That’s the best drive of the year. Great play calling. I liked it all except goulds end around to the short side of the field. I hate that were forcing a speedster to make those hard cuts into the boundary.

  2. Not one shot of the crowd yet and it looked like the endzones were tarped over. I wonder if they’re piping in crowd noise?

  3. Also helped he isn’t playing Utah’s defense again. plus, the first snap he had last week he bobbled and put OSU in a hole to start that drive.

JS already getting bored with this game. Fucking can take the gambler off the boat, but can’t take boat out of the gambler.

  5. Haha backup QB in his first start can run all over us? Seen that episode before…it’s ok they can’t stop our offense if we don’t shoot ourself in the foot.

  6. Why does this staff continually make these dumb fuck calls? I get in year 1-3 you might’ve needed to make those calls to spark something but it’s just going to cost you football games now. So frustrating that year 5 we’re seeing these bonehead fucking calls.

  7. Well this is all going to Lingren’s an to avoid running the ball. Now that we’re behind he can throw the ball 12 straight times.

This team will never get to the next level if they can’t get over crapping the bed on the road like they have the last few seasons.

  9. Stupid and sucky in general, but these moments provide opportunities to learn how to come back from being down on the road. As “safely” as you can create such a scenario. Much like giving Chiles a TD throw from just outside the endzone.

  10. Props to DJ and Jack there, nice play. I just hate not taking the points this early with 2mins left in the half. That kinda shit will cost us against teams not named Cal.

  11. Should have kicked it. Fortunate to have scored and not given momentum back to Cal.

Great throw by DJ btw. He’s playing much better this week.

  12. Oh so NOW Smith will be ultra conservative and not call a timeout? I can’t remember a worse coaching half for him since the 2nd half of Hawaii in 2019.

  13. On a positive note, couple errors but our offense looks really good tonight. Especially since has a decent defense and we’re on the road.

Hope the defense can settle in in the 2nd half.

  14. Good to have the lead at halftime, but my god.

2 plays that stick out. The Bolden fumble and the degenerate gambler calling for an onside kick up 14-3.

You just let Cal back in the game by giving them a short field twice.

Beavs are clearly the better team. Stop stepping on your own dicks in the 2nd half and put these ass clowns away.

DJU looking much better this game too

    • Sometimes the Beav coaches are too clever for their own good. The Cal player was lined up 15 yards back on the kickoff and maybe they saw that on film from a previous game. But two issues, there was no need for an onside kick at that point in the game and second, it was a shitty onside kick which isn’t that easy to do anyway.

  15. That was some shockingly shitty tackling by the defense, right? Maybe we were a little too nonchalant about Rawls and Hart Jr being out?

    • I think our defense is just OK. Not good. Not bad but definitely not top of the conference like we thought. WSU carved us up. I think Colorado will throw for a buttload of yds. UCLA isn’t going to be easy.

This team really needs to step it up when they’re on the road if they want to accomplish anything more than the LA Bowl or Las Vegas Bowl.

Cal sputters. Beavs churn. Depending on the moment in time, either might be ahead. I think we’re favored well tonight though.
Smith burns us only when sabermetric, risk-aversion tactics fall on the backside of the curve.

  18. I do like the playcalling so much better this game. Love getting the TE involved. Velling is legit and we underutilized him until tonight. DJ seems very comfortable and confident tonight. Several of his tosses have been under duress and he’s been spot on up to this point. Have a feeling defense is optional this game and whoever makes a mistake in the 2nd half will lose.

Agreed. Was not very late at all getting to him… maybe they are thinking he went to high on the tackle? No fucking clue, PAC ref’s strike again

  19. Did we think we’d just come in here and play soft and easily walk out with a win? It’s like we expect to win but don’t feel it necessary to actually play sound football.

Its infuriating this game would be like 42-10 if they just got the fuck out of their own way. The coaching and risk taking is making an easy win into something they’ll likely blow. Why do I watch this team? Just play the game as its given to you.

  21. I almost feel like it’s watching sabermetrics. Coaching keeps looking for whatever play is highest percentage for winning, but that strategy doesn’t lend to cohesion.

  22. After Martinez crosses into the end zone, it looked like the defender lowered his head and went helmet to helmet to knock Martinez on his but. Doesn’t even get a 2nd look.
Never understand why targeting never gets called when the RB takes the punishment?

  23. Liking the young secondary we have. Noble Thomas. Skyler Thomas. McCoy. Joe Swen is supposedly been very good in the camps. Could be helpful if Julian goes for a medical year.

    • Fenwick seems to be having a lot of fun out there. I’m a little concerned about Martinez, at times something seems to be a little off this year. Body language maybe.

  24. I almost want to say that Fenwick has been better than Martinez this year so far, at least in conference play. Doesn’t have as many TD’s, but he has been more consistent.

  25. I hope our defense learns how to tackle this week again. UCLA has defense and they will have offense if we don’t tackle. Their running back Steel looked good today.

    • On point, they were bumping runners thinking it would be easy. Cal did a good job bouncing off of “tackles” and keep running. They had some possible tackles for loss that turned out to be large gains. The defense must have thought Cal was an easy win and just bump.

Was it Joe Golden who said after Utah that we wouldn’t see the OSU defense play as bad as they did against WSU again this year? So much for that. The way this defense plays on the road, they’re going to get shredded by Arizona, Colorado, and Oregon. Offense will likely need to put up 40+ in those games to have a chance.

  27. 43 runs and 28 passes it seemed opposite again.
Gould 7rec 117yd. Good to see him pick it up, except that drop in the end zone.

  28. Still waiting for a complete game from both the offense AND defense.

Bolden was great on KO returns tonight.

Best game passing from DJU so far.

    Veiling was a beast.

Road D is still concerning. Yikes

    What did I miss?

  29. Smith might be pretty reckless with his play calling decisions sometimes but he’s no Cristobal.

What a brutal way for Miami to lose.

  30. as stupid as some play calls were in the Beavs game, Zona decides to throw long with 3 plus minute left vs. SC, tie game, on first and ten from the SC 40. pass incomplete. they had been gashing SC with the run game. could have driven to the goal line for chip shot field goal, but no, they throw long. Even if the pass had been completed that play makes no sense as you leave SC 3 plus minutes to tie it up.

  31. Arizona just missed a 50 yd fg with 2min left tie game. ISC getting a lot of phantom flags in their favor just to get them
Back in the game Glad to see them go. Totally cheating approach with refs favoring them and oline holding every play.

  32. I’m starting to think the D is just not going to be as good as last year because the talent that left has not been replaced. The D didn’t really have a WTF game all last year. Utah only scored 42 because of all the interceptions. So far two out of six games have been WTF and I think there are more to come. Nice to see the offense make a leap, they are going to be needed.

  33. Great game by DJU (finally) and Lindgren (mostly), love seeing the improvement over the course of the past few weeks. Reason to be pretty concerned with the D, they look like a different unit week-to-week, Johnson got burned real bad a few times. Same old criticisms of JS being overly aggressive seemingly for the sake of being so that could have cost them the game if CAL were just a bit better. That sequence where they had them stopped, but then went after the punt and gave up 30 yards in dumb penalties and handed them a TD was just brutal.

Can’t beat the Hodgins TD and celebration dance lol.

    • USC is the most talenter pile of dog crap I’ve seen.
They’ll likely lose 2 or 3 games the rest of the way as their schedule get much tougher finally.

      • Not if the refs can help it. Unbelievably biased calls/ non calls just to get USC back in the game.
Fisch looks like a cartoon character accountant, he should have gone for 2 after the first OT touchdown. Silly to think you might have a better chance to win than that opportunity.

These oldies on the post game show Lolol.

We won. Apparently bitching about the onside kick call is just sour grapes. Too much negativity.

Can these people just die already?

Can’t demand a competent coaching staff I guess.

Up 14-3 it was a HORRIBLE call.

Against a better team that shit can lose a game.

  35. Post game thoughts:
Always take the road win no matter how the game seems to progress.
DJU looks like he is setting into the offense.
The defense has questions but both starting corners were out, plus Hart and Rawls out for a while. Bray is doing work creating depth in the midst of some injuries.
Special teams nearly wrecked the game but Beavs are resilient and don’t panic.
JS needs to explain what Cookus was thinking with the onside kick and why it was attempted.
Tackling is concerning sometimes but the defense did create key turnovers.
    Kudos to Lindgren.
No turnover for DJU is nice.
UCLA will be challenging, Arizona may be tougher than UCLA. Beavs must stay focused or they could lose both.

    • Goss got ’em…….works for baseball. Same seems to apply with Reser; the difference between UCLA and Zona may come down to being home for only one of them.

      • The commentators were making a big deal about the Cal receiving player being 15 yards back. Is that an unusual way to line up? I haven’t paid much attention to how receiving teams place their front players. I mentioned above that Smith is too clever for his own good and I think this is an example. It was not needed at that point in the game, the success rate is low (saw a study that pegged in at a little under 25%) and the execution was shitty.

    • Radio broadcast said he had his ankle taped. Was still holding his helmet but didn’t come back in, instead Voltin did when Levengood went out briefly.

  36. I thoroughly enjoyed reading through the ups and downs of the game. Watching the game at a bar makes the game a much different experience. A lot more even keel reactions. A good team wins when one side of the ball is struggling and other half picks them up.

Ott is a real one. Would have been great in the Beavs offense.
Offense was just super efficient. DJU didn’t have many tough throws and the ones he had, he threw it where only his guy could get it.
OL was a big part in that as DJU didn’t have to rush many throws. Lots of clean pockets.
Chiles getting a successful series in probably doesn’t factor in if he transfers out next year. But if he sticks around, Beavs have a playmaker.
Fat guy touchdowns never get old. Guarantee Hodgins was calling his brother after the game. Worked on that dance for a bit.
Beavs showed a lot of variations on offense where opponents will have a lot of prep for. Lot less vanilla

UCLA defense looked really good vs WSU. Probably looking at a Utah like game next week.

Atmosphere should be very loud and inebriated with it being Dad’s weekend and homecoming.

  37. With ND and WSU losses, Beavs should be up to #13 this week.

Root for Miami and ND next week as they’re the most likely teams to beat opponents that are ranked ahead of us.

  38. So hard to predict scores with this coaching staff. Special teams responsible for two easy scores, and at least one other with defensive lapses or maybe being too aggressive on blitz….? Why most of predicted Cal under 20 points….

      • 2
        1

I know, that’s Jekyll coming out, but basically a wash since they fucked themselves on the two major screw ups (onside kick and running into the kicker). If they can avoid one of those fuckups, Beavs win by an additional TD.

  39. PFF notes:
Beavs now up to #9 rated team in the country based on performances to date. Defense got the best rating of the season (which was merely in the “above average” realm, but we’ll take it), with the worst tackling rating of the season. 19 missed tackles! PFF gave Mendoza a really high rating, so their view must be that he just had himself a game and the D mostly did what they could.

    Top 3/Bottom 3:
    Offense

    DJU
    Irish
    Gould

    Munyagi
Starck (this one looks weird because they gave him a really good pass blocking grade)
    Sharp

    Defense:
    Lolohea
    Hodgins
McCoy (props for how he’s stepped up this season when called on)

    Rawls
    Jordan
    Chatfield
(Julian would have been on here, but he didn’t see enough snaps)

    • Somebody I was listening to on the radio last week said OSU is something like bottom 15 in NCAA football when it comes to missed tackles. This game sure didn’t help

      • Not a stat you should be trying to pad

So what’s the difference? Some players left but you’re seeing it from players that were contributors last year

  40. 1

Velling had a night and it was good to see a te making plays again. Should have had that dude on speed dial sooner, his name is JACK!

Velling next in the line of grinders at OSU named Jack? Anderson, Colletto…Velling!

We need to get scouts out looking for the next Jack

    • They won but looked rough at times doing it , at least on defense.

Haven’t looked at who won and lost yesterday, but if beavs don’t move I would expect SC to not move either, hell an argument could be made for them moving down

    • The polls will play itself out as the season goes on. Just win out and we should be top 4. Pac 12 will get SEC type polling this year and a 1 loss team should be in the Top 4.

  41. OSU stays at #15 in the AP poll.

I’m not really surprised. The only team that jumped us is Louisville, who looks like a better team.

A win next week should put us in the top 12.

  42. Would have liked to move up with the win, but the AP poll is the better poll. A lot of wins by teams that weren’t given much credit earlier in the year, look better now. But dang, Utah moves up two spots on a bye week? Next week is huge though. Should be a big TV audience with a 5 p.m. local time start.

  43. Cal came to this game with a good freshman QB who had game, running backs, and coaches with good game plan and didn’t make stupid decisions. They put up way more points than anyone expected but at least one if not two scores were gifted by our stupid coaching decisions.
I know a lot of people were calling for BG or Chiles to take over but I’m glad coaches have given DJU enough slack to get it together. He looked great even if Gould had one of his failed to catch instances. Bolden is a beast but scares me when he gets into traffic and is holding the ball with just one hand. Irish looked great as well. Hopefully this game is the coming together on all fronts for our offense.
I’m not a fan at all of the throw Chiles in on the third series of the game regardless of score and game flow. I know it worked yesterday but I think it is poor coaching to just have it as “we are doing this regardless” as the reason verses a strategic timing. I feel it throws off the flow and is huge gamble by the gambler.
I’m a little baffled by our defense. We all bitched about poor tackling before Bray stepped in and then saw better tackling after Bray took control. What happened? New guys? Fear of targeting? Friday night rave party?
My worry for UCLA is their running back Steel is a run you over type back and if we can’t learn or re-learn to tackle this week we are in deep caca next weekend.
Good news is we are at home and for UCLA I’m not sure they are that confident in themselves yet. I think we win UCLA at home but I don’t have a clue how because I don’t have a clue which OSU team will show up next weekend…. Let’s hope we get the offense that played Cal and the defense that played against Utah.

I think they are giving Chiles the first series of the 2nd quarter because they want to develop him and get him experience in case they need him to step up in the event that DJU goes down with an injury or poor performance. Based on JS’s comments, it feels much more thought out and in the interest of developing Aiden and cultivating team culture than it does like gamblin’. Can’t help but notice that it has seemed like DJU has played with better focus, decision making, and confidence knowing that Aiden is getting the playing time he needs to develop and replace him ala Klubnik if he struggles like he did last year. Seems like it’s worked as intended so far.

More concerned with the continued high-risk special teams decisions that simply don’t make sense in the context of how the game is unfolding. Re-watching the game today and there’s just no reason to go for the onside kick or blocked punt in those situations unless it’s because you are committed to being hyper-aggressive as part of your “identity”. Get a stop on defense and it could have easily been 21-3 heading in at half time or 42-17 heading into the 4th quarter if they just take what is being given. I liked the aggressive calls in JS’s first couple years when they were way behind the talent curve, but doesn’t makes sense with where the team is at now.

    • The missed tackles are annoying but they’re not like GA-era tackling. That short Cal RB had 4000 career yards and could get leverage on anyone.

If we’re going to miss tackles, at least we’re slowing down the ball carrier and swarming. Pursuit and angles are not an issue with this defense.

      • There was way too much trying to strip the ball then actual tackling.

Putting Chiles in on a planned possession is just stupid. It has to depend on how the game is going instead of automatically putting him in on a series.

        • Idk about the Chiles thing.

He goes in with a script, and DJ gets to go over the info from the game, thus far. DJ then goes back with a fresh script, before halftime, and more adjustments can be made at the half.

Playing two QBs at a high level can be done. I watched Don James do it. I would not advise doing it like Lloyd Carr did, however. The starter needs to know the plan, not wonder if they’re going to play in the second half.

  44. Hypothetically speaking, would you all rather us win out, and slide in to the college football playoff then get demolished in the semi finals on national TV, or would you rather us win out or maybe drop one more, and end up getting either an auto or at large New Years 6 berth, and win that game in dominant fashion?

    • Win a NY6 Bowl in dominant fashion. Would just build on the narrative that OSU isn’t a P5 school and shouldn’t be in P5 conference if they get boat raced in the playoffs.

    • If we can win out by some miracle we can definitely hang with just about anyone. I can’t see us getting smashed if we can somehow beat Oregon Washington and USC. But with one loss I don’t see us getting into it anyway. They would take a 1 loss Ohio state or Michigan before us.

    • Why would we get demolished in the CFP?

We don’t have a history of attaining that level, then folding. If we get there, it’s because we worked for it.

  45. 3
    2

If the Beavs win out, that means they will beat UCLA, UW and Oregon and likely USC also, or UW/Oregon a second time. If that all happens and Beavs sit at 12-1 after conference championship, they belong and don’t need to worry about getting “demolished” by anyone.

Playoffs of course with no hesitation and a Rose Bowl appearance please. Georgia and Michigan seem destined for a matchup but let it play out and make them earn it.
Who do you think would “demolish” the Beavs in the top 25?

    • Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Texas would demolish us in a CFP setting.

Not enough speed in the backend to defend their receivers. They’d get up big and we would have to abandon the run game. Game over halfway through the second quarter.

      • 1
        1

Then why try because we probably play Michigan or Ohio St either way?… Let’s just quit now while we feel good about 5-1…It sounds kind of like the old Riley backers that were afraid to hope and expect greatness. Even if your assessment is close based on rosters and system, you still need to strive for the matchups.

        • Sure, we need to play in a CFP setting. If we do it multiple times, we will get those high school recruits eventually. That’s why I’m for OSU building a 8-team conference with the best of the Mountain West, because that gives us the best chance.

I just accept the reality of what would happen if we’re the 4 seed and have to play Georgia or Michigan. When it does happen a lot of people on this thread will complain that Bray or Smith are not good coaches, when in reality it comes down to a big talent disparity.

      • ?

Penix and Nix will be more challenging offenses, and the hypothetical includes beating them… likely one of them twice.

Teams like UGA, Texas, and Michigan have some formidable D’s in the size department, and OU is just a well-coached D with a lot of talent. But they’re all still college football teams.

  46. Didn’t see game live. Watched this morning. Very happy with performance. D wasn’t great but did some things I liked and most mistakes are correctable. Like the game plan and play calling but the inside was horrible. Our QB, WRs, RBs, OL, TEs all played great. DL was solid. LBs and DBs not so much but like I said, correctable. If DJU can build off this, I feel a lot better about this team. Expect this team to hit on all cylinders for UCLA.

        • Eh….
I get that they’re trying to bring optimistic news to OSU fans, but having a show where you spend more time talking about how you have “sources” and can’t say anything because you don’t want to burn your sources…..means you don’t have sources.

A source gives you information that you’re allowed to share. They’re not going to give insider info to a group of social media guys unless they want that info shared.

The biggest news from this spaces meetup was a couple guys heard from someone else that some Cougar players started making realignment videos claiming “Cougars will survive in any conference”

And that was about it. Rumored social media videos that nobody has seen are somehow a sign that the Big12 and OSU/WSU are are going to merge.

I appreciate that they’re trying to build up some excitement, but really cant take anything away from what I listened to.

          • To my knowledge nobody on the Twitter spaces is a “journalist” so the word “sources” is not like it would be for a journalist. It’s people know people. The fact that Wazzu folks and OSU folks are hearing the same thing is interesting. Also Barnes staying as OSU and no recruits leaving leads me to think there actually might be something to this. I do know for a fact there have been 2 CFP meetings and they have not been able to change the payout structure. Seems like a lot of smoke to me. We shall see.

        • People who claim to have “inside” knowledge from both Wazzu and OSU are saying a move to a P4 conference will be announced in the coming weeks. Wazzu has already started shooting promotional videos. High likelihood it’s the BIG12 but outside shot it’s ACC. They are having to be very careful with what they release as folks from OSU are trying to track down where the leak of info is coming from. One employee has already been fired for posting info on Twitter.

Barnes was offered the UW AD job but turned it down knowing Beavs are going to land in a P4 conference.

Our attorneys are actually working on 2 fronts. First was the TRO with the PAC-12. That was just to make sure the conference was not dissolved. The other is they are / were working on an antitrust lawsuit against FOX and ESPN. Turns out the attorneys representing OSU are experts in antitrust law and represent the major league baseball players association. Also by suing the PAC-12 none of the CFP business can move forward. WSU president is on the CFP broad of managers and none of the CFP payouts for 24 & 25 be changed without a unanimous vote from the CFP board of managers. The CFP has met twice over the past couple of months but have not been able to move forward changing the payout. As it written now each P5 conference receives a lump sum and the conference then divided among their teams. Having us and Wazzu get 2 years for full conference CFP payments is a problem but they can’t do anything without a unanimous vote. Everything is held up until a home is found for OSU / WSU.

Also both us and Wazzu are telling recruits we are going to end up in the BIG12. That would explain why neither school is losing any of their verbals. Wazzu I believe have actually signed a couple of players over past few weeks.

Bottom line these issues have pushed the networks and other conferences to find us a soft landing spot. Sounds like the soft landing spot will be the BIG12 with a full share. Discovery for the lawsuit begins soon so this has forced everyone to the bargaining table for a quick settlement. Sounds like we should hear something in the next couple of weeks or so.

          • It’s not bullying if it’s more money.

Remember, it’s about the money, not what schools and their alumni/students/athletes want.

          • Who is the photographer who got fired?
He’s got some juicy info if that’s the case. What’s the worst that could happen if he’ shares info now? OSU can’t fire him twice.

What’s the incentive for Schultz to rush into a settlement?
If he holds the cards, he should milk the networks and conferences for all he can get. They can’t do CFP business without his vote? Well fuck em. Take your time and make them squirm. Losing a few recruits because you slow played it for your best overall financial well being is worth it. The recruits will come back, and portal makes freshman recruits worth even less than ever before. Use that big pay day to buy every 4*/5* portal player next year to replace those recruiting losses.
Alot of this just doesnt add up.

Plus all that talk Murphy/Barnes put out there a few weeks back about OSU prioritizing athlete mental health and minimizing travel, etc. Means nothing if we then turn and join the Big12, or even worse the ACC.

If I’m OSU/WSU and I’m arguing anti-trust with the networks, I’d hold out until the networks agree to force the Pac12 teams that are leaving to void their agreements with the Big10/Big12/ACC and come crawling back to the new Pac conference. Except now they must all kiss Kirk Schultz ring before they beg for their conference spot back. And none are allowed to compete for the conference championship for 3 years.

          • A Big 12 move doesn’t invalidate the student athlete mental health talk because there will be half the old PAC in the conference plus BYU. Plenty of western teams to play a divisional matchups+ schedule.

Big 10 would be great, but unlikely.

ACC, on the other hand, would be terrible.

          • A Big 12 move makes sense if several MWC schools also join within a couple years, giving the conference a Pacific Division.

Yormark hires Gloria to run the West, and his brother runs the Conference Network, which will suddenly have broad international distribution, because toys are fun.

          • Think about it.

Who has the power, and why do they have it?

Do TV networks have power, only because they promise to pay money? Or do they have power, because they are the ones who produce the content for distribution?

          • If we merge with the Big 12, it’s because the Conference votes to do so.

So these rumors are assuming the outcome of our suit will be that whoever sits on the CEO Board will have 75% support for this action.

  47. I love how the AP polls have 3 undefeated Big10 teams ranked ahead of the 3 undefeated PAC12 teams. Even in the year of the qb for this conference the fix is already in to some degree. The assumed strength of the 3 top Big10 teams surpasses that of the PAC?

And it is important to keep the top SEC and Big12 team ahead of all PAC12 teams as well, which would explain how Oklahoma somehow jumped 5 PAC12 teams to land at #5…and I see them sneaking Ole Miss closer to top 10 as well in case SEC needs another team to backfill when Alabama loses.

I’d say it is quite arbitrary and rigged for future tv
    Matchup hype.

    • Most of it makes pretty good sense based on SOS and win quality. Georgia is the one team I would say is truly overrated due to their weak SOS, but they’re the defending champs so of course they’re going to get some benefit of the doubt.

Nike, UW, and USC all have pretty weak SOS (especially Nike; they’re ranked #97). tOSU has two top 30 wins and Penn State has one. Oklahoma has a top 10 win now.

Whoever wins UW/Nike next week will be top 5 the following week. If USC beats ND, they will be, too. Penn State will suffer their yearly loss to tOSU in two weeks and drop out. Circle of life.

If you want alternative rankings, look at the Colley Matrix, which is purely based on win quality and SOS: https://colleyrankings.com/currank.html

There are some weird things in there (like Wyoming at #16 and JMU at #12), but this one, which is conference bias-neutral, also doesn’t love the exPAC unbeaten teams.

    • USC has looked increasingly shaky, as if they’re about to fall apart at precisely the wrong part of the season.

Even if they show well at ND (apparently the only rivalry worth USC’s time), the next four games are going to be pretty brutal. I’m going to include Cal in that, because USC’s D is just that bad. If Dante Moore figures it out by the end of the season, USC could be in for a drubbing to end their season.

  48. Re watching of the game, I noticed a lot of smaller things

    – Pac12 refs aren’t corrupt, just incompetent. I can see roughing the kicker but not roughing the passer.
    – On offense, Lindgren needs to get the WRs the ball in space. They can get a lot of YAC on their own. Get Irish the ball with a head of steam and he is gone.
    – Bolden might have had the light click on in the last two games. Running great routes and making plays. Ball security will need to be worked on. Other teams will be going for the strip on him a lot now. Chiles stared him down on the TD throw but he ran such a good route that the defense couldn’t get there. Teams will no longer kick to him.
    – DJU is very strong. Pushed Martinez out of the way when running for the first down.
    – Looks like teams are told to tackle DM and Fenwick at their ankles. They go down pretty quick when it happens. Teams have no shot when tackling above the waist.

Defense – Youth/inexperience really showed up with defense
    – Josiah Johnson had a rough game. Noticed missed tackles, out of position and getting beat. Did have one pass breakup. He was lined up over the TE when Cal threw the wide open TD. He blitzed so not sure where the miscommunication happened.
    – Noble and McCoy do ok in pass coverage but they will to improve in run support.
    – Jordan showed why he is a backup for now. Very aggressive to the point it takes him out of plays. But once he starts to recognize plays, look out. . Fully expect him to to be the starting ILB next year.
    – Zero sacks is troubling against a first time starter

I don’t think there were any significant injuries.

I knew I had seen the TD pass play to Irish somewhere. It was 2012 vs Arizona. 43 second mark.

      • I saw that and then watched the replay. Both were on the other side of the formation. Johnson and Mascarenas blitzed from their side and left the TE uncovered. Hard to tell what the play call was. Whether Johnson was supposed to blitz or stay on the TE, or if Hart was supposed to slide all the way over to cover the TE or were they all lined up out of position. Beavs had 4 defenders on 2 WRs on the nearside and 2 defenders on 2 WRs and the TE on the far side when the play developed.

    • Roughing the P is fine, if one ref hadn’t called a tip ball and Reichle wouldn’t have been visibly complaining, to no avail.

I honestly couldn’t tell in real time that the screen wasn’t his first read on the play to Irish. They set that up well.

    • That play where DJ had to push Martinez was strange. Martinez just sortof ran forward after the fake handoff and just stood there, right in DJs path. He must have expected a pass, but he’s gotta stay engaged in the play in that scenarion rather than assume something else is happening behind him.
I’ve seen other lapses from him with blocking ealier in the season too.

  49. Beavs open as a 4 point favorite at home.

A separate the men from the boys kind of weekend for the PAC12

Fri night – Colorado vs Stanford. Colorado a 11.5 point favorite
UW vs Oregon. UW a 3 point favorite
USC vs Notre Dame. Notre Dame a 2.5 point favorite
Utah vs Cal. Utah a 13.5 point favorite.
WSU vs Arizona. WSU a 8 point favorite
