Some names to watch over the next few months.

  • Brian Cole
  • Jordan Agasiva
  • Juliano Falaniko
  • Craig Evans
  • Jamire Calvin
  • Rahyme Johnson
  • Brandon Pili

Per my hunches, sources, etc, I think Evans is the only good bet of the bunch, but the Beavs are 33-50% with most of the other guys. Battling maybe a school or two. In-home visit tonight with Calvin per Twitter. Personally I want as many high quality (legit 3 stars and above) DT and OLs as we can get.

Saw mention of Isaiah Miller in the prior thread. I think we lost him to an SEC school since they’re all coming late to the party and much closer to home. The perils of recruiting Florida…

Anyway, list names you’re hearing, what positions you think the Beavs should be recruiting for their final 6 slots, etc.

Mostly unimpressed. A few years at Stanford should have been good for him, but I don’t see him taking UO where Helfrich could not. And Helfrich got them pretty high (Kelly recruits, Mariota, etc.). I could see UO having some good years again in the near future, but not great.

They did put up the points this year:

      http://www.fbschedules.com/ncaa-16/2016-usf-bulls-football-schedule.php

An interesting sub-plot is the Beavs and Ducks should be both recruiting Florida now.

AND the oregonian doesn’t have Taggart hiring story yet. Too funny…

Another, consideration. I’m guessing USF doesn’t have the highest of academic requirements. I wonder what kind of student-athletes Taggart will recruit to Oregon?

Oregon’s football is such a premier program they were turned down by Matt Rhule and Bryan Harsin. You got snubbed by two coaches who aren’t even at a P5 school. You hired a coach with a career record of 40-45. So like their 20th choice? I believe I stated the other day this was looking similar to their search for a hoops coach and went after Izzo and the coach at Kansas.

Nothing wrong with shooting for the moon. It’s the arrogance of saying you’re going to do something that isn’t possible and having your followers believe it is possible that was really really bad about that situatiion.

Just quietly use diplomacy to gauge interest and move down the list. Then it doesn’t manifest in some huge joke.

Well Kauha’aha’a had an in-home with Pili last week according to Scout. I’m hoping they can pull him but betting he’s going to be a Husky. Reasonably close to his Ak home (I think Seattle has an airport?).

Agree on the OLs DTs as priorities. I’d pick CBs next, and the Beavs are doing well there.

I wouldn’t be discounting Taggart at all. His track record is fairly impressive. He may have to clean house to get his kind of guys but the guy can coach.

Sure his name is underwhelming for a program that considers itself elite but it’s a good hire.

‘Premier, Lamborghini’ program to you sir.

Which really brings up the question, what is a premiere program?

I’d say Alabama, tOSU, Harbaugh’s Khakis, Texas, U$C… although any P5 school would be big time, those seem the upper echelon at least in terms of history and perception.

The current USF RB coach (Donte Pimpleton) was Taggart’s college teammate and they’ve been coaching together for I think 5 years, I’m guessing he’s more likely than Lockette, who was only at USF for two years.

I think they were lucky to land on Taggart. They’re going to go through DCs like no tomorrow. But their O will click.

The interesting part to me will be how many of the old staff will be brought back. Are they just gone now? Was Nikegon going to go in a different direction completely? Will they still since Taggart is their sixth or so pick?

How many coaches had to say publicly they weren’t going to Nikegon?
McElwain, Rhule, Harsin, fourth? Fleck and Musgrave were sought through back channels, and they quietly declined.

Saw a report Fedora wanted to go home to Texas. He may have lucked out by missing the Baylor job. aTm might be available next year. I’m wondering how many coaches out there are waiting for Notre Dame to come open.

Per Canzano, Brent Brennan to be named SJSU head coach.

Not surprised. He used to coach there and the only Riley hold over. He’s a good recruiter but a so-so coach. I think Wheaton, Cooks, Rodgers, made him look good. I’m confident GA can fill that spot with someone good. Unless Baldwin slides over to coach WR.

Also, I’m hoping the RB coach Lockette doesn’t jump to Oregon since he used to be Taggart’s RB coach at USF. He’s a stud recruiter in FL. Got us all those FL guys like pierce, and some other DBs. Would hate to lose him to Oregon.

thought i posted something but it must have landed in purgatory. was going to say, the Brennan news could be devastating to this class. He recruited the Chandler and the Cathedral guys. Hopefully they were sold on the program as much as they were on their recruiting coach. Taylor seems like a pretty steady commit. Hard to know with Green. He’s been blowing up lately, so we don’t really know who all is talking to him outside of OSU. And the Cathedral guys, if Flemings doesn’t stick around, that would pretty much kill all hopes with the other guys (Manning Jr, Calvin, Echols)

In this hypothetical our commits and recruits are good enough to be poached by many other wanting schools. This isn’t the OSU of old where an airport mattered.

You always win some and lose some. But they’re being sold on being a part of a team on the rise, and their talent together will facilitate that dream that much faster. Most will buy into the idea they can be legend together. A couple will go be a cog in some other machine. It is what it is.

Brennan being promoted like this is a good look for our program.

Jack Harbaugh and Tony Dungy both love Taggart. Best recruiter? Dungy clearly just wants to propel Taggart into the NFL. Not sure what Harbaugh’s angle is other than he’s from the coaching tree.

Anyway, I read that Taggart’s team averaged 40 points per game. If he can recruit and coach as I’m also reading, maybe this is a home run after all. Just looking at his record and pedigree I wasn’t impressed.

ok, going to try to chip away at some positions here, while I’m at work. Just listing off the names of some guys I’m keeping an eye on, with a few notes.

    O-Line:
Jordan Agasiva- JC O-lineman who visited us recently. One of the top JC OL recruits in the country. We’re in his top 2-3, along with TCU and Utah. We need this guy to patch up holes in the OL from some of our departing seniors.

George Moore- JC O-lineman. WSU commit. I think(but haven’t confirmed) that he was a secret visitor here a couple of weeks back(Arizona game). It’s not being reported anywhere that I’ve seen, but just a hunch on my part based on some things I’ve seen.

Onesimus Lutu-Clarke- 2017 OL from Hawaii. Visited us for the Arizona game. Think we have a good chance with landing him. BYU, Delaware St and Hawaii are other offers.

Mo Unutoa- 2017 OL from Hawaii. Visited for the WSU game. Not sure which way he’s leaning. Probably depends also on how many OL we plan to bring in this year.

Cody Shear- 2017 Arizona commit. We haven’t given up on him, and he is getting recruited by GA personally. For that reason alone, I think we still have a shot with him, despite being an Arizona commit.

Abraham Lucas- 2017 WSU commit. Probably a longshot, but worth keeping an eye on. Haven’t heard anything about a visit from him, so that’s not a great sign.

    D-Line:
(again, these aren’t current commits. Just guys I’m watching going forward)

Craig Evans- JC DT. Former Michigan State guy who was 4* out of highschool. Failed a couple of drug tests while at Michigan State, hence the transfer to a JC program. It was transfer, or sit for 6 games. I think we land him, mostly due to GA having a long relationship with him.

Brandon Pili- 2017 DT. Moved to the Beaverton, OR area for his senior year of highschool, originally from Alaska. Has picked up offers from many other teams, although OSU was first P5 offer. It’s thought that he really wants a UW offer, but that hasn’t materialized as of yet, and I think the only way that happens is if someone else defects from UW’s current class. Hard to say what our chances are, but the fact that his family hosted Coach Chad in Alaska last week has to help.
Of note, in head to head this year, he was dominated by local OT Jaxson Kirkland, who is a 2017 UCLA pledge.

Hunter Echols- 2017 DE-USC commit. Longshot, but, if we can land Calvin, it might help make OSU more attractive to poach Echols from USC. The recent Brennan news might just blow that whole plan up. Hopefully not.

Jordan Lolohea- 2017 DE from Utah’s East High School. We’re in his top 3 along with WSU and Utah, although he’s hosted UW for a home visit, and BYU is also an option. Would be great to establish a pipeline at East, similar to our Chandler connection. Lots of competition here though.

The recruiting around DE and DT is pretty quiet lately. We have 2 2017 commits, but they’re both mission guys who won’t really count, so it would seem we would need more guys here. Could be there are a couple of quieter guys being recruited that we haven’t heard about. Thinking about a guy like Gus Lavaka who was added pretty quietly in December last year.

Today is pretty busy at work, so if there’s a position group you’re interested in hearing more about, let me know and i’ll try to focus on them next.

Since the Brennan story has broke, I will say something. I have known for awhile that one of our offensive players has been very close to transferring. In fact, in the past two weeks he has become very displeased with his playing time/role and started making noise about it. He also had an incident that made him question being in Corvallis. Brennan leaving is either going to make him consider staying now, or it will really push him over the edge to transfer/quit. Things are going to be interesting.

So, if Brennan leaving may make “him” consider staying, does that imply that “he” felt disrespected/unappreciated by Brennan?
Did “he” miss a flight? And thus “question being in Corvallis”?

Good for Brennan. Really liked him so happy for him.

Regarding recruiting: At least he’s going to a mid-major and all the players we’re worried about losing are true P-5 talents that most likely won’t be leaving with.

Seems like a lot of these kids also have friends on the team that are recruiting them as much as the coaches are.

So far GA has been great at limiting flips. At this point I trust he’s the main reason why and imagine we’ll keep most.

Also seems like Brennan was the guys who got the credit, but quietly Baldwin is the one with connections to a lot of these California kids and their families.

“They need a personality around there. They need that kind of energy,” said former San Jose State coach Dave Baldwin, also an assistant at Oregon State. “He understands the importance of putting together a staff that can recruit the Bay Area.

“He will relate to alumni his age,” continued Baldwin, who coached at SJSU from 1997-2000. “That program has a lot of older boosters, but it doesn’t have middle-aged boosters. He has great verbal skills and will be able to communicate with the alumni.”

Could solve alot of our offensive issues from the past 2 years.

And Helf would still be making the same salary Oregon owes him for the next 3 years, while we just pay a typical OC salary and Oregon makes up any difference.

Helfrich wouldn’t be a bad hire. He might even take it since the move wouldn’t be a long move with young kids and he wouldn’t be out any money. Would be a short term move since he’d probably want to at least be an OC some where and return to the HC ranks. Kind of think he may take a year off before finding another job.

I think Anderson may go for a full time d line coach since they don’t have one.

The coach to pick off the former Oregon staff is David Yost.

Once Mariota was gone they were left with zippo and had to go out and get x’fer QB’s to even remotely attempt to run their offense. So if they failed to recruit or develop any QB’s worth a shit, why would we want them to come here and do the same???

They are stacked at RB, so it’ll surely continue to be a position of strength for them. That said, I absolutely don’t buy “won’t miss a beat.” He’s a special player and you can’t replace him that easily.

You mentioned how the other two compliment each other well stylistically, but they are still a committee with different strengths/roles. The beauty of a guy like McCaffrey (or Nall) is versatility – if you can do it all, then your presence on the field doesn’t telegraph the play call.

Then the 2:1 TD:INT ratio provides more opportunities for the other team, broken coverages, breakdowns, late alignments ensue, and big plays result as Banker hand jives away frenetically on the sideline….

I’m sorry but Jaylon Lane, a defensive back, wanting to possibly decommit because our wide receivers coach left? Does that make no sense to anybody else? If he leaves so be it. That’s stupid as hell imo.

All coaches have a region for recruiting. They are the primary recruiters for that area. They bring home tape and assessments, and then the staff evaluates and decides whether or not the position coach steps in to push to close. But the regional coach usually remains a main point of contact.

I don’t know that Lane’s looking around is even related to Brennam. Think it’s just coincidence that the two events happened in the same day. His Juco is in Kansas, which is not an area Brennan recruited.

Either way, it’s my least favorite part if the whole recruiting cycle. Thinking a guy is committed and just sitting around waiting for teams to poach.

Nice Canzano column about the AD search:

    http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian/john_canzano/index.ssf/2016/12/canzano_oregon_state_athletic_1.html

    Here’s what I like to hear…

    — By the way, a key component of this interview will be the candidates’ approach and vision. I can feel the internal push at Oregon State to end the “Giant-killers” talk and stop pitching the “Little Engine that Could” storyline that has dominated their narrative. It’s not that OSU doesn’t want to connect with some of its good David v. Goliath history, rather, it’s that the Beavers would like to kill the perception that they’re a Pac 12 “have-not” and replace that messaging with stronger branding. I like that. OSU is tired of being the little guy. If you’re a Beavers fan weary with the cutesy “we do more with less” pitch, you’ll like this too.

        >But we’ve also had Pat Casey on this campus for how many years? And we’ve chosen to follow his model how often?

That’s a great point however, if the leadership at the top, and I think Dr. Ray has set the tone pretty well, finally takes on that attitude, we may see real change. Even somebody as willful as Coach Casey trying to battle Decarolis and Riley with their ‘lovable loser’ routine, could find it tough to cut through that noise. Football drives the bus and I think Riley was a pure cancer of bad attitude and lowered expectations.

It’s really bizarre to see Oregon pulling some of the same bullshit, talking about how tough it it to recruit to Eugene, how the airport is too far away, etc. That’s on Helfrich and I think if Rob Mullens got anything right, it’s to end that before it becomes ingrained in their message and culture. Chip Kelly wouldn’t have even let that be a thing but Helfrich, like Rley, was such a pussy he allowed that loser mentality to flourish.

I hope the new AD, along with Andersen, can create a strong message and a strong brand that we play sports at a high level and don’t settle for excuses.

To be clear, Casey isn’t about the talk. He’s about doing what’s necessary to keep an advantage that he himself created. So the model to follow would be how he worked to upgrade the program (almost on his own) in a way that complimented his methods. That meant improving facilities and continuously evolving his recruiting methods.

It’s always been simple enough to say the words. But walking the talk takes work. I suspect that work is why previous incarnations of OSU liked to hide behind the narrative void of that talk, let alone the walk.

The points you guys are bringing up are right on target. An act like this would probably qualify as cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face.

However……. If he’s got any brains he’s already salted away his retirement money and is set…. so if San Jose State would have him and if the salary was “reasonable” and especially if he could fuck up OSU’s recruiting then this would be a FU that would be worth considering for the fucking over he got from Andersen. Hopefully it’s obvious I’m speaking as though I were in his shoes.

From my perspective I think he and the QB coach should both have already been fired from the OSU staff.

Understand your point. However, that’s making the assumption Baldwin is upset with what went down. In reality, it could’ve been his idea to take a step back and give the youngsters McGiven and Woods the title in order to ensure we retain them as coaches and not get into another Sitake situation this year. I don’t believe he had to take a pay cut, so he might be one very well paid insider receivers coach who also advises on the offense.

Baldwin is getting up there close to retirement age. He’s coached all over as an assistant and head coach at multiple programs. It’s possible he could be happy with the pace of life in Corvallis, coaching with one of his best friends, and getting to just focus on coaching up players as well as coaching up coaches.

Not saying this is the case, but I wouldn’t assume that he’s all butt hurt and wants retribution.

Thanks for the link, good to see the process advancing. I agree w/some of Canzano’s points (???) about changing the narrative and that the strength of OSU coaching in major sports – Casey, Rueck, Tinkle, Andersen – should be an attractant for a smart, experienced candidate, and that candidate needs to add to it and realize the potential of the AD.
