eligibility was up, but he must have an extra year due to all of the injuries?

    2019 – Redshirt Soph
    2020 – Covid year
    2021 – Medical Hardship?
    2022 – Redshirt Junior

    Yeah, guess it checks out

    • This is bizarre I get it from an academic standpoint; he might want to get a degree somewhere other than OSU. If he truly isn’t 100% is anyone going to give him a football scholarship?

      • Definitely a medical hardship year.

Good for him, he graduated last year I think. So he’s just looking for somewhere to play. He deserves a chance to start somewhere

    • Must have gotten a medical hardship. He should sue Nike for tearing his hamstring off his bone in that pile during covid ball.

  59. 11

No spoilers, but have confirmed a commitment will be coming after this weekend. We also will have a handful of Juco/transfer guys in and out this week for visits, as Bill alluded to a few days ago.

  60. Gebbia reportedly hitting the portal. Guess he’s trying for a medical waiver and wants to play another year.

Don’t really blame the guy wanting to play another year and not have to beat out BG and DJU for the job. Truly was a case of what if he didn’t get injured in 2020 against the Ducks… Wish him all the best and hope he lands at a school he can play right away. May want to look at lower level schools like G5 or even FCS.

  61. Turns out the Clemson guy hitting the portal today will not be Collins. Not sure who it is instead, but I know who it isnt.
Doesnt mean Collins couldnt eventually hit the portal, but he’s not the rumored player from last night. Sorry Whatinthebluehell

  62. UW fans are watching the Michigan Harbaugh situation hesitantly. If Harbaugh leaves for an NFL job, they’re worried Deboer is on the short list of replacements. If Deboer does somehow end up at Michigan, I wonder if UW will come knocking at Smith’s door? Former UW OC and the other Pac12 coach of the year. No idea what Smith’s buyout is after his new deal, but UW has shown a willingness to pay big for their HC position in the past.

    • I do not see Coach Smith leaving his Alma Mater. He’s in his dream job. He knows how to sell Oregon State to recruits. Also, UW fan base didn’t like him as their OC. Also, we have seen that success at one school, doesn’t mean success at another one as a HC.

    • Now hear this: He ain’t done yet.

I think he wants a nationally relevant OSU bowl win. “The Convergence” occurring at OSU – defense, O Line, RBs, TE’s, arriving QB talent, home field advantage being established, Reser Rebuilt in ’23, fan support, increased media recognition – and the “big win” opportunity that is a product of all that, is too much to walk away from at this time.

The understandable counter and/or cynical argument is of course “Money talks.” But he’s been at Montlake and helped take them to the CFP.

I don’t even think DeBoer leaves for M just yet, unless he thinks the PAC is going to be markedly less relevant after ’24.

      • I feel like JS is probably the type that strongly favors and values his kids and the stability of their family/school/church experience much more than money, the stadium, fan support, or any media recognition. I also feel like one of the reasons he’s had such great continuity with his coaches is that he’s been particular in building a staff that have similar values. Same could be said about the kind of players he recruits.

He’s done the hard part in building the program up from nothing but now faces the challenge of maintaining that culture of success over a long period of time, many would argue that the latter is much more challenging to do. If they continue to raise the bar, he can leverage that for a new higher paying contract just like he did this year.

I can see him jumping to the NFL after all the kiddos are out of school, but it would surprise me a lot if he left for a traditional power rebuild or replacement.

    • Any speculation that Smith would leave anytime soon is ridiculous. He’s not leaving.

UW fans are insane if they are believing something that hasn’t happened or even will happen. Deboer has a very large buyout which I think will come back to bite them. Next year is the when they should be worried. If Penix has a big year, Deboer will be on everyone’s short list and he won’t have a QB ready to go the next year. bold prediction texas fires Sark next year and hires Deboer to coach Archie Manning.

  63. Note that UW, almost quietly given the USC and Ore hype, finishes the season with the best overall PAC win percentage and and a bowl victory.

Apparently their odd, 7 point loss @ ASU featured a pass-ricochet-off-the-helmet-pick 6, and a bunch if UW injuries.

If their D improves, they’re going to ve dangerous in ’23.

UW @ OSU in ’23 gonna be a fun one and could get a nice TV slot…and you know Smith wants that one. Course he wants them all…

    Aaron Rodgers was right.
Bills locker room experienced the controversy over the vaccine first hand with Cole Beasley getting suspended etc for his refusal. I think the Bills as a team understood what happened on the field.

Not sure how that guy can say there was no hit to the chest. I don’t think he’s ever taken a Physics course. The blow to the chest essentially stops his body from moving forward, but his head keeps traveling forward briefly. It’s possible he sustained a small amount of whiplash, but that’s a neck injury, that’s not head trauma. I’m not sure why it’s so hard for people to accept commotio cortis as the cause.

      • 1
        11

Maybe it is tough to accept because the first time anyone heard of it was Tuesday morning.

What I’ve read about commotion cortis is the impact velocity needs to be 40 mph- 200 mph directly at the heart region, but the physics of the football pads distribute any impact away from the chest area and that wasn’t a 40 mph impact on that tackle. He was met by the helmet of the runner but he was tackling from a side angle as well. It may have been a fluke accident but to silence and dismiss all other concerns and questions make me more suspicious it wasn’t just a fluke 1/200 million accident.

        • 6
          1

You may not have heard of it until Tuesday, but it’s certainly not new. It’s been diagnosed for hundreds of years. And it doesn’t require a 40-200 mph impact, thats bad info. It requires 50 joules of energy. To put that into perspective, a 190 lb guy traveling at 10 mph has 861 joules of kinetic energy. When the players collide, that kinetic energy is transmitted to their pads/bodies. It’s easily conceivable that 50 joules or more was transmitted through his pads to his chest.

        • 3
          2

I guarantee there are 1000s of medical diagnoses you’ve never heard of, unless you were a healthcare provider, and even then

It’s interesting how we’ve gone from:

“they’re falsely counting every death as a covid death to inflate the numbers”
    to
“every death is related to the covid vaccine”

  66. Anyone see how Chiles did in the UA AA game? I didn’t see him listed as a standout in any articles, but I can’t find stats anywhere.

  67. Now we have confirmation that Beaver football is truly the Force for Good holding back evil in the world. The season ends and everyone suddenly gets COVID brain.
