Beavs’ Recruiting Trending Down

78

Currently OSU has 9 two star commits.

The year prior, they had 3. The year before that, 5.

You have to go back to 2011 to find a similar number. They had eight, and included low performers such as Peter Ashton, Elisina Aluesi, Blake Harrah, Rudolph Fifita, Na’Alli Robbins, Larry Scott, and the one serviceable player, Kellen Clute. Seems stars DO matter, to an extent, except for the clear misses (e.g. James Rodgers).

On the flipside, they have no 4+ star recruits committed at this point, something that has not happened since 2003.

Of the 17 current commits, only 3 hold a national ranking.

All numbers via rivals.com.

I’ve been busy with life and have yet to watch the film on these guys, but purely based on the numbers, I’d say this is a step backward. I plan to watch film over the next few weeks.

  1. I blame BDC and too much complacency overall. Even though the team is usually pretty good the acceptance of a “Shoot we are Oregon State” is what has kept us from another BCS bowl. Per Ken Goe Portland used to be an Oregon State town but BDC has lost our past advantage there and is doing nothing to get it back. OSU needs a new AD come 2016 or we will be as stale as anyone. Pat Casey is a good option and won’t accept 2nd best.

    • I couldn’t agree more. Everything trending down at Oregon State all comes back to BDC. Imagine how good are basketball team could be if BDC insisted on a young Xs and Os Assistant Coach for Craig Robinson. BDC is not going beyond the minimum in his position. He is doing nothing wrong and by that he is passively letting it all go to hell. He needs to go away, step down, focus on his health. BDC is the root of all problems. We have talented people in many areas, a good AD would insist on supplementing their weaker areas.

      • Well if BDC is the problem with OSU then let’s shit can him! I’m tired of this message being sent. PS Angry, maybe take this post off your site. We don’t want recruits reading that we are trending down. Maybe replace it with BDC on the hot seat, or something saying the Beavs will be making changes to bring in better recruits.

        • That’s an ass-tastic thing to say. Don’t want recruits to be fully informed of their decisions eh? Decisions that will significantly impact their entire life. I don’t want a kid coming here that hasn’t had the chance to know the facts, good, great, bad and ugly. Or did you forget that more than 98% of our teams will never go pro and that their degree and school choice are more important than these trends. Or yeah, let’s censor and ban free speech. I don’t like the job BDC is doing. Deal with it.

You know I’m a high school track coach in my spare time, and a dam good one. I have a freshman and a prestigious acedemic school in the NorthEast. This kid is one of nations best olympic hopefuls in his event, and chose the school despite a bad AD and Head coach. He chose the school, well informed of his academic future combined with quality event(position) coaches. So there’s that.

          • He’s a Duck. He thinks players should choose a school because they like shiny things. Unfortunately, that also covers half the student body at Duck High.

  2. Angry, agree with recruiting trend. With the success last year the recruiting should be getting easier, not harder. The gap with the ducks is getting wider and wider in regards to talent. Seems like we are just getting bodies to fill our quota this year and not swinging for the fences. At the very least we should be getting some high rated QB’s and receivers given our O system.

    • I totally agree! We won our share of games last season, its time we start winning the lions share of 4 and 5 star recruits! Start on the west coast and push to the southeast! Get the 5 star kids who want to live and play the Corvallis way! REBEAV logo and unis should be doing more!

    • That’s the think, we always hear recruiting will pick up once we start winning big. Off the best bowl game in years, recruiting is the worst since rivals kept track (i went back a decade to 2003) No 4-stars and nine 2-stars. That is ridiculous.

  3. I feel like you guys overreact on an annual basis. BDC recently discussed the additional television revenue and stated that a chunk of it is going towards enhancing our recruiting efforts.

  4. Well all that damn revenue better do something! It really chaps my flat tail to see a downward trend. How? Are we not casting our net wide enough or do we need new coaches who can recruit better players. If we keep competing with FCS programs for players, then we will continue to struggle against FCS teams. We need to go toe to toe with the other schools for 5 star kids and start winning those battles. Hello? Ever heard of the Rodgers brothers? Ever seen us play USC those couple times? Haven’t you noticed that we now have NIKE in our corner like the yucks? Have you heard the chainsaw YouTube video with cheerleaders? Are you waiting for us to wear the new Orange uniforms? Ugggh, I GIVE UP!!!!! At least coach Rob gets bball players coveted by every major program in the country and actually can showcase the fact that he is the nation’s first brother-in-law! Another solid reason to come to OSU!

  5. Tennessee should have beat Georgia and is holding their own vs south Carolina. Does everyone not remember the yucks beating Tenn by 700? Why is it ok to struggle vs Tenn so long as your in the same conference. If this is the case then the entire Pac12 should be ranked except Cal.

  6. Super busy with Medicare open enrolment have not had time for postings.

I am really disappointed with the recruiting, I so badly want to follow the drama of the recruiting process, but it’s continually a kick in the gut. Nobody wants to play here. We brought in young coaches Brennan and Brasfield to help and it hasn’t. Seumalo has quitely become are most important recruiter. Last season was a good overall class, but it’s lack of positional help from DT to LB has left us mysteriously thin up the middle.

I know most on here don’t want to expand Reset, but I see it as a necessary tool in the recruiting process. If not that, we need something to show some excitement and progression of the program. Maybe the VF update will provide that??? New lockers couldn’t hurt.

For those who think stars don’t matter, our two best players Mannion and Cooks were 4stars. We need at least a few of these guys to stay competitive or take it up a notch.

I think it starts in our own backyard. This staff has done a poor job of recruiting the top talent in the state for the past 8 seasons. Can’t get in the 4star or 5star in-state recruits how are going to get them from Tex and Cali? I include WA in the backyard.

    • I was just going to say the same. I think we stack up nicely against them. Their defense is good because their front seven can stuff the run and pressure the QB. We don’t run the ball anyways and our offensive line has been great with pass blocking. If our offensive line holds firm I don’t see that Stanford secondary holding the Mannion-to-Cooks combination in check. It’s also convenient they run the type of offense that Banker can actually coach against.

      • It’s also convenient they run the only type of offense that Banker can actually coach against.

        fixed that for you

  7. Stars are nice and all, but I think you have to look beyond the ratings and look at the film and the head to head battles that we’re in to assess recruiting. The majority of our all-conference players throughout the years haven’t been 4 or 5 stars, so you can certainly field quality players without a blue chip background.

You also have to look at how the ratings are assigned and accept that the recruiting services are far from the ultimate authorities on a lot of these kids. Heck, Rivals barely had enough info on Hawai’i’s prospects this year to put together a state top 5 ranking.

    • I agree with most of what you say, however I don’t think you can successfully build a program with the intention that everybody you recruit is reliant on your and their ability to develop into the top level talent required to compete for conference championships. You need at least a few 4star and 5star recruits who can make an impact on the field.

Speed is one thing you can’t teach, but just because the guy is fast doesn’t mean they can play effectively with speed. They need to process the reads on the field that will allow them to use their speed to the teams advantage. You can have all the speed in the world but if you take poor angles or you can’t tackle in the open field or if you can’t catch the ball or run the right route see the right lanes to run through it doesn’t do you any good.

This staff is continually developing players to get them to be an effective player in the game. What has happened is that doesn’t create the depth you need to run through an entire 12 game schedule. For example, they brought in Skotte as a 2star MLB, but he has not developed fast enough to be productive, and you have no experience behind him. Add in the injuries to some of your veteran linebackers and you are forced to play young inexperienced and not developed players and asking them to perform at the level necessary for the team to have success. That development now has to take place during games.

I don’t want to discredit the staff for their ability to find and develop these less recruited athletes, but they still need to mix in enough 4star/5stars to solidify the programs continually development.

      • Agreed. 4 and 5 stars certainly make your job easier, but they aren’t the be all end all.

Just for kicks, here are our 4 star guys from the last 11 years. We’re averaging about two per class in that time frame, and about half end up fulfilling their potential:
        D Alexander WR 2002
        B Lockheart T 2002 Kicked off team?
Joe Newton TE 2002 HM All-Pac
Keith Ellison LB 2004 1st Team All-Pac; NFL
        Bryan Payton CB 2004
        Ruben Jackson WR 2005
        E. McCullough CB 2005
Matt Moore QB 2005 HM All-Pac; NFL
Joey La Rocque LB 2006 2nd Team All-Pac
Gabe Miller TE 2006 HM All-Pac
        Reggie Dunn WR 2007 DNQ
        David Ross CB 2007 DNQ?
        Simi Kuli DE 2008 DNQ
Michael Philipp T 2009 Solid Starter
        Shaydon Akuna LB 2010 DNQ
Sean Mannion QB 2010 Heisman Candidate
        Thomas Molesi DT 2010 DNQ?
Brandin Cooks WR 2011 All-American Candidate
Isaac Seumalo CB 2012 HM All-Pac
        Caleb Smith TE 2012
        Dashon Hunt CB 2013

      • Could not agree more. With the success the Beavs have had in the last 10 years I find it unacceptable we have not been able to find and get more 3 and 4 star guys. I don’t expect to get them all but seriously we seem lose more than we get. Or the ones we do get don’t qualify

  8. Manziel if he pulls off a sloppy won over Auburn at home gets to stay at the top with Mariota and ahead of Mannion. What a joke. Mannion will dwarf his numbers.

  9. By the way, I like rivals scale better. I notice players below 5.4 rarely pan out. 5.5 seems to be the cut off. Yes, there are exceptions, but stop bringing up the very few Hass, Rodgers. We know those two. There aren’t many more sub 5.4 who became stars.

    • There are dozens more players who where walk-ons or very low rated players who not only started at OSU, but moved on to the NFL. Most of which you ragged on for not being good players. Yet, you sit and hide behind a keyboard and they are making millions in the NFL. If you think Hass and Rodgers are the only two, it shows your very, very, very limited knowledge of OS football and how Riley recruits.

FYI…most players get re-evaluated at some point in their senior season. Before ragging on their ‘star’ ranking. Lets see how they rank in Feb and then wait 2-3 years to see how they do on the field.

    • Good. Manziel should barely be in the race anymore. They deserve to fall to 15 or 16. Auburn was largely moved up for their benefit. Practically this was a loss to an unranked team.

      • I remember reading something two seasons ago I think about coaches in the SEC (although I’m sure other conferences doing it as well) ranking their opponents higher to pad their SoS score. The article I read specificly stated that Vandy was consistently voted top 15 by other SEC coaches when they were 1-3 win teams…

That’s why polls are fucking stupid. That being said, I still like to see little numbers next to our name. I just wish they weren’t so wrong/biased.

      • I wish I could find they source, because I know statements with no source are worthless. This was several years ago, I think. Anyone else happen to remember the article?

    • I believe someone who bears a striking resemblance to mysefl said they weren’t sold on the hussies when they were 4-0. ASSU you opening up a 55 gallon drum of ass rape on the hussies. Yes, that same ASSU team that got punked by a mediocre Notre Lame team. Enjoy your third loss in a row hussies. They are at best an 8 win team. Price is overrated. Stop Sankey and you stop the hussies.

  10. Re: recruiting – anybody know what’s going on with Lawrence Mattison? He isn’t listed in the rushing stats for the last couple of Butler CC/JuCo games.

    • I think he got injured around the 2nd week, then dropped out of school. Pretty sure he’s not on a team currently. Not sure what the issue was, but if he couldnt last 3+ weeks in Juco, I’m afraid he’ll never be able to focus on getting things together for the Beavs. Really unfortunate

  11. Thx. Indeed unfortunate. An example of why I don’t like to pay much attention to the recruiting hype. I try to ignore it until the t’s are crossed and the i’s, well you know. As for Mattison, I only hope he doesn’t go off the deep end somewhere.

  12. Still on the recruiting thread – in case anyone is still looking at it – re: baseball and Makauley Fox, another hyped-up press release. As I re-read it, I can’t tell if he was supposed to enroll in OSU this fall or next. Anyone which or if he still intends to play baseball for the Beavs?

    • I recall he was going to enroll in January with a 61% athletic ship and the rest paid by an academic ship. I can’t remember, but I think it was because Kiwi schools are offset from our schedule so that their academic year ends toward the New Year break. Or it could be that Kiwis can’t graduate until they’re 18? His birthday is on the 29th. That’s when he’s 18.

He’ll be enrolled under the name Rolfe.
