20.Aug.2012 Pac-12 Network, a Disaster so Far

There's still ten days left to resolve the issues, so not time to panic yet, but as of right now:

1. In California, I cannot watch Oregon State games, even with a Comcast subscription. They say the Oregon regional channel will be available live/online at some point. Apparently it will never be available on TV (at least not this season), so we're stuck with watching games on the computer.

2. Dish and Direct TV subscribers are still screwed (thought Wilner is saying Direct TV might have a deal soon).

3. Everyone has questions, nobody has answers. There is mass confusion on the Comcast message boards.

I don't understand how each team can receive 20mil per year, but the games aren't on TV…anywhere…

Does anyone gets these channels yet, and does anyone get the regional channels outside of their area? Frustrating! I can't believe I am saying this, but I'd rather have last year's setup. Very underwhelming and disorganized debut.

I haven’t really had a problem with the network so far. I am a Comcast subscriber and the main channel has worked fine from day 1. I’m under the assumption the other regional channels won’t really be running until closer to when fall sports begin. They would have nothing to broadcast during the offseason. The main channel has been playing reruns of classic Pac 10-12 games the past week, and I’ve watched a few while working. It’s been helping me get pumped up for the new season.
I’ve looked into the Comcast online and the Android/Apple apps, and the Pac-12 website those won’t be available until later in August. That’s fine since there really aren’t any games to watch until the end of the month anways. Right now I’ll just be patient and let them handle their business getting things put together in time for the season.
It is funny seeing the lack advertisers they have right now. I saw the same “Titanic-Own your own Hearth of the Ocean” commercial about 10 times in 2 hours. Do you really think the Pac-12’s target market is buying replica jewelry while watching football? too funny…

On the other hand, if I were a viewer without any access to the channel, I would be pissed right now. I think this is the first time I’ve been happy to be a Comcast customer.

I’m trying to stay calm, but each day I check and it’s not showing up I get more angry!

I might cancel this entirely and just bum the online subscription off my family back east. There’s no reason to buy cable if I don’t get the one channel I want…

For those of you interested….Angrybeaver is back as the center logo this year. There was speculation they may go with a OS to match the track, but my bet is that since they know there will be new branding next year that they wanted a smooth transition at that point. Makes sense. They may retire angrybeaver come 2013, but we don’t know yet. The logo stretches just beyond the 42.5 to the 42.5 and a little shy of 42-42. They got that part right and it does look like the Angrybeaver may be set up a bit better where he is not as flat and more like the 2000 Beavers and how the logo is supposed to be where the right side sits up a touch higher just like it is on the basketball court. They messed that up last time and had it incorrectly too flat. (In IMO that made the Beaver seem less confident so I am glad it appears to be better this time.)

I’m optimistic about the rebranding. I can live with giving the AngryBeaver one final year if he does get retired for 2013. His best chance of surviving I think is if the Reser logos disappear next year. I don’t see that happening with OSU still wearing ‘AL’, even on the practice jerseys. That seems like overkill for half a finished stadium unless Pat Reser has indeed promised a nice future contribution for the stadium. I expect Tinker will prefer to design his own beaver as a secondary logo rather then keep angrybeaver which has had its good run. That makes it a larger project and more in tune with the length the rebranding is taking us vs. other schools.

It will be interesting how much the rumored beavertail waffle endzone design looks like a checkerboard. I think it can be done for sure but am curious as to exactly how they pull the effect off. I expect these endzones, a diagonal OSU central logo and the Reser logos, which get more prime real estate then they deserve, next year. Would rather have a new secondary beaver of some sort take up the Reser spots as it would be far better at getting the brand out there to a national audience. The Reser thing kinda limits us and does not exactly lure in the creme de la creme of impressionable top recruits. How many 4 star recruits are we going to sell with it to pick OSU over other attractive options?

The rebranding definitely can help but details matter if you want maximum impact. Those Reser logos IMO put a cap on the Beavers, even with good rebranding, that would be higher with better logos that distinctly sell our university brand in their place. If the goal is to be a consistent national program that breaks into the rankings most years in the modern era, everything must be evaluated with the absolute purpose to get OSU to the top and stay there.

OSU-Nicholls State is only on one channel while Cal-Nevada will be on the other 6 channels. If the Pac-12 Network has 2 games on at the same time they should put one on the national channel and the other one on all of the regional channels.

I live in Hillsboro and have Comcast. I get channel 421 which is the regular Pac-12 channel and the Oregon regional channel is 420 I also get the HD version of the Oregon regional channel which is 720.
I’m not sure if these Pac-12 channels are included in my regular service or are part of my additional sports package which I’ve had for years anyway to watch the Speed Channel and some of the more obscure ESPN channels.

OT, we have from multiple sources that Ward and Jenkins are splitting touches with the 1s for the second consecutive day, with Woods and Agnew bringing up the 2s. Brown off the radar.

    • beavers4life says:

Riley had 2 in mind last week meaning the two in mind don’t need reps with the 1’s because they’ve already got the top 2 spots in his mind. So now, he’s trying to see if the others impress him enough to change his mind. Expect Agnew and Woods as our 2 backs this season. Agnew as the first and second down backs with Woods as the 3rd and short 4th and short back.

OT, with the whole, ‘Nothing to lose’ mentality, that the Beavs should have this season mean that Riley will do what the ducks do in going for it on yardage shorter than 4th and 2 when past their own 35 yard line? If so, that is a risk/reward type of play and I believe it would be entirely upon how the defense shakes out this season. What are your thoughts?

Good assessment. Your comment and Eggers tweet make me feel better. So does hope Dish could be live by season’s start. I think Riley should go for more 4th and 2.5 or less this year. Stats show it is worth it. More chances for TDs and the net gain from punting is not worth eliminating those opportunities too often. Players enjoy playing and being led confidently.

As far as Woods and Agnew, they are a good 1-2 punch. I say start Agnew but give Woods 11 or 12 runs. Maybe Agnew can get 115 yards against Nicholls St and Woods 85 for 200 between them. Throw in a Gwacham and/or a Mullaney TD and it will be a good first game that builds team chemistry and confidence before amping for the Badgers.

Seems like a cool idea,it’s prime real estate and I always assumed they would turn it into a mall or some stupid crap. Glad to see they’re doing something more constructive.

If someone is a Senior and they do everything right and went to school/ practice they should get their school paid for. That is a rule meant to protect the players if you think about it. Blaming the players for that is stupid- blaming the coach for mismanagement makes much more sense.

Sad news at Reser Stadium…they filled in the orange outline of Oregon State with White. ๐Ÿ™ You can see the E in State in the North endzone. They should have left the orange outline; it looked a lot better that way. oh well…hope Tinker has something better lined up.

I have been with Direct TV since 1995. I called Direct TV and asked to talk with a supervisor about the Pac 12 Network. The supervisor told me that they are still in negotiations with the Pac 12 and
hope to reach agreement by September 1st. Supervisor also said the Pac 12 National and Regional channels will be sold under the Premium Sports package, whatever that is. She also indicated that I will get an email when Pac 12 Network is added to package.

I think it used to be called the “Sports Pack” and it will cost you about $13. I get it every year for the three or four months of college football season. Unless, DirecTV comes through, I’m going backwards into the 90’s when maybe three or four games were on and the rest I had to listen on the radio.

Although Hunt said Lindsay is the primary FB reporter for the O it is nice to see him doing several stories while Lindsay does the fluff.
Note that Cliff says Obum was “rested” for this scrimmage, Hunt says he was out due to an ankle injury. For this one, I’m hoping Cliff is correct……..probably will turn out that it is a minor ankle concern. Obum is one of the guys who could make a big difference this season, needs to stay healthy.
11 days till we get an indication of what this team and staff are all about. GO BEAVS

I think he rested his injured ankle. It doesn’t sound serious.
Mullaney seems to be the guy to watch, he might have an impact this year. I would say that the WR’s look solid. I still need to see where the TE’s are at. The QB’s are 50-60 this Fall, now that gets me excited, but I wonder where the or how the Defense will be? I worry about the Safeties and LB’s.

I just cannot believe the reality of this first week Pac12 network failure. OSU and Cal both play 12:30-3:30. Then rerun womens soccer for 4 hours. Then the next game at 730. Result in Bay Area, CA is that they will show the Cal game in HD. AND both standard def channels. No OSU game available on any level of service. Followed by no game!!!

This is pathetic. This is entirely the fault of Bob de careless and an athletic depart that has Parkinson’s by default. Thats harsh, but thats true. Either Change the game time to the open slot or get the game on one of the 3 available Pac12 channels(not in oregons region). Seriously.
