Colorado has always been a joke. People were buying it? I’d rather see them win this game knowing they’re a joke and will get destroyed more often down the line, and knowing Oregon is more legit, but yeah, Colorado will get killed. I can’t believe people believe in Colorado.

Oregon doesn’t look especially dangerous. Looks like a typical Oregon team. Fast, soft, beat up on bad teams. Nix might have taken a step forward, though. He looks more poised. That would make them a bit tougher if true. Won’t know until they play a good team.

      • I like how CU’s LB is twice as big as him, but he tries to strip the ball, instead of tackling him, so he just keeps running for 15 more yards while this dude is busy playing with his arms.

    • Their Oline took a step back but they’ve upgraded big time at receiver, and their receivers can actually block.

Still think we match up fairly well with them because we’re deep at defensive end and outside linebacker but damn, wish Austin did not turn pro.

  3. I’m sure the ACC is excited about the stellar performance of their new members this season. SMU goes down big to TCU for another loss.

The Duff’s are being exposed…..Hunter won’t change todays outcome. Our offense and rushing will break their spirit, just like we are watching vs Nike. The Fucks are legit, will be a hell of a game this year. We will have to bring our A game.

I expect OSU to impose their will in Pullman today. Corrections will be made from last week and we should see the offensive playbook hopefully open more this week.

DJU and the WR room/Velling will hopefully settle down into a good rhythm. The consistency is the most concerning issue. Windows are there for plays to be made, but delivery timing and accuracy is such a variable this year.

Still think we are in a better universe at QB than last year.

Beavs will roll today and exercise some demons that have plagued us in Pullman.

A few things we all knew being shown today:
      -Sanders all hat, no cattle
      -swoosh fans delusional, and obnoxious
-Utes show there’s still room for tough guy football

    • I thought last week made it obvious, that the Buffs (who were lucky to beat what’s going to be a bad or at best a mediocre Go5 team) were not going to be competitive against the top of the P-12. Of course, the media hype machine had to drag this out as long as possible. Wins against ASU and Stanford probably and I’m thinking that’s it. Sure, a big improvement from last season, but do the “experts” who were talking playoffs and crap know anything about O and D lines?

Hilarious that Deion ran 85 guys out of town for that first half.
Sideline reporters should ask him if he still believes…

Nice half by Ducks, helping all of college football today in some odd irony that they are destroying the one team with more arrogance and hubris than themselves.

    • On previous thread some were making the difficult decision to pull for ducks today. For the record….Not Me. Took the under on 9.5 season wins, still not sure today proves a lot about them; we’ll have to wait for that stretch next month vs Huskies then Cougs then Utes.

Of the game today in Pullman, Wilner says, “This Saturday is about every Saturday for years to come.”

“People can watch these teams and say, ‘They play like power conference schools, but they aren’t going to be a part of it, really?” an industry source said. “So in that case, what does it really mean to be a Power Five school? These teams aren’t, but Vanderbilt is. Boston College is. So what am I missing?”

Didn’t Lanning say there had been too many penalties and anyone who drew a flag was not gonna play?
Halfway through the 3rd and his boys have 6 for 60 yds…..anyone sitting?

I feel like Oregon should have won by more. If anything this game is bearish for the ducks. Colorado is a 6 win team. Coaching is so bad…couldn’t even figure out a draw play.

    Go Beavs!
Concerned about covering the underneath passes. San Diego State was killing us in the fourth quarter with underneath crossing routes and we could not cover them. If we don’t do this against Wazzu, it could be a long evening.

  10. studentbeaver left the Civil War last year at halftime.

Are we in the first quarter still? Or is the game called after 2 touchdowns? Cmon JS teams have resilience and don’t give up.

    • Clarify what “street ball” means. He seems like a prototypical QB. Stays in the pocket and isn’t much of a runner, so I’m confused what “street ball” is even supposed to mean here

I’m obviously gonna get hate for this, but we really got to question how invested we become in this pathetic program, whether it be the 30+ year losing season streak, now to the letdowns of last year and this. Is it really worth the mental exhaustion of mediocre or terrible seasons for years on end only so we can have a 10+ win every few decades? Now with us likely going to a lower conference, it will only get worse as our recruiting will suffer.

  12. Every route is covered. When all your recievers are covered on play action then the other staff has all your offensive tendencies dialed in. Better pound the ball on the ground . Beavs can run at will even with 8 in the box.

  13. This is the worst secondary performance I can remember in a long time. Cam Ward has huge windows to throw to on every single throw. This is a Tibesar looking defense. They look shocked and unprepared. Hard to believe they look this atrocious

  14. We just need to consistently pressure them and force a bad throw or a fumble like we just did. Our secondary can’t stop them so pressuring the QB is the only way. Happy with the offense but why on our first drive did we take Martinez out after such a good play. Love Fenwick but he should only be in there when Martinez needs a break.

  15. Coaching staff really dropped the ball in recruiting when it comes to wide receiver. These dudes are a complete non factor. DJ is gonna get blamed but none of them are getting open and can’t make contested catches. 4th and 7 and they were manhandled. It’s absolutely killing the passing game

    • WSU’s D is jamming the pygmy WRs and blanketing them. While Bray’s D is letting their WRs run free .

The Dline has nothing on WSU’s O line.

  16. 4

I’ve been less than impressed with DJU’s mobility in and to get out of the pocket. He just sort of lumbers around and hasn’t been a threat to run. Heck, Gulbranson made more of an effort to extend plays and get out of the pocket last year.

  17. Time for bray to earn his paycheck and make some adjustments. Seems like their Oline is getting away with some holding. No wonder we can’t get to him.

  18. Ward has a legit chance to throw for 600 yds. This is starting off worse than even some of the bad showings against the Leach years. Only 1 incompleteness? That’s crazy. 300yds. 4td. Embarrassing.

Also, why aren’t we running some screens? Their D is going all out…gotta sprinkle a few screens in just to keep them honest. Is this the claasic Lingren game where he calls several great games and then just decides to lay an egg with the headscratching play calls?

  19. Still time to come back by running the ball, dominating time of possession, and keeping their offense off the field. Beavs win 43-42 after scoring last second TD to tie but go for 2 and the win.

  20. Good Lord, has Wazzu improved that much in one year? Looks like a lot of the improvement is with the O-line. Ward has been able to do whatever he wants with no pressure. DJ has a cannon, but I’m becoming less and less impressed with the speed of his decision-making. He needs to take off and run sometimes.

  21. Their O line is really killing us.

Let’s see if Bray and D can make some halftime adjustments

Offense just needs to run it down their throats.
It could all fall apart or could be just like game against the ducks last year

  22. Imperative that we score on our first drive. Need to pressure Ward. Seems like we lost our identity with utilizing the TE’s. I still believe we can win but god damnit I don’t wanna see anyone but Martinez in the backfield.

  23. Bray has been good at second half adjustments let’s see what he dials up…still have to overcome poor tackling, miscommunication and poor coverage though

Still dominating with the run game but aren’t going to stay even in a shoot out

Blown coverages, poor tackling , stupid penalties can’t continue

  24. 4

Crazy idea. Put Chiles in and use DJ as a Jack Colleto type throwing here and there / feed Martinez.

    I’m also high.

But it’s reducing how pissed I am so yeaaaaah.

  25. 4

DJ needs to be pulled sadly. He processes too slowly and has no pocket presence. Too sad when it seemed he may be a difference maker.

Fools gold I guess. You won’t have many more chances to hold them and stay within 2 scores now.

Perhaps Chiles or BG can jump start the offense. Lindgren is panicking, why no screens or slants? Of DJ can’t make the slant throw against pressure, how can you leave him in?

  26. 4
    1

Can we remove Lindgren for dereliction of duty? Malpractice? Did he lose the playbook that has the running plays? Why is he just calling these long developing routes? I mean, he shouldn’t be passing the fucking ball at all but definitely not the long developing plays. It’s ridiculous

  27. 1
    2

So are we still happy with all hand holding feel good Cougs and Beavs in solidarity going into this game? Beavs got soft and are showing it today.

  28. It is simple. OSU got out coached, not ready to play. Poor play calling and defense was not prepared. DJ is not the answer. It is Chiles time.

  29. Beavs offense had a short field at the end of first half after but WSU finished the half with a TD.
Beavs offense had the ball to begin the 2nd half, but couldn’t move the ball, then had another chance
And stil couldn’t move the ball,
WSU pulls a fake punt deep in their territory and turns it into a quick TD. Feels like ballgame and the offense has lost focus and began looking to DJ to be a hero which is not the strategy.

  30. Offense and play calling has laid the egg this game. Yes defense struggled first half, but have made appropriate adjustments. Only 14 points on offense at this point does not cut it

  31. With this matchup felt like the expected loss. I think going forward and the matchups we have still a great chance to put a good run together

  32. Such a frustrating game to watch. DJ isn’t really any better than BG in this type of game and the Cougs offense seems to have open routes everywhere. Kind of feels like the Eastern Washington game about 10 years ago when Kupp was wide open all over the place.
It comes down to a confident and decisive qb who is accurate and on time. DJ seems a bit slow and not too confident which is a recipe for disaster.
WSU hasn’t really respected the deep pass and hasn’t seen anything else but varieties of power run. No fly sweep, no tight end, no slant, no bubble screen, no tunnel screen, no delay draw. What is in the playbook if it has been opened up?
Kind of a sad night. It seems like the Beavs just got punched in the mouth out of the gate and never got back up. They’ve been trying to compete but the first punch made them groggy and slow throughout the whole contest.
Not sharp at all. Is Martinez hurt? Is Gould on the field? Does Bolden have a run?

  33. 1
    8

DJ Ooh Eee Ooh Ahh Ahh Ting Tang Walla Walla Bing Bang looks like he is a very good 7 on 7 passing league QB but forgot about the part of playing actual tackle football.

He could still turn into a serviceable arena-league QB

  34. Why aren’t the receivers running go routes? Every time when it looks like they have a step or two they run a post or flag route and lose their separation.

  35. Tons of missed opportunities and missed plays and down 10 at this point. I think there are adjustments to make going forward but far and away not all is lost. Shoot bonked field goal that went in and it would be one score game. Add in the fake punt

    • Did it? If they kicked it deep, do you think Wazzu wouldn’t have drove down the field on them anyway? They were gonna need an onside at some point anyway and their defense couldn’t stop a nose bleed. Seemed like it was worth a risk. JS was in a tough spot. Either lets the defense continue to get manhandled or try and get the ball back. It didn’t work. It happens. If the defense showed a pulse tonight, they wouldn’t have been in that position.

    • It was too early to onside kick it, but maybe that says something about Smith’s confidence in the defense. A long drive by Wazzu effectively ends the game. Dickert should have kicked the FG too, a risky decision that almost backfired on him.

  36. Fuck I thought we got that! Never seen an inside like that but it’s easier to see it on the ground rather than in the air on a bounce I suppose…

  37. 12
    2

Cougs played well at home, Beavs played poorly and made too many mistakes and still had a chance at the end. Not the end of the world.

  38. It was weird seeing a Beav defense look completely clueless for a big part of the game. I think the players they lost were more impactful than we thought given the level of non-conference competition. The D played incredibly last year against some talented offenses, even when Utah scored 42, that was mostly on Nolan and all his interceptions.

  39. 3
    7

My updated take on the year:

Losses to: Wazzu, Utah, UCLA, UW, Oregon, and possibly Colorado being a road game at elevation.

Penix and UW will absolutely tear this secondary to shreds.

Pathetic showing, and the whole program should be ashamed of themselves.

  40. 16
    1

Outcoached and outplayed. Hard to find positives in a 21 point 4th quarter when it feels like a lot of that was fraudulent compared to what the other 45 minutes showed us. Plenty of questionable coaching decisions throughout. Plenty of player mistakes as well. Not converting the 2nd fumble into 7 to tie the game before half felt like it changed the game. The fake punt sealed it. Committed to the pass when we needed run and vice versa. Big mental lapse penalties at horrible times. No getting around it that this is a bad performance and loss, even if WSU turns out to be a great team this year.

Now Smith finds himself in the exact same position as last year. A 3 point conference opening loss followed by a game against a highly ranked Utah team. If Cam Rising plays, he won’t be 100% and it’ll be his first game of the season. The schedule opens up pretty nicely after that…

The loss today understandably can send us all into panic mode, but a win on Friday suddenly changes everything. I’d hold off on harsh criticisms of Smith until that game plays out. Lose that one and I think he has to be questioned as a coach in a big picture sense (uncertain future of the program aside).

  41. 2
    3

I’m more bummed about the 35 bucks I spent on stream package for the month in case the team decided to do something this year tbh. Should’ve stayed away from this stuff like I did last year oops.
Congrats to WSU, but I expect them to coug the season when they have to start playing decent teams on the road. Dunno

  42. 15

Student Beaver is absolutely correct. This is a 7-5 team at best. Cal, AZ, Stanford only games we may win. Possibly Colorado. Will lose all other games.

  43. 6
    1

Our secondary is not good. Aside from the coverage issues, they tackled like shit. Looked like the Tibesar Beavs out there. We lost too many guys from last year and the injury to Thomas is looking like the major blow I thought it would be. This wasn’t an off night for them, it’s just a so-so secondary. Lindgren play calling didn’t do them any good either. I just don’t get why he hates getting 7 yards a pop on the ground to then throw the ball 6 or 7 times in a row and have back to back 3 and outs. The long pass plays aren’t working. If he wants to throw the ball, we need to work on the quick slants, more creative screens to the TE and WR. More roll-outs. It’s his MO though, does this 3-4 times a year.

We pray for Rising to still need another week before he’s back. Penix could throw for 600 yds. We hope UCLA hasn’t started to click. Our hardest games just got harder seeing this secondary.

  44. 5
    13

I think Student Beaver is right. Every time people start getting their hopes too high with the Beavers they lose. Gotta keep those expectations low.

    • studentbeaver never said any such thing.

He said he wasn’t impressed. He said he feels like we won’t win some games. he’s projected some midland records, without any substance.

You can fuck off with your attempt to realize his passive-aggressive trolling.

  45. 8
    1

Knee jerk reaction from seeing this game in person. DJ is not the guy but this game was lost by D, play calling, and small receivers that absolutely can’t get separation and aren’t strong enough to complete catches. Play of game was fake punt. Second biggest play was sack that didn’t happen. Finally, the overthrow to Martinez on 4th down. Make any one of those plays and Beavs could have won. Also got to give Cougs credit. They played great. Ward is legit. Receivers are very good. Well coached. We have serious issues but still had a chance to win against Cougs best. We played poorly FS

  46. Why have they been trying to lean into the passing game so heavily these last few games when we are so poor at it overall? Honestly it could be smart for us to convert to a service academy style triple option offense.

  47. 6
    2

All is not lost even after such a dreadful outcome.

WSU showed that they will be a tough out for everyone too.
One loss doesn’t end the season but Beavs need to even the score with Utah next week and build from there. There is a good chance that everyone will get a loss along the way based on how strong the conference is right now.

Even ASU has USC struggling tonight.

JS will hit reset with the team and learn from Wazzu but it was a disappointing showing for sure.

    • Friday makes the season.

Utah has always been the mountain we need to climb. It’s why @Wazzu was a trap we stepped in.

Rising has been practicing without limitations, but it’s not clear Whit is making him available. He could just be that rusty.

But we’ll see what happens on After Dark.

  48. Safe to say that I don’t think a whole lot of players on defense are going to transfer out of the program if we move to the Mountain West.

  49. 11

    Post game thoughts..
First of all, I thought it was a classy move for Cougs to play the OSU fight song b4 the game. Also, hats off to their crowd for creating a fun and tough environment. Lots of PAC2 signs. I truly believe this is a win if played at Reser. Best of luck to our brothers to the north this season.

The DEFENSE: This could be a precursor to future games if we don’t get consistent pressure on QB. I believe I heard announcers say Ward had over 7 seconds to throw on one of his TDs.
Also, felt a little like watching “The Fugitive” there with the -one handed man- making multiple amazing catches. So much respect to Josh Kelly and his talents.
The D did create 2 turnovers which helped start the comeback. But for a lot of the game it felt like our d couldn’t hang with their o. Too many blown assignments that dug a hole too large to climb out of.

The OFFENSE: Once again could’ve benefited from running a bit more. Fenwick looked great! For whatever reason, some of the plays just seemed off. I noticed, QB1 is a little slow on throwing motion. I think that contributes to some tip passes and also just a hair late on some throws. His strong arm does buy him a little time, but if he wants to go pro he’ll need to get a little faster. Also, missed a wide open receiver by throwing to a different receiver. I also was hoping they would’ve tried a reverse or something just to mix it up a bit. With all the negatives on Offense. He led an amazing 98 yd drive late in the game and gave the team one last chance to pull it out. Probably need to be more creative with Tight Ends. If our receivers can’t create separation, the tight ends might be able to line up against the DBs and create some mismatches that way.

Which leads to Special teams..Wow, had 2 plays that went the cougs way. Fake punt was a back breaker. I was thinking, fake was a more effective way to go for it on 4th down instead of the way we tried a couple times. Also, the Janakowski kick that hit the upright and went through. We lost by 3 so that was a game winner. He also missed one earlier in the game.

Lastly, this game ‘felt’ like it was over from the moment the cougs threw the bomb on opening series. The cougs came out more focused, and really executed well on offense. They outcoached us too. We had 2 fourth down attempts that I didn’t like.

Even though we lost, it was great to see the team fight til the end. So close to recovering that onside kick and could have very easily stolen that game. I’m not a big ‘moral victory’ guy but the team has a chance to learn from this.

  50. 5

    Re-watched game, this morning.

Props to Wazzu. That second play put us on our heels and we took the better part of the first half to figure it out.

Well played by them. The Kevin Falk curse lives on.

Also props to Dickert for calling out ESPN (while talking on FOX) for trust actions.

The positives for us are that we are now contenders. The team figured it out one drive too late. And that one drive was killed by the same rookie ref who was calling linemen downfield on screen passes. I get it. Fuaga is a future All-Pro rag-dolling defenders. You’re going to see a lot of that this year. Get used to it. But don’t punish the man because he does it closer to you than the Wazzu linemen, who were doing the same thing all game.

Overall, this was a really good game. Both teams proved to be contenders. It’s too bad for Wazzu that they have to play both at the University of Phil and at Seattle. But they don’t have USC or Utah.

I thought it was crazy to think the 2Pac rematch could be the CCG, come December. But it just got real.

  51. 5
    2

I don’t know how you can call that a really good game. That was one of the worst defensive efforts I have seen in the last 30 years, including the Gary Anderson teams! We were out schemed and they have better talent! Call it like I see it and the final score doesn’t indicate how bad of a mismatch this game was.

The one and only positive was we fought to the end and I commend them for that!

    • 2
      1

If the Beavers, by your estimation…

Had one of the worst defensive efforts in the last 30 years

      Out schemed

Played against a team with better talent

      Were mismatched

      Yet, fought to the end…

And we lost by just 3?

      That’s a winnable game.

    • Mike, I think it is just how the game has morphed with these spread offenses. Not all that uncommon for 1,000 yards of total offense in a 55-52 game. Not stopping the clock now will curtail those totals a little bit, I think.

  52. So which teams don’t have elite wide receivers who make crazy catches regularly?
UW, WSU, Colorado, USC, Oregon, even ASU has a guy catching everything.
Not so sure about Utah, OSU, Cal, UA, UCLA or Stanford.

Perhaps this factor is the Rosetta Stone of how the Beavs fare this season. And the major miss from the off season was not finding a transfer wide receiver or 2. How does WSU get those 3 starting wide receivers in one offseason but OSU can’t find a wide receiver?

    • 3
      3

CU? USC are okay, but we won’t play them again for a decade or so.

The University of Phil has Franklin. He isn’t making special catches, so much as he’s just open all game long and has a QB who loves playing catch with him.

UW has a serious WR room. But their defense is soooo bad.

You know you’re getting old when you keep thinking USC is being challenged by an ASU team in disarray, led by a high school kid.

  53. 15
    1

The loss was hard but what was even harder was to see the forum high-jacked by studentbeav. Why is anyone even responding to him. Ignore him and talk game.

I love DJ as a kid but what I’ve noticed is he moves slower than the other Pac12 QB’s.
Our defense secondary just isn’t that good. At least not yet.
They were stacking the box but we still ran on them.

4th quarter offense played good on hurry up. This game had me worried because of our secondary and the fact Ward and his receivers are that good and I know how bad they wanted this game. I’m actually not surprised we lost… disappointing as it is.

  54. 2
    2

The only thing that really stings about this loss is it makes us the second best team in a conference of two. Yeah, we want to stand in solidarity with the Cougs but we also wanted to be better than them. That’s not the case…at least not at this point in time this year. Still lots of football left to play this year.

  55. If I had to re-watch the game, I don’t think I could watch the fake punt, such a killer. Also, it didn’t feel like a 3 point game – maybe due in part to the difference between Wazzu’s explosiveness vs. Smith’s slow and steady approach. It was good to see the Beavs not panic and continue to go about their business. Kinda ironic that the two Coug receivers who did all the damage were Mountain West transfers. Finally, credit to WSU – much improved and obviously fired up. Don’t remember the D on their heels like this since Bray took over.

  56. 3
    1

Thought the Cougs played almost a perfect game – except for the two fumbles. They made plays in all three phases if the game. They were by far the better team yesterday and deserved to win. As OOS mentioned above score did not reflect how the Cougs controlled most of the game by at least two possesions. But the Beavs are pretty resilient undet Smith. Biggest disappointment was Brays defense. They threw the ball at will. Couldn’t cover the receivers or generate much pass rush. When we did cover, Ward through a dime or their receivers made a high light catch. We better get this fixed or it will be a long season. Also I’ll say it again, we REALLY need some tall lanky receivers.
I think (hope) Utah will be a better match up do yo their style of play. Not looking forward to Colorado, UW, UO and other teams that sling it all over the field.

  57. Until we stop a high octane offense I’m worried. I’m worried about CU scoring 45 points through the air. Travis Hunter should be back also. Yeah their lines aren’t great and we should be able to run the ball, they have shown the ability to score quickly. I know, its a long season.

  58. 4

Agree with BeaverPride and ZonaBeav on their general assessments. Was there in person, Coug fans were pretty cool, voiced support for Beavs, a few shook my hand, said “Go Beavs!”….very positive comments from several fans. Listened to their radio post game, and a Coug fan called in and said he hoped the Beavs and Cougs would win out and meet in the PAC championship game.

As usual, no one play lost the game. “The sack that wasn’t” would have put the Cougs out of field goal range, that could have been 3 fewer points…the Coug kicker bounced one in from the upright… That dumb 4th and 1 pass to Martinez looked familiar. Didn’t Beavs try that last year? On the flip side, it was there. If DJ makes that catchable, Martinez has a LOT of room in front of him. But hell, run your 245 lb QB up the middle for a yard…

RE DJ, I supposed you could make the argument he was asked to do the wrong things at Clemson and he was distracted by personal issues, and he now isn’t yet on the same page with his receivers and will come around. But I suspect he’s not going to become consistently more accurate this season. I would be happy for him to prove me wrong.

How about giving Noga, Muyagi, maybe Valsin(?) reps on the outside? They may not have Gould and Bolden’s 40 times, but maybe they can still get separation and catch, particularly if DJ tends toward high passes.

The game didn’t feel as close as the score. It was disappointing that the Beavers never once led in the game. Overall, good environment, pretty classy fans for the most part. I obviously would have loved a more competitive game and Beaver victory, but they were out-coached and outplayed.

    • 1
      1

All the WSU penalties at the end of the game were pretty obviously a result of their DB’s not being able to our handle our speed at WR. That is one advantage of having the small fast guys, even if they have small catch radii.

  59. 2
