It’s hard to pick the Beavs in this one given the Cougs beat Wisconsin, but I’m sticking with the undefeated rage season until it doesn’t work. I’m going to assume the past few weeks of lackadaisical play is normal for tune up games, and now that conference play has begun the Beavs turn it on 100%. I’ll say this: I’m not as confident in the undefeated season after seeing flaws in DJU’s game and the overall lackadaisical play. What I do like is despite that uninspired play they’re getting pressure on the QB consistently and generally have had sound tackling and overall fundamentals. Things like that win tough road games.

26-24 Beavs. Gotta factor in Smith botching at least one extra point.

  1. First?
Wazzu beat Wiscy in Pullman this year, Madison was last year.
I’m concerned with DJ and heavy Wazzu pass rush.
Have the Beavs shown any screen plus yet? DJ is good with a quick slant but I don’t know if he can do it consistently. He does have some holes in his game.

How long does JS go if he struggles until Chiles gets a shot?
I’ll go Beavs in a tough one- Beavs 31-27

  2. The offensive playbook will start to open up now in conference play. Lindgren’s ability to set up and call big hitter players is an advantage for us. With DJ’s arm strength and the athleticism at WR with both Gould and Bolden, we have no shortage of weapons. WSU hasn’t played a run game like ours so we’ll be a new kind of test for them. Remember: our run game and defense won the game for us against WSU last year. BG had possibly his worst game and we still managed 24 points and a win.

I’m actually more concerned about the defense. We have one CB position that’s completely unsettled. We aren’t going anywhere until that hole gets filled.

    • Agree, secondary was suspect against sdsu(receivers dropped a bunch of balls). If cooper is out that will be another huge missing peice, as he might be the best nickel in Pac-12.

I got a bad feeling about this one- hope I’m wrong

      • 3

Agree on all of this. Secondary is in trouble, but the pressure might make up for some of that. I expect a mix. Some good blitzes to get to the QB, and when that doesn’t happen, the secondary gives up some big plays. I’m thinking we can get creative enough to make this work just barely.

      • There were a few drops and a couple overthrows (to wide open receivers) from SDSU that would’ve kept the game close had they been completed. We were really lucky to hold them to just 9 points and the secondary was mostly to blame. I’ll chalk this one up to having a couple players go down with injury and inexperienced players rotating in but they need to tighten up the pass D

    • I totally agree with your first 3 sentences but the big asterik is what we saw on Saturday vs. SDSU is the ability to run go routes and have our undersized receivers make plays. They can’t. Its like asking Deebo to go out at play 1v1 on the sideline. Not going to happen. I felt OSU was exploring this in the play calling vs. SDSU. I hope they learned it wont work in Conference play. Our receivers are Deebo like and have to get them the ball in space. I wish we had Colorado this week. The under routes would be able to march all the way down the field with our game. Oh well. Beavs win 30-23. Beavs take strip sack for TD to go up and hold.

  3. Watching some highlights from this years Cougs vs Wisconsin game.
Ball security looks like the biggest factor to me. Wisconsin turned it over twice to 0 for WSU.
    One pick and one strip/fumble.
I did notice that WSU defenders are pretty good at trying to strip the ball away as they’re tackling, so really hope the OSU coaches are preaching good ball security going into this game.
Ward looks more mature this year. Gotta make him uncomfortable. Once he’s scrambling around, he seems prone to make an ill advised throw when he should throw it away.

Should be a tougher game than I ever imagined going into the season. Dickert seems to be just the type of coach they needed up in Pullman. Hard not to like what he’s doing.

  4. Looks like all the sportsbooks opened with Beavs as a -2.5 fav. That should get a bunch of action on WSU to move the spread toward even by gameday.

SJSU and SDSU open as underdogs at home in their games this weekend so maybe they weren’t decent tests.

Oregon opens as a 21 point fav after Hunter goes out with a serious injury.
Utah opens as a -4.5 fav over UCLA

If DJ plays like he did this past weekend, we lose this game. You can get away with that versus SDSU and other lower level teams, but not in the PAC-12. Not this year. Simple as.

  6. Question: Have your expectation changed after 3 games and if so, is OSU worse than you hoped or is the conference stronger than you expected? I think it is a little of both. I’m thinking 8-9 wins is a more realistic, where I thought 10-2 was reasonable and undefeated wasn’t pie in the sky before the start of the season.

    • Interesting question. While I do think the ceiling is quite high, P12 is definitely tougher than it seemed going into the season. A few of the “layups” don’t seem to be easy games anymore. Injuries might determine this more than anything. Haven’t seen much of a WR rotation and if the secondary loses another body, it could be ugly. Already without Thomas, hopefully Cooper Jr doesn’t miss significant time, etc. That’s the concerning piece I think, especially with the awesome qb’s this conference has. If we’re bringing our 2nd and 3rd strong guys out vs UW, Colorado, etc it could be rough.

I suspect DJ won’t provide the consistent, higher level of play that I was at expecting. That said, I think he’s still going to be a net improvement over Gulbranson and the Beavers D tends to respond well to the occasional TO.

Oddly, Gould and Bolden don’t seem to be the ones he connects with so far. Is it possible that Noga (6′ 2″) Munyagi (6′ 2″) and Walker (6′ 2″) are going to be more consistent receivers with DJ? Not a lot of targets yet to judge, and as secondary receivers they may be benefiting from Bolden’s and Gould’s speed and maybe not drawing the better DBs in coverage(?).

I think WSU is still winnable if Martinez can play at full speed. If he’s limited, I’ll be concerned.

Also, I wonder if there is going to be any show of “solidarity” by the PAC 2 before the game?

    • He’s already providing a much higher level than Ben. Gulbranson doesn’t make half the throws DJ is making, and they aren’t for chunks, when the plays that are the same are compared.

We now have a qb who can see and deliver within seconds. And he’s able to throw to a spot. Sometimes that spot is a safe throw. Sometimes it’s tight. He’s not quite in synch with Gould and Bolden, just yet. But the balls and routes on timing plays are looking more crisp.

I think the second INT was a result of an overthrow he had on a post, earlier. He took a lot off that ball, but Bolden accelerated through the cut, this time, and he had to slow down for the pass… allowing the db to move over him.

There was also the weird play on our end where he turned to hand the ball off, then looked like he was going to pitch it, then turned and threw a quick out to Velling, when he saw he was just on the wrong page.

All in all, mistakes need to be cleaned up, of course. But that we make them and still dominate is a strange feeling. I was never nervous about the outcome.

The D-line rotation is also impressive, and Mascarenes-Arnold is just a big cat out there.

    • Walker needs more PT. Only recorded 8 snaps against SDSU but had a 24 yard reception. Hopefully they are just waiting to break him out for scouting purposes and to get other guys more reps before pac play

    • Someone, either WR or TE, needs to blossom into the one who can consistently stretch the field for us. That will open options for passing attack.

  8. So it sounds like the new media deal was also going to be to vote on including SDSU and SMU as new members of the Pac 12…then UO and UW went to B10. Ross Dellinger with an article detailing the SMU moves to get to P5. Haven’t been able to read the article so not sure if it expands on the math but i can see where the Apple offer being lower for the 10 teams than the prior media deal and then having to cut in 2 more onto that figure might have also turned the tide for teams to leave. Expanding would’ve been nice but that also cuts into the already smaller pool of money than before.

    • And then came the latest blow. On Aug. 4, Pac-12 presidents were scheduled to meet on an early morning call to agree to a streaming-only media deal with Apple, as well as add two schools: San Diego State and SMU.

“Armstrong, attending an SMU football camp practice that day, celebrated when reports surfaced that morning of the meeting. Flashing his phone to supporters and staff members around him, the Mustangs’ practice turned into a jubilant celebration.
Two hours later, the 108-year-old Pac-12 conference crumbled when Washington and Oregon left for the Big Ten.
Miller’s phone buzzed with a text message that afternoon. It was from the Pac-12 commissioner.
“You can’t imagine how close we were to signing the grant of rights,” Kliavkoff wrote to him. “You guys were our first call.””

Thinking about Coug matchup. Easy to say this comes down to DJU but I’m going to put this on the game plan/coaches. I think the SDSU game is a blessing because it shows the coaches that we can’t put this on DJUs shoulders. Revert to same formula that worked last year.

D needs to prevent big plays and get a couple turnovers. I’d play bend don’t break with DBs playing off WRs to force short passes with the occasional blitz. I think WSU will struggle vs our D in red zone but accumulate a lot of yards. Cougs will probably score in low 20s.

Offensively, we need to commit to run. 60-40 split with occasional play action. Protect the ball and control the clock.

My biggest concern is our punting game. Every time we punt it seems a disaster waiting to happen. I’d go for it almost every time from midfield in unless we’re in FG range.

Key to game is limiting TOs and special teams.

Prediction – Beavs 31, Cougs 23. That said, if we don’t have the right game plan (DJU struggles), I could see the Cougs jumping to a big halftime lead (say 21-3). If so, Chiles starts second half and leads Beavs to 31-27 win. Either way, my orange colored glasses just can’t envision a scenario where we don’t find a way to win. This game is as important as it get. Absolute must win.

        • He threw for 300 yards and basically three TDs… on 13 completions (15, if we’re counting his and Gray’s TDs as “basically”).

There was almost no underneath game.

That will not be the case, always.

        • DJs miss is the overthrow, but I think the play calling and personnel choices haven’t done him any good. The first int last week was not a great throw, but to a 6’+ receiver it’s a completed ball. The second int we only sent out two receivers, both tiny and draped by DBs. DJ needs to protect the ball but when the play calling is asking him to throw the deep ball to someone who’s 5’7 and covered that’s a tough ask for any qb. I’m not a huge fan of bolden running deep routes like that as the primary target

      • From what I understand, the sentiment is that Chiles is that good. He’s not your average frosh QB. Kind of like quiz wasn’t your average frosh RB. It’s up to DJU to hold the spot. My hope is that he plays well but mark my words, the coaches will make a change if DJU continues to struggle.

      • The good news for DJ and the staff is the Beavs defense is pretty good (thank you Bray) so the leash can be a little longer. Not that competition has been stout but so far, I haven’t worried at all that another team would score more than the Beavs simply because the defense won’t allow it. Maybe things will change but these offenses that are putting up big numbers, didn’t do that last year when we played them. The most point given up was against UTAH and that game could have gone a lot differently. Those points scored weren’t all on the defense. I no longer hold my breath on 3rd and 15. I even have high hopes on 3rd and 4.

    • I’m thinking this is a safe bet. They showed a bit of it with SDSU but he never kept it even though he could have had some serious yards if he had. I could see RPO with DJU 5-10 times which will open up the rest of the run game.

I watched that second pick vs SDSU and Bolden was just physically outclassed by a bigger more physical corner. No separation and no physicality or range at all. Maybe use him for screens and sweeps but he has nothing on legit corners.

  11. 4
    2

I’m not too concerned from what I saw last game. Defense had 5 sacks and held them to 12 pts. Offense had a beautifully designed touchdown to lineman which robbed DJU of a td due to being a lateral. Also, Gould had a huge 75 yd screen pass that really showed his speed and skills.

Even at the NFL level, good teams struggle in games against lesser opponents. There’s so many variables with personal lives, hidden injuries, etc. To me, that’s one of the most intriguing aspects of sports. That’s why they play the game and don’t just simulate on a computer.

The beavers just tied a streak that we haven’t seen for 23 years. Let that sink in. This year I’m just enjoying the ride. How many seasons have the Beavers showed up and dominated like they have so far?

I expect a tough game from wazzu but ultimately they COUUG it this time. GO BEAVS! 36-33

    • Ah good reminder that the Cougs must deal with the specter of “Cougin’ It”. That may be the difference.

Beavs are a balanced team and may actually have a better defense than offense again which would be incredible.

Agree about the punting situation, feels like disaster waiting to happen, with poor results on punts that do occur.

  12. I’m not sure if DJU struggles that it would be Chiles that comes in. He’s only played when the game is in hand to get him experience and see what he can do. I could easily see BG being the next QB up with him knowing the offense and the coaches knowing what he can and can’t do. It’s possible the run game is the most effective when he’s in with his ability to make the right checks at the line like gebbia used to. Obviously passing game is more limited with no deep ball but he’s proven to be pretty accurate on throws that move the chains. That being said I wouldn’t mind seeing Chiles come in if the coaches think he’s ready against a tough coug defense. But my impression so far is that he’s quick to take off and run (not the worst thing with him) and has poor clock management at getter out of the huddle and the ball snapped in time.

But my impression so far is that he’s quick to take off and run (not the worst thing with him) and has poor clock management at getter out of the huddle and the ball snapped in time.

Waaaay too soon to come to this conclusion or even impression. Need at least 4 games to get an idea of a QB, and even then it’s just an idea. He’s had a few plays…

One exception was Seth Collins. He was so bad it was obvious from snap 1.

    • A benefit of DJ’s experience, particularly on big stages, is he seems unlikely to get too high or too low. I think that fits in well with Smith’s “The score is 0-0 every play” philosophy.

Enjoy this season! The PAC looks tougher than I expected, should be lots if good contests.

I don’t think we’ve seen much of the playbook its been pretty bland outside of the tackle toss left play.. Infact I think we haven’t seen half of the offensive set were going to eventually run. To me it seems like we’re keeping DJ on a short playbook, but what I’m not sure of if it’s because we’re holding some stuff close or he can’t figure out more then what he’s running. Adain had a completely different set of plays out of some of the same sets. He was also allowed to run if he didn’t see what he liked. Maybe we really open the playbook up this weekend.

    • You’re correct.

DJ is learning in obvious stages.

I hesitate to call it learning, given he knows it, and he just needs to be more efficient.

Was just wondering how long till we see the modified version of that Joshua Gray touchdown?
You just know that was thrown out there so it would be on film for some future team to bite on it in the future and open up some other huge opportunity for Martinez or one of our receivers.

My thoughts for the position matchups and other random things that came to me,

Last year, the Cougs started off the same way. 3-0 with a win over a ranked Wisconsin team. Then opened at home vs Oregon. Couged that game away. However the Cougs have not couged it vs the Beavs in at least the last decade or two or ever. Couldn’t find one that really qualified. The only game to look at for them this year is the Wisconsin game and they played well especially on defense. Dickert was asked about the similarities to last year, but brushed it off.

The game plan is pretty similar to last year and the year before. Run run run and don’t turn it over. Controlled the clock for almost 35 min last year. Would be even more under the new clock rules.

    On offense –
The question of is DJU the right QB for the job will be answered this weekend. Huge opportunity for him to step up and show who he can be. It’s not win the game on his own, but manage the offense and keep moving the ball. Coaches don’t need to try to get him going early in the game. Smash mouth football is where it’s at. Roll out play action has been effective. Take the check down.

Coaches have limited Martinez’s workload so far. I think he’ll be north of 20 carries this game. WSU has some good edge rushers. Great way to limit their effectiveness is to pound them in the run game early. They’ll be pretty exhausted at the end if the Beavs need to drive down the field for a score. Quote from last year – “We didn’t stop the run, so why would they have passed the ball?” WSU edge rusher Ron Stone Jr. said.

WR’s will need to be better here. On some of the routes last game, they could have been better. Bolden needs to play like a #1 WR. The INTs were all on DJU though. TE’s are a wildcard. Always potential for a big game. I’m going to guess WSU will try to jump the screen game, Beavs need to have a wrinkle there.

OL had somewhat of a shaky game for a top in the nation OL group. Gave up more hurries than you’d like. Up against a good WSU pass rush. Stone had 2 sacks with 2 forced fumbles. One being returned for a TD against Wisc.

These are the games the Dline loves. Get to pass rush on most downs. Should be pretty confident after last week. Pretty similar game plan as the first week and this past week. Keep the QB in the pocket and collapse on him. In drives vs Wisconsin where WSU gave up a sack, they got one FG out of it. Last year, Beavs only gave up a FG on drives with a sack on Ward. Odd stat but hey. It looks like they can pick on the back when he’s pass blocking as he’s not very good. If Bray can get a rusher one on one vs the back, there will be lots of success. Great to see Chatfield making plays. He transferred in with high expectations and now starting to meet them.

LBs need to do what they’ve been doing. Tackle and tackle some more. Missed tackles vs WSU will cost a lot of yards. WSU run game isn’t great but in short yardage, they’ll get those first downs which is frustrating to no end.

DBs need to tackle as well and not put themselves in positions to give up big plays. WSU is going to get yards through the air. Limit the YAC yards. The defense plays well in the redzone where the WRs can’t run downfield. Need Cooper to be ready, if he doesn’t play, it’s a huge loss. Not sure how ready Julian is. Whoever is opposite Robinson is going to get picked on a lot. Ivy because of his penalty issues and McCoy because he’s a true freshman.

Special teams – don’t mess up. Kicks beyond 45, I can accept a miss. WSU will probably not kick it where Gould or Bolden can return a punt or kick but if they do, watch out.

    Xfactors and other things
    – Ward isn’t quite an elusive runner but can extend plays. Wisconsin spied him a bit. Rushed 3 and then the 4th tracked Ward.
    – Have to wonder how the Cougs start out the game. Beavs showed a lot of sleepiness after the starters played first half the prior week. Cougs starters were pulled at halftime last week after a very easy first half. They scored on every possession and Northern Colorado punted every time. It’s quite a step up into conference play after such an easy outing.
    – Wisconsin really shut down WSU in the second half. Hopefully the coaching staff can find something there
    – Last year’s game means nothing. WSU is much better this year
    – Tibs was the d coordinator the last time in Pullman. Remember that guy?
    – Officials – WSU benefitted from a non safety call and a fumble call vs Wisc in the 4th quarter on consecutive drives that would have definitely changed the game. Safety would have tied the game and the fumble call led to WSU’s clinching TD.
    – the nation will be watching and before/during/after the game everyone should be tweeting, posting etc asking how are these two teams left out of realignment? Trend everywhere on the interwebs
    – Fans at the game should definitely all have PAC2 signs
    – Main competition for eye balls, games at the same time Sat – Arkansas/LSU, Ohio St/Notre Dame, Penn St/Iowa

Fact from the OSU press release, why post it??? but I get it
    – Oregon State is 2-7 against ranked teams under head coach Jonathan Smith, with both wins coming against Oregon.

To me, this is a 50/50 game. Not a game I’m nervous about or confident either, I just want it to get here now. This is where coaching will really count. Can Smith outcoach Dickert? Both teams are motivated enough to put out the effort needed to win.

It’ll be a great game to watch as a college football fan but fans of either teams will have elevated heart rates the entire game.

    Go Beavs!

    • With Martinez limited, why didn’t Newell play more (at all?) ? That confuses me, especially in a game where the 2nd string and 3rd string rbs should have be taking the majority of the snaps.

    • I think Riley Sharp has the opportunity to be a difference maker in blocking. A converted edge defender and listed at 6’6″ 248 lbs, in 2022 he had 4.5 tackles for loss and three sacks, so he knows what its like to to play on that side of the ball, and it seems like he could be an aggressive, attacking blocker, even more so than a TE who might normally be focused on receiving. I know all of OSU TEs are supposed to block, but I’ll be interested to see if Sharp in particular seems to take on Stone or others in a particularly aggressive and effective fashion.

Rittenberg (ESPN) from who’s on the short list for next coach at MSU after the Tucker debacle:

“Oregon State coach Jonathan Smith: Smith’s loyalty to his alma mater will be tested this winter, as he will be on the wish list of just about any power conference school that has a vacancy. His schematic proficiency and steady leadership could be exactly what MSU needs after a turbulent time. Smith, 44, guided Oregon State to a No. 17 finish last season and has the Beavers involved in a very competitive Pac-12 race. He loves Oregon State and has spent his entire career in the Pacific Northwest. But Oregon State faces an uncertain future after conference realignment, and Smith’s geographic ties actually make more sense with the reshaped Big Ten in 2024.”

  17. Smith will finish out his current contract at a minimum, unless he gets a godfather offer from a truly elite program. Michigan State isn’t even in the conversation. It would have to be an Ohio State-Michigan level program to get Smith to leave immediately.

    • Based on Luck of the Beavs, here is what could happen:
Harbaugh leaves Michigan for San Diego Chargers job,
Saban has mounting pressure to retire at end of the year due to his age and worst year since anyone can remember,
Lincoln Riley leaves for Dallas Cowboys,

So Michigan, Alabama, USC could all feasibly be in a bidding war for JS and staff.
Deion may jump for one of them but JS is the better fit for each of them.

Easily offered $11mil/year if JS wins the conference and gets the Beavs to the playoffs.

      • I don’t see where JS is a cultural fit for any of those schools. They want wins AND the show. JS is a no BS no frills guy just does not seem like a fit. They would throw him overboard after one 9-3 season.

        • The media ripped on him to no end when he was the offensive coordinator at Washington partly based on their expectation for on field performance but mostly his personality. They wanted a bigger personality. If I were JS unless I needed a payday, I’d be very wary of heading to those “greener” pastures.

      • 3
        1

While I would love for the Cowboys to turn themselves into the Cardinals, I don’t see that happening.
But I will bake a cake in the shape of a hat and gladly eat it, if wrong.

Michigan is plausible. Saban isn’t looking as good, now that NIL is life. It turns out not having great academics or being in a state that doesn’t have major industries and/or connections leads to not having as many great big boosters with lots of disposable cash.

      • What would JS do with $11M/Year?!? That’s an awful lot of Zyn…

He should hire a personal chef and a trainer if he takes a high pressure job…gotta take care of your health!

        • Quantify that with a date. Next year, end of his contract, retirement age? Eventually yes he will leave but you’re leaving it too open ended for a “told you so” post when it happens.

          • 100% agree, my point is we can’t afford his current contract without P5 money regardless if we wants to stay or not. In some ways the merciful thing for Smith to do is take the big deal, and have another school pay the buyout. OSU gets an infusion of cash and lowers expenses by hiring a cheaper coach staff. I hope Angry and I are wrong, but it is the only realistic path without P5 money. Successful coaches are too competitive to stay in the minors, when the big leagues come calling.

      • I’m skeptical of and resent the MSU rumors because I don’t think they are based on anything. I think I saw where Dennis Dodd is jumping on the speculation. I just don’t think JS would go to that cesspool while all the legal crap plays out. Tucker is an idiot, but I think MSU’s holy-than-thou act is laughable too.

      • Vegas doesn’t want money on the Beavs. Otherwise it would have opened as a been a pick ‘em or WSU as favorite. The fact that some (novices) are surprised to see the Beavs as favorites yet the line has moved towards Beavs is a great sign. Vegas slightly underestimated the smart money. My hunch is Vegas has Beavs winning by 7+ in low scoring game. My initial prediction was Beavs 31 WSU 24 and based on how the line has moved, I’m thinking my initial hunch was pretty solid. If anything, I’d adjust my prediction to 31-21 Beavs. If I was to place a wager, I’d take the under 56 points.

  18. PAC 12 Heisman candidates summary highlights the team depth in the conference as well as obviously Heisman contenders:

“One year before one of the oldest conferences in college football will see all but two of its member schools depart for others, the Pac-12 could be having one of its most competitive years in recent memory.

Eight of its 12 schools are ranked in the US LBM Coaches Poll ahead of Week 4 action.”

DJ gets a brief mention, his numbers are nowhere near the others, but the cite the opportunity he has in conference play to move up…

  19. Too bad Kieth Jackson isn’t around to call this “last-of-the-PAC” games…

“Whoa Nelly! What a barn burner here on the Palouse today! We may be seeing these Beavers in the Granddaddy of them All on New Year’s Day!”

“The late, great broadcaster Keith Jackson is credited with coining the term, “The Granddaddy of Them All.” A statue of him now stands outside of the structure.”

I’m glad to see people coming around to JS leaving. If we don’t get a P5 invite he is gone. There is no way a guy that competitive coaches in the MWC. Nada. There are very few things in life that have probability of zero, but this would be one of them.

    • What’s a little strange is that he’s getting so much attention after having one good season as a head coach. I guess it shows how difficult everyone thinks it is to be successful at Oregon State.

      • He’s made steady progress in talent and wins, made some good hires and fired Timmy, and in ’21 was very close to 9-10 wins. The lack of backsliding should be noteworthy. Doesn’t look like a flash in the pan.

  21. I tried fixing the edit button and created a site critical error. Back to the drawing board. The new theme a few years ago is the root cause. I’ll have to tinker with this but will fix it.

“No. 15 Oregon State at No. 24 Washington State (7 p.m. ET, Fox)

Pick your favorite underdog, America. Is it Oregon State, the most physical team west of the Rockies? How about plucky Washington State, which has topped Wisconsin in back-to-back years and climbed back into the Top 25 despite being picked seventh in the preseason Pac-12 poll? The last two teams standing in what used to be one of the proudest conferences in college sports now carry the flag only for themselves and face a dire future outside of the Power Five. Pac-12 football will close for good in December; the Beavers or Cougars might as well go out and win the whole thing.”

Beavers most physical west of the Rockies?!? I suppose USAToday just made it personal for Sanders…

    Nice press anyhow…

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2023/09/19/college-football-week-4-games-to-watch-ranked-matchups/70890223007/

  23. Cam Ward was sacked 3 times by Colorado State and 4 times by Wisconsin.
Beavs sacked the QB 3 times each in first two games and then sacked SDSU QB 6 times.
Seems pretty likely for OSU to reach at least 3 sacks on Saturday.
Also Cam Ward hasn’t thrown a pick yet but he fumbled three times vs CSU, losing two

    • As a Beaver fan, I am a Ward fan. I don’t think he can pass the ball well and his decisions seem to be sketchy. This year, he hasn’t played a defense like the Beavs. He will be confused and out of rhythm. I would be more worried if they had a good running game or defense but for them to win they need good qb play and I don’t see Ward providing that.

    • It’s interesting, there’s a lot of hype going on regarding Ward, but the articles I’ve seen don’t mention much about the Beav defense absolutely shutting him down last year. It was a big win, ending a 7 game losing streak to Wazzu and neutralizing the Coug offense.

  24. Bray in an interview said “money is not the most important thing”. Bray and Smith might really like the slow life in Corvallis. Maybe having their families in this environment is satisfying. In a rebuilt Pac# you would have a couple programs who have given fits to Pac opponents. Probably would be the best of the G5 and get to the playoffs every year. Would a playoff birth be better than the Jimmy Bowl, or the Sun Bowl? Smith could leave, but there is more to life to consider. The way things are going with Disney, the SEC might not be too far off of the Apple+ offer when all’s said and done.

  25. Does anyone know how soon the AD would need to realistically start working on next season’s schedule if the Beavs go into “stall mode” for 24? I saw a blurb that the Beavs and Wazzu would play a home-and-home to fill an additional slot, but that’s still seven more games to schedule, right?

    • There was some talk of MWC teams dropping FCS games on their schedules to work with OSU/WSU and attempt partner informally for short term scheduling until things get resolved or the reverse merger can happen after AAC fees are waived in 2024(?).

All speculation but seems like a possible solution for football at least. Not sure how the rest of the sports get scheduled or if the other sports have as long of a lead time as football is traditionally had.

    • 2026 is when the MWC grant of rights ends.

What would happen if the re-formed Pac X reverse-merges with the Big 12 and uses the network–something the Big 12 doesn’t have–to bring in some MWC schools to round out the scene?

Not that Yormark wouldn’t want those schools in California anyway. He is reportedly wanting to push hoops as a revenue generator, as well. If he reads opportunity in a streaming deal with the first super-conference with the PAC branding and works a streaming deal to go international.

We’d finally be in a great wrestling conference, as well.

    • Figured it was internet click-bait – but it does make sense. For the amount of money it would take to make Wazzu and Oregon State ok with it – the Big 12 and all of college football and the networks could avoid protracted legal trouble, potential hearings in Washington DC, bad PR and perhaps most importantly, adding more teams into a “Power Five” classification if the Beavs and Cougs do a reverse-merger with the MWC. Easier to split the pie into two more pieces, than potentially 10. And I do think conferences will eventually do a “dynamic rights” thing with their TV money – every team will get a Basic share, with additional money based on rankings, bowl games, tv ratings etc. (maybe even academic achievement! :) )

  26. Update from WSU prez:

    https://x.com/WSU_Cougar_Pres/status/1704243249031082407?s=20

Aligns with the prevailing wisdom that if the 2Pac can seize control of the Pac-12 assets, that they will organize to preserve the conference with the option to play the long game with litigation and rebuild/reverse-merging with the MWC.

Ultimately, this gives them a lot of leverage to influence ESPN to simply fund them into the Big12 (at a full share even) to avoid being held up in long-term litigation (and discovery) with the Pac-12 surviving as a brand and hanging around as a “kinda-sorta” Power 5 when ESPN/FOX want to be done with it and move to a Power 4.

OSU/WSU winning control of the Pac-12 board is such a big deal, it almost guarantees the networks being incentivized to get them into the Big12 (although I’m not sure Murthy/Shulz really want that), while a loss almost certainly relegates them to the MWC (worst case scenario).

  27. Interesting – WSU seems to make the statements – rarely hear from.OSU. I assume that is by design so there is no slip-up in communication. Also Schulz is President of the board.

  28. I rewatched the game and saw some things that need to be cleaned up.

    – the RBs need to be much better in pass protection. There was one play that the lb came on a blitz and put the rb straight on his ass. I couldn’t tell who the back was but they haven’t done well so far this season.

    – Oline needs to do better at blitz pickups. A lot of times guys are coming in completely unblocked. Also have to eliminate the TFL. There are lots of times this has happened and put the offense behind the sticks.

    – game could’ve been much closer if it wasn’t for big drops by their receivers and a bad throw that would’ve been a TD. Also they had 2 missed field goals.

    – seems like every game so far we’ve given up a big return. That needs to be cleaned up.

    – defense needs to play better against the screen plays. So far in every game that’s hurt them a lot.

    – DJU obviously played poorly but some of that was because of pressure. Regardless i expect him to play better and to make plays under duress.

    – a bright spot is McCoy. He’s looked pretty good so far from what I’ve seen especially for a freshman. I expect that he’ll be starting soon. We’ll need the secondary playing at a high level next game.

  29. Any guesses on v. UW start time? Both teams should be ranked….1 pm? 4 pm? Definitely shouldn’t be a late game unless both teams tank.

  30. Anybody read this story from Ross Dellenger about the Pac/MWC considering a reformed 2 piece conference where there’s basically 16 teams. an 8 team top revenue earning group and an 8 team lower revenue earning group, and the bottom 2 from the 1st 8 and top 2 from 2nd 8 basically swap places year to year, similar to relegation in Soccer leagues?
It’s creative at least, and would make those mid tier games more interesting.

But lots of issues to work through like who gets paid how much, budgeting issues and would it be all moot if the other Power teams just vote that they’re all excluded from P status? If they cant have Power status a 16 team league with only 1 playoff spot just doesnt make sense.

    https://twitter.com/RossDellenger/status/1704282126781198599?t=27JNL14SsIpSn1JcBf8N2g&s=19

    • There would definitely be some incremental media interest in a promotion/relegation setup at the beginning. This wouldn’t be a good deal for OSU, though. It wouldn’t boost the prestige of the conference at all, and all it does is open us up to the downside of getting relegated to a LESSER version of the MWC. Not good.

  31. Power 5 equates to more money. But starting in 24 what are the automatic qualifiers? The top six conference champions are in. You could have 5 G5 champions and 1 “power” 5 champion. Probably top 4 or 5 Power# champs will be in no matter what. But after that what is available? Most or all of the January 1st bowls will be rolled into the championship series. After that, the bowl games are tie ins to specific conferences. Might be a little different in BBall.

    • It’s not just “more money”. It’s exponentially more money and national exposure to be in the Power 5/4 vs the MWC.

The difference between having to settle for the MWC because the 2Pac loses control of the Pac-12, or getting a Big12 invite because ESPN doesn’t want to deal with the Pac-12 brand hanging around is likely close to $40-50million/year when it’s all said and done. It’s that extreme. Even if OSU were able to make it to the 12-team playoffs by winning the MWC in Football with 1 loss or less, it doesn’t even come close to making up for the gargantuan loss in revenue across the board. Let alone the mass exodus of players (and coaches) that want to be in the Power 5/4.

It all hinges how it plays out in court for the 2Pac and the Pac-12 assets. Having to join the MWC outright is a death sentence for OSU athletics as we have known it.

      • You think we’re going to take the leverage we have and just give it away?

That would be some serious weak sauce.

Our history is to start great conferences, not join others. Every once in a while, we end up floating as a semi-independent entity, get ourselves a Heisman and a hyped up post-season, then just join the Pac again, with whatever name we come with this time.

          • So is the Big 12.

It will be a couple teams on top, and everyone else tagging along.

The MWC schools who are at the top are doing it without any money. They’re the last to renegotiate, and they will at least double or triple their current money. As a rebranded Pac, they earn that much more.

Give these schools just the double revenues, as a minimum, and they can take off. There’s a reason the LA schools constantly kept these schools in drought conditions. Now, they’ve opened the door, and they will get what they never wanted.

I was thinking about the relegation idea. It’s terrible.

But what is a good idea is to create both a P5 and a G5 conference, with an understanding that any schools in that G5 group who take it upon themselves to invest in their programs to bring them up to P5 level (CSU being an example, re facilities and spending on a coach) will automatically be added to the P5 group. Nobody in the P5 group should fear relegation, but all of them should be helping to build the G5 group up to P5 teams.

          • But the current p5 sees themselves as elite and above a g5 so much so that their intent is to move to consolidate into as few teams as possible, ie semi pro. I’m perfectly willing to have them do so with their preferred 20 teams and leave the remaining 100-110 teams in a college football system

          • I’d rather they do that now.

Then we could have a real NCAA Championship, for once. Imagine the first season the NCAA actually sanctions a Championship, rather than just recognizing them.

      • The nature of the P5 having autonomy makes them de facto power conferences.

In reality, their focus on football has led them to suffer in the hoops department. The MWC and Zags are clearly better than the Pac. The Big East beats up on the ACC, now.

It turns out Steve Alford was right.

  32. I think the great benefit from an Apple streaming type deal is the ability to control your game times again. It used to be a normal Saturday afternoon with a 1:00pm kickoff for most schools across the country. In hindsight, the trade-off of tv exposure has a steep cost to casual fandom and practical tickets sales once you’ve been relegated to the “PAC after Dark” time slot for many years.
Streaming takes control back to the schools to some degree I’d think. Returning to the 3:30 or 1:00pm kick-off would be both nostalgic and refreshing for OSU fans. And more likely sellouts on a regular basis.
Build it and they will come.

Recruit distance runners from Kenya and Ethiopia; Croatians and Brazilians for hoops and volleyball; Japan and Mexico for baseball; imagine the opportunities to expand potential recruiting in all the Olympics, with students having a platform back home.

      And imagine the potential subscriptions.

People are thinking in the same tunnel vision of football only. Football is in a bubble that will decline. Long-term outlooks require a more broad-based solution than focusing on a single sport.

And, I will always think the first conference to introduce esports will dominate that long-term outlook. Those who make the rules generally rule for a while.

      • Global recruiting would be an intriguing game to play. I’m just not sure we can pull it off without big money. Unless you decide to recruit by word of mouth, plane tickets to foreign countries aren’t cheap. How easy are student visas to get?

        • It’d require some additional planning/infrastructure & fine tuning, but there’s already examples of dual national/foreign athletes who trained at a US university program (on scholarship) for their sport while earning their degree, then representing their country at international competition (i.e. Olympics).

    • That’s what I’ve been saying. Schedule your games right over the top of whatever prime time shit ESPN and Fox want to force you to watch. Once people have the streaming service there will be multiple choices of what to watch during prime time, not just the 3 games the networks want you to see to fulfill their “ermahgherd look these raaaatiiinngs” bullshit.

They get their ratings because that’s the only thing on.

    This x 100

Noon this week, 6pm next friday, 8pm the following saturday, the next gane at 7pm, then who the hell knows until the network decides and knows where they broadcast any of them.

NFL doesn’t do that, high school doesn’t do that, college though you aren’t allowed to plan

  34. MWC relative strength is pretty evident looking at Sagarin rankings:
    http://sagarin.com/sports/cfsend.htm

They easily have the highest SOS as a conference, with 12 collective games against top 30 teams. As a conference, they were 1-11 in those games (with Wyoming-TT being the only win).

The exPAC is the only conference with a winning record against top 30 teams. Unfortunately, Stanford and ASU’s terrible ranking (which has them in line with mid-tier MWC teams) is dragging the conference overall rating down.

  35. First things first: Any word about permanent injunction hearing time? I guess it hasn’t been that long since the temporary but this needs to get going. I don’t know who sets the calendar or how.

Alan Thayer from Beavers behind enemy lines (he is a business attorney) was on a podcast yesterday and he has been checking every day to see if anything has been scheduled by the court and as of yesterday nothing has been scheduled. He thinks this shows that the 2 sides are working on a settlement. He also mentioned that none of the other 10 schools have asked to join the lawsuit and that is another clue that they don’t want to fight they want to settle. He thinks there will be some sort of resolution in the next 2-3 weeks. He also thinks there is a good chance that part of this settlement will involve the networks finding a home for Wazzu and OSU.

  37. One other thing he mentioned was the law-firm representing OSU are experts in Anti-Trust litigation and they have represented the MLB Players association in the past. He thinks this is not a coincidence and we are using our leverage to get into a P4 conference. He made to point to day discovery within the current lawsuit can reach the other schools and the TV networks even though they are not a direct party in the TRO.

    • 5
      2

Not just leveraging into P4 conference but also big dollars as part of the settlement.
I’d guess it is almost a name your price scenario from the networks to avoid discovery and exposure of their back room discussions.
The Traitors10 have to stand down and pretend they have become victims of the networks at this point and would rather not be exposed as actively engaged in the process but reacting to it for the best interests of the institutions. All malarkey but likely the simplest optics for them compared To a drawn out public court case the presents them as the greedy, vindictive villain s of the PAC divorce.

    • 1
      1

This still feels like a scenario that ends in a lot of Friday and late night games. I guess that’s the price you have to pay for “relevance.”

Imagine if Hunter Biden was caught giving someone a clit job? I wonder how this will affect the “pro-mortality” and “pro-family” Republicans who claim they live on higher ground but then it turns out their ground was higher only because it’s landfill waste.

    • He’s definitely earned and made the most out of his opportunities. Hopefully he sees more playing time and really becomes the next walk on success. I’ve been impressed by him.

Wondering when we start to see more of the freshman. Smith said they all could cosme in and contribute.

  39. WSU lost a DT for the season this week.
Sounds like last week was his first game back from an injury and them he got hurt again with a separate injury

  40. Tongue says he tore his ACL, MCL, Meniscus and patella tendon. Basically tore everything in the knee except the skin around it.

He’s out for the year, and likely next year too. Could be a career ending injury. He was looking very promising at LB.

  41. News of the [sports media] world in today’s Wall Street Journal–In stories stacked together on page B3, above the fold we find headlined: “Disney to Invest in Theme Parks, Cruises.” This because, as the story makes clear, it’s the only part of the enterprise making money these days: “As more cable television customers cut the cord, Disney’s TV networks are starting to generate less profit, forcing the company to rely on its theme parks as its primary financial engine. For the last three quarters operating income from the parks division has exceeded that of the so-called linear TV business by hundreds of millions of dollars. That could signal a lasting shift in the balance between the two divisions.”

Just below that is a story headlined “Max Streaming Service Unveils Sports Tier.” This details Warner/Discovery’s launch of a new sports streaming service. This channel would include TNT and TBS but with an added tier of offerings over time, in an attempt to match Amazon’s prime offerings plus Apple’s. After referencing the same cord cutting pattern noted in the Disney story, we get to the shape of the future. “In addition to basketball and baseball, other sports available on Max will include the NCAA mens college basketball tournament . . . and the NHL.” Special note to Jack: “The Max platform also will feature content from Warner Bros. Discovery’s international sports channels, such as cycling event.”

    Stupid UW. UO the sheep.

Didn’t realize OSU was doing so poorly in penalties and TOP. I figured that we had the ball more than the opponents so far but that’s not the case which is surprising. Also the Beavs are averaging about 62 yards a game and the opponents are barely committing any against us. I’m sure a lot of that is due to Ivy and his first game because it seems like they’ve been pretty good so far. Their turnover margin isn’t very good so far either and the cougs are doing well at it. The Beavs really need to take care of the ball in this game.

    • If you haven’t been nervous about every game at Martin, you haven’t been a Pac fan long enough.

Never take a trip there lightly.

But the short turnaround also sucks.

    • You and most Beavos. I haven’t watched every play or interview but I have a gut concern that DJ – for all the hype – doesn’t seem to have fervor – I get it that he hopes his time with the Beavs will promote his NFL chances and that after such a short time in Corvallis without Pac-12 experience – he might not have the same intensity as Isaac Hodgins, but . . .

    • Interesting. At first glance, seems like it would lead to more corruption/ illegal activities to stay in the tier 1. Something needs to be done, I’m not smart enough to figure it out.

    • That’s the key. It only makes sense for G5 teams. I would love to see this, but I don’t want the Beavs involved unless it’s a nationwide thing.

  43. 1
    1

So we are going independent? Clownzano has a piece up about the Pac-2, which is basically independent football. I’d prefer this to the MWC.

    • I’m confused on how we actually make any money doing this? Notre Dame has arguably the biggest college following, BYU had the Mormans, Army has tax payer dollars. Why would anyone scheduled a game with us and pay a million or more when they can scheduled a G5 school for $500,000. And the networks don’t have to schedule our games on national TV, they just put it on streaming late at night and be done with it.

      • Why would anyone scheduled a game with us and pay a million or more when they can scheduled a G5 school for $500,000.

I think scheduling good OOC games will become more imperative in terms of rankings. Teams that do it will shoot up the board faster. It’s speculation, but it seems more and more that people are critical of cupcake games, and I think that trend will continue now that there’s consolidation. It allows a way to separate teams. So I can see teams wanting to schedule us just to say they played/beat (lol) a quality team.

In terms of things we can control, charge Ala cart for games. I’d pay to watch Beav games on YouTube. I’d prefer it because then I can sit in the living room and watch on the big TV rather in the media room/watching on the PC. It’s also nice to legally pay for things if they’re going to a cause like direct to the school. All revenue goes directly to the school. We’d have to think creatively. Schedule the game on a weeknight when there are no other games on. If OSU owns the media rights, they can schedule a game whenever they want. A school might want to schedule us in that situation just to get their own team exposure. Might be worth the 500k extra to them. They could probably sell their own local ads given all eyes will be on that game if nothing else is on. Things like that. Just have to keep thinking outside the box. There are many other things we can do when not shackled to the current media. Broadcast games overseas and find markets there, etc. We already have OSU extension campus with overseas students. No reason not to market games over there. Schedule games in major areas with teams in our boat. Like take an Air Force or BSU and play them in a major market like Austin, NYC, etc. Neutral field games with 50/50 revenue splitting. Etc etc. Just have to think outside of this rigid media rights box we’re so used to. We’d have complete freedom to get creative.

  44. This is all about keeping leverage and the P5 status. If the other conferences / TV networks try to push us aside an anti-trust lawsuit will be filed. I believe the end game is to have the Networks / Other P4 find us a home. Nobody wants a rouge P5 conference with 2 teams holding up everything.

        • I’m not sure we have leverage. You mean legal battle? I was the first person to bring that up on like day 1, but it was just a question…I’m assuming the conferences all thought of legal issues ahead of time and destroyed data or had a case ready to present. If you mean hanging on to Pac funds, maybe. But I doubt those teams care about that since they’re going to get their pay days in the new conferences.

          • You need to listen to the links to Alan Thayer that I’ve been posted. You sound uninformed on the extent of the legal battle and how much leverage the Beavs/Cougs may actually have in the present circumstances. It may be more likely that the Traitors10 were told by the networks to “jump” and they all did immediately without examining the repercussions. The present leverage is “the repercussions” and the networks are about to realize they have overplayed their hand badly.
Playing the leverage hand correctly is now the challenge for PAC2.

          • Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t 2 nw schools decide over night, essentially less than 12 hours; wasn’t there a duck douche making the decision on the golf course? Not sure that anyone took the time to actually consider what they were doing may be a legal issue.

Big12 and MW/PAC should merge and then split into 2 more geographic conferences.

      Something like:
      Big12 West Ariz/ASU/BOISE/BYU/FSU/HAW/NEV/OSU/SDSU/SJSU/UNLV/USU/UTAH/WSU/WYO
      Big12 East: AF/CSU/BAYLOR/CIN/COL/HOU/ISU/KANSAS/KSU/OKSTATE/TCU/TTU/UNM/UCF/WVU

maybe shift a few teams from one side or the other to create more balance, but you could have 2 somewhat geographically similar conferences that could dominate the western half of the map and still have their toes in the Eastern Times zone without forcing those teams to travel too much.

      • Thanks NB…

“Schulz: “The fiscal condition of the Pac-12 conference is far from clear. … Our two schools continue to seek financial records from the conference and are painstakingly reviewing documents to get an accurate picture of the conference’s fiscal position.””

Schulz: “I don’t think it is going to take us months to get the full picture (of assets and liabilities, and potential partnerships). I am optimistic that in the next 30 days or so we’re going to have a pretty decent idea of a lot of this and that will help our decision-making.”

Oregon State AD Scott Barnes said the idea of a promotion/relegation model is “worthy of our study” and said that he believes unequal media revenue distribution, contraction, and/or pure relegation “will take place, I think. I think that’s coming.”

Schulz says that so many schools are locked into media rights deals at the moment that it’s hard to imagine disruption/movement in the next 4-5 years re: the way FBS football is governed.

Schulz: “Practically, we can all come up with something that would be better than the way it’s done today I just don’t see a great, easy pathway to get there without a major market disrupter coming in with a lot of financial resources to say let’s do something different.”

        • I’m curious why the financials are so obfuscated, has there been no accountability? Who is ‘in charge’ of the money at the pac 12? Is it run like a giant slush fund?

Is anyone else as nervous as me for the game?! One of my best friends, Bleedorange, said I should swing by and give my two cents on the game being a Coug. But first off, I wanted to say I couldn’t be happier to have the Beaves as a partner through all the realignment bs… The best quote I’ve heard about our team’s relationship this week is, “This is like two guys in a foxhole, in the middle of winter on the front lines with bombs going off all around them. It’s really hard not to like the guy next to you.” Bleedorange and used to watch every Cough and Beave game at the local pub and bitch and complain how we never get the respect that’s deserved, but over the years we have learned to punch above our weight class and have no doubt the schools will figure something out to keep us competitive. I personally know a decent amount about the X’s and O’s as I played college ball for a smaller school in Montana, and I can tell you that our teams match up very well! I have read a ton about both teams and watched all the games, the Cougs 3 times each. One thing that has been frustrating me is all the stats everyone has been throwing out… If it was up to me, you should only be pulling stats from the first half, because when you play cupcakes, they get diluted with second and third string players. and second, no one knows how good anyone is yet, so stats for the most part are very subjective 3 weeks in. Everyone is spinning them how it best fits their program. (Which is dangerous if you’re putting money on the game)
There are three main points that I think will be big influencers in how the game will turn out.
First, we think DJ doesn’t play well under pressure. Martinez and your Oline are specimens. We are going to throw everything but the kitchen sink at the run and DJ all game. Try and make the Beaves beat us through the air. If DJ plays well, it will be a tough night for us. As for the Cougs on O, we are very different than last year outside the fact we still throw a ton. If you guys can disrupt our very average Oline you will get a fumble or two, guaranteed. Ward and been stripped a couple of times and our center has snapped it over his head a few times. Ward, does look like a new player this year than last year. Much faster reads, more accurate and runs when the Online/pocket breaks. If he has time to throw, I think you DB’s will have a long night.
Second, both coaches are very, very good. Whoever makes the right calls, blitzes and correct audibles is going to have a ton of success. My experience is a 2 or 3 star athlete can make a 5 star look sh*! if the right call is made.
Lastly, if one of us takes an early lead and we are playing catch up it will be much easier to predict the play calls and that will be a touph hill to climb.
Hope you all have a blast if you’re going to the game! Fingers crossed the players do something cool prior to kick off to show unity! I know our fans are excited to have you there, will be some great tailgating! Go Cougs, Go Beaves, F*%! the traitors!

I’m still waiting for DJU to show that he can make plays when things break down. I’d like to see him extend some plays and scramble for some yards and even make an accurate throw with a guy bearing down on him. Even Nolan and BG would make plays they just don’t have the arm dju has. He has to show that he’s more than a game manager with a golden arm.

    • I think you’re spot on. The way to beat OSU is to load the box and force DJ to make back shoulder throws. He’ll get lucky a few times but he’s going to miss a lot of throws because the receivers don’t get much separation.

    • Thanks for your input Coug83. I thought the same thing last week when DJU struggled. If I’m the Cougs I would stack the box to stop Martinez and throw in a number of blitzes. Atack, attack and attack some more. The Beavs will need to counter by getting the tight ends more heavily involved. Quick slants and a quick drop and slinging it deep to stretch the field. Should be a fun game!

I get that OSU/WSU are going to be supportive of each other in this transitional period, but now WSU is instructing their band to play the OSU fight song prior to tomorrow’s game?
Next the winning team is going to be apologizing to the losing team on Saturday, for not allowing them to score more.

  47. 2

Why is it so hard to ask to have a QB that can be more than a game manager? When was the last time we had a QB that could take the team onto his back and become his own playmaker, even when the rest of the team isn’t performing well? Our last 3-4 QB have seemed to actively serve to make games harder for us.

I get using the Heisman winner is an extreme example, but Caleb Williams is a perfect example. We win the game versus USC with relative ease if he isn’t there. So clutch and elusive. Their first game this season, the center snaps over his head, Williams runs back, picks it up, avoids defenders, then throws for a 70 yard TD. Insane.

  48. Just thinking about the game, I’m guessing that Bray has a mix of looks to confuse and pressure Ward. Beavs are going to need to force some turnovers and Ward has some tendencies to fumble. Red zone defense will probably be the difference in the game, Beavs defense may give up a lot of yards in the middle of the field but tighten up in the red zone. WSU gets a few field goals and it will be the difference.

On offense, Beavs will probably go with max protect and 2 wr sets to see if they can get more time for DJ on go routes for Gould/Bolden. Offensively, look for new wrinkles in the running game and probably running the ball right at them. WSU will gamble with a feast or famine pressure like ASU used to do, which gives opportunity for big run plays if they run blitz but miss.

I like Beavs on the road to hit a couple of big plays, overcome some setbacks, sacks but come out with a win. Martinez needs to be ready for 20-25 runs and needs to get above 150 yds, DJ will probably have a few more designed runs and he should be careful with the ball.

    OSU 34- WSU 23

  49. I’m hoping to see some plays to counter the cougs DEs aggressiveness. Maybe some screens and dj pulling it a few times. They’ll have to be careful of those WR screens that the DEs don’t get in the lane and intercept one. Some draws could work well if they’re getting too far up the field.

  50. Love the talk of the relegation model. Would love to see an 18 team premier league, 18 team 1st Division, and a Tier III for everyone else. 2 teams go up and down from each league annually. Would be great because there would always be elite programs in the middle level and smaller programs would have a chance to break in to the premier level if they figured out a way to finance it.

    • It almost sounds like the plan is to leverage the PAC2 lawsuit into a new vision of college sports overall.

What if the slow roll for PAC2 leads to a nationwide 40 team conference operating under this relegation model? Combine PAC2, MWC, AAC, WAC, BIG12 teams interested in jumping out and any independents desiring a place to land.

Perhaps this is the route to dismantle by numbers the current system.

Well, since it’s a critical analysis, past trending would predict WSU 34 – 17. However the dawn of a new era allows me to predict OSU 34 – 17.

    • Bray’s Boys won’t give up more than 24, but I like their chance to hold Cougs to 17.
No reason JS and coach M can’t use line play and an emphasis on the run to get past 24, I’m ready to settle for 27-17.

  54. I do think litigation is the obvious course forward, I really don’t think the other schools and conferences and networks want their text messages and e-mails subpeonaed – it will make everyone look bad. And I know Oregon and Washington have Senators who are both going to the Big 10, but surprised none of them have called for hearings, or at least threatened federal funding. Senators have made bigger threats for more petty matters.

  55. PHIL STEELE REPORT: (#s are based on power ratings and to-date performance and not be construed as actual poll rankings.)

Last time here (‘21) the game had 7 lead changes. Oregon State (-4) led 10-3 at halftime but trailed 17-10 3Q before twice tying the game at 17 & 24 but allowed the game winning TD with 5:25 4Q losing 31-24. Last year’s Washington State loss ended an 8-game series win streak & the Cougars are now 6-3 ATS since ’14. Cougars (+3) finished with a 368-344-yard edge but never led, trailing 10-0 2Q but just 17-10 into 4Q in a 24-10 loss. Ben Gulbranson got his first start and Oregon State opened with a 60-yard KR to set up a 40/8 TD drive as Washington State had 6 offensive plays for 1-yard in the 1Q. Washington State down 21 drove 67/11 to get the yardage edge for game 368-344, Oregon State finished with a 24-10 win. Jonathan Smith is just 2-5 ATS as an AF and 9-18 SU on the road. Jake Dickert is 6-3 ATS at home. Oregon State opened with two impressive blowouts and last week DJ Uiagalelei threw for 284 yards but only hit 14-30 with 2 interceptions. Oregon State led just 12-3 at the half and San Diego State pulled to 19-9 with 9:01 left. Oregon State hit a short pass for a 75 yd TD and then San Diego State was intercepted in the EZ with 5:40 left. Jaylen Mayden hit 20-32-256. One Oregon State score was a backward pass to OL Joshua Gray who had their first rushing TD by an OL since 1996. Oregon State had a 475-326-yard edge. Washington State also opened with two powerful wins including a home upset of Wisconsin. Last week Cam Ward threw for 327 yards and had 5 1H TDs as Washington State -45’ led 35-0 and 43-7 at halftime and 64-14 when Jacob Sirmon (Washington transfer) hit a screen to Darius Stewart who broke numerous tackles on a 52 yd TD for the backdoor cover, 64-21. Washington State backup QB John Mateer hit 7-8 and 3rd string QB Emmett Brown played the 4Q and led a 67/9 drive but was intercepted at the 3. While my computer calls for Oregon State to win by 7 and the Average Game Grade has them by 5.2, the Beavers are not as strong on the road and Washington State is a tough place to play. Last year Washington State was 0-5 vs the Big Six of the Pac 12 and this is their best shot to break thru that ceiling this year.

    • That’s wild, they are buying teams now.

Curious to see what happens with records requests from the other ‘four corners schools.’

“It is not clear whether Arizona, Arizona State and, or Utah have received, or are receiving, payments similar to Colorado’s.

Utah denied an open-records request from USA TODAY for its agreement with the Big 12, indicating, among other reasons, that its document remains in draft form. Arizona and Arizona State have not responded to respective records requests for their agreements with the Big 12.”

      • I guess at least Colorado is being transparent. All of the other schools are hiding from reporters and their records requests.
Discovery is going to be pretty interesting if it comes to that. Have seen a few reporters talk about Oregon and UW refusing to comply with requests already

        • I don’t think it’s defined that way in the bylaws. I’m beginning to think these conference bylaws are intentionally ambiguous to keep open loopholes. The comment from the KS AD about the Big12 bylaws is interesting:

” but he said the conference’s lawyers advised them, Yormark and the schools’ presidents and chancellors that the bylaws were “not as rock-solid as everybody thought and we could be tied up on lawsuits forever.”

          Yikes.

          • There is no ambiguity in our bylaws concerning this topic. It would have to be written into the bylaws, in order to introduce ambiguity.

One can’t simply wish ambiguity, because they want to redefine the meaning of is.

The only way to redefine “notice of withdrawal” is if the bylaws themselves spell out a different meaning than the standard legal use. Retrograde arguments that the space between the lines “could” include such a suggestion is an insult to the court.

          • Our bylaws don’t try and define it, meaning it falls to standard legal definitions. Our bylaws don’t even narrow it down to “written” or “formal,” meaning any kind of notice is a valid form of notice.

Taking money from another conference as a part of a signing bonus is what we would call constructive notice.

So yes, by not further constricting the definition, it opens it up to all of the at-will contract norms

            There is no ambiguity.

  56. PFF ratings comparison (throwing out FCS games because they skew the ratings):

    Offense:
    Passing- adv OSU
    Receiving- adv OSU
    Running- adv OSU
    Run block- adv OSU
    Pass block- adv OSU

    Defense:
    Run Defense- adv WSU
    Pass Rush- adv WSU
    Coverage- adv WSU

Looks like a pretty clear offense vs. defense showdown.

      • These are based on PFF grades, not raw stats. OSU’s defensive grade against SDSU was pretty poor, despite the low points allowed. WSU’s passing grade has been mediocre, despite the statistical output.

If you trust their evaluations, these are actually better predictors than stats because process > outcome when it comes to predictability.

    • Not sure how applicable the WSU defensive ratings are as the offenses they have faced are unlike the Beavs offense. Wisconsin isn’t the rushing first team it once was. In the game vs WSU, the running backs had only 19 carries. The QB ran 10 times and definitely not all designed runs.

Can you see what the PFF ratings were in last year’s game?

  57. However, if beavs offense surprises, DJ and receivers click and open up the game, it wd be a changer. DJ”s NFL aspirations depend upon what he does with OSU – he doesn’t have a whole lot of time to get it together.

    • 2
      2

If the Beavs are the team we think they are, it should be a methodical grind it out convincing win. WSU has talent in key spots but I’d say JS has a deeper roster. Brays defense will be stout and though to score on.

Biggest concerns are punting and the random costly turnover. Wiscy was grinding WSU in 2nd half until a couple of key plays which sealed the game.

Beavs need to be poised and get the lead early to keep the crowd settled.

  58. 14

Not on alot of peoples’ radar, but OSU women’s XC has a race(Dellinger Invitational) at Oregon today.
They took 1st place last week amongst a field that also included Oregon.
Would be nice to go 2 for 2 vs the in state rival. Team has alot of depth this year.

    • OSU’s Kaylee Mitchell (from Salem) won the women’s 6K, but the Beavs finished fourth as a team. BYU, Oregon and Cal Poly took 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Caught up on the Thayer stuff.

    (1) He admits he’s not really versed in this stuff.
    (2) I’ve said since the day this went down there seems to be a legal case, so I’m not “behind the times”…
    (3) The stuff going down in court is interesting. It’s possible the Big12, Big10, ESPN/FOX or some large entity does offer to add OSU/WSU just to shut down the legal front and keep anti-trust/Title9 stuff off the table. This would be terrible for student-athletes, but SA aren’t really the same as they were in the past. They’re basically auditioning for pro-sports and not really students, so I’m not sure this is a great argument.

I’m starting to think the odds we get an invite somewhere is more probable. Is it good? I don’t know. We then become part of the problem. But, we don’t have to watch MWC football, so that’s great. I mean MWC football is a death sentence. So I guess it would be good, and we’d all be hypocrites for supporting it.

    • Travel for SA’s outside of FB is a real factor.
Mentioned the obvious hypocrisy angle awhile back. Doubt many every day fans will care unless some scribe goes on a rant.

What are the impediments to solving it by moving all except FB to regional “sub” conferences with plenty of OOC competition?

    • Thayer is getting a lot of clicks with his videos but I agree he doesn’t seem well versed in this stuff. He seems to be just speculating with a nice pair of orange colored glasses. The idea the BIG is going to come calling and have us name our price is absurd. There is potential something gets work out with the BIG 12 to make all the legal stuff go away and ensure the P5 goes to P4. The most likely outcome is we hang out in the PAC 2 for a year or 2 and see how the landscape changes while supplementing the loos of a media deal with PAC 12 assets.

I think tempering expectation would be a good idea to avoid disappointment.

      • Yeah the name your price/high leverage stuff is absurd. If anything, they might just offer us partial share to shut up. Even that’s like 50-50, but probably more probable than I realized given the legal angle has legs.

        • Shows that even old dude’s get the concept of engagement farming?

I’ll take the opinion of an actual esquire over the troll army on the social media platforms playing esquire though, even if he is wearing orange glasses

        • But it’s not absurd.

Being bought into any conference at this point is just admitting the cartelization of college football conferences and their media partners. So I agree that speculation is absurd.

But forcing them to guarantee Tier One linear buys from say, Apple, and guaranteeing the P5 status of the Pac X, in any form, are not absurd.

Your constant negative waves about the MWC are absurd. Think the bridge will be there and it will be there.

    • Well I don’t know, about the hypocrisy part…
I’ve said I would like an actual college system of regional conferences. Would I watch if they end up with cincinnati, yes, I would also watch if the end up in a conference with boise. I don’t think that makes me a hypocrite. I follow beaver sports.

If the beavs end up in a conference with boise and fresneck I’m ok with that, even if the ‘product’ is diminished. I think ending up in a conference with ucf, wva, cincinnati is stupid and bad for the athletes, fans and the products as well.

Either way it just delays the inevitable, when the major players move to a semi-pro set-up the beavs end up on the sideline again anyway.

  60. If we end up in the BIG12 the travel would not be horrible. 7 of the schools would be in the current PAC12 geographic footprint. I would guess there would be 2 9 team divisions so the west would probably pick up Texas Tech and maybe the other OSU. Is it more travel that in the PAC12, yes but it is horrible, no. Its a 2 Hour Plane flight to LA, Its a 3.5 hour plane flight to Texas.

  61. 4
    1

Do the Beavs even want to bother fighting their way into a power conference?
There was a court ruling today that is basically going to make it totally impossible for the NCAA to enforce any type of NIL rules in the very near future.
We could see schools paying athletes directly so they’ll come play for their team. At that point, there is really no parity. The 85 scholarship limit is pointless.

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/2023/09/22/nil-lawsuit-ncaa-granted-class-action-status/70934441007/

    • The whole point of keeping a P5 designation is because it has an auto-berth into the play-offs, as well as guaranteed money distributions.

That they are trying to cut out a large swath of schools is the just of the anti-trust situation. That they do so at the potential health of their unpaid athletic employees will be corrected.

  62. Turn Martinez Loose on the Palouse!

As an aside, Beavs should be exposed to a lot of NFL scouts this year w/the Pac so well stocked with talent and potential. Do you think Martinez will be fast enough for NFL?

  63. It seems like we have 2 complimentary speed receivers for bubble screens and end arounds but no true receiver starting right now. Noga could be a good compliment to them being more of a possession receiver.

  64. Keep seeing a lot of expert picks. Pretty split down the middle. Almost all say it’s a toss up game.

A few taking WSU with the points say it’s the smart bet. They’ll always take a ranked underdog at home

      • That’s not true. The product isn’t a part of the value, except in archival licensing.

I’ve mostly heard Duck honks posit this idea, but it isn’t the reality of a network’s existence.

        • I should say that only two schools providing content would make the network fold, most likely. But simply having the content with a different group does not devalue the network itself.

  65. Damn, Air Force ran over San Jose State.

Fun fact: Air Force has won 10+ games 3 of the last 4 years. All three losses last year were by one possession. They might be a dark horse for a New Years Six bowl game.

  66. Some really good games today.
I think UCLA gets a win at Utah today, Rising will be rusty if he plays.
Oregon probably runs over Colorado and the Deion train gets derailed for the week.
Notre Dame will beat Ohio State by 2 touchdowns.
Ole Miss will beat Alabama by a field goal.
Florida St will roll Clemson by 3 touchdowns.
And Beavs win on the Palouse.

    • Watching Clemson and FSU, and these teams aren’t great. Neither QB has command, and the O-lines are getting no push… not that they can even account for everyone.

FSU’s D just scored, but it’s a pretty boring game.

  67. Clemson looks like a pile of hot garbage and FSU is trying to rise above program mediocrity and win a big game on the road.
Suspect PI in the final few minutes gifts Clemson a big first down.
Dabo may have a coronary by years end.

    • It wasn’t suspect. The DB was just hugging him.

But this is a brutal game. FSU’s QB finally gets a pass within five yards of his WR, and a catch occurs.

      Whodathunkit?

    • Clemson’s last four play-calls have been horrible.

Do they know this is a tie game with less than two minutes left?

Just watching them run out the clock on accident is perhaps the most unaware thing I’ve seen since Paul Wulff was a head coach.

  68. Today is probably the first time in 20 years I’ve actually rooted for UO. I’m not sure how I feel about that, but that’s how much of a buffoon I find Deion Sanders.
