Off Kilter Thought Regarding Nicholls State

78

A lot of people are blaming Bob D, and I think rightfully so since the agreed upon date to call this game was Thursday. That means he could have told the N. State AD, "I hear ya, but let's wait until tomorrow to officially decide."

Question is, why didn't he?

Is is conceivable he saw the opportunity to take the easiest win off Riley's schedule and put more pressure on him? An opportunity to reduce the likelihood of 6 wins, and thus shave another year off the lifetime contract?

I don't know, but when the AD cancels the game a day early, it makes you wonder…at least it made me wonder. Just thought I'd throw the idea out there.

Of course, it's more likely he's just an idiot (Occam's razor). Also evidenced by his wanting to reschedule this game Championship Week (nothing like those at the top setting expectations high). /sarc

  1. Not really disagreeing but I think it was the right call for when it was made.

    Couple points to consider,

    1. The brunt of the hurricane was at Thibodeaux, Isaac went to the west of New Orleans. Thibadeaux is about 65 miles west of New Orleans. Check out any hurricane tracker and it goes right over Thibodeaux.

    2. Reading the newspaper from there, the daily coment, it looks like there was a fair amount of damage and power outages. Mentioned they were under curfew as well. Doesn’t sound like Nicholls St would be able to get their stuff together in time to play.

I think it was a fair thing to do in cancelling the game even if it creates a lot of hassles and grumblings from OSU fans.

It is a shame that either side wasn’t proactive and had Nicholls St either practice elsewhere or come earlier. This could have been avoided all together. However it appears that the players are local(based on news articles) and were tending to their families so this may be a moot point.

    • But why not cancel it Thursday and at least give yourself the option in the event that things change? The original date was Thursday. What you said is all true, but it doesn’t explain canceling the game Wednesday afternoon.

      • Cancel too late and there will be many people who don’t hear about it in time and make their way to Corvallis to find an empty stadium is probably why.

Complaints either way. But less by canceling the game earlier.

        • Also, if they waffled on the decision and reversed the cancellation, it would be a giant cluster —-. Once people hear of the first decision, they stop listening. Once I heard the game was off, I started making other plans. Not going stop everything again to make plans to attend the game on basically a 1 day notice.

    • Angry, I have to throw the flag and call a penalty on you for this one. While I appreciate that, as a fan, you are looking at this situation through finely calibrated strategic glasses that make this lost (presumed) win change the whole basis for which you’ve prepared a season’s rants…I mean, analysis. You feel vested in the schedule, and to have it torn from your grip by forces larger than your ego is painful.

But, there you sit, cable-less, playing your participation as a fantasy through your computer. While you add value to the sturm und drang that is Beaver Fandom, let’s face it – it’s all just a fantasy. Except for the the people crashing into each other on the field of play, for everyone else, it’s just a fantasy. So lighten up, Frances.

This decision was not a fantasy for me. Even on a pre-conference game like this one, I would normally get called in on Saturday to work because of the scope of Gameday in Corvallis, a fact which which for me means overtime. The proverbial butterfly fluttering its wings over an ocean six-thousand miles southeast from here a month ago means money out of my pocket, which I use for food on the table for my kids – it’s not a fantasy for me. And I don’t claim to have even a tiny fraction of a claim to any real impact in my life that decisions like this mean compared to the vast majority of others for whom this postponement is a real impact in their lives.

And you know what? Having lived through a natural disaster myself (no, I’m not talking about SacState, dipwad!), my sympathy for those affected directly by the storm makes my short paycheck in a few weeks seem like nothing worth worrying about, let alone blogging nastily about.

Wait until Thursday to make the call? Why? If it was clear on Wednesday it wasn’t gonna happen, then kudos to Stubbs and DeCarolis and Riley and everyone involved in making an early frickin’ call. Too many people in the Nicholls State program were far more vested than you will ever be in what this storm meant to their lives to hold the decision to make it more palatable for you and the myriad other bloggers and pundits safely ensconced miles from any physical harm, let alone any lifestyle alteration. Looking at the Weather Channel’s maps from the comfort of your sofa means jack sh!t to most of the people on the ground – power is out for many, water and sewer aren’t working for many, roads are closed for many, many families are disrupted – Isaac, whether you wish to admit it or not, has changed the lives of tens of thousands of people in Thibodeaux, in New Orleans, in Biloxi, in many cities, towns and parishes across the gulf coast.

And you’re bummed ’cause the Beavers can’t get a “W” on Saturday. Shame on you.

Blaming Bobby D. won’t help – it wasn’t his call. It was the sun, the wind, the currents, and forces beyond even Bobby D’s magnificent inabilities to control.

Bitch about the Pac-12 networks. Bitch about Larry Scott. Bitch about Ryan or Biden or the tops of the tickets. Bitch about Sun Tzu. But bitching about this makes you seem less than human.

The game’s been postponed because there are other people in the world than Beaver fans.

      Move on.

      • The hurricane passed, and the game could have been played. Everyone is saying this. I guess you think the Rivals publishers are dipwads, too?
You’re playing the sympathetic card because it makes you look like a good guy.

      • “And I don’t claim to have even a tiny fraction of a claim to any real impact in my life that decisions like this mean compared to the vast majority of others for whom this postponement is a real impact in their lives.”

I’ve reread this sentence ten times, and it still makes little sense. I break it down like this:
“I don’t claim to have a claim to this compared to others for whom this is an impact.”

        Did you mean:
“As I will demonstrate in the next paragraph, I have lived through one natural disaster, and you haven’t. But I won’t let that choplogic…er… irrefutable fact keep me from torturing the English language and being self-righteous about my ability to pity others from afar… which, by the way, is only bad if you’re not trying to conflate two relative ideas in order to fail at an attempt to make them absolute.”

Friends don’t let friends drive while equivocating.

        • You’re right: I should have brought my thought to a cogent finish, but my keyboard was wearing out (and my teeth were itching).

  2. I concur angry. Strange not to just wait for the agreed decision time. I can’t stand Bob D though and don’t believe he ever thinks things through.

    • Again, you are not explaining why they announced it Wednesday. The ADs could have agreed to it over the phone and then announced it Thursday. I have a feeling they might have retracted the cancellation if they did that. It came off as hasty to everyone (but you, apparently). Rivals/BB publisher is questioning the decision and calling it hasty, and they are apologists just like you!

You also didn’t address the second point, which is an AD trying to reschedule this game championship week. Do you understand what message that sends? It is so bad that it probably deserves its own post.

      • As a child, Bendbeaver used to poke sticks in hornets nests just to see what would happen. He’s grown up to find playing in the comments section of a blog gives similar excitement without the danger.

          • Why would I make fun of you? It’s not like you think Budweiser or Coors are good beers.

Btw… a hornet bit me in the knee today. I hadn’t used my second wheelbarrow in a while, and I didn’t notice a nest hanging from it as I carted it away. Two second bite and the sucker burned for a good 30 seconds.

          • Most people don’t realize that a yellowjacket can bite the hell out of you in addition to stinging you.

My brother parked his truck under a bald faced hornet nest over by wickiup elk huntng yesterday. Got popped on the back of the neck and the hand. Mean little bastards when they get pissed.

  3. Nichols State on September 1st: unveil the new team, enjoy the sun, get ready for Wisconsin = Bring it On

Nichols State in December: = what is the point?

    • It is going to be tough to play Nic state and play in the PAC 12 championship game the same day.
They better really stress the cardio this year.

    • I only caught the west side of the storm (always the weak side of a hurricane) in Lafayette, whereas folks over towards NOLA got it worse. That being said, the storm itself was pretty minor (except to about a thousand folks in Plaquemines and LaPlace who got flooded out when the levies got topped). The storm has since passed, we’re going on day two of nice weather, and the NOLA airport reopened this morning. So, I really see no reason why they shouldn’t be able to hop on a plane today and be there in time for the game tomorrow.

The person really at fault for all of this is Al Roker. I get so tired of seeing idiots ‘journalists’ standing on the water’s edge down here along the gulf in their little LL Bean windbreakers getting blown around and drenched while they tell the country how powerful and devastating some storm is going to be. The stupid 24-hour news cycle likes to blow every little storm way out of proportion for ratings, and people end up needlessly freaking out about it.

Finally, lets not all sit here and think we’re the only poor saps to get screwed over by this storm. A&M’s game with LaTech is postponed as well, and LaTech has NO excuses. Ruston didn’t get touched.

  4. I think this move is all sorts of stupid. Just cancel the fucking game. There’s no use in playing it except to add another year to Riley’s contract if it’s used to get us into a crap bowl.

  5. “Savvy scheduling move gives Oregon State an edge over its Pac-12 peers”

    http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaab-the-dagger/savvy-scheduling-move-gives-oregon-state-edge-over-214806098–ncaab.html

Obviously this headline and story aren’t related to the football team. I know Coach K uses a similar tactic each season by scheduling Duke to play a non-conference road game vs UNC Greensboro, to get his team acclimated to the arena where the ACC tournament is played at the end of the season. Nice move by Coach Rob. Also, I didn’t realize they were playing at the MGM Grand. I’m definitely going now.

  6. Personally, I am disappointed there isn’t a game, especially when I see that there will be games actually played in Baton Rouge and New Orleans. So, I tend to believe that they could’ve gotten the game as scheduled.

However, I don’t know the logistics of the situation. They hadn’t practiced all week (maybe didn’t even have a game scheme implemented). Since they only have outdoor facilities they were not going to get any practice in before the game, that sounds unfair. As far, as changing the dates to Sunday or Monday. I think they probably would have kept the same travel time and they get out here and get to practice Sat and Sun, but that means two more nights for everybody in hotels? But then you are talking about getting approx 70 personnel and players on a new flight at short notice to fly at another time. For a small university it may have been just too EXPENSIVE for them to find alternate flights? If that’s the case it might not have been cost effective for the Nicholls to do the game, because they would have spent all the money they got for coming out here initially. So it would be a lose-lose for Nicholls.

Maybe BDC could’ve have sweeten the pot a little for them, to make it worth their while. Like propose to cover some of their expenses? Also, maybe promise another game with them where they would get another payday?

I don’t think they should have come out with “decision made on Thursday night” and then come out a day early and cancel. Maybe they talked these things and they just didn’t make financial sense for both schools. But I think BDC should have taken the attitude lets do everything possible to see if we can get this in, and by the early cancel it leaves questions as to wherther he did do that.

    • I really don’t care what “fuddy duddy” BDC says or does. I was following the Perish web site where Nicholls State is located which was giving updates from the head Coach. All a long the head coach was consistent in stating a decision would be made sometime Thursday. The only hitch would be those players and staff who went home had to stay and help their families with disaster issues. He probably contacted OSU on Wednesday and told them it would be unsafe to try to bring the players together because of the conditions of roads, etc.

All in all, arguing about this stuff is rather silly and juvenile. Lets get on with it and get behind the game September 8th with Wisconsin. That’s where we need things to happen.

    • BDC covering some of their expenses???? What do you think goes on when D1 programs schedule patsies? We have to pay them to come get crushed by us in the first place. They were likely never to pay a single dime for this game.

  7. Getting a big crowd on Dec. 2 when the P-12 Championship game is being played will require BDC to give away unlimited popcorn.
On a positive note, Utah was scoreless against Northern Colorado (0-11) after the first quarter in Salt Lake.
Looks like the Utes could be a Beaver win!

  8. Ucla 22-17, after jumping out to a 19-0 (two blocked PAT’s), Rice stormed back, things settled now.
Hundley’s first snap he went 72yds touchdown, and then threw 13 yd pass, and Franklin ran for a 74 yd touchdown. Rice moving the ball effectively just outside the red zone, now

No Colorado has looked like its ther first game of the season, with dumb mistakes, down 21-0 at Half. Travis Wilson a big tall volleyball/surfer dude played wildcat and scored on a TD run. They missed an easy chippy field goal as half expired after NC punter knee touched on the 15 yard line catching the snap with 17 seconds left.

  9. Watching this UCLA-Rice game, UCLA’s defense looks pretty bad. Unless they make significant strides the Beavers should be able to throw all over their secondary. Pass rush isn’t too impressive and the secondary looks bad.

  10. Hundley poor vision over the middle gets picked. He looked he got happy feet and through it without checking the defense. Rice QB, down after a sack.

  11. Ucla tackles new QB on running back exchange, fumbles and take it back for a TD. 35-24, another blocked PAT!!! What a game, wow

  12. Here is kind of my thought on the whole playing the possible make up game December 1st. If the Beavers ends up with the best conference record out of the teams from the north, and earn a trip to the conference championship, the out of conference games won’t matter, we play in the championship and say “sorry Nicholls State but we have bigger fish to fry”. If we aren’t in the championship then we play them.

      • The teams with the best conference records play in the conference championship. Oregon State isn’t losing any conference games by not playing this game. So, in the hypothetical situation let’s say that Oregon State goes undefeated in conference play and loses to BYU and Wisconsin. We go to the conference championship on Dec. 1 thus not needing/wanting to play Nichols State we would “have bigger fish to fry”.

In another hypothetical we are mathematically eliminated from playing for the Pac 12 championship, we play Nichols State for a possible bowl game berth.

It isn’t for sure that we are playing the 1st, it is a possibility, but not set in stone.

the scenario that would most screw the beavers is if they were at 5-6 and Nichols State makes the FCS playoffs.

I’m sorry if that didn’t come clear in my last post, after rereading it, it does seem a bit confusing.

    • BYU looks more than good. They look tough on both sides of the ball. Play calling is awesome and fans and team all fired up. Tough combination to beat.

WSU’s defense is getting worn down and their quarterback needs to settle down. Another interception. They might be hungry when they reach OSU, don’t underestimate them quite yet.

    • BYU wins 30-6. WSU has no running game, but clealy can play some D, as BYU didnt score a td in the whole second half. They only got about 150 yds total O in the second half.

I wouldnt write off WSU just yet.

  13. WSU had only 3 rushing yards in the entire first half. This plays to the Beavs strength of pass defense. We win this game in Corvallis easily. Two picks for poyer with one run back for a score.
Looking more and more like 5-6 (Nichols St, WSU,ASU, Utah, Arizona and UCLA) wins is in the bag.

      • Agreed, I think Charlie Stubbs chumped out of the game because they weren’t going to have practice time during the week. They could have practiced somewhere else, but they didn’t. I bet Riley nixed the Sunday-Monday idea because it cuts out prep time for Wisconsin. But the blame for this fiasco should all go to Stubbs.

    • The heavy rains is NOT an excuse. Those schools in LA KNOW there can be nasty storms, so it up to them to have travel as secure as possible, with alternate plans already made.

Cant come for the game as scheduled? OK….thats an L for you, a W for us, and NO MONEY.

This is total bullshit and I cant believe the wusses who are excusing it.

  14. Oh well, time to get ready for Wisconsin State. Or at least thats what I’m calling them for now. Always bugs me when we travel across country and they act like they don’t know who we are, or where we are from. Often just referring to the team as Oregon. Or worse Orrgone. Anyways, Ive always felt like that plays into our inferior psychology. So I’d like to turn the tables as much as possible this week and speak down on Wisconsin State like they don’t belong while maintaining innocent sportsmanship. Angry, are you gonna find a Wisconsin Blogger to share analysis with?

  15. I think it’s fine that the game was called on Wednesday. If BDC knows on Wednesday that there will not be a game, then it would be silly to wait until Thursday. Some people that were planning to travel to Corvallis for the game probably appreciate knowing as early as possible.

With that said, this game is unappealing in December after the Civil War. Nicholls St. should have to forfeit.

    • How can BDC KNOW there cant be a game?????

NS said, hey we are not coming? Then you claim the forfeit that is rightfully yours. You DONT do something MORONIC and reschecule a game only good for a warmup, for later in the year.

And you DO NOT deflate all fan and player hopes, and talk about doing it the week of the title game.

All thos who are excusing what BDC did, should be CONDEMNED to att4end that game in Dec.
