Home Football Washington @ Oregon State (Game Day)

Washington @ Oregon State (Game Day)

353

This game is fairly predictable. The Beavs give up almost 200 yards per game on the ground, and Washington has a solid RB, Chris Polk. They'll hand it off 30+ times if the game allows. It might not, though. The Huskies start Nick Montana at QB. Obviously I haven't seen Montana's progress over the past two years, but his HS game film was pedestrian back when he committed. Mark Banker's game plan should be simple: stack the box, make Montana win the game.

If Banker has the sense to do that, I think the Beavs win this game for two reasons:

  • Washington's defense is porous. Mannion should have a fun day.
  • James Rodgers will have the team fired up for his last home game.

Beavs are looking at a 10 loss season if they drop this one. It would be their first since 1995. Vegas has the line at -2, Washington, but I think that's a (rare) epic fail on their part. This is an ideal match up for the Beavs.

31-21, good guys.

  1. Mark Banker has no sense, though. He should have stacked the box against Utah or Cal when presented with the evidence to do so, but he let the team down like has since 2008. Langsdorf will stick with his shitty play calls and despite Rodgers heroics we will lose.

    45 to 31…
    Fuck the Huskies

    • I also expect Montana to have a break out game against us because he is most likely football smart. All he has to do is pass it to whoever Reynolds is covering. He will throw for 250 yards

      • I don’t know what to expect from Montana. I disliked his HS film…very much a horizontal/west coast passer…I don’t see much vertical threat, which should help if Banker stacks the box. I just like this match up. You could be right, though. Beavs are a bad team, so will I be at all surprised if they get shellacked? Nope.

  2. Angry you are giving banker too much credit to actually make a shift on defense I think he comes out with the Cal/Utah/Stanford game plan (get run over and do nothing about it). I mean lets be honest, Banker has not made a single defensive adjustment since that ill fated civil war game that we gave up all of those points.

I think the beavs play hard, being that its the last home game, and dad’s weekend gives them a chance and if the offense can execute they can get it done. But Banker needs to go, guy has the creativity of a slug and he pisses me off.

  3. You guys bring up valid criticisms. Apparently Riley was eying Banker/the defense all week during practice. I have faith Banker gets the message and stacks the box this week (it’s pretty sad he can’t figure that out on his own).

  4. Agreed. This is Utah all over again (no QB, one-dimensional, one-back running offense) but without Utah’s defense.

If Banker stacks the box, OSU wins easily.

If Banker fails to stack the box, Sarkisian calls out Banker at the post-game press conference, and Banker resigns in disgrace.

    It’s all good. Go Beavs!

  5. HI BN… The excitement builds… discounted popcorn… YEA! But, it just gets better! Close out Beaver gear discounted 25%. After this year, who wouldn’t be proud to wear Beaver apparel?

I really feel this is our day. Poyer will be in little Montana’s face all day. Unless, of course, Banker finds a way to make him look like his dad. I’m going with the Beavs to pick up number three. Yippee…. 3-8!

I just saw interviewed Riley on CSN. He seems lethargic and unfocused. Has anyone administered a concussion quiz?

Leaving in a few… those creative promotions should pack Reser. JB

PS: Joe Montana will be in the UW visitor section. If you happen to see him, say “hello”. He is very approachable and loves to sign autographs.

  6. I’m interested to see what USC can do tonight. Size + speed + depth…they could give the Ducks a game. Should be closer than the Stanford game. I’ve thought ASU and USC match up best with the Ducks. Ducks will probably score early/rapidly and force Barkley to pass too much, then pick him off a few times and win by two scores. Robert Woods (USC’s best player) hasn’t practiced much this week…looks like the Ducks lucked out again. If Woods doesn’t play I’m thinking 35-21 Ducks. Probably 35-27 if he does play.

    • I have to say Stanford had the worst game plan I’ve seen. The ducks loaded up the box sometimes with as many as nine guys and Standford continued to try to run every first and second down with supposedly the #1 draft pick as QB (not sold on that myself, because Barkely is better). USC needs to put up points to stay balance or they will become one demensional in the second and we will see a blowout.

      • Shaw isn’t a good coach. He will be exposed next season.

Agree on Luck…I actually think he’ll be a disappointment if not an all out bust. I don’t like Barkley, either, though…typical USC QB (Sanchez, Palmer)…he’ll look the part but underwhelm.

Of the Pac-12 QBs, I like Foles best.

Weeden has potential. Overall, this is a pretty weak QB class.

        • I like Foles too, not sure about Weeden. Last night at one point 16 of his 29 completions were caught behind the line of scrimage but he did throw a couple of really nice balls and the INTs weren’t his fault.

        • Weeden is 28 years old (played minor league ball)…I think that poise and experience helps him at the next level. He could probably start somewhere right away.

PS. Matt Moore’s been playing very well in Miami…always loved his potential and thought he’d do well if given a chance. He’s a QB who needs to play ahead, though, since he forces bad balls (why does OSU QBs all do this??) when behind or pressured at all.

        • I don’t know that I would go as far as Phil Simms, but I was not awe-struck by Luck’s arm strength either. This may sound weird, but I was more impressed by some of the throws Ryan Katz made last year.

You give Luck the Beaver offensive line and run game and does he do that much more than Mannion has done with it? Maybe he wins a game or two more with his decisions/experience, but I doubt he would even make the Beavers a bowl team this year.

      • As many have pointed ou here, Stanford’s lack of speed was exposed and they had absolutely no speed at WR and of course with the charmed life that is the Oregon Duck football program Chris Owusu was out thanks to the Beavs.

    • And of course if the Beavs had played USC the year, Woods would have been in the best condition of the season. Love that “Luck O’ the Beavs”

  7. Sorry don’t mean to feed the troll, but you know, Pettibone’s DC, Rock Long, knew how to play with a defense that didn’t have the size or atheletes to compete. They brought blitzes from all over to compensate, Banker has barely blitzed all season. – some years ago he actually called blitzes, but I get the feeling he has no faith in these guys being able to handle their assignments (which haven’t changed all year) or he has given up and he pisses presleydog off.

    • Long is a stud, there was a photo of him in USA Today this week, he looks how a football coach should. His 93-95 defenses played with passion and intensity. If Pettitbone wasn’t a wishbone guy they would have ended the losing steak back then and both of them might still be coaching at OSU. I think one season, the offense scored all of about 130 points while the defense only gave up 240 or so. Can’t win many games averaging 12 points.

  8. One thing to keep in mind, our run defense really went to shit after Unga went down. I guess that means he’s our only MLB who gets it, has the tools, as is supposedly back to full strength. Still have no faith in romaine, 34 (missed xp) – 24. Go beavs!

    • I didn’t realize Unga is back. He’s a solid player. Was last year, too, and it took the coaches over half the season to get him in the lineup.

  9. I will be watching back seven closer than usual, remember Riley and Banker were “bitching and moaning” that they did stack the box, but it was all of the missed tackles that have caused the huge rushing totals. Either way, I would say tackling technique is also the coaches responsibility. Once again, accountability.

  10. The fact that we’re not sure if Banker will know to start out the game stacking the box is reason enough that he should seriously not be the defensive coordinator anymore. I think Mannion will have a nice day against that atrocious Washington defense, but I’m not sure I have enough faith in our coaching staff this year to actually get Oregon State the win. Hopefully tonight we’re all be talking about our big wins over the Huskies and Longhorns.

  11. Beavers will be wearing white pants. I hope they combine them with black tops today. Something we have hardly ever seen and a new take on the Giant Killer look. Then I will be full on into this game!

    • I liked those helmets from the Pro Combat uniforms last year. I think our best look would be those helmets, white pants, and then either the black or orange home jerseys.

    • Buker printed out the questions and gave them to OSU football staff. Buker has promised to follow up after the Civil War. If Buker forgets, I’ll remind him every day on Twitter until he remembers….

  12. Dang it! They are going with the creamsicle look. I like orange tops but that is 3 home games in a row. I wanted some proof that Riley or BDC could step outside their comfort zone and go for a fresh black top/white pant look for our last game with James. Disappointed yet again. Stale as usual. I now don’t give two licks about the game. Let James have his catches and get the record but I could care less about Riley and BDC. Same old bullshit.

  13. I got the Huskies winning this one 34-20. The coaching staff will figure out how to screw this one up. Nick Montana will look like his dad out there. Banker will make it happen.

  14. There’s a beaver dude who streams on JustIn. He was streaming earlier and he had in the header that he’d be streaming the Beavs’ game today. Don’t see him there right now but I expect him to show up.

  15. These 8v11 games really kill me. Why doesn’t the NCAA let us play with linebackers, like every other team? If we were allowed to have linebackers, we surely would be better versus the run.

  16. I am not sorry at all that I hope the Huskies beat the pants off the Beavers. Any bit of pressure to get Riley and his useless coaching staff fired is what I am shooting for. I am thinking of the future and a chance for not only a winning season, but a shot at Pac 12 champions and a BCS bowl. This will never happen under the Riley regime.

As far as color of uniforms, Riley is trying to leave his legacy at OSU. This is what he is doing:

Doing away with the fighting Beaver
    Installing his interlocking OS
Doing away with Black for home games (so what, Ducks are using more black than Beavs)
But the best part of his legacy is Riley’s ability to take OSU’s football program back to dark ages

Remember, what ever Erickson did for OSU football, BDC and Riley want to do away with.

    Washington 37 OSU 17

    Fightingbeaver

  17. Man, these announcers love Nick Montana. I’m waiting for a completion of more than 5 yards; that’s like the 3rd pass so far to a running back.

  18. Statue of Liberty well played by Montana. Sark calling plays to put Montana in position to have a good game but I think he has at least one more interception in him.

  19. Didn’t Montana originally sign with DE and then decide he didn’t want to play football or was that some other famous guy’s son?

  20. Beavs are always susceptible to reverses and misdirections. They over commit on every play and never have backside contain. Even when their D is “good” it’s a problem.

  21. Beavers receivers need to start holding on the edge to spring the run. Oregon and now Washington just grab on and don’t let go for the whole play. Apparently it’s legal now.

    • Doubt Riley has ever made this an issue with Refs, either during or BEFORE the game. Maybe a question to add to silver’s list…..ha ha.

  22. Truly unbelievable. Whenever the Beavers hold it is called. Washington holds on damn near every play and never gets called for it.

  23. You guys called. An OSU receiver does the same thing UW and Oregon receivers do on the outside, and of course, only the OSU receiver gets flagged for it.

  24. Time of possession must favor Beavs, no excuse of being tired for our D in the second half.

Turns out time of poss is exactly even, however, point still valid since our D was on the field only 5 minutes in second quarter.

    • Hey, the safeties are sneaking up!! Can’t devote too many resources, or the redshirt freshman who can’t throw more than 5 yards will beat us!

  25. Bad decision by Mannion. He can’t force the ball there. Btw, why the hell did the Beavers run the exact same play two times in a row?

  26. 3&9 from the 9 Mannion throws interception. I cant blame him too much though. Horrible play called. He tried to force it to the only reciever running deep enough to matter. All other options were short of what was needed. Guy was trying his best to make something out of this horrible play call. Why not call a play with other viable options – doh- langsdork!!

    • That pisses me off soo much too. They just dont understand how to use him. Obvious red zone asset. Also why noy for sideline quick outs when 3&9 is needed??

  27. OK, the game is there for the taking in the 4th qtr. Possession, 3pt lead; for the Beavs this year it doesn’t get any better than that. GO BEAVS !

  28. What is with all the Mannion hate? Holy cow.

None of you are allowed to root for him in 2 years when he’s 1st team all Pac12 and a 1st round draft pick.

  29. Stevenson with his second rushing touchdown. He’s playing really well. Always liked him as a player. He had a bad fumble last week, but he’s clearly the best RB.

    • I don’t know how you can call yourself a Beaver if you every root for your team to lose. Your a disgrace to the Beaver Nation. Despite you wanting the coaching to change, its important for recruiting and these kids to win games like this.

      • Shut up SadBeaver. People root for programs in different ways, and smart people recognize that you sometimes need to take a step back to take two forward.

  30. Darius Powe likes the idea of joining forces with Malik Gilmore. Powe is a stud so I hope we get him. Those guys to add into the mix with Mannion would be formidable.

  31. I understand why people want the Beavs to lose, but personally I don’t feel right rooting against them. Let’s just hope they win and Riley makes the necessary changes or retires. This win is huge for recruiting, as mentioned.

    • I can never root for them to lose a game. I don’t understand actually rooting for them to lose. I want the Beavers to win every single game.

    • I won’t ever root against them (just not my nature), but I don’t understand the animosity towards those who see the big picture. Sometimes you gotta take a step back to take two forward.

  32. It’s good to get a little momentum going into Civil War. The only thing better than a win at CW in my humble opinion would be if the Duck’s bus crashed on the way up I-5 causing Chip Dip Kelly to fly through the windshield and splatter his ass all over the pavement. Also, I don’t care if that makes me a bad person.

  33. Did this last year here… Seniors going off the roster this year:

    15 Catchings, Darrell WR 6-0 178 SR
    5 Collins, Cameron LB 6-2 238 SR
    74 Ellis, Burke OG 6-5 292 SR
    74 Frahm, Kevin DT 6-3 281 SR
    96 Glover, Dominic DT 6-3 279 SR
    87 Halahuni, Joe TE 6-2 255 SR
    17 Hardin, Brandon CB 6-3 216 SR
    7 Hekker, Johnny P 6-5 221 SR
    70 Johnson, Grant C 6-4 293 SR
    61 Lamb, Michael OG 6-3 290 SR
    24 McCants, Ryan RB 6-1 225 SR
    10 Mitchell, Lance S 6-2 207 SR
    66 Motter, Ben DT 6-5 285 SR
    36 Parish, Josh LB 5-11 219 SR
    57 Perry, Marcus LS 5-11 230 SR
    50 Remmers, Mike OT 6-5 303 SR
1 Rodgers, James WR 5-7 188 RS SR

  34. Big difference between how Riley shook hands with the WSU coach vs how he shook hands with the UW coach. Looked to me like real bad blood between Riley and WSU coach.

      • If the Beavers can land Salt the defensive line will be a beast next year. The linebackers will be a key next season. Doctor and Unga will be two of the three starters, but who’s the third starter? Akuna? It better not be Robinson. They will need to be much better next season. If the linebackers can get it together next season and the Beavers get Salt than I will have some hope for the defense.

        • No, I don’t think Akuna will be seeing the field any time soon. He’s slow to learn the playbook and adjust.

I think Welch would be the 3rd LB. Or, should be…

That’s a pretty good defense. The DTs killed us this year. So undersized…you just can’t win with bad DTs. Salt (or an equally dominant JC) is the key recruit. The past few signees look like B-listers, though, so that’s a bad sign.

  35. The young guys played well today. Future is bright with a lot of guys. Hopefully the coaching staff doesn’t stunt their development.

The Beavers got the Ducks next. Hopefully they can keep it relatively close.

  36. I have a feeling next year will be gut wrenching! They will still be young enough to pull bonehead mistakes and experienced enough to scare people.

  37. I really thought UW was UNDERrated going into this game. We still made all the typical Beaver mistakes: fumbles, INT’s, penalties; but atthe same time we showed real improvment in play calling and players made plays. Creighton with the strip, Murphy’s pick on the goal line, some great long balls that were on target and EVEN caught. It goes to show you though, that with the right coaching and a little more experience (and a few less injuries) we could have been a bowl eligible team this year. I put the poor coaching down as the tipping point this year.

We really SHOULD have been so much better.

  38. So here is what we get for the big win over Washington:

After Civil War with ducks, a 3 – 9 season
4 Civil War loses in a row – 2 at home
3rd season in a row with now toilet bowl
Ammo for Riley and coaching staff to stay with no changes
Possible future of same loosing capabilities
A continuing embarrassment to the Pac 12 – we are that now

I hope everyone enjoyed their free popcorn and coffee at the game…..what a joke.

    Fightingbeaver

    • I understand the frustration and the anger, but Im just a little less fatalistic about our future. Im still hopeful that the poor records two years running is enough pressure to create some changes in the coaching staff in the offseason. Im certain we are stuck with Riley, but I saw a different look on Mikes face on the sideline today and I really hope what I read was his frustration with his own coordinators and PC’s.

I also think we have a quarterback with REAL, GENUINE potential to be all pac12. Im also hopeful that we now have the potential to have a multi back running game instead of relying on the talents of ONE guy.

What we really need is at least one wide out with speed, and obvious improvement in both lines.

and a new DC at a minimum.

      • I second the thought about RB’s, using York, Stevenson, Agnew, and Ward (along with Wheaton and Cooks on the fly) makes so much more sense than riding one guy to death as has been done in the past (even if that guy is as good as Quizz).

  39. Be realistic here. Washington’s defense sucks. Against any good defense (Oregon) they will shut down the run and it’ll go back to one dimension.

I hope James can play next week. Guessing that’s a negative at this point.

    • The offense will have issues next Saturday for sure. I doubt anyone thinks the Beavers will light up Oregon’s defense. It was nice to see the offense play well though.

      • Absolutely.

It was nice to see Ward and Stevenson making pretty good decisions.

Ward still has a long way to go to be an inside runner. He puts his head down and crashes into whatever is in front of him.

  40. Coming back from turnovers in the second half was a very pleasant surprise to me; I think of overcoming that situation as something done only by a team which “knows how to win”.

Credit the D and some aggressive play calling. Hope James can go against the Ucks.

  41. Regarding the RBs

Stevenson is the guy. Use Ward here and there as a chance of pace, possibly on passing downs. I’d rather see Anderson (than York) at FB…Anderson on wheel routes is a weapon that’s not being used.

      • Like Riley, I don’t trust him with the ball. I don’t know how a RB goes about getting out of the circular pattern. It’s like a college grad looking for their first job, but all the jobs require experience..i.e. .”how can I gain experience if nobody will give me a job because I lack experience!?” etc. Agnew needs to figure out how to break that….maybe an injury or proving it over and over in practice, but at this point he’s earned the “fumbler” label.

    • Agreed. Also, Ward runs the draw pretty well; he had that big run early, and has had some good ones in other games. But he looks worse when we run it straight up the middle on first down every time; that will wear you down.

  42. Back from Reser, mystified by (but thankful for) Sarkisian’s strategy.

If Price was healthy enough to come into the game in the fourth quarter, why didn’t Price come into the game much earlier, before Washington was behind by 17 points? If Price was NOT healthy, why did Sark insert him towards the end, with Washington already behind by 17 points, and having little chance to win — why risk injury to Price at that point? Makes no sense to me….

Luckily for the Beavs, Price didn’t play much, Nick Montana bears no resemblance to his dad, and the Husky defense sucks.

Now, when OSU beats the Ducks next week, the Beavs will be 2011 champions not just of the State of Oregon, but of the Pacific Northwest (having already beaten WSU and now Washington).

    Go Beavs!

  43. Yeah that first touchdown looked good. Darren Thomas playing like crap… Ducks should put in the redshirt freshman.. he is a better quarterback.

  44. And the ducks upset by SC. 35-38, they missed the field goal that would have sent it to overtime with 5 seconds remaining. That was a thriller by the way.

I really think that LSU and Alabama are the 2 best teams in college football. They should be playing for the natty.

    • And if one of them wins te BCS national championship game it’s because nobody on their team has ever uttered the idiotic ebonics term “natty”.

      • You sound like a racist douchebag. I didn’t think that OSU still attracted people like you… I guess you might be from the times of William Pierce? Not to insult your favorite physics prof of course…

I used a colloquialism and apparently its ebonics… idiotic ebonics at that.

        • Nice try dickweed.

“Natty” is an idiotic made up word that has been regurgitated by dipshit 40 year old white boys in white as white gets Eugene fucking Oregon.

While we’re all impressed that you know big words like colloqialism, the fact is that you sound like a buttfuck when you say “natty”,and the brown man can stick up for himself if he finds me offensive.

  45. I am so glad the duuuuuuuucks got stewed in their own Autzen toilet bowl stadium. Black must be the ducks lucky color. Uniforms were black as well as all the drunk idiots in the stands. Oh, by the way………BLACK is the BEAVER color…….awesome and stealthy isn’t it. So the ducks stole OSU colors because they have no respect for their university at all. Arn’t the UofO colors green and yellow? But we all know BLACK is so much better than puke green.

    CONGRATULATIONS DUCKS!

Beavers Won their game and OH……..Stanford won their game also. Geeeeeee…………
Duck special……kleenex tissues on sale for duck fans at Walgreens.

    Fightingbeaver

    • I understand that we all dislike the ducks, but maybe if we took a page from their book and started to make creative uniforms, it might help recruiting and our overall image?

but yeah, on the plus side, this narrows the gap between them and us.

      • I just dislike the ducks wearing Oregon State colors. Do you see USC players and fans wearing light blue, do you see Huskies wearing WSU Red………NO. Basically, if the ducks concentrated on playing football rather than a pussy fashion statement, maybe they could be national champs.

Don’t get me wrong, it would be nice to have different uniform changes with Beavers Black and
Orange. But would you want puke green or yellow adoring our players uniforms or fan wear? I doubt it.

I tell every duck fan I see who is wearing a black hat, shirt, jacket, etc…….THANK YOU FOR WEARING OREGON STATE BEAVER COLORS. It works.

        Fightingbeaver

  46. Just home from Corvallis and am analysing the game with tivo.
Two faults stand out that I know have been mentioned before. Why does our oline seem to be really good at pass blocking while deplorable at run blocking? I played lineman in HS so I know they are somewhat 2 different skill sets but I never remember a disparity this severe. This leads me to believe that our OL aren’t terrible athletes but rather they’re not getting properly coached in run blocking.
My 2nd observation is that our LBs seem hesitant. I don’t mean they’re taking to long to read run or pass, but when they recognize a run they still kinda flutter towards the ball carrier instead of charging in ala Junior Seau.
On a positive note I am in serious love with both Crichton and Wynn. Now that our CBs are looking for the ball, if our LBs can improve just a bit in run support, we could grow into an excellent defense.

  47. It looks like posts are slowing here, I don’t know why, we have a big game coming up Saturday. I think Riley and gang are capable of putting together a winning game plan and getting team prepared, I just don’t know if he will do it. Riley has been so inconsistent this year.

Last year Riley had a week off to prepare for the Civil War game at home and he gave the team 3 days off for Thanksgiving………brilliant ha?

I hope the duckies wear their black uniforms again and their fans wear black, it would make Beavers feel right at home.

    Fightingbeaver

  48. If the Beavs keep it within 3 TDs I’ll be utterly shocked. I think the Ducks’ speed on offense will kill us as long as they don’t go away from their bread and butter spread like they did against USC. Also, they should start Bennett, from what I’ve seen (granted against Colorado & WSU) he’s faster and more accurate than Thomas.

  49. Folks, looks like we have a team chemistry issue. I am friends with several of the players and one of the worst kept secrets within the team besides Katz transferring is that one of the true freshmen that has gotten playing time this season is a bit of a diva and not a team player. I don’t want to say his name, so I’ll go the route of a NY Post blind item and say that it’s an offensive player and his brother plays in the NFL. Not hard to figure out. Again, not a secret within the team, and it has rankled quite a few staff and teammates.

    • Well, since this player doesn’t occupy a position lacking in comparable talent it’s not a huge issue, yes?

I’m guessing that dealing with divas is in every program and part of the coaching scope of work. That would be more difficult if this former De La Salle High School star was an every-snap player, I would think.

      • Maybe diva, maybe just wants to win. Maybe he is just not a yes man that is a cya guy. Who knows? Someone else has an agenda and wants to crush all internal disagreeement. The innuendo is not helpful mainly because you have identified the individual without identifying the accusers. This is information worthy of the Salem Witch Trials or the Spanish Inquisition.
