Chip Kelly Leaving–Good or Bad for OSU?

123

Do you guys feel it's good he left because it means we can now possibly beat Oregon, or is it bad he left in that it takes pressure off Riley and the staff to raise their level? Also, some feel it's bad for the conference as a whole (I see the reasoning here, but as one team sinks another usually rises).

I am personally glad he left. He was too good. The side of me that wants to win games trumps everything else, and we have a better chance to win more games now.

  1. Oregon will remain a good team for a while at least, so I don’t think Riley can start feeling like it’s an automatic win vs them. You gotta think deep down that guy still wants revenge for those missed Rose Bowls, plus, he has a better chance of getting there now. I’m with you on the “win games trumps everything else” view. It, might help us a little with in state recruiting too. I say good for OSU

  2. Bad for us, good for you. Now curious to see our next chapter.

I’d like to see us go for Coach Pete. I think the guy could kill it at Oregon with the additional support. But seems like the players really support Helf as coach-in-waiting.

  3. As I have stated about basketball in the last couple of weeks, I don’t care much for BDC and I think Kelly’s success at Oregon raised the bar that Mike Riley needed to do a better job recruiting. With this said, I hope that MR continues to improve recruiting and developing talent. Hopefully, he will wise up and get rid of Langsdork and Banker, but I don’t see that happening, but I do think that if Riley continues to want to improve, he has a good chance with Kelly heading to the NFL. The question is how good is Mark Helfrich?

  4. Good topic. The Oregon flowering monopoly (or is it money?) needs to be checked to ensure a level field of play. On the other hand you are correct. Great competition should float your boat as well.

  5. I’d rather he stayed, took whatever punishment is coming, and had to win under those conditions.

I say that even though I couldn’t foresee Riley beating Kelly, unless UO was decimated by injuries.

In the end, all that really matter is what BDC and Riley do to get OSU to a Rose Bowl. That goal is as limited by Riley as it was by Kelly. I suspect Riley will end up looking a lot like Rich Brooks, consistent, reliable, good guy, and if he sticks around long enough, he may end up in a Rose Bowl and get trounced.

    • Nonsense – (imo) I don’t think sanctions had little if anything to do with CK’s decision. He had the best of both worlds; He could stay at Oregon and continue his winning ways or hold out for exactly what he wanted with the Eagles. The Eagles blinked, renegotiated, and begged. Chip is on his way.

  7. So you’re saying there’s a chance? an old cliche but to be the best, you’ve got to beat the best.

A win or wins over Kelly would have propelled the program to new highs. Being the little brother is not fun at all.

Also, I don’t think that many if any coaches are following Kelly. Many are lifers there so they are going nowhere with a succession plan in place. Continuity will be there.

Look at Stanford, they lose their coach and coordinators, and go 23-4.

  8. this is good for everybody but the ducks. hellfrich could come in and keep the ball rolling the same way shaw’s done at stanford, i guess, but shaw didn’t have to take over with impending sanctions looming, the way lane kiffin did at SC. it’ll be a slow fall though. they’ll still be a top five team next year. hopefully with a post season ban though.

  9. Are we kidding, this is fantastic news for the Beavs. Don’t get me wrong that outfit is loaded with talent and even Langsdorf could run that for a year or two. (Anyone remember Jimmy Anderson? OSU basketball coach) Point being that having the right players coached in the system is three fourths of the battle.

This combined with NCAA violations could bring them down to earth. I was encouraged to see this article talking about how Mark Emmert hates the ducks. We should send him some footage of the Kenny Wheaton’s pick the night before the lay down the verdict.

    • 1. “with no real statement from Chip Kelly saying he was staying, no media conference by Chip Kelly saying he was staying” – Hmmm – someone on AB pointed that out, but I don’t remember who.

      2. Why is Ed Ray so powerful in the NCAA when it is generally acknowledged that he doesn’t care much about athletics?

  10. This quote from the Chip about the players reaction says a lot: “they’re excited too…program has always been a next man up operation”.

Translation: loyalty does not live here.

    • I don’t know, think of Masoli>Thomas>Mariotta, Blount>James>Barner>Thomas…the system, from recruiting to implementation, is plug and play.

I don’t know that they’ll sustain the high level of on-the-field performance Kelly engineered, but its not supposed to be about one person. Personally, I think that’s good management. If you create a vision for what you want to achieve, communicate it well, and everyone understands it, you make the program stronger.

I mean, we talk about the stagnation at OSU, I don’t see the reasoning in criticizing Kelly for moving on after 5(?) or 6 (?) years there. Its the WAY he does it, and the fact that he’s leaving before some kind of penalties/sanctions come down.

Otherwise, you have Bellotti taking the program as far as he could (Holiday, Cotton, Fiesta?) and moving on, and Kelly going to the Fiesta(?), NC, rose bowl, Fiesta and moving on.

I’d have liked it if Riley won the Alamo, moved on, and the next guy took the program to a higher level…

      • Kelley isnt just about his system. He is about getting huge energy out of the players, and belief in themselves. Others have used no huddle, and spread option. He must know how to teach the fine points to the players.

  11. My cynical side is hoping that Chipster got some first rate information on the pending sanctions and knew it was time to hit the road. That would be my best case scenario.

  12. Grace Kelly, Emmett Kelly or Gene Kelly could coach Oregon to wins over the Beavs for the foreseeable future. Their coaches have nothing to do with the stagnation in the OSU football program. Bray is a step in the right direction but kicking Locey upstairs is proof of Riley’s unwillingness and inability to make the tough calls and break up his little club.

So celebrate Chip’s defection, but I suspect they will just reload and run the Beavs out of Autzen next year to prove it. JB

PS: I wouldn’t take that job if they asked, It’s way too loud in that stadium.

  13. What may have happened is that Chip threw out a big number (with conditions) and the Eagles blinked. They interviewed a few guys, then saw the potential future of the NFL with Griffen, Wilson and Kap. Philly needs a new identity and direction. Philly needs a new qb and system. They then decided that they did not want to be behind the curve. They paid up.

  14. Kelly:
As a college coach, he is very good. He brought a new dimension to the playbook.
As a person, he is an asshole. Testy, secretive, talks out of one side of his mouth (looks suspicious).
As a man, he is a cheater and now a coward. He cheated and now he is deserting the fans who, even in the forthcoming NCAA wreckage, still want to put their faces between his man boobs.

  15. This should be a golden opportunity for Riley to raise OSU to the dominant program in the state if he has the will and personal ability to do so. I am not sure he can beat a rookie coach in Helfrich though. Riley’s record in big games that matter is dismal. A few obvious things like not staying balanced in the attack through all 4 quarters cost us 2 great chances for the Rose Bowl this year and OSU blew the chance to finish in the Top 10 with a win over Texas. Kelly is gone but will OSU under Riley and BDC be able to fill a big chunck of the void?

    The Wicked Duck is Dead:
    http://beaverbyte.com

    • LOL … Riley has shown in his career that he is NOT the man to take OSU to the top rung of the conference. You are asking of him qualities he doesnt have. Aint gonna happen.

      • Mike Riley just led his team to a 3rd place finish when we were picked to finish 10th or 11th. When I think of the ‘rungs’ in the PAC 12, I think ‘tiers’, and there are 4 tiers. Top 3 is the top tier. He also did this with mediocre QBs who will likely get better, and mediocre running backs who will also get better.

        • hellobeavers, given that rsteve was talking about Riley’s CAREER, I Gotta disagree on a couple points.

The whole “turned a 3-9 team into 9-4” must be viewed in the context of Riley being responsible for BOTH records.

Top tier, I’ll buy the thought that top 3 is top tier (but really depends on the strength of the conference). However, there is more to it than that. Top tier teams/coaches don’t choke away a shot at the RB two years in a row, or perform as we saw in the Alamo or against Washington, I’ll stop without recounting several examples from ’10/’11.

Mediocre running backs? Really? Yes, they will improve IF the play calling allows them to.

Seems to me that to be “top tier” requires consistent top results over an extended period of time. Riley appears to be a top tier person, I’m ever hopeful that he becomes a top tier coach.

          • again. lol. Riley is already the longest tenured coach in the conference. He has never got to the top rung. So I think he has ably demonstrated what he is capable of…..in REALITY.

In theory he is capable of top rung, He has shown he CAN do top level coaching, He has no fluke beat teams much more talented.

BUT …. he has also shown that he doesnt stay focussed. He doesnt really care about winning, all the time.

And if you want to talk about what he did this year with lesser rinning backs, lets talk about what he did with Quiz Rogers, an NFL quality running back, that last year he had him. Not much.

Thats our Riley. He has the ability but not the will oower. Like Angry says, the guy has a win cap…..

  16. OT- kearseley recommitted to BYU, per scout, no shock there, hearing about his renewed enthusiasm for the Mormons, but sucks nonetheless. Damn, I had really hoped for his commitment. I hope Harlow doesn’t waver now.

    • If he goes on his mission right away, we’ll get a second shot at him. And of course if he did come here, he might go on his mission and go somewhere else.

Not the biggest loss because his contribution wouldn’t be felt for 3-4 years.

  17. Several thoughts.

First, it was good for OSU to have Kelley in the conference. Oregon as a constant BCS team….always two pac12 teams in BCS. The conference was elevated, even with USC on a downturn.

Next, OSU wannt going to rise to the Kelley/UO level, even on an up year. Riley is too detatched at times and will always lose a game or two he should win. Angry’s old win-cap.

UO will not go far down without Kelley, and with NCAA sanctions, as USC showed. This was an aqful year for them, and still went 7-6.

UO will be beatable now, dont care who replaces Kelley. But it wont be easy — he built a very strong program. That wont go away.

I dont think Riley falls off, as thru Kelley we got booster concern and pressure applied and I think Riley will continue the win-cap guy…..good seasons the norm, but never really good.

Cant blame Kelley for going, as he gets to try the top level in his profession. But he could have been more honest about it. That whole not going, and then suddenly….going!….kinda sucks.

  18. You know, but for Kelly the ducks could be National champs now. He finally got it for always going for it on 4th down against Stanford. I think with Uncle Phil a trained monkey could have gone to a bcs game every year. So if OSU gets there own Uncle Phil, we could be in a BCS every year with our trained monkeys

  19. If what I hear about Helfrich is correct, I really don’t see a lot changing for at least a few years – the Duck Proganda machine has been cranking for over a decade when they were plastering billboards of their QB across the country from NY to LA. They have the spotlight…you can’t watch a Sportscenter segment on CF and not hear about the Ducks. Recruits love them before they ever talk to them. Anecdotal evidence follows:

I was having trouble with the audio on my HD channels the night of the Fiesta Bowl, so I called Dish Network. I ended up talking to a young lady in the customer support department in Virginia…she asked which game I was trying to watch and who I was rooting for. As soon as I mentioned the Ducks she couldn’t stop talking about the uniforms and how much she loves them. She grew up in North Carolina. She’s never been to the West Coast. Oregon’s brand is out there.

Will the Ducks lose some of their fearlessness? Possibly. Will their flawless execution begin to falter…maybe, but I don’t see it happening until the guys who lived it with Chip cycle out of the system. And maybe not at all depending on how much of what we saw on Saturdays was attributable to Helfrich.

And thanks for dropping by UofDuck…In case you were wondering, I still hate everything green and yellow…or whatever other color they decide to incorporate into their costumes.

  20. Anybody know who she’s talking about? Is this the academic casualty (Walker?) I heard about earlier in the week?

        • There was some tweeter discussion, and Kearlsey said follow my new future teammate Sean Harlow, however they played together at the Semper Fi Bowl, so it could have been in regards to that. I think Harlow was leaning for weeks before about flipping.

          • I think Harlow is pretty solid. He just tweeted late last night:

            Sean Harlow ?@ballsoharlow

In home visit was great! Cant wait to be up at osu for spring ball!

Wondering if they pulled Phillips scholarship because of more promising talent coming on board? Still haven’t seen anything concrete saying Kearsley is going to BYU. He’s supposed to announce next week at some announcement party he’s putting together. Really doubt he would let his true feelings be known on the subject prior to his announcement party. Often in these situations, the coaches know prior to the announcement, so maybe Riley knows we won’t be in need of Phillips talents anymore?

      • Angry’s got to be pleased with this news. I also didn’t see much in this guy, career backup at best.

Still would be nice to get one more OL for this class or maybe one of the DTs can switch to OL.

  21. Here is the clip from Northwest Prep Report:

“To be fair this is not just UW. It is happening all over the Nation. The Beavers just had the same thing happen with top in state linemen Skyler Phillips of Churchill High School and good old Lane Kiffen just lost one of the Top Players in the Country for USC in Defensive End Kylie Fitts because he went back on his promises to the kid.”

    the article
    http://www.northwestprepreport.com/sammie-long-of-lakes-moves-on-after-huskies-refuse-to-honor-their-offer

      • With Phillips out(?), one WR maybe not qualifying, I’d agree that this kid looks very worthy of picking up, even though I think LB is a greater need.

He looks good on film and would certainly be motivated.

    • He has a Tex Tech visit scheduled I think for this weekend. He has WSU, TTU, and OSU in the mix. He has been a fan of Texas Tech, and that is why Leach got a visit, because he loved him when he was there. I gut feeling is that he wants to stay in Texas and near home. However, Brent Brennan tweeted that he is on his way to Texas, so I think he might have an in-home with him, and maybe he can sway him.

  22. Read on another blog that Jermel Walker is tweeting about his grade issues and it’s sounding like he’ll have to greyshirt if he commits to OSU. I can’t find his twitter account though, does anybody know his handle?

    • I especially liked the last part this quote, “famous for his fast paced offense, gutsy fourth down play calls, and strict policy of player conduct and standards”

Until he needed Blount in the CW.

I also noticed that he wasn’t wearing a visor when introduced to the Phily reporters.

  23. Are these all guys from the Oregon staff? I know Azzinaro is, and Lyght was I think. The other guys seem to have been involved but I don’t know what their roles were. Sometimes it’s the behind the scenes guys who make the biggest impact (like Bray for the Beavs this year)

    Jen Beyrle ?@JenBeyrle

Source close to UO FB program tells me that Jerry Azzinaro, Greg Austin, Matthew Harper and Todd Lyght are going to Philly with Chip Kelly.

      • Azzinaro is the D-line coach and the others were grad assistants. Must have been pretty important guys if they’ve parlayed a grad assistant position into a full time NFL gig.

        • Todd Lyght is a former NFL cornerback who had a successful career. IF I recall correctly he also got busted for cocaine possession once. Or something like that.

          • I don’t remember Lyght getting in trouble for cocaine. I remember Darryl Henley getting caught for trafficking then trying to hire a prison guard to kill the judge and his ex-girlfriend while he was in prison for that crime. I was a friend of his younger brother Eric in college, and he got caught up in the whole situation only because some inmate in prison with Darryl copped a shorter sentence for saying Darryl told him Eric couldn’t (Eric said wouldn’t) make some mega drug deal while Darryl was in the pokey. That was the only evidence against him. I still find it hard to believe he had anything to do with it.

  24. such teasers…..commence beaverbyteboner

    Shawn Heilbron ?@ShawnHeilbron

This morning I was shown the actual samples of our new football jerseys for next season. Wow! The Beavers are going to look good in 2013.

  25. I don’t like that colleges can pull offers/scholarship but kids can’t transfer at anytime. The good new is we don’t have room because we are getting better player to commit but it sucks for Skylar.

    • Yeah. And we’re always pretty solid at skill positions. Kinda feel like you always need to have a few hoss’s per class and it might not be the best idea. Unless there’s other issues not mentioned yet.

  26. The Beaver OC is responsible for recruiting parts of Washington, Idaho and Montana. The Special Teams coach skates by with Northern California. Are they looking for Bigfoot?

  27. Again, not to take any joy in UO’s current and forthcoming off-field challenges, but as much as Kelly’s departure hurts UO, the real and potential loss of multiple assistants would seem to hurt just as much. If Kelly left and hired NFL veteran coaches and UO stays otherwise intact, that’s one thing, but taking multiple people with him means UO has to find out if Helfrich(sp?) not only can coach, but identify, hire, and work successfully with new assistants. This has to affect on-the-field performance, let alone recruiting:

    http://www.oregonlive.com/ducks/index.ssf/2013/01/chip_kellys_departure_leaves_o.html#incart_river

    • Wait… Monte Kiffin resigns in part because of how the Ducks scored on his defense, and USC goes out and tries to hire the one DC whose defense gave up more points to the Toe-jams than anyone else?

Meanwhile, Monte has to be the
