The comment areas have been filling up quickly, so this will likely get us to halftime, at which time I'll make a new post.

Sometimes I wake up on game day feeling optimistic…eh, maybe a little more today than mid-week, but not enough to change my pick.

Game note: It'll be nice to see Grant Enger start. This should have happened last season. If he has a good game, it'll be interesting to see if the media asks Riley why he didn't start last year (or this year over Ellis). When Andrews comes back, Enger's experience should relegate Ellis to the bench, which means it won't. Just an interesting side story to follow.

Go Beavs.

  1. so maybe mine eyes deceive me but it seems like they are playing with a teensy bit more fire? probably because of james rodgers return, and oh there’s no pressure (everyone expects them to lose blah blah). hmm feeling hopeful..yikes

  2. Ward looks scared. He is going down before being tackled, running into the back of linemen with no vision, etc. What is the deal? Why is he starting?? Even on the runs where he had holes and tried to juke he ran right into defenders.

  3. Leave it to the Beavers to blow a double coverage. Watkins slow to get there–should have been an easy pick or at worst a batted pass. He was actually facing the ball and simply didn’t try to catch it. We’ve given Watkins a pass since he’s new…enough of that. Give Murphy a shot.

  4. If I have to watch one more of these 3 minute long Foundation for a Better Life / Values.com commercials, I’m going to go steal a purse from an old woman and use the money inside to buy a bunch of pot which I’ll in turn sell to middle schoolers.

  5. That is bad coaching…gotta go for that and at least try to give these crappy players some confidence. All for what, 20 yards net punt? If you have a great punter who can pin them inside the 5, okay…

  6. Nice to see Stevenson in there–anyone is better than Ward.

People on other forums are down on Mannion. He’s made the two bad turnovers, but overall I like his play so far.

    • I agree. people seem to forget it is his first start as a RS Freshman against a Pac-12 team. He’s gonna make some mistakes here and there but he’ll also make some really big plays.

  7. Going for two is going to come back to bite us now that it’s a two possession game. I want our coach to have balls, but again, he should have balls at the smart times.

    • Did you notice that Rodgers wasn’t even looking for the pass because he was blanketed? His body language was WTF??? Almost like he was the decoy on the play, but Mannion threw to him anyway.

  8. The biggest positive of this game is that Langsdork is one game closer to being fired.

Mannion looked good, too, and the pass protection was actually great. Special teams was great. D laid another egg.

    • “…Mannion looked good, too,…” Agree. Looks to me like the kid has an opportunity to be very good. BUT he needs a good/great OL in front of him. NOT A BUNCH OF WALKONS.

      • Not on the wagon yet. There were opportunities to tuck and run. Mannion looks hilarious when he attempts anything more than a brisk walk. How can he be so slow?

        • I’m thinking that since Mannion is so green he gets some slack as he’s getting accustomed to the speed of college football. I thought he showed a heck of a lot of poise considering how inexperienced he is. I like his accuracy and the way he’s going through his progressions, considering how new he is to the game. It’s a shame that he has to be thrown into the deep end of the pool at this stage of his career but imo he’s the best option the Beavs have at QB.

  9. Hate to sound like a broken record but imo Langsdorf is Riley’s creation and nothing more than that. And Riley apparently isn’t capable of making the necessary changes.

    • Haha. I expressed similar rage the other loss and was told that I had no right to question Riley and his character. What he’s doing is embarrassing for his team and the fans. And not making anyone accountable shows a complacent attitude and poor character. As long as Banker and Labeled are here I will continue to question Riley’s integrity

  10. Some of the worst play calling on critical situations I have seen in a long time. They shouldn’t wait till the end of the season.. Fire Langsdorf now. Although the defense looked almost as bad.

    • No surprise.

Other than rushing yards the stats vs wisconsin were remarkably close.

Except that the team that can excecute in the red zone had 35 points.

  11. Was there not the possibility to go deep with Wheaton or even Rodgers on just one play? That was some of the most unimaginative play calling I have ever seen. Even using Terron Ward on the 4th down was idiotic if anyone had noticed his performance throughout the game i.e. having absolutely no field awareness and falling down at the slightest touch. Man, this is a sick feeling to have a season over by game three. I never thought the program would fall so hard so fast.

  12. You guys can give it to me…..but at this point it might be more interesting to go 0-12 just to see what happens. 2-10, 3-9, are kind of boring and I doubt create much change.

    • In fact, I think 0-12 is not actually out of the question based on who we play. I don’t see us even beating washington state, I think they look decent this year.

      • I disagree, I see us winning 2-4. And no progress made at play calling. I worry about our D against some better teams. Having big #98 back will be good. I loved watching him chasing that Wisconsin QB (even if it was only to wear himself out). Whats the deal with McCants. Still in trouble over the fumble-itis 3 years ago? 3-9 sucks. And 3-9 is the type of record to keep our geriatric fan base from being vocal for change.

          • Ok, I take it back. I thought maybe Arizona, Cal and one of the Washington schools or a prayer with one of the Utah schools. But watching the late game tonight, and Arizona has way too much fire power for the Beaver D. Sad

  13. In the LSU loss season, even when the Beavs were 1-4 it felt different and you knew there were teams that the Beavs would beat on the schedule. I think WSU is the only possibility unless Arizona continues to implode. Can you imagine what Luck is going to do to this secondary?

  14. And fire Bobby D. Why am I watching Fresno State at Idaho on HD after watching the first PAC-12 conference game in a pixilated Dam Cam version on my computer??? WTF that is on Bobby D

    • Standing ovations for what????? Accomplishing something that Pettibone did in ’96 (0-3 start). Good lord, are we in some bizarro world where the head coach of a D-1 football program in not held accountable to anyone?

  15. Just back from Reser. In the stands, it felt more lopsided than the score indicates. Even though the Beavers had more total yards than UCLA, it felt like UCLA was the stronger team all game. Maybe that’s because UCLA was able to run the ball down our throats whenever they felt like it, and was also able to stifle our running game.

No running attack + Inability to stop opponent’s running attack = Loss. Football 101.

Except for the two careless turnovers, I thought Mannion played well. And he’s only going to get better. QB is not the problem (in fact, it’s probably going to be one of our strong points very soon….)

The obvious problems are our anemic running attack and our porous run defense.

Getting Agnew back should help our running attack (if Agnew can stay healthy). But we still need better run-blocking and better play-calling. Doubtful that our o-line is going to improve much in that area this season. As for the play-calling, Riley can change that whenever he wants, but will he?

Getting Masaniai back should help our run defense (as we saw against Wisconsin). But I doubt that will suffice. We need more Dylan Wynns and fewer Ben Motters, more Michael Doctors and fewer Rueben Robinsons. And we need a defensive coordinator who can make adjustments to stop teams from gaining 5 to 7 yards on the same damn running plays all game.

A bowl game is obviously not going to happen this year. But it’s worse than that. If we don’t improve our running attack and our run defense, 0-12 is now quite possible. Coach Riley — it’s your move.

  16. My girl won club level seats to the game, so we went.

Ward was terrible. Stevenson, who was the primary runner in the second half, actually moved the ball, but that may have been a result of good blocking, not good running.

But our D’s refusal to adapt to a simple HB Dive was absolutely infuriating. For 4 quarters, that is all they did, and we did nothing to stop it. We continually had a corner and a LB on the weak side of the ball where there was no receiver at all, creating a huge imbalance that UCLA took advantage of. That’s just horrid coaching.

Also, we had a safety in perfect position to pick that first TD pass, and he ran clear behind the WR and did nothing. Remember when we had playmakers back there? Maybe Poyer would be an insane safety.

All-in-all, both coordinators need to go, and if Riley doesn’t see that, sad as it is to say, so does he.

  17. Watching ASU and USC. Both look good but I have been real impressed with ASU this year. If they come with the same game to OSU it is going to be a blow-out. Somebody in the PAC-12 will put up 40 to 50 points on the Beavs before season’s end.

To bad Rogers couldn’t have held out until next year…. maybe that will be the year we win one.

  18. Even though both Arizona’s D-LIne and O-Line are awful and their linebackers are slow, they have a good offense and that offense will absolutely shred the Beavers nonexistent pass defense with ease. The Beavers will score some points but UA can score 40+ without much issue on the Beavers. These next two games I expect both teams to get over 500 yards total offense with ease.

    • Nope. The Beavers will make some plays and score some points on Zona, but they will also miss on a lot of other points against Arizona thanks to atrocious play calling. I think Zona will beat the Beavers 42-24

  19. I was blown away by a stat tonight:

Since 1992 Kansas State is 50-5 in the month of september under Bill Snyder.

Granted, they schedule lots of patsies and mostly at home…but the fact remains that a good coach properly evaluates the talent on hand and gets those players ready for the field BEFORE the season starts.

    • Wasn’t Bill Snyder a candidate for the Beavers head coaching position in the early-mid 90’s? I seem to remember hearing something about that.

From 1997 through the 2003 season, Bill Snyder won 72 games and won 11 games in a season 6 of the 7 seasons. If he were to do now what he did then he would have had likely 6 BCS appearances. He should have had a trip to the BCS Title Game vs Tennessee or FSU in 1998 but he received some really bad luck against A&M in Big XII Championship.

Just for Bill Snyder to win 11 games in a season 6 out of 7 years in the Big XII with Kansas State of all teams is pretty incredible. He didn’t have huge loads of talent but his teams were always fundamentally sound, had the right amount of focus, well coached and always prepared. Pretty much the opposite of what OSU has right now.

K-State went into Miami and won a game on the road against a much more talented team coming off a confidence building win against Ohio State. His team came in prepared, focused and were obviously well coached. If Oregon State went on the road to play Miami, no matter what year it is, it would be without a doubt a double digit loss, if not a 20+ point loss. The Beavers have more talent than K-State but are nowhere near as prepared or well coached.

That’s probably what makes what we are seeing even worse. Teams that have less talent than the Beavers are clearly far superior as a team to the Beavers. That is coaching. UCLA is a very poor coached team but the Beavers make it look differently.

  20. I like the petition idea. I also think fans must make their voices heard on other websites as well. I think many of the sports writers aren’t asking the tough questions, the media should be the voice of the fanbase. Not let the coaching staff or administration off easily. I bet Bob DeCarolis didn’t think 1-11 in 2011, or 0-12 by 2012 sounded like a good fundraising opportunities. It doesn’t have the same ring as 12,000 by 2012. Kiss that idea goodbye! OSU will be lucky to have 1,200 by 2012! I’m disgusted, and because I don’t want to see OSU in the cellar, it doesn’t make me a lesser fan! Real fans will NOT accept what is happening with OSU football period.

  21. I was checking out the Corvallis Gazette and Cliff had the nerve to use the phrase “instant gratification” in commenting on fan frustration. I kind of take that as an insult considering the thoughtful opinion I read here. I wonder if he reads this blog? I guess he can keep his head in the sand forever to maintain his lame insider access.

  22. Riley and his staff have demonstrated an inability to learn how to: 1) win early in the season, 2) implement a defensive scheme that allows defensive backs to play the ball AND to adapt to, and effectively neutralize spread/option offenses; 3) make offensive adjustments within a timeframe that allows them to compete in, or win, games. There is a disturbing trend of all three of these factors worsening and becoming demonstrably more consistent; they are trends, not anomalies. The Civil War this year is going to be a huge embarassment for the players.I won’t be purchasing season tickets again or attending games at OSU until:

    Riley and staff take demonstrable efforts (e.g. retreats) in the off-season to learn from other coaching staffs strategies for early season success;

Riley either tells Banker to change the way he teaches and implements his scheme, or he removes Banker; and

Langsdorf’s play calling responsibilities are suspended.

  23. From the oregonian: “OLB Rueben Robinson started in place of Michael Doctor because of his bulk and the fact he was once a MLB. “We knew they were going to pound it at us,’’ explained Riley”

Wow, nice strategy coach -put a slower player in there who can’t shed blocks or tackle because he couldn’t win a job at MLB.

If memory serves, Robinson now has 3 tackles this season. Doctor had 4 in this game alone.

When I raised concerns about Robinson moving to the outside, people thought (hoped) he’d be buried on the depth chart there…but no, its another stubborn move by Riley, who can’t admit they mis-evaluated a player and simply put the guy on the damn scout team.

  24. Interesting note: The Beavers have scored fewer points this season than the Ducks scored yesterday. OSU is second-to-last in the nation in pass defense – and the secondary was going to be a team strength.
