    • I’ve noticed his absence as well. He committed that stupid foul against UofH and was suspended by the league for the first half of the Utah game.

Riley didn’t take him to Utah at all, story was that he’d rather take a player who was available for the entire game. He then was suspended from a game (SDSU?) for violation of team rules.

He is still listed on the roster and his stats show participation in only 2 games (EWU & UofH). Riley initially said, “it takes 4 guys to replace him”…because of versatility and special teams play. He must really be in the doghouse?

    • he’s out looking for other coaches daughters to impregnate. Keep it on the dl though. He doesn’t want them to see him coming

  1. I’m starting to get really annoyed watching Woods run the ball. I feel like every time he gets it he immediately pauses. JUST RUN.

    • I don’t understand the hesitancy to giving Brown a chance. There’s only 2 or 3 teams in the nation worse than us running the football. As a coach, wouldn’t you want to try anything to improve that number?!

  2. We’ve thrown at their one CB every single pass so far, pretty hilarious. He picked up a PI and we just scored a TD on the ground. Gonna be a long day for that kid.

  3. The announcers were saying Crichton is expected to be a 1st round pick this year. I supremely doubt that unless he picks up a ton of sacks(only 1 so far this year) or sticks around one more year. He’s a stud but he doesn’t stand out on our weird, hot-and-cold D-Line.

  4. Enger cleared out 2 guys on the goal line TD by Ward. It was nice.

I’m thinking a few wrinkles are coming after Cal started jumping the bubble screens.

    • I saw that too. I refuse to believe the lack of running game is because of the lineman. This is one of the best lines we’ve had in years. Image what Quizz, Bernard, etc. could have done with these guys instead of the walk-ons they were stuck behind.

  5. Our special teams gunners have been awesome, just shutting down all returns. The easiest way for a bad team to steal a game is a few special teams plays, and they are crushing it right now.

We’ve handed the ball to a RB 3 times in 3 drives so far. One score, two 3-and-outs. Just an unsustainable ratio, Cal is dropping 7 back every time.

  6. Cal’s best defender, Jackson, rolls his ankle after we threw at him for about the 10th time, goes out of the game…and then Riley immediately calls a TO.

Way to give him some rest, Riley, I’m sure he appreciates it.

      • The only time I really see the oline blocking well is in goal line situations. Woods and Ward have been great about punching it in this year.

The runs where Woods hesitated tonight, I didn’t see any hole he could have ran through.

  7. Beautiful throw to Caleb Smith, who had a nice move for a 10-ish yard TD. After Mannion barely overthrew Clute who was wide open.

  8. I will never understand this defensive scheme.

They have 3 WRs bunched. We have 2 CBs tight on them, then a safety about 12 yards deep. They obviously throw a screen, and 2v3 then get 10 yards. Every fucking time.

    • I don’t mind showing a little fire out there. This group of oliners would actually do something about JQuizz getting body slammed out of bounds.

  9. Woods just needs to be converted to receiver and let Brown and Ward run. He’s got good hands and is shifty as hell once he’s moving.

    • Seriously. I feel like a broke record but common. Has he ever heard the term “fall forward”? At least try to lower your shoulder and get across the chains.

      • A combination of bad running by the RBs and bad blocking. Have you seen a single hole to run through in like 4 games? I haven’t.

    • Playcalling has been very creative on 4th downs this year. Can’t recall seeing a team run a reverse on 4th and short. Riley having some fun with the Cal defense.

      • Part having fun with the Cal defense and a bigger part trying to make stuff happen while having no run game.
There was a time not so long ago when Tyler Anderson was making first downs nearly every time he carried (although he wasn’t called on to carry often). Is Ty in the same doghouse as Jovan?

      • Some plays no, some plays yes. In football the holes don’t stay open very long on most plays and it’s the RBs job to get in there before it closes. I feel like Woods waits too long to hit the hole and as a result the hole has already been filled by a LB or safety. This should be one of the most talented lines we’ve had in years and yet you’d swear it’s filled with walk-ons (which Quizz actually did have and yet still amassed 1,000+ yards every year).

  10. 4th and 4 for Cal, they throw a short pass, perfectly defended and batted down by Nelson. And we ran press coverage! What just happened?

  11. And as I say that, WR screen over the middle for a 34 yard TD.

Cal fans freaking out over the roughing the passer call. Helmet straight to the chest, lowered like a battering ram. Easy call.

  12. Funny watching this game in that it seems like I know half the names on their roster because we lost recruiting battles with Cal.

  13. Zimmerman nice shot and tackle there.

And that’s how Banker keeps his job, ESPN occasionally slurping him without knowing anything about him.

  14. Smith, you stupid drive killing bastard. Would it be that hard just to catch it and hit the turf?
Still, he did get us a td. I think if they could get this kid to focus he would be dangerous

  15. Those pink quack helmets are really fugly. If they want to raise awareness they should have their cheerleaders wear wet t-shirts.

  16. Mannion started 10-17, now 25-33, aka 15-16 since then. Sickness.

Maybe getting Storm some yards in the passing game will re-build his confidence. I doubt it, but I hope so.

  17. The rest of the game should be live practice of the run game, however I fear MR will keep Mannion chucking the ball and taking potentially season wrecking hits.

  18. I know Riley doesn’t want to pull Mannion/Cooks after poor plays and abuse by the Bears, BUT these two are the heart of this team. This is the last chance to get playing time for Vanderveen and has the advantage of letting Vaz get a couple series before putting Vanderveen in…….I know Riley wants to be “PC” on letting Vaz go in first.

  19. Seriously….
We don’t scrimmage in the preseason to avoid injury, but it’s a good idea to continue padding stats with star players in blowout games for the fun of it??

  20. Cal coaches are going to call MR out for this BS tomorrow.
But with the remainder of our games, we’ll live by the pass and die by the pass.

  21. Clute decides to tip a pass up when he’s on the ground and it’s almost intercepted as a result. Dumb play, dumb play call. Riley trying to sneak a 5th TD pass in when the game is super-over.

  22. If I was a Cal fan, I would hate OSU…after the decade of domination, including some really big upset wins, we go for it on fourth and goal up 32. I think for some reason Riley really enjoys beating Cal.

    • jesus fucking tits helen! We haven’t lost at memorial stadium in berkeley since 1997 and someone gives that a -1????? I hope whoever did that gets ass cancer!

      Sarcasm

  23. I love the fact Riley is pounding them! Why it’s okay for Uo or anybody else to run 90 + plus plays but we have to bench our starters, and work on the punt game?

  24. Beavs D looked better again tonight. Maybe they’ll scrimmage next year.

Also, Riley is an idiot playing Mannion/Cooks up 32 in the 4th. No excuse.

  25. Kind of bull shit call by the refs. They messed up the whistle by saying it was a forward pass, but once they blow the whistle the play is dead and the Beaver players didn’t try to pounce on the loose ball. Doesn’t matter, I know, but still annoying.

  26. Honestly – how do you think Powe feels about choosing Cal, on their way to 1-6, while we are 6-1, and we have a heisman candidate QB? That’s got to suck.

  27. Cal must of had better recruit hostesses than we provided. I thought it was pretty clear that cal was not going to be any good for a while.

    • At this point, I don’t think any of them will. That’s usually a good thing because it means you have depth. With the class we have so far, it also means there aren’t any real standouts coming in. Maybe a d-lineman or two will play with as much as we rotate guys there.

Mitchell is mobile enough (Rivals has him running a 4.6 40), but you don’t see him running much on film. McMaryion looks like more of a scrambler to me.

    • Oregon-UCLA and South Carolina-Missouri are the only other match ups next week that stood out to me. I do think the Beavers jump into the top 25 after this game because it makes our match up with Stanford more marketable.

    • That would be the kind of exposure to put Mannion right into the thick of the Heisman race with a win. Going to be an awesome sold out electric atmosphere!

  28. Anyone watch “The Drive” on PAC12 networks? It’s the show that’s like hard knocks on HBO. They are following Cal and ASU this year. It’ll be fun to watch what their attitude is in prepping for the game.

    • I think Oregon State should do the Drive next year for Mannion and Cooks’ senior season. Can BDC take advantage of an opportunity? He never marches on Rome.

    • That is a bizarre rant. Sounds like Alliotti is the one chasing stats. What are the cougs supposed to do, run the ball? It’s called an air raid offense for a reason..

      • So Halliday throws an NCAA record number of pass attepts, which was twice the number Sean threw, but only ended up with 60+ more yards than Sean. If that final Cooks pass were caught, it would have been nearly even total passing yards.

    • What makes him a total pussy is how he asks the media to make sure Leach knows how he feels.
Here’s an idea, tell him yourself to his face, dick.
How does a guy at that level and with as much experience and time with the same university pop off with something THAT stupid?
If a Beaver coach said that I would be so embarrassed.

  29. I think Osu fans are really wishful thinking with the whole Mannion_Heisman talk. At best he gets mentioned as a 6th best dark horse by some announcer trying to be different. It’s all about wins and highlight reel plays. If we win out he might get invited, otherwise not a sniff.
The only good this premature talk does is maybe get some espn guy mentioning him frequently which of course is good exposure for the program. I do like that Herbstreit has mentioned him.

    • Seems that atleast 60% of the time it goes to the QB with the best numbers and you can’t have more than 3 losses and need a moment. Sean has a sizeable lead with the numbers. I don’t expect his production to fall much against the good teams we finish with. OSU will still throw a lot and the games will dictate that and Sean will be in for all 4 quartes most likely. If we cab beat Stanford at home we will pick up a lot of buzz and then USC and UW are also quite winnable. OSU also will give ASU a much better game than the Fuskies did.

  30. OSU stays unranked. Which I’m fine wih. Just funny that if OSU had managed 1 more score against EWU, they’d be in the top 10 now. Stanford has lost to a team OSU beat on the road (and Utah has 3 losses now) yet remains in the top 10. Sets up an intriguing game this week. Stanford appears to have lost one of their better receivers for the week due to knee injury in 4th quarter vs UCLA.

  31. Oregon State #28 in the AP with 79 points. Kirk Bohls had us #19 and Chris Fowler #21. Jon Wilner is a fool and has Washinton still ranked #24 at 1-3 in conference compared to our 4-0 and left us off his ballot. UW only got 4 points and Wilner was half of them. Arizona St. is #26 in the AP.

    • As for rankings, I really think it’s as it should be. Beat Stanford get a ranking. Beat Stanford prove you’re for real. Always better to prove it on the field or as an alternative if you want a cheap Top 25 ranking then don’t lose to a FCS team to start the season.

      • You’re holding Oregon St to an unfair standard. The rankings are not where they should be. UW hasn’t done anything to justify their ranking. The beavs have a more impressive resume and a better record. They should be adjusted on a weekly basis to reflect that.

        • wait just a damn minute. Unfair standard? Beavs lost to Eastern Washington. While still not sold on the hussies they have lost to the ducks, stanford and ASU. Just like us they have beaten no one of substance unless you consider Boise St to be a good team this year. I don’t see the Beavs having a more impressive resume than UW right now. If we had played their schedule would we be 6-1?

  32. Silver lining in the polls is OSU is #27 in the Coaches and opposite of the AP has a sizeable point margin above ASU at 91-51. The coaches counts in the BCS whereas the AP has no bearing. The computers already had OSU 27 or 28 last week according to projections so there is still potential to crack the BCS Top 25 tonight. Should be very close right around #25.

  33. Imo the Beav’s OL will not be able to protect Mannion against the furd’s D. Worst case, he gets a season ending injury. Best case, he just gets the snot beat out of him.

    Bwdik

    • I had great seats at last nights game, and I saw Mannion settling in nicely in some beautiful pockets. Also I was impressed by a much quicker release when the pocket did collapse. Bwidk

      • What I don’t know is are you comparing oranges with oranges or…… In other words how does the Stanford D compare with the Cal D?

    • Good to see you are getting back into the swing of things. I want to know if they will be able to bring pressure on Mannion. Watched quite a bit of the UCLA/Stanford game, Hudley had a lot of time to throw it seems though out the game.

    • Ask If knows of any start ups we can get into on the ground floor, get rich and donate money to the Beavs, and win a CW before we all are too senile to know or care about it.

    • Nice! I really enjoyed that a couple years ago when you tried to get a little back and forth with other conference blogs. Very nice. Also, I enjoyed that blog someone posted about cal scouting Beavs, lets remember that for next year.

    • Why didn’t Shaw run the ball on 3rd or 4th and goal from the 2 vs Utah to lose the game. How do they feel about it. (ruined any BCS NC Title hopes). Status on Montgomery and what do they do w/out?

    • Ask them if they THINK they have ever seen a duo like Mannion/Cooks before and sit back and laugh at the response. Also, ask them to bring some of those 4/5 star recruits to the game so they can see Corvallis and the beavs, and then make their decision! I bet they would be so scared and lose many of their recruits to the beavers. And maybe ask them too why they think we are better than Oregon and have a better chance to beat them this year. And why aren’t they ranked lower than us since we beat Utah? Did anyone miss that? I thought it was a misprint!

  34. Man the EWU loss has been a killer. Still not ranked. Major F up by the coaching staff. Lost a lot of free pub with ESPN. Beavs would be close to the top ten, whether they deserved it or not.

    • Doubt it. USC is orange and I think they also partially did that because they feel better about beating USC. Missed opportunity considering Stanford kept us from the Rose Bowl last year in a tight game and we have plenty of chance to beat Stanford at home. Would be an ideal game for the orange and black look that we also were supposed to have as the all orange will be seen at USC. But per the genius of BDC it will almost certainly be the same all black look we saw for EWU even if it is a major season making game.

    • We better do the damn orange out! It’s time, here is our chance to show we are among the nation’s most elite teams! Get that orange on tv leading up to Halloween? You better believe we will be signing top talent left and right. Mannion needs to host every single recruit and show them what we have to offer!

    • Nice. Brings a little more attention to our game this weekend with it being a top 25 match up. I’m definitely not sad to see Oregon get screwed either.

      • Yep, #25 in the “only poll that matters” finally seems people are forgetting about eastern Washington, and its about time! Haha Ducks, maybe don’t almost lose to WSU and you will actually not get screwed for once. Cry me a river, looks like the pink helmets FAILED! The beavs looked so much better vs WSU, I bet we pass the ducks in the next few weeks anyway because of how much better we are playing the same teams.

        • a 24 point win is “almost losing”? You’re a genius. I bet you’re the smartest fry boy in the building at your workplace

        • I can’t believe you kept typing after you so clearly lost any plausibility or sense of real humor halfway through the first sentence. That’s bullshit, and you can write that down. I don’t care. It’s just a low class thing to do.

This is awesome. I can use Aliotti’s words for just about anything. This has to be one of the best gifts any Duck could have ever provided. It’s not like we needed any evidence they were highly stupid. But that rant was just so antithetical to sport that it makes stupid beam with pride at its relative genius. I just can’t believe someone who calls himself a coach would say something so very low brow.

Thank you Nick “Hyper-whiny” Aliotti. Thank you very much you silly loser.

          • Allioti sounds way too entitled, like a class one creep. How dare the opposition play hard to the end when the Ducks have ground them into the turf? His day will come, hopefully sooner than later.

          • concur Jack. This example of Duck Stupidity will have longevity. Just goes to show how jaded they have become in EUG. As Neuheisel just said on Jack Arute’s show, when you so often you start to lose focus on what matters, winning, and shift your gaze to crazy stuff like rankings and stats. That’s where Alioti’s mindset is. A good sign. This is the high water mark for Duck football. it’s all downhill from here.

  35. Derek Anderson comments on Mannion/Cooks:

Anderson, who also plays for the Panthers now, is a little miffed at all the attention Mannion and Cooks aren’t getting, and says it’s especially ridiculous when you consider the numbers. Mannion leads the country in total passing yards (2,992) and touchdowns (29). Cooks has 1,176 receiving yards, which also leads the country.

“If you go back and look at when Joey Harrington finished fourth in the Heisman voting, Sean has close to those stats — or better than them — through (seven) games,” Anderson said.

He’s right. Harrington finished the 2001 season at Oregon passing for 2,415 yards and 23 touchdowns.
    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2013/10/oregon_state_insider_mannion-t.html

Pretty crazy stats when you see it put into perspective

    Also:

    David Pollack ?@davidpollack47 1h

If u aren’t paying attention out west, my Beavers added a little sugar 2 that Beaver juice & are rolling now.

    • It is interesting to look back and see how much the game has changed. Jonathan Smith had one season where he completed over 50% of his passes. I don’t think a quarterback would last very long now with those numbers.

    • I HATE Schnell’s intro into that column. As if Eugene is surrounded by the similar Wilamette basin ag and economic conditions 45 miles to the south. Eugene as a city offers nothing better than Corvallis really, and it offers lower quality of life. UO football’s recruiting strength is the phil knight nike machine.

  36. Lover this, from ESPN:

“…Ducks defensive coordinator Mike Aliotti in a news release.”

    and,

“Mike Leach, saying he was concerned about only his team, declined to escalate blunt criticism by Mike Aliotti into a war of words…”

Gave me a chuckle this morning. Nothing like a clown whining to the media for a little attention only to have his name incorrectly cited when it prints.
    and,

    • Didn’t hear Wynn’s name called as much as I expected against Cal, if he can show up big vs Stanford it’ll be a big help. Remember when he and Crichton were frequently forcing and recovering fumbles?

      • Wynn did have a fumble recovery this week, and I thought he played a decent overall game. Was consistently in the backfield harrassing Goff.

      • I was at the game and was satisfied with Wynns play. It seemed to me that Cal was scheming for Wynn and not Chriton, and seemed obvious to me that Cal didn’t realize everyone else we have played had been scheming for For Chriton, allowing Wynn to make more noise. That was a mistake and Chriton had the big game.

  37. Couple of updates on recruits from the 2013 class who didn’t qualify(includes update on Mattison):

Jalen Grimble, the 6-2, 295-pound transfer from Miami who is sitting out this season but practicing with the Beavers, fits into their plans at defensive tackle next year. “He’s really good,” Riley said. “He’s a good kid and works real hard on our scout team. If everything keeps going like it is, he’ll be right in the mix (for rotation minutes) next season.” Riley said Grimble will count as a member of the 2013 recruiting class. …

Receiver Javon Williams, dismissed from Arizona Western’s team a week ago, would have to go to junior college for another year before being eligible to play at a four-year school. Williams has announced a commitment to OSU …

    — OSU coaches were told that Lawrence Mattison, the 6-1, 235-pound running back who has left Butler College in El Dorado, Kan., is transferring to Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas. Mattison, who failed to qualify academically to attend OSU out of high school in Spring Branch, Texas, said via Twitter he intends to enroll at OSU for winter term. That wouldn’t be possible unless he had gained academic eligibility at a junior college. ..

OSU coaches are hopeful Kyle Peko — the 6-2, 295-pound defensive tackle who failed to qualify academically out of Cerritos (Calif.) College — will finish his classes at Cerritos this fall and gain eligibility so he can enroll at OSU winter term.

    • Great news about Grimble. Will have a year in the system and should be able plug a huge hole in the roster at DT. Need a couple of HS kids to get in the system at that position.
Does anybody have any confidence the other three ever play a down for the Beavs?
