Oregon State @ San Diego State (Game Week)

To my eyes, McCoy is not a good enough QB to win a game like one, and the team overall didn’t look good enough to win (vs a more established high school level program). Lol. So, I’m going SDSU in this one with them being at home. If Johnson or Gulbranson play a lot in this game, I think our chances go way up and we could win, but I’m going off what I saw last week.

35-20, San Diego State.

The goal of this team is to give the proverbial middle finger to conference re-alignment and bust into the 12-team CFP. That’s the goal that is stated over and over again and I don’t think it’s coach speak, I think they really believe, and this game is a great opportunity to show they mean it.

If they’re going to accomplish that there’s no room for error and they’re treating every game as “must win” to build and improve and gain confidence with and everybody in the building needs to know that and be bought into it, even if fans aren’t convinced yet.

It’s a big matchup problem for their defensive front to stop the Beavs ground game. While on the flip side I like the Beavs D’s chances to combat their hurry up passing attack, so long as they play with the energy, effort, and confidence needed to win on the road. If they show up uninspired on D, they’ll lose, but they’ve got plenty of talent advantage to win.

I understand your pessimism as a coping mechanism angry, but I think this team is a lot better than you’re giving them credit for (McCoy included) and they’ll likely make a fan out of you by the end of the season.

Don’t see this being a blowout either way, but if it is it’s more likely to be in favor of the Beavs. A hard fought defensive win the most likely scenario, or a heart-breaking close loss with some critical mistakes being the limiting factor.

Something like 27-16, football gods willing.

Bray is a different coach and Gundy has shown a willingness to use the strengths first rather than equal opportunity.

Bray will not permit a flat defensive effort. So we don’t need to worry about giving up 30 points to SDSU.
Gundy will commit to the run again and likely Allah will get more carries too.

Talent and focus will prevail. The fumbles won’t happen again and Jam will be on.
I figure the Beavs will show great improvement on defense and even crisper on offense.
Bray has a team that is built to his specs and an offense that is set up to complement Brays defensive mentality.

I actually think we are in the early stages of a Utah/Whittingham type model for this program with Bray at the helm.

Beavs 42-10 win on the road and momentum going into the Oregon game.

    • “Bray is a different coach”.
Said it before, football is his LIFE more so than others we’ve seen. Less distractions in his life.
He was recently quoted saying he isn’t nervous before a game because of preparation and added that he imagines circumstances that may come up ahead of time. That prior imagination should lead to better real time decisions.

First road game will tell us more, very good chance that Vegas line is moving in the right direction (started at -4.5, now -5.5).

    • I thought Allah looked a bit like Martinez, but with more top end speed. He would keep his shoulders square, move laterally, and get going. He is going to surprise teams and he’ll likley get more of Griffin’s carries if Griffin doesn’t take care of the ball.

I think the Beavers, probably running Allah, could have scored another TD at the end of the game if they wanted, but preferred to get the out safely, injury free, and without showing more to future opponents.

  3. I’m paraphrasing Bray’s post-game presser here: he was stating that such a run heavy offense was not the plan going in, but it was working so why stop? Huge contrast to Smith/Lindgren that let to so much frustration.

  4. Dude McCoy went 9-10 and one was a drop and threw 1 long td the allowed the receiver to catch in stride. He looked good! I’m not necessarily sold on him or anything but his first was a good start.

  5. Re: Smith,Lindgren lead to frustration – I recall a flopped play that didn’t fit the occasion. When asked about it, Smith said they had worked on it all week and wanted to try it out. Even I didn’t think that was a good idea.

  6. If Bray doesn’t start going for fourth down in ridiculously stupid situations, Wannabeav is going to have a fit, renounce his fanship, and sail his yacht back to Puget Sound!

If you feel like OSU played and coached to the best of their ability Saturday, then you’ll be worried about every game this year.
If you feel that OSU went as bland as they could on Saturday by design, to maintain an element of surprise for SDSU and 0regon, you will be optimistic.
I’m in the latter category. I’d rather my starting QB go 9-10 against a cupcake and win by 20 over a QB going 41-49 and winning by 10.
    Beavs by 10+

Exactly, add in the fact that it was the first game for the staff and many starters and the result is very encouraging.
I expect a jump forward and improvement for everyone from game 1 to 2 anyway.
The goal is to be primed for Oregon at 2-0 but with improvement, momentum and a bit of trickery still hidden, plus most of the
playbook still available and unknown by opportunity.
This is the ideal situation to get past the Ducks and be 3-0 with everyone believing, improving and settling into clear roles/purpose team-wide.

Beavs 31 SDSU 21. My biggest concern is the officials. After watching a lot of games over weekend, it seems there is an agenda more than in the past. MWC officials scares me. If we overcome and head to CW 2-0, I would bet the Ducks will get every call plus some. No way “they” will let us beat Ducks on Fox… even if we play well enough to win.

A couple random thoughts on Angry’s takes on McCoy and the sad, state of Beaver High School Football:

Angry always said one needed four games to judge a QB. Apparently McCoy is so bad Angry knows after one game, and he may be right. Four games is just a guideline. But the guy ran the plays he was asked to play, completed 90% of his passes without an INT. I think the jury is still out.

I won’t be surprised if Johnson is the better QB, but he missed much of spring and at least he is getting programmed snaps during meaningful game time to give him experience and evaluate him.

Also, I recall Angry having quite the crush on a small, weak armed QB at BSU, and saying a team didn’t need a tall, strong armed gunslinger, just a smart QB who could play in a 20 yard box within the offense.

And, that QB, and that BSU program played in, what is apparently, wait for it….a high school conference with a high school schedule.

Finally, if Beaver sports are now sad, high school sports, why maintain the blog? Shut it down. It will have had a good life and been enjoyed and appreciated by many.

      • Man, Moore was frustrating his first year….what was his single game INT record? 4? 7? Great second year, turned into one of my favorite players. I’d probably take senior year Moore as one of the Beavers best in the “modern era,” if that means anything…Better I thought than Mannion, Canfield, Anderson….Moveau….at least his senior year when he put it all together.

  10. this is nice: from an msn DJU write-up that wasn’t as cruel as some.

“Fans and analysts note that Oregon State’s strong offensive line and running game covered Uiagalelei’s flaws last season. Now, FSU’s inability to replicate that success has left the quarterback exposed and struggling.”

A different article referred to DJ as having a “molasses brain.”

    • Molasses brain vs. the monkey brains, lol. BTW, Angry, I don’t think you’re laughing out loud as much as you say you are.

Anyway, “molasses brain” is pretty accurate. Last season it was extremely frustrating watching DJU take so much time to figure out where to throw the ball, and then just throw it away after overlooking 3 open receivers. I’m really surprised that didn’t stand out on film to FSU recruiters.

So the game v. UO is at 12:30. Apparently only “standing room” tickets left. Perfect time to test putting the opponent in the sun – if its going to be hot – and have the Beavers in the shade in all white uniforms. The student section would be behind the Ducks and should at least be full enough to harass the Ucks.

With an away game at SDSU, there’s plenty of time to run through the logistics, do a few dry runs on set up and implementation.

    • That kid has all the measurables, but can’t seem to attach them to his brain stem.

Never comes across as unlikeable, you want to root for him, he’s just not a program saving qb. That’s a lot of pressure which appears to be his problem, and Big Dave running his yap doesn’t help.

      • chiles was a stringbean, by the looks of it he has started to fill out some, so that could have been part of the issue–injury avoidance etc. Or maybe snake oil smith was holding him out in prep for his big move. Either way I am actively rooting against that dude, he is tied at the hip to js.

    • To be fair, it’s not ALL DJU’s fault. That FSU team had their lines pushed like paper. 21 total yards rushing and oppositely bad on the defensive side. It’s a complete collapse of the team from coaching down.

      • I saw at least 4 basic throws to wide open receivers that missed the mark and would have changed the game if completed. I wish DJU the best but he’s as much to blame in the loss to BC than anyone else on the team. He’s just not very good and limits an offenses potential. He’ll show flashes but you can’t count on him

OSU numbers are pretty well in line with non-favorable Big 12 start time games. Better than some of the ACC games on CW last season.

  14. Tribune writer says Johnson “was the second-highest graded rusher in the game with a 75.4 grade in the category, trailing only running back Jam Griffin.”

From a defensive standpoint, he has concerns vs a running team like SDSU, says:
Oregon State only had three players graded a 70 or higher against the run. Of those three, only one was a defensive lineman, with Semisi Saluni receiving a 72.2 grade. Saluni, linebacker Melvin Jordan IV and edge rushers Nikko Taylor and Zakaih Saez were the only players on the front seven to have double digit snaps against the run — with the latter three receiving grades of 61.0, 55.7 and 50.4.

ISU was the top passing team in FCS last season. Their gameplan was obvious. It’s hard to really say
much about your run defense when you’re selling out to slow down the passing attack.

I’m not going to freak out over anything until we see what happens Saturday against a mediocre MW team.

Re: DJ, I got to speak with him a few times out and about around Corvallis while he was playing for us. Really nice guy. Very soft spoken. Wish nothing but the best for him, but at this point, I think if he wants any prospect of becoming a pro athlete, he might need to go back to focusing on baseball.

Best thing for his football career would have been staying with us. Give him another year in the system, and he’s likely a great QB for us this year against mostly MW competition. Not to mention the pressure is so much lower here, and the fans would have appreciated him for staying. FSU fans are absolutely dragging him through the mud. On Instagram, they’ve just been absolutely nasty to him, they’ve even gone on his fiancés page saying all sorts of terrible things and she had to turn her comments off. Can’t help but feel a bit bad for him.

      1

Except the “system” here is totally different now. Sounds like there was no clamoring to keep him by Bray and Gundy. NIL money could be better spent elsewhere.

    • Yeah, the treatment of him sounds absurd.

I agree he probably could have done better in this offense. Probably a better OLine, RB stable…receivers likely to get open now….for all the quicksand and speed of Gould, Irish, Golden, they just didn’t seem to get open consistently in that offense and Lindgren’s

  16. “The play was run coming out of a change of possession, where OSU got the ball at its 45 following a punt. The play was simple, but complex in its execution. Ultimately, it was a long pass that Wells ran under and made a play. But there was plenty going on to set it up.

It was a three-receiver set – Jordan Anderson and Zachary Card to the left, and Wells to the right – and running back Anthony Hankerson in the backfield. The play is initially sold as a run, as McCoy, going under center to the snap, makes a play-action fake to Hankerson. In the meantime, Card pivots to his right and runs in a direction where he could take a handoff on a reverse. This gets the attention of a couple Bengals, allowing McCoy to have acres of space in the pocket to cut loose with a long throw.

In the meantime, Wells streaks toward the post, then about midway through his route runs toward the left pylon. At about the 25, Idaho State safety Janari Boone closes in on Wells, but he’s no match for the speed of the second-year OSU receiver. Cornerback Tylor Bohannon comes over to help, but Wells splits the two and runs past them at the 10. He catches a beautifully thrown ball over his shoulder at the seven and glides into the end zone for a touchdown.

“It was a play we liked all week, and had seen on film against them. Felt like we had a good opportunity,” Gunderson said.

Said left tackle Gerad Christian-Lichtenhan: “It was designed to give him space, and that’s what he got.”

A great setup doesn’t always lead to great execution, though. In this case, it had a perfect finish.

“David Wells made an unbelievable catch,” Gunderson said. “He just ran right through them. He can really run. And it was a hell of a throw. Probably the only throw that could have been. I couldn’t have been underthrown, because it would have been intercepted.”

Wells said he saw Boone, and “I just kind of beat him with my speed.”

That play came through a connection Wells made with McCoy over the summer.

“We built a connection with routes through the air. We clicked pretty quick,” Wells said.

Coaches, of course, have never seen a perfect play. There’s always something that could have been better. That goes for this one, too.

“Jordan Anderson was standing wide open in the middle of the field,” Gunderson said, smiling.

  17. SDSU’s coach sounds similar to Bray in content, loyalty…+15 espressos….

Next Saturday’s game would be fun in person, good Mexican food, new stadium that looks like it has good, close sight lines.

  18. Bill Oram wrote this about ‘that pass.’

    16. McCoy’s pass, one of only 10 he threw, was a floating ash. He placed the ball where only Wells could have caught it, coaxing him into the end zone in front of two defenders, and in that moment, McCoy was the author of something beautiful.

    • Geezus Bill, get a room. It was a good pass and catch, but it wasn’t particularly special in the world of college football passes.

I appreciated the play design and execution (see above) and that an additional player was wide open, more than the pass itself.

RE celebrations, there’s clearly a new standard allowed based on week “0” and week 1…watch for what was acceptable so far to be “excessive” and unacceptable in the interests of ranked teams moving forward.

Against UO, Bray should make it clear end zone celebrations are not acceptable, particularly choreographed ones…

  20. Joe Freeman: Oregon State Beavers’ defense ready for ‘great challenge’ of high-octane San Diego State offense

“CORVALLIS — As the San Diego State football team waits to sprint onto the field before a game at Snapdragon Stadium, a hype video blares on gigantic video boards, creating a buzz among the home crowd.

The cinematic montage teases, among other things, a new, high-octane offense directed by first-year coach Sean Lewis.

“It’s as fast as we can humanly go,” Lewis says in the video.

Or, in Week 2 of the college football season, as fast as the Oregon State Beavers will allow it to go.

As the Beavers prepare for their first FBS foe of the 2024 season, the defense is gearing up to stop a different kind of offensive beast than it faced in Week 1, when OSU coasted past pass-heavy Idaho State in a season-opening tune-up.

San Diego State plays fast. It plays with poise. And it plays with exceptional balance, testing opponents with the nation’s most productive running back, a dynamic true freshman quarterback and an offensive scheme designed to stress, disorient and exasperate defenses.

“They’ve got a lot of tools,” OSU defensive coordinator Keith Heyward said. “They’ve got some guys who can run, who can break tackles at running back, (who are) pretty shifty. It’s going to be a great challenge for us that we’re up for.”

The challenge starts when senior running back Marquez Cooper, a 5-foot-8, 200-pound bowling ball who enters the game as college football’s active leader in rushing yards (4,079), all-purpose yards (4,699) and rushing touchdowns (35). A transfer who started his career at Kent State — when Lewis coached there — Cooper opened his San Diego State career in jaw-dropping fashion last week, bulldozing his way to 223 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries in a 45-14 win over Texas A&M-Commerce.

He opened the second half with a 47-yard touchdown run and also had a 38-yard scamper as he produced the most rushing yards at San Diego State since 2017, when Rashaad Penny had a career-high 234 against San Jose State before embarking on his NFL career.

Cooper is no stranger to prolific performances — he has rushed for at least 100 yards in 18 different games and surpassed 1,000 yards in three different seasons. And while one might be inclined to dismiss the gaudy statistics because of the competition he faced at Kent State and Ball State, consider this: Cooper amassed 187 all-purpose yards, including 90 rushing yards and a touchdown, in a loss at the Georgia Bulldogs in 2022.

“He’s tough,” Heyward said. “He has a really good spin move, some jump cuts, stuff like that. But he’s physical and he’ll run downhill on you. They run all the different run schemes in there to keep you honest up front. But even watching some of the stuff from when he was at Kent State … he’s just a tough, physical runner.”

San Diego State offers a much different challenge than Idaho State, which attempted 45 passes and rushed just 16 times last week.

The good news for the Beavers? They spent August trying to slow the two-headed running back monster of Jam Griffin and Anthony Hankerson every day in preseason camp.

“That doesn’t hurt at all,” OSU safety Jack Kane said. “You guys saw what Jam and Hank can do. I mean, those guys, they’re dudes. It’s awesome to be able to prepare for a back like this, a similar … stocky guy who can get loose and does it all. I think Jam and Hank have set the tone for how we need to play the run.”

As for San Diego State’s passing attack, Heyward said he mostly liked what he saw from the Beavers’ pass defense last week. Oregon State allowed 229 yards through the air, but snatched two interceptions, recorded two sacks and hurried the quarterback 11 times. If there was one nitpick, Heyward said, it was that his secondary needed to play tighter in coverage.

It’s been an area of focus during practice this week as the Beavers prepare for Danny O’Neil, who became the first true freshman quarterback to start a season opener at San Diego State since the team moved started playing Division I football in 1969.

O’Neil had an inauspicious opening to his college debut, overthrowing several receivers in the first half. But he settled down after halftime, completing 11 of 12 passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns in the second half. The highlight came on a 44-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to wide receiver Louis Brown Jr.

But while there is a great promise lurking in O’Neil’s talent, there is also perhaps weakness in his youth.

“That’s just an opportunity,” OSU redshirt freshman defensive tackle Thomas Collins said. “He’s new, just like I’m new. So I’m going to go try to make him nervous, try to make him shake, so that we can make plays.”

San Diego State’s run-pass balance — and its feverish pace — will present a different kind of challenge for the Beavers. But the mentality remains unchanged.

I don’t feel like it changes much about us,” Kane said. “Our philosophy on defense stays the same. The first thing we’re going to do is we’re going to kill the run and then it turns into what it is. It’s a different opponent, more balanced, so (we have to have) more disciplined eyes. But I think the guys are going to handle it fine. It’s been looking good so far.”

  21. I hope DL Collin’s doesn’t get poached with NIL $. His in season growth alone will be fun to watch. I suspect his growth by next season will have him reminding us of Paea.

    • Saturday evening, 80-85 degrees, SDSU Co-Ed’s… you may live up to your name…

Seriously though, should be a fun game with SDSU playing hurry up. OSU can try and slow them with the run, or Gundy may have to ask them to play fast too.

Also, even if touristy, the Old Town Mexican Cafe has pretty good food and nice people. At least to my one experience…

      • Yep, it has been toasty in So Cal… will be hitting 100 in day time today and tomorrow in Los Angeles. Old Town is worth the walk through and so is Little Italy San Diego. Go Beavs!

Is it possible that Boise St can run over the Duck Dline just like the Beavs did in 2022?
I’m hoping the Broncos can inflict some doubt in set the table for the Beavs to do the same and worse this year.
It may be best if the ducks scrape out a close win rather than a loss that focuses them.
I’d prefer a nice early season 2 game losing streak for the ducks before they even start Big10 schedules.

Beavs will roll in San Diego and be in prime position to unravel the ducks hype machinery.

If anyone is going to have extra time in San Diego, walking around Coronado Island is a nice day also.

BSU has a great RB, and everyone is picking the Ducks, so hopefully that focuses BSU. OLive says Ducks need a “blowout win.”

I think Ducks are unvictoried against BSU, so maybe they are due…but I’d like to see them lose a close one personally, or in a blowout.

With all the roster turnover they enjoy, pulling together after a loss may not be as easy(?) as it is for a team with stability? As Jack said, they can have highly rated transfers and recruits, but they still have to play together…

    • 5
      4

I don’t know if I would want to face a two loss duck team. I think I’d rather squeak by BSU putting some doubt in their minds rather than a two loss team that has to run the table. It would be like smacking a hornets nest a few times.

  23. Matt Boyd pitching for a cleveland tonight vs the Dodgers in LA.

So far one hit through 5 innings. He’s been fantastic so far.

  24. Scanning articles of Oregon HS football and saw this:

“Wiepert has been placed in a tough spot to fill the shoes of Gutridge, who now plays at Oregon State. Wiepert will join his close friend in Corvallis next year — but is joining the Beaver baseball program”

Wiepert sounds like quite the all around athlete, I was thinking “college safety?” as I scanned it, interesting to see he is joining OSU baseball.

    https://www.oregonlive.com/highschoolsports/2024/09/wilsonvilles-mark-wiepert-debuts-at-qb-guiding-wildcats-to-big-win-over-class-6a-opponent-nelson.html

  25. Saw a video about Desmond Howard’s son is on the ESPN app’s front page and the Oregon State flag is flying in the background in the picture! Go Beavs.

  26. When they say tonight’s game is on CBS Sports network, does that mean over the air CBS? Or some form of streaming only, like on Paramount Plus?

Seems to be something that isn’t communicated very well.

  27. I had a good beat on last week’s game, anticipating lots of run. Didn’t expect us to run *that* much but it worked.

I have a feeling tonight’s game is a rock fight. This will be one of the best rushing attacks the Beavs see this year with Marquez Cooper. The rush defense wasn’t really tested last week. SDSU is starting a true freshman QB. Forcing him into situations where he can make a mistake will be the difference.

Will Clemons and Card be healthy and active for the offense today? No matter what, McCoy is going to have to prove it with his arm today. I think we’ll still be able to run the ball relatively well.

I got a low scoring, close game. I’m nervous and -6 is too generous of a spread, but I’ll take the Beavs winning it 23-19

  28. The more I think back on last week, the more I realize that I appreciate the coaches performance that game. Didnt really think about it much after game 1, but i think it’s because they didnt do anything that forced me to think about them. No major bonehead errors/playcalls. They didnt abandon the run game after having success with it. The OLine didnt habe any penalties(a rarity for any OSU OLine) and most of the defensive penalties were very fixable. Chisom had a bad series, but all good learning moments.
The special teams snap was unfortunate, but not too costly since we were punting the ball away anyway. I’ll take a 2 pt safety on a bad snap vs a turnover in our own territory.

  29. So Bolden was set to be THE GUY at OSU and now he can’t even get on the field for Sark at Texas. Is the money worth it for these guys? How much did he get to leave, and how much more was it above an OSU NIL package if he had stayed?

He is such an electric playmaker but is now forgotten in their locker room.
